Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a project in order to verify -without the need of knowing the distance CERN-Gran Sasso- the discovery made by the OPERA Collaboration concerning the speed of the CERN neutrinos. The project consists of two parts. A simple one and a less simple one. Both have the great advantage of being totally independent of the knowledge of the distance, ≃ 732 km, between the two Labs, CERN and LNGS, where the neutrinos are produced and detected, respectively. The "simple" version of this project is based on the high-energy horizontal cosmic muons, which traverse LVD and OPERA detectors, thus allowing to cross-calibrate the timing systems of both experiments in a way which is totally independent of the TOF measurements of CNGS. This component of the project is being studied in collaboration with the OPERA group, as the time stabilities of both experiments are needed. In fact it is since a long time that the two groups are engaged with this problem. In this paper we will present and discuss the "less simple" part which allows to establish, at the highest possible level of accuracy, if (v > c) effects really exist.

Abstract

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) project is devoted to search extremely high energy cosmic rays, by means of an array of hodoscopes distributed over the Italian territory. These stations are based on the use of Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC), that have excellent time resolution and good tracking capability. They are installed in selected secondary school institutes, where students are involved in the research work. In this article the analysis of the first extensive air shower detected is presented.

Abstract

To evaluate the influence of at least three abutment changes against the placement of a definitive abutment, which was no longer removed, on hard and soft tissue changes, and to compare the clinical outcomes of immediate non-occlusal loading versus conventional loading.Eighty patients requiring one single crown or one fixed partial prosthesis supported by a maximum of three implants were randomised, after implants were placed with more than 35 Ncm, according to a parallel group design to receive definitive abutments which were loaded immediately (definitive abutment or immediate loading group) or transmucosal abutments which experienced delayed loading after 3 months and were removed at least three times: 1) during the making of the impression (3 months after implant placement); 2) when checking the zirconium core of titanium abutments at single crowns or the fitting of the metal structure at prostheses supported by multiple implants; 3) at delivery of the definitive prostheses (repeated disconnection or conventional loading group). Patients were treated in four centres and each patient contributed to the study with only one prosthesis followed for 4 months after initial loading. Outcome measures were: prosthesis/implant failures, any complication, peri-implant marginal bone level changes, and patient satisfaction.Forty patients were randomly allocated to each group according to a parallel group design. No patient dropped-out and no implants failed. However four provisional prostheses and one definitive prosthesis had to be remade because of misfitting (five single crowns) in the repeated disconnection group; and one provisional prosthesis had to be remade because of frequent debondings in the immediate loading group (difference=10%; 95% CI: -1%, 21%; P=0.109). Five complications (all debondings of the provisional prostheses) were reported in two patients of the immediate loading group, in comparison to three biological complications in three patients of the repeated disconnection group (difference=2%; 95% CI: -8%, 13%; P=1). All patients were very satisfied or satisfied with the function and aesthetics of the prostheses, and would undergo the same procedure again. Mean peri-implant marginal bone loss 4 months after loading was -0.08 (0.16) mm for the definitive abutment group and -0.09 (0.20) mm for the repeated abutment changes group (difference=0.01; 95% CI: -0.07, 0.09; P=0.97). There were no statistically significant differences for any of the outcome measures between the two procedures up to 4 months after initial loading.Preliminary short-term data (4-month post-loading) showed that repeated abutment changes do not alter bone levels significantly. Immediate non-occlusal loading of dental implants are a viable alternative to conventional loading. Therefore clinicians can use the procedure they find more convenient for their specific patient.

Abstract

Aim Tissue engineering is a rapidly expanding field with regard to the use of biomaterials and stem cells in the orthopedic surgery. Many experimental studies have been done to understand the best characteristics of cells, materials and laboratory methods for safe clinical applications. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of 2 different human demineralized bone matrices (DBMs), the one enriched and the other not enriched with hyaluronic acid, to stimulate in vitro the proliferation and the osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) seeded onto an osteoconductive scaffold. Materials and Methods ADSCs were isolated, by enzymatic digestion, from abdominal adipose tissue of 5 patients undergoing cosmetic lipoaspiration surgery. ADSCs were then seeded onto a 3D scaffold in the presence of the two different osteoinductive matrices of human demineralized bone and evaluated for proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. The safety of the methods was verified using array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array-CGH). Results ADSCs were able to differentiate in osteogenic sense. Both DBMs showed the ability to induce osteogenic differentiation of the cells. Conclusion array-CGH showed no changes at genome level, thus confirming the safety of materials and methods.

