51. Observation of first- and second-order dissipative phase transitions in a two-photon driven Kerr resonator

Abstract

In open quantum systems, first- and second-order dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) can emerge in the thermodynamic limit from the competition between unitary evolution, driving terms, and dissipation. The order of a DPT is defined by the continuity properties of the steady state. Until now, second-order DPTs have predominantly been investigated theoretically, while first-order DPTs have been observed in key experiments based on the theory of the single-photon driven Kerr resonator. We present here the first comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of both first and second-order DPTs in a two-photon (i.e., parametrically) driven Kerr superconducting resonator. Firstly, we characterize the steady state and its main features at the second- and first-order critical points: squeezing below vacuum and coexistence of two phases with different photon numbers, respectively. Then, by continuously monitoring the system along quantum trajectories, we study the non-equilibrium dynamics across the critical points. We witness the hysteresis cycles associated with the first-order DPT and the spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the second-order DPT. Applying the spectral theory of the Liouvillian superoperator, we develop efficient procedures to quantify the critical slowing down associated with the timescales of these processes. When scaling towards the thermodynamic limit, these timescales span five orders of magnitude. Our results corroborate the predictions derived using the Liouvillian theory of DPTs. This work stands as a compelling example of engineering and controlling of criticality in superconducting circuits. Abstract

Hyperspectral unmixing aims at decomposing a given signal into its spectral signatures and its associated fractional abundances. To improve the accuracy of this decomposition, algorithms have included different assumptions depending on the application. The goal of this study is to develop a new unmixing algorithm that can be applied for the calibration of multi-point scintillation dosimeters used in the field of radiation therapy. This new algorithm is based on a non-negative matrix factorization. It incorporates a partial prior knowledge on both the abundances and the endmembers of a given signal. It is shown herein that, following a precise calibration routine, it is possible to use partial prior information about the fractional abundances, as well as on the endmembers, in order to perform a simplified yet precise calibration of these dosimeters. Validation and characterization of this algorithm is made using both simulations and experiments. The experimental validation shows an improvement in accuracy compared to previous algorithms with a mean spectral angle distance (SAD) on the estimated endmembers of 0.0766, leading to an average error of $(0.25 \pm 0.73)$ % on dose measurements., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Abstract The global mean surface temperature is widely studied to monitor climate change. A current debate centers around whether there has been a recent (post-1970s) surge/acceleration in the warming rate. Here we investigate whether an acceleration in the warming rate is detectable from a statistical perspective. We use changepoint models, which are statistical techniques specifically designed for identifying structural changes in time series. Four global mean surface temperature records over 1850–2023 are scrutinized within. Our results show limited evidence for a warming surge; in most surface temperature time series, no change in the warming rate beyond the 1970s is detected despite the breaking record temperatures observed in 2023. As such, we estimate the minimum changes in the warming trend required for a surge to be detectable. Across all datasets, an increase of at least 55% is needed for a warming surge to be detectable at the present time.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Despite good manufacturing practices and rigorous cleaning and sanitizing procedures established in dairy processing plants, microbiological contamination remains the main cause of products being noncompliant or atypical and hence not fit for human consumption. The objective of this study was to isolate, identify, and characterize bacteria, yeasts, and molds associated with substandard dairy products in Canada and to create a collection of reference isolates. In addition to conventional microbiological characterization, each isolate was tested for biofilm-forming ability and susceptibility to heat, antimicrobial agents, and common industrial disinfectants. Among the 105 microbial strains isolated from pasteurized milk, cream, and cheese samples, 24 bacterial isolates, belonging mainly to the genus Pseudomonas, were shown to be moderate or strong biofilm producers in 96-well plates and highly resistant to peracetic acid (100 ppm, 5 min contact time) and sodium hypochlorite (70 ppm, 5 min contact time). In addition, 56 bacterial isolates, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter bugandensis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas spp., were found resistant to ampicillin, fosfomycin or ceftriaxone, while 14 others, such as Bacillus spp. and Macrococcus spp., withstood a heat treatment equivalent to low-temperature, long-time pasteurization (63°C for 30 min). This descriptive study provides new information on potential problematic microorganisms in dairies and will guide the development of novel control strategies intended to prevent and reduce microbiological contamination and the associated economic losses.

