Abstract

We present a hierarchical basis preconditioning strategy for the Poggio-Miller-Chang-Harrington-Wu-Tsai (PMCHWT) integral equation considering both simply and multiply connected geometries.To this end, we first consider the direct application of hierarchical basis preconditioners, developed for the Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE), to the PMCHWT. It is notably found that, whereas for the EFIE a diagonal preconditioner can be used for obtaining the hierarchical basis scaling factors, this strategy is catastrophic in the case of the PMCHWT since it leads to a severly ill-conditioned PMCHWT system in the case of multiply connected geometries. We then proceed to a theoretical analysis of the effect of hierarchical bases on the PMCHWT operator for which we obtain the correct scaling factors and a provably effective preconditioner for both low frequencies and mesh refinements. Numerical results will corroborate the theory and show the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract

In this contribution, a discretisation of the IBC EFIE is introduced that (i) yields the correct solution at arbitrarily small frequencies, (ii) requires for its solution a number of matrix vector products bounded as the frequency tends to zero and as the mesh density increases. The low frequency stabilisation is based on a projector-based discrete Helmholtz splitting, rescaling, and recombination that depends on the low frequency behaviour of both the EFIE operator and the surface impedance condition. The dense mesh stabilisation is a modifcation of the Perfect Electric Conductor operator preconditioning approach taking into account the effect on the singular value spectrum of the IBC term.

Abstract

In this paper we present a new discretization strategy for the boundary element formulation of the Electroencephalography (EEG) forward problem. Boundary integral formulations, classically solved with the Boundary Element Method (BEM), are widely used in high resolution EEG imaging because of their recognized advantages in several real case scenarios. Unfortunately however, it is widely reported that the accuracy of standard BEM schemes is limited, especially when the current source density is dipolar and its location approaches one of the brain boundary surfaces. This is a particularly limiting problem given that during an high-resolution EEG imaging procedure, several EEG forward problem solutions are required for which the source currents are near or on top of a boundary surface. This work will first present an analysis of standardly discretized EEG forward problems, reporting on a theoretical issue of some of the formulations that have been used so far in the community. We report on the fact that several standardly used discretizations requires the expansion term to be a square integrable function. Instead, those techniques are not consistent when a more appropriate mapping is considered. Such a mapping allows the expansion function term to be a less regular function, thus sensibly reducing the need for mesh refinements and low-precisions handling strategies that are currently required. These mappings, however, require a different and conforming discretization which must be suitably adapted to them. To do this we adopt a mixed discretization based on dual boundary elements residing on a suitably defined dual mesh. Finally we show how the resulting EEG problems has favorable properties with respect to previously proposed schemes and we show their applicability to real case modeling scenarios obtained from MRI data.

61. On the Use of Quasi-Helmholtz Projectors for Modeling Structures With Junctions at Arbitrarily Low Frequencies

Abstract

This work investigates the usage of quasi-Helmholtz projectors to cure the low frequency breakdown of the electric field integral equation (EFIE) when modeling structures containing junctions. We show that the quasi-Helmholtz projectors can still efficiently perform projection into the solenoidal and nonsolenoidal subspaces in the presence of junctions. Preconditioning strategies leveraging these projectors are capable of curing the low-frequency breakdown that severely compromises the accuracy and conditioning of the EFIE. Numerical studies validate the use of algebraic multigrid approaches for achieving fast and efficient implementation of the proposed scheme for problems with multiple junctions. The effectiveness of the scheme and its applicability to problems of industrial relevance is illustrated through a series of numerical results.

62. Constrained Pseudoinverses for the Electromagnetic Inverse Source Problem

Abstract

Inverse source strategies have proven to be quite relevant for several applications in advanced electromagnetics. These schemes are based on the solution of ill-posed problems in which current or near-field distributions are reconstructed from far-field (or from less informative field) information. Standard strategies, that can include physical constraints such as Love conditions, often rely on standard pseudoinverse definitions and yield solutions that are, at times, far from the physical ones. This work proposes a different approach focusing on defining and analyzing a new family of pseudoinverses that takes advantage of small-in-dimension subspaces containing a priori information. The new solutions returned by the new pseudoinverses will be a suitable average between a solution living entirely in the vector space containing the a priori information and a solution obtained via norm-minimizing approaches. The contribution presents both theoretical analyses and numerical experiments showing the practical effectiveness of the novel mathematical tool.

