We analysed visual observation data of the Tau Herculids collected between 2022 May 28 and June 1. The population index for the entire sample is 2.4. For the pre-peak period we find r=2.57+-0.23, the peak period yields r=2.38+-0.06. The ZHR maximum of the 1995 ejecta from comet Schwassmann-Wachmann3 (SW3) is found at 69.450 deg solar longitude (May 31, 05h04mUT, +-5min) with a ZHR=55+-7, corresponding to a spatial number density ND of approx. 380 meteoroids larger than 10mg in a cube with 1000km edge length. An earlier maximum occurred at 69.207 deg solar longitude (centred May 30, 23h UT) with a ZHR=18+-3 and is tentatively associated with SW3-ejecta from 1892. Effects of the radiant shift due to the large zenith attraction of about 10 deg for the radiant close to the horizon are discussed.

The fluctuations of the atom number between a Bose-Einstein condensate and the surrounding thermal gas have been the subject of a long standing theoretical debate. This discussion is centered around the appropriate thermodynamic ensemble to be used for theoretical predictions and the effect of interactions on the observed fluctuations. Here we introduce the so-called Fock state sampling method to solve this classic problem of current experimental interest for weakly interacting gases. A suppression of the predicted peak fluctuations is observed when using a microcanonical with respect to a canonical ensemble. Moreover, interactions lead to a shift of the temperature of peak fluctuations for harmonically trapped gases. The absolute size of the fluctuations furthermore depends on the total number of atoms and the aspect ratio of the trapping potential. Due to the interplay of these effect, there is no universal suppression or enhancement of fluctuations.

Catalogs of the Zurich Observatory contain positional information on sunspots, prominences and faculae in late 19th and early 20th centuries. This database is given in handwritten tabular form and was not systematically analysed earlier. It is different from the sunspot number time series made in Zurich and was obtained with a larger telescope. We trained a neural-network model for handwritten text recognition and present the database of reconstructed coordinates. The database obtained connects the earlier observations by Sp\"orer with later programs of the 20th century and supplements the sunspot-group catalogs of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. We also expect that the presented machine-learning approach and its deep capabilities will motivate the processing of a wide bulk of astronomical data, which is still given in non-digitized form or as plain scanned images.

Spectroscopic and interferometric measurements complement each other in extracting the fundamental properties of quantum many-body systems. While spectroscopy provides precise measurements of equilibrated energies, interferometry can elucidate the dynamical evolution of the system. For an impurity immersed in a bosonic medium, both are equally important for understanding the quasiparticle physics of the Bose polaron. Here, we compare the interferometric and spectroscopic timescales to the underlying dynamical regimes of the impurity dynamics and the polaron lifetime, highlighting the capability of the interferometric approach to clearly resolve polaron dynamics. In particular, interferometric measurements of the coherence amplitude at strong interactions reveal faster quantum dynamics at large repulsive interaction strengths than at unitarity. These observations are in excellent agreement with a short-time theoretical prediction including both the continuum and the attractive polaron branch. For longer times, qualitative agreement with a many-body theoretical prediction which includes both branches is obtained. Moreover, the polaron energy is extracted from interferometric measurements of the observed phase velocity in agreement with previous spectroscopic results from weak to strong attractive interactions. Finally, the phase evolution allows for the measurement of an energetic equilibration timescale, describing the initial approach of the phase velocity to the polaron energy. Theoretically, this is shown to lie within the regime of universal dynamics revealing a fast initial evolution towards the formation of polarons. Our results give a comprehensive picture of the many-body physics governing the Bose polaron and thus validates the quasiparticle framework for further studies., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We explore the interaction between two trapped ions mediated by a surrounding quantum degenerate Bose or Fermi gas. Using perturbation theory valid for weak atom-ion interaction, we show analytically that the interaction mediated by a Bose gas has a power-law behaviour for large distances whereas it has a Yukawa form for intermediate distances. For a Fermi gas, the mediated interaction is given by a power-law for large density and by a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida form for low density. For strong atom-ion interactions, we use a diagrammatic theory to demonstrate that the mediated interaction can be a significant addition to the bare Coulomb interaction between the ions, when an atom-ion bound state is close to threshold. Finally, we show that the induced interaction leads to substantial and observable shifts in the ion phonon frequencies., Comment: main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Rubidium dimers residing on the surface of He nanodroplets are doubly ionized by an intense fs laser pulse leading to fragmentation into a pair of $\mathrm{Rb^+}$ ions. We show that the kinetic energy of the $\mathrm{Rb^+}$ fragment ions can be used to identify dimers formed in either the X $^1\Sigma_{\mathrm{g}}^+$ ground state or in the lowest-lying triplet state, a $^3\Sigma_{\mathrm{u}}^+$. From the experiment, we estimate the abundance ratio of dimers in the a and X states as a function of the mean droplet size and find values between 4:1 and 5:1. Our technique applies generally to dimers and trimers of alkali atoms, here also demonstrated for $\mathrm{Li_2}$, $\mathrm{Na_2}$, and $\mathrm{K_2}$, and will enable fs time-resolved measurements of their rotational and vibrational dynamics, possibly with atomic structural resolution., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Microscopic dynamics reveal the origin of the bulk rheological response in complex fluids. In model systems particle motion can be tracked, but for industrially relevant samples this is often impossible. Here we adapt differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) to study flowing highly-concentrated samples without particle resolution. By combining an investigation of oscillatory flow, using a novel "echo-DDM" analysis, and steady shear, through flow-DDM, we characterise the yielding of a silicone oil emulsion on both the microscopic and bulk level. Through measuring the rate of shear-induced droplet rearrangements and the flow velocity, the transition from a solid-like to liquid-like state is shown to occur in two steps: with droplet mobilisation marking the limit of linear visco-elasticity, followed by the development of shear localisation and macroscopic yielding. Motile bacteria are known to accumulate at surfaces, eventually leading to changes in bacterial motility and bio-film formation. We use a novel two-colour, three-dimensional Lagrangian tracking technique, to follow simultaneously the body and the flagella of a wild-type ${\it Escherichia~coli}$. We observe long surface residence times and surface escape corresponding mostly to immediately antecedent tumbling. A motility model accounting for a large behavioural variability in run-time duration, reproduces all experimental findings and gives new insights into surface trapping efficiency.

