Abstract: Single-cell transcriptomic platforms provide an opportunity to map an organism's response to environmental cues with high resolution. Here, we applied single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) to establish the tissue and cell type-resolved transcriptome of the adult C. elegans and characterize the inter- and trans-generational transcriptional impact of ethanol. We profiled the transcriptome of 41,749 nuclei resolving into 31 clusters, representing a diverse array of adult cell types including syncytial tissues. Following exposure to human-relevant doses of alcohol, several germline, striated muscle, and neuronal clusters were identified as being the most transcriptionally impacted at the F1 and F3 generations. The effect on germline clusters was confirmed by phenotypic enrichment analysis as well as by functional validation, which revealed a remarkable inter- and trans-generational increase in germline apoptosis, aneuploidy, and embryonic lethality. Together, snRNA-seq represents a valuable approach for the detailed examination of an adult organism's response to environmental exposures.

52. Real-Time Simultaneous Localization and Mapping with LiDAR intensity

Abstract: We propose a novel real-time LiDAR intensity image-based simultaneous localization and mapping method , which addresses the geometry degeneracy problem in unstructured environments. Traditional LiDAR-based front-end odometry mostly relies on geometric features such as points, lines and planes. A lack of these features in the environment can lead to the failure of the entire odometry system. To avoid this problem, we extract feature points from the LiDAR-generated point cloud that match features identified in LiDAR intensity images. We then use the extracted feature points to perform scan registration and estimate the robot ego-movement. For the back-end, we jointly optimize the distance between the corresponding feature points, and the point to plane distance for planes identified in the map. In addition, we use the features extracted from intensity images to detect loop closure candidates from previous scans and perform pose graph optimization. 53. Swarm-SLAM : Sparse Decentralized Collaborative Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Framework for Multi-Robot Systems

Abstract: Collaborative Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (C-SLAM) is a vital component for successful multi-robot operations in environments without an external positioning system, such as indoors, underground or underwater. In this paper, we introduce Swarm-SLAM, an open-source C-SLAM system that is designed to be scalable, flexible, decentralized, and sparse, which are all key properties in swarm robotics. Our system supports inertial, lidar, stereo, and RGB-D sensing, and it includes a novel inter-robot loop closure prioritization technique that reduces communication and accelerates convergence. We evaluated our ROS-2 implementation on five different datasets, and in a real-world experiment with three robots communicating through an ad-hoc network. 54. Diseño y evaluación de un simulador quirúrgico de anastomosis biliar fabricado con impresión 3D

Abstract: La simulación médica ha demostrado mejorar las habilidades quirúrgicas de los cirujanos en un entorno seguro. La impresión 3D ofrece una alternativa de bajo costo para el aprendizaje técnico. El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir la creación de un simulador de anastomosis biliar con fabricación aditiva y evaluarlo por cirujanos en diversas etapas de formación. Estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo y observacional con muestreo no probabilístico. El simulador de anastomosis biliar se creó con impresión 3D y moldeo en silicona líquida. Fue Evaluado mediante una encuesta tipo Likert. Se midió fidelidad, funcionalidad y calidad educativa. Se calculó el costo total del dispositivo. Se aplicó estadística descriptiva. Doce personas evaluaron el simulador: 3 cirujanos HPB, 4 residentes HPB y 5 cirujanos generales en formación. La edad promedio fue de 35,33 ± 11,02 años. El 75% tenía experiencia con simuladores inorgánicos y el 50% en anastomosis biliares. La experiencia quirúrgica previa promedio fue de 9,75 ± 11,01 años. La precisión anatómica (2,58/5) y similitud con el conducto biliar (2,67/5) fueron los puntos más débiles. La funcionalidad (3,83/5) y durabilidad (4,83/5) fueron bien valoradas. La calidad educativa recibió 4,67/5. La autoeficacia varió según la experiencia: cirujanos HPB (1,11/5), residentes (3,42/5) y rotantes (5/5). La evaluación global fue de 4,5/5. Nuestro estudio confirmó la viabilidad de un simulador 3D para anastomosis biliar, utilizando fabricación aditiva y moldeado con silicona. Este modelo accesible facilita el aprendizaje de anastomosis biliares en cirujanos en formación. Futuras investigaciones deben demostrar su eficacia educativa y validez.

55. PHILADELPHIA ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA (PH+ ALL) OR BLASTIC CRISIS OF CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKEMIA (CML-BC)?