Abstract

Abstract South America is experiencing severe impacts from climate change. Although the warming of the subcontinent closely follows the global path, the rise of temperatures has been more pronounced in some regions, which have also seen a parallel increment in the occurrence of droughts and weather conditions associated with enhanced fire risk. Here, we use reanalysis datasets to analyze the progression of the concurring warm, dry, and high fire risk conditions (i.e., dry compounds) since 1971. We show that the frequency of these compound extremes has surged in key South American regions including the northern Amazon, which have seen a 3-fold increase in the number of days per year with extreme fire weather conditions (including high temperatures, dryness, and low humidity). Our results also suggest that the surface temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean modulates the interannual variability of dry compounds in South America. While El Niño enhances the fire risk in the northern Amazon, dry extremes in the Gran Chaco region appear to be more responsive to La Niña.

56. An Online Peer Support Program to Improve Mental Health among University Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Despite recent calls for more peer support initiatives aimed at promoting mental health in postsecondary institutions, those initiatives remain scarce. In this study, a multisite randomized controlled trial was designed to assess the effect of an online peer support intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy using mental health and school indicators. Undergraduate students were recruited in three Canadian universities and randomly assigned to an intervention (n = 54) or a wait-list control group (n = 53). Compared to control participants, those who took part in the program self-reported reduced psychological inflexibility, stress, anxiety and depression, and increased psychological flexibility and well-being. The intervention had no effect on academic satisfaction and engagement. These results were found both in completer and intent-to-treat samples. The findings provide evidence that peer support may be a beneficial adjunct to mental health interventions offered to college and university students.

57. How Did College Students with and without Disabilities Experience the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic? A Stress and Coping Perspective

The COVID-19 pandemic has overturned daily routines across the entire planet. And newly arrived college students in the fall of 2019 were no exception. In addition to adjusting to the college transition, they had to cope with the multiple consequences of the pandemic's first wave (e.g., confinement, quarantine, physical distancing, remote learning, job loss). To date, it is unknown how this experience has affected students, and particularly the most vulnerable. The main objective of this study was to examine, from a stress and coping perspective, how college students with and without disability experienced the first COVID-19 wave. A longitudinal study using online surveys was conducted in a sample of 1,465 students (mean age = 18.2) attending college in the province of Québec (Canada), of whom 42% disclosed a disability (i.e., ADHD, mental health disorder, or learning problem) at college entry. Exposure to COVID-19 varied according to disability type, study region, and study program. After controlling for exposure, students' initial adjustment to college, and high school GPA, students with a disability, and particularly those presenting a mental health disorder, experienced greater stress and had greater difficulty coping with the situation compared to students without a disability. Generally, girls and students attending a college in an urban area were more affected by the pandemic. Results are discussed with a view to designing preventive measures for at-risk students who enter college during a pandemic.

58. Cooking at Home: Correlates of Frequency and Intention in Fifth Graders

Abstract

Cooking at home is associated with health benefits, and 10- and 11-year-old children are capable of participating in meal preparation. However, opportunities for children to cook at home have declined. This study aimed to identify determinants of the frequency and the intention to cook at home in fifth graders using the Theory of Planned Behavior as a framework with quantitative methodology. A total of 241 participants across five elementary schools of the Chaudière-Appalaches region (Quebec, Canada) took part in this correlational study. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Regression analyses led to the identification of determinants of frequency and intention to cook at home. More than two-thirds of participants (69%) declared having cooked at home in the past 7 days. Intention was the only significant variable explaining 18% of the variance for frequency. Intention was determined by perceived behavioral control, attitude, descriptive norms, subjective norms, perceived barriers, being a girl, and normative beliefs, which explain 74% of the variance. Whereas other studies aiming at better understanding children's involvement in meal preparation at home focused on self-efficacy for cooking, this study highlights other behavioral determinants. For example, support from parents appears to be crucial to promote this behavior in this age group. Future research and interventions should be oriented toward determinants such as subjective norms and normative beliefs, and focus on children's autonomy.

