In this chapter, we investigate the mathematical foundation of the modeling and design of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in both the far- and near-field regimes. More specifically, we first present RIS-assisted wireless channel models for the far- and near-field regimes, discussing relevant phenomena, such as line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS links, rich and poor scattering, channel correlation, and array manifold. Subsequently, we introduce two general approaches for the RIS reflective beam design, namely optimization-based and analytical, which offer different degrees of design flexibility and computational complexity. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive set of simulation results for the performance evaluation of the studied RIS beam designs and the investigation of the impact of the system parameters.

The latest assessments of the emerging technologies for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have indicated the concept's significant potential for localization and sensing, either as individual or simultaneously realized tasks. However, in the vast majority of those studies, the RIS state (i.e., its position and rotation angles) is required to be known a priori. In this paper, we address the problem of the joint three-dimensional (3D) localization of a hybrid RIS (HRIS) and a user. The most cost- and power-efficient hybrid version of an RIS is equipped with a single reception radio-frequency chain and meta-atoms capable of simultaneous reconfigurable reflection and sensing. This dual functionality is controlled by adjustable power splitters embedded at each hybrid meta-atom. Focusing on a downlink scenario where a multi-antenna base station transmits multicarrier signals to a user via an HRIS, we propose a multistage approach to jointly estimate the metasurface's 3D position and 3D rotation matrix (i.e., 6D parameter estimation) as well as the user's 3D position. Our simulation results verify the validity of the proposed estimator via extensive comparisons of the root-mean-square error of the state estimations with the Cram\'{e}r-Rao lower bound (CRB), which is analytically derived. Furthermore, it is showcased that there exists an optimal hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (HRIS) power splitting ratio for the desired multi-parameter estimation problem. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are rapidly gaining prominence in the realm of fifth generation (5G)-Advanced, and predominantly, sixth generation (6G) mobile networks, offering a revolutionary approach to optimizing wireless communications. This article delves into the intricate world of the RIS technology, exploring its diverse hardware architectures and the resulting versatile operating modes. These include RISs with signal reception and processing units, sensors, amplification units, transmissive capability, multiple stacked components, and dynamic metasurface antennas. Furthermore, we shed light on emerging RIS applications, such as index and reflection modulation, non-coherent modulation, next generation multiple access, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), energy harvesting, as well as aerial and vehicular networks. These exciting applications are set to transform the way we will wirelessly connect in the upcoming era of 6G. Finally, we review recent experimental RIS setups and present various open problems of the overviewed RIS hardware architectures and their applications. From enhancing network coverage to enabling new communication paradigms, RIS-empowered connectivity is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of wireless networking. In this paper, we study underlay device-to-device (D2D) communication systems empowered by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for cognitive cellular networks. Considering Rayleigh fading channels and the general case where there exist both the direct and RIS-enabled D2D channels, the outage probability (OP) of the D2D communication link is presented in closed-form. Next, for the considered RIS-empowered underlaid D2D system, we frame an OP minimization problem. We target the joint optimization of the transmit power at the D2D source and the RIS placement, under constraints on the transmit power at the D2D source and on the limited interference imposed on the cellular user for two RIS deployment topologies. Due to the coupled optimization variables, the formulated optimization problem is extremely intractable. We propose an equivalent transformation which we are able to solve analytically. In the transformed problem, an expression for the average value of the signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) at the D2D receiver is derived in closed-form. Our theoretical derivations are corroborated through simulation results, and various system design insights are deduced. It is indicatively showcased that the proposed RIS-empowered underlaid D2D system design outperforms the benchmark semi-adaptive optimal power and optimal distance schemes, offering $44\%$ and $20\%$ performance improvement, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Full-Duplex Integrated Sensing and Communication System consisting of multiple targets, a single downlink, and a single uplink user. We employed signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) as the performance metric for radar, downlink, and uplink communication. We use a communication-centric approach in which communication waveform is used for both communication and sensing of the environment. We develop a sensing algorithm capable of estimating the direction of arrival (DoA), range, and velocity of each target. We also propose a joint optimization framework for designing A/D transmit and receive beamformers to improve radar, downlink, and uplink SINRs while minimizing self-interference (SI) leakage. We also propose a null space projection (NSP) based approach to improve the uplink rate. This work lies at the intersection of two cutting edge technologies envisioned to proliferate in future 6G wireless systems: Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs). While the former will bring a powerful information technology environment at the wireless edge, the latter will enhance communication performance, thanks to the possibility of adapting wireless propagation as per end users' convenience, according to specific service requirements. We propose a joint optimization of radio, computing, and wireless environment reconfiguration through an RIS, with the goal of enabling low power computation offloading services with reliability guarantees. Going beyond previous works on this topic, multi-carrier frequency selective RIS elements' responses and wireless channels are considered. This opens new challenges in RIS optimization, accounting for frequency dependent RIS response profiles, which strongly affect RIS-aided wireless links and, as a consequence, MEC service performance. We formulate an optimization problem accounting for short and long-term constraints involving device transmit power allocation across multiple subcarriers and local computing resources, as well as RIS reconfiguration parameters according to a recently developed Lorentzian model. Future wireless systems are envisioned to utilize the large spectra available at THz bands for wireless communications. Extremely massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas can be costly and power inefficient for wideband THz communications. An alternative antenna technology, which can achieve low cost and power efficient THz signaling, is based on leaky wave antennas (LWAs). In this paper, we explore the usage of the LWAs for wideband downlink multi-user THz communications. We propose a model for LWA-aided communication systems that faithfully captures the antenna operations. We that LWAs yield frequency-dependent beams, where the equivalent wideband channel induces dependence between angle, frequency, and spectral lobe width. We identify the LWAs inherent frequency-selective beamsteering capabilities as motivating multi-band THz communications that deviate from conventional orthogonal frequency-division, and employ non-identical subbands. Then, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm for jointly optimizing the LWA configuration along with the spectral division and power allocation to maximize the achievable sum-rate. Our numerical results show that a single LWA can generate diverse beampatterns, exhibiting performance comparable to costly fully digital MIMO. Interestingly, we demonstrate that allowing transmission with non-identical subbands leverages the characteristics of LWA-based channels compared to uniform division, yielding improved beamsteering that translate to higher rates., Comment: Under review in the IEEE

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are considered as an enabling technology for the upcoming sixth generation of wireless systems, exhibiting significant potential for radio localization and sensing. An RIS is usually treated as an anchor point with known position and orientation when deployed to offer user localization. However, it can also be attached to a user to enable its localization in a semi-passive manner. In this paper, we consider a static user equipped with an RIS and study the RIS localization problem (i.e., joint three-dimensional position and orientation estimation), when operating in a system comprising a single-antenna transmitter and multiple synchronized single-antenna receivers with known locations. We present a multi-stage estimator using time-of-arrival and spatial frequency measurements, and derive the Cram\'er-Rao lower bounds for the estimated parameters to validate the estimator's performance. Our simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RIS state estimation approach under various system operation parameters.

