Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae) are among the most cost-effective and informative biodiversity indicator groups, conveying rich information about the status of habitats and faunas of an area. Yet their use for monitoring the mammal species, that are the main providers of the food for the dung beetles, has only recently been recognized. In the present work, we studied the diet of four endemic Madagascan dung beetles (Helictopleurus fissicollis (Fairmaire), H. giganteus (Harold), Nanos agaboides (Boucomont), and Epilissus splendidus Fairmaire) using high-throughput sequencing and amplicon metagenomics. For all beetle species, the ⅔–¾ of reads belonged to humans, suggesting that human feces are the main source of food for the beetles in the examined areas. The second most abundant were the reads of the cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus). We also found lower but significant number of reads of six lemur species belonging to three genera. Our sampling localities agree well with the known ranges of these lemur species. The amplicon metagenomics method proved a promising tool for the lemur inventories in Madagascar.

Despite the increasing interest in modern solutions for energy performance improvement in residential sector, a gap persists between literature development and current implementation practices on domestic heating and cooling through heat pumps technology. Homeowners are encouraged to manage their energy-related issues in a systematic manner to ensure continual improvement of energy efficiency. This paper attempts to explore the drivers and obstacles to the use of heat pumps system for domestic heating, cooling, and hot water production in the residential sector, in order to improve dwellings’ energy performance and reduce the carbon footprint. The study uses a regression model with a sample of 389 participants from Romania and shows that the availability of energy plans, voluntary association in an energy community, and mixed funding exert a positive influence, whereas bureaucracy, poor energy efficiency-related information, and fiscal incentives exert a negative influence on the intention of adopting heat pumps technology by homeowners.

Abstract Vanadate glasses exhibit semiconducting property at certain temperatures. This work demonstrates the conductivity of the composition 45V2O5–25B2O3–30P2O5, which is a new glass in the vanadium-boron-phosphorus ternary system that expands the glass forming area reported in literature data. The glass was obtained through a classical melt-quenching technique. The structural composition of the obtained glass was revealed with Raman spectroscopy and the amorphous characteristic has been highlighted with X-ray diffraction. The characteristic temperatures and the thermal expansion coefficient were determined by dilatometry. Based on the experimental measurements of electrical resistance, mathematical calculations were performed, resulting in a conductivity of 2.04·10−6 S/cm at 125 °C, and an activation energy of 42.91 kJ/mol for this glass. Impedance spectroscopy in DC and AC at 100 V and 100 Hz to 2 MHz, respectively, showed a lower activation energy of about 0.166 eV and transition temperatures of 24 °C and 11 °C, respectively. These results were compared with those from the literature considering the temperatures at which the reported conductivities were measured. Abstract We study a renormalizable theory that includes a heavy weak-singlet vectorlike lepton, τ ′ , that decays into a pseudoscalar boson and a tau lepton. We show that this can be the dominant decay mode of τ ′ provided the pseudoscalar couplings deviate from the case of a Nambu-Goldstone boson. For a range of parameters, the pseudoscalar is long-lived, and mainly decays into a photon pair at one loop, or into a tau pair at tree level. Electroweak production of τ ′+τ ′− leads to a rich phenomenology at colliders, including signals with many taus or photons. We analyze in detail the LHC signal involving two prompt taus and two displaced photon pairs. Particularly interesting is the case where the pseudoscalar has a decay length of a few meters and thus would typically deposit energy in the muon chambers of the CMS or ATLAS detectors.

Bioactive glass is currently considered a material with a high biocompatibility and has been used both in the field of bone regeneration and in the preparation of cosmetic products with the controlled release of active compounds. The present work involved a study on the synthesis of bioglass using the sol–gel process. The study aims to evaluate the influence of the treatment of bioglass with Polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG 4000) on its main characteristics. The surface characteristics of this material were obtained by nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis, using the standard BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) equation, the crystallinity by XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis, the surface structure by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), thermal stability by TGA (ThermoGravimetric Analyses), and chemical bonds changes by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy. After treatment with PEG 4000, the average diameter of the pores increased insignificantly, the crystallinity peak disappeared, and the SEM analysis highlighted several clusters of very small sizes.

