Sapphires crystals were identified in the corundum-bearing xenoliths in Miocene (Upper to Middle Sarmathian) andesites of the Slanské vrchy Mountains, eastern Slovakia at the Záhradné, Hubošovce and Vechec localities. The sapphire crystals occur in (1) micaceous xenoliths, which are built mostly of dark mica from annite-phlogopite series (biotite), K-feldspars, plagioclase with abundant inclusions of hercynite, ilmenite and Ti-rich magnetite, locally with pyroxenes of enstatite-ferosilite series at the localities Záhradné and Hubošovce. Less abundant are sapphires occurring in cordieritic xenoliths (2), dominantly consisting of cordierite, plagioclase and sillimanite with minor hercynite and ilmenite inclusions discovered in the Vechec quarry. Sapphires are dark blue to light blue with vitreous to diamond lustre and no visible pleochroic colour change forming mostly pseudohexagonal tabular, locally more complex euhedral to subhedral crystals up to 2.0 mm in size with triangular-shaped patterns on crystal faces. Raman spectroscopy showed characteristic corundum peaks at 419 cm-1 A1g mode and 384 cm-1 Eg mode with other peaks assigned to Al2O3 crystal vibrations. Chemical composition (EPMA, LA-ICP-MS) shows typical content of 98.12-99.60 wt. % Al2O3 with increased concentrations of Fe, Ti, Cr, V, Mg and Ga, locally also Na, Ca, K, B and Li. Genesis of corundum-bearing xenoliths interpreted from paragenetic observations and geochemical data shows clear metamorphic trend. Formation of sapphires was caused by incorporation of Al-rich precursor metasediments depleted in silica into the magmatic reservoir, which caused thermal overprint of the precursor mineral assemblage and led to the formation of high temperature mineral association suitable for corundum crystallization. Furthermore, sapphire crystals from the Hubošovce quarry exhibit spinel coronas, which are typically developed from destabilization of corundum during their retrograde development. The Santa María and Antares Zn-Pb(-Ag) skarn deposits in the Velardeña Mining District are located in central–NW Mexico. They lie 470 m apart along the contact between Oligocene felsic intrusions and Cretaceous limestones, and were developed during prograde, retrograde, post-ore (Santa María), and late stages. Firstly, the prograde stage was formed by fluids at ~ 600 °C and 15 wt% NaCl equiv., and consists of garnet + wollastonite ± clinopyroxene and biotite ± K-feldspar assemblages. Secondly, the retrograde/ore stage was formed by fluids at 300–500 °C with salinities of 20–30 wt% CaCl2 (Santa María) and > 40 wt% NaCl equiv. (Antares). It comprises assemblages of chlorite, amphibole, epidote, calcite, scapolite, quartz, sericite, adularia, fluorite, and muscovite associated with sphalerite, pyrite, galena, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, and Pb-Bi-Sb sulfosalts. Thirdly, the post-ore stage was formed by fluids at ~ 400 °C and 20–30 wt.% CaCl2 and comprises poorly mineralized calcite veins. Fourthly, the late stage was formed by fluids at < 300 °C and 20–30 wt.% CaCl2 (Santa María) and ~ 15 wt% NaCl equiv. (Antares), and crystallized tetrahedrite-group minerals and pyrite + marcasite. δ18Ofluid between ~ 14‰ and 23‰ at Santa María and between ~ 12‰ and 17‰ at Antares show a less-modified magmatic affinity for mineralizing fluids at Antares; δ13Cfluid between 0‰ and –6‰ register recycling of sedimentary C. Moreover, sulfides with δ34SVCDT between –3‰ and 2‰ reveal a magmatic source for S. Altogether, these data suggest that, at Santa María, magmatic-derived fluids actively interacted with the wall rocks, whereas at Antares the fluid-rock interaction was milder. In both deposits, metal deposition was triggered by the cooling and neutralization of ore-bearing fluids with carbonate rocks. Our 40Ar/39Ar dates for adularia of ca. 37.5 Ma place the deposits within the Eocene–early Miocene metallogenetic epoch of central–NW Mexico, during which other world-class skarn-epithermal systems were emplaced (e.g., Concepción del Oro and Mazapil-Peñasquito). Examination of a fossil from a Miocene Konservat-Lagerstätte (c. 11–16 Mya) from Australia shows it to be an astioid jumping spider that is here described as Simaetha sp. indet. Fossilization in the iron oxide–hydroxide mineral goethite led to a high-fidelity preservation of not only the exterior, but of the pharyngeal plate and a neuropile in the cephalothorax. The discovery of the fossil supports the molecular-based hypothesis that the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene radiation of astioid genera occurred in Australasia. Modern Asian genera then would be the result of northward migrations from Australia rather than a movement in the other direction. Biogeographically, the Miocene Simaetha fits within the predicted bioclimatic distribution of the genus today, though the bioclimatic requirements of the fossil species are now found in eastern Queensland rather than in central New South Wales. Simaetha , it seems has retained its original bioclimatic profile for 15 Myr, even though climatic and ecological conditions in Australia have changed significantly. The fossil record now shows the independent evolution of modern genera during the Early Miocene in at least five different salticid lineages on two continents. The aridification of the Australian continent led to the diversification of mygalomorph spiders in the Miocene, but a depauperate fossil record has made it difficult to investigate evolution across this epoch. Here, we describe the first fossil barychelid spider (Araneae: Barychelidae) in the world and the second fossil mygalomorph spider from Australia. It is placed as a new genus and species (Megamonodontium mccluskyi gen. et sp. nov.). Megamonodontium resembles Monodontium Kulczyński, 1908, a genus that persists in rainforests through Singapore, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The new specimen is the second largest spider fossil in the world and is approximately five times larger than extant Monodontium. The fossil shows that this lineage once occupied mesic rainforest habitats in Australia but has since been replaced by other spiders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subduction-related magmatism is a significant contributor to arc building and continental growth. In the active convergent margin of the SW Japan arc, voluminous volcanic rocks and mafic dykes formed through subduction and back-arc rifting during Miocene. In this study, we investigate a suite of felsic volcanic rocks (rhyolite and dacite) and lamprophyres from central Shikoku Island, which occur in the north-central part of the Chichibu belt and Sanbagawa belt in the Outer zone of the SW Japan arc. Whole-rock geochemistry results show that the rhyolite and dacite samples are peraluminous, belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series, show LREE and LILE enrichment, HREE and HFSE depletion that suggest arc volcanic affinity. The lamprophyre samples belong to alkali lamprophyre, show LREE and HFSE enrichments, and display OIB (oceanic island basalt)-like geochemical features. The 206Pb/238U weighted mean ages of the zircons from the rhyolite and dacite samples range from 14.39 ± 0.21 Ma to 13.92 ± 0.30 Ma, whereas the lamprophyre shows 206Pb/238U weighted mean age of 12.21 ± 0.35 Ma. Zircon Lu-Hf isotope data suggest that the rhyolite and dacite were derived from the remelting of the arc crustal rocks and that the lamprophyre was derived from depleted mantle sources and was contaminated by crustal materials. The felsic volcanic rocks (rhyolite and dacite) can be correlated to Miocene (15.5 Ma to 13.5 Ma) magmatism in the Outer Zone of the SW Japan arc. The formation of lamprophyre dykes in the SW Japan arc may be related to the subhorizontal mantle flows beneath the SW Japan arc associated with the opening of the Japan Sea back-arc basin or asthenosphere upwelling through the slab-tear of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the SW Japan arc. This contribution studies some paleobiological aspects of Opisthodactylus kirchneri , a fossil rheid from the Late Miocene of northwestern Argentina. We estimate the body mass of this species using an allometric equation based on long-legged birds. Besides, we estimate the maximum running speed by applying a previously published biomechanical model to study other living and fossil running birds. We perform multivariate analyses with hindlimb measurements used as biomechanical model inputs to compare the fossil rheid with other living ratite species. We found that O. kirchneri would not have been a swift runner as living rheids of South America. We identify the presence of a long distal hindlimb segment correlated with a novel adaptation to paleoenvironmental conditions in southern South America during the Late Miocene. Source rock evaluation and basin modelling play crucial roles in understanding hydrocarbon potential. In this study, pyrolysis data from 92 shale ditch samples were employed to assess the source rocks in the Abu Gharadig Basin (Western Desert, Egypt). The organic richness ranged from 0.53% to 4.1% by weight, indicating varying hydrocarbon‐generating capabilities. Specifically, kerogen types II and III exhibited the potential to generate hydrocarbons, ranging from fair to good oil sources. The