User localization and tracking in the upcoming generation of wireless networks have the potential to be revolutionized by technologies such as the Dynamic Metasurface Antennas (DMAs). Commonly proposed algorithmic approaches rely on assumptions about relatively dominant Line-of-Sight (LoS) paths, or require pilot transmission sequences whose length is comparable to the number of DMA elements, thus, leading to limited effectiveness and considerable measurement overheads in blocked LoS and dynamic multipath environments. In this paper, we present a two-stage machine-learning-based approach for user tracking, specifically designed for non-LoS multipath settings. A newly proposed attention-based Neural Network (NN) is first trained to map noisy channel responses to potential user positions, regardless of user mobility patterns. This architecture constitutes a modification of the prominent vision transformer, specifically modified for extracting information from high-dimensional frequency response signals. As a second stage, the NN's predictions for the past user positions are passed through a learnable autoregressive model to exploit the time-correlated channel information and obtain the final position predictions. The channel estimation procedure leverages a DMA receive architecture with partially-connected radio frequency chains, which results to reduced numbers of pilots. In this paper, we study the problem of extremely large (XL) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation in the terahertz (THz) frequency band, considering the presence of propagation delays across the entire array apertures at both communication ends, which naturally leads to frequency selectivity. This problem is known as beam squint and may be pronounced when communications are subject to multipath fading conditions. Multi-carrier (MC) transmission schemes, which are usually deployed in THz communication systems to address these issues, suffer from high peak-to-average power ratio, which is specifically dominant in this frequency band where low transmit power is mostly feasible. Furthermore, the frequency selectivity caused by severe molecular absorption in the THz band necessitates delicate consideration in MC system design. Motivated by the benefits of single-carrier (SC) waveforms for practical THz communication systems, diverging from the current dominant research trend on MC systems, we devise a novel channel estimation problem formulation in the time domain for SC XL MIMO systems subject to multipath signal propagation, spatial wideband effects, and molecular absorption. An efficient alternating minimization approach is presented to solve the proposed mixed-integer sparse problem formulation. The conducted extensive performance evaluation results validate that the proposed XL MIMO estimation scheme exhibits superior performance than conventional SC- and MC-based techniques, approaching the idealized lower bound.

In this paper, we study the performance of wireless communications empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RISs) over Nakagami-m fading channels. We consider two phase configuration designs for the RIS, one random and another one based on coherent phase shifting. For both phase configuration cases, we present single-integral expressions for the outage probability and the bit error rate of binary modulation schemes, which can be efficiently evaluated numerically. In addition, we propose accurate closed-form approximations for the ergodic capacity of the considered system. For all considered metrics, we have also derived simple analytical expressions that become tight for large numbers of RIS reflecting elements. Numerically evaluated results compared with Monte Carlo simulations are presented in order to verify the correctness of the proposed analysis and showcase the impact of various system settings.

The envisioned wireless networks of the future entail the provisioning of massive numbers of connections, heterogeneous data traffic, ultra-high spectral efficiency, and low latency services. This vision is spurring research activities focused on defining a next generation multiple access (NGMA) protocol that can accommodate massive numbers of users in different resource blocks, thereby, achieving higher spectral efficiency and increased connectivity compared to conventional multiple access schemes. In this article, we present a multiple access scheme for NGMA in wireless communication systems assisted by multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this regard, considering the practical scenario of static users operating together with mobile ones, we first study the interplay of the design of NGMA schemes and RIS phase configuration in terms of efficiency and complexity. Based on this, we then propose a multiple access framework for RIS-assisted communication systems, and we also design a medium access control (MAC) protocol incorporating RISs. In addition, we give a detailed performance analysis of the designed RIS-assisted MAC protocol. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MAC design outperforms the benchmarks in terms of system throughput and access fairness, and also reveal a trade-off relationship between the system throughput and fairness.