It is essential to determine the concentrations of metals/metalloids in marine sediments and their contamination status to develop appropriate pollution control strategies and/or improve existing ones. Spatial distribution of aluminum (Al) and some trace elements, i.e., arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), accumulated in surface sediments of the north-western (NW) Black Sea (Romanian zone) was evaluated. Sediment samples were collected in 2019 from 32 stations located at water depths in the range of 12.7–149 m. The mean values ± standard deviations (SD) of element concentrations were as follows: 3.9 ± 1.6% for Al, 11.2 ± 10.2 mg/kg for As, 64.8 ± 27.0 mg/kg for Cr, 32.7 ± 15.0 mg/kg for Cu, 0.10 ± 0.09 mg/kg for Hg, 45.3 ± 23.8 mg/kg for Ni, 24.6 ± 9.6 mg/kg for Pb, and 68.0 ± 28.0 mg/kg for Zn. These values are not significantly different (p > 0.05) from those found in a previous study on surface sediments collected in 2018 from 22 stations located in the same area, but at lower water depths (13.5–67 m). Contamination factor (CF) was used to assess the contamination status of surface sediments. The mean values of CF (0.26–1.23) reveal low to moderate contamination with Pb and low contamination with the other elements. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis indicated that As, Cu, Ni, Hg, Pb, and Zn were associated with clay, silt, and organic matter, suggesting that these elements mainly came from the Danube discharges and also from local anthropogenic sources, whereas Al, Cr, and partly Hg, Pb, and Zn originated from rock/soil weathering and erosion. The concentration levels of As, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn, TOC, silt, and clay were higher in sediments collected from stations generally located at higher water depths (up to 118 m), suggesting that the TEs associated with the finer carriers were transported offshore by currents and waves, whereas the concentration levels of Al, Cr, Hg, and Zn were higher in sediments with lower levels of CaCO3 content (10.1–24.3%), collected from shallower stations (water depths of 12.7–42.0 m).

Hydrogen is the most plentiful chemical element in the visible universe. The mass composition of the visible universe is approximately 74% hydrogen, 24% helium, 1% oxygen, and the rest of all other chemical elements is about 1%. Hydrogen has the symbol H and the atomic number 1. It is placed in the first position in Mendeleev's periodic table of elements, in the upper left corner. It is an easily flammable, colorless, tasteless, odorless gas, and in nature, it is found mainly in the form of the diatomic molecule, H 2. With an atomic mass unit of 1.00794, hydrogen is the lightest chemical element. Etymologically, the word hydrogen is a combination of two Greek words hydor and gennan meaning: water producer. Hydrogen (H 2) has a very good calorific value per mass unit 143 MJ/kg which is 3.33 times more than the calorific value of kerosene or diesel fuel. Green hydrogen (clean hydrogen or renewable hydrogen) is produced by electrolysis of water (splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen) using electricity from renewable sources such as solar energy, wind energy, seawater waves energy, or tidal power. Green hydrogen is an environmentally-friendly power source (no harmful gases). This paper presents recent documentary research by the authors on green hydrogen as an environmentally-friendly power source: for space rocket launches and for hydrogen fuel cells used in the space shuttle as electrical power generators and drinking water generators from launch to return from the space mission; as fuel for a modified turboprop engine (Rolls-Royce and easyJet); as fuel for the European Destinus aircraft using the Jungfrau technology system for a planned hypersonic aircraft using a modified commercial afterburning engine; as fuel for modified gas turbine engines and hydrogen fuel cells to supply electrical power to supplement the gas turbine for the Airbus ZEROe aircraft, etc.

We describe a novel two-step approach for the synthesis of compounds with a hydroxyl-amide group (hydroxamic acids), which are widely known for their biological activity (histone deacetylase inhibitors, matrix metalloproteinases inhibitors and others). The first stage is the synthesis of N-substituted succinimide via the reaction of aromatic amine or carboxylic acid hydrazide with succinic anhydride. The second step involves the imide ring opening reaction by hydroxylamine. For both stages, universal synthetic methods are developed to exclude additional purification procedures for the target compounds. Sixteen hydroxamic acids are synthesized using the developed approach. Most of the compounds are obtained for the first time.

Abstract Chest computed tomography (CT) has played a valuable, distinct role in the screening, diagnosis, and follow-up of COVID-19 patients. The quantification of COVID-19 pneumonia on CT has proven to be an important predictor of the treatment course and outcome of the patient although it remains heavily reliant on the radiologist's subjective perceptions. Here, we show that with the adoption of CT for COVID-19 management, a new type of psychophysical bias has emerged in radiology. A preliminary survey of 40 radiologists and a retrospective analysis of CT data from 109 patients from two hospitals revealed that radiologists overestimated the percentage of lung involvement by 10.23 ± 4.65% and 15.8 ± 6.6%, respectively. A new random environment integer-valued autoregressive process of order 1 with discrete Laplace marginal distributions and with r states (abbrev. RrDLINAR1(M, A)) is introduced. It is shown that this process is distributed as a difference of two independent generalized random environment integer-valued autoregressive processes, when their orders are equal to 1. Other distributional and correlation properties of the RrDLINAR1(M, A) process are discussed. Strongly consistent Yule-Walker estimates are defined. The method of moments is implemented for different cases of simulated samples. Finally, the proposed model is applied to real-life data and the obtained results show its effectiveness.