Abstract

The topology of the electronic band structure of solids can be described by its Berry curvature distribution across the Brillouin zone. We theoretically introduce and experimentally demonstrate a general methodology based on the measurement of energy- and momentum-resolved optical transition rates, allowing to reveal signatures of Berry curvature texture in reciprocal space. By performing time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of atomically thin WSe$_2$ using polarization-modulated excitations, we demonstrate that excitons become an asset in extracting the quantum geometrical properties of solids. Abstract

Electromagnetic tracking (EMT) shows great potential for automating implant reconstruction in brachytherapy. One of the challenges of this technology is that it does not intrinsically share the same reference frame as the patient's medical imaging. The purpose of this work is to register the reference frames of an EMT-enabled afterloader and a CT scan image of a rigid phantom for quality control of EMT-based implant reconstruction. The geometry of twelve 6F catheters and a tandem and ring gynecological applicator were reconstructed using an EMT sensor attached to an afterloader's check cable. All EMT reconstructions were done in three different environments: disturbance free, CT-on-rails brachytherapy suite and MRI brachytherapy suite. Implants were reconstructed using two acquisition methods: step-and-record and continuous motion. A CT scan of the phantom was obtained and manually reconstructed in the treatment planning system, with the help of the solid model of the applicator. Rigid registration algorithms were used to register EMT and CT scan reference frames using corresponding points from the EMT and CT based reconstructions of the phantom, following three approaches: one gynecological applicator, four catheters inside four calibration plates having and S-shaped path, and four ceramic marbles within the calibration plates. The absolute median deviation from the expected value for EMT measurements in all three environments significantly lie below the sensor's expected accuracy of 0.70 mm (p < 0.001), suggesting that the environment did not have a significant impact on the measurements, given that care is taken in the immediate surroundings. In all three environments, the two acquisition and three registration approaches have a mean and median registration errors (perpendicular distance) that lie at or below 1 mm, which is lower than the clinical acceptable threshold of 2 mm.

Abstract

Embodiment has recently enjoyed renewed consideration as a means to amplify the faculties of smart machines. Proponents of embodiment seem to imply that optimizing for movement in physical space promotes something more than the acquisition of niche capabilities for solving problems in physical space. However, there is nothing in principle which should so distinguish the problem of action selection in physical space from the problem of action selection in more abstract spaces, like that of language. Rather, what makes embodiment persuasive as a means toward higher intelligence is that it promises to capture, but does not actually realize, contingent facts about certain bodies (living intelligence) and the patterns of activity associated with them. These include an active resistance to annihilation and revisable constraints on the processes that make the world intelligible. To be theoretically or practically useful beyond the creation of niche tools, we argue that "embodiment" cannot be the trivial fact of a body, nor its movement through space, but the perpetual negotiation of the function, design, and integrity of that body$\unicode{x2013}$that is, to participate in what it means to $\textit{constitute}$ a given body. It follows that computer programs which are strictly incapable of traversing physical space might, under the right conditions, be more embodied than a walking, talking robot.

65. Proximity and Visuotactile Point Cloud Fusion for Contact Patches in Extreme Deformation

Abstract

Equipping robots with the sense of touch is critical to emulating the capabilities of humans in real world manipulation tasks. Visuotactile sensors are a popular tactile sensing strategy due to data output compatible with computer vision algorithms and accurate, high resolution estimates of local object geometry. However, these sensors struggle to accommodate high deformations of the sensing surface during object interactions, hindering more informative contact with cm-scale objects frequently encountered in the real world. The soft interfaces of visuotactile sensors are often made of hyperelastic elastomers, which are difficult to simulate quickly and accurately when extremely deformed for tactile information. Additionally, many visuotactile sensors that rely on strict internal light conditions or pattern tracking will fail if the surface is highly deformed. In this work, we propose an algorithm that fuses proximity and visuotactile point clouds for contact patch segmentation that is entirely independent from membrane mechanics. This algorithm exploits the synchronous, high-res proximity and visuotactile modalities enabled by an extremely deformable, selectively transmissive soft membrane, which uses visible light for visuotactile sensing and infrared light for proximity depth. We present the hardware design, membrane fabrication, and evaluation of our contact patch algorithm in low (10%), medium (60%), and high (100%+) membrane strain states. We compare our algorithm against three baselines: proximity-only, tactile-only, and a membrane mechanics model. Our proposed algorithm outperforms all baselines with an average RMSE under 2.8mm of the contact patch geometry across all strain ranges. We demonstrate our contact patch algorithm in four applications: varied stiffness membranes, torque and shear-induced wrinkling, closed loop control for whole body manipulation, and pose estimation.

