The role of electrokinetics in the spontaneous motion of platinum-gold nanorods suspended in hydrogen peroxide ([H.sub.2][O.sub.2]) solutions that might arise from the bimetallic electrochemical decomposition of [H.sub.2][O.sub.2] is investigated. The results have indicated that the motion of PtAu nanorods in [H.sub.2][O.sub.2] is due to the catalytically induced electrokinetic phenomenon and those other mechanisms, such as those related to interfacial tension gradients, plays a minor role.

63. Bergmann's rule and the thrifty genotype

One of Roberts' key contributions was his work demonstrating the applicability of several ecological rules to human populations (Roberts [1953] Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 11:533-558; [1978] Climate and Human Variability, 2nd ed., Menlo Park, CA: Cummings). His finding that average body weight systematically covaries with mean annual temperature was widely taken as confirmation of Bergmann's rule for humans. More recently his findings on weight and temperature have been extended and confirmed (Ruff [1994] Yrbk. Phys. Anthropol. 37:65-407; Katzmarzyk and Leonard [1995] Hum Biol Council Program Abstracts 132) although the strength of the association may be decreasing when considering more recent surveys (Katzmarzyk and Leonard [1995]). Roberts noted in 1953 that Oceanic populations may be somewhat of an exception to Bergmann's rule, and we propose that Neel's ([1962] Am. J. Hum. Genet. 14:353-362) thrifty genotype model may account for some of the deviation from predicted weights among these populations. We provide an updated version of the thrifty genotype model, suggesting that selection for energetic efficiency may have occurred for some Oceanic populations during the voyaging to and settlement of their island homes. Under conditions of modernization the thrifty genotype may be manifesting as high rates of obesity and NIDDM among Polynesians and Micronesians. First, using measurements of adult male weight from 19 Oceanic populations, we demonstrate the extreme nature of their deviation from predicted weight based on Roberts' regression of weight on mean annual temperature. Next, we regress the deviations from predicted weight on NIDDM prevalence for these 19 populations, producing a highly significant regression ([R.sup.2] = 0.46; P < 0.001), consistent with expectations if the thrifty genotype is responsible for the high weights. Urinary catecholamine excretion rates have been used as a cross-culturally valid measure of generalized stress. The purposes of this paper are to examine group differences in catecholamine excretion rates in three Samoan groups who differ in degree of modernization and to compare these findings to rates of norepinephrine and epinephrine excretion in other populations. In 1986-1987, 24-hr urine samples were collected from 18-37-year-old Samoans; 46 rural Western Samoan villagers, 53 American Samoans, and 49 Samoans residing in Honolulu. The results show that norepinephrine excretion is significantly higher in more modernized Samoan groups (P < 0.05), while epinephrine excretion is not significantly different in the three groups. The higher norepinephrine excretion rate in the more modernized Samoan groups may be related to differences in relative work load associated with changes in body weight, work capacity, and work patterns which accompany modernization. Samoan epinephrine excretion rates are relatively high compared to the results of other population studies, while norepinephrine excretion in three Samoan samples ranged from among the lowest rates observed worldwide to among the highest.

- Abstract
We report on a new all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 475-2000 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1]×10-8 Hz/s. Potential signals could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run O1. No gravitational-wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. For completeness, results from the separately published low-frequency search 20-475 Hz are included as well. Our lowest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 is ∼4×10-25 near 170 Hz, while at the high end of our frequency range, we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 1.3×10-24. For a circularly polarized source (most favorable orientation), the smallest upper limit obtained is ∼1.5×10-25. © 2018 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
Data on physical growth were obtained for a sample of 1202 Quechua subjects, aged 2 to 35 years from the district of NuÑoa, Puno, located in the southern highlands (altitude 4000-5500m) of Peru. These data were supplemented by a three-year longitudinal study of 300 subjects, aged 1 to 22 years. The patterns of physical growth of members of the indigenous population of NuÑoa are characterized by (1) late sexual dimorphism, (2) slow and prolonged growth in body size, (3) late and poorly defined adolescent stature spurt in both males and females, and (4) accelerated development in chest size. The socio-economic factors associated with urban-rural and altitude differences appear to be reflected in greater deposition of subcutaneous fat and increased weight but do not seem to influence the development of stature. We suggest the pattern of growth of this population is related to the hypoxic effects of high altitude, and/or reflects a genetic adaptation to such stress. The anthropometric and physiological studies conducted during this and previous studies and the comparative data from Peruvian populations situated at lower altitudes document the specific adaptive response of the chest wall to the hypoxic effects of high altitude.