burial history analysis provided insights into the sedimentation and subsidence rates during different geological periods. The Late Jurassic‐Early Cretaceous period witnessed modest rates of sedimentation and subsidence. In contrast, the Oligocene and Late Miocene periods experienced medium burial rates, while the Late Cretaceous‐Early Tertiary period exhibited high burial rates. Specific formations were examined in detail, with the Apollonia Formation standing out as a significant hydrocarbon reservoir. It entered the early oil window at approximately 17.87 Ma and the wet gas window at about 17.41 Ma in the ASSIL‐1X well. However, it didn't reach the GPAA‐4 well. The Abu Roash 'D' member also showed promise, entering the early oil window at 38.20 and 47.38 Ma, and the wet gas window at 37.40 and 43.64 Ma. Similarly, the Abu Roash 'F' member exhibited favourable hydrocarbon generation, entering the early oil window at 39.90 and 54.86 Ma, and the wet gas window at 39.70 and 51.62 Ma in both the ASSIL‐1X and GPAA‐4 wells. Based on the analysis, the Apollonia, Abu Roash 'D' and 'F' members were identified as source rocks, while the Kharita, 'C', 'E' and 'G' members were recognized as reservoir rocks. The Abu Roash Shale acted as an effective seal rock. The geological structure of the region revealed the presence of NW‐SE normal faults, forming a three‐way dip closure trap. This research substantially enhances our comprehension of the hydrocarbon system within this basin. It achieves this by thoroughly investigating source rock evaluation, basin modelling and delivering invaluable insights into the mechanisms that govern hydrocarbon generation, expulsion and trap age. Borehole image data and a 1D-stress model built on open hole logs, leak-off tests (LOT) and image logs are used to evaluate the potential of seismicity caused by fault triggering during geothermal heat production in the city of Vienna. Data were derived from a 4220 m deep geothermal exploration well that investigated the geothermal potential of fractured carbonates below the Miocene fill of the Vienna Basin. The well penetrated several normal faults of the Aderklaa Fault System (AFS) that offset Pleistocene terraces at the surface and hence are regarded as active. Stress-induced borehole failures and 1D geomechanical modeling proves that the potential reservoirs are in a normal fault stress regime with Sv > SHmax > Shmin. While stress magnitudes in the upper part of the well (down to about 2000 m) are significantly below the magnitudes that would trigger the rupture of critically oriented faults including the AFS, stresses in the lower part of the drilled section in the pre-Neogene basement (below about 3300 m) are not. Data evidence a rotation of SHmax for about 45° at a fault of the AFS at 3694 m to fault-parallel below the fault suggesting that the fault is active. Critical or near-critical stressing of the fault is corroborated by the stress magnitudes calculated from the 1D geomechanical model. The safety case to exclude unintended triggering of seismic fault slip by developing geothermal reservoirs in close vicinity to one of the branch faults of the AFS may therefore be difficult or impossible to make. Summary: The order Boraginales of the Lamiids clade encompasses a diverse group of plants that currently has a global distribution. Its fossil record is scanty. Herein we report a fossil wood of Cordia L. of the family Cordiaceae from the Tipam Sandstone (late Miocene) sediments of Assam, northeast India. This finding not only throws light on the phytogeography and diversification of the Cordiaceae, but also provides valuable insights into the Neogene vegetation of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fossil remains from the latest Messinian of Casino Basin (Tuscany, Italy) are known since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Among the others, the mammal assemblage includes Mesopithecus pentelicus, Tapirus arvernensis, Propotamochoerus provincialis and scarce and poorly preserved remains of a hippopotamid, consisting of a mandibular symphysis fragment, an apical fragment of a lower canine, some isolated lower incisors, a fragmented second upper premolar and a second lower molar. These specimens were initially referred as Hippopotamus hipponensis and later ascribed to the new species Hippopotamus pantanellii (recently reported as Hexaprotodon? pantanellii). However, this attribution has been disputed during the past years. The hippopotamid remains from the Casino Basin are revised here in order to clarify their systematic position and to infer paleobiogeographic and evolutionary patterns within the Mediterranean fossil record of Hippopotamidae. The morphology of the remains collected from the Casino Basin more closely resembles the African than the Asian hippopotamids' lineage and therefore the Tuscan remains should be more properly referred as Archaeopotamus pantanellii. The latter species probably dispersed into Tuscany from the Iberian Peninsula where the presence of Archaeopotamus crusafonti is well documented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] Global warming during the Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO, ∼17–14 million years ago) is associated with massive carbon emissions sourced from the flood basalt volcanism and ocean crustal production. However, the perturbation of tectonic carbon degassing on the interaction between climate change and carbon cycle remains unclear. Here, through time-evolutive phase analysis of new and published high-resolution benthic foraminiferal oxygen (δ 18O) and carbon (δ 13C) isotope records from the global ocean, we find that variations in the marine carbon cycle lead the climate-cryosphere system (δ 13C-lead- δ 18O) on 405,000-year eccentricity timescales during the MCO. This is in contrast to the previously reported climate-lead-carbon (δ 18O-lead- δ 13C) scenario during most of the Oligo-Miocene (∼34–6 million years ago). Further sensitivity analysis and model simulations suggest that the elevated atmospheric CO 2 concentrations and the resulting greenhouse effect strengthened the low-latitude hydrological cycle during the MCO, accelerating the response of marine carbon cycle to eccentricity forcing. Tropical climate processes played a more important role in regulating carbon-cycle variations when Earth's climate was in a warm regime, as opposed to the dominant influence of polar ice-sheet dynamics during the Plio-Pleistocene (after ∼6 million years ago). The Drosophila repleta group is one of the most widely used model systems for studying adaptation and speciation. Traditionally, five subgroups are recognized within the repleta group: fasciola, hydei, mercatorum, repleta and mulleri. A sixth subgroup, inca, was the last to be defined. The inca species subgroup includes three species: Drosophila inca, Drosophila huancavilcae and Drosophila yangana, all of which are endemic to Ecuador and Peru. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies have been inconclusive regarding the geographic location, time and mode of diversification of lineages within the repleta group. By applying a phylogenetic and biogeographical analysis of 54 taxa belonging to the repleta, nannoptera, atalaia and virilis groups, the aim of this study was to: (1) determine the relationships between the inca subgroup and the other five subgroups within the repleta group, (2) improve the unresolved branching and low supports of the early divergent lineages in the repleta group phylogeny and (3) estimate the geographic and temporal context of the early divergence within the repleta group. Based on these findings, it is proposed that the Drosophila repleta group first diversified during the mid-late Miocene, most likely following the uplift of the Northwestern Andes. Several dolphin lineages have independently invaded freshwater systems. Among these, the evolution of the South Asian river dolphin Platanista and its relatives (Platanistidae) remains virtually unknown as fossils are scarce. Here, we describe Pebanista yacuruna gen. et sp. nov., a dolphin from the Miocene proto-Amazonia of Peru, recovered in phylogenies as the closest relative of Platanista. Morphological characters such as an elongated rostrum and large supraorbital crests, along with ecological interpretations, indicate that this odontocete was fully adapted to fresh waters. Pebanista constitutes the largest freshwater odontocete known, with an estimated body length of 3 meters, highlighting the ample resource availability and biotic diversity in the region, during the Early to Middle Miocene. The finding of Pebanista in proto-Amazonian layers attests that platanistids ventured into freshwater ecosystems not only in South Asia but also in South America, before the modern Amazon River dolphin, during a crucial moment for the Amazonian evolution. The modern East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) features an extension from tropical to subtropical areas. However, the fundamental process that determines the northward extension of EASM in the geological history remains unclear. Here, we showed evidence from proxy data, climate modeling, and theoretical solutions that the northward extension of EASM to today's boundary emerged no later than the Miocene. The extension was driven by