Gas hydrate blockage is a major issue that the production and transportation processes in the oil/gas industry faces. The formation of gas hydrates in pipelines results in significant financial losses and serious safety risks. To tackle the flow assurance issues caused by gas hydrate formation in the pipelines, some physical methods and chemical inhibitors are applied by the oil/gas industry. The physical techniques involve subjecting the gas hydrates to thermal heating and depressurization. The alternative method, on the other hand, relies on injecting chemical inhibitors into the pipelines, which affects gas hydrate formation. Chemical inhibitors are classified into high dosage hydrate inhibitors (thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors (THI)) and low dosage hydrate inhibitors (kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHI) and anti-agglomerates (AAs)). Each chemical inhibitor affects the gas hydrate from a different perspective. The use of physical techniques (thermal heating and depressurization) to inhibit hydrate formation is studied briefly in this review paper. Furthermore, the application of various THIs (alcohols and electrolytes), KHIs (polymeric compounds), and dual function hydrate inhibitors (amino acids, ionic liquids, and nanoparticles) are discussed thoroughly in this study. This review paper aims to provide a complete and comprehensive outlook on the fundamental principles of gas hydrates, and the recent mitigation techniques used by the oil/gas industry to tackle the gas hydrate formation issue. Activated carbons prepared from walnut and poplar woods are used as economical adsorbents for the rapid removal and fast adsorption of Acid Red 18 dye from the aqueous solutions; the kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamics studies of the process were well investigated and elucidated. The adsorption phenomenon may be possibly attributed to the formation of various binding bonds between the activated carbons, developed from the poplar and walnut woods, surface and the dye molecules; adsorption may firstly take place on the external surface of the developed adsorbent i.e. activated carbon developed from the walnut and poplar wood particles, where the attached functional groups play a crucial role in the rapid removal and fast adsorption. Secondly, adsorption may take place on the entire surface, which leads to a uniform distribution of adsorbed Acid Red 18 molecules onto the developed adsorbents. Forces that are responsible for the main adsorption mechanism are π–π attraction between Acid Red 18 dye molecules and the C C bonds of the developed adsorbents. Consequently, at least three types of adsorption sites might occur on the adsorbent surface; these are basal plane, edge plane and micropores. Neither pseudo-first order kinetic model nor pseudo-second order kinetic model was able to describe the adsorption process of AR18 molecules onto the activated carbon from poplar wood. Pesticides are used in agriculture to protect crops from pathogens, insects, fungi and weeds, but the release of pesticides into surface/groundwater by agriculture runoff and rain has raised serious concerns not only for the environment but also for human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of surface properties on the performance of seven distinct membrane types utilized in nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO) processes in eliminating multiple pesticides from spiked water. Out of the membranes tested, two are self-fabricated RO membranes while the rest are commercially available membranes. Our results revealed that the self-fabricated RO membranes performed better than other commercial membranes (e.g., SW30XLE, NF270, Duracid and FO) in rejecting the targeted pesticides by achieving at least 99% rejections regardless of the size of pesticides and their log K ow value. Despite the marginally lower water flux exhibited by the self-fabricated membrane compared to the commercial BW30 membrane, its exceptional ability to reject both mono- and divalent salts renders it more apt for treating water sources containing not only pesticides but also various dissolved ions. The enhanced performance of the self-fabricated RO membrane is mainly attributed to the presence of a hydrophilic interlayer (between the polyamide layer and substrate) and the incorporation of hydrophilic nanosheets in tuning its surface characteristics. The findings of the work provide insight into the importance of membrane surface modification for the application of not only the desalination process but also for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern. There is no doubt that infectious diseases present global impact on the economy, society, health, mental state, and even political aspects, causing a long-lasting dent, and the situation will surely worsen if and when the viral spread becomes out of control, as seen during the still ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite the considerable achievements made in viral prevention and treatment, there are still significant challenges that can be overcome through careful understanding of the viral mechanism of action to establish common ground for innovating new preventative and treatment strategies. Viruses can be regarded as devil nanomachines, and one innovative approach to face and stop the spread of viral infections is the development of nanoparticles that can act similar to them as drug/vaccine carriers. Moreover, we can use the properties that different viruses have in designing nanoparticles that reassemble the virus conformational structures but that do not present the detrimental threats to human health that native viruses possess. This review discusses the current preventative strategies (i.e., vaccination) used in facing viral infections and the associated limitations, highlighting the importance of innovating new approaches to face viral infectious diseases and discussing the current nanoapplications in vaccine development and the challenges that still face the nanovaccine field. In this work, nine photocatalysts were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, surface area measurements based on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller theory, and scanning electron microscopy. The tested materials (BaBiO3, Bi2WO6, SrTiO3, KNbO3, NaNbO3, Sr4Nb2O9, YInO3, CaIn2O4, and YFeO3) showed great potential for use as photocatalysts in the efficient reduction of CO2 into a renewable hydrocarbon fuel as well as in water splitting. Our results showed that among the nine tested photocatalysts, three could generate CH4. In particular, it was observed that KNbO3, as a result of its high surface area and the suitable band gap, showed the highest CH4 generation, (86.842 ppm g−1 h−1). Some of the tested photocatalysts could generate H2 and O2 at a very promising rate; Sr4Nb2O9 and NaNbO3 were the best two photocatalysts, with an average O2 production rate of 69.476 