Knowledge of the interactions between long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) is the basis of understanding various biological activities and designing new drugs. Previous computational methods for predicting lncRNA-miRNA interactions lacked for plants, and they suffer from various limitations that affect the prediction accuracy and their applicability. Research on plant lncRNA-miRNA interactions is still in its infancy. In this paper, we propose an accurate predictor, MILNP, for predicting plant lncRNA-miRNA interactions based on improved linear neighborhood similarity measurement and linear neighborhood propagation algorithm. Specifically, we propose a novel similarity measure based on linear neighborhood similarity from multiple similarity profiles of lncRNAs and miRNAs and derive more precise neighborhood ranges so as to escape the limits of the existing methods. We then simultaneously update the lncRNA-miRNA interactions predicted from both similarity matrices based on label propagation. We comprehensively evaluate MILNP on the latest plant lncRNA-miRNA interaction benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate the superior performance of MILNP than the most up-to-date methods. What's more, MILNP can be leveraged for isolated plant lncRNAs (or miRNAs). Case studies suggest that MILNP can identify novel plant lncRNA-miRNA interactions, which are confirmed by classical tools. Qualitatively identifying the dominant catalytic site for each step of a semi-continuous reaction and semi-quantitatively correlating such different sites to the catalytic performance is of great significance toward the integration of multiple well-optimized sites on a heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, a series of structurally defined TiO x -based catalysts were synthesized to provide a feasible approach to investigate the aforementioned issues using the semi-continuous oxidation of glycerol as a model reaction. Detailed investigations have verified the simultaneous presence of two kinds of Pt active sites: 1) Negatively charged Pt bound to the oxygen vacancies of modified TiO x in the form of Pt δ- -O v -Ti 3+ sites and 2) metallic Pt (Pt 0 site) located away from the interface. Meanwhile, the proportion of surficial and interfacial sites varies over this series of catalysts. Combined in situ FTIR experiments revealed that the reaction network was well-tuned via a site cooperation mechanism: The surficial Pt 0 sites dissociatively adsorb the OH group of glycerol with a monodentate bonding geometry and the Pt δ- -O v -Ti 3+ sites dissociate the C=O bond of the aldehyde group in a bidentate form. Furthermore, CO-FTIR spectroscopy confirmed a correlation between the reaction rate/product selectivity and the fraction of surficial/interfacial sites. A rational proportion of surficial and interfacial sites is key to enabling a high yield of glyceric acid. The most active catalyst with 32% surface sites and 68% interfacial sites exhibited 90.0% glycerol conversion and 68.5% GLYA selectivity. This article proposes a support diminution design method for layered manufacturing of manifold surface based on variable orientation tracking (VOT). We aim at reducing the external support or upholders to a minimum with maximum possibility theoretically to save material and diminish material stripping effect (MSE), thereby improving the bilateral surface precision either exterior or interior. The cosmic gravity effect criterion is first used to extract surface need support from manifold surface with various materials by considering the balance force involving material characteristics and inclination angle. In the light of this criterion theory, varying the substrate normal orientation (SNO), namely workbench, for each layer in printing coordinate system, may break the balance between gravity and its equilibrium force. Therefore, the optimal SNO can be rigorously calculated using mathematical harmonic analysis among the continuous domain. To serve for the multidegree of freedom (DOF) on account of SNO, a reconfigurable VOT robot with six-axis DOF is developed for 3D printing (3DP). The matched servo controller is successfully implemented to accurate tracking of both orientation and Cartesian coordinates, using forward kinematic chains as well as reverse kinematic tracking. What is more, the end-effector (extruder) is holding perpendicular to the substrate workbench. The physical experiment that takes human external ear auricle, for example, using a layer-based process is implemented via VOT. The MSE due to supporting material can be clearly observed and diminished using an optical microscope. The stripped material from external support via diminution design can be evaluated quantitatively by electronic weighting balance. All of which indicate the findings that external support in 3DP can be virtually reckoned and diminished using VOT rather than the so-called build orientation traversal method. This paper proposes a biomechanical performance design method of joint prosthesis for medical rehabilitation via Generative Structure Optimization (GSO). Firstly, the 3D reconstruction of manifold structure involving hard bone and cartilage is sequentially and progressively implemented from heterogeneous medical images such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) via iteration. On the basis of reconstructed mesh structure, the finite element method (FEM) is hereby employed to verify the structure by evaluating the mechanical force distribution. The biomechanical performance design model for 3 D printing (3DP) is then built using multi-objective optimization (MOO) by considering adaptive layer thickness, infill patterns and infill trajectories, etc. The GSO outlets a generative data-driven system which covers various stages such as personalized CT, subsequent 3 D reconstruction, further finite element analysis (FEA) and even structural parameter optimization. The physical experiment of Additive manufacturing (AM) proves that, the relative density, surface topography and wear-resisting performance of joint prosthesis can be improved by GSO which helps to improve biomechanical performance, including kinematics and dynamics. The proposed method may arouse the huge attention in the prosthesis applications to promote patients' high-end customization well-being.