Time Reversal (TR) has been proposed as a competitive precoding strategy for low-complexity devices, relying on ultra-wideband waveforms. This transmit processing paradigm can address the need for low power and low complexity receivers, which is particularly important for the Internet of Things, since it shifts most of the communications signal processing complexity to the transmitter side. Due to its spatio-temporal focusing property, TR has also been used to design multiple access schemes for multi-user communications scenarios. However, in wideband time-division multiple access schemes, the signals received by users suffer from significant levels of inter-symbol interference as well as interference from uncoordinated users, which often require additional processing at the receiver side. This paper proposes an iterative TR scheme that aims to reduce the level of interference in wideband multi-user settings, while keeping the processing complexity only at the transmitter side. The performance of the proposed TR-based protocol is evaluated using analytical derivations. The paradigm of joint communications and sensing (JCAS) envisions a revolutionary integration of communication and radar functionalities within a unified hardware platform. This novel concept not only opens up unprecedented interoperability opportunities, but also exhibits unique design challenges. To this end, the success of JCAS is highly dependent on efficient full-duplex (FD) operation, which has the potential to enable simultaneous transmission and reception within the same frequency band. While JCAS research is lately expanding, there still exist relevant directions of investigation that hold tremendous potential to profoundly transform the sixth generation (6G), and beyond, cellular networks. This article presents new opportunities and challenges brought up by FD-enabled JCAS, taking into account the key technical peculiarities of FD systems. Unlike simplified JCAS scenarios, we delve into the most comprehensive configuration, encompassing uplink and downlink users, as well as monostatic and bistatic radars, all harmoniously coexisting to jointly push the boundaries of both communications and sensing. The performance improvements resulting from this advancement bring forth numerous new challenges, each meticulously examined and expounded upon.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute a strong candidate physical-layer technology for the $6$-th Generation (6G) of wireless networks, offering new design degrees of freedom for efficiently addressing demanding performance objectives. In this paper, we consider a Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) physical-layer security system incorporating a reflective RIS to safeguard wireless communications between a legitimate transmitter and receiver under the presence of an eavesdropper. In contrast to current studies optimizing RISs for given positions of the legitimate and eavesdropping nodes, in this paper, we focus on devising RIS-enabled secrecy for given geographical areas of potential nodes' placement. We propose a novel secrecy metric, capturing the spatially averaged secrecy spectral efficiency, and present a joint design of the transmit digital beamforming and the RIS analog phase profile, which is realized via a combination of alternating optimization and minorization-maximization. The proposed framework bypasses the need for instantaneous knowledge of the eavesdropper's channel or position, and targets providing an RIS-boosted secure area of legitimate communications with a single configuration of the free parameters. The full-duplex (FD) technology has the potential to radically evolve wireless systems, facilitating the integration of both communications and radar functionalities into a single device, thus, enabling joint communication and sensing (JCAS). In this paper, we present a novel approach for JCAS that incorporates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the near-field of an FD multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) node, which is jointly optimized with the digital beamformers to enable JSAC and efficiently handle self-interference (SI). We propose a novel problem formulation for FD MIMO JCAS systems to jointly minimize the total received power at the FD node's radar receiver while maximizing the sum rate of downlink communications subject to a Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound (CRB) constraint. In contrast to the typically used CRB in the relevant literature, we derive a novel, more accurate, target estimation bound that fully takes into account the RIS deployment. The considered problem is solved using alternating optimization, which is guaranteed to converge to a local optimum. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves significant performance improvement both for communications and sensing. It is showcased that, jointly designing the FD MIMO beamformers and the RIS phase configuration to be SI aware can significantly loosen the requirement for additional SI cancellation.

In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for energy-efficient, low-latency, accurate inference at the wireless edge, in the context of 6G networks endowed with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We consider a scenario where new data are continuously generated/collected by a set of devices and are handled through a dynamic queueing system. Building on the marriage between Lyapunov stochastic optimization and deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we devise a dynamic learning algorithm that jointly optimizes the data compression scheme, the allocation of radio resources (i.e., power, transmission precoding), the computation resources (i.e., CPU cycles), and the RIS reflectivity parameters (i.e., phase shifts), with the aim of performing energy-efficient edge classification with end-to-end (E2E) delay and inference accuracy constraints. The proposed strategy enables dynamic control of the system and of the wireless propagation environment, performing a low-complexity optimization on a per-slot basis while dealing with time-varying radio channels and task arrivals, whose statistics are unknown. Numerical results assess the performance of the proposed RIS-empowered edge inference strategy in terms of trade-off between energy, delay, and accuracy of a classification task.

