Science - Abstract
Abstract Monoamines like serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline/noradrenaline (epinephrine/norepinephrine) act as neuromodulators in the nervous system. They play a role in complex behaviours, cognitive functions such as learning and memory formation, as well as fundamental homeostatic processes such as sleep and feeding. However, the evolutionary origin of the genes required for monoaminergic modulation is uncertain. Using a phylogenomic approach, in this study, we show that most of the genes involved in monoamine production, modulation, and reception originated in the bilaterian stem group. This suggests that the monoaminergic system is a bilaterian novelty and that its evolution may have contributed to the Cambrian diversification.

In this study, a mixed porcine–human bioengineered liver (MPH-BEL) was used in a preclinical setup of extracorporeal liver support devices as a treatment for a model of post-resection liver failure (PRLF). The potential for human clinical application is further illustrated by comparing the functional capacity of MPH-BEL grafts as assessed using this porcine PRLF model with fully human (FH-BEL) grafts which were perfused and assessed in vitro. BEL grafts were produced by reseeding liver scaffolds with HUVEC and primary porcine hepatocytes (MPH-BEL) or primary human hepatocytes (FH-BEL). PRLF was induced by performing an 85% liver resection in domestic white pigs and randomized into the following three groups 24 h after resection: standard medical therapy (SMT) alone, SMT + extracorporeal circuit (ECC), and SMT + MPH-BEL. The detoxification and metabolic functions of the MPH-BEL grafts were compared to FH-BEL grafts which were perfused in vitro. During the 24 h treatment interval, INR values normalized within 18 h in the MPH-BEL therapy group and urea synthesis increased as compared to the SMT and SMT + ECC control groups. The MPH-BEL treatment was associated with more rapid decline in hematocrit and platelet count compared to both control groups. Histological analysis demonstrated platelet sequestration in the MPH-BEL grafts, possibly related to immune activation. Significantly higher rates of ammonia clearance and metabolic function were observed in the FH-BEL grafts perfused in vitro than in the MPH-BEL grafts. The MPH-BEL treatment was associated with improved markers of liver function in PRLF. Further improvement in liver function in the BEL grafts was observed by seeding the biomatrix with human hepatocytes. Methods to reduce platelet sequestration within BEL grafts is an area of ongoing research.

NASH ,skin evaluation system ,large animal model ,microbiome ,dermatitis ,Microbiology ,QR1-502 - Abstract
IntroductionThe development of animal models of chronic liver disease via diet modification is a promising avenue for translational research but can lead to unexpected side effects that impact model adoption. While these side effects are well characterized in rodent models of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), limited knowledge of these effects exists for novel porcine models of NASH. To close this gap, the present study investigates the side effects of diet-based NASH induction in pigs, with a systematic analysis of the pathologic mechanisms underlying dermatitis development and evaluation of treatment approaches.MethodTwelve pigs (10 large domestic pigs, 2 Goettingen minipigs) were fed a methionine- and choline-deficient, high-fat diet for 8 weeks to induce NASH. A retrospective review of each animal’s clinical record was performed to identify the side effects of the diet. Following the identification of diet-associated dermatitis, severity was judged by using a novel gradation system that characterized the individual lesions and body regions resulting in a cumulative evaluation. In addition to this clinical assessment, the etiology of the dermatitis was investigated via histopathologic and microbiologic testing. Furthermore, the success of prophylactic and therapeutic treatment approaches was evaluated by considering dermatitis development and clinical course.ResultsAll study animals demonstrated unexpected side effects of the methionine- and choline-deficient, high fat diet. In addition to marked dermatitis, study pigs showed impaired weight gain and developed steatorrhea and anemia. Based on the skin gradation system, five animals developed severe dermatitis, four animals moderate dermatitis, and three animals mild diet-associated dermatitis. Histological and microbiological evaluation of the affected skin showed signs of a hypersensitivity reaction with secondary infection by bacteria and fungi. The analysis showed that preemptive bathing extended the lesion-free duration by nearly 20 days. Furthermore, bathing in combination with a targeted antibiotic treatment represented a helpful treatment approach for diet-associated dermatitis.ConclusionThe provision of a methionine- and choline-deficient, high fat diet represents an effective approach for inducing NASH liver disease in pigs but predisposes study animals to multiple side effects. These side effects are universal to animals on study but can be adequately managed and do not represent a significant limitation of this model.

We demonstrate single-pixel imaging in the spectral domain by encoding Fourier probe patterns onto the spectrum of a superluminescent laser diode using a programmable optical filter. As a proof-of-concept, we measure the wavelength-dependent transmission of a Michelson interferometer and a wavelength-division multiplexer. Our results open new perspectives for remote broadband measurements with possible applications in industrial, biological or security applications.

