Abstract

The use of white phengitic micas with Si=3.3 p.f.u. to indicate Alpine high-pressure metamorphism is insufficient proof for the erosion of high-P metamorphic source rocks. Such a method is questionable because it does not provide buffer documentation and does not accurately establish the polytype of mica. That only locally preserved Variscan basement of the Alps does not contain blueschist relics does not connote that blueschist metamorphism during Variscan convergence did not occur.

60. Contact damage of hard and brittle thin films on ductile metallic substrates: An analysis of diamond-like carbon on titanium substrates

Abstract

Friction and wear minimizing coatings are crucial for applications in combustion engines and medical implants. Their performance is typically limited by mechanical failure especially due to local overload. In this work, the contact damage creation, evolution, and final morphology of hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated titanium (Ti) substrates are investigated. The influence of the DLC film thickness and the elastic–plastic deformation of the Ti on the contact damage are studied by microindentation and static finite-element analysis. Film thickness, indenter radius, and applied load as well as the elastic–plastic deformation of the Ti are shown to significantly affect contact damage. A failure plot is presented with the location of first failure in the DLC and compared to the experimental observation. In addition, a case study with variable fracture toughness of the DLC and its influence on the failure plot is shown. The stress distribution in the DLC follows a transition from a membrane-like to a plate-like deformation behavior upon increasing the DLC film thickness. Thin DLC films reveal increased cracking in the inner zone of the indent, while thicker DLC films reveal pronounced edge cracking. These edge cracks were correlated to pop-ins in force–displacement curves upon microindentation. Abstract

Come noto nella teoria delle decisioni il valore atteso di una particolare scelta non può essere sempre preso come criterio per determinare la decisione ottimale dal punto di vista razionale. Daniel Bernoulli in una fortunata memoria scritta nel 1731 e contenuta nel volume dei Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Imperialis Petropolitanae pubblicato nel 1738, per primo suggerì di utilizzare in luogo del valore atteso un valore morale o utilità attesa che una persona è disposta a spendere e che dipende dal patrimonio che possiede. La proposta di Bernoulli ha avuto grandi influenza ed eco, fino ai nostri giorni, in davvero molte discipline e diversi settori di ricerca. In particolare la prospettiva aperta dal saggio è alla base del cosiddetto approccio utilitarista, sia in filosofia che in politica ed economia, per il quale ogni decisione individuale dovrebbe essere ispirata dalla necessità di massimizzare la propria utilità attesa e l’insieme delle decisioni individuali dovrebbe andare nella direzione della massimizzazione del benessere collettivo. Senza inoltrarci qui in una discussione di questi od altri importanti aspetti, riassumiamo prima brevemente l’idea di Bernoulli ed il contesto in cui fu concepita e presentiamo poi la traduzione integrale del suo articolo dall’originale latino.

Abstract

The reconstructed southeastern margin of the Tethys ocean was compared with the present-day Galicia margin and their architectures and tectonic evolutions were found to be very similar. It is argued that asymmetric rifting was dominated by simple shear extension in the later stages of rifting, resulting in the exhumation of subcontinental mantle.

Abstract

The concept of turbidite has evolved so much since its original definition by Kuenen and Migliorini in 1950 – i.e. the deposit of turbidity currents exemplified by the sandy flysch successions of the Northern Apennines – that it is now used to define a variety of deposits, some of which have little in common with sandy flysch formations in terms of facies, geometry and geological significance. The extension of the concept to other geodynamic settings and deposits of non-siliciclastic composition is considered only briefly in the concluding sections. With the diffusion of the concept of turbidity current, in the 1950s and early 1960s, an entirely new branch of sedimentology came into being, concerned with the inventory of sedimentary structures, palaeocurrent measurements and bedding patterns. The most representative expression of this branch came from the ‘Dutch school’ of Philip H. Kuenen and his students. Between the late 1960s and the mid-1970s, there was a new development: facies analysis, in terms of modern environments and depositional systems. This development led to the introduction and discussion of ‘fan models’ that became an increasingly thorny issue with the accumulation of data from modern deep-marine settings.