This article focuses on the historical development of theory, scientific methods, and training in biological anthropology. The beginnings of biological anthropology are generally traced to the development of the medical profession and more specifically to the study of anatomy. As the subject developed into a separate scientific discipline, detailed training in human anatomy remained a firm requirement. This origin in the medical professions with its focus on a single species contrasted sharply with the broader training in most of the other biological sciences. The field of biological anthropology during the first half of the twentieth century remained an almost totally descriptive and taxonomic science. The fact that homo sapiens was morphologically and physiologically a product of evolution was accepted doctrine, hut why the species evolved was not a topic for research. The theoretical position generally accepted in the discipline is reflected in the position of Arthur Keith, who accepted human evolution and admired Charles Darwin but still doubted that Darwinian selection had explained the change.

88. Part one: Determinants of the fertility of Samoan migrants in Hawaii.

Relationships among age at marriage, age at migration, education, ideal number of children, years since marriage and migration, and number of live births in Samoa and Hawaii are analyzed in a cross‐sectional sample of Samoan women currently living in Hawaii. Migration from Samoa to Oahu, Hawaii leads to a shift from a relatively traditional environment to a modern, urbanized setting. The timing of this migration, as well as the characteristics of the female migrants, influences the way in which the migration process affects fertility. Path analysis is used to quantify the interrelationships among the variables for a model which includes the determinants of the number of live births to a female migrant, both before and after migration. Quantification of the model provides preliminary support for the hypothesis that as exposure to a modern, urbanized environment increases, fertility decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Familial correlations of blood pressure corrected for age, sex, and body weight are described in, and compared among, four Samoan samples which differ in exposure to modern life. An initial assessment of the genetic effects on blood pressure variation is performed in the most traditional sample. The juvenile sibling correlation of systolic pressure increases with modernization, whereas the adult sibling systolic correlation decreases with modernization. It is suggested that there is an increased interfamilial and decreased intrafamilial variation in environment as modernization increases. The preliminary estimate of the additive genetic effects, .25, is discussed in terms of the environmental variation in traditional life. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study examines effects of physical activity on plasma total- and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and derived variables in Western Samoan men who differ in rural/urban residence and occupation. Rural agriculturalists have significantly higher HDL cholesterol and HDL:total ratio than men employed in either physically active or physically sedentary occupations in an urban setting. Total cholesterol levels do not vary significantly, but when the differences in HDL cholesterol are accounted for, the means for agriculturalists and active workers are significantly lower than those for sedentary workers who do not play sports. These differences in HDL- and non-HDL-cholesterol levels are consistent with measures of physical activity among the groups. Variation in physical activity due to residence and occupation in Western Samoan men is related to lipoprotein cholesterol levels, but not to total cholesterol levels, and some effects may be secondary to differences in body composition. The article explores the validity of the array of strategies and contributing variables useful in demographic studies for anthropology. This literature review discusses the reasons for the increased interest in the development of anthropology, the relation between demography and cultural anthropology, the developments in descriptive demography, the effects of demography on living human populations, and the details of reconstruction of prehistoric and ethnohistoric populations. The authors to this review conclude that the descriptive demographic studies are still worthwhile, and that if the broad array of contributing factors is understood and controlled for, studies of the relationship between particular independent factors and demographic variables can be profitably explored.

- Abstract
Attempts to understand the causes for phenotypical differences in the biology and behavior of human populations have tended to focus alternatively on genetic, cultural, and natural environmental variables. The relative narrowness of focus in these studies often impedes the development of research design appropriate to the hypothesis and the process of reaching reasonable conclusions. Past research on native high-altitude populations is used first to illustrate the deficiencies of research based on single variables and errors which can occur in conclusions about causal factors when potential genetic contributions are excluded. Analyses of blood pressure data from Samoan modernization studies are used to illustrate the complexity of determining causality in the development of a pathological condition. 99. Volumetric Requirements for Hand Tool Usage1

- Abstract
This paper presents a quantitative description of the volume required to use common hand tools. The volume described, termed the “space envelope”, is for the tool using hand of right-handed subjects. The data were collected on six individuals who had hands at or above the 95th percentile of the military population in length and breadth. The data were obtained by use of a photographic process employing time exposures for each action. This technique provided data comparable to that provided by movie techniques but at a lower cost. The implications of the data for maintenance requirements are also discussed.