Abstract: Introduction: The presence of BCR::ABL1 gene rearrangements (Philadelphia Chromosome) in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) at diagnosis is critical for prognostic stratification and treatment decisions. Distinguishing between Ph+ ALL and lymphoid blast crisis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML-BC) is challenging. While most Ph+ ALL cases present with a p190 (e1a2) fusion, a subset displays p210 (e13a2 or e14a2) or p230 fusions. It remains unclear whether these cases are true de novo Ph+ ALL or undiagnosed chronic phase CML progressing to blastic crisis. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with ALL (characterized by > 20% lymphoblasts) referred for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) between 2019 and 2024, who exhibited t(9;22)(q34;q11) or BCR::ABL1 rearrangements identified through cytogenetic analysis or RT-PCR. The relationship between transcript subtypes identified through molecular biology and clinical, morphological, and phenotypic characteristics, and minimal residual disease (MRD) via RQ-PCR (molMRD) and flow cytometry (flowMRD) were analysed in relation to survival outcomes. Results: 30 ALL patients assessed between 2016 and 2024 had Ph+ (24% of 125 ALL), 18M/12F, 22 adults median age 36.6 years (range 19-75.6) and 8 children (4.77 y, range 3.8-14). Twenty patients with p190 (e1a2) transcript were classified as Ph+ ALL (17 B-cell Ph+ ALL and 3 early T-cell Ph+ ALL) and 10 patients with p210 transcript were classified as having CML blastic crisis. In the CML group, transcript subtypes included e13a2 (b2a2) in 2 patients, e14a2 (b3a2) in 1, and multiple associated transcripts (b2a2 and/or b3a2 with e1a2) in 7 patients. Of these 10 patients, only 2 had a prior CML history with previous ITK use; 4 presented with extramedullary disease (2 CNS, 1 breast, 1 liver), and 4 had leukocytosis with neutrophilia in the initial CBC, suggesting myeloid involvement. The Ph+ ALL group had a lower median age at diagnosis (23.9 vs. 41.8 years) compared to the CML-BC group, lower median leukocyte (5,565 vs. 57,850/uL) and platelet counts (32,000 vs. 134,000/uL) at diagnosis. There were no differences in precursor left shift or blast predominance between groups. All patients received polychemotherapy including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Early death due to refractory disease occurred in five older adult patients (16.6%). Three children and two AYA patients maintained a complete response to TKI therapy. Twenty patients (7 BC-CML and 12 Ph+ ALL) underwent HCT; five of these relapsed, with three undergoing a second HCT and two dying due to relapsed disease. No differences was found in overall survival (63.6% vs. 50.0%, p = 0.25), median survival time (14.5 years vs. 2.5 years), or relapse rates between groups. MRD was evaluated using RQ-PCR and MFC at 1-, 2-, and 3 months post-transplantation. MRD analysis showed a strong correlation between MFC and RQ-PCR results (r = 0.643, 95% CI 0.50-0.74, p < 0.001). Of the 54 samples classified as MRD-negative by RQ-PCR, 53 (98.1%) were also MRD-negative by MFC. Among the 48 samples deemed MRD-positive by PCR, 39 (81.3%) were confirmed positive by MFC. When restricted to samples with > 0.01% MRD by PCR, the proportion of those containing ALL cells according to MFC remained high (28 of 30, 93.3%). Conclusion: In conclusion, this retrospective study underscores the complexity in distinguishing Ph+ ALL from CML-BC and highlight the importance of comprehensive molecular and phenotypic analyses in guiding treatment strategies and prognostication. Future research should focus on refining methodologies for MRD assessment of Ph+ ALL patients and exploring their synergistic potential to better distinguish between Ph+ ALL and CML-BC.