ppm g−1 h−1 and 57.928 ppm g−1 h−1, respectively. Further, NaNbO3 showed the highest H2 production average with a rate of 220.128 ppm g−1 h−1. Bacteria play a variety of roles in the environment. They maintain the balance in the ecosystem and provide different ecosystem services such as in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, biodegradation of toxic pollutants, and others. Therefore, isolation and identification of different environmental bacteria are important to most environmental research. Due to the high cost and time associated with the conventional molecular techniques, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has gained considerable attention for routine identification of bacteria. This review aims to provide an overview of the application of MALDI-TOF MS in various environmental studies through bibliometric analysis and literature review. The bibliometric analysis helped to understand the time-variable application of MALDI-TOF MS in various environmental studies. The categorical literature review covers various environmental studies comprising areas like ecology, food microbiology, environmental biotechnology, agriculture, and plant sciences, which show the application of the technique for identification and characterization of pollutant-degrading, plant-associated, disease-causing, soil-beneficial, and other environmental bacteria. A simple temperature-assisted solution interaction technique was used to functionalize and reduce graphene oxide (GO) using tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) with less chemicals, low temperature, and without using other reducing agents. GO nanosheets, produced using a modified Hummers' method, were functionalized using two different GO:TEPA ratios (1:5 and 1:10). The reduction of GO was evaluated and confirmed by different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The FTIR and XPS spectra revealed that most of the oxygenated groups of GO were reduced. The emergence of amide groups in the XPS survey of the rGO-TEPA samples confirmed the successful reaction of TEPA with the carboxyl groups on the edges of GO. The replacement of the oxygenated groups increased the carbon/oxygen (C/O) ratio of GO by approximately 60%, suggesting a good reduction degree. It was found that the I2D/ID+D′ ratio and the relative intensity of the D″ band clearly increased after the reduction reaction, suggesting that these bands are good estimators for the reduction degree of GO. The morphological structure of GO was also affected by the reaction with TEPA, which was confirmed by SEM and TEM images. The TEM images showed that the transparent GO sheets became denser and opaque after functionalization with TEPA, indicating an increase in the stacking level of the GO sheets. This was further confirmed by the XRD analysis, which showed a clear decrease in the d-spacing, caused by the removal of oxygenated groups during the reduction reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Not long ago, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) came into view as a revolutionary class of materials, propelling advancements in water remediation and electrochemical technology. This comprehensive review explores the cutting-edge developments in CQDs-based materials and their applications, addressing critical challenges in water treatment and electrochemical processes. Synthesized as ultra-tiny, dispersed particles with dimensions less than 10 nm, CQDs exhibit remarkable optical properties, including adjustable fluorescence emission across various colors. With a surge in published scientific articles, CQDs have garnered significant attention, offering potential solutions in heavy metal sensing, remediation, and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). The review highlights the high sensitivity of CQDs as fluorescent sensors, detecting contaminants in water with limits of detection down to femtomolar concentrations. Moreover, CQDs demonstrate excellent adsorptive capabilities for heavy metal removal, surpassing traditional adsorbents in terms of removal efficiency. Furthermore, CQDs serve as promising electrocatalysts, enhancing reaction kinetics and enabling efficient water splitting for clean energy generation. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the importance of machine learning in advancing CQDs-based materials, supported by case studies and examples that illustrate how machine learning techniques optimize CQDs synthesis, enhance their properties, and broaden their applications. However, challenges remain in the precise synthesis of CQDs, scalability of production processes, and understanding the interactions between CQDs and pollutants. To address the problem of ever-increasing oily wastewater management, due to its directional liquid transport property, membranes with asymmetric wettability can be effectively used for emulsion separation. This study reports the synthesis of electrospun polymer–clay nanocomposite nanofibers, using co-polyamide polymer (COPA) and halloysite nanotubes (HA) as filler. The influence of clay content on the morphological, thermal and dielectric properties of the polymer composite nanofiber was investigated comprehensively to address the material characteristics of the developed system. The surface structure analysis and contact angle measurements of the electrospun composite nanofibers confirms the change in surface roughness and wettability when the fillers are added to the polymer. The porosity of the composite electrospun nanofiber membrane was found to be 85% with an oil adsorption capacity of 97% and water permeability of 6265 L/m2 h. Furthermore, the asymmetric wettability-driven oil/water emulsion separation abilities of the as-synthesized membranes shows that the separation efficiency of the composite fiber membrane is 10% improved compared to that of the neat fiber membrane, with improved separation time. Abstract: A simple and rapid analytical method for the determination of trace levels of five sulphonated and azo sulphonated reactive dyes: Cibacron Reactive Blue 2 (C-Blue, trisulphonated dye), Cibacron Reactive Red 4 (C-Red, tetrasulphonated azo dye), Cibacron Reactive Yellow 2 (C-Yellow, trisulphonated azo dye), Levafix Brilliant Red E-4BA (L-Red, trisulphonated dye), and Levafix Brilliant Blue E-4BA (L-Blue, disulphonated dye) in water is presented. Initially, the dyes were preconcentrated from 250ml of water samples with solid-phase extraction using natural zeolite sample previously modified with a microemulsion. The modified zeolite exhibited an excellent extraction for the dyes from solution. The parameters that influence quantitative recovery of reactive dyes like amount of extractant, volume of dye solution, pH, ionic strength, and extraction–elution flow rate were varied and optimized. After elution of the adsorbed dyes, the concentration of dyes was determined spectrophotometrically with the aid of principle component regression (PCR) method without separation of dyes. The results obtained from PCR method were comparable to those obtained from HPLC method confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method. With the aid of SPE by M-zeolite, the concentration of dyes could be reproducibly detected over the range 25–200ppb for C-Yellow and L-Blue and from 50 to 250ppb for C-Blue, C-Red, and L-Red. The multivariate detection limits of dyes were found to be 15ppb for C-Yellow and L-Blue and 25ppb for C-Blue, C-Red, and L-Red dyes. The proposed chemometric method gave recoveries from 85.4 to 115.3% and R.S.D. from 1.0 to 14.5% for determination of the five dyes without any prior separation for solutes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper, novel composite materials from modified roasted date pits using ferrocyanides were developed and investigated for the recovery of lithium ions (Li+) from seawater reverse osmosis (RO) brine. Two composite materials were prepared from roasted date pits (RDP) as supporting material, namely potassium copper hexacyanoferrate-date pits composite (RDP-FC-Cu), and potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate-date pits composite (RDP-FC-Ni). The physiochemical characterization of the RO brine revealed that it contained a variety of metals and salts such as strontium, zinc, lithium, and sodium chlorides. RDP-FC-Cu and RDP-FC-Ni exhibited enhanced chemical and physical characteristics than RDP. The optimum pH, which attained the highest adsorption removal (%) for all adsorbents, was at pH 6. In addition, the highest adsorption capacities for the adsorbents were observed at the initial lithium concentration of 100 mg/L. The BET surface area analysis confirmed the increase in the total surface area of the prepared composites from 2.518 m2/g for RDP to 4.758 m2/g for RDP-FC-Cu and 5.262 m2/g for RDP-FC-Ni. A strong sharp infrared peak appeared for the RDP-FC-Cu and RDP-FC-Ni at 2078 cm−1. This peak corresponds to the C≡N bond, which indicates the presence of potassium hexacyanoferrate, K4[Fe(CN)6]. The adsorption removal of lithium at a variety of pH ranges was the highest for RDP-FC-Cu followed by RDP-FC-Ni and RDP. The continuous increase in the adsorption capacity for lithium with increasing initial lithium concentrations was also observed. This could be mainly attributed to enhance and increased lithium mass transfer onto the available adsorption active sites on the adsorbents' surface. The differences in the adsorption in terms of percent adsorption removal were clear and significant between the three adsorbents (P value < 0.05). All adsorbents in the study showed a high lithium desorption percentage as high as 99%. Gas-to-liquid (GTL) sludge is a specific wastewater treatment by-product, which is generated during the industrial process of natural gas conversion to transportation fuels. This least studied sludge is pathogen-free and rich in organic carbon and plant nutrients. Therefore, it can be reused for soil enhancement as a sustainable management strategy to mitigate landfill gas emissions. In this field study, we compared the performance of soil treatments with GTL sludge to the more conventional chemical fertilizers and cow manure compost for the cultivation of cotton under hyperarid conditions. After a complete growing season, GTL sludge application resulted in the enhancement of soil properties and plant growth compared to conventional inputs. As such, there was a significant dose-dependent increase of soil organic matter (4.01% and 4.54%), phosphorus (534 and 1090 mg kg−1), and cumulative lint yield (4.68 and 5.67 t ha−1) for GTL sludge application rates of 1.5% and 3%, respectively. The produced fiber quality was adequate for an upland cotton variety (Gossypium hirsutum var. MAY 344) and appeared more dependent on the prevailing climate conditions than soil treatments. On the other hand, the adverse effects generally related to industrial sludge reuse were not significant and did not affect the designed agro-environmental system. Accordingly, plants grown on GTL sludge-amended soils showed lower antioxidant activity despite significant salinity increase. In addition, the concentrations of detected heavy metals in soil were within the standards' limits, which did not pose environmental issues under the described experimental conditions. Leachate analysis revealed no risks for groundwater contamination with phytotoxic metals, which were mostly retained by the soil matrix. Therefore, recycling GTL sludge as an organic amendment can be a sustainable solution to improve soil quality and lower carbon footprint. To reduce any environmental concerns, an application rate of 1.5% could be provisionally recommended since a two-fold increase in sludge dose did not result in a significant yield improvement. High-oxidation-degree graphene oxide particles were synthesized using a modified Hummers' method. Six different types of particles were synthesized by varying the operating conditions, including the temperature, the reactant ratios, and the oxidation time. The oxidation degree, represented by the oxygen content, and the atomic oxygen/carbon (O/C) ratio were determined using CHNSO elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-universal attenuated total reflectance sensor (FTIR-UATR) and Raman spectroscopy. The structural morphology of graphene oxide was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermal stability of the particles was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The SEM images showed that the prepared GO samples had different graphitic layer structures. The TEM images showed different stacking levels and transparency of GO flakes caused by the difference in oxidation level. The oxygen content and O/C ratios ranged between 34.7 and 50.0 wt% and 0.43 and 0.8, respectively. The highest oxygen content and O/C ratio were found to be 50 wt% and 0.8, respectively, for GO prepared at 95 °C with a 1-hr reaction time (GO2-a). A quantitative analysis on the FTIR-UATR spectra was performed and was in reasonable agreement with the CHNSO analysis results. The Raman spectra showed two characteristic bands (D and G) with different relative intensities, as characterized by the I D /I G ratio, suggesting that the prepared samples had different crystallite sizes and defects. The crystallite size (L a) of the prepared GO particles was estimated using the Tuinstra-Koenig model and were ranging between 9 and 24 nm. The TGA results were correlated with the elemental analysis results and showed a clear dependence of the weight loss on the GO elemental compositions. Because of the high production of oil and gas in Qatar, the likelihood of oil spill occurrence is most probably susceptible to happen. Contaminated soil treatment is very expensive. Cost effective mechanisms are investigated to treat this threatening issue. For that reason, bioremediation and biotechnology tools are introduced to help accelerate and remove the pollution