Purpose:The oncogenic role of circular RNAs (circRNA) has been well studied in cancers including colorectal cancer. However, tumor-suppressive circRNAs and the mechanism through which they exert their antitumor effects remain largely unknown. We aim to find out the critical tumor-suppressive circRNAs and their possibility to serve as gene therapy targets.Experimental Design:circRNA sequencing, gain-of-function and loss-of-function experiments, and transcriptomic analysis were performed to find tumor-suppressive and antitumor immunity effects of circRERE. Molecular biology experiments were conducted for mechanism exploration. Finally, we conducted adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver circRERE (circRERE-AAV) and evaluated circRERE-AAV alone and in combination with anti-PD-1 antibody in C57BL/6J mice bearing subcutaneous MC38 tumors.Results:circRERE is lowly expressed in colorectal cancer. Overexpression of circRERE inhibits the malignant behaviors of colorectal cancer in vitro and in vivo, while knockdown exhibits the opposite effects. The expression of circRERE is regulated by EP300, a histone acetyltransferase downregulated in colorectal cancer as well. Mechanistically, circRERE acts as a competitive endogenous RNA to sponge miR-6837-3p to upregulate MAVS expression, thereby activating type I IFN signaling and promoting antitumor immunity. Delivery of circRERE-AAV elicits significant antitumor effects, and combination treatment with circRERE-AAV and anti-PD-1 antibody exhibits synergistic effects on tumor growth in preclinical models of colorectal cancer.Conclusions:These results uncover modulatory axis constituting of EP300/circRERE/miR-6837-3p/MAVS and its essential roles in antitumor immunity, and demonstrate that circRERE-AAV might represent a new therapeutic avenue to prime immune responses and boost the effects of immunotherapy in clinic.

Surgical treatment of mitral valve diseases has become minimally invasive. This study analyzed the follow-up results of patients after mitral valve repairs (MVRep) using the da Vinci robot. The clinical data of patients who underwent minimally invasive MVRep using the da Vinci robot between January 2016 and June 2021 and completed follow-ups were prospectively collected. All operations were performed by the same surgeon and assistants. The data of a total of 120 patients were available for analysis, including 78 males (65%) and 42 females aged 49.9 ± 12.1 years (range, 19–73 years). Among them, there were 30 cases (25%) of mitral valve prolapse, 87 cases (72.5%) of mitral regurgitation, and 40 cases of combined tricuspid regurgitation. Edwards Physio II annuloplasty rings were implanted intraoperatively, followed by continuous sutures. The intraoperative cardiopulmonary bypass time was 152.32 ± 45.77 min, and the aortic occlusion time was 95.13 ± 5.64 min. After surgery, patients were followed up regularly with echocardiography with a follow-up period of 3–57 months postoperatively. One patient died in the early stage, and five patients required sternotomy due to postoperative bleeding. Follow-up transesophageal echocardiography showed that the end-systolic diameter, end-diastolic diameter, and ejection fraction of the left ventricular all improved after surgery. Among Chinese patients, MVRep using the da Vinci robot is a safe and effective surgical approach.

This study explored how middle-aged Korean American mothers perceive their children’s transition to adulthood and make sense of their changing parenting experience. Guided by a phenomenological approach, the analysis of semi-structured interviews with first-generation Korean immigrant mothers ( N = 10) of young adult children revealed their culturally unique perceptions of children’s independence and parenting approach during child launching. Specifically, to the mothers, the current child launching period meant extended parenthood until a child’s marriage which was viewed as the completion of full launching. While welcoming their children’s independence and autonomy, they believed that their children still needed parental support due to prolonged education and financial instability. These mothers actively engaged in their children’s decision-making process representing their reluctance to fully allow their children’s autonomy and felt ambivalent with the uncertainty of their children’s independence. The study findings have implications for providing Korean immigrant families with useful assistance and support in practical settings.