This study documented existing knowledge on traditional fruits, vegetables and pulses in Kenya and Ethiopia. The aim was to identify neglected and underutilized species with high potential for food security, for their economic value and contribution to sustainable agriculture, based on a literature review and confirmation of existing data by local experts. In order of priority, the top 5 fruit species in Kenya are Tamarindus indica L., Adansonia digitata L., Sclerocarya birrea (A.Rich.) Hochst, Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile, and Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., for vegetables are Amaranthus spp., Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., Solanum spp., and Cleome gynandra L. Top fruits in Ethiopia are Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile, Ziziphus spina-christi (L.) Desf., Cordeauxia edulis Hemsl., Cordia africana Lam., and Mimusops kummel A. DC., for vegetables are Brassica carinata A. Braun, Cucurbita pepo L., and Amaranthus spp. In both countries, priority pulse species (no ranking) are Phaseolus lunatus L., Sphenostylis stenocarpa (A.Rich.) Harms, Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC., Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet, and Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. Generally, these priority species are good sources of key nutrients known for their inadequate dietary intakes in sub-Saharan Africa, represent a safety net for household income, and contribute positively to ecosystem resilience in existing agricultural systems. Complete, accurate and reliable nutrient composition data are needed to raise consumer awareness about their nutritional and health benefits. Since women play a central role in traditional food systems, their empowerment, and hence resilience, increase the positive impact they can have on the households’ dietary diversity. In particular, introducing small-scale processing techniques and marketing strategies could enhance their supply and consumption.

Language and Literature - Abstract
Morphological databases play an important role in linguistic research today. While several exist for the study of inflectional morphology in French, there is still a lack of resources for derivational morphology. This article presents Démonette-2, a new release of the French derivational morphology database Démonette. Developed in the context of the Démonext project, this database provides a framework in which it is possible to integrate various existing derivational resources. Démonette is characterized by its relational nature, which makes it possible to describe an extensive set of word formation patterns, including suffixation, prefixation, and a variety of non-canonical derivational processes such as conversion and parasynthetic formations. It reconciles broad coverage and fine-grained descriptions and is suitable for different audiences: morphologists working in different theoretical frameworks, teachers, speech therapists, NLP specialists, etc. The article presents in detail the structure and content of Démonette, its evolution since the first version, and its query interface.

Computer Science - Networking and Internet Architecture - Abstract
FTTO means Fiber To The Office, in reference to FTTH (Fibre To The Home), deployed in France for individuals. The principle of FTTO is to cable a building totally in fibre optic, to remove as much copper cabling as possible and install microswitches in each office (duct or adjacent), as near the machines as possible. Users are still connected with standard RJ45 copper wiring. Through questions and answers, we will highlight the reasons why FFTO is a controlled and future-oriented technology.Over the last six years, several building projects within the perimeter of Higher Education and Research have chosen this technology and have seen or will see the light of day. Depending on the project, different topologies and technologies are possible. What is the feedback after these years? Is the result as expected? How is the solution experienced on a day-to-day basis? What security, how is a large switch assembly configured and maintained, what high availability is possible? How is Wi-Fi, IP telephony and all PoE devices integrated? Does FTTO contribute to eco-consumption? How can a FTTO call for tender be set up for a project, what are the essential elements to be included and what are the errors to be avoided at all costs? In the future, what is the life expectancy for its infrastructure and what speeds can be envisaged? The RESINFO FTTO Group is working to provide clear answers to all these questions and to share its experience with the community., Comment: Vid{\'e}o https://replay.jres.org/videos/watch/6de5f575-9da1-4cb7-82af-f3f90aca9b6e Congr\`es , in French, JRES : Les Journ\'ees R\'eseaux de l'Enseignement et de la Recherche, RENATER, Dec 2019, Dijon, France

Skew-gentle algebras are skew-group algebras of gentle algebras equipped with a certain $\Z_2$-action. Building on the bijective correspondence between gentle algebras and dissected surfaces, we obtain in this paper a bijection between skew-gentle algebras and certain dissected orbifolds that admit a double cover. We prove the compatibility of the $\Z_2$-action on the double cover with the skew-group algebra construction. This allows us to investigate the derived equivalence relation between skew-gentle algebras in geometric terms: We associate to each skew-gentle algebra a line field on the orbifold, and on its double cover, and interpret different kinds of derived equivalences of skew-gentle algebras in terms of diffeomorphisms respecting the homotopy class of the line fields associated to the algebras., Comment: 46 pages