Abstract: O exame de rotina de líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR) é utilizado como auxiliar no diagnóstico, estratificação de risco e definição terapêutica de neoplasias hematológicas que acometem sistema nervoso central (SNC). A Aliança AMARTE é uma organização cooperativa que envolve 31 centros brasileiros de oncologia pediátrica com os objetivos de equalização do diagnóstico, acesso ao tratamento e melhora da sobrevida dos pacientes oncológicos pediátricos no Brasil. Objetivo: Identificar entre os centros da aliança AMARTE como é feita análise liquórica incluindo as etapas de punção lombar, análise laboratorial do LCR, disponibilidade de imunofenotipagem por citometria de fluxo (ICF) e quimioterapia intratecal em pacientes pediátricos com neoplasias hematológicas. Metodologia: Foi elaborado um questionário a ser respondido pelos centros da Aliança AMARTE incluindo questões sobre as etapas de punção a análise LCR. Após, os participantes se organizaram em subgrupos para revisão de literatura e escrita de um guia de recomendações para coleta e processamento de LCR. Resultados: 21 centros responderam o questionário. Da coleta de LCR: 61,9% dos centros tem um profissional exclusivo para os procedimentos e todos dispõe de analgesia/sedação (61,9% realizada por anestesista); 76% realizam coleta por gotejamento e o volume coletado foi variável entre as instituições, com 45% entre 1 e 2ml e cerca de 40% acima de 4ml; o tempo de decúbito com elevação das pernas foi de 1 hora em 22%, sendo a maioria dos centros com tempo de 30 minutos. Da infusão de quimioterapia: administração é realizada por seringa única em 54,2% dos centros; o tempo entre preparo e administração foi de até 2 horas em 91,7% dos centros; volume coletado, os quimioterápicos e o corticóide utilizados variaram entre os centros e foram de acordo com protocolo de tratamento utilizado. Da amostra/análise: o tempo de processamento de amostras foi de até 1 hora em 12/20 centros respondedores e entre 2-3h em 3 centros (utilização de conservante); 85,7% dos centros fazem análise citomorfológica independente da contagem de células sendo 52,4% realizada por bioquímico; 11/21 tem avaliação liquorica por ICF disponível, e na maioria dos centros é realizada ao diagnóstico ou na suspeita de recaída. O guia de recomendações gerado a seguir contemplou 4 partes: I- Punção lombar e coleta de LCR, II- Quimioterapia intratecal, III- Processamento do LCR, IV- Análise Imunofenotípica de LCR. Conclusão: O questionário permitiu identificar uma variabilidade nas etapas de coleta, manuseio de quimioterapia intratecal e análise de LCR no cenário brasileiro, com possibilidade de impacto direto no sucesso terapêutico dos pacientes pediátricos. Esses achados justificaram a criação de um guia de boas práticas em punção e análise de LCR, baseado em literatura e experiência dos centros participantes, com o objetivo de equalizar a rotina do oncologista/hematologista pediátrico, obter reprodutibilidade dos processos e o benefício final dos pacientes pediátricos.

57. Sulfate attack on geopolymer: effect of the proportion of binder and air-entraining additive

Abstract: Abstract This research aimed to evaluate the resistance to sodium and magnesium sulfates of geopolymeric mortars, prepared with different proportions of alkaline activators of silicate and sodium hydroxide (Ma), Na2O content in relation to metakaolin (MK) and silica modulus (Ms). Additionally, an air-entraining additive was also used in an attempt to mitigate the expansive effects of sulfate attack for 20 weeks. The sulfate resistance properties were evaluated by the change in longitudinal length, mass variation, compressive strength, flexural tensile strength, and microstructure. SEM/EDS analyses suggest the formation of caminite and a change in the structure of the aluminosilicate gel to M-A-S-(H) in mortars exposed to MgSO4, while thenardite was indicated as a harmful product in mortars subjected to Na2SO4. The experimental results also showed that the greater amount of Na2SiO3 in the geopolymer formulation contributes to a denser structure and lower water absorption rate, but resulted in greater physical deterioration and expansion after immersion in sodium magnesium sulfate. The air-entraining additive did not minimize the tensions generated by the sulfate attack. In mortars synthesized with Na2O/MK = 15% and Ms = 1.5 (GEO-15-1.5) and Na2O/MK = 22% and Ms = 1.0 and 1.5 (GEO-22-1.0 and GEO-22-1.5), the compressive strengths were similar to standard samples when immersed in MgSO4, while in the Na2SO4 solution the increase in strength was attributed to the temporary refinement of the pores by sulfate crystals.

Abstract: The mechanism underlying ischaemic heart disease (IHD) has been primarily attributed to obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). However, non-obstructive coronary arteries are identified in >50% of patients undergoing elective coronary angiography, recently leading to growing interest in the investigation and management of angina/ischaemia with non-obstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA/INOCA). INOCA is an umbrella term encompassing a multiple spectrum of possible pathogenetic entities, including coronary vasomotor disorders which consist of two major endotypes: coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) and vasospastic angina. Both conditions can coexist and be associated with concomitant obstructive CAD. Particularly, CMD refers to myocardial ischaemia due to reduced vasodilatory capacity of coronary microcirculation secondary to structural remodelling or impaired resting microvascular tone (functional) or a combination of both. CMD is not a benign condition and is more prevalent in women presenting with chronic coronary syndrome compared to men. In this setting, an impaired coronary flow reserve has been associated with increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. ANOCA/INOCA patients also experience impaired quality of life and associated increased healthcare costs. Therefore, research in this scenario has led to better definition, classification, and prognostic stratification based on the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. The development and validation of non-invasive imaging modalities, invasive coronary vasomotor function testing and angiography-derived indices provide a comprehensive characterisation of CMD. The present narrative review aims to summarise current data relating to the diagnostic approach to CMD and provides details on the sequence that therapeutic management should follow.

Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment recently reported limits on WIMP-nucleus interactions from its initial science run, down to $9.2\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ for the spin-independent interaction of a 36 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP at 90% confidence level. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the backgrounds important for this result and for other upcoming physics analyses, including neutrinoless double-beta decay searches and effective field theory interpretations of LUX-ZEPLIN data. We confirm that the in-situ determinations of bulk and fixed radioactive backgrounds are consistent with expectations from the ex-situ assays. Abstract: The topology of a robotic swarm affects the convergence speed of consensus and the mobility of the robots. In this paper, we prove the existence of a complete set of local topology manipulation operations that allow the transformation of a swarm topology. The set is complete in the sense that any other possible set of manipulation operations can be performed by a sequence of operations from our set. The operations are local as they depend only on the first and second hop neighbors' information to transform any initial spanning tree of the network's graph to any other connected tree with the same number of nodes. The flexibility provided by our method is similar to global methods that require full knowledge of the swarm network. We prove the existence of a sequence of transformations for any tree-to-tree transformation, and derive sequences of operations to form a line or star from any initial spanning tree. Our work provides a theoretical and practical framework for topological control of a swarm, establishing global properties using only local information.

Abstract: Abstract Background High-throughput sequencing (HTS) has become the gold standard approach for variant analysis in cancer research. However, somatic variants may occur at low fractions due to contamination from normal cells or tumor heterogeneity; this poses a significant challenge for standard HTS analysis pipelines. The problem is exacerbated in scenarios with minimal tumor DNA, such as circulating tumor DNA in plasma. Assessing sensitivity and detection of HTS approaches in such cases is paramount, but time-consuming and expensive: specialized experimental protocols and a sufficient quantity of samples are required for processing and analysis. To overcome these limitations, we propose a new computational approach specifically designed for the generation of artificial datasets suitable for this task, simulating ultra-deep targeted sequencing data with low-fraction variants and demonstrating their effectiveness in benchmarking low-fraction variant calling. Results Our approach enables the generation of artificial raw reads that mimic real data without relying on pre-existing data by using NEAT, a fine-grained read simulator that generates artificial datasets using models learned from multiple different datasets. Then, it incorporates low-fraction variants to simulate somatic mutations in samples with minimal tumor DNA content. To prove the suitability of the created artificial datasets for low-fraction variant calling benchmarking, we used them as ground truth to evaluate the performance of widely-used variant calling algorithms: they allowed us to define tuned parameter values of major variant callers, considerably improving their detection of very low-fraction variants. Conclusions Our findings highlight both the pivotal role of our approach in creating adequate artificial datasets with low tumor fraction, facilitating rapid prototyping and benchmarking of algorithms for such dataset type, as well as the important need of advancing low-fraction variant calling techniques.

Abstract: Event-based cameras (ECs) are bio-inspired sensors that asynchronously report brightness changes for each pixel. Due to their high dynamic range, pixel bandwidth, temporal resolution, low power consumption, and computational simplicity, they are beneficial for vision-based projects in challenging lighting conditions and they can detect fast movements with their microsecond response time. The first generation of ECs are monochrome, but color data is very useful and sometimes essential for certain vision-based applications. The latest technology enables manufacturers to build color ECs, trading off the size of the sensor and substantially reducing the resolution compared to monochrome models, despite having the same bandwidth. In addition, ECs only detect changes in light and do not show static or slowly moving objects. We introduce a method to detect full RGB events using a monochrome EC aided by a structured light projector. The projector emits rapidly changing RGB patterns of light beams on the scene, the reflection of which is captured by the EC. We combine the benefits of ECs and projection-based techniques and allow depth and color detection of static or moving objects with a commercial TI LightCrafter 4500 projector and a monocular monochrome EC, paving the way for frameless RGB-D sensing applications.

Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c$^2$. Abstract: Communication is an important capability for multi-robot exploration because (1) inter-robot communication (comms) improves coverage efficiency and (2) robot-to-base comms improves situational awareness. Exploring comms-restricted (e.g., subterranean) environments requires a multi-robot system to tolerate and anticipate intermittent connectivity, and to carefully consider comms requirements, otherwise mission-critical data may be lost. In this paper, we describe and analyze ACHORD (Autonomous & Collaborative High-Bandwidth Operations with Radio Droppables), a multi-layer networking solution which tightly co-designs the network architecture and high-level decision-making for improved comms. ACHORD provides bandwidth prioritization and timely and reliable data transfer despite intermittent connectivity. Furthermore, it exposes low-layer networking metrics to the application layer to enable robots to autonomously monitor, map, and extend the network via droppable radios, as well as restore connectivity to improve collaborative exploration. We evaluate our solution with respect to the comms performance in several challenging underground environments including the DARPA SubT Finals competition environment. Abstract: This article analyses valuation practices, focusing on the way health data constitute different kinds of assets for different actors within an industry-academia partnership in the field of microbiome research. It examines emerging bioeconomic dynamics within data-driven computational biology, contributing to debates about the sociopolitical implications of multiple and synergic valuation practices in personalized medicine for future public health. Through the ethnographic exploration of a personalized nutrition startup active in Europe and the US and a metagenomics research lab based in Italy, we explore the dynamics around the intersection of knowledge production with scientific, economic, and health value. In contrast to traditional commodity and rent-based structures, we expose a hybrid model of bioeconomic enterprise that challenges rigid distinctions between commodification and asset-based rentiership, highlighting synergic business models where multiple registers of the value of worth are played out, translated, and combined. The study unveils a nuanced relationship between data, research, and economic drivers, where scientists perceive they can pursue research independently from market pressures. Beyond these perceptions and narratives, we highlight the economic dynamics that suture basic research and industry in their promotion of health governance that causes social justice concerns by restricting access to high income and hegemonic types of clients/patients. We clarify that epistemic aspects cannot be disentangled from sociopolitical aspects, especially in the digital age, and that where governments implement and enhance digital health solutions, they also need to plan for consistent social (re)adjustments.

Abstract: The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for weakly interacting massive particles, while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.

Abstract: The complexity of mechatronic systems has increased with the significant advancements of technology in their components which makes their design more challenging. This is due to the need for incorporating expertise from different domains as well as the increased number and complexity of components integrated into the product. To alleviate the burden of designing such products, many industries and researchers are attracted to the concept of modularization which is to identify a subset of system components that can form a module. To achieve this, a novel product-related dependency management approach is proposed in this paper with the support of an augmented design structure matrix. This approach makes it possible to model positive and negative dependencies and to compute the combination potency between components to form modules. This approach is then integrated into a modified non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III to concurrently optimize the design and identify the modules. The methodology is exemplified through the case study of a layout design of an automatic greenhouse. By applying the proposed methodology to the case study, it was possible to generate concepts that decreased the number of modules from 9 down to 4 while ensuring the optimization of the design performance.

Twenty-nine cows had macrohematuria and 21 microhematuria. From the 29 cows with macrohematuria, 13 had a countless number of erythrocytes per high power macroscopic field and anemia. All cows had dipstick proteinuria. Median haptoglobin concentrations were elevated for 47 BEH cows with a 3.9-fold increase, suggesting a chronic inflammatory response while the number of total leukocytes and segmented neutrophils were above the reference intervals for 14 cows. Besides inflammation, there is a hypothesis that bracken fern could cause hemolysis in the circulation. Therefore, there could be a larger acute phase reaction but much of the haptoglobin was being removed as it was being produced. In our study, increases in haptoglobin, creatine kinase, hyperglobulinemia and anemia were found in cows with BEH, contributing to the understanding of the chronic inflammatory response which could be associated with neoplastic lesions in the urinary bladder caused by long-term and repeated ingestion of Pteridium species.

Abstract: Background: Although the clinical factors associated with progression of coronary artery disease have been well studied, the angiographic predictors are less defined. Objectives: Our objective was to study the clinical and angiographic factors that associate with progression of coronary artery stenoses. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients undergoing multiple, clinically indicated invasive coronary angiograms with an interval greater than 6 months, between January 2013 and December 2016. Lesion segments were analysed using Quantitative Coronary Angiography (QCA) if a stenosis ≥ 20 % was identified on either angiogram. Stenosis progression was defined as an increase ≥ 10 % in stenosis severity, with progressor groups analysed on both patient and lesion levels. Mixed-effects regression analyses were performed to evaluate factors associated with progression of individual stenoses. Results: 199 patients were included with 881 lesions analysed. 108 (54.3 %) patients and 186 (21.1 %) stenoses were classified as progressors. The median age was 65 years (IQR 56–73) and the median interval between angiograms was 2.1 years (IQR 1.2–3.0). On a patient level, age, number of lesions and presence of multivessel disease at baseline were each associated with progressor status. 78. Message Flow Analysis with Complex Causal Links for Distributed ROS 2 Systems