The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, which can reflect liver and renal function, is associated with poor prognosis. However, the prognostic performance of the modified MELD score in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has not been fully evaluated and compared. This study retrospectively enrolled 5324 patients. During a median follow-up of 2.85 years, 412 patients died. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves at 3 years indicated that the MELD including albumin (MELD-Albumin) score had the highest prognostic performance (AUC = .721) than the MELD score (AUC = .630), the MELD excluding the international normalized ratio (MELD-XI) score (AUC = .606), and the MELD including sodium (MELD-Na) score (AUC = .656) (all P < .001). The MELD-Albumin score, the MELD score, and the MELD-Na score were independent predictors of long-term mortality; however, the MELD-XI score was not when treated as a categorical variable ( P = .254). Adding the MELD-Albumin score to the model of clinical risk factors could improve the prognostic performance. For the subgroup analysis, the association between the MELD-Albumin score and long-term mortality was more pronounced in patients ≤75 years (interaction P value = .005). The MELD-Albumin score showed the strongest prognostic performance than the other versions of the MELD score in patients undergoing elective PCI.

Background Shrunken pore syndrome (SPS) as a novel phenotype of renal dysfunction is characterized by a difference in renal filtration between cystatin C and creatinine. The manifestation of SPS was defined as a cystatin C–based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) Methods and Results We retrospectively observed 5050 consenting patients from January 2012 to December 2018. Serum cystatin C and creatinine were measured and applied to corresponding 2012 and 2021 Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equations, respectively, to calculate the eGFR. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as a creatinine‐based eGFR 2 without dialysis. CA‐AKI was defined as an increase in serum creatinine ≥50% or 0.3 mg/dL within 48 hours after contrast medium exposure. Overall, 649 (12.85%) patients had SPS, and 324 (6.42%) patients developed CA‐AKI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that SPS was significantly associated with CA‐AKI after adjusting for potential confounding factors (odds ratio [OR], 4.17 [95% CI, 3.17–5.46]; P P P =0.012), non‐CKD and SPS (OR, 4.02 [95% CI, 2.98–5.39]; P P P =0.002). Conclusions SPS is a new and more powerful phenotype of renal dysfunction for predicting CA‐AKI than CKD and will bring new insights for an accurate clinical assessment of the risk of CA‐AKI.

Microwave microfluidic sensors have been employed for dielectric characterization of different liquids. Intuitively, the microfluidic channel plays a vital role in determining the sensor performance. In this article, for the first time, numerical optimization design of microfluidic channel route is carried out with the aim of improving the sensor sensitivity. Two swarm intelligence algorithms, i.e., particle-ant colony optimization algorithm and wolf colony algorithm, are implemented for the route optimization. Through the developed optimization procedure, the sensor sensitivity of the original design can be increased significantly. Several prototypes of optimized sensors are fabricated and tested, and they exhibit good capability in retrieving the liquid properties. In comparison with original complementary split-ring resonator-based sensor with a sensitivity of 0.308% for water measurement, the optimized sensor achieves a high sensitivity value of 0.55%, i.e., the sensor sensitivity is increased by 78.6% after optimization. The developed methodology can also be used in other designs, such as series LC -based sensor, whose sensitivity can be improved by about 50%. It is demonstrated that the developed methodology possesses good automatic optimization ability and universality for the optimal design of microwave microfluidic sensors.

This study examined if the association between older parents’ assets and life satisfaction is mediated by multiple children’s adult status attainment, given increasingly complicated processes of transition to adulthood and diminishing returns for parents’ extended investment in adult children. Disparate bodies of literature have indicated that assets help promoting older adults’ individual health and well-being; and parental assets also facilitate children’s reaching of adulthood. However, little attention has been paid to the ways in which the association between assets and life satisfaction might be explained by multiple children’s adult role statuses. Using the 5th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2014), this study analyzed a sample of parents aged 60 years and older with at least one living child aged between 30 and 50. For analyses, mediation models were estimated using SPSS PROCESS. Results showed that the association between non-financial assets and life satisfaction was partially mediated by one or more grown children’s college graduation and home ownership. Children’s employment, marriage, and parenthood did not play a major role in explicating the link between assets and life satisfaction in the contemporary socioeconomic context of Korea. Regarding policy and practice implications, comprehensive asset-building programs should be offered for parents to financially prepare for old age; parents should be informed that their overall life quality may hinge less on the lives of their children than might be typically expected, thus necessitating a more tailored approach to financially supporting their children during their transition to adulthood.