the monsoon seasonal march which features stepwise northward rainfall stages. The seasonal progression of monsoon was determined by Rossby wave responses from early summer to late summer and caused by the weakening of westerly jet colliding with the Tibetan Plateau (TP). The Rossby wave responses further led to a northward migration of the western Pacific subtropical high and thereby monsoon precipitation. Our findings propose a novel physical linkage between the geological evolution of EASM and the TP uplift in the context of monsoon seasonal march. Plain Language Summary: The seasonal march of the modern East Asian summer monsoon, characterized as stepwise northward rainfall stages, is one unique feature and the most fundamental process of northward extension of East Asian summer monsoon. However, its geological history and controlling processes remain unknown. Here, we found that the seasonal progression of the monsoon emerged no later than the Miocene and was driven by the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. The emergence of the seasonality has pushed the East Asian summer monsoon northward to today's boundary. Cetotheriidae is a family of baleen whales that went nearly extinct during the Pleistocene (excluding Caperea marginata). For a long time, the Cetotheriidae family has been seen as a problematic clade, but in the past two decades there have been various studies trying to resolve the phylogeny of this group. In 1831, Alexandre Vandelli described three cetotheriid skulls, found during a gold exploration at Adiça beach (Portugal). These specimens constituted the first Portuguese vertebrate fossils ever published in the literature. Another skull was added to the "Vandelli skulls" by Jacinto Pedro Gomes, in 1914, during a survey of the Museu Nacional de História Natural collections without giving information on the origin of this skull. In 1941, Remington Kellogg states that one of the original "Vandelli skulls" is no longer present in the Museu Nacional de História Natural collections. Until today, there is no information on how, or exactly when, the fourth skull and one of the original three "Vandelli skulls" appeared and disappeared, respectively. Since their discovery, all the attempts to describe these specimens were not based on direct observations and no comprehensive phylogenetic analysis have included the three skulls. Here we provide a detailed anatomic description, a new phylogenetic analysis and a palaeoecological reconstruction of these specimens, clarifying their relationships within the Cetotheriidae family and fostering the importance of these historical specimens to the modern comprehension of fossil whale evolution. In addition, our results support that Cephalotropis nectus is a valid species with an emended diagnosis. Teredinidae is a family of bivalves occupying a spatial range of brackish to open-marine benthic niches and a stratigraphic range from Jurassic to recent. The teredinid genus Kuphus occurs within the calcareous muddy stiffground to hardground as vertical to inclined calcareous tubes. The ichnogenera Teredolites and Apectoichnus encompass the borings generally produced by the teredinids/shipworms. In the Kutch Basin, solitary teredinid borings range from the Eocene to the Early Miocene. Each subvertical boring has a calcareous wall with growth annulations on its outer surface. These tubes do not display any homeomorphic exoskeletal character. Rather, they manifest the producer's ethology of mechanical boring into the organic-rich stiffground to hardground substrates and sustenance through microbially mediated chemosymbiosis. A systematic ichnotaxonomy is presented here for the solitary 'Kuphus tubes' which are classified as a new ichnospecies: Teredolites solitarius. The taphonomic analysis of the borings is based on the size, shape, orientation, and composite secondary borings, which are used in ascertaining the depositional conditions and palaeoecology. Two distinct taphofacies, i.e. TS-A and TS-B, have been identified. The TS-A represents the in-situ vertical morphotype formed in a restricted intermittently brackish mud-dominated inner carbonate ramp setting. Premise of research. The genus Carya is a classic example of the eastern North American–eastern Asian disjunct distribution, but its biogeographic history is not well understood because many species present in the Cenozoic of Europe have ambiguous relationships to extant species. Methodogy. The morphology and anatomy of fossil nuts of C. ventricosa (Sternberg ex Brongniart) Unger from the Miocene of Salzhausen, Germany, of eight extant Carya species, and of four extant Juglans species were investigated using micro–computed tomography scanning. Carpological characteristics were analyzed using VG Studio for comparison. The morphological characters of 25 other Carya fruit fossils known from the literature were studied for comparison. Pivotal results. The peripheral course of the placental bundles within the primary septum of C. ventricosa confirms its identity to the genus Carya and distinguishes it from Juglans and from other genera of the Juglandaceae. Detailed comparison of carpological morphology and anatomy indicates that C. ventricosa is readily distinguished from extant North American species and more closely resembles the East Asian tropical C. poilanei ; both have a prominent low-density layer and/or prominent lacunae in the nutshell and contrast with other species in lacking a sharply defined pair of internal longitudinal ribs. The well-developed secondary septum in C. poilanei differs from the weakly developed, nearly absent secondary septum in C. ventricosa. The cuneate base of the locule distinguishes C. ventricosa from all extant species. Conclusions. Carya poilanei is the closest extant species to C. ventricosa. Europe might have been a key center of Cenozoic diversification and served as the ancestral area of the extant East Asian Carya lineages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ichnofossils have been defined for the first time from the rocks exposed along the Katilu Khad section, Dunera, Punjab (India) of Miocene succession. Eight ichnotaxa with 12 ichnospecies have been recorded, including Arenicolites isp., Beaconites coronus, Helminthopsis tenuis, Lockeia siliquaria, Palaeophycus tubularis, Palaeophycus isp., Planolites annularis, P. beverleyensis, Skolithos linearis, Taenidium barretti, T. cameronensis, and T. serpentinum. The present ichnofossil assemblages are recognised by two ichnofacies – Scoyenia and Mermia. Scoyenia ichnofacies is typified by less diversity but a high abundance of meniscate burrow (Taenidium and Beaconites), whereas Mermia ichnofacies shows high diversity grazing and feeding traces with low abundance. The nannoplankton research was conducted in the MH-2 well, Banggai-Sula Basin, Central Sulawesi. Thirty-four ditch-cutting samples were utilized to observe the Minahaki, Kintom, and Biak Formations. Age determination was carried out using biostratigraphy method and standard procedure for first and last occurrence of nannoplankton biodatum and had an absolute age, widely known as a zone indicator. This study aims to determine the age and nannoplankton biozonation of each geological formation in Banggai-Sula Basin. Based on the biostratigraphic analysis, 39 species from 14 genera with abundance frequencies ranging from rare to abundant were found in the MH-2 well. In this study, new results of the age of Banggai-Sula Basin areMiddle Miocene - Early Middle Pliocene (13,706 - 3,727 Ma), and can identify into six calcareous nannoplankton zones that are more detailed than previous researchers, Discoaster signus zone (NN5), Discoaster exilis zone (NN6-NN7), Discoaster berggrenii zone (NN11), Ceratolithus acustus zone (NN12), Helicosphaera sellii zone (NN13-NN15), and the Discoaster tamalis zone (NN16). Biostratigraphic data also shows new information for the first time, the absence of three zones from zone NN8 to zone NN10. The Murchison and Maruia basins are situated on the Australian Plate adjacent the Alpine Fault, an ideal place to study Cenozoic Australian–Pacific plate boundary evolution. Sandstone provenance was investigated using petrographic and detrital zircon U–Pb geochronologic methods and primarily varies geographically. Secondary up-section variation tracks spatiotemporal changes in basement exhumation. Eocene–middle Miocene western Murchison Basin sandstone is arkosic, derived locally from Devonian–mid-Cretaceous granitoids. Early Miocene–?Pliocene eastern Murchison and Maruia basin sandstone is lithic-/plagioclase-rich, reflecting a mixed provenance: proximal Carboniferous–mid-Cretaceous granitoids, and distal mid-Cretaceous Median Batholith and Permian–Triassic Eastern Province metasedimentary sources in the Pacific Plate. This confirms early Miocene Pacific Plate exhumation during initial Alpine Fault evolution began in northern Fiordland/western Otago but the contrast between eastern and western Murchison Basin indicates limited westward sediment dispersal. Higher proportions of Brook Street Terrane (BST) detrital zircon in middle Miocene eastern Murchison Basin sandstone suggests accelerated Pacific Plate exhumation at c. 15 Ma. By c. 10 Ma, the eastern Murchison Basin BST source had switched to the Australian Plate due to