The revolutionary technology of \emph{Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM)} has been recently shown to be capable of carrying out advanced signal processing directly in the native electromagnetic (EM) wave domain. An SIM is fabricated by a sophisticated amalgam of multiple stacked metasurface layers, which may outperform its single-layer metasurface counterparts, such as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISd) and metasurface lenses. We harness this new SIM concept for implementing efficient holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) communications that dot require excessive radio-frequency (RF) chains, which constitutes a substantial benefit compared to existing implementations. We first present an HMIMO communication system based on a pair of SIMs at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), respectively. In sharp contrast to the conventional MIMO designs, the considered SIMs are capable of automatically accomplishing transmit precoding and receiver combining, as the EM waves propagate through them. As such, each information data stream can be directly radiated and recovered from the corresponding transmit and receive ports. Secondly, we formulate the problem of minimizing the error between the actual end-to-end SIMs'parametrized channel matrix and the target diagonal one, with the latter representing a flawless interference-free system of parallel subchannels. This is achieved by jointly optimizing the phase shifts associated with all the metasurface layers of both the TX-SIM and RX-SIM. We then design a gradient descent algorithm to solve the resultant non-convex problem. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the HMIMO channel capacity bound and provide some useful fundamental insights. This paper presents the development and evaluation of WiThRay, a new wireless three-dimensional ray-tracing (RT) simulator. RT-based simulators are widely used for generating realistic channel data by combining RT methodology to get signal trajectories and electromagnetic (EM) equations, resulting in generalized channel impulse responses (CIRs). This paper first provides a comprehensive comparison on methodologies of existing RT-based simulators. We then introduce WiThRay, which can evaluate the performance of various wireless communication techniques such as channel estimation/tracking, beamforming, and localization in realistic EM wave propagation. WiThRay implements its own RT methodology, the bypassing on edge (BE) algorithm, that follows the Fermat's principle and has low computational complexity. The scattering ray calibration in WiThRay also provides a precise solution in the analysis of EM propagation. Different from most of the previous RT-based simulators, WiThRay incorporates reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which will be a key component of future wireless communications. We thoroughly show that the channel data from WiThRay match sufficiently well with the fundamental theory of wireless channels. The virtue of WiThRay lies in its feature of not making any assumption about the channel, like being slow/fast fading or frequency selective. A realistic wireless environment, which can be conveniently simulated via WiThRay, naturally defines the physical properties of the wireless channels. The use of in-band full-duplex (FD) enables nodes to simultaneously transmit and receive on the same frequency band, which challenges the traditional assumption in wireless network design. The full-duplex capability enhances spectral efficiency and decreases latency, which are two key drivers pushing the performance expectations of next-generation mobile networks. In less than ten years, in-band FD has advanced from being demonstrated in research labs to being implemented in standards, presenting new opportunities to utilize its foundational concepts. Some of the most significant opportunities include using FD to enable wireless networks to sense the physical environment, integrate sensing and communication applications, develop integrated access and backhaul solutions, and work with smart signal propagation environments powered by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. The research on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) has dominantly been focused on physical-layer aspects and analyses of the achievable adaptation of the wireless propagation environment. Compared to that, questions related to system-level integration of RISs have received less attention. We address this research gap by analyzing the necessary control/signaling operations that are necessary to integrate RIS as a new type of wireless infrastructure element. We build a general model for evaluating the impact of control operations along two dimensions: i) the allocated bandwidth of the control channels (in-band and out-of-band), and ii) the rate selection for the data channel (multiplexing or diversity). Specifically, the second dimension results in two generic transmission schemes, one based on channel estimation and the subsequent optimization of the RIS, while the other is based on sweeping through predefined RIS phase configurations. We analyze the communication performance in multiple setups built along these two dimensions. While necessarily simplified, our analysis reveals the basic trade-offs in RIS-assisted communication and the associated control operations. The technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) has been showing promising potential in a variety of applications relying on Beyond-5G networks. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can indeed provide fine channel flexibility to improve communication quality of service (QoS) or restore localization capabilities in challenging operating conditions, while conventional approaches fail (e.g., due to insufficient infrastructure, severe radio obstructions). In this paper, we tackle a general low-complexity approach for optimizing the precoders that control such reflective surfaces under hardware constraints. More specifically, it allows the approximation of any desired beam pattern using a pre-characterized look-up table of feasible complex reflection coefficients for each RIS element. The proposed method is first evaluated in terms of beam fidelity for several examples of RIS hardware prototypes. Then, by means of a theoretical bounds analysis, we examine the impact of RIS beams approximation on the performance of near-field downlink positioning in non-line-of-sight conditions, while considering several RIS phase profiles (incl. directional, random and localization-optimal designs). Simulation results in a canonical scenario illustrate how the introduced RIS profile optimization scheme can reliably produce the desired RIS beams under realistic hardware limitations. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) constitute the key enabler for programmable electromagnetic propagation environments, and are lately being considered as a candidate physical-layer technology for the demanding connectivity, reliability, localization, and sustainability requirements of next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we first present the deployment scenarios for RIS-enabled smart wireless environments that have been recently designed within the ongoing European Union Horizon 2020 RISE-6G project, as well as a network architecture integrating RISs with existing standardized interfaces. We identify various RIS deployment strategies and sketch the core architectural requirements in terms of RIS control and signaling, depending on the RIS hardware architectures and respective capabilities. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss, with the aid of simulations and reflectarray measurements, two novel metrics that emerge in the context of RIS-empowered wireless systems: the RIS bandwidth and area of influence. This paper presents an in-band Full Duplex (FD) integrated sensing and communications system comprising a holographic Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) base station, which is capable to simultaneously communicate with multiple users in the downlink direction, while sensing targets being randomly distributed within its coverage area. Considering near-field wireless operation at THz frequencies, the FD node adopts dynamic metasurface antenna panels for both transmission and reception, which consist of massive numbers of sub-wavelength-spaced metamaterials, enabling reduced cost and power consumption analog precoding and combining. We devise an optimization framework for the FD node's reconfigurable parameters with the dual objective of maximizing the targets' parameters estimation accuracy and the downlink communication performance. Beamforming with large-scale antenna arrays has been widely used in recent years, which is acknowledged as an important part in 5G and incoming 6G. Thus, various techniques are leveraged to improve its performance, e.g., deep learning, advanced optimization algorithms, etc. Although its performance in many previous research scenarios with deep learning is quite attractive, usually it drops rapidly when the environment or dataset is changed. Therefore, designing effective beamforming network with strong robustness is an open issue for the intelligent wireless communications. In this paper, we propose a robust beamforming self-supervised network, and verify it in two kinds of different datasets with various scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed self-supervised network with hybrid learning performs well in both classic DeepMIMO and new WAIR-D dataset with the strong robustness under the various environments. Indexed modulation (IM) is an evolving technique that has become popular due to its ability of parallel data communication over distinct combinations of transmission entities. In this article, we first provide a comprehensive survey of IM-enabled multiple access (MA) techniques, emphasizing the shortcomings of existing non-indexed MA schemes. Theoretical comparisons are presented to show how the notion of indexing eliminates the limitations of non-indexed solutions. We also discuss the benefits that the utilization of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can offer when deployed as an indexing entity. In particular, we propose an RIS-indexed multiple access (RIMA) transmission scheme that utilizes dynamic phase tuning to embed multi-user information over a single carrier. The performance of the proposed RIMA is assessed in light of simulation results that confirm its performance gains. This paper studies the exploitation of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, aiming at capacity boosting without enlarging the antenna array size. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with an HMIMOS comprising compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas. To characterize TP MUHMIMOS systems, a TP near-field channel model is proposed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design a user-cluster-based precoding scheme for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. A theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS with infinitely small patch antennas is also presented. According to the proposed scheme, the users are assigned to one of the three polarizations, which is easy to implement, at the cost, however, of reducing the system's diversity. We analytically derive from first physical principles the functional dependence of wireless channels on the RIS configuration for generic (i.e., potentially complex-scattering) RIS-parametrized radio environments. The wireless channel is a linear input-output relation that depends non-linearly on the RIS configuration because of two independent mechanisms: i) proximity-induced mutual coupling between close-by RIS elements; ii) reverberation-induced long-range coupling between all RIS elements. Mathematically, this "structural" non-linearity originates from the inversion of an "interaction" matrix that can be cast as the sum of an infinite Born series [for i)] or Born-like series [for ii)] whose $K$th term physically represents paths involving $K$ bounces between the RIS elements [for i)] or wireless entities [for ii)]. We identify the key physical parameters that determine whether these series can be truncated after the first and second term, respectively, as tacitly done in common cascaded models of RIS-parametrized wireless channels. Numerical results obtained with the physics-compliant PhysFad model and experimental results obtained with a RIS prototype in an anechoic (echo-free) chamber and rich-scattering reverberation chambers corroborate our analysis. Recent research and development interests deal with metasurfaces for wireless systems beyond their consideration as intelligent tunable reflectors. Among the latest proposals is the simultaneously transmitting (a.k.a. refracting) and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) which intends to enable bidirectional indoor-to-outdoor, and vice versa, communications thanks to its additional refraction capability. This double functionality provides increased flexibility in concurrently satisfying the quality-of-service requirements of users located at both sides of the metasurfaces, for example, the achievable data rate and localization accuracy. In this paper, we focus on STAR-RIS-empowered simultaneous indoor and outdoor three-dimensional (3D) localization, and study the fundamental performance limits via Fisher information analyses and Cram\'er Rao lower bounds (CRLBs). We also devise an efficient localization algorithm based on an off-grid compressive sensing (CS) technique relying on atomic norm minimization (ANM). The impact of the training overhead, the power splitting at the STAR-RIS, the power allocation between the users, the STAR-RIS size, the imperfections of the STAR-RIS-to-BS channel, as well as the role of the multi-path components on the positioning performance are assessed via extensive computer simulations. A smart city involves, among other elements, intelligent transportation, crowd monitoring, and digital twins, each of which requires information exchange via wireless communication links and localization of connected devices and passive objects (including people). Although localization and sensing (L&S) are envisioned as core functions of future communication systems, they have inherently different demands in terms of infrastructure compared to communications. Wireless communications generally requires a connection to only a single access point (AP), while L&S demand simultaneous line-of-sight propagation paths to several APs, which serve as location and orientation anchors. Hence, a smart city deployment optimized for communication will be insufficient to meet stringent L&S requirements. In this article, we argue that the emerging technologies of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and sidelink communications constitute the key to providing ubiquitous coverage for L&S in smart cities with low-cost and energy-efficient technical solutions. To this end, we propose and evaluate AP-coordinated and self-coordinated RIS-enabled L&S architectures and detail three groups of application scenarios, relying on low-complexity beacons, cooperative localization, and full-duplex transceivers. A list of practical issues and consequent open research challenges of the proposed L&S systems is also provided.

We propose a framework for monostatic sensing by a user equipment (UE), aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in environments with single- and double-bounce signal propagation. We design appropriate UE-side precoding and combining, to facilitate signal separation. We derive the adaptive detection probabilities of the resolvable signals, based on the geometric channel parameters of the links. Then, we estimate the passive objects using both the double-bounce signals via passive RIS (i.e., RIS-sensing) and the single-bounce multipath direct to the objects (i.e., non-RIS-sensing), based on a mapping filter. Finally, we provide numerical results to demonstrate that effective sensing can be achieved through the proposed framework.

In the upcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces~(RISs) are regarded as one of the promising technological enablers, which can provide programmable signal propagation. Therefore, simultaneous radio localization and mapping(SLAM) with RISs appears as an emerging research direction within the 6G ecosystem. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of RIS-enabled radio SLAM for wireless operation without the intervention of access points (APs). We first design the RIS phase profiles leveraging prior information for the user equipment~(UE), such that they uniformly illuminate the angular sector where the UE is probabilistically located. Second, we modify the marginal Poisson multi-Bernoulli SLAM filter and estimate the UE state and landmarks, which enables efficient mapping of the radio propagation environment. Third, we derive the theoretical Cram\'er-Rao lower bounds on the estimators for the channel parameters and the UE state. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed method under scenarios with a limited number of transmissions, taking into account the channel coherence time. Our results demonstrate that the RIS enables solving the radio SLAM problem with zero APs, and that the consideration of the Doppler shift contributes to improving the UE speed estimates.

The potential of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) for energy-efficient and performance-boosted wireless communications is recently gaining remarkable research attention, motivating their consideration for various $5$-th Generation (5G) Advanced and beyond applications. In this paper, we consider a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Physical Layer Security (PLS) system with multiple data streams including one legitimate passive RIS and one malicious passive RIS, with the former being transparent to the multi-antenna eavesdropper and the latter's presence being unknown at the legitimate multi-antenna transceivers. We first present a novel threat model for the RIS-boosted eavesdropping system and design a joint optimization framework for the eavesdropper's receive combining matrix and the reflection coefficients of the malicious RIS. Focusing next on the secrecy rate maximization problem, we present an RIS-empowered PLS scheme that jointly designs the legitimate precoding matrix and number of data streams, the Artificial Noise (AN) covariance matrix, the receive combining matrix, and the reflection coefficients of the legitimate RIS. The proposed optimization algorithms, whose convergence to at least local optimum points is proved, are based on alternating maximization, minorization-maximization, and manifold optimization, including semi-closed form expressions for the optimization variables. Our extensive simulation results for two representative system setups reveal that, in the absence of a legitimate RIS, transceiver spatial filtering and AN are incapable of offering non-zero secrecy rates, even for malicious RISs with small numbers of elements. In this paper, we introduce the concept of partially-connected Receiving Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (R-RISs), which refers to metasurfaces designed to efficiently sense electromagnetic waveforms impinging on them, and perform localization of the users emitting them. The presented R-RIS hardware architecture comprises subarrays of meta-atoms, with each of them incorporating a waveguide assigned to direct the waveforms reaching its meta-atoms to a reception Radio-Frequency (RF) chain, enabling signal/channel parameter estimation. We particularly focus on the scenarios where the user is located in the far-field of all the R-RIS subarrays, and present a three-Dimensional (3D) localization method which is based on narrowband signaling and Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimates of the impinging signals at each single-receive-RF R-RIS subarray. For the AoA estimation, which relies on spatially sampled versions of the received signals via each subarray's phase configuration of meta-atoms, we devise an off-grid atomic norm minimization approach, which is followed by subspace-based root MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC). The AoA estimates are finally combined via a least-squared line intersection method to obtain the position coordinates of a user emitting synchronized localization pilots. Our derived theoretical Cram\'er Rao Lower Bounds (CRLBs) on the estimation parameters, which are compared with extensive computer simulation results of our localization approach, verify the effectiveness of the proposed R-RIS-empowered 3D localization system, which is showcased to offer cm-level positioning accuracy. Future wireless systems are envisioned to create an endogenously holography-capable, intelligent, and programmable radio propagation environment, that will offer unprecedented capabilities for high spectral and energy efficiency, low latency, and massive connectivity. A potential and promising technology for supporting the expected extreme requirements of the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems is the concept of the holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO), which will actualize holographic radios with reasonable power consumption and fabrication cost. The HMIMO is facilitated by ultra-thin, extremely large, and nearly continuous surfaces that incorporate reconfigurable and sub-wavelength-spaced antennas and/or metamaterials. Such surfaces comprising dense electromagnetic (EM) excited elements are capable of recording and manipulating impinging fields with utmost flexibility and precision, as well as with reduced cost and power consumption, thereby shaping arbitrary-intended EM waves with high energy efficiency. The powerful EM processing capability of HMIMO opens up the possibility of wireless communications of holographic imaging level, paving the way for signal processing techniques realized in the EM-domain, possibly in conjunction with their digital-domain counterparts. However, in spite of the significant potential, the studies on HMIMO communications are still at an initial stage, its fundamental limits remain to be unveiled, and a certain number of critical technical challenges need to be addressed. In this survey, we present a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the HMIMO communications paradigm, with a special focus on their physical aspects, their theoretical foundations, as well as the enabling technologies for HMIMO systems. This paper investigates the utilization of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multi-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, targeting capacity boosting and diversity exploitation without enlarging the antenna array sizes. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are both equipped with an HMIMOS consisting of compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas within the near-field (NF) regime. To characterize TP MU-HMIMOS systems, a TP NF channel model is constructed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design two precoding schemes for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. Specifically, a user-cluster-based precoding scheme assigns different users to one of three polarizations at the expense of the system's diversity, and a two-layer precoding scheme removes interference using the Gaussian elimination method at a high computational cost. The theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS in the NF region is also investigated, revealing that both the spacing of transmit patch antennas and user distance impact transmit correlation factors. Our numerical results show that the users far from transmitting HMIMOS experience higher correlation than those closer within the NF regime, resulting in a lower channel capacity. Meanwhile, in terms of channel capacity, TP HMIMOS can almost achieve 1.25 times gain compared with dual-polarized HMIMOS, and 3 times compared with conventional HMIMOS. In addition, the proposed two-layer precoding scheme combined with two-layer power allocation realizes a higher spectral efficiency than other schemes without sacrificing diversity.