caused by the contamination process. This paper demonstrated the importance of optimising the treatment conditions to the indigenous bacterial strain to obtain the highest biodegradation efficiency rates. The usage of biopile system technology was used with biostimulation and bioaugmentation processes. The indigenous Bacillus sonorensis (B. sonorensis) D1 bacterium played a crucial role in the biodegradation process when introduced to optimized conditions; carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus (C/N/P) (100/10/1), temperature (37 °C), surfactant tween 80 (0.12% (v/w)), and moisture (10%). Gas chromatography (mass spectrometry/flame ionization detector) (GC- (MS/FID)), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and colony-forming unit (CFU) analyses were performed. The diesel range organics (DRO) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) removal (%) of the weathered oil contaminated soil reached, after 160 days, 39.2% and 32.4% simultaneously when ammonium nitrate was used as a nitrogen source. This study investigates the mercury (Hg) levels distribution in fish and fish products and their relationships with fish types, weights, protein, and lipid contents in Qatar. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to analyze the influence of lipids and protein content on Hg accumulation in the fish tissues. Additionally, the impact of Hg concentration and fish consumption on the estimated weekly intake (EWI). The PCA results showed that Hg contamination levels are primarily affected by protein-lipid content in predatory species. The results showed that high lipid content reflected lower Hg levels and that high Hg levels in fish with high lipid content indicated a polluted environment. The finding of the PCA of EWI, consumption, and Mercury concentration indicate that EWI is highly correlated to Mercury concentration except in the case of low Mercury concentration. Phenol is a priority pollutant that presents a significant threat to human health and natural systems when discharged directly into the environment. Consequently, numerous technologies have been used and developed to eliminate phenol from wastewater streams. These technologies can be categorized into physical, chemical, and biological methods. While conventional treatment methods are highly efficient in phenol removal; some of these techniques are not environmentally friendly and others are expensive. Therefore, sustainable, and green technologies are being employed and taken into consideration in the treatment of phenol wastewater due to their effectiveness, affordability, and environmental compatibility. This review aims to highlight efficient green physiochemical and biological methods of water treatment and demonstrate the mechanisms of phenol removal in these technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the use of low-cost adsorbents prepared from industrial and agricultural wastes for the efficient removal of phenol from wastewater as adsorption processes show the highest cost-effectiveness among all the treatment technologies. Plastics possess diverse functional properties that have made them extremely desirable. However, due to poor waste management practices, large quantities eventually end up in the oceans where their degradation begins. Hence, it is imperative to understand and further investigate the dynamics of this process. Currently, most relevant studies have been carried out under benign and/or controlled weather conditions. This study investigates the natural degradation of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in more extreme environments. Simulated and real marine conditions, both in the laboratory (indoors) and outdoors were applied for a duration of 140 days and results were assessed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis. SEM micrographs revealed variations in the morphologies of both plastic types. Degradation signs were shown in both plastic types, under all conditions. Findings indicated that microplastics (MPs) degraded faster than macroplastics, with PP MPs having higher weight loss (49%) than PET MPs (1%) when exposed to outdoor marine conditions. Additionally, the degradation rates of MPs-PP were higher than MPs-PET for outdoor and indoor treatments, with 1.07 × 10−6 g/d and 4.41 × 10−7 g/d, respectively. In this work, a simple procedure of melamine determination in dairy products is reported. This is based first on melamine extraction from dairy products by 1% acetic acid, sonication, centrifugation and filtration by 0.45 µm filter. The proposed method has a low detection limit (0.50 mg kg−1), high accuracy (%recovery 98.9%), high precision (%RSD range 1.6-2.5%), high calibration sensitivity (19,335 (mg l−1)−1), and a wide dynamic range (1.0-50.0 mg l−1). Melamine was accurately quantified in spiked powdered milk, infant powder milk, full-fat liquid milk, fat-free liquid milk, local yoghurt, and local soft cheese (spiking levels 0.5, 50, and 1000 mg kg−1). The samples have variable amounts of fat (0-29%) and protein (3-23%) indicating the wide applicability of the proposed method. The %recoveries with %RSD were 78.2-103.6(2.5), 92.7-98.8(4.7), 79.3-101.5(3.8), 86.3-101.0(2.6), 78.0-89.2 (8.3), and 91.8-103.8(3.2) for soft cheese, yoghurt, powdered milk, infant powder, full-fat liquid milk, fat-free liquid milk, respectively. Practical Applications A simple and accurate analytical method was proposed for quick melamine detection and quantification in milk and dairy products having variable amounts of fat (0-29%) and protein (3-23%) with minimal sample clean up. The method is mainly based on melamine extraction by 1% acetic acid, sonication, centrifugation for 4.0 min, and filtration by 0.45 μm cellulose filter. The method could detect melamine down to 0.50 mg kg−1 with acceptable accuracy and precision (2.5 mg kg−1 is the upper limit of melamine in milk and dairy products). The aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of the adsorption process for the removal of organophosphorus pesticide malathion 57% from water by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The impact of various experimental conditions such as pH, quantity of adsorbent, concentration of pesticides, contact time and temperature was studied and optimized for the maximum removal of malathion. Unlike conventional optimization, a limited number of experiments (26 steps) were performed in a cost-effective manner for different independent variables such as MWCNTs concentration (0.1–0.5 g/L), the malathion (57%) concentration (6 mg/L and 10 mg/L), contact time (2–30 min) and pH (neutral range). Based on the experimental data obtained in a lab-scale batch study, a three-factor response surface modeling (RSM) approach was implemented in order to optimize the conditions for maximum removal of malathion, and compare experimental results with standardized malathion samples. The optimized conditions to achieve the maximum removal of