Waimea–Flaxmore fault reverse reactivation and dextral plate boundary strike-slip displacement, which by the late Miocene/Pliocene led to Rakaia Terrane-affinity Haast Schist replacing Caples Terrane as the main Maruia Basin sediment source. Geophysical and geological research in the Ulleung Basin has been ongoing since the 1970s, involving continuous seismic acquisition and multiple well-drilling projects. This study utilized an integrated quantitative approach with conventional seismic interpretation based on recent trends to understand the history of the shelf-margin development and individual controls that may have influenced each period in the Ulleung Basin. Quantitative analysis was conducted by measuring the progradation (Pse), aggradation (Ase) and sediment influx (Fc) of individual shelf margins in seven dip-oriented seismic profiles, and calculating the shelf-edge gradient (αse) and the P/A ratio. Based on these data and the ratio of accommodation to sediment supply (A/S ratio), which was interpreted from the stratal stacking pattern, five shelf-edge trajectory types were defined and assigned to each shelf margin. By considering individual controls (eustatic fluctuations, sediment supply and tectonic events), we defined the three evolution intervals of the Ulleung Basin during the Middle Miocene to Late Miocene (15 to 6.5 Ma): (1) the upper Middle Miocene (15 to 11.63 Ma) characterized by a moderate sediment supply and high aggradation margin induced by rapid subsidence, (2) the lower Upper Miocene (10.8 to 10 Ma) as a high sediment supply and low aggradation margin associated with reworked sediments from the uplifted Dolgorae Thrust and (3) the uppermost Miocene (9.2 to 6.5 Ma) characterized by a low sediment supply and low aggradation margin experiencing sediment starvation. A comparison with worldwide continental margins indicated that the Ulleung Basin formed under a relatively low rate of progradation (low sediment supply; 4.79 km/Myr) and a high rate of aggradation (high shelf accommodation; 361.04 m/Myr) condition. The SW margin of the Ulleung Basin provides a unique example of understanding stratigraphic architecture variations under changing stress regimes of back-arc setting (extensional to compressional) and understanding of individual controls that influence margin development. The Tibetan Plateau is the highest plateau on Earth. As an ideal place to decipher the intracontinental deformation mechanisms, the Tibetan Plateau has become a focus of Cenozoic geological studies. The surface uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau can help us to better understand continental collision and processes ranging from global cooling to the onset of the Asian monsoon. Although a lot of research has been done over the years, the mechanism and timing of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, especially the northern part, continue to be debated. To address how the Tibetan Plateau developed, a better understanding of the uplift and deformation history is needed. The Qiman Tagh Range lies on the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Knowing what led to the exhumation of the Qiman Tagh Range could help us to constrain the tectonic evolution of the northern boundaries of the Tibetan Plateau. Here, we present new apatite fission-track data and the thermal history for the north Qiman Tagh Range. The thermal history modeling indicates that the Qiman Tagh Range experienced a four-stage cooling history (i.e., at ca. 230 Ma, 130-90 Ma, ca. 35 Ma, and 20/10-0 Ma). The results reveal that the initial exhumation of the Qiman Tagh Range occurred in the Middle Triassic due to the collision between the western Qiangtang and eastern Qiangtang terranes and the northward colliding and collaging of the Kumukuri microcontinent with the south Qiman Tagh Terrane. The rapid exhumation during the Cretaceous resulted from the collisions between the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes. The Cenozoic exhumation may be related to the far-field stress effect of the India-Asia collision. Based on our new data, together with tectonic studies around the Qaidam Basin, we reconstructed the big Paleo-Qaidam Basin as it was during late Mesozoic and early Cenozoic time. The Mesozoic uplift of the Qiman Tagh Range was not high enough to form topographical isolation, but the rapid uplift of the Qiman Tagh at ca. 35 Ma completely separated the Kumukol Basin to the south from the Qaidam Basin to the north. The Qiman Tagh Range has experienced an acceleration of uplift since the Miocene to present, which formed the current basinrange landform. The property of regional metamorphism at convergent plate margins is substantially related to the change of geothermal gradients, resulting in different types of crustal reworking through metamorphic dehydration and partial melting. The relationship between crustal metamorphism and thermal evolution of collisional orogens can thus be deciphered by investigating the change of metamorphic thermobaric ratios in both space and time. This is illustrated by a combined study of field observation, petrographic observation, whole-rock and mineral major and trace elements, laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry zircon and monazite U-Th-Pb isotopes and trace elements, and phase equilibrium modeling of granitic gneisses from the Cona area, southern Tibet, in the Himalayan orogen. The results reveal variations in spatial level, protolith age, petrological composition, and metamorphic pressure-temperature-time path along an N-S transect across the Higher Himalayas. On this basis, three types of granitic gneisses were identified for the Miocene metamorphism. Type I gneiss was formed at 16.2-14.7 Ma under upper amphibolite facies conditions of 720-735 °C and 0.77-0.82 GPa, Type II gneisses were formed at 18.3-14.3 Ma under granulite facies conditions of 765-795 °C and 0.99-1.06 GPa, and Type III gneisses were formed at 21.8-13.0 Ma under high-pressure granulite facies conditions of 850-875 °C and 1.40-1.45 GPa. These rocks underwent anatectic metamorphism at lower to upper crustal depths from 22 to 13 Ma, and their metamorphic thermobaric ratios increase from 586-803 °C/GPa at 22-18 Ma to 878-967 °C/GPa and finally to 1071 °C/GPa at 15-13 Ma. This increase corresponds to a progressive increase in metamorphic geothermal gradients from 16.1-22.0 °C/km to 24.1-26.5 °C/km and finally to 29.4 °C/km. Therefore, the crustal rocks in the Himalayan orogen experienced the three types of regional metamorphism at the three different geothermal gradients in the Miocene. The progressively elevated geothermal gradients are attributed to continental rifting due to asthenospheric upwelling consequential to thinning of the lithospheric mantle in the collisional orogen. How the origin of novel behaviors can shape the evolutionary trajectory of organisms in response to environmental change remains poorly understood. Birds, especially those with big brains like parrots, are benchmarks for their behavioral innovation capacity in novel environments. Here, we assess whether and how the emergence of open areas in the Neotropics that started in the middle Miocene influenced the evolution of nesting behavior in parrots and how they triggered changes in other life‐history traits. To address these questions, we use a phylogenetic‐based analyses of trait evolution in the subfamily Arinae (Neotropical parrots), focusing on habitat, nesting behavior, morphology, and life‐history traits (clutch size, incubation period and fledging period). Evolutionary reconstructions show that transitions to excavating behavior mostly happened when species colonized open areas, providing evidence that this behavior originated in open environments. Evolutionary models suggest that the new open areas and the excavator nesting behavior exerted new selective pressures on morphology and life‐history traits, leading to evolutionary changes towards larger clutch sizes and shorter fledging periods in excavator parrots. Our study indicates that excavator nesting behavior in Neotropical parrots has likely played a key role in allowing them to exploit the ecological opportunities available in newly formed open biomes. We present a detailed description of the Middle Miocene (Chokrakian and Karaganian) depositional environments of the Eastern Paratethys Sea in the southern Caspian Basin. The Chokrakian comprises a 500-m-thick succession of marls and sandstones, termed herein Javarem Formation, which formed in coastal marine environments. The lower Javarem Fm. Developed in calm lagoonal settings, indicating frequent exposure under a predominantly dry climate and occasional formation of evaporites. The upper part of the Javarem Fm. Is characterized by mixed siliciclastic-carbonatic sediments with ooids of agitated, warm, hypersaline tidal shoals. Above follows the about 500-m-thick Vashi Formation, which is correlated with the Karaganian regional stage. The formation is characterized by an alternation of reddish marls with thick sandstones and gravel beds with terrestrial gastropods, ubiquitous pedogenetic features and occasional root horizons. The depositional environment is interpreted as a floodplain with gravelly channels of an arid to semiarid climate. The successions of the Javarem and Vashi