Abstract

Functionalization of ultrasmall semiconductor nanoparticles to develop new luminescent probes that are optically bright, stable in aqueous environments, and sized comparably to small organic fluorophores would be of considerable utility for myriad applications in biology. Here, we report one of the first examples of thermal hydrosilylation between a bi-functional alkene and ultrasmall (∼1 nm) H-passivated silicon nanoparticles (Si-np-H) to prepare strongly luminescent, water stable, carboxyl functionalized nanoparticles (Si-np-COOH). Nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared absorption spectroscopy (FTIR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), and photoluminescence spectroscopy are used to characterize the Si-np dispersions. Based on the SEC and FTIR data, a reaction scheme is proposed to account for side products formed through a free radical cross-linking mechanism. The Si-np-COOH may find use in applications such as biomolecular labeling and biological imaging. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2006.

Abstract

Studying the properties and stability of silicon nanoparticles (Si-np) in aqueous environments may lead to novel applications in biological systems. In this work, we use absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to characterize ultrasmall Si-np prepared through anodic etching and ultrasonic fractionation of a crystalline Si wafer. Their behavior is studied over time in 2-propanol and during treatments with water, NaOH, HCl, and H(2)O(2). The observed population is divided into two types of material: bright species consisting of well-etched Si-np, approximately 1 nm in diameter, and dark species derived from partially etched or aggregated Si structures. The dark material is seen by its scattering in the 2-propanol and water solutions and is largely removed via precipitation with the NaOH or HCl treatment. The bright material includes three distinct species with their respective emissions in the UV-B, UV-A, and hard-blue regions of the spectrum. The hard-blue PL is shown to have a simple pH dependence with a pK(a) approximately 3, providing an important insight into its chemical origin and signaling for possible application of Si-np as environmental probes. Our results offer some potential for tailoring the PL properties of ultrasmall Si-np through control of their surface chemistry.

69. Helical peptide structure improves conductivity and stability of solid electrolytes

Abstract

Ion transport is essential to energy storage, cellular signalling and desalination. Polymers have been explored for decades as solid-state electrolytes by either adding salt to polar polymers or tethering ions to the backbone to create less flammable and more robust systems. New design paradigms are needed to advance the performance of solid polymer electrolytes beyond conventional systems. Here the role of a helical secondary structure is shown to greatly enhance the conductivity of solvent-free polymer electrolytes using cationic polypeptides with a mobile anion. Longer helices lead to higher conductivity, and random coil peptides show substantially lower conductivity. The macrodipole of the helix increases with peptide length, leading to larger dielectric constants. The hydrogen bonding of the helix also imparts thermal and electrochemical stability, while allowing for facile dissolution back to monomer in acid. Peptide polymer electrolytes present a promising platform for the design of next-generation ion-transporting materials.

Abstract

Thermoelectric transport, i.e., charge current driven by a temperature gradient (Seebeck effect) and heat current driven by an electric current (Peltier effect), provides fundamental insights on microscopic thermodynamics and kinetics of materials and enables devices that convert between heat and electrical work. The ionic Seebeck effect in ionic thermoelectric materials was reported more than one century ago while the reciprocal phenomenon, the ionic Peltier effect, remains unexplored due to experimental challenges. This work reports experimental observations and quantitative measurements of the ionic Peltier effect by an ultrasensitive temperature difference metrology (UTDM) with an extremely high temperature difference resolution up to 4 uK. UTDM enables the probing of sub-mK-level temperature responses of ionic Peltier effect even in the presence of parasitic Joule heat. We observe high ionic Peltier coefficients (up to 450 mV) in liquid electrolytes commonly used in Li-ion batteries. These high Peltier coefficients are approximately one order of magnitude greater than the Peltier coefficients of well-optimized electronic thermoelectric materials and comparable to Peltier coefficients of lightly doped silicon. Our work provides a platform to study the microscopic physics of ionic Peltier effect and understanding the thermodynamics and kinetics of ion transport in Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

Recent progress in soft material chemistry and enabling methods of 3D and 4D fabrication—emerging programmable material designs and associated assembly methods for the construction of complex functional structures—is highlighted. The underlying advances in this science allow the creation of soft material architectures with properties and shapes that programmably vary with time. The ability to control composition from the molecular to the macroscale is highlighted—most notably through examples that focus on biomimetic and biologically compliant soft materials. Such advances, when coupled with the ability to program material structure and properties across multiple scales via microfabrication, 3D printing, or other assembly techniques, give rise to responsive (4D) architectures. The challenges and prospects for progress in this emerging field in terms of its capacities for integrating chemistry, form, and function are described in the context of exemplary soft material systems demonstrating important but heretofore difficult-to-realize biomimetic and biologically compliant behaviors., QC 20221125