Abstract: Distributed robotic systems rely heavily on the publish-subscribe communication paradigm and middleware frameworks that support it, such as the Robot Operating System (ROS), to efficiently implement modular computation graphs. The ROS 2 executor, a high-level task scheduler which handles ROS 2 messages, is a performance bottleneck. We extend ros2_tracing, a framework with instrumentation and tools for real-time tracing of ROS 2, with the analysis and visualization of the flow of messages across distributed ROS 2 systems. Our method detects one-to-many and many-to-many causal links between input and output messages, including indirect causal links through simple user-level annotations. We validate our method on both synthetic and real robotic systems, and demonstrate its low runtime overhead. Moreover, the underlying intermediate execution representation database can be further leveraged to extract additional metrics and high-level results. This can provide valuable timing and scheduling information to further study and improve the ROS 2 executor as well as optimize any ROS 2 system. 79. Hierarchical Control of Smart Particle Swarms

Abstract: We present a method for the control of robot swarms using two subsets of robots: a larger group of simple, oblivious robots (which we call the workers) that is governed by simple local attraction forces, and a smaller group (the guides) with sufficient mission knowledge to create and displace a desired worker formation by operating on the local forces of the workers. The guides coordinate to shape the workers like smart particles by changing their interaction parameters. We study the approach with a large scale experiment in a physics based simulator with up to 5000 robots forming three different patterns. Our experiments reveal that the approach scales well with increasing robot numbers, and presents little pattern distortion. We evaluate the approach on a physical swarm of robots that use visual inertial odometry to compute their relative positions and obtain results that are comparable with simulation. Abstract: Visual place recognition techniques based on deep learning, which have imposed themselves as the state-of-the-art in recent years, do not generalize well to environments visually different from the training set. Thus, to achieve top performance, it is sometimes necessary to fine-tune the networks to the target environment. To this end, we propose a self-supervised domain calibration procedure based on robust pose graph optimization from Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) as the supervision signal without requiring GPS or manual labeling. Moreover, we leverage the procedure to improve uncertainty estimation for place recognition matches which is important in safety critical applications. We show that our approach can improve the performance of a state-of-the-art technique on a target environment dissimilar from its training set and that we can obtain uncertainty estimates. We believe that this approach will help practitioners to deploy robust place recognition solutions in real-world applications. Abstract: In robotics, data acquisition often plays a key part in unknown environment exploration. For example, storing information about the topography of the explored terrain or the natural dangers in the environment can inform the decision-making process of the robots. Therefore, it is crucial to store these data safely and to make it available quickly to the operators of the robotic system. In a decentralized system like a swarm of robots, this entails several challenges. To address them, we propose RASS, a decentralized risk-aware swarm storage and routing mechanism, which relies exclusively on local information sharing between neighbours to establish storage and routing fitness. We test our system through thorough experiments in a physics-based simulator and test its real-world applicability with physical experiments. We obtain convincing reliability, routing speeds, and swarm storage capacity results.

Abstract: The emergence of transparent wood as a viable alternative to traditional glass has sparked considerable interest in recent research endeavors. Despite advancements, challenges persist in the delignification methods and wood species utilized in prior studies. Therefore, this study delves into the potential of Brazilian eucalyptus wood for transparent wood production through the kraft pulping process. Delignification was carried out in a laboratory setting, replicating the kraft process with varying reaction times (15, 30, 45, and 60 min). The resulting delignified wood veneers were impregnated with a pre-polymerized PMMA solution. Abstract: Exploration of unknown environments is an important challenge in the field of robotics. While a single robot can achieve this task alone, evidence suggests it could be accomplished more efficiently by groups of robots, with advantages in terms of terrain coverage as well as robustness to failures. Exploration can be guided through belief maps, which provide probabilistic information about which part of the terrain is interesting to explore (either based on risk management or reward). This process can be centrally coordinated by building a collective belief map on a common server. However, relying on a central processing station creates a communication bottleneck and single point of failure for the system. In this paper, we present Distributed Online Risk-Aware (DORA) Explorer, an exploration system that leverages decentralized information sharing to update a common risk belief map. DORA Explorer allows a group of robots to explore an unknown environment discretized as a 2D grid with obstacles, with high coverage while minimizing exposure to risk, effectively reducing robot failures