formations capture the transition from the shallow marine Iranian shelf into the northern Iranian coastal plain around 13.8 Ma, following the onset of the Miocene Climate Transition and the coinciding global sea level drop around the Langhian/Serravallian boundary. Zhangpu amber is an important source of Miocene bryophytes in China. Zhangpu amber originates from the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO), which is well known for the appearance of Dipterocarpaceae-dominated megathermal forests in East Asia. The humid and warm climate of these forests might have triggered the development of diverse epiphytic bryophytes; however, the Middle Miocene fossils of bryophytes are rare in Asia. Here, we present evidence for Pelekium (Thuidiaceae) in Zhangpu amber. The fossil is characterised by: (i) regularly pinnate ramifications; (ii) deltoid leaves with a single and percurrent Costa; (ⅲ) abundant unbranched and uniseriate paraphyllia covering the stems and branches; (ⅳ) differentiated stem and branch leaves. It represents the first fossil record of Pelekium, showing that the genus already existed in Fujian, South China during the Middle Miocene. Our fossil enriches the Neogene fossil record of bryophytes in East Asia. Extant Pelekium species comprises stenoecious plants that are mainly distributed in tropical areas, often grow on bark in humid forests. A slab with three tetradactyl avian footprints was excavated from the Agha Jari Formation (Mio-Pliocene) in the Zagros Mountains, southwest Iran, in the early last century and named as Urmiornis abeli. The name Urmiornis had been used for the didactyl bird fossil and ichnogenus name was later revised to Iranipeda. Validity of Iranipeda abeli has been discussed by authors in recent decades, and revision of the original material is necessary. Based on re-examination the holotype I. abeli reveals that this name is valid and it differs by long hallux, separate digit imprints and size of lateral digit II and IV traces with other large wading bird footprints. Iranipeda include three ichnospecies: I. abeli and I. millumi and I. intermedia by emended diagnosis of Iranipeda. Ciconiidae is the nearest track-maker candidate for Iranipeda. I. abeli type specimen has been collected from the lower part of the Agha Jari Formation and based on lithostratigraphic position and radiometric data, it is of Late Miocene age. Yarquen dolgopolae gen. et sp. nov. is described from fragmentary fossil bones (humerus and phalanges) found in the Middle Miocene Collón Curá Formation (Río Negro Province, Argentina). Fossil owls in Argentina are limited to occasional fragments as old as the Early Miocene to Late Pleistocene. Here, an extinct species is described. The humerus (MLP 92-V-10-86) is similar in size to that of the Short-eared Owl but differs mainly by the depth and arrangement of the fossa m brachialis, the fossa olecrani is shallow and rimless, the sulcus scapulotricipitalis is shallow, a pneumatic foramen located on a scar proximal to the condylus ventralis, the incisura intercondilaris is narrow and the condylus ventralis is rounded with a conspicuous groove running caudoventrally. The ungual phalanx of digit 1 shows a strongly curved corpus, lateral grooves on both sides, a processus extensorius dorsally directed, a flexor tubercle wide and robust and a crista slightly protruding that separates both cotylae. Aves recovered from the Collón Curá Formation correspond to diurnal hunters (Phorusrhacidae and Falconidae) to which is added this large owl that, like other Strigidae, presumably was nocturnal or crepuscular hunters. We describe here the Bovidae from the early Middle Miocene site of Maboko, Kenya, known for its rich and highly diverse assemblage of Primates. They are attributed to two taxa of slightly different sizes, Turcocerus africanus n.sp. and Kubanotragus pickfordi. In addition to Kenya, Turcocerus ranges through the Middle Miocene from Turkey to China; it might have originated in Africa but the lack of precise dating weakens any phylogeographic hypothesis. Kubanotragus has similar chronological and geographic ranges. Both Maboko species retain low levels of hypsodonty compared to their northern relatives and may have been less specialised for grazing than Eurasian taxa. The Maboko Bovidae illustrate an early diversification of the family in Africa that appears to pre-date the major diversification of Bovidae and appearance of the diverse clades that are characteristic of modern African pecoran faunas. Artemia is a genus of halophilic zooplanktons comprising bisexual and parthenogenetic forms, which is an important model for investigating adaption to hypersaline ecosystems. The genus Artemia in China comprises four species: A. sinica, A. tibetiana, A. franciscana and A. parthenogenetica. To investigate the evolutionary relationship of bisexual and parthenogenetic Artemia in China, we analyzed the morphometrics and phylogenetics among twenty-two geographical populations in China. We found significant morphological differentiation across different species and strains of Artemia in China, which exhibited a high level of intra-population variation. We also found overlaps in morphological characteristics between populations, which may raise challenges for the classification of Artemia species using traditional morphological methods. A. franciscana, which originated from various regions in America, was generally distributed along the Chinese coastlines through multiple human introductions. Additionally, native Asian clades split into Western and Eastern Lineages during the late Miocene due to the Himalayan orogeny. Within the Western Lineage, A. tibetiana can be grouped into three taxon units: A. tibeitiana, A. sorgeloosi and A. urmiana. We also found that the distribution and genetic structure of A. sinica were influenced by climate oscillations during the Pleistocene, which might play a pivotal role in driving the formation of parthenogenetic strains in the Eastern Lineage. We report the oldest fossil record of Istiophoridae from the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin (Western Paratethys) in Pucking, Austria (Lower Miocene, lower Acquitanian, ∼22.4 Ma). The studied specimen consists of fragments of five articulated vertebrae and a partially preserved second dorsal fin. We found that the Pucking specimen is only surpassed in age by an isolated vertebra from the Chandler Bridge Formation (South Carolina, U.S.A.), with ∼24.7–23.5 Ma. Pucking and the Chandler Bridge Formation differ in age by ∼1.1–2.6 Ma. The fossil istiophorid from the Chandler Bridge Formation was considered controversial due to the large gap in the fossil record between the first appearance of Istiophoridae and the last appearance of any other extinct billfish clade. Here we report that Pucking (Lower Miocene) and South Carolina (Oligocene) share the occurrence of Istiophoridae, †Xiphiorhynchinae (Xiphiidae), and †Aglyptorhynchinae (†Palaeorhynchidae). Our finding demonstrates that the coexistence of different groups of billfishes is maintained over time and that the Chandler Bridge specimen is a reliable record. Our work closes a temporal gap of ∼4.4 Ma between the previously recognized oldest Istiophoridae (∼18 Ma) and the last appearance of †Xiphiorhynchinae and †Aglyptorhynchinae. This result supports a longer evolutionary history for Istiophoridae, establishes continuity in the billfish fossil record, and is significant for future time calibrated phylogenies. †Serrivomer glehni, a new species of the Neogene saw-toothed eel (Anguilliformes, Serrivomeridae) is described based on the 55 specimens from the Middle–Upper Miocene Kurasi Formation of Sakhalin Island, Russia. This is the third record of fossil saw-toothed eels since the recovery of partial skeletons from the Miocene of Japan and Italy. The new species demonstrates close similarity to the extant Serrivomer species in overall body form and shape of separate bones and their complexes. The new species is characterized by the "longidentatus" type of vomerine dentition and by a single branchiostegal ray protruding beyond the hyoid bar, which suggests a close affinity to the modern S. sector. It can be reliably distinguished from all other species of Serrivomer by its lower number of vertebrae (134 vs. 140–172) and its larger cleithrum, which is positioned under the seventh instead of the eighth vertebral centrum. Nubecularia bioherms represent unique bioconstructions that are restricted to the upper Serravallian of the Paratethys and have been reported since the 19th century. They occur in the Central Paratethys in the late Sarmatian and the Eastern Paratethys in the Bessarabian both regional stages of the respective Paratethyan areas. In this study, several locations in the Vienna and Styrian basins of the Central Paratethys were studied out of which four localities were documented in detail (Wolfsthal, Maustrenk, St. Margarethen—Zollhaus, Vienna—Ruzickagasse) to reconstruct their sedimentary setting, their internal composition, and their indications of environmental parameters. The detailed studies included logging of outcrop sections, petrographic, facies and biotic analyses of polished slabs and thin sections and also cathodoluminescence analyses. These concluded that these bioconstructions are not only composed