Interpermafrost aquifers and areas of their discharge with seasonal ice covers are special permafrost-hydrogeological and hydrochemical systems that are not typical for the thick continuous permafrost zone of Central Yakutia. Differences in chlorofluorocarbon content indicate the anaerobic conditions of some springs suggesting microbial degradation of these compounds by methanogenic bacteria. In the discharge area of such springs, a sharp change in the geochemical conditions takes place leading to a transformation in the water chemical composition and boosting the processes of authigenic mineral formation in this buffer area. In current work we considered the geochemical system of the Sullar spring – the most northern and the least studied among interpermafrost groundwater discharge zones of the Lena River right bank. Intensive accumulation of authigenic minerals was found in the Sullar discharge area during field research. It was Fe compounds with bacterial mats as an opalescent film. Some researchers state the connection between the transformation of Fe compounds during permafrost melting and the migration and transformation of organic matter, including its consumption by microorganisms with further methane emission. We assumed that there is a relationship between the authigenic mineral formation and the content and emission of methane in the discharge area of the spring. This research is the first comprehensive description of the hydrochemistry of the interpermafrost water of the Sullar spring. The aim of the research was to explore influence of geochemical conditions and microbial communities on formation of authigenic minerals and methane fluxes, in particular the effect of the change of geochemical conditions due to groundwater discharge on Fe precipitation and to analyze the relation of that process with methane fluxes. For this purpose, we study water chemical composition of the Sullar spring, measure methane fluxes from water surface and analyze mineral and microbial composition of secondary mineral crusts and bottom eluvium collected near water sampling points. Methods. The main element content was determined by ion chromatography. The concentrations of the bicarbonate ion and dissolved carbon dioxide were calculated by the equilibrium modeling method based on the pH and Eh values of the system. The content of trace elements was measured by mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. To identify seasonal and annual variability, a retrospective analysis of the water chemical composition of the Sullar spring for the period from 1962 to 2020 was carried out. Methane fluxes were measured using the chamber method. The methane concentration was determined by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The features of the secondary mineral crusts and bottom eluvium were determined using a petrographic microscope. The chemical composition of individual mineral phases was evaluated using a scanning electron microscope equipped with a detector for energy dispersive X-ray spectral microanalysis. The DNA concentration was measured on a fluorimeter. Amplicon libraries were generated by polymer chain reaction with universal primers for the V4 region. Equilibrium modeling was carried out using the HCh software.

Although myofascial release techniques (MRTs) are commonly used to improve athletes’ range of motion (ROM), the effectiveness of MRTs may vary depending on the specific method performed. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of MRTs on the ROM performance of athletes. (2) Methods: The electronic databases of Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant articles published up to June 2023. This study utilized the PRISMA guidelines, and four databases were searched. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the PEDro scale, and the certainty of evidence was reported using the GRADE scale. The overall effect size was calculated using the robust variance estimator, and subgroup analyses were conducted using the Hotelling Zhang test. (3) Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The overall effect size results indicated that the myofascial release intervention had a moderate effect on ROM performance in athletes when compared to the active or passive control groups. (4) Conclusions: Alternative MRTs, such as myofascial trigger point therapy, can further improve the ROM performance of athletes. Gender, duration of intervention, and joint type may have a moderating effect on the effectiveness of MRTs.