Effective traffic sign recognition algorithms can assist drivers or automatic driving systems in detecting and recognizing traffic signs in real-time. This paper proposes a multiscale recognition method for traffic signs based on the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Category Quality Focal Loss (CQFL) to enhance recognition speed and recognition accuracy. Specifically, GMM is utilized to cluster the prior anchors, which are in favor of reducing the clustering error. Meanwhile, considering the most common issue in supervised learning (i.e., the imbalance of data set categories), the category proportion factor is introduced into Quality Focal Loss, which is referred to as CQFL. Furthermore, a five-scale recognition network with a prior anchor allocation strategy is designed for small target objects i.e., traffic sign recognition. Combining five existing tricks, the best speed and accuracy tradeoff on our data set (40.1% mAP and 15 FPS on a single 1080Ti GPU), can be achieved. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the existing mainstream algorithms, in terms of recognition accuracy and recognition speed.

With the development of social economy in the 21st century, and the rising of medical level, the aging of population have become a global trend. However lots of elderly people are in "empty nest" state. In order to solve the problem of high risk of daily life in this group, this paper proposed a method to integrate the information of video images, sound, infrared, pulse, and other information into the elderly care system. The whole system consists of four major components, that is, the main control board, the information acquisition boards, the server, and the client. The control board receives, processes and analyzes the data collected by the information acquisition boards, and uploads necessary information to the server, which are to be saved to the database. When something unexpected occurs to the elderly, the system will notify the relatives through the GPRS (general packet radio service) module. The system also provides an interface for the relatives to inquire the living status of the elderly through an app. The system can monitor the living status for the elderly with the characteristics of quick response, high accuracy, and low cost and can be widely applied to the elderly care at home.

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is a ubiquitously expressed heterodimeric transcription factor that mediates adaptive responses to hypoxia in all nucleated cells of metazoan organisms. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α is involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension in humans and animals, but whether HIF-1α is associated with the development of pulmonary hypertension syndrome (also known as ascites syndrome, AS) in broiler chickens has not been determined. In the present paper we addressed this issue by measuring the expression of HIF-1α mRNA in hearts and lungs of broiler chickens with AS induced by excess salt in drinking water. We conducted 2 experiments. The first experiment was used to observe the effects of excess salt on AS incidence. The results indicated that total incidence (20%) of AS in excess salt group (receiving 0.3% NaCl in drinking water) was much higher compared with the control group (receiving tap water) over a 43-d time course (P < 0.05). In the second experiment, we determined mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP), ascites heart index (AHI), and expression of HIF-1α mRNA in lungs and hearts of broiler chickens after the excess salt treatment. Our results showed that excess salt induced pulmonary hypertension (indicated by higher mPAP) and right ventricular hypertrophy (greater ascites heart index) in broiler chickens. Meanwhile, the expression levels of HIF-1α mRNA in lungs and hearts were significantly increased at different time points in the excess salt group compared with the control group. Linear correlation analysis showed that the expression of HIF-1α mRNA in lungs was significantly positively correlated with mPAP (correlation coefficient = 0.79, P < 0.001), demonstrating that expression of HIF-1α mRNA was gradually increased in the excess salt group with the increase of pulmonary arterial pressure. In addition, the ascitic chickens showed significantly higher transcriptional levels of HIF-1α in hearts and lungs, compared with the age-matched healthy chickens, respectively. Our findings hinted that HIF-1α might be associated with the development of AS induced by excess salt in drinking water in broiler chickens.