of the foraminifer Nubecularia but represent a complex mixture and interrelationships of Nubecularia, serpulids and microbial carbonate. Four boundstone types can be differentiated: Nubecularia boundstone, Nubecularia‐coralline algal boundstone, stromatolitic/thrombolitic boundstone and serpulid‐nubeculariid‐microbial boundstone. The first 3 types are characteristic of specific localities; the fourth type occurs in all studied locations and represents the terminal association on top of the three other types. The three basal boundstones are predominantly of columnar growth form irrespective of dominance of Nubecularia, coralline algae or microbial carbonate, and the terminal boundstone is widely irregularly organized. The general depositional environment is characterized by cross‐bedded oolitic grainstones with abundant quartz grains, miliolid foraminifers and mollusks. Intercalated are microbial carbonates mostly stromatolites but also thrombolites. This indicates a general high water energy environment interrupted by more calm periods when the microbial carbonate was built. The 3 basal types of bioconstructions are interpreted to reflect decreasing food supply and/or oxygenation from Nubecularia over Nubecularia‐coralline algal to stromatolitic/thrombolitic boundstone. The serpulid‐nubeculariid‐microbial boundstone reflects an internal succession with a decrease of the same parameters. Water depth is considered very shallow ranging from 0 to a few meters, and salinity was normal marine to hypersaline. The reconstructed paleoenvironment with dominating oolite shoals and seagrass meadows was not restricted to the Central Paratethys but extended over the entire Paratethys and represented the largest oolite facies area of the entire Cenozoic! The application of whole-rock compositions to trace magma evolution or crystal-melt equilibrium may be called into question when foreign crystals are incorporated into host magmas. To address this challenge, establishing the origins (orthocrysts, antecrysts, xenocrysts, etc.) of minerals with variable textures in magmatic plumbing systems is necessary. In this paper, we describe complex oscillatory zoning patterns of clinopyroxenes (Cpx) from the Miocene Majuangou (MJG) alkali basalts from West Qinling, China. Our detailed petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses unravel the origins of various Cpx crystals with distinct textural patterns, thereby providing information about magma storage, recharging and/or mixing, and transportation, as well as the reactions between crystals and melts/fluids. Based on textural patterns, Cpx may be divided into four types: normal (Type-1 Cpx), simple oscillatory (Type-2 Cpx), complex oscillatory (Type-3 Cpx), and grains that lack zoning (Type-4 Cpx, suggested to be orthocrysts). Through the textural characterization of Cpx, the comparison between different types of Cpx, and the relationships between Cpx major compositions from different lithologies, we concluded that Type-1–3 Cpx cores are antecrysts or xenocrysts with diverse origins: primitive magma (Type-1 Cpx cores), magma mush (Type-2 Cpx cores), and crustal granulite (Type-3 Cpx cores). The zoning patterns and the compositions of these Cpx crystals indicate at least three batches of magmatic activity, i.e., the Batch-1 low-Mg# magma (Mg#: 47.4–53.3), the Batch-2 primitive magma (Mg#: 57.2–64.5), and the Batch-3 low-Mg# host alkali magma (Mg#: 47.2–54.6). Cpx-melt thermobarometry demonstrates that at least two crustal magma reservoirs existed in the magma plumbing system at depths of 30.1 and 40.9 km. The antecrystic/xenocrystic Cpx cores were captured by, continued to grow in, and subsequently reacted with ascending K-rich melt/fluid. The spongy textures in Cpx cores/mantles are attributed to this reaction, which may be expressed as: Melt 1 (primitive or evolved) + K-rich melts/fluids + Cpx (CaMgSi2O6) = K-feldspar (KAlSi3O8) + ilmenite (FeTiO3) + Melt 2 (derivative). The products of this reaction (K-feldspar and ilmenite) filled the sieves in the spongy zones of Type-1–3 Cpx. This detailed investigation of compositional and textural features of Cpx antecrysts/xenocrysts suggests that the interactions between various interconnected magma reservoirs are widespread beneath the magmatic plumbing system. Our study emphasizes the importance of the incorporation of foreign crystals and the Cpx-melt/fluid reaction in magmatic plumbing system, which can significantly modify the whole-rock compositions and lead to the formation of spongy textures without the need for fractures and cracks in minerals. The purpose of this study is to describe a new fossil wood from the Middle Miocene of South Anatolia (Mersin) and to identify it and evaluate its palaeoenvironmental implications. Thin sections of transverse, tangential, and radial surfaces were examined and described using the terminology of the International Association of Wood Anatomists. The wood was determined to have characteristics of Ziziphus (Rhamnaceae). It is the first fossil wood of Ziziphus and is described as Ziziphoxylon sayaz Akkemik sp. nov. It is from the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO), which is a relatively warm interval in the Miocene. Indistinct annual growth ring boundaries and wide rings indicate optimum growth site conditions during its life time. The Badenian/Sarmatian boundary in the Central Paratethyan basins is characterised by a change from open marine conditions during the late Badenian to the assumed brackish conditions during the early Sarmatian. The foraminiferal and palynological results of the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary interval in the Babczyn 2 borehole (in SE Poland) showed that the studied interval accumulated under variable, unstable sedimentary conditions. The Badenian/Sarmatian boundary, as correlated with a sudden extinction of stenohaline foraminifera, is interpreted as being due to the shallowing of the basin. The lack of foraminifera and marine palynomorphs just above the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary can reflect short-term anoxia. The composition of the euryhaline assemblages, characteristic for the lower Sarmatian part of the studied succession, indicates from marine to hypersaline conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first fossil limoniid fly from the Miocene Fossil-Lagerstätte of Foulden Maar in New Zealand is described on the basis of an isolated well-preserved wing. The specimen is tentatively attributed to a new species Gynoplistia fouldensensis sp. nov. in the large extant genus Gynoplistia, which is well diversified in the country. Based on the field observations and tectono-sedimentary analysis, we suggest reconstruction of the geological evolution from case study of Northern Tunisia since the Eocene age. The reconstruction of the structural architecture of this region can be aided by knowing the spatiotemporal occurrence and the deformation of the Oligo‒Early Miocene deposits. In the research area, two depositional basin types that coexisted but in different tectonic settings were seen in the reconstruction of Oligo‒Early Miocene successions. In Northern Tunisia, the Late Eocene shortening episode led to a thin-skinned deformation that produced irregular basement topography. During the Oligo‒Early Miocene subduction process, the earliest lithofacies of the Maghrebian Numidian flysch deposited in deep marine offshore environment. Synchronously in the onshore, the second lithofacies of Fortuna were deposited in NW-trending extensional structures after a rifting episode that characterized north-eastern Tunisia (ante-nappes). During the Middle Miocene, the curving fore-arc of subduction between Africa and the Mesomediterranean Microplate dominated northern Tunisia. As a result, the Numidian basin was raised, resulting in thrust sheets in northwestern part of Tunisia, while the extensional structures supporting the Fortuna succession were closed and created push-up structures following transpressional deformation along the NW‒SE boundary faults. Continental collision has occurred in northern Tunisia since the Late Miocene, resulting in shortening structures, some elevated areas, and sedimentary gaps encompassing a substantial portion of the study area. Simple Summary: Nowadays, the infraorder Delphinida consists of oceanic dolphins and porpoises plus a handful of riverine and (sub-)Arctic forms. Overall, the delphinidans account for more than half of the living cetacean species, thus comprising the core of present-day marine mammal diversity. The fossil record indicates that a critical phase of the evolutionary history of Delphinida occurred during the Early Miocene (c. 23.0–16.0 million years ago) when the extinct genus Kentriodon first appeared and became widespread worldwide. Our paper deals with a new delphinidan fossil from northeastern Italy, namely, an incomplete skull with ear bones dating back to 20.4–19.0 million years ago. This new specimen is recognized herein as a representative of Kentriodon and specifically as the first unambiguous member of this genus from the Euro-Mediterranean region. Our new find represents the best candidate for being the most ancient member of Kentriodon. The evolutionary success of Kentriodon (which lasted until the Late Miocene, less than 