Cell migration in confining physiological environments relies on the concerted dynamics of several cellular components, including protrusions, adhesions with the environment, and the cell nucleus. However, it remains poorly understood how the dynamic interplay of these components and the cell polarity determine the emergent migration behavior at the cellular scale. Here, we combine data-driven inference with a mechanistic bottom-up approach to develop a model for protrusion and polarity dynamics in confined cell migration, revealing how the cellular dynamics adapt to confining geometries. Specifically, we use experimental data of joint protrusion-nucleus migration trajectories of cells on confining micropatterns to systematically determine a mechanistic model linking the stochastic dynamics of cell polarity, protrusions, and nucleus. This model indicates that the cellular dynamics adapt to confining constrictions through a switch in the polarity dynamics from a negative to a positive, self-reinforcing feedback loop. Our model further reveals how this feedback loop leads to stereotypical cycles of protrusion-nucleus dynamics that drive the migration of the cell through constrictions. These cycles are disrupted upon perturbation of cytoskeletal components, indicating that the positive feedback is controlled by cellular migration mechanisms. Our data-driven theoretical approach therefore identifies polarity feedback adaptation as a key mechanism in confined cell migration.

William Cranch Bond, director of the Harvard College Observatory in mid-19th century, carried out detailed sunspot observations during the period 1847-1849. We highlight Bond was the observer with the highest daily number of sunspot groups observed in Solar Cycle 9 recording 18 groups on 26 December 1848 according to the current sunspot group database. However, we have detected significant mistakes in these counts due to the use of sunspot position tables instead of solar drawings. Therefore, we have revisited the sunspot observations made by Bond, establishing a new group counting. Our new counts of the sunspot groups from Bond's drawings indicate that solar activity was previously overestimated. Moreover, after this new counting, Bond would not be the astronomer who recorded the highest daily group number for Solar Cycle 9 but Schmidt with 16 groups on 14 February 1849. We have also indicated the new highest annual group numbers recorded by any observer for the period 1847-1849 in order to correct those values applied in the "brightest star" method, which is used as a rough indicator of the solar activity level. Furthermore, a comparison between Bond's sunspot records and the sunspot observations made by Schwabe and Wolf is shown. We conclude that the statistics of Wolf and Bond are similar regarding to the group count. Additionally, Schwabe was able to observe smaller groups than Bond.