Abstract

La Laguna di Grado (sistema lagunare di Grado e Marano - Friuli Venezia Giulia) è uno dei siti più rilevanti del Mar Adriatico sia dal punto di vista dell’estensione (circa 160 km2) sia dal punto di vista ambientale e naturalistico. Attraverso una classificazione di tipo unsuper-vised di 2 diverse immagini satellitari ASTER (in fase di alta e bassa marea) sono state indi-viduate le diverse morfologie e gli habitat presenti nel sistema lagunare, incluse le praterie di fanerogame marine. Per appurarne l’attendibilità, i risultati sono stati confrontati con dati di campo e cartografia tematica esistente. Un approccio di questo tipo può servire a monitorare le variazioni morfologiche e strutturali dell’ecosistema lagunare nel tempo e nello spazio.

Abstract

The charge ratio ${k \equiv \mu^+/\mu^-}$ for atmospheric muons has been measured using Large Volume Detector (LVD) in the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy (minimal depth is 3000 m w.e.). To reach this depth muons should have the energy at the sea level greater than 1.3 TeV. The muon charge ratio was defined using the number of the decays of stopping positive muons in the LVD iron structure and the decays of positive and negative muons in scintillator. We have obtained the value of the muon charge ratio ${k}$ ${= 1.26 \pm 0.04(stat) \pm 0.11(sys)}$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Version submitted for publication

Abstract

In the field of tissue engineering, adult stem cells are increasingly recognized as an important tool for in vitro reconstructed tissue-engineered grafts. In the world of cell therapies, mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow or adipose tissue are undoubtedly the most promising progenitors for tissue engineering applications. In this setting, adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) are generally similar to those derived from bone marrow and are most conveniently extracted from tissue removed in elective cosmetic liposuction procedures; they also show a great potential for endothelization. The aim of the present work was to investigate how the co-commitment into a vascular and bone phenotype of ASC could be a usefull tools for improving the in vitro and in vivo reconstruction of a vascularized bone graft. Human ASC obtained from abdominoplasty procedures were loaded in a hydroxyapatite clinical-grade scaffold, co-differentiated and tested for proliferation, cell distribution, and osteogenic and vasculogenic gene expression. The chromosomal stability of the cultures was investigated using the CGH array for 3D cultures. ASC adhesion, distribution, proliferation and gene expression not only demonstrated a full osteogenic and vasculogenic commitment in vitro and in vivo, but also showed that endothelization strongly improves their osteogenic commitment. This study explored the differences in technical performance and tactical knowledge of netball players at different levels of competition in the Western Cape. The players (N=30) were divided into three groups based on their level of competition (high level n=5, middle level n=12 and low level n=13). Each player's technical performance was assessed by four skill tests. A test protocol using slides and video clips of 17 different tactical problems was used to assess tactical knowledge. Abstract

Moniliophthora perniciosa is the causal agent of witches' broom in Theobroma cacao (cacao). Three biotypes of M. perniciosa are recognized, differing in host specificity, with two causing symptoms on cacao or Solanaceae species (C- and S-biotypes), and the third found growing endophytically on lianas (L-biotype). The objectives of this study were to clarify the genetic relationship between the three biotypes, and to identify those regions in the Brazilian Amazon with the greatest genetic diversity for the C-biotype. Phylogenetic reconstruction based on the rRNA ITS regions showed that the C- and S-biotypes formed a well-supported clade separated from the L-biotype. Analysis of 131 isolates genotyped at 11 microsatellite loci found that S- and especially L-biotypes showed a higher genetic diversity. A significant spatial genetic structure was detected for the C-biotype populations in Amazonia for up to 137 km, suggesting 'isolation by distance' mode of dispersal. However, in regions containing extensive cacao plantings, C-biotype populations were essentially 'clonal', as evidenced by high frequency of repeated multilocus genotypes. Among the Amazonian C-biotype populations, Acre and West Amazon displayed the largest genotypic diversity and might be part of the centre of diversity of the fungus. The pathogen dispersal may have followed the direction of river flow downstream from Acre, Rondônia and West Amazon eastward to the rest of the Amazon valley, where cacao is not endemic. The Bahia population exhibited the lowest genotypic diversity, but high allele richness, suggesting multiple invasions, with origin assigned to Rondônia and West Amazon, possibly through isolates from the Lower Amazon population.
