This study aimed at examining the relationships of self-regulated learning strategies with students' learning motivation and academic achievement in mathematics. The study employed a descriptive research design. The participants were 238 ninth grade students in the Sultanate of Oman. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire was used to assess the participants' use of self-regulated learning strategies and motivation. Academic achievement was reflected by the total score obtained in mathematics. Results revealed statistically positive relationships of self-regulated learning with intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, task value, control of learning beliefs, self-efficacy and academic achievement. Test anxiety was found to be negatively related to self-regulated learning. The study offers insights on how to develop effective instructional strategies to enhance students' self-regulated learning skills.

Abstract Background and aims The nonmotor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD) and their potential role in early diagnosis are recent debates. Herein, we aimed to investigate the association between depression and NMS of PD including sleep disorders, hyposexuality, hyposmia, constipation, and orthostatic hypotension. Methods A total of 93 PD patients with depression and 67 PD patients without depression were included in the study, and NMS were compared between the two groups. Furthermore, the possible associations between depression severity measured by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and NMS were investigated using linear regression or binary logistic regression models controlled for possible confounders. Eventually, we performed a subgroup analysis in each mild, moderate, and severe depression group. Abstract Four simple, specific, easy, precise and accurate spectrophotometric methods were developed for the first time to examine ciprofloxacin and metronidazole in combination, without having been separated beforehand by the developed methods. Ciprofloxacin and metronidazole were determined by utilizing advanced absorbance subtraction (AAS), spectrum subtraction, bivariate and ratio difference methods. Precision, repeatability, robustness, and accuracy were all determined to be within acceptable levels after each of these procedures underwent validation in accordance with ICH recommendations. Each method’s benefits and drawbacks are illustrated, and the proposed and reported methodologies were statistically compared.

Abstract Background Chemical castration of male animals is an alternative to surgical castration for inducing azoospermia, consequent sterility. Intra-testicular injection of zinc gluconate has been used for chemical castration in several animal species. However, its application to equine species, such as donkeys, has yet to be reported. This study aimed to evaluate the use of zinc gluconate for the chemical castration of male donkeys and to compare its effectiveness relative to routine surgical castration. For this purpose, investigations of serum testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone levels, testicular ultrasonographic echogenicity, and histopathological findings were performed. Methods Fourteen clinically healthy adult male donkeys were randomly and equally divided into two groups. The donkeys in group I (n = 7) underwent surgical castration. The donkeys in group II (n = 7) received intra-testicular zinc gluconate injections. The donkeys were kept under close clinical observation for 60 days. Abnormalities in donkey behavior and gross alterations in the external genitalia were recorded daily. Serum testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were measured 15 days before the start of the treatment and 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after treatment. The testicles of group II donkeys were evaluated ultrasonographically. At the end of the study, the testes were removed and histologically examined. Results Serum testosterone levels significantly declined compared to pre-castration levels in surgically castrated donkeys (group I), but donkeys exposed to chemical castration (group II) showed a non-significant reduction in testosterone levels. Donkeys in the surgical group had considerably lower serum AMH levels. In contrast, there was a non-significant (p > 0.05) increase in AMH levels in the chemical group compared with the pre-sterilization level. In addition, ultrasonographic examination revealed that the testicular echo-density had changed, as observed by a few scattered hyperechoic regions throughout the entire testis parenchyma. The histopathological investigation confirmed the presence of necrosis of the spermatogenic epithelium, increased thickness of the basement membrane of the seminiferous tubules, marked interstitial fibrosis, and shrinkage of the seminiferous tubules. Furthermore, syncytial giant cells were present in the lumen of seminiferous tubules and were associated with Sertoli cell vacuolation. Donkeys subjected to chemical castration (group II) had orchitis, as confirmed histopathologically. Conclusion Intra-testicular injection of zinc gluconate resulted in histopathological and ultrasonographic testicular changes in adult male donkeys, which may affect their reproductive potential. However, it did not significantly alter serum testosterone or AMH levels, indicating that it cannot be used as a substitute for surgical castration in male donkeys.