An analysis of the sunspot observations made by Hevelius during 1642-1645 is presented. These records are the only systematic sunspot observations just before the Maunder Minimum. We have studied different phenomena meticulously recorded by Hevelius after translating the original Latin texts. We re-evaluate the observations of sunspot groups by Hevelius during this period and obtain an average value 7% greater than that calculated from his observations given in the current group database. Furthermore, the average of the active day fraction obtained in this work from Hevelius' records previous to the Maunder Minimum is significantly greater than the solar activity level obtained from Hevelius' sunspot observations made during the Maunder Minimum (70% vs. 30%). We also present the butterfly diagram obtained from the sunspot positions recorded by Hevelius for the period 1642-1645. It can be seen that no hemispheric asymmetry exists during this interval, in contrast with the Maunder Minimum. Hevelius noted a ~3-month period that appeared to lack sunspots in early 1645 that gave the first hint of the impending Maunder Minimum. Recent studies claim that the Maunder Minimum was not a grand minimum period speculating that astronomers of that time, due to the Aristotelian ideas, did not record all sunspots that they observed, producing thus an underestimation of the solar activity level. However, we show the good quality of the sunspot records made by Hevelius indicates that his reports of sunspots were true to the observations.

Particle size is a key variable in understanding the behaviour of the particulate products that underpin much of our modern lives. Typically obtained from suspensions at rest, measuring the particle size under flowing conditions would enable advances for in-line testing during manufacture and high-throughput testing during development. However, samples are often turbid, multiply scattering light and preventing the direct use of common sizing techniques. Differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) is a powerful technique for analysing video microscopy of such samples, measuring diffusion and hence particle size without the need to resolve individual particles while free of substantial user input. However, when applying DDM to a flowing sample, diffusive dynamics are rapidly dominated by flow effects, preventing particle sizing. Here, we develop "flow-DDM", a novel analysis scheme that combines optimised imaging conditions, a drift-velocity correction and modelling of the impact of flow. Flow-DDM allows a decoupling of flow from diffusive motion that facilitates successful particle size measurements at flow speeds an order of magnitude higher than for DDM. Remote control of experimental systems allows for improved collaboration between research groups as well as unique remote educational opportunities accessible by students and citizen scientists. Here, we describe an experiment for the production and investigation of ultracold quantum gases capable of asynchronous remote control by multiple remote users. This is enabled by a queuing system coupled to an interface that can be modified to suit the user, e.g. a gamified interface for use by the general public or a scripted interface for an expert. To demonstrate this, the laboratory was opened to remote experts and the general public. During the available time, remote users were given the task of optimising the production of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This work thus provides a stepping stone towards the exploration and realisation of more advanced physical models by remote experts, students and citizen scientists alike.

While photovoltaic (PV) systems are installed at an unprecedented rate, reliable information on an installation level remains scarce. As a result, automatically created PV registries are a timely contribution to optimize grid planning and operations. This paper demonstrates how aerial imagery and three-dimensional building data can be combined to create an address-level PV registry, specifying area, tilt, and orientation angles. We demonstrate the benefits of this approach for PV capacity estimation. In addition, this work presents, for the first time, a comparison between automated and officially-created PV registries. Quantum systems are typically characterized by the inherent fluctuation of their physical observables. Despite this fundamental importance, the investigation of the fluctuations in interacting quantum systems at finite temperature continues to pose considerable theoretical and experimental challenges. Here we report the characterization of atom number fluctuations in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. Technical fluctuations are mitigated through a combination of non-destructive detection and active stabilization of the cooling sequence. We observe fluctuations reduced by \SI{27}{\percent} below the canonical expectation for a non-interacting gas, revealing the microcanonical nature of our system. The peak fluctuations have near linear scaling with atom number $\Delta N_{0,\mathrm{p}}^2 \propto N^{1.134}$ in an experimentally accessible transition region outside the thermodynamic limit. We observe monopole oscillations in a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates, where the usually dominant mean-field interactions are canceled. In this case, the system is governed by the next-order Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction to the ground state energy, which describes the effect of quantum fluctuations. Experimentally such a LHY fluid is realized by controlling the atom numbers and interaction strengths in a $^{39}$K spin mixture confined in a spherical trap potential. We measure the monopole oscillation frequency as a function of the LHY interaction strength as proposed recently by J{\o}rgensen et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 173403 (2018)] and find excellent agreement with simulations of the complete experiment including the excitation procedure and inelastic losses. This confirms that the system and its collective behavior are initially dominated by LHY interactions. Moreover, the monopole oscillation frequency is found to be stable against variations of the involved scattering lengths in a broad region around the ideal values, confirming the stabilizing effect of the LHY interaction. These results pave the way for using the non-linearity provided by the LHY term in quantum simulation experiments and for investigations beyond the LHY regime., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures