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) are envisioned to be an integral part of future wireless networks, especially when operating at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) frequency bands. However, establishing wireless connections at these high frequencies is quite challenging, mainly due to the penetrating pathloss that prevents reliable communication and sensing. Another emerging technology for next-generation wireless systems is reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable of modifying harsh propagation environments. RISs are the focus of growing research and industrial attention, bringing forth the vision of smart and programmable signal propagation environments. In this article, we provide a tutorial-style overview of the applications and benefits of RISs for sensing functionalities in general, and for ISAC systems in particular. We highlight the potential advantages when fusing these two emerging technologies, and identify for the first time that: i) joint sensing and communications designs are most beneficial when the channels referring to these operations are coupled, and that ii) RISs offer means for controlling this beneficial coupling. The usefulness of RIS-aided ISAC goes beyond the individual obvious gains of each of these technologies in both performance and power efficiency. In this paper, the programmable signal propagation paradigm, enabled by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), is exploited for high accuracy $3$-Dimensional (3D) user localization with a single multi-antenna base station. Capitalizing on the tunable reflection capability of passive RISs, we present a two-stage user localization method leveraging the multi-reflection wireless environment. Hybrid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (HRISs), which are capable of simultaneous programmable reflections and sensing, are expected to play a significant role in future wireless networks, enabling various Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) applications. The recent research in the emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has identified its high potential for localization and sensing. However, to accurately localize a user placed in the area of influence of an RIS, the RIS location needs to be known a priori and its phase profile is required to be optimized for localization. In this paper, we study the problem of the joint localization of a hybrid RIS (HRIS) and a user, considering that the former is equipped with a single reception radio-frequency (RF) chain enabling simultaneous tunable reflections and sensing via power splitting. Focusing on the downlink of a multi-antenna base station, we present a multi-stage approach for the estimation of the HRIS position and orientation as well as the user position. Our simulation results, including comparisons with the Cram\'er-Rao lower bounds, demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed localization approach, while showcasing that there exists an optimal HRIS power splitting ratio for the desired multi-parameter estimation problem.

Hybrid relaying networks (HRNs) combining both a relay and an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) can lead to enhanced rate performance compared to non-hybrid relaying schemes, where only either an IRS or a relay is utilized. However, utilizing both the relay and the IRS simultaneously results in higher power consumption for the HRNs compared to their counterpart. In this work, we study the required transmit power levels and the energy efficiency (EE) of HRNs utilizing both a half-duplex decode-and-forward (HD-DF) relay and an IRS, and compare their performance with non-hybrid relaying schemes. The impact of the required channel estimation overheads is considered when the reflective beamforming design (RBD) at the IRS is carried out under both instantaneous and statistical channel state information models. Also, the investigation is performed for both slow- and fast-changing environments. In terms of the transmit power requirements, our results show that HRNs can lead to higher power savings if the number of reflective elements at the IRS is not very large. However, non-hybrid relaying schemes are shown to be more energy-efficient, unless the targeted rate is high and the IRS is distant from both transmitter and receiver but within a close proximity to the relay.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as an essential enabling technique for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication network. Specifically, an RIS is comprised of a large number of small and low-cost reflecting elements whose parameters are dynamically adjustable with a programmable controller. Each of these elements can effectively reflect a phase-shifted version of the incident electromagnetic wave. By adjusting the wave phases in real time, the propagation environment of the reflected signals can be dynamically reconfigured to enhance communication reliability, boost transmission rate, expand cellular coverage, and strengthen communication security. In this paper, we provide an overview on RIS-assisted wireless communications. Specifically, we elaborate on the state-of-the-art enabling techniques of RISs as well as their corresponding substantial benefits from the perspectives of RIS reflection and RIS modulation. With these benefits, we envision the integration of RIS into emerging applications for 6G. In addition, communication security is of unprecedented importance in the 6G network with ubiquitous wireless services in multifarious verticals and areas. We highlight potential contributions of RIS to physical-layer security in terms of secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability, exemplified by a typical case study from both theoretical and numerical aspects. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), comprising large numbers of low-cost and almost passive metamaterials with tunable reflection properties, have been recently proposed as an enabling technology for programmable wireless propagation environments. In this paper, we present asymptotic closed-form expressions for the mean and variance of the mutual information metric for a multi-antenna transmitter-receiver pair in the presence of multiple RISs, using methods from statistical physics. While nominally valid in the large system limit, we show that the derived Gaussian approximation for the mutual information can be quite accurate, even for modest-sized antenna arrays and metasurfaces. The above results are particularly useful when fast-fading conditions are present, which renders instantaneous channel estimation extremely challenging. We find that, when the channel close to an RIS is correlated, for instance due to small angle spread, which is reasonable for wireless systems with increasing carrier frequencies, the communication link benefits significantly from statistical RIS phase optimization, resulting in gains that are surprisingly higher than the nearly uncorrelated case. Using our novel asymptotic properties of the correlation matrices of the impinging and outgoing signals at the RISs, we can optimize the metasurfaces without brute-force numerical optimization. The envisioned sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks will involve an intelligent integration of communications and computing, thereby meeting the urgent demands of diverse applications. To realize the concept of the smart radio environment, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are a promising technology for offering programmable propagation of impinging electromagnetic signals via external control. However, the purely reflective nature of conventional RISs induces significant challenges in supporting computation-based applications, e.g., wave-based calculation and signal processing. To fulfil future communication and computing requirements, new materials are needed to complement the existing technologies of metasurfaces, enabling further diversification of electronics and their applications. In this event, we introduce the concept of reconfigurable intelligent computational surface (RICS), which is composed of two reconfigurable multifunctional layers: the `reconfigurable beamforming layer' which is responsible for tunable signal reflection, absorption, and refraction, and the `intelligence computation layer' that concentrates on metamaterials-based computing. By exploring the recent trends on computational metamaterials, RICSs have the potential to make joint communication and computation a reality. We further demonstrate two typical applications of RICSs for performing wireless spectrum sensing and secrecy signal processing. Future research challenges arising from the design and operation of RICSs are finally highlighted.

The technology of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) has lately attracted considerable interest from both academia and industry as a low-cost solution for coverage extension and signal propagation control. In this paper, we study the downlink of a multi-cell wideband communication system comprising single-antenna Base Stations (BSs) and their associated single-antenna users, as well as multiple passive RISs. We assume that each BS controls a separate RIS and performs Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions. Differently from various previous works where the RIS unit elements are considered as frequency-flat phase shifters, we model them as Lorentzian resonators and present a joint design of the BSs' power allocation, as well as the phase profiles of the multiple RISs, targeting the sum-rate maximization of the multi-cell system. We formulate a challenging distributed nonconvex optimization problem, which is solved via successive concave approximation. Simultaneously transmitting (refracting) and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) have been recently identified to improve the spectrum/energy efficiency and extend the communication range. However, their potential for enhanced concurrent indoor and outdoor localization has not yet been explored. In this paper, we study the fundamental limits, i.e., the Cram\'er Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) via Fisher information analyses, on the three-dimensional (3D) localization performance with a STAR-RIS at millimeter wave frequencies. The effect of the power splitting between refraction and reflection at the STAR-RIS as well as the power allocation between the two mobile stations (MSs) are investigated. By maximizing the principal angle between the two subspaces corresponding to the STAR-RIS reflection and refraction matrices, we are able to find the optimal solutions for these simultaneous operations. Late visions and trends for the future sixth Generation (6G) of wireless communications advocate, among other technologies, towards the deployment of network nodes with extreme numbers of antennas and up to terahertz frequencies, as means to enable various immersive applications. However, these technologies impose several challenges in the design of radio-frequency front-ends and beamforming architectures, as well as of ultra-wideband waveforms and computationally efficient transceiver signal processing. In this article, we revisit the Time Reversal (TR) technique, which was initially experimented in acoustics, in the context of large-bandwidth 6G wireless communications, capitalizing on its high resolution spatiotemporal focusing realized with low complexity transceivers. We first overview representative state-of-the-art in TR-based wireless communications, identifying the key competencies and requirements of TR for efficient operation. Recent and novel experimental setups and results for the spatiotemporal focusing capability of TR at the carrier frequencies $2.5$, $36$, and $273$ GHz are then presented, demonstrating in quantitative ways the technique's effectiveness in these very different frequency bands, as well as the roles of the available bandwidth and the number of transmit antennas. We also showcase the TR potential for realizing low complexity multi-user communications. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to play a key role in future wireless communications, enabling programmable radio propagation environments. They are usually considered as almost passive planar structures that operate as adjustable reflectors, giving rise to a multitude of implementation challenges, including the inherent difficulty in estimating the underlying wireless channels. In this paper, we focus on the recently conceived concept of Hybrid Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (HRISs), which do not solely reflect the impinging waveform in a controllable fashion, but are also capable of sensing and processing an adjustable portion of it. We first present implementation details for this metasurface architecture and propose a convenient mathematical model for characterizing its dual operation. As an indicative application of HRISs in wireless communications, we formulate the individual channel estimation problem for the uplink of a multi-user HRIS-empowered communication system. Considering first a noise-free setting, we theoretically quantify the advantage of HRISs in notably reducing the amount of pilots needed for channel estimation, as compared to the case of purely reflective RISs. We then present closed-form expressions for the MSE performance in estimating the individual channels at the HRISs and the base station for the noisy model. Based on these derivations, we propose an automatic differentiation-based first-order optimization approach to efficiently determine the HRIS phase and power splitting configurations for minimizing the weighted sum-MSE performance. In this paper, we present an Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) system enabled by in-band Full Duplex (FD) radios, where a massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) base station equipped with hybrid Analog and Digital (A/D) beamformers is communicating with multiple DownLink (DL) users, and simultaneously estimates via the same signaling waveforms the Direction of Arrival (DoA) as well as the range of radar targets randomly distributed within its coverage area. Capitalizing on a recent reduced-complexity FD hybrid A/D beamforming architecture, we devise a joint radar target tracking and DL data transmission protocol. An optimization framework for the joint design of the massive A/D beamformers and the Self-Interference (SI) cancellation unit, with the dual objective of maximizing the radar tracking accuracy and DL communication performance, is presented. Our simulation results at millimeter wave frequencies using 5G NR wideband waveforms, showcase the accuracy of the radar target tracking performance of the proposed system, which simultaneously offers increased sum rate compared with benchmark schemes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. The increasingly demanding objectives for next generation wireless communications have spurred recent research activities on multi-antenna transceiver hardware architectures and relevant intelligent communication schemes. Among them belong the Full Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) architectures, which offer the potential for simultaneous uplink and downlink operations in the entire frequency band. However, as the number of antenna elements increases, the interference signal leaking from the transmitter of the FD radio to its receiver becomes more severe. In this article, we present a unified FD massive MIMO architecture comprising analog and digital transmit and receive BeamForming (BF), as well as analog and digital SI cancellation, which can be jointly optimized for various performance objectives and complexity requirements. Performance evaluation results for applications of the proposed architecture to fully digital and hybrid analog and digital BF operations using recent algorithmic designs, as well as simultaneous communication of data and control signals are presented. It is shown that the proposed architecture, for both small and large numbers of antennas, enables improved spectral efficiency FD communications with fewer analog cancellation elements compared to various benchmark schemes.