malathion (100%) were determined to be a malathion concentration of 6 mg/L, an initial MWCNTs concentration of 0.5 g/L, and a contact time of 30 min. Findings of this study clearly indicated that 100% of the malathion could be cost-effectively removed by MWCNTs in conditions predicted by the proposed optimization methodology. In this study, three types of adsorbents were used to remove and recover strontium ions (Sr2+) from aqueous and brine solution of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO), namely roasted date pits (RDP) and RDP modified using copper and nickel salts of potassium hexacyanoferrates to obtain RDP–FC–Cu, and RDP–FC–Ni, respectively. Additionally, the influence of various parameters, including pH, temperature, initial concentration, and co-existing ions was also evaluated. The results revealed that pH 10 was the optimum pH in which the maximum Sr2+ ions were adsorbed. Additionally, all adsorbents had a high adsorption capacity (99.9 mg/g) for removing Sr2+ ions at the highest concentration (100 mg/L) and a temperature of 45 °C was found to be the optimum temperature. A scanning electron microscopy for the adsorbents before and after the adsorption of strontium showed the remarkable pore filling onto the active sites of all adsorbents. The thermodynamics parameter demonstrated that the adsorption occurred in an endothermic environment, and that, the reaction was spontaneous, and favorable at all the temperatures investigated. According to isotherm studies, the Langmuir model was the best-fit isotherm model; indicating that strontium adsorption involved the formation of monolayers and multilayers at higher temperatures (45 °C). Furthermore, high desorption percentages (above 90%) were achieved for all the adsorbents when an HCl concentration of 0.5 M was used. This showed the high reusability of the adsorbents. Lastly, the adsorption of strontium from the SWRO brine containing a number of metal ions was extremely sufficient as all the adsorbents were efficient to adsorb a high amount of Sr2+ despite the presence of other competing ions. Abstract: Unlike coal fly ash, fly ash of heavy fuel oil has received much less attention in the literature. In this work, detailed physicochemical characterization of heavy fuel oil fly ash (FA) is provided. The ash has a carbonaceous matrix and contains V, Ni, Zn, Cr, Cu, and Pb with variable amounts. V was the most abundant heavy metal with enrichment factor of 277 in the FA. The presence of V in the FA is attributed to the formation of Mg3V2O8 oxides at high combustion temperature as confirmed by XRD. Particle size distribution showed that the mean particle diameter of the FA was 70.5μm. Extraction recovery up to 85% of metals was achieved using 1.0M HNO3 and at room temperature. Standard metal-leaching tests confirmed that the elution of the toxic metals and the level of eluted Zn were much higher than the regulated value for the solid residues. Five stable geopolymers GPs containing 41.7wt.% FA were prepared. All GPs showed high compressive strength and low water absorption which support their application as lightweight construction composites. Most importantly, adding FA to GP had significantly reduced metal migration into the environment as confirmed by the synthetic precipitation leaching procedure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The study aims to prepare a novel low-cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent by using date pits (DP) impregnated with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and ionic liquid (IL), named IL-CNC@DP. The batch adsorption of lithium onto IL-CNC@DP and DP were studied at different pH values, initial lithium concentrations, and temperatures. The thermodynamics constants of the adsorption process showed that the IL-CNC@DP was exothermic, did not favor a high level of disorder, and spontaneous in nature. At pH 6, there is a significant increase in the removal efficiency where it increased to 90%. This also could be explained by the fact that electrostatic attraction forces and hydrogen bonding existed between the protonated Li+ and the less protonated IL-CNC@DP adsorbent surface, which enhanced the percentage of Li+ removal. A strong inter- and intra-hydrogen bonding (O-H) stretching absorption is seen at 3311 cm−1 that occurs in cellulose components. In conclusion, the IL-CNC@DP in comparison to the DP confirmed exceptional results proving that the modification enhanced the remediation of the Li+ from water. Furthermore, the selectivity of IL-CNC@DP towards real groundwater samples isolated in Qatar depends upon the physicochemical characteristics of each element. The vast demand for petroleum industry products led to the increased production of oily wastewaters and has led to many possible separation technologies. In addition to production-related oily wastewater, direct oil spills are associated with detrimental effects on the local ecosystems. Accordingly, this review paper aims to tackle the oil spill cleanup issue as well as water separation by providing a wide range of graphene-based technologies. These include graphene-based membranes; graphene sponges; graphene-decorated meshes; graphene hydrogels; graphene aerogels; graphene foam; and graphene-coated cotton. Sponges and aerogels modified by graphene and reduced graphene oxide demonstrated effective oil water separation owing to their superhydrophobic/superoleophilic properties. In addition, oil particles are intercepted while allowing water molecules to penetrate the graphene-oxide-coated metal meshes and membranes thanks to their superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic properties. Nanomaterials have emerged as the new future generation materials for high-performance water treatment membranes with potential for solving the worldwide water pollution issue. The incorporation of nanomaterials in membranes increases water permeability, mechanical strength, separation efficiency, and reduces fouling of the membrane. Thus, the nanomaterials pave a new pathway for ultra-fast and extremely selective water purification membranes. Membrane enhancements after the inclusion of many nanomaterials, including nanoparticles (NPs), two-dimensional (2-D) layer materials, nanofibers, nanosheets, and other nanocomposite structural materials, are discussed in this review. Furthermore, the applications of these membranes with nanomaterials in water treatment applications, that are vast in number, are highlighted. The goal is to demonstrate the significance of nanomaterials in the membrane industry for water treatment applications. This study evaluated biosolid quality over time and the efficiency of using amounts (5 and 7 kg/m2) of municipal class A biosolids in Qatar to fertilize tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum). Random samples were subjected to physical and chemical analysis, which revealed excellent particle uniformity and stability with minor odor defects. The