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary magnesium sulfate supplementation on heat stress-induced oxidative damage in broilers. One hundred twenty 14-day-old broilers were randomly assigned into four treatment groups with three replicates of ten birds each. The broilers were reared under normal ambient temperature (24 ± 1°C) fed with a basal (control) diet or reared under high ambient temperature (35 ± 1°C between 1000 and 1800 h, 8 h each day) fed with a basal diet supplemented with magnesium sulfate (0, 2.5 or 5.0 mg/kg of diet) from 14 to 42 days of age. Growth performance and oxidative damage were evaluated in each treatment group. Our results demonstrated that dietary magnesium sulfate supplementation significantly prevented heat stress-induced oxidative damage and improved growth performance in broilers compared with that of control. Mechanistically, this beneficial effect was mediated, at least partly, by restoring the activity of anti-oxidative enzymes. This finding suggests that magnesium sulfate supplementation might be a potential strategy to attenuate heat stress-induced detrimental effects in broilers raised in summer season or tropical areas.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is characterized by high pulmonary blood pressure, vascular remodeling and right ventricular hypertrophy. In the present study, we investigated whether genistein would prevent the development of low temperature-induced pulmonary hypertension in broilers. Hemodynamic parameters, vascular remodeling, the expression of endothelial nitric oxide and endothelin-1 content in lung tissue were evaluated. The results demonstrated that genistein significantly reduced pulmonary arterial hypertension and suppressed pulmonary arterial vascular remodeling without affecting broilers' performance. The beneficial effects appeared to be mediated by restoring endothelial function especially endothelial nitric oxide and endothelin-1, two critical vasoactive molecules that associated with the development of hypertension. Rationale and Objective: The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) caused by avian influenza H5N1 viral infection has been reported in many humans since this virus was found to infect humans in Hong Kong in 1997, but no studies regarding an animal model of ARDS with H5N1 viral infection have been found in the literature. Here we present a mouse model of ARDS induced by H5N1 virus., Methods: Six- to 8-wk-old BALB/c mice were inoculated intranasally (50 micro l) with 1 x 10(2) 50% mouse infectious doses of A/Chicken/Hebei/108/2002 (H5N1) virus. Lung injury was assessed by observation of lung water content and histopathology. Arterial blood gas, white blood cell count in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum were measured at the indicated time points., Results: Our data showed that H5N1 viral infection in mice resulted in typical ARDS, which was characterized by the following features: (1) about 80% of mice (13 of 16) dead on Days 6 to 8 postinoculation; (2) highly edematous lungs and dramatically increased lung wet:dry weight ratios and lung wet weight:body weight ratios; (3) inflammatory cellular infiltration, alveolar and interstitial edema, and hemorrhage in lungs; (4) progressive and severe hypoxemia; and (5) significant increase in neutrophils, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-6 in BALF., Conclusion: These results suggested that we successfully established a mouse model of ARDS with H5N1 viral infection, which may benefit further investigation into the pathogenesis of human ARDS induced by H5N1 virus.

Magnesium deficiency and oxidative stress have been identified as correlative factors in many diseases. The origin of free radicals correlated with oxidative damage resulting from Mg-deficiency is unclear at the cellular level. To investigate whether hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is associated in the oxidative stress induced by Mg-deficiency, the effect of Mg2+ deficiency (0, 0.4, 0.7 mM) on the metabolism of H2O2 was investigated in cultured chick embryo hepatocytes. After being cultured in the media with various concentrations of Mg2+ for 1, 2, 4, 6 and 10 days, parameters of H2O2 production, catalase activity, lipid peroxidation, intracellular total Mg and cell viability were analyzed. Results demonstrated that long-term incubation of chick embryo hepatocyte in extracellular Mg2+-deprivative and Mg2+-deficient (0.4 mM) states significantly enhanced the production of H2O2 (approximately twofold, respectively) and lipid peroxidation in the cell cultures, while decreasing the cell viability. Additionally, the reversing action of Mg2+ re-added to 1.0 mM and the partial reversing action of dimethylthiourea suggested that (i) [Mg2+]e deficiency induced the increase of H2O2 production, (ii) [Mg2+]e deficiency decreased catalase activity in chick embryo hepatocyte in vitro, subsequently causing oxidative stress and cell peroxidative damage.
