Gyrochronology has been demonstrated to work at least up to the age of the Sun for solar analogs. What comes later remains controversial, where periods for Kepler’s asteroseismic touchstone stars have been used to argue for a reduced braking efficiency at older ages. However, this effect should not affect K dwarfs (0.6-0.9 solar masses), which are even more problematic to age-date with isochrone methods than F and G dwarfs. The difficulty with calibrating K dwarfs gyrochronology is that few are known with published periods that have precise ages older than the Hyades or Praesepe (650 Myr). This is because asteroseismology is not effective for this class of stars and those located in the older clusters surveyed with Kepler (NGCs 6811 and 6819; Meibom et al. 2011, 2015) are too faint. Our K2 Survey of Ruprecht 147 remedies this by expanding the sample of 2.5 Gyr rotators from 0.85 solar masses from NGC 6819 down to 0.5 solar masses in R147. Our new sample shows tension with expectations from various empirical models (e.g., Barnes 2010, Mamajek Hillenbrand 2008, Angus et al. 2015), semi-physical models (e.g., van Saders et al. 2013, Matt et al. 2015), and the observed Praesepe period sequence projected forward in time to the age of R147, all of which predict periods for K dwarfs much longer than observed in the Ruprecht 147. Stellar ages are notoriously difficult to measure accurately for low-mass stars, severely limiting our ability to address questions ranging from the evolutionary state of exoplanets to the chemical history of the Galaxy. Gyrochronology, which uses stellar rotation as a proxy for age, is a promising solution to this quandary. Unfortunately, however, theoretical calibrations of the age-rotation relation have historically been hampered by the lack of rotational measurements for large numbers of low-mass stars with a wide range of well-known ages. We are still far from being able to describe fully the evolution of rotation for low-mass stars, or from being able to use rotation measurements to estimate accurately the ages of isolated field stars. In this talk, I first summarize recent ground-based and space-based work to characterize the rotational behavior of G, K, and M dwarfs in open clusters ranging in age from 125 Myr (the Pleiades) to 3 Gyr (Ruprecht 147), and then compare these data to each other and to models for stellar spin-down in order to appraise our current understanding of the age-rotation relation., Slides from contributed plenary talk, August 1, 2018

As the nearest open cluster to the Sun, the Hyades is an important benchmark for calibrating stellar properties such as rotation and magnetic activity. Its proximity, however, means that cluster members are scattered across a wide area of the sky; previous studies of rotation relied on wide-area surveys designed to discover transiting exoplanets. I will present rotation periods measured using K2 data of the Hyades, including the first rotation periods of less than 1 day for cluster members and for fully convective Hyads. Discrepancies between Hyades data and gyrochronology models imply that we still do not fully understand how magnetic fields affect stellar spin-down. I will discuss how we can use the Hyades and the co-eval Praesepe cluster to test theories of stellar magnetic fields.

Stellar rotation periods measured from single-age populations are critical for investigating how stellar angular momentum content evolves over time, how that evolution depends on mass, and how rotation influences the stellar dynamo and the magnetically heated chromosphere and corona. We report rotation periods for 40 late-K to mid-M star members of the nearby, rich, intermediate-age (~600 Myr) open cluster Praesepe. These rotation periods were derived from ~200 observations taken by the Palomar Transient Factory of four cluster fields from 2010 February to May. Our measurements indicate that Praesepe's mass-period relation transitions from a well-defined singular relation to a more scattered distribution of both fast and slow rotators at ~0.6 M ☉. The location of this transition is broadly consistent with expectations based on observations of younger clusters and the assumption that stellar spin-down is the dominant mechanism influencing angular momentum evolution at 600 Myr. However, a comparison to data recently published for the Hyades, assumed to be coeval to Praesepe, indicates that the divergence from a singular mass-period relation occurs at different characteristic masses, strengthening the finding that Praesepe is the younger of the two clusters. We also use previously published relations describing the evolution of rotation periods as a function of color and mass to evolve the sample of Praesepe periods in time. Comparing the resulting predictions to periods measured in M35 and NGC 2516 (~150 Myr) and for kinematically selected young and old field star populations suggests that stellar spin-down may progress more slowly than described by these relations.

We report on follow-up observations of candidate X-ray-bright, radio-quiet isolated neutron stars (INSs) identified from correlations of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 in Agüeros et al. We obtained Chandra X-ray Observatory exposures for 13 candidates in order to pinpoint the source of X-ray emission in optically blank RASS error circles. These observations eliminated 12 targets as good INS candidates. We discuss subsequent observations of the remaining candidate with XMM-Newton, the Gemini North Observatory, and the Apache Point Observatory. We identify this object as a likely extragalactic source with an unusually high log (f_X/f_opt) ~ 2.4. We also use an updated version of the population synthesis models of Popov et al. to estimate the number of RASS-detected INSs in the SDSS Data Release 7 footprint. We find that these models predict ~3-4 INSs in the 11,000 deg² imaged by SDSS, which is consistent with the number of known INSs that fall within the survey footprint. In addition, our analysis of the four new INS candidates identified in the SDSS footprint implies that they are unlikely to be confirmed as INSs; together, these results suggest that new INSs are not likely to be found from further correlations of the RASS and SDSS.