11.3 million years ago) may have been favored by the evolution of a peculiar biosonar system exploiting narrow-band high-frequency sounds, which in turn would have been hardly detectable by large-bodied, predatory toothed whales. Furthermore, Kentriodon was seemingly characterized by a proportionally larger brain compared to many coeval toothed whales, which in turn may evoke enhanced behavioral capabilities. Nowadays, the infraorder Delphinida (oceanic dolphins and kin) represents the most diverse extant clade of Cetacea, with delphinids alone accounting for more than 40% of the total number of living cetacean species. As for other cetacean groups, the Early Miocene represents a key interval for the evolutionary history of Delphinida, as it was during this time span that the delphinidans became broadly distributed worldwide, first and foremost with the widespread genus Kentriodon and closely related forms. Here, we report on a new odontocete find from Burdigalian (20.4–19.0 Ma) deposits of the Friulian-Venetian Basin of northeastern Italy, consisting of the partial cranium of a small delphinidan with associated ear bones (right periotic, stapes, malleus and tympanic bulla). Osteoanatomical considerations and comparisons allow us to assign the studied specimen to the genus Kentriodon. This is the first confirmed record of Kentriodon from Europe as well as from the whole proto-Mediterranean region. Stratigraphic and phylogenetic considerations suggest that our new specimen may represent the geologically oldest member of Kentriodon. The evolutionary success of Kentriodon may correlate with the emergence of narrow-band high-frequency echolocation as a possible strategy to escape acoustic detection by large marine predators such as the squalodontids. In addition, the relatively high encephalization quotient of Kentriodon spp. may have provided these early dolphins with some kind of competitive advantage over the coeval non-delphinidan odontocetes. A new species of Bistolida Cossmann, 1920 is described fromthe Miocene of theCibalong area, Tasikmalaya Regency of western Java, Indonesia. Morphological analyses of theshell dimensions, outline, extremities, aperture shape, and apertural teeth shows a combinationofcharacters that are typical of the genus Bistolida. Cenozoic dolomitization of reefal carbonates has been widely found on many tropical islands worldwide. However, most ages and geochemical data obtained from bulk samples prevent a clear understanding of the previous complex diagenetic processes of these island dolostones due to a lack of in situ age and fluid composition. In this study, one deep borehole penetrated Cenozoic carbonates on Meiji Island in the southern South China Sea and massive dolostones with thicknesses over 400 m were uncovered. The in situ U–Pb geochronology and elemental analysis were conducted on the lower Nanwan Formation (upper Miocene) comprising undolomitized calcite (bioclast), replacive dolomite, and dolomite cement. Strontium isotope ages and U–Pb dates show that the penecontemporaneous replacive dolomitization occurred at 11.0–8.5 Ma, close to the deposition of precursor limestone. The dolomite cement precipitated at 8.5–6.0 Ma. In situ elemental analyses indicate that the formation of replacive dolomite and dolomite cement in the Nanwan Formation was probably controlled by seawater. The higher Mg/Ca ratio and lower Mn and Sr contents in dolomite cements show that their fluid underwent more evaporation. The dolomite content is positively related to the porosity of reefal limestones in the Nanwan Formation, suggesting that primary voids play an important role in fluid transportation during following dolomitization. Coralline algae and lime mud with algal fragments are beneficial for the rapid nucleation of dolomite. This study demonstrates that in situ elemental analysis using laser ablation has great potential for identifying the source of multistage dolomitizing fluids and can help refine the existing dolomitization model of isolated atolls. We have recovered disease-symptomatic monocot leaves from the middle Siwalik (late Miocene; 12–8 Ma) sedimentary strata of Himachal Pradesh, western Himalaya, India. Information about disease symptoms linked to fossil monocot leaves, however, is lacking. The present study therefore aims to elucidate their identity through the analysis of morphological characteristics of the plant pathogenic fungi (causal agent) associated with these disease symptoms. Black mildew disease caused by foliicolous fungal fossil-genus Meliolinites Selkirk ex Janson. and Hills (fossil Meliolaceae) is detected on infected host Siwalik monocot leaves. In the study presented here, we provide formal descriptions and illustrations for the fossil-genus. The pathogen Meliolinites is recognized by the presence of appressoria, phialides, mycelial seta, black non-ostiolate ascomata, and four-septate, five-celled ascospores. This is the first report of melioloid fungus causing black mildew disease on fossil monocot leaves. Here, we also reconstruct a possible disease cycle of black mildew pathogen on Siwalik monocot leaves. Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled (D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg, Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Miocene strata of the Claremont, Orinda, and Moraga formations of the Berkeley Hills (California Coast Ranges, USA) record sedimentation and volcanism during the passage of the Mendocino triple junction and early evolution of the San Andreas fault system. Detrital zircon laser ablation--inductively coupled plasma--mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) age spectra indicate a change in sedimentary provenance between the marine Claremont formation (Monterey Group) and the terrestrial Orinda and Moraga Formations associated with uplift of Franciscan Complex lithologies. A sandstone from the Claremont formation produced a detrital zircon chemical abrasion--isotope dilution--thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) maximum depositional age of 13.298 ± 0.046 Ma, indicating younger Claremont deposition than previously interpreted. A trachydacite tuff clast within the uppermost Orinda Formation yielded a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 10.094 ± 0.018 Ma, and a dacitic tuff within the Moraga Formation produced a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 9.974 ± 0.014 Ma. These results indicate rapid progression from subsidence in which deep- water siliceous sediments of the Claremont formation were deposited to uplift that was followed by subsidence during deposition of terrestrial sediments of the Orinda Formation and subsequent eruption of the Moraga Formation volcanics. We associate the Orinda tuff clast and Moraga volcanics with slab-gap volcanism that followed the passage of the Mendocino triple junction. Given the necessary time lag between triple junction passage and the removal of the slab that led to this volcanism, subsidence associated with ca. 13 Ma Claremont sedimentation and subsequent Orinda to Moraga deposition can be attributed to basin formation along the newly arrived transform boundary. Development and evaluation of models for tectonic evolution in the Cascadia forearc require understanding of along-strike heterogeneity of strain distribution, uplift, and upper-plate characteristics. Here, we investigated the Neogene geologic record of the Klamath Mountains province in southernmost Cascadia and obtained apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) thermochronology of Mesozoic plutons, Neogene graben sediment thickness, detrital zircon records from Neogene grabens, gravity and magnetic data, and kinematic analysis of faults. We documented three aspects of Neogene tectonics: early Miocene and younger rock exhumation, development of topographic relief sufficient to isolate Neogene graben-filling sediments from sources outside of the Klamath Mountains, and initiation of mid-Miocene or younger right-lateral and reverse faulting. Key findings are: (1) 10 new apatite AHe mean cooling ages from the Canyon Creek and Granite Peak plutons in the Trinity Alps range from 24.7 ± 2.1 Ma to 15.7 ± 2.1 Ma. Inverse thermal modeling of these data and published apatite fission-track ages indicate the most rapid rock cooling between ca. 25 and 15 Ma. One new AHe mean cooling age (26.7 ± 3.2 Ma) from the Ironside Mountain batholith 40 km west of the Trinity Alps, combined with previously published AHe ages, suggests geographically widespread latest Oligocene to Miocene cooling in the southern Klamath Mountains province. (2) AHe ages of 39.4 ± 5.1 Ma on the downthrown side and 22.7 ± 3.0 Ma on the upthrown side of the Browns Meadow fault suggest early Miocene to younger fault activity. (3) U-Pb detrital zircon ages (n = 862) and Lu-Hf isotope geochemistry from Miocene Weaverville Formation sediments in the Weaverville, Lowden Ranch, Hayfork, and Hyampom grabens south and southwest of the Trinity Alps can be traced to entirely Klamath Mountains sources; they suggest the south-central Klamath Mountains had, by the middle Miocene, sufficient relief to isolate these grabens from more distal sediment sources. (4) Two Miocene detrital zircon U-Pb ages of 10.6 ± 0.4 Ma and 16.7 ± 0.2 Ma from the Lowden Ranch graben show that the