Abstract Background The arteriovenous fistula is the most effective vascular access option for hemodialysis patients. An important and largely unreported concern detected at follow-up is the complaints of tingling or numbness in the hands of those patients. Furthermore, the cutaneous silent period qualifies as a straightforward evaluation of small nerve fiber function. This study aims to evaluate the function of small-diameter nerve fibers in the hands of patients undergoing continuous hemodialysis (HD) on the side with the arteriovenous fistula (AVF) and on the contralateral side. Results A cross-sectional study of 40 randomly chosen patients with chronic kidney disease on regular hemodialysis three times weekly the cutaneous silent period (CSP) was recorded on the hand with and without AV fistula. The cutaneous silent period (CSP) CSP was elicited by electrical square pulse stimulation using standard bipolar electrodes. The average cutaneous silent period onset and end latencies demonstrated significant prolongation in the hemodialysis patient group (arteriovenous fistula and non-arteriovenous fistula) compared with the control group. Correlation between cutaneous silent period with hemodialysis duration and adequacy of hemodialysis (KT\V). There was a statistically negative correlation observed between cutaneous silent period onset latency on the arteriovenous side and a positive correlation with KT\V on non-arteriovenous fistula. side. Conclusions Hemodialysis patients recommended to undergo regular neurophysiological testing to check for small nerve fiber affection. In particular, measuring the cutaneous Silent period that provides a quick and noninvasive way to rule out small A-delta nerve malfunction. In addition, less nerve injury results from hemodialysis's increased efficiency.

Crop production is strongly impacted by soil nitrogen supply, which is regulated by soil micro-food webs consisting of nematodes, protists, fungi and bacteria. However, responses of soil micro-food webs to fertilization at the aggregate scale and their relationships with soil nitrogen supply and crop yield remain unclear. To address these knowledge gaps, we investigated soils subjected to typical fertilization treatments in a long-term field experiment, which included: no fertilizer control (CK); synthetic fertilizers (NPK); partial synthetic nitrogen replacement with pig slurry (OMNPK) or crop straw (RSDNPK) and incorporating biochar with synthetic fertilizers (BCNPK). The composition of different biological groups was changed significantly by fertilization, with bacteria under RSDNPK being more responsive than other groups. The co-occurrence network of the soil micro-food web had more edges in microaggregates than those in large and small macroaggregates due to the significantly higher nodal degree of bacteria and fungi. On average, 76 % of the topologically important (TI) taxa in the networks were bacteria. In modules where nematodes and protists were present, 8 %-100 % of them were attributed to TI taxa while the ratio for bacteria was 3 %-7 %. Specific assemblages of functionally important (FI) taxa covering all tested biological groups at the aggregate scale were positively associated with soil labile nitrogen, related enzymes and crop yield. Random forest regression further indicates the high importance of these FI taxa to crop yield. However, less than 20 % of them were attributed to TI taxa of the networks. In summary, distinct assemblages of taxa covering multiple trophic levels regulate network topology and soil nitrogen supply + crop yield, which provides insights for targeted manipulation of soil micro-food webs through knowledge-based fertilization to harness the biological potential of cropland soils.

Lithium is the gold standard therapy for Bipolar Disorder (BD) but its effectiveness differs widely between individuals. The molecular mechanisms underlying treatment response heterogeneity are not well understood, and personalized treatment in BD remains elusive. Genetic analyses of the lithium treatment response phenotype may generate novel molecular insights into lithium's therapeutic mechanisms and lead to testable hypotheses to improve BD management and outcomes. We used fixed effect meta-analysis techniques to develop meta-analytic polygenic risk scores (MET-PRS) from combinations of highly correlated psychiatric traits, namely schizophrenia (SCZ), major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD). We compared the effects of cross-disorder MET-PRS and single genetic trait PRS on lithium response. For the PRS analyses, we included clinical data on lithium treatment response and genetic information for n = 2283 BD cases from the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLi+Gen; www.ConLiGen.org ). Higher SCZ and MD PRSs were associated with poorer lithium treatment response whereas BD-PRS had no association with treatment outcome. The combined MET2-PRS comprising of SCZ and MD variants (MET2-PRS) and a model using SCZ and MD-PRS sequentially improved response prediction, compared to single-disorder PRS or to a combined score using all three traits (MET3-PRS). Patients in the highest decile for MET2-PRS loading had 2.5 times higher odds of being classified as poor responders than patients with the lowest decile MET2-PRS scores. An exploratory functional pathway analysis of top MET2-PRS variants was conducted. Findings may inform the development of future testing strategies for personalized lithium prescribing in BD.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the psychosocial effects and coping strategies of university students during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Between 30 May and 6 June 2020, an online cross-sectional survey was fulfilled by 612 university students. The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale, version 3, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Brief COPE scale were used. Results: Different degrees of depression, anxiety, and stress were reported by 74.5%, 47.1%, and 40.5% of the surveyed students, respectively. Dysfunctional coping strategies including venting, denial, and substance use had the lowest scores on Brief COPE while problem-focused coping strategies including planning and active coping strategies had the highest scores on Brief COPE. Conclusion: Undergraduate university students are very prone to experience psychosocial problems during the current pandemic. Educational institutions should work together with the authorities to promote measures to improve mental health and academic performance of their students.