Abstract

We study experimentally the processes of parametric excitation in microscopic magnetically saturated disks of nanometer-thick Yttrium Iron Garnet. We show that, depending on the relative orientation between the parametric pumping field and the static magnetization, excitation of either degenerate or non-degenerate magnon pairs is possible. In the latter case, which is particularly important for applications associated with the realization of computation in the reciprocal space, a single-frequency pumping can generate pairs of magnons whose frequencies correspond to different eigenmodes of the disk. We show that, depending on the size of the disk and the modes involved, the frequency difference in a pair can vary in the range 0.1-0.8 GHz. We demonstrate that in this system, one can easily realize a practically important situation where several magnon pairs share the same mode. We also observe the simultaneous generation of up to six different modes using a fixed-frequency monochromatic pumping. Our experimental findings are supported by numerical calculations that allow us to unambiguously identify the excited modes. Abstract

We advocate for a Galactic center (GC) field to be added to the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey (GBTDS). The new field would yield high-cadence photometric and astrometric measurements of an unprecedented ${\sim}$3.3 million stars toward the GC. This would enable a wide range of science cases, such as finding star-compact object binaries that may ultimately merge as LISA-detectable gravitational wave sources, constraining the mass function of stars and compact objects in different environments, detecting populations of microlensing and transiting exoplanets, studying stellar flares and variability in young and old stars, and monitoring accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. In addition, high-precision proper motions and parallaxes would open a new window into the large-scale dynamics of stellar populations at the GC, yielding insights into the formation and evolution of galactic nuclei and their co-evolution with the growth of the supermassive black hole. We discuss the possible trade-offs between the notional GBTDS and the addition of a GC field with either an optimal or minimal cadence. Ultimately, the addition of a GC field to the GBTDS would dramatically increase the science return of Roman and provide a legacy dataset to study the mid-plane and innermost regions of our Galaxy., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Studying chemistry and chemical composition is fundamental to go back to formation history of planetary systems. We propose here to have another look at five targets to better determine their composition and the chemical mechanisms that take place in their atmospheres. We present a re-analysis of five Hot Jupiters, combining multiple instruments and using Bayesian retrieval methods. We compare different combinations of molecules present in the simulated atmosphere, different chemistry types as well as different clouds parametrization. As a consequence of recent studies questioning the detection of Na and K in the atmosphere of HD 209458b as being potentially contaminated by stellar lines when present, we study the impact on other retrieval parameters of misinterpreting the presence of these alkali species. We use spatially scanned observations from the grisms G102 and G141 of the WFC3 on HST, with a wavelength coverage of $\sim$0.8 to $\sim$1.7 microns. We analyse these data with the publicly available Iraclis pipeline. We added to our datasets STIS observations to increase our wavelength coverage from $\sim$0.4 to $\sim$1.7 microns. We then performed a Bayesian retrieval analysis with the open-source TauREx using a nested sampling algorithm. We explore the influence of including Na and K on the retrieval of the molecules from the atmosphere. Our data re-analysis and Bayesian retrieval are consistent with previous studies but we find small differences in the retrieved parameters. After all, Na and K has no significant impact on the properties of the planet atmospheres. Therefore, we present here our new best-fit models, taking into account molecular abundances varying freely and equilibrium chemistry. Abstract

The ESA Euclid mission is scheduled to launch on July 1st 2023. This White Paper discusses how Euclid observations of the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey (GBTDS) area could dramatically enhance the exoplanet science output of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman). An early Euclid pre-imaging survey of the Roman GBTDS fields, conducted soon after launch, can improve proper motion determinations for Roman exoplanet microlenses that can yield a factor of up to $\sim 5$ improvement in exoplanet mass measurements. An extended Euclid mission would also enable the possibility of sustained simultaneous observations of the GBTDS by Euclid and Roman that would achieve large gains in several areas of Roman exoplanet science, including science that is impossible to achieve with Roman alone. These include: a comprehensive demographic survey for free-floating planets that includes precision mass measurements to establish the true nature of individual candidates; detection, confirmation and mass measurements of exomoons; direct exoplanet mass measurements through parallax and finite source size effects for a large sample of bound exoplanets detected jointly by Euclid and Roman; enhanced false-positive discrimination for the large samples of transiting planets that Roman will detect. Our main recommendation to NASA and ESA is to initiate a Joint Study Group as early as possible that can examine how both missions could best conduct a coordinated campaign. Abstract

The Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph instrument (NIRISS) is the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) contribution to the suite of four science instruments of JWST. As one of the three NIRISS observing modes, the Single Object Slitless Spectroscopy (SOSS) mode is tailor-made to undertake time-series observations of exoplanets to perform transit spectroscopy. The SOSS permits observing point sources between 0.6 and 2.8 um at a resolving power of 650 at 1.25 um using a slit-less cross-dispersing grism while its defocussing cylindrical lens enables observing targets as bright as J=6.7 by spreading light across 23 pixels along the cross-dispersion axis. This paper officially presents the design of the SOSS mode, its operation, characterization, and its performance, from ground-based testing and flight-based Commissioning. On-sky measurements demonstrate a peak photon conversion efficiency of 55% at 1.2 um. The first time-series on the A-type star BD+60o1753 achieves a flux stability close to the photon-noise limit, so far tested to a level of 20 parts per million on 40-minute time-scales after simply subtracting a long-term trend. Uncorrected 1/f noise residuals underneath the spectral traces add an extra source of noise equivalent to doubling the readout noise. Preliminary analysis of a HAT-P-14b transit time-series indicates that it is difficult to remove all the noise in pixels with partially saturated ramps. Abstract

We performed spin-, time- and angle-resolved extreme ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (STARPES) of excitons prepared by photoexcitation of inversion-symmetric 2H-WSe$_2$ with circularly polarized light. The very short probing depth of XUV photoemission permits selective measurement of photoelectrons originating from the top-most WSe$_2$ layer, allowing for direct measurement of hidden spin polarization of bright and momentum-forbidden dark excitons. Our results reveal efficient chiroptical control of bright excitons' hidden spin polarization. Following optical photoexcitation, intervalley scattering between nonequivalent K-K' valleys leads to a decay of bright excitons' hidden spin polarization. Conversely, the ultrafast formation of momentum-forbidden dark excitons acts as a local spin polarization reservoir, which could be used for spin injection in van der Waals heterostructures involving multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of prophylactic ranibizumab (PR) injections given every 3 months in eyes with intermediate nonexudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on drusen volume, macular layer thicknesses, and progression of geographic atrophy (GA) area over 24 months in the PREVENT trial. METHODS: This post hoc analysis of the prospective PREVENT trial compared eyes with intermediate AMD randomized to PR versus sham injections to determine rates of conversion to neovascular AMD over 24 months. Drusen area and volume, macular thickness and volume, and retinal layer thicknesses were measured on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images and analyzed. Masked grading of GA area and subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs) using fundus autofluorescence images was performed. RESULTS: There were no statistical differences in drusen area and volumes between groups, and similar reductions in central subfield thickness, mean cube thickness, cube volume, and retinal sublayer thickness from baseline to 24 months (P = 0.018 to < 0.001), with no statistical differences between groups in any of these anatomic parameters. These findings were not impacted by the presence or absence of SDD. Among the 9 eyes with GA in this study, mean GA growth rate from baseline to 24 months was 1.34 +/- 0.79 mm2/year after PR and 1.95 +/- 1.73 mm2/year in sham-treated eyes (P = 0.49), and similarly showed no statistical difference with square root transformation (P = 0.61). CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic ranibizumab given every 3 months did not appear to affect drusen volume, macular thinning, or GA progression in eyes with intermediate AMD. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: This work investigates the impact of PR on progressive retinal degeneration in a clinical trial.

Abstract

Brain cell structure and function reflect neurodevelopment, plasticity and ageing, and changes can help flag pathological processes such as neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Accurate and quantitative methods to non-invasively disentangle cellular structural features are needed and are a substantial focus of brain research. Diffusion-weighted MR spectroscopy (dMRS) gives access to diffusion properties of endogenous intracellular brain metabolites that are preferentially located inside specific brain cell populations. Despite its great potential, dMRS remains a challenging technique on all levels: from the data acquisition to the analysis, quantification, modelling and interpretation of results. These challenges were the motivation behind the organisation of the Lorentz Workshop on 'Best Practices and Tools for Diffusion MR Spectroscopy' held in Leiden in September 2021. During the workshop, the dMRS community established a set of recommendations to execute robust dMRS studies. Abstract

We report a search for lepton-flavor-violating decays $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ ($\ell^- =e^-,\mu^-$) at the Belle II experiment, using a sample of electron-positron data produced at the SuperKEKB collider in 2019-2021 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 190 fb$^{-1}$. We use a new untagged selection for $e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^-$ events, where the signal $\tau$ is searched for as a neutrinoless final state of a single charged lepton and a $\phi$ meson and the other $\tau$ is not reconstructed in any specific decay mode, in contrast to previous measurements by the BaBar and Belle experiments. We find no evidence for $\tau^- \to \ell^- \phi$ decays and obtain upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level of 23 $\times 10^{-8}$ and 9.7$\times 10^{-8}$ for $\tau^- \rightarrow e^-\phi$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \mu^-\phi$, respectively