Background: Chondral defects in the knee present a significant challenge due to their limited self-healing capacity, often leading to joint degeneration and functional disability. Current treatments, including surgical approaches like mosaicplasty and regenerative therapies such as bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) augmentation, aim to address these defects and improve patient outcomes. Materials and Methods: This study conducted a single-center, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of different treatment approaches and rehabilitation protocols for chondral defects. Thirty-seven subjects presenting with symptomatic chondral or osteochondral defects (>3 cm2) in the weight-bearing region of the femoral condyle were partitioned into three groups, and underwent mosaicplasty with or without BMAC augmentation, followed by either a 6-week or 12-week rehabilitation program. Group 1 (n = 10) received mosaicplasty combined with BMAC augmentation and engaged in a twelve-week two-phase rehabilitation protocol. Group 2 (n = 15) underwent mosaicplasty alone and participated in the same twelve-week two-phase rehabilitation regimen. Meanwhile, Group 3 (n = 12) underwent mosaicplasty and underwent a shorter six-week one-phase rehabilitation program. Clinical assessments were performed using the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, goniometry for the knee’s range of motion (ROM), manual muscle testing (MMT) for quadricep strength, and the Western Ontario and McMaster University Arthritis Index (WOMAC) for functional evaluation in three test phases. Results: Significant differences in WOMAC scale scores were observed between the three groups at the intermediate (F(2, 34) = 5.24, p < 0.010) and final (F(2, 34) = 111, p < 0.000) stages, with post hoc Tukey tests revealing variations shared among all three groups. The between-group analysis of the VAS scale demonstrated no statistically significant difference initially (F(2, 34) = 0.18, p < 0.982), but significant differences emerged following the intermediate (F(2, 34) = 11.40, p < 0.000) and final assessments (F(2, 34) = 59.87, p < 0.000), with post hoc Tukey tests revealing specific group variations, notably between Group 1 and both Group 2 and Group 3, and also between Group 3 and Group 2. The between-group analysis of quadricep muscle strength using MMT scores revealed no statistically significant differences initially (F(2, 34) = 0.376, p < 0.689) or following the intermediate assessment (F(2, 34) = 2.090, p < 0.139). The one-way ANOVA analysis showed no significant difference in the knee ROM initially (F(2, 34) = 1.037, p < 0.366), but significant differences emerged following intermediate (F(2, 34) = 9.38, p < 0.001) and final assessments (F(2, 34) = 11.60, p < 0.000). Post hoc Tukey tests revealed significant differences between Groups 1 and 2, Groups 1 and 3, and Groups 2 and 3 at intermediate and final assessments. Conclusions: The patients who received BMAC augmentation and completed a 12-week rehabilitation protocol had significantly better outcomes in pain relief, knee function, and ROM when compared to those who did not receive BMAC augmentation or those who completed a shorter rehabilitation period. Our findings suggest that combining mosaicplasty with BMAC augmentation and a comprehensive rehabilitation program can lead to superior clinical outcomes for patients with chondral defects in the knee.

Background and Objectives: Defined by chronic pain, rheumatic diseases are often co-occurring with anxiety and depression. Among the available psychological interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapies have an already-proven efficiency in these cases. However, the need to adjust their structure became ubiquitous during the post-pandemic period. Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate the impact of a single-session, process-based cognitive-behavioral intervention for patients with rheumatic conditions within an in-patient setting. Materials and Methods: A total of 31 participants (mean age 58.9 years) completed the single-session intervention. Assessments were conducted prior to the intervention, post-intervention and after one month. Results: Pearson’s correlations, paired samples T tests and a covariance analysis based on the Linear Mixed Model were performed for exploring the relations between baseline variables and evaluating the impact of the SSI intervention. Immediately after the intervention, a significant reduction in cognitive fusion (p = 0.001, d = 1.78), experiential avoidance (p = 0.001, d = 1.4) and dysfunctional behavioral processes was observed. At the one-month evaluation, participants reported decreased pain (p = 0.001, d = 1.11), anxiety (p = 0.004, d = 0.55) and depression (p = 0.001, d = 0.72). Conclusions: The single-session, process-based approach represents a promising intervention in healthcare contexts, as an integrative part of a multimodal rehabilitation treatment in patients with rheumatic conditions.

This systematic review critically evaluates the association between serum Vitamin D levels and dental caries incidence in the permanent teeth of children and adolescents. The search strategy comprised three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase), up to November 2023, targeting studies on the correlation between Vitamin D and dental caries in permanent dentition. The eligibility criteria focused on observational studies involving children and adolescents aged 12 to 19 years with permanent dentition. The screening process, guided by the PRISMA guidelines and the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale for quality assessment, resulted in the inclusion of eight studies conducted across various global regions from 2013 to 2023. The analysis revealed that Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were prevalent among the study populations, ranging from 17.3% to 69.4%. The mechanical-hydraulic steering system of a military training aircraft is a technical problem for specialized engineers and it must be investigated and solved in a scientific manner using theoretical knowledge, calculus programs such as Mathcad, and CAD applications for design such as CATIA V5 which allows the preservation of practical experience and favors its dissemination for future similar calculation. The scope of this calculus is to demonstrate that the active moment developed by the two hydraulic cylinders is always bigger than the resisting moment opposing the steering action of the nose landing gear wheel generated by the frictional forces between the wheel and the running way.