analysis confirmed the product was nutrient-rich while pollutant levels were below the international standards. The nominated rates were used to fertilize tomato plants in pots grown in a greenhouse for four months with a control treatment of manure and Peat-Moss, before measuring the plant biological characteristics. Plants were examined via chemical analysis of nutrients and pollutants both for the whole plant and for stems, fruits, and leaves. Results indicated that both experimental treatments enhanced plant growth and development as compared to the control treatment. However, the chemical analyses also revealed levels of zinc, copper, and manganese in the plant fruits that were well in excess of the maximum acceptable levels, as defined by international health organizations. This study found that while the application of class A biosolids as organic fertilizer for tomato plants greatly enhanced the overall plant growth, the plant fruits contained toxic levels of trace heavy metals. In this work, the polyethyleneimine (PEI)-interlayered thin film nanocomposite (iTFN) membranes were developed by establishing graphene oxide (GO)-incorporated polyamide (PA) layer atop PEI-coated polysulfone (PSf) substrate for reverse osmosis process. The effects of PEI layer sandwiched between selective layer and substrate were studied by varying several main parameters of the PEI coating process, i.e., PEI concentration (0.005–0.2 wt/v%), drying time (0–120 min), and coating layer number (1–3 layers). The positively charged PEI interlayer was found to alter not only the hydrophilicity and pore structure of the substrate but also improve the orientation and distribution of deposited GO through electrostatic interaction. Synergic effects of GO and PEI, including enhanced substrate surface hydrophilicity and increased amine content, eventually formed a rough but thin PA layer. As a result, almost all iTFN membranes exhibited higher NaCl rejection and water permeability than the control TFN membrane (without PEI intermediate layer). This experiment revealed that PSf substrate modified with a single layer of 0.05 wt/v% PEI followed by 60-min drying yielded the TFN membrane (i.e., iTFN-C0.05-T60-L1) with the best desalination performances (96.66% NaCl rejection and 2.24 L/m2·h·bar). A simple analytical procedure is proposed for simultaneous determination of three common dyes (Basic Blue 9, Brilliant Blue E-4BA, and Reactive Blue 2) in natural waters without prior separation of the solutes. A popular chemometric method, partial least squares regression PLS-1, was effectively applied for spectral resolution of a highly overlapping system. At the best modeling conditions, mean recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSD) for dyes quantification by PLS-1 were found to be 102.1 (4.4), 95.7 (8.4), and 98.9 (6.2) for Basic Blue, Brilliant Blue, and Reactive Blue, respectively. The estimated limits of detection (LOD) were estimated using net-analyte signal concept and were 0.11, 0.52, 0.49mg L-1 for Basic Blue, Brilliant Blue, and Reactive Blue, respectively. Colloids in wastewater are considered a serious problem due to their stability and separation difficulty. Coagulation/ flocculation processes are the most common for the separation of colloids because of their high-performance efficiency, simplicity, and economical characteristic. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are green solvents that proved to be highly effective in the destabilization of colloidal suspensions. In the present study, the influence of choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA) based NADES on the rheological behavior of bentonite suspension was investigated. Furthermore, it examines the difference in the rheological behavior of NADES treated suspension with others treated with ChCl-LA mixture (LA and ChCl added one after the other). The rheological behavior are correlated to the destabilization degree of each coagulants through turbidity reduction, zeta potential, particle size distribution, and capillary suction time. The study revealed that while untreated bentonite suspension follows a Newtonian behavior, treated suspensions are non-Newtonian fluids with shear thinning behavior. Furthermore, all treated suspensions showed elastic behavior under moderate to low oscillatory frequencies. The changes in the studied rheological parameters (i.e., initial viscosity, elastic modulus, and Bingham yield stress) were influenced by the concentration in addition to the structure of the selected coagulant. The addition of higher coagulant concentration enhances the elastic properties from two to more than ten times depending on the concentration and coagulant type. At concentration of 6.76 × 10 - 2 M , suspension treated with NADES achieved an initial viscosity of 194 , 110 m P a. s and a yield stress of 2959.3 m P a which indicates the formation of stronger and stiffer flocs. On the other hand, ChCl-LA treated suspension had viscosity and yield stress of 9 and 15 magnitudes lower, respectively. Enhancing the rheological behavior of suspensions is usually attributed to higher destabilization degree, which is desirable for the further treatment processes. By increasing the concentration from 5.9 × 10 - 3 M to 6.76 × 10 - 2 M , turbidity reduction increases from 12 % to 99.9 % with an increase in the floc size from 3.3 μ m to 27.3 μ m for NADES treated suspension. Produced water is responsible for the largest contribution in terms of waste stream volume associated with the production of oil and gas. Characterization of produced water is very crucial for the determination of its main components and constituents for optimal selection of the treatment method. This review aims to review and critically discuss various treatment options that can be considered cost-efficient and environmentally friendly for the removal of different pollutants from produced water. Great efforts and progresses were made in various treatment options, including batch adsorption processes, membrane filtration, advanced oxidation, biological systems, adsorption, coagulation, and combined processes. Chemical precipitation, membrane filtration, and adsorption have high removal efficiencies that can reach more than 90% for different produced water components. The most effective method among these methods is adsorption using different adsorbents media. In this review, date-pits activated carbons, microemulsions-modified date pits, and cellulose nanocrystals as low-cost adsorbents were thoroughly reviewed and discussed. Moreover, the potential of using biological treatments in the removal of various pollutants from produced water such as conventional activated sludge, sequential batch reactor, and fixed-film biological aerated filter reactors were systematically discussed. Generally, produced water can be utilized in various fields including habitat and wildlife, agricultural and irrigation sector, energy sector, fire control, industrial use