We measure the radial velocity curve of the eclipsing detached white dwarf binary NLTT 11748. The primary exhibits velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of 273 km s⁻¹ and an orbital period of 5.641 hr. We do not detect any spectral features from the secondary star or any spectral changes during the secondary eclipse. We use our composite spectrum to constrain the temperature and surface gravity of the primary to be T_eff = 8690 ± 140 K and log g = 6.54 ± 0.05, which correspond to a mass of 0.18 M ☉. For an inclination angle of 89.°9 derived from the eclipse modeling, the mass function requires a 0.76 M ☉ companion. The merger time for the system is 7.2 Gyr. However, due to the extreme mass ratio of 0.24, the binary will most likely create an AM CVn system instead of a merger.

Prior astronomy decadal surveys have been an effective tool for defining our science program, why it is necessary, when it should be accomplished, and how it will need to be done. But it has not to date included a determination of who will be needed to do it – how many graduate students, postdocs, instrument builders, software engineers, and faculty are required. The primary goal of this white paper is to advocate for a discussion of the astronomical employment picture in the current decadal survey. We present a current picture of astronomy employment, then consider how federal funding affects that employment. We then discuss how the current employment demographics could be changed to benefit the field. We finish with recommendations for data that the decadal survey should collect and a few suggestions to promote an effective and sustainable workforce.

SDSS J091709.55+463821.8 (hereafter J0917+4638) is the lowest surface gravity white dwarf (WD) currently known, with log g = 5.55 ± 0.05 (M ≈ 0.17 M ☉). Such low-mass white dwarfs (LMWDs) are believed to originate in binaries that evolve into WD/WD or WD/neutron star (NS) systems. An optical search for J0917+4638's companion showed that it must be a compact object with a mass ≥0.28 M ☉. Here we report on Green Bank Telescope 820 MHz and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of J0917+4638 intended to uncover a potential NS companion to the LMWD. No convincing pulsar signal is detected in our radio data. Our X-ray observation also failed to detect X-ray emission from J0917+4638's companion, while we would have detected any of the millisecond radio pulsars in 47 Tuc. We conclude that the companion is almost certainly another WD.

This paper describes the Sixth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. With this data release, the imaging of the northern Galactic cap is now complete. The survey contains images and parameters of roughly 287 million objects over 9583 deg², including scans over a large range of Galactic latitudes and longitudes. The survey also includes 1.27 million spectra of stars, galaxies, quasars, and blank sky (for sky subtraction) selected over 7425 deg². This release includes much more stellar spectroscopy than was available in previous data releases and also includes detailed estimates of stellar temperatures, gravities, and metallicities. The results of improved photometric calibration are now available, with uncertainties of roughly 1% in g, r, i, and z, and 2% in u, substantially better than the uncertainties in previous data releases. The spectra in this data release have improved wavelength and flux calibration, especially in the extreme blue and extreme red, leading to the qualitatively better determination of stellar types and radial velocities. The spectrophotometric fluxes are now tied to point-spread function magnitudes of stars rather than fiber magnitudes. This gives more robust results in the presence of seeing variations, but also implies a change in the spectrophotometric scale, which is now brighter by roughly 0.35 mag. Systematic errors in the velocity dispersions of galaxies have been fixed, and the results of two independent codes for determining spectral classifications and redshifts are made available. Additional spectral outputs are made available, including calibrated spectra from individual 15 minute exposures and the sky spectrum subtracted from each exposure. We also quantify a recently recognized underestimation of the brightnesses of galaxies of large angular extent due to poor sky subtraction; the bias can exceed 0.2 mag for galaxies brighter than r = 14 mag.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) are rich resources for studying stellar astrophysics and the structure and formation history of the Galaxy. As new surveys and instruments adopt similar filter sets, it is increasingly important to understand the properties of the ugrizJHK_s stellar locus, both to inform studies of "normal" main-sequence stars and enable robust searches for point sources with unusual colors. Using a sample of ~600,000 point sources detected by SDSS and 2MASS, we tabulate the position and width of the ugrizJHK_s stellar locus as a function of g - i color, and provide accurate polynomial fits. We map the Morgan-Keenan spectral type sequence to the median stellar locus by using synthetic photometry of spectral standards and by analyzing 3000 SDSS stellar spectra with a custom spectral typing pipeline, described in the Appendix to this paper. We develop an algorithm to calculate a point source's minimum separation from the stellar locus in a seven-dimensional color space, and use it to robustly identify objects with unusual colors, as well as spurious SDSS/2MASS matches. Analysis of a final catalog of 2117 color outliers identifies 370 white-dwarf/M dwarf (WDMD) pairs, 93 QSOs, and 90 M giant/carbon star candidates, and demonstrates that WDMD pairs and QSOs can be distinguished on the basis of their J - K_s and r - z colors. We also identify a group of objects with correlated offsets in the u - g versus g - r and g - r versus r - i color-color spaces, but subsequent follow-up is required to reveal the nature of these objects. Future applications of this algorithm to a matched SDSS-UKIDSS catalog may well identify additional classes of objects with unusual colors by probing new areas of color-magnitude space.