maximum depositional age of the upper Weaverville Formation here is younger than previously recognized. (5) A prominent steep- sided negative gravity anomaly associated with the Hayfork graben shows that both the north and south margins are fault- controlled, and inversion of gravity data suggests basin fill is between 1 km and 1.9 km thick. Abrupt elevation changes of basin fill- to- bedrock contacts reported in well logs record E- side- up and right- lateral faulting at the eastern end of the Hayfork graben. A NE- striking gravity gradient separates the main graben on the west from a narrower, thinner basin to the east, supporting this interpretation. (6) Offset of both the base of the Weaverville Formation and the cataclasite- capped La Grange fault surface by a fault on the southwest margin of the Weaverville basin documents 200 m of reverse and 1500 m of right- lateral strike- slip motion on this structure, here named the Democrat Gulch fault; folded and steeply dipping strata adjacent to the fault confirm that faulting postdated deposition of the Weaverville Formation. Based on these findings, we suggest that Miocene rock cooling recorded by AHe ages, accompanying graben formation, and development of topographic relief record early to middle Miocene initiation of underplating or "subcretion" in the southern Cascadia subduction zone beneath the southern Klamath Mountains. Identification of inversion tectonics and inverted structures is very important in petroleum exploration and production due to the positive or negative impacts they can exert on the hydrocarbon traps. In order to characterize the occurrence of multi-phase inversion tectonics and its effect in the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield, located in the southern Dezful Embayment (SW Iran), this research describes the structural style and deformation history through structural and tectono-sedimentary analyses. The results obtained from the interpretation of seismic profiles and the investigation of the geometry of the sedimentary layers across the growth structures indicate that the Rag-e-Sefid anticline is created from multiple fault-propagation folds. The final shape and geometry of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline are affected by the Rag-e-Sefid and Nourooz-Hendijan-Izeh Faults activity. The deformation history in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline is older than the south-eastern part of it. The Rag-e-Sefid Fault set in the north-western and south-eastern parts of the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield experienced activity at least during seven and four tectonic phases, respectively. Multiple fault-propagation folding and the fold axis rotation in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline controlled by the presence of several décollement surfaces and the occurrence of inversion tectonics along the pre-existing basement structures. Three-phase inversion tectonics along the Nourooz-Hendijan-Izeh Fault and the Rag-e-Sefid Fault set in the north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid Oilfield occurred at the Late Devonian-Carboniferous (positive inversion), Permian-Early Triassic (negative inversion), and Late Cenomanian-Early Turonian (positive inversion) boundaries and modified the evolutionary history of the sedimentary basin. The inversion affected hydrocarbon trap development at the Late Cretaceous and controlled their current conditions in the southern Dezful Embayment. Based on the hydrocarbon migration in these regions from the Late Miocene to the present day, the N-S trending (Pan Africa trend) north-western part of the Rag-e-Sefid anticline has a larger share of oil and gas compared to the NW-SE trending (Zagros trend) south-eastern part. The results of this study could add data to worldwide examples of the positive impact of tectonic inversion on the hydrocarbon traps development in the foreland of a collisional orogen. Western Anatolia is one of the fastest-extending continental regions. The approximately N-S extension, in three phases, generated grabens of various ages and trends. The first phase occurred during the late Oligocene-Early Miocene and caused the exhumation of the high‐grade metamorphic rocks in the footwall of the low‐angle detachment fault(s). This phase caused the NNE trending grabens, particularly in the northern areas. The second phase happened in the Late Miocene. The initial rise of the central horst (the Bozdağ Horst) bounded by the detachment faults corresponds to this extension. The third phase generated the dominant morphotectonic entities of western Anatolia, the E-W trending normal faults, and the associated grabens in Quaternary. Western Anatolia began rotating counter-clockwise since the westerly escape of the Anatolian Plate reached the region and caused the generation of the NE-NW trending conjugated strike-slip faults and the consequent grabens along the coastal areas in the Holocene. • Describe Cinnamomum fossil using leaf epidermal anatomy for the first time. • Tropical, warm and humid climatic conditions suggested during the deposition. • Review the phytogeography and highlight the phytogeographic implication of Cinnamomum. Cinnamomum Schaeffer (avocado, family Lauraceae), commonly known as cinnamon tree, is a highly diverse, economically important evergreen element of tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In the present work, several compressed leaf remains similar to modern leaves of Cinnamomum are recovered from the lower part of the Siwalik strata (middle Miocene) of Darjeeling foothills, eastern Himalaya. The fossil specimens are characterized by an elliptic to ovate lamina, acute to short acuminate apex, round to acute base, basal as well as suprabasal acrodromous type of primary venation, and anomocytic type of stomata. Based on leaf architecture (macro- and micromorphological features) and using leaf epidermal anatomy, these Siwalik fossil leaves are confidently assigned to the genus Cinnamomum and are recognized as a new species: C. miocenicum Mahato, Hazra et Khan. The evidence of current Siwalik specimens and earlier-reported fossil species similar to thermophilic Cinnamomum in appreciable numbers from other Siwalik localities (Darjeeling, Uttarakhand, and Nepal) suggests that Cinnamomum was a common Siwalik element, pointing toward the existence of tropical, warm and humid climate conditions during the Siwalik sedimentation time. This conclusion is also supported by epifoliar fungal remains recovered from cuticular fragments of this lauraceous taxon. This finding also represents an essential source of data for understanding Cinnamomum 's evolution and deep time diversification. This study documents palynomorph assemblages from the Oligocene through the Early Miocene, across the significant Warm-house to Cool-house transition, using a subsurface section from the AG-5 well, north Western Desert of Egypt. Although the Paleogene and Neogene strata occupied a large area of the land, little about vegetation and ecosystem processes that shaped the climate and biodiversity during this time window is known. Here, based on a comprehensive palynological analysis of the Oligocene to Early Miocene Dabaa and Moghra formations encountered in the AG-5 well, we show that the studied area was characterized by a humid tropical to subtropical climate during the Oligocene-Miocene time interval. The obtained results provide clear evidence of the poorly known Paleogene-Neogene ecosystem in North Africa. In terms of palynostratigraphical framework, three palynozones covering the late Oligocene-Early Miocene interval are recognized. Moreover, the recovered palynomorphs inferred a deposition of the Dabaa Formation under a normal marine, inner shelf to littoral environment. However, for the basal part of the Moghra Formation, a deposition in an offshore marine environment, outer shelf (high sea level, 100–200 m depth) is assumed, whereas a deposition in shallow coastal lagoons, estuary, or delta environment (low sea level) is presumed for its uppermost part. An approximative second order gravity inversion scheme by a truncated power series expansion is applied to derive the thickness of the Neogene, mostly clastic, sedimentary section of the Styrian Basins in South–East Austria, which are sub‐basins of the Pannonian Basin System. These sub‐basins with a derived thickness of up to 4 km are of interest for geothermal exploitation because of the increased geothermal gradient and heat flow observed in the Pannonian Basin in general and a geothermal gradient of 4°–5°/100 m measured in some wells in the Styrian Basin. The Styrian Basin also has been an area for hydrocarbon exploration in the past 50 years, with oil and gas show encountered in several exploration wells and one sub‐commercial gas discovery. The Miocene and Plio–Pleistocene volcanism in the Styrian Basin caused by Miocene crustal thinning is discussed in terms of the influence to the gravity inversion taking the aeromagnetic field into account. The volcanism is of relevance for the geothermal prospectivity but poses problems for the single layer‐based gravity inversion scheme. Results are discussed from a computational side comparing observed and calculated gravity fields but also the match with well data is discussed.
