Abstract

The Large Volume Detector, hosted in the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, is triggered by atmospheric muons at a rate of ∼0.1 Hz. The data collected over almost a quarter of a century are used to study the muon intensity underground. The 5×107 muon series, the longest ever exploited by an underground instrument, allows for the accurate long-term monitoring of the muon intensity underground. This is relevant as a study of the background in the Gran Sasso Laboratory, which hosts a variety of long-duration, low-background detectors. We describe the procedure to select muon-like events as well as the method used to compute the exposure. We report the value of the average muon flux measured from 1994 to 2017: Iμ0=3.35±0.0005stat±0.03sys×10-4 m-2 s-1. We show that the intensity is modulated around this average value due to temperature variations in the stratosphere. We quantify such a correlation by using temperature data from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts: we find an effective temperature coefficient αT=0.94±0.01stat±0.01sys, in agreement with other measurements at the same depth. We scrutinize the spectral content of the time series of the muon intensity by means of the Lomb-Scargle analysis. This yields the evidence of a 1-year periodicity, as well as the indication of others, both shorter and longer, suggesting that the series is not a pure sinusoidal wave. Consequently, and for the first time, we characterize the observed modulation in terms of amplitude and position of the maximum and minimum on a year-by-year basis.

Abstract

An analysis is performed for muons passing through the Large Volume Detector (LVD) horizontally over 15 years of operation. Horizontal muons pass through the ground at around 5 km w.e. with a threshold energy of 4.7 TeV. The energy characteristics of the LVD allow the detection of neutrons produced by muons in the detector's material. The great volume of statistics ensures high accuracy in determining seasonal variations in the number of neutrons. The temporal distributions of pulses with energy releases of 1 to 12 MeV are used in a time interval of 150–650 μs after a muon crosses the setup to find the specific number of neutrons. Abstract

The charge ratio ${k \equiv \mu^+/\mu^-}$ for atmospheric muons has been measured using Large Volume Detector (LVD) in the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy (minimal depth is 3000 m w.e.). To reach this depth muons should have the energy at the sea level greater than 1.3 TeV. The muon charge ratio was defined using the number of the decays of stopping positive muons in the LVD iron structure and the decays of positive and negative muons in scintillator. We have obtained the value of the muon charge ratio ${k}$ ${= 1.26 \pm 0.04(stat) \pm 0.11(sys)}$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Version submitted for publication

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a project in order to verify -without the need of knowing the distance CERN-Gran Sasso- the discovery made by the OPERA Collaboration concerning the speed of the CERN neutrinos. The project consists of two parts. A simple one and a less simple one. Both have the great advantage of being totally independent of the knowledge of the distance, ≃ 732 km, between the two Labs, CERN and LNGS, where the neutrinos are produced and detected, respectively. The "simple" version of this project is based on the high-energy horizontal cosmic muons, which traverse LVD and OPERA detectors, thus allowing to cross-calibrate the timing systems of both experiments in a way which is totally independent of the TOF measurements of CNGS. This component of the project is being studied in collaboration with the OPERA group, as the time stabilities of both experiments are needed. In fact it is since a long time that the two groups are engaged with this problem. In this paper we will present and discuss the "less simple" part which allows to establish, at the highest possible level of accuracy, if (v > c) effects really exist.

Abstract

Collection of light in a counter with mirror reflection from relief (nonflat) surfaces and with a high transparency of the liquid scintillator was investigated. Based on results of measurements and simulation of light collection, the dependence of light collection coefficient K on the relief of reflecting surfaces and the scintillator transparency was obtained using the Monte Carlo method. The light collection coefficient was K=(30.9+1.1)×10s-3, and the resolution of the distribution function for the K value over the counter volume was η ≈12%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Subchondral remodeling is an important pathogenic mechanism in primary gonarthrosis progress. The role of altered metabolism of osseous tissue in early signs of articular pathology remains vague, and the informative value of biochemical markers is discussible. Our research involved 103 patients (64 women and 39 men) with 0-I gonarthrosis stages and 103 healthy individuals (72 women and 28 men) of 36 to 50 years old. We measured osteocalcin, pyridinoline, type I collagen telopeptides, vitamin B metabolites, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein concentrations, determined the activity of bone alkaline phosphatase, and diagnostic significance of the markers with the ROC curve. We found the increase (p<0.0001) in bone alkaline phosphatase, type I collagen telopeptides, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein concentrations as well as osteocalcin (p<0.0002) in 0-I gonarthrosis stages as compared to the controls. The ROC curve featured 98.1 and 79.6 percent sensitivity and specificity of type I collagen telopeptides; 80.6 and 52.4 percent of osteocalcin; 99.0 and 78.6 percent of pyridinoline, respectively. These findings suggest the significant role of subchondral remodeling in the pathogenesis of early gonarthrosis stages.