The 28 cataclysmic variables (CVs) found in 2005 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are presented with their coordinates, magnitudes, and spectra. Five of these systems are previously known CVs (HH Cnc, SX LMi, QZ Ser, AP CrB, and HS 1016+3412), and the rest are new discoveries. Additional spectroscopic, photometric, and/or polarimetric observations of 10 systems were carried out, resulting in estimates of the orbital periods for seven of the new binaries. The 23 new CVs include one eclipsing system, one new Polar, and five systems whose spectra clearly reveal atmospheric absorption lines from the underlying white dwarf.

We describe further results of a program aimed at yielding ~104 fully characterized optical identifications of ROSAT X-ray sources. Our program employs X-ray data from the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) and both optical imaging and spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). RASS/SDSS data from 5740 deg² of sky spectroscopically covered in SDSS Data Release 5 provide an expanded catalog of 7000 confirmed quasars and other active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that are probable RASS identifications. Again, in our expanded catalog the identifications as X-ray sources are statistically secure, with only a few percent of the SDSS AGNs likely to be randomly superposed on unrelated RASS X-ray sources. Most identifications continue to be quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies with 15 < m < 21 and 0.01 < z < 4, but the total sample size has grown to include very substantial numbers of even quite rare AGNs, e.g., it now includes several hundreds of candidate X-ray-emitting BL Lac objects and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. In addition to exploring rare subpopulations, such a large total sample may be useful when considering correlations between the X-ray and the optical and may also serve as a resource list from which to select the "best" object (e.g., X-ray-brightest AGN of a certain subclass at a preferred redshift or luminosity) for follow-up X-ray spectral or alternate detailed studies.

This paper identifies the cataclysmic variables that appear in spectra obtained in 2004 as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Spectra of 41 objects, including seven systems that were previously known (CC Cnc, DW Cnc, PQ Gem, AR UMa, AN UMa, RX J1131.3+4322, and UMa 6) and 34 new cataclysmic variables are presented. The positions and ugriz photometry of all 41 systems are given, as well as additional follow-up spectroscopic, photometric, and/or polarimetric observations of eight of the new systems. The new objects include three eclipsing systems, six with prominent He II emission, and six systems that show the underlying white dwarf.

This paper describes the Third Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This release, containing data taken up through 2003 June, includes imaging data in five bands over 5282 deg², photometric and astrometric catalogs of the 141 million objects detected in these imaging data, and spectra of 528,640 objects selected over 4188 deg². The pipelines analyzing both images and spectroscopy are unchanged from those used in our Second Data Release.

We discuss the ultraviolet, optical, and infrared properties of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) sources detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) as part of its All-sky Imaging Survey Early Release Observations. Virtually all (>99%) the GALEX sources in the overlap region are detected by SDSS; those without an SDSS counterpart within our 6'' search radius are mostly unflagged GALEX artifacts. GALEX sources represent ~2.5% of all SDSS sources within these fields, and about half are optically unresolved. Most unresolved GALEX-SDSS sources are bright (r < 18 mag), blue, turnoff, thick-disk stars and are typically detected only in the GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) band. The remaining unresolved sources include low-redshift quasars (z < 2.2), white dwarfs, and white dwarf–M dwarf pairs, and these dominate the optically unresolved sources detected in both GALEX bands. Almost all the resolved SDSS sources detected by GALEX are fainter than the SDSS main spectroscopic limit. (Conversely, of the SDSS galaxies in the main spectroscopic sample, about 40% are detected in at least one GALEX band.) These sources have colors consistent with those of blue (spiral) galaxies (u - r < 2.2), and most are detected in both GALEX bands. Measurements of their UV colors allow much more accurate and robust estimates of star formation history than are possible using only SDSS data. Indeed, galaxies with the most recent (lesssim20 Myr) star formation can be robustly selected from the GALEX data by requiring that they be brighter in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) than in the NUV band. However, older starburst galaxies have UV colors similar to those of active galactic nuclei and thus cannot be selected unambiguously on the basis of GALEX fluxes alone. Additional information, such as spatially resolved FUV emission, optical morphology, or X-ray and radio data, is needed before blue GALEX colors can be unambiguously interpreted as a sign of recent star formation. With the aid of Two Micron All Sky Survey data, we construct and discuss median 10-band UV through infrared spectral energy distributions for turnoff stars, hot white dwarfs, low-redshift quasars, and spiral and elliptical galaxies. We point out the high degree of correlation between the UV color and the contribution of the UV flux to the UV through infrared flux of galaxies detected by GALEX; for example, this correlation can be used to predict the SDSS z-band measurement, using only two GALEX fluxes, with a scatter of only 0.7 mag.