Abstract: Objectives To determine the test–retest reliability and agreement of home-based functional capacity self-administered assessments in socially isolated older adults. Methods Fourteen community-dwelling older adults (eight females, 67.9 ± 7.7 years) volunteered for this study. Before testing, participants were screened online for eligibility and received instructional videos explaining test set-up and execution. Participants underwent the 30-second sit-to-standing test, gait speed tests at the usual pace, and timed-up-and-go tests administered 4 weeks apart. For the 30-second sit-to-standing protocol, participants were instructed to repeatedly sit and stand from a chair (with a height of ∼ 43 cm and without armrests) for 30 s, with the number of repetitions recorded. In the gait speed test protocol, participants were instructed to walk at their usual and comfortable pace, with the time taken recorded (seconds). In the timed-up-and-go, participants stood up from a chair, walked as fast as possible for 3 m, circled a marked point, and returned to the chair to sit down, completing the test, with the score recorded (seconds). A trained researcher conducted the scoring virtually via synchronous video. Results 30-second sit-to-standing, gait speed test, and timed-up-and-go showed excellent mean coefficient of variation values (2.0–4.9), small standard error of measurement (0.08–1.27), excellent intraclass coefficient (0.97–0.99), very strong correlations (0.97–0.99) and good agreement between the two days of testing. Conclusion Self-administered functional capacity tests performed by older adults at home were reliable with good agreement. Healthcare professionals and older adults should take advantage of simple remote self-administered assessments performed at home to evaluate older adults’ health status.

Abstract: Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract: O presente artigo trata de analisar as políticas adotadas pelo sistema de asilo da União Europeia e como estas se aplicam à proteção das crianças desacompanhadas que migram de forma forçada de um país terceiro para a União Europeia, haja vista sua vulnerabilidade frente aos riscos que enfrentam. Para tanto, foram utilizados o método de abordagem dedutivo, e a técnica de pesquisa bibliográfica, com a utilização de marcos teóricos como Bhabha e Jubilut, e documental com documentos disponibilizados pela própria União Europeia em seus sites oficiais. Assim, primeiramente será tratado acerca do atual contexto migratório infantil de países terceiros para a União Europeia, especificamente das crianças que migram desacompanhadas. Posteriormente, serão abordadas as políticas migratórias do Sistema Europeu Comum de Asilo, dando destaque ao Regulamento de Dublin III, que traz regras para a definição do Estado Membro responsável pelo processamento do pedido de asilo, em seguida, será analisado o funcionamento do sistema comum de asilo sob a ótica da proteção das crianças desacompanhadas. Por fim, conclui-se que não obstante a política migratória da União Europeia se fundamentar em princípios de direitos humanos, ela estabelece um sistema de proteção que é utilizado como instrumento de controle migratório.

96. Problemática Suicida. Un Estudio Descriptivo de los Ingresos por Guardia en Hospital General de la Ciudad de Paraná Entre 2018 y 2022

Abstract: La problemática suicida es un problema de salud pública. El presente trabajo se realizó en el contexto de los ingresos por guardia del Hospital San Martín de Paraná, Entre Ríos, Argentina que tuviese alguno de los siguientes motivos de consulta: intento de suicidio, conductas autolesivas sin intencionalidad de muerte e intentos de suicidio en contexto de consumo problemático de sustancias en el período 2018 – 2022. Los objetivos fueron: describir la frecuencia de motivos de consulta dentro de la problemática suicida en el período 2018-2022; evaluar la asociación entre los motivos de consulta y el año de ingreso; los motivos de consulta y el sexo; los motivos de consulta y la edad de los sujetos; y describir los factores protectores y de riesgo. Se trabajó con 893 historias clínicas, las cuales correspondían a 295 varones (33%) y 598 mujeres (67%) de entre 15 y 93 años (M= 31.16 DS= 14.76). Se utilizó un cuestionario confeccionado por expertos en la temática en salud mental del hospital. Se obtuvieron frecuencias y se calcularon Chi cuadrados de Pearson para evaluar la asociación entre variables categóricas. Se halló asociación entre motivo de consulta y año de ingreso, con aumento de frecuencia de autolesiones sin intencionalidad de muerte en 2022; un aumento de intentos de suicidios en contexto de consumo problemático en 2021. Se observó asociación entre motivo de consulta y edad con un aumento de intento de suicidios en jóvenes y un aumento de autolesiones sin intencionalidad de muerte en la adultez media. Se observó asociación entre motivo de consulta y edad. Como factor de riesgo se destaca la presencia de factores vitales estresantes y como factores protectores se destaca el apoyo familiar, aunque disminuye en adolescentes y jóvenes la escolarización, y el apoyo de pares.