Abstract

This work presents a Boundary Element Method (BEM) formulation for contactless electromagnetic field assessments. The new scheme is based on a regularized BEM approach that requires the use of electric measurements only. The regularization is obtained by leveraging on an extension of Calderon techniques to rectangular systems leading to well-conditioned problems independent of the discretization density. This enables the use of highly discretized Huygens surfaces that can be consequently placed very near to the radiating source. In addition, the new regularized scheme is hybridized with both surfacic homogeneous and volumetric inhomogeneous forward BEM solvers accelerated with fast matrix-vector multiplication schemes. This allows for rapid and effective dosimetric assessments and permits the use of inhomogeneous and realistic head phantoms. Numerical results corroborate the theory and confirms the practical effectiveness of all newly proposed formulations.

Abstract

This paper analyzes how hierarchical bases preconditioners constructed for the Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE) can be effectively applied to the Combined Field Integral Equation (CFIE). For the case where no hierarchical solenoidal basis is available (e.g., on unstructured meshes), a new scheme is proposed: the CFIE is implicitly preconditioned on the solenoidal Helmholtz subspace by using a Helmholtz projector, while a hierarchical non-solenoidal basis is used for the non-solenoidal Helmholtz subspace. This results in a well-conditioned system. Numerical results corroborate the presented theory.

Abstract

Integral equation formulations are a competitive strategy in computational electromagnetics but, lamentably, are often plagued by ill-conditioning and by related numerical instabilities that can jeopardize their effectiveness in several real case scenarios. Luckily, however, it is possible to leverage effective preconditioning and regularization strategies that can cure a large majority of these problems. Not surprisingly, integral equation preconditioning is currently a quite active field of research. To give the reader a propositive overview of the state of the art, this paper will review and discuss the main advancements in the field of integral equation preconditioning in electromagnetics summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of each technique. The contribution will guide the reader through the choices of the right preconditioner for a given application scenario. This will be complemented by new analyses and discussions which will provide a further and more intuitive understanding of the ill-conditioning of the electric field (EFIE), magnetic field (MFIE), and combined field integral equation (CFIE) and of the associated remedies.

Abstract

Although 21 pancreatic cancer susceptibility loci have been identified in individuals of European ancestry through genome-wide association studies (GWASs), much of the heritability of pancreatic cancer risk remains unidentified. A recessive genetic model could be a powerful tool for identifying additional risk variants. To discover recessively inherited pancreatic cancer risk loci, we performed a re-analysis of the largest pancreatic cancer GWAS, the Pancreatic Cancer Cohort Consortium (PanScan) and the Pancreatic Cancer Case-Control Consortium (PanC4), including 8,769 cases and 7,055 controls of European ancestry. Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed associations with pancreatic cancer risk according to a recessive model of inheritance. We replicated these variants in 3,212 cases and 3,470 controls collected from the PANcreatic Disease ReseArch (PANDoRA) consortium. The results of the meta-analyses confirmed that rs4626538 (7q32.2), rs7008921 (8p23.2) and rs147904962 (17q21.31) showed specific recessive effects (p10−3), although none of the six SNPs reached the conventional threshold for genome-wide significance (p < 5×10−8). Additional bioinformatic analysis explored the functional annotations of the SNPs and indicated a possible relationship between rs36018702 and expression of the BCL2L11 and BUB1 genes, which are known to be involved in pancreatic biology. Our findings, while not conclusive, indicate the importance of considering non-additive genetic models when performing GWAS analysis. The SNPs associated with pancreatic cancer in this study could be used for further meta-analysis for recessive association of SNPs and pancreatic cancer risk and might be a useful addiction to improve the performance of polygenic risk scores.