Abstract

We present a measurement of the branching fractions of four $B^{0,-}\to D^{(*)+,0} K^- K^{0}_S$ decay modes. The measurement is based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ${362~\text{fb}^{-1}}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy to separate signal and background, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of the invariant mass of the $K^-K_S^0$ system. We find the branching fractions to be: \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)=(1.89\pm 0.16\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0)=(0.85\pm 0.11\pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4},\] \[ \text{B}(B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0)=(1.57\pm 0.27\pm 0.12)\times 10^{-4}, \] \[ \text{B}(\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0)=(0.96\pm 0.18\pm 0.06)\times 10^{-4},\] where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of $\text{B}(B^-\to D^0K^-K_S^0)$ compared to previous measurements.

97. The Rapid Rise of Severe Marine Heat Wave Systems

Abstract

We introduce a new methodology to study marine heat waves, extreme events in the sea surface temperature (SST) of the global ocean. Motivated by previously large and impactful marine heat waves and by theoretical expectation that the dominant heating processes coherently affect large regions of the ocean, we introduce a methodology from computer vision to construct marine heat wave systems (MWHSs) -- the collation of SST extrema in dimensions of area and time. We identify 649,475 MHWSs in the 37 year period (1983-2019) of daily SST records and find that the duration t_dur (days), maximum area A_max (km$^2$), and total ``volume'' N_vox (days km$^2$) for the majority of MHWSs are well-described by power-law distributions: t_dur^(-3), A_max^(-2) and N_vox^(-2). These characteristics confirm SST extrema exhibit strong spatial coherence that define the formation and evolution of marine heat waves. Furthermore, the most severe MHWSs deviate from these power-laws and are the dominant manifestation of marine heat waves: extrema in ocean heating are driven by the ~200 systems with largest area and duration. We further demonstrate that the previously purported rise in the incidence of marine heat wave events over the past decade is only significant in these severe systems. A change point analysis reveals a rapid increase in days under a severe MHW in most regions of the global ocean over the period of 2000-2005. Understanding the origin and impacts of marine heat waves in the current and future ocean, therefore, should focus on the production and evolution of the largest-scale and longest-duration heating phenomena., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures; Accepted to Environmental Research: Climate

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

We measured precise masses of the host and planet in OGLE-2003-BLG-235 system, when the lens and source were resolving, with 2018 Keck high resolution images. This measurement is in agreement with the observation taken in 2005 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In 2005 data, the lens and sources were not resolved and the measurement was made using color-dependent centroid shift only. Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will measure masses using data typically taken within 3-4 years of the peak of the event which is much shorter baseline compared to most of the mass measurements to date. Hence, color dependent centroid shift will be one of the primary method of mass measurements for Roman. Yet, mass measurements of only two events (OGLE-2003-BLG-235 and OGLE-2005-BLG-071) are done using the color dependent centroid shift method so far. The accuracy of the measurements using this method are neither completely known nor well studied. The agreement of Keck and HST results, shown in this paper, is very important since this agreement confirms the accuracy of the mass measurements determined at a small lens-source separation using the color dependent centroid shift method. This also shows that with >100 high resolution images, Roman telescope will be able to use color dependent centroid shift at 3-4 years time baseline and produce mass measurements. We find that OGLE-2003-BLG-235 is a planetary system consists of a 2.34 +- 0.43M_Jup planet orbiting a 0.56 +- 0.06M_Sun K-dwarf host star at a distance of 5.26 +- 0.71 kpc from the Sun., Comment: Submitted to AJ, under review. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2009.02329

100. Loss-compensated non-reciprocal scattering based on synchronization

Abstract

Abstract Breaking the reciprocity of wave propagation is a problem of fundamental interest, and a much-sought functionality in practical applications, both in photonics and phononics. Although it has been achieved using resonant linear scattering from cavities with broken time-reversal symmetry, such realizations have remained inescapably plagued by inherent passivity constraints, which make absorption losses unavoidable, leading to stringent limitations in transmitted power. In this work, we solve this problem by converting the cavity resonance into a limit cycle, exploiting the uncharted interplay between non-linearity, gain, and non-reciprocity. Remarkably, strong enough incident waves can synchronize with these self-sustained oscillations and use their energy for amplification. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that this mechanism can simultaneously enhance non-reciprocity and compensate absorption. Real-world acoustic scattering experiments allow us to observe non-reciprocal transmission of audible sound in a synchronization-based three-port circulator with full immunity against losses.