also power regeneration. The degree of treatment will depend on the application that produced water is being reused in. For instance, to use produced water in oil and gas industries, water will require minimal treatment while for agricultural and drinking purposes high treatment level will be required. It can also be concluded that one specific technique cannot be recommended that will meet all requirements including environmental, reuse, and recycling for sustainable energy. This study examines which management methods are the most recent and advanced in managing rejected brine generated from desalination plants. It also provides up-to-date information regarding the most adequate technologies that generate a minimum quantity of rejected brine via the use of minimization techniques and analyzes the method of direct disposal that has lately received noticeable improvements. It further discusses the reuse of discarded brine to recover valuable goods and sequestration of carbon dioxide. Sustainability is an important parameter that needs consideration to achieve uninterrupted operation of the discarded brine management to achieve the least environmental, social, and economic aftermath. To properly deal with any environmental issues related to brine disposal, different methods are implemented so that, in the end, higher water recovery is achievable from the desalination processes, namely brine minimization and rejection technologies (pressure retarded osmosis, microbial desalination cell technology), membrane-based technologies (vibratory shear enhanced processing, forward osmosis, electrodialysis, electrodialysis reverse, and electrodialysis metathesis, pervaporation method, thermal-based technologies (wind-aided intensified evaporation, brine concentrators, ohmic evaporator, membrane distillation, multi-stage flash distillation. This review also critically examined the two conventional approaches commonly used in life cycle assessment (LCA), when evaluating the ecotoxic effect of discarded brine. It intends to discuss the currently available methods and propose an improved method for evaluating the toxicity potential of brine on the aquatic ecosystem originated from seawater desalination plants. The Group-by-Group method takes into consideration the demerits of the two methods of the traditional method of LCA or chemical-specific approach as it provides a more holistic coverage for complicated brine to be disposed of. Recently, attention has been focused on recovering valuable metals from the discharged concentrated brine waste. Certainly, attaining marketable products from the discharged concentrated brine would offer an economic benefit and reducing the whole desalination costs. Ion imprinting polymers have potential applications in metal recovery from brine. Finding selective, more efficient, and less expensive imprinted polymers for extraction/pre-concentration of valuable ions is a vital and challenging task. Lastly, the brine should be seen as a resource and not as a waste to attain sustainability in its management approaches. Three adsorbents, namely roasted date pits (RODP), silver-modified roasted date pits (S-RODP), and activated carbon (AC) were used to investigate their adsorption characterizations in removing dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) from the collected bottle water samples.The occurrences of the phthalate esters in the collected bottled water samples were carried out at different temperatures (30, 50, and 60 °C), and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis - selected ion monitoring. Batch adsorption isotherms were used to study and establish the efficiency of such adsorbents in removing phthalate esters, in which they describe the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction systems. Adsorption efficiency of the various adsorbents was investigated by using different adsorbent masses (0.05 g, 0.10 g, and 0.15 g) and temperature (30 °C, 50 °C, and 60 °C). Different physical and chemical characterizations were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, pore radius, and pore volume.The results indicated that the most abundant phthalate esters were DMP followed by DEP under 30 °C; however, DNOP was not detected in any of the tested water samples, except for one sample under 30 °C with a concentration of 0.031 μg/mL. The obtained results showed that phthalate esters leaching to the bottled drinking water were affected by storage temperature. The phthalate esters levels were increased with increasing the temperature to 60 °C. It was concluded that the ability of S-RODP for the adsorption of phthalate esters was better than the removal percentage obtained by AC and RODP. The removal percentage was increased from 90 to 99% by increasing the temperature from 30 to 50 °C and then decreased to 92.3% at 60 °C.RODP was successfully used as an effective adsorbent for phthalate esters removal from drinking water. Different physical and chemical characterizations were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, pore radius, and pore volume.The results indicated that the most abundant phthalate esters were DMP followed by DEP under 30 °C; however, DNOP was not detected in any of the tested water samples, except for one sample under 30 °C with a concentration of 0.031 μg/mL. The obtained results showed that phthalate esters leaching to the bottled drinking water were affected by storage temperature. The phthalate esters levels were increased with increasing the temperature to 60 °C. It was concluded that the ability of S-RODP for the adsorption of phthalate esters was better than the removal percentage obtained by AC and RODP. The removal percentage was increased from 90 to 99% by increasing the temperature from 30 to 50 °C and then decreased to 92.3% at 60 °C.RODP was successfully used as an effective adsorbent for phthalate esters removal from drinking water. Three adsorbents, namely roasted date pits (RODP), silver-modified roasted date pits (S-RODP), and activated carbon (AC) were used to investigate their adsorption characterizations in removing dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) from the collected bottle water samples.The occurrences of the phthalate esters in the collected bottled water samples were carried out at different temperatures (30, 50, and 60 °C), and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis - selected ion monitoring. Batch adsorption isotherms were used to study and establish the efficiency of such adsorbents in removing phthalate esters, in which they describe the adsorbent-adsorbate interaction systems. In the current study, a smart approach for synthesizing trimethyl ethoxysilane–decorated magnetic-core silica-nanoparticles (TMS-mcSNPs) and its effectiveness as nanosorbents have been exploited. While the magnetite core was synthesized using the modified Mössbauer method, Stöber method was employed to coat the magnetic particles. The objective of this work is to maximize the magnetic properties and to minimize both particle size (PS) and particle size distribution (PSD). Using a full factorial design (2k-FFD), the influences of four factors on the coating process was assessed by optimizing the three responses (magnetic properties, PS, and PSD). These four factors were: (1) concentration of tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS); (2) concentration of ammonia; (3) dose of magnetite (Fe3O4); and (4) addition mode. Magnetic properties were calculated as the attraction weight. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine PS, and standard deviation (±SD) was calculated to determine the PSD. Composite desirability function (D) was used to consolidate the multiple responses into a single performance characteristic. Pareto chart of standardized effects together with analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 95.0 confidence interval (CI) were used to determine statistically significant variable(s). Lead (Pb) is the second most toxic metal on Earth and is toxic to humans and other living things. In plants, Pb commonly inhibits growth when it is at a concentration in the soil of 30 mg/kg or more but several Pb tolerant plants have been reported. However, few studies have focused on plant response to Pb exposure, particularly at concentrations higher than 30 mg/kg. The assessment and evaluation of metal dose-dependent plant responses will assist in future phytoremediation studies. Therefore, this work documents the Pb concentration-dependent antioxidative response in Tetraena qataranse. Young seedlings were irrigated with 0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L Pb every 48 h for seven weeks under greenhouse conditions. A phytotoxicity test showed that at the lowest treatment concentration, Pb stimulates growth. However, at 100 mg/L (1600 mg/kg Pb in the growth medium at harvest), the metal disrupted healthy growth in T. qataranse, particularly root development. Metal accumulation in the root was higher (up to 2784 mg/kg) than that of the shoot (1141.6 mg/kg). Activity assays of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), and glutathione reductase (GR) showed a progressive increase in enzymatic activities due to Pb treatment. Together, the results of this study suggest that T. qataranse is a Pb hyperaccumulator. Increased antioxidant enzyme activity was essential to maintaining cellular homeostasis and assisted in the arid plant's tolerance to Pb stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measured viscosity and density data for ternary aqueous solutions of CaCl2 and KCl are presented at temperatures between 293 and 323 K with 5 K increment. A modified Jones–Dole was introduced by adding extra terms and proved to be suitable for modelling of the viscosity data. Goldsack and Franchetto, Hu and Exponential models are used to correlate the viscosity data, too. Al models are correlated as a function of temperature and concentration. All models had successfully predicted the viscosity with high precision reaching a maximum average absolute deviation (AAD) of less than 2.3%. The modified Jones–Dole showed the best results among other models. Viscosity of the ternary solution is higher than the viscosity of water by about 15% at low concentrations and reaches about 270% at the highest concentrations. The amount of CaCl2 has more significant effect on the ternary mixture viscosity compared to KCl. This has created difficulty in measuring the viscosity and consequently the challenge in finding the different models parameters. Ternary solution densities were successfully correlate with Kumar's model with AAD of less than 0.4%. This study attempted to use produced water (PW) to irrigate turfgrass species, Cynodon dactylon and Paspalum sp. Assessment on established grasses, heavy metal accumulation and germination tests for weeds and turf grass seeds were conducted to evaluate the impact of PW irrigation. C. dactylon depicted lower tolerance while Paspalum sp. showed better tolerance capacity towards PW. C. dactylon grown from seeds under greenhouse conditions were not able to tolerate more than 30% concentration of PW (4.5% salinity). In comparison to tap water irrigated turf grass, Paspalum sp. was found to accumulate higher concentrations of V and Pb in shoots and Cr, Ni and As in roots. The results of seed germination tests recommended that irrigation with PW is to be performed after turfgrass establishment. Germination tests also revealed that PW could encourage growth of the weed—Chloris virgata while it could discourage growth of Amaranthus viridis and Launaea mucronata. This study suggests that PW could be used for turfgrass as an alternative water resource but only after further research on the long-term scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Hybrid coagulation-flocculation on the flocculation of bentonite is investigated. • Compared to single PAM, hybrid systems performed exceptionally well. • Hybrid systems were able produce bigger flocs than single systems. In this study, the influence of the hybrid coagulation-flocculation system on the flocculation and shear resistivity of bentonite suspension has been investigated. Two short-chained coagulants, polyamine and polyDADMAC, accompanied with low and high Molecular Weight (Mw) long-chained anionic Polyacrylamide (PAM) flocculants have been used to enhance the size and mechanical properties of the produced flocs. Four characterization techniques were used as evaluation criteria of degree of flocculation including turbidity, zeta potential (ζ), floc size analysis and rheology. Optimum dosages between 5 and 10 mg/L were obtained for flocculants and between 20 and 30 mg/L for coagulants in hybrid systems. Compared to single systems, hybrid systems performed exceptionally well. Removal efficiency of 99% was achieved using hybrid systems producing water with turbidity as low as 1.05 NTU. Although differences were insignificant in the treatment quality, significant improvement was achieved in floc size and rheological behavior. Hybrid systems were able to produce large flocs of more than 400 µm, five times bigger than flocs from the single cationic coagulant systems. Most importantly, rheological testing of produced slurries revealed the remarkable advancement achieved by hybrid systems. Hybrid systems were able to increase the elastic modulus (G′) by more than ten times resulting from the compacted flocs present in the system. Furthermore, resistivity toward shear and oscillations were improved. Ultimately, hybrid systems have surpassed the single cationic systems by achieving slightly better treatment besides producing larger, denser and more resistive flocs. Generally, polyDADMAC performed better than polyamine in hybrid systems. The combination of polyDADMAC with high Mw PAM gave the best separation as well as the largest flocs, while the combination with low Mw PAM resulted in the best rheological properties.