CMTR1, also called IFN-stimulated gene 95 kDa protein (ISG95), is elevated by viral infection in a variety of cells. However, the functions of CMTR1 in colorectal cancer (CRC), especially its roles in tumorigenesis and immune regulation, remain unclear. Here, we first identified CMTR1 as a novel oncogene in colorectal cancer. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database exploration and human tissue microarray (TMA) analysis, we found that CMTR1 expression was markedly higher in CRC tissues than in adjacent normal tissues. High CMTR1 expression was correlated with poor prognosis in CRC patients. Knockdown (KD) of CMTR1 significantly suppressed cell proliferation and tumorigenicity both in vitro and in vivo, whereas overexpression of CMTR1 resulted in the opposite effects. KEGG pathway analysis revealed differential enrichment in the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in colorectal cancer cells with CMTR1 KD. Mechanistically, suppression of CMTR1 expression inhibited RNAPII recruitment to the transcription start site (TSS) of STAT3 and suppressed STAT3 expression and activation. Furthermore, the efficacy of PD1 blockade immunotherapy was prominently enhanced in the presence of CMTR1 KD via increased infiltration of CD8 + T cells into the tumor microenvironment. Overall, it appears that CMTR1 plays a key role in regulating tumor cell proliferation and antitumor immunity.

One of the cleaning processes in semiconductor fabrication is the ashing process using oxygen plasma, which has been normally used N2 gas as additive gas to increase the ashing rate, and it is known that the ashing rate is strongly related to the concentration of oxygen radicals measured OES. However, by performing a comprehensive experiment of the O2 plasma ashing process in various N2/O2 mixing ratios and RF powers, our investigation revealed that the tendency of the density measured using only OES did not exactly match the ashing rate. This problematic issue can be solved by considering the plasma parameter, such as electron density. This study can suggest a method inferring the exact maximum condition of the ashing rate based on the plasma diagnostics such as OES, Langmuir probe, and cutoff probe, which might be useful for the next-generation plasma process.

Gastrointestinal dysfunction (GD) is a common complication after endotoxemia, which can further aggravate the progress of infection. Acupuncture uses metal needles of different shapes and techniques to stimulate specific points on the human body, which are effective in treating various diseases, including gastrointestinal diseases. We aimed at exploring the clinical effect of acupuncture on the recovery of visceral sensation, proximal gastric compliance, and autonomic nervous function in patients with septic GD. A total of 73 sepsis with GD patients were selected using modified single section ultrasonography combined with clinical symptoms in the First People’s Hospital of Lanzhou City during 2019. The participants were randomly allocated to routine-treatment (control group) and study group receiving acupuncture. The indexes before and after treatment included gastric residue, gastric dilatation, pressure and volume, gastric compliance, autonomic nerve function, APACHE II score, and infection index were measured and compared. Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the basic information of the two groups, including gastric volume and pressure, gastric residue, gastric compliance, autonomic nerve function, and APACHE II score. After treatment, the maximum gastric volume and pressure, gastric residue, and APACHE II score of the two groups were significantly improved ( P < 0.05 ). In addition, the maximum gastric volume and pressure of the study group were significantly higher, while gastric residual, autonomic nerve function, and APACHE II were significantly lower than those of the control group ( P < 0.05 ). However, our results showed that acupuncture did not further reduce inflammatory markers, including white blood cells, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin. To sum up, on the basis of basic treatment, the application of acupuncture can further improve the clinical symptoms of GD in patients with sepsis, enhance gastrointestinal motility, and improve autonomic nervous function, which is worthy of clinical application and promotion.