Abstract: Marker-assisted selection (MAS) plays a crucial role in crop breeding improving the speed and precision of conventional breeding programmes by quickly and reliably identifying and selecting plants with desired traits. However, the efficacy of MAS depends on several prerequisites, with precise phenotyping being a key aspect of any plant breeding programme. Recent advancements in high-throughput remote phenotyping, facilitated by unmanned aerial vehicles coupled to machine learning, offer a non-destructive and efficient alternative to traditional, time-consuming, and labour-intensive methods. Furthermore, MAS relies on knowledge of marker-trait associations, commonly obtained through genome-wide association studies (GWAS), to understand complex traits such as drought tolerance, including yield components and phenology. However, GWAS has limitations that artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown to partially overcome. Additionally, AI and its explainable variants, which ensure transparency and interpretability, are increasingly being used as recognised problem-solving tools throughout the breeding process. Given these rapid technological advancements, this review provides an overview of state-of-the-art methods and processes underlying each MAS, from phenotyping, genotyping and association analyses to the integration of explainable AI along the entire workflow. In this context, we specifically address the challenges and importance of breeding winter wheat for greater drought tolerance with stable yields, as regional droughts during critical developmental stages pose a threat to winter wheat production. Finally, we explore the transition from scientific progress to practical implementation and discuss ways to bridge the gap between cutting-edge developments and breeders, expediting MAS-based winter wheat breeding for drought tolerance.

Abstract: Abstract This study investigated the effect of dolomitic lime incorporation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of metakaolin-based geopolymers activated by alkaline solution. Five geopolymer mixtures were prepared with the addition of 0.0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% dolomitic lime. The microstructure of the geopolymers was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD). The compressive strength of the mixtures ranged between 53.2 and 63.0 MPa after 28 days of ambient curing. SEM/EDS analyses showed that the main phases formed were the N-A-S-H gel together with the C-A-S-H and N-M-A-S-H gels in the mixtures with dolomitic lime. In summary, the results showed that the incorporation of dolomitic lime can significantly improve the microstructure and properties of geopolymers.

Abstract: IntroductionPlatelet-activating factor (PAF), PAF receptor (PAFR), and PAF- synthesis/degradation systems are involved in essential CNS processes such as neuroblast proliferation, differentiation, migration, and synaptic modulation. The retina is an important central nervous system (CNS) tissue for visual information processing. During retinal development, the balance between Retinal Progenitor Cell (RPC) proliferation and differentiation is crucial for proper cell determination and retinogenesis. Despite its importance in retinal development, the effects of PAFR deletion on RPC dynamics are still unknown.MethodsWe compared PAFR knockout mice (PAFR−/−) retinal postnatal development proliferation and differentiation aspects with control animals. Electrophysiological responses were analyzed by electroretinography (ERG).Results and discussionIn this study, we demonstrate that PAFR−/− mice increased proliferation during postnatal retinogenesis and altered the expression of specific differentiation markers. The retinas of postnatal PAFR−/− animals decreased neuronal differentiation and synaptic transmission markers, leading to differential responses to light stimuli measured by ERG. Our findings suggest that PAFR signaling plays a critical role in regulating postnatal RPC cell differentiation dynamics during retinal development, cell organization, and neuronal circuitry formation.

Abstract: ABSTRACTHigh pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) H5Nx of clade 2.3.4.4b have been circulating increasingly in both wild and domestic birds in recent years. In turn, this has led to an increase in the number of spillover events affecting mammals. In November 2022, an HPAIV H5N1 caused an outbreak in a zoological park in the south of France, resulting in the death of a Tibetan black bear (Ursus thibetanus) and several captive and wild bird species. We detected the virus in various tissues of the bear and a wild black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) found dead in its enclosure using histopathology, two different in situ detection techniques, and next-generation sequencing, all performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. Phylogenetic analysis performed on the hemagglutinin gene segment showed that bear and gull strains shared 99.998% genetic identity, making the bird strain the closest related strain. We detected the PB2 E627K mutation in minute quantities in the gull, whereas it predominated in the bear, which suggests that this mammalian adaptation marker was selected during the bear infection. Our results provide the first molecular and histopathological characterization of an H5N1 virus infection in this bear species.IMPORTANCEAvian influenza viruses are able to cross the species barrier between birds and mammals because of their high genetic diversity and mutation rate. Using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues, we were able to investigate a Tibetan black bear's infection by a high pathogenicity H5N1 avian influenza virus at the molecular, phylogenetic, and histological levels. Our results highlight the importance of virological surveillance programs in mammals and the importance of raising awareness among veterinarians and zookeepers of the clinical presentations associated with H5Nx virus infection in mammals.