Gentle algebras are in bijection with admissible dissections of marked oriented surfaces. In this paper, we further study the properties of admissible dissections and we show that silting objects for gentle algebras are given by admissible dissections of the associated surface. We associate to each gentle algebra a line field on the corresponding surface and prove that the derived equivalence class of the algebra is completely determined by the homotopy class of the line field up to homeomorphism of the surface. Then, based on winding numbers and the Arf invariant of a certain quadratic form over $\mathbb Z_2$, we translate this to a numerical complete derived invariant for gentle algebras., Comment: 26 pages. v2: enhanced introduction. v3: updated references

The pathophysiology of acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19 patients is still poorly understood. SARS-CoV-2 has been suggested to modulate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). In this series of COVID-19 critically ill patients, we report evidence of activation of the RAAS in COVID-19 patients with AKI.

Abstract People cooperate every day in ways that range from largescale contributions that mitigate climate change to simple actions such as leaving another individual with choice – known as social mindfulness. It is not yet clear whether and how these complex and more simple forms of cooperation relate. Prior work has found that countries with individuals who made more socially mindful choices were linked to a higher country environmental performance – a proxy for complex cooperation. Here we replicated this initial finding in 41 samples around the world, demonstrating the robustness of the association between social mindfulness and environmental performance, and substantially built on it to show this relationship extended to a wide range of complex cooperative indices, tied closely to many current societal issues. We found that greater social mindfulness expressed by an individual was related to living in countries with more social capital, more community participation and reduced prejudice towards immigrants. Our findings speak to the symbiotic relationship between simple and more complex forms of cooperation in societies.

IntroductionPoor food intake is common among elderly living in nursing homes, leading to micronutrient deficiency (MD). There are no recommendations for the management of MD in malnourished older adults.MethodsWe conducted a single arm, open-label, multicenter interventional study in institutionalized malnourished older adults to describe the effect of a 4-week daily energy and protein dense oral nutritional supplementation (ONS, 600 kcal, 30 g protein per unit) containing 50% of the recommended daily micronutrient intake on micronutrient status. Plasma concentrations of vitamins (A, B9, B12, C, E), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), and erythrocyte vitamin B9 were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks.ResultsForty-six participants completed the study (age 87.4 ± 6.6). At baseline, the most frequent MD were Se (48%), Zn (35%), Mg (24%) and vitamin C (24%). Plasma concentrations of vitamins B9, B12, C and E, Mg, Se and Zn significantly increased and the proportion of subjects with at least one MD decreased (p = 0.006). However, after 4 weeks, 40% of subjects still had at least one MD.DiscussionONS consumption improved micronutrient status but did not correct MD in all participants. Our data suggest that the prescription of vitamin, mineral and trace element supplementation should be considered in institutionalized malnourished older adults in addition to high energy and high protein ONS.

We demonstrate experimentally ghost optical coherence tomography using a broadband incoherent supercontinuum light source with shot-to-shot random spectral fluctuations. The technique is based on ghost imaging in the spectral domain where the object is the spectral interference pattern generated from an optical coherence tomography interferometer in which a physical sample is placed. The image of the sample is obtained from the Fourier transform of the correlation between the spectrally-resolved intensity fluctuations of the supercontinuum and the integrated signal measured at the output of the interferometer. The results are in excellent agreement with measurements obtained from a conventional optical coherence tomography system.

We demonstrate cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy in the mid-infrared using a supercontinuum source. The approach is broadband, compact, and allows for higher photoacoustic signal intensity and enhanced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to systems employing conventional back body radiation sources. Using this technique, we perform spectroscopic measurements of the full ro-vibrational band structure of water vapor at 1900 nm and methane at 3300 nm with relative signal enhancement factors of 70 and 19, respectively, when compared to measurements that use a black body radiation source. Our results offer novel perspective for photoacoustic detection opening the door to compact and sensitive broadband analyzers in the mid-infrared spectral region.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
Ghost imaging is an unconventional imaging technique that generates high resolution images by correlating the intensity of two light beams, neither of which independently contains useful information about the shape of the object. Ghost imaging has great potential to provide robust imaging solutions in the presence of severe environmental perturbations, and has been demonstrated both in the spatial and temporal domains . Here, we exploit recent progress in ultrafast real-time measurement techniques to demonstrate ghost imaging in the frequency domain using a continuous spectrum from an incoherent supercontinuum (SC) light source. We demonstrate the particular application of this ghost imaging technique to broadband spectroscopic measurements of methane absorption, and our results offer novel perspectives for remote sensing in low light conditions, or in spectral regions where sensitive detectors are lacking.