This article presents a novel class of dual-mode substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filters exploiting perturbed SIW rectangular cavities. By introducing metallized via-holes along the central line of an SIW rectangular cavity, the resonant frequency of TE101 mode can be shifted close to that of TE201 mode, thus creating a dual-mode resonator. This structure implements a doublet, which provides two poles and one or two transmission zeros (TZs). The pass bandwidth, spurious-free bandwidth, and positions of the TZs can be fully controlled by modifying the length of the perturbation, the side ratio of the rectangular cavity, and the offset of the input/output ports, respectively. Eight two-pole SIW filters are designed and investigated to demonstrate the high design flexibility. Moreover, a four-pole SIW filter with the asymmetric response and a five-pole SIW filter with quasi-elliptic response are designed, fabricated, and measured to describe the extension of the proposed approach to higher order filters.

Purpose: The study was aimed to examine components and provider’s characteristics of non-pharmacological intervention that affect delirium prevention in elderly inpatients. Additional effects on delirium prevention based on identified characteristics were explored.Methods: Studies were searched by using seven electronic databases and examined through Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) flow diagram. The Risk of Bias (ROB) and the Risk of Bias Assessment tool for Non-randomized Study (RoBANS) were used to evaluate the quality of each included study.Results: Seven studies were selected for the systematic review. Most of the selected studies had a low risk of bias. Interventions of each study and delirium outcome were heterogeneous. Each multi-component non-pharmacological intervention consisted on average of five interventions. Giving orientation and promoting early mobilization were included in every study. Interventions that included giving orientation, promoting early mobilization, and supporting nutrition significantly decreased delirium incidence. Moreover, when health care providers who have an intimate relationship with patients provided non-pharmacological interventions, delirium incidence has significantly decreased.Conclusion: Non-pharmacological intervention, such as giving orientation, promoting early mobilization, should be included to prevent delirium for elderly inpatients. It is important to include healthcare providers who have an intimate relationship or regular contact with patients in order to decrease delirium incidence.

Previous studies have demonstrated that non-invasive liver fibrosis scores (LFSs) are associated with kidney function deterioration. This study aimed to assess the predictive performance of LFSs in contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This retrospective study involved 5627 patients. The frequency of CA-AKI was 6.3% (n = 353). In a multivariate logistic analysis after adjustment, non-invasive LFSs, including fibrosis-5 score (FIB-5), fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4), aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR), and aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index were independent risk factors for CA-AKI (all P < .05), whereas the Forns score was not ( P > .05). The highest predictive performance was observed for FIB-5 (area under the curve [AUC] = .644) compared to other LFSs. A restricted cubic spline analysis confirmed approximately linear relationships between LFSs and risks of CA-AKI. Furthermore, adding FIB-5 (AUC = .747; net reclassification improvement [NRI] = .441, P < .001; integrated discrimination improvement [IDI] = .008, P < .001) or AAR (AUC = .747; NRI = .419, P < .001; IDI = .006, P = .010) to an established clinical risk model could significantly improve the prediction of CA-AKI. The LFSs were significantly associated with CA-AKI, possibly serving as predictive tools for early identification of CAD patients undergoing elective PCI that are at high risk of CA-AKI.

Background This study was designed to compare early outcomes associated with coronary artery bypass grafting for multi-vessel disease conducted using either minimally invasive or conventional off-pump techniques. Methods From January 2017 through January 2021, 582 patients with multi-vessel lesion coronary artery disease underwent either minimally invasive cardiac surgery coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS CABG) or conventional off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) treatment by our team at Anzhen Hospital. Patients in the MICS CABG group were propensity score-matched with those in the OPCABG at a 1:1 ratio (MICS CABG = 172; OPCABG = 172), using epidemiological data, preoperative clinical characteristics, and SYNTAX score as covariates. Perioperative outcomes and 6-month computed tomography angiography findings were compared between these groups. Results No significant differences between groups were observed with respect to 30-day postoperative mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke incidence. Surgical data indicated that the MICS CABG procedure was able to cover all three main arterial territories with a relatively low need for circulatory assistance. The MICS CABG procedure was associated with a longer operative duration, but was also associated with higher postoperative hemoglobin and activities of daily living index values as well as a shorter duration of postoperative hospitalization (P Conclusions MICS CABG is a safe, less invasive alternative to OPCABG when performing complete revascularization provided patients are properly selected, yielding similar in-hospital outcomes and 6-month graft patency rates together with an earlier return of physical function.