Abstract

The accurate solution of quasi-Helmholtz decomposed electric field integral equations (EFIEs) in the presence of arbitrary excitations is addressed: Depending on the specific excitation, the quasi-Helmholtz components of the induced current density do not have the same asymptotic scaling in frequency, and thus, the current components are solved for with, in general, different relative accuracies. In order to ensure the same asymptotic scaling, we propose a frequency normalization scheme of quasi-Helmholtz decomposed EFIEs which adapts itself to the excitation and which is valid irrespective of the specific excitation and irrespective of the underlying topology of the structure. Specifically, neither an ad-hoc adaption nor a-priori information about the excitation is needed as the scaling factors are derived based on the norms of the right-hand side (RHS) components and the frequency. Numerical results corroborate the presented theory and show the effectiveness of our approach.

95. Clinical Significance of Circulating miR-1273g-3p and miR-122-5p in Pancreatic Cancer

Abstract

The burden of pancreatic cancer (PanC) requires innovation in the current diagnostic approach. This study aimed to uncover new circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) that would distinguish patients with PanC from healthy subjects (HS) compared with the cancer antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), and predict patients' clinical phenotypes and outcomes. MiRNA expression profiles in plasma were investigated by using a two-stage process. In a discovery phase, miRNAs levels were analyzed using the GeneChip™ miRNA 4.0 Affymetrix assay in 10 pools of plasma samples from PanC patients and HS; in a validation phase, significantly altered miRNAs were re-tested in independent cohorts of cancer patients and controls by droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). The diagnostic performance of the resulting miRNAs was compared to CA 19-9 determinations, and the associations of miRNAs plasma levels with patients' clinical phenotypes and outcomes were also taken into account. Bioinformatics selection of miRNAs differentially expressed in plasma uncovered miR-18a-5p, miR-122-5p, miR-1273g-3p, and miR-6126 as candidate oncogenic miRNAs in PanC. The ddPCR technology confirmed the significant over-expression of miR-122-5p, miR-1273g-3p, and miR-6126 in PanC compared to HS, in line with the trend of the CA 19-9 levels. Plasma levels of miR-1273g-3p, in combination with CA 19-9, showed higher power in distinguishing PanC patients from HS compared to the CA 19-9 tested alone, with a gain in both sensitivity and negative predictive value indicating a low false-negative rate (SE = 90.2% and NPV = 92.3% vs. SE = 82.1% and NPV = 87.9%). None of the oncogenic miRNAs were able to distinguish between a neoplastic and a proliferative/inflammatory disease of the pancreas, and were not able to stratify subjects according to the clinical risk for the disease. The only valuable association in PanC patients was found between miR-1273g-3p and tumor stage, and increased miR-122-5p levels emerged as independent negative prognostic factor for PanC patients (HR = 1.58, 95% CI = 1.03–2.43, p = 0.037). Our data highlighted a role for circulating miR-1273g-3p and miR-122-5p as new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for PanC.

Abstract

This study investigates the preliminary propulsive performances of a cathode-less plasma thruster with air as its propellant. The analysis is carried out through a global model and simulates a thruster over a power range of 0 to 50 W. The developed code considers a set of 177 chemical reactions involving 8 different species and includes empirical equations to account for electronegative effects. The analysis presents the steady-state values of species densities at 10 W, 30 W, and 50 W to gain insights into the key characteristics of plasma dynamics. Moreover, the study estimates the thrust and specific impulse and compares the results to data from models that employ xenon and iodine, aiming to understand the performances of air in low-power thrusters. Lastly, the study examines the effects of varying air inflow concentration on the chemistry, analyzing three different orbit altitudes (i.e., 200, 300, and 400 km).

Abstract Cancer is a major health burden worldwide, and despite continuous advances in medical therapies, resistance to standard drugs and adverse effects still represent an important cause of therapeutic failure. There is a growing evidence that gut bacteria can affect the response to chemo- and immunotherapeutic drugs by modulating either efficacy or toxicity. Moreover, intratumor bacteria have been shown to modulate chemotherapy response. At the same time, anticancer treatments themselves significantly affect the microbiota composition, thus disrupting homeostasis and exacerbating discomfort to the patient. Here, we review the existing knowledge concerning the role of the microbiota in mediating chemo- and immunotherapy efficacy and toxicity and the ability of these therapeutic options to trigger dysbiotic condition contributing to the severity of side effects. In addition, we discuss the use of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, and antibiotics as emerging strategies for manipulating the microbiota in order to improve therapeutic outcome or at least ensure patients a better quality of life all along of anticancer treatments.