Abstract Background Everybody has the right to decide whether to receive specific medical treatment or not and to provide their free, prior and informed consent to do so. As dementia progresses, people with Alzheimer’s dementia (PwAD) can lose their capacity to provide informed consent to complex medical treatment. When the capacity to consent is lost, the autonomy of the affected person can only be guaranteed when an interpretable and valid advance directive exists. Advance directives are not yet common in Germany, and their validity is often questionable. Once the dementia diagnosis has been made, it is assumed to be too late to write an advance directive. One approach used to support the completion of advance directives is ‘Respecting Choices’®—an internationally recognised, evidence-based model of Advance Care Planning (ACP), which, until now, has not been evaluated for the target group of PwAD. This study’s aims include (a) to investigate the proportion of valid advance directives in a memory clinic population of persons with suspected AD, (b) to determine the predictors of valid advance directives, and (c) to examine whether the offer of ACP can increase the proportion of valid advance directives in PwAD. Method We intend to recruit at least N = 250 participants from two memory clinics in 50 consecutive weeks. Of these, the first 25 weeks constitute the baseline phase (no offer of ACP), the following 25 weeks constitute the intervention phase (offer of ACP). The existence and validity of an advance directive will be assessed twice (before and after the memory clinic appointment). Moreover, potential predictors of valid advance directives are assessed. Discussion The results of this study will enhance the development of consent procedures for advance directives of PwAD based on the ACP/Respecting Choices (R) approach. Therefore, this project contributes towards increasing the autonomy and inclusion of PwAD and the widespread acceptance of valid advance directives in PwAD. This paper presents the experimental research method of a hydraulic cylinder used for steering the front landing gear wheel. A mechanical-hydraulic steering system is operated by two interchangeable hydraulic cylinders acting in tandem to rotate the movable sub-assembly that contains the front landing gear wheel. Each hydraulic cylinder is designed with a built-in throttle to equalize the speed of the hydraulic cylinder rod traveling in both directions of movement (extension and retraction). During the experiments, three constructive variants of the built-in throttle will be used to obtain the optimal variant.

Abstract Within a chiral SU(15) gauge theory in which the Standard Model fermions are bound states of massless preons, we show that proton-decay operators are likely induced at the compositeness scale, Λpre. Our estimate of the limit imposed by searches for proton decays is Λpre > 104 TeV1/2 C 8 1 / 4 m Q 1 / 2 $$ {C}_8^{1/4}\ {m}_{\mathcal{Q}}^{1/2} $$ , where C 8 is a rescaled coefficient of an 8-prebaryon operator induced by SU(15) dynamics, and m Q $$ {m}_{\mathcal{Q}} $$ is the mass of a composite vectorlike quark. The latter has a lower limit related to the mass of a composite vectorlike lepton, which in turn is required by LHC searches to be above 1 TeV. For C 8 in the 10 −5 – 1 range, the lower limit on Λpre varies between 3 × 103 TeV and 5 × 104 TeV. We point out that exotic proton decay modes, into a π + and a heavy right-handed neutrino, could be observed using the Super-Kamiokande or DUNE detectors.

Abstract Background Fluid overload and venous congestion are associated with morbi-mortality in the ICU (intensive care unit). Administration of diuretics to correct the fluid balance is common, although there is no strong relationship between the consequent fluid loss and clinical improvement. The aim of the study was to evaluate the ability of the portal pulsatility index, the renal venous impedance index, and the VEXUS score (venous ultrasound congestion score) to predict appropriate diuretic-induced fluid depletion. Methods The study had a prospective, observational, single-center observational design and was conducted in a university-affiliated medico-surgical ICU. Adult patients for whom the clinician decided to introduce loop diuretic treatment were included. Hemodynamic and ultrasound measurements (including the portal pulsatility index, renal venous impedance index and VEXUS score) were performed at inclusion and 2 hours after the initiation of the diuretics. The patients’ characteristics were noted at inclusion, 24 h later, and at ICU discharge. The appropriate diuretic-induced fluid depletion was defined by a congestive score lower than 3 after diuretic fluid depletion. The congestive score included clinical and biological parameters of congestion. Results Eighty-one patients were included, and 43 (53%) patients presented with clinically significant congestion score at inclusion. Thirty-four patients (42%) had an appropriate response to diuretic-induced fluid depletion. None of the left- and right-sided echocardiographic parameters differed between the two groups. The baseline portal pulsatility index was the best predictor of appropriate response to diuretic-induced fluid depletion (AUC = 0.80, CI95%:0.70–0.92, p = 0.001), followed by the renal venous impedance index (AUC = 0.72, CI95% 0.61–0.84, p = 0.001). The baseline VEXUS score (AUC of 0.66 CI95% 0.53–0.79, p = 0.012) was poorly predictive of appropriate response to diuretic-induced fluid depletion. Conclusion The portal pulsatility index and the renal venous impedance index were predictive of the appropriate response to diuretic-induced fluid depletion in ICU patients. The portal pulsatility index should be evaluated in future randomized studies.

Performance in the health system is one of the determining factors of the growth and development of a state, because the well-being of people depends on the quality of the health system, on the life expectancy of citizens. A healthy person directly contributes to the increase of labor productivity, as well as to its contribution to the state budget, through the payment of taxes. Performance in the health system can only be achieved if we understand that at the center of the system is the patient, with his needs for medical services that must be met safely.