Obesity is characterized by excessive fat accumulation, chronic inflammation, and enhanced oxidative stress that can present a substantial risk for metabolic complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of red ginseng (RG), and its bio-transformed form (fermented RG, FRG) by microorganism on obese phenotype, lipid profile, and inflammation and oxidant profiles in rats fed a high-fat (HF) diet. FRG was prepared by fermentation of RG with Lactobacillus pentosus KCCM 12762P. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 8/group; 6 weeks old) were counterbalanced by initial weight into four groups and fed either a low-fat (LF; 10% kcal as fat), high-fat (HF; 45% kcal as fat), or HF diet supplemented with RG or FRG at 1% (w/w) in diet for 6 weeks. General phenotypes (body weight, energy intake, visceral adiposity), lipid and inflammatory profiles, and oxidative states were assessed. RG and FRG supplementation suppressed HF-induced upregulation of proinflammatory cytokine genes, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha, in both white adipose and liver tissues. Similarly, RG and FRG partially reversed HF-induced downregulation of antioxidant enzymes at the gene level. Concomitantly, RG and FRG reduced body weight gain, energy intake, visceral adiposity and the level of serum triglycerides. It is of note that better metabolic profile was observed with FRG than RG for lipid metabolism and inflammation, in the liver in particular. Taken together, we demonstrated that RG and FRG supplementation effectively protected from HF-induced metabolic disturbances by improving obese phenotypes, lipid and inflammatory profiles, and antioxidant defense system.

Introduction Although reports on angioembolization (AE) show favorable results for severe hepatic trauma, information is lacking on its benefit in the management and mechanisms of injury (MOI). This study examined patient outcomes with severe hepatic injuries to determine the association of in-hospital mortality with AE. The hypothesis is that AE is associated with increased survival in severe hepatic injuries. Methods Demographics, age, sex, MOI, shock index (SI), ≥6 units packed red blood cells (PRBCs) per hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit LOS, injury severity score (ISS), and AE were collected. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Patients were stratified into groups according to MOI, AE, and operative vs non-operative management. Multivariable logistic regression determined the independent association of mortality with AE vs no AE and operative vs nonoperative management and modeled the odds of mortality controlling for MOI, AE vs no AE, age and ISS groups, SI >.9, and ≥6 units PRBCs/LOS. Results From 2013 to 2018, 2462 patients (1744 blunt; 718 penetrating) were treated for severe hepatic injuries. AE was used in only 21% of patients. Mortality rates increased with higher ISS and age. AE was associated with mortality when compared to patients who did not undergo AE. The strongest associations with mortality were ISS ≥25, transfusion ≥ 6 units PRBCs/LOS, and age ≥65 years. Conclusions AE is underutilized in severe hepatic trauma. AE may be a valuable adjunct in the treatment of severe hepatic injuries especially in older patients and those needing exploratory laparotomy.

We investigate the dynamics of quantum coherence among multiple diamond nitrogen–vacancy centers (NVCs) coupled to a microsphere whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) cavity under external driving, through numerically simulating the Markovian quantum master equation. We show that quantum coherence (both normal quantum coherence and relative entropy) displays a series of damped oscillations under various experimental situations, which reflects the intricate interplay and competition between the dissipative effects and NVC-WGM coupling. Our results also show that normal quantum coherence is an upper bound for relative entropy. The feasibility of our proposal is supported by currently available experimental techniques.