The article outlines various approaches to developing a fuzzy decision algorithm designed for monitoring and issuing warnings about driver drowsiness. This algorithm is based on analyzing EOG (electrooculography) signals and eye state images with the aim of preventing accidents. The drowsiness warning system comprises key components that learn about, analyze and make decisions regarding the driver’s alertness status. The outcomes of this analysis can then trigger warnings if the driver is identified as being in a drowsy state. Driver drowsiness is characterized by a gradual decline in attention to the road and traffic, diminishing driving skills and an increase in reaction time, all contributing to a higher risk of accidents. In cases where the driver does not respond to the warnings, the ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) system should intervene, assuming control of the vehicle’s commands.

Protected areas pose a major interest in the current context in which natural habitats are very fragmented as a result of economic development. The ROSCI0076 Dealul Mare-Hîrlău site represents the largest protected area from Moldova’s Plateau where forest habitats occupy a majority surface. A total number of 10 Natura 2000 forest habitats were identified on the site’s surface. Among them, the majority are 91Y0 - Dacian oak hornbeam forests and 9130 - Asperulo-Fagetum beech forests. These are comprised of 79% natural forests, while planted forests represent 19%. The main age ranges between 40 and 80 years, with compact areas with young forests, as well as with forests older than 100 years. Forest habitats are stable from an ecological point of view, ensuring optimum conditions for the development and colonization of species presented on the site’s map.

This study investigated the effects of dietary replacement of soybean meal (SBM) with graded levels of pea seeds (PS) on the gastrointestinal function of turkeys. Seeds of 2 pea varieties, a colored-flowered variety and a white-flowered variety (CFP and WFP, respectively) were fed to 56-d-old birds for 8 wk. A total of 539 female Hybrid turkeys were allocated to 7 groups, each group consisted of 7 pens with 11 birds per pen. The experiment had a 2-factorial design, with 3 dietary inclusion levels of PS (100, 200 and 300 g/kg) and 2 pea varieties (CFP and WFP). The control group (diets without PS) was compared with CFP and WFP treatments by simple contrast analysis. In comparison with CFP seeds, WFP seeds contained 7-fold less tannins (0.67 vs. 4.66 g/kg) and less non-starch polysaccharides (NSP, 117.8 vs. 132.7 g/kg), but more trypsin inhibitors (1.34 vs. 0.98 g/kg) and starch (489 vs. 455 g/kg). A rise in the PS content of diets from 100 to 200 and 300 g/kg increased the weight of the small intestine (P = 0.031) and the dry matter (DM) content of intestinal digesta (P = 0.001), but it had no effect on the pH of digesta. Only the highest PS content differentiated the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the small intestinal digesta (WFP > CFP, P = 0.008), whereas PS did not cause any changes in the morphological parameters of the small intestinal mucosa. The dietary inclusion of PS had no influence on the levels of acetate, butyrate, putrefactive SCFAs or total SCFAs in the cecal contents. Apart from increasing the activities of β-glucosidase (P = 0.017) and β-galactosidase (P = 0.025), pea varieties did not affect the activities of the analyzed cecal microbial enzymes. However, CFP seeds decreased the DM content (P = 0.041) and increased the pH of cecal digesta, compared with WFP seeds (P = 0.013). The results of this study, pointing to a few differences in the functional parameters of the small intestine and cecum, indicate that tannins are not a factor differentiating the suitability of CFP and WFP seeds in the nutrition of finisher turkeys. The inclusion of PS at 200 and 300 g/kg of the diet reduces the content of SBM and wheat in turkey diets, which has a positive effect on gastrointestinal function.

Interferon alpha (IFNα) gene therapy is emerging as a new treatment option for patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Adenoviral vectors expressing IFNα have shown clinical efficacy treating bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG)-unresponsive bladder cancer (BLCA). However, transient transgene expression and adenoviral immunogenicity may limit therapeutic activity. Lentiviral vectors can achieve stable transgene expression and are less immunogenic. In this study, we evaluated lentiviral vectors expressing murine IFNα (LV-IFNα) and demonstrate IFNα expression by transduced murine BLCA cell lines, bladder urothelium, and within the urine following intravesical instillation. Murine BLCA cell lines (MB49 and UPPL1541) were sensitive to IFN-mediated cell death after LV-IFNα, whereas BBN975 was inherently resistant. Upregulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6) predicted sensitivity to IFN-mediated cell death mediated by caspase signaling, which when inhibited abrogated IFN-mediated cell killing. Intravesical therapy with LV-IFNα/Syn3 in a syngeneic BLCA model significantly improved survival, and molecular analysis of treated tumors revealed upregulation of apoptotic and immune-cell-mediated death pathways. In particular, biomarker discovery analysis identified three clinically actionable targets, PD-L1, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and ALDHA1A, in murine tumors treated with LV-IFNα/Syn3. Our findings warrant the comparison of adenoviral and LV-IFNα and the study of novel combination strategies with IFNα gene therapy for the BLCA treatment.

To address diverse challenges and accelerate the adoption of PV technology, innovative and cost-effective PV assemblies are essential. The Analysis of Interconnected Decision Areas—the AIDA method—offers a promising approach to achieving this goal by providing a structured framework for identifying, assessing, and optimizing the design of PV assemblies. The aim is to demonstrate how AIDA can be effectively used to identify and assess potential improvements in PV assembly design, leading to the development of more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly PV systems. For this, out of 54 combinations, 10 of them were retained, so that in the end only two possible solutions obtained by applying AIDA remained. Both structures were assessed by applying FEM, analysing data regarding equivalent von Mises stresses and displacements but also the existence of stress hotspots. A design insight study was also carried out. Also, the models were first built by additive manufacturing (3D printing). These models were evaluated by a manufacturer so that the evaluation matrix and criteria satisfaction matrix could be successfully completed. Therefore, AIDA can be successfully used in solving problems in product design in the field of mounting structures for PV panels. Depending on the manufacturer’s capabilities, the intended functions can be adapted quickly, because AIDA is quite simple to apply if the data of the problem are known very well. Following the application of the FEM it was concluded that the surfaces as simple as possible are to be followed in the design of components. Also, an assessment of environmental impact was successfully undertaken by means of software assistance. The decision to use one option or another is a subjective one. If the technical data are followed, then one type of structure is the one that the manufacturer should adopt as a solution to the problem. However, if the manufacturer considers that the impact on the environment is important and dedicates resources in this direction, then a different type of structure should be adopted.

Animal husbandry is one of man’s oldest occupations. It began with the domestication of animals and developed continuously, in parallel with the evolution of human society. The selection and improvement of goats in Romania was not a clearly defined objective until around 1980. In recent years, with the increasing economic value given to goats, breeding programs are becoming established. In Romania, a few goat genetic studies using microsatellites and mtDNA have been carried out; however, a systematic characterization of the country’s goat genomic resources remains missing. In this study, we analyzed the genetic variability of Carpatina goats from four distinct geographical areas (northern, north-eastern, eastern and southern Romania), using the Illumina OvineSNP60 (RefSeq ARS1) high-density chip for 67 goats. Heterozygosity values, inbreeding coefficients and effective population size across all autosomes were calculated for those populations that inhabit high- and low-altitude and high- and low-temperature environments. Diversity, as measured by expected heterozygosity (HE), ranged from 0.413 in the group from a low-temperature environment to 0.420 in the group from a high-temperature environment. Within studied groups, the HT (high temperature) goats were the only group with a positive but low average inbreeding coefficient value, which was 0.009. After quality control (QC) analysis, 46,965 SNPs remained for analysis (MAF < 0.01). LD was calculated for each chromosome separately. The Ne has been declining since the time of domestication, having recently reached 123, 125, 185 and 92 for the HA (high altitude), LA (low altitude), HT (high temperature) and LT (low temperature) group, respectively. Our study revealed a low impact of inbreeding in the Carpatina population, and the Ne trend also indicated a steep decline in the last hundred years. These results will contribute to the genetic improvement of the Carpatina breed.

Background: Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) represent a significant clinical problem, and standard approaches to nerve repair have limitations. Recent breakthroughs in 3D printing and stem cell technologies offer a promising solution for nerve regeneration. The main purpose of this study was to examine the biomechanical characteristics in muscle tissue distal to a nerve defect in a murine model of peripheral nerve regeneration from physiological stress to failure. Methods: In this experimental study, we enrolled 18 Wistar rats in which we created a 10 mm sciatic nerve defect. Furthermore, we divided them into three groups as follows: in Group 1, we used 3D nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) and adipose stem cells (ASCs) in seven rats; in Group 2, we used only 3D NGCs for seven rats; and in Group 3, we created only the defect in four rats. We monitored the degree of atrophy at 4, 8, and 12 weeks by measuring the diameter of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle. At the end of 12 weeks, we took the TA muscle and analyzed it uniaxially at 10% stretch until failure. Results: In the group of animals with 3D NGCs and ASCs, we recorded the lowest degree of atrophy at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks after nerve reconstruction. At 10% stretch, the control group had the highest Cauchy stress values compared to the 3D NGC group (0.164 MPa vs. 0.141 MPa, p = 0.007) and the 3D NGC + ASC group (0.164 MPa vs. 0.123 MPa, p = 0.007). In addition, we found that the control group (1.763 MPa) had the highest TA muscle stiffness, followed by the 3D NGC group (1.412 MPa), with the best muscle elasticity showing in the group in which we used 3D NGC + ASC (1.147 MPa). At failure, TA muscle samples from the 3D NGC + ASC group demonstrated better compliance and a higher degree of elasticity compared to the other two groups (p = 0.002 and p = 0.008). Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that the combination of 3D NGC and ASC increases the process of nerve regeneration and significantly improves the compliance and mechanical characteristics of muscle tissue distal to the injury site in a PNI murine model.

This paper presents the authors’ recent documentary research on the benefits of using LED lighting products for military aircraft for high-speed take-offs, landings, and taxiing. LED lighting products offer numerous advantages over conventional incandescent aircraft bulb lighting (Halogen and Xenon bulb-based lighting technologies). In terms of energy consumption, LED lighting products are ten times more efficient than incandescent lighting, designed and produced to consume much less electricity than conventional lighting, and do not require a high voltage external power supply. LED lights maintain their full light output even at lower aircraft engine rotation. The LED lights are solid-state mounted devices that can tolerate high levels of shock and vibration without failing. The LED lights for high-speed take-offs, landings, and taxiing offer extraordinary performance that will truly transform the flying experience during nighttime.

IntroductionRight ventricular (RV) dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension (PH) have been previously associated with unfavorable outcomes in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), but little is known about the effect of right ventricle (RV) to pulmonary artery (PA) coupling. Our study aimed to evaluate the determinant factors and the prognostic value of RV-PA coupling in patients undergoing TAVI.MethodsOne hundred sixty consecutive patients with severe AS were prospectively enrolled, between September 2018 and May 2020. They underwent a comprehensive echocardiogram before and 30 days after TAVI, including speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) for myocardial deformation analysis of the left ventricle (LV), left atrium (LA), and RV function. Complete data on myocardial deformation was available in 132 patients (76.6 ± 7.5 years, 52.5% men) who formed the final study population. This paper presents the authors’ recent documentary research on the benefits of using the Fly-by-Light system in Military aircraft and the understanding of why Fly-by-Light (FBL) is very promising for the further development of military aircraft. The Fly-by-Light flight system is characterized by the fact that the input control signals from the pilot, motion data, and air data sensors are sent to the flight control computer and from there to the actuators of the control surfaces through a fiber optic cable and the feedback from actuators sensors or other signals is received in the same way, through fiber optic cable connected to the aircraft flight control computer. The first major step in the evolution of flight control systems was the replacement of mechanical flight control systems with a Fly-by-Wire (FBW) flight control system. The next major step is the replacement of Fly-by-Wire (FBW) flight control system with a Fly-by-Light (FBL) flight control system which has some significant advantages such as: reducing the weight of the system, increasing the speed and volume of information transmitted through fiber-optic cable (input and feedback signals), keeping intact the accuracy of the signals along the entire length of the circuit; also, the optical fibers do not present any risk of fire, as they carry only light signals, and the temperature, humidity, and severe weather conditions do not affect the fiber optic cable, which can withstand a pressure of about 0.69 - 1.38 MPa without damaging the cable, unaffected by Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) generated by nuclear blasts. All the advantages listed above provide tactical and safety advantages for the military aircraft and its crew.

Taking into consideration the current context, Sign Language remote interpreting is a topic often encountered in accessibility for Deaf people. Our study explores the aspects of remote Sign Language interpreting in Romania during the Covid-19 pandemic. After a short theoretic framework about remote interpreting and particularities in the context of using Sign Language, we resume the findings of our investigation in which we used survey data from 39 Romanian Sign Language Interpreters active in the pandemic context. We emphasize advantages and disadvantages of this variant of Sign Language interpreting and in the end, we share some findings and recommendations from the field practice.

Abstract Although having been the subject of intense research over the years, cardiac function quantification from MRI is still not a fully automatic process in the clinical practice. This is partly due to the shortage of training data covering all relevant cardiovascular disease phenotypes. We propose to synthetically generate short axis CINE MRI using a generative adversarial model to expand the available data sets that consist of predominantly healthy subjects to include more cases with reduced ejection fraction. We introduce a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict the end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, and implicitly the ejection fraction from cardiac MRI without explicit segmentation. The left ventricle volume predictions were compared to the ground truth values, showing superior accuracy compared to state-of-the-art segmentation methods. We show that using synthetic data generated for pre-training a CNN significantly improves the prediction compared to only using the limited amount of available data, when the training set is imbalanced.

Abstract Introduction Hepatic steatosis is associated with cardiac systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Therefore, we evaluated metabolites and their potential cardiovascular effects in metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Materials and methods We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 75 participants (38 MAFLD and 37 controls). Hepatic steatosis was confirmed by hepatic ultrasonography and SteatoTestTM. Cardiac function was assessed using echocardiography. Metabolomic analysis was conducted using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry.
