51. Characterization and origin of low-T willemite (ZnSiO) mineralization: the case of the Bou Arhous deposit (High Atlas, Morocco).

Abstract

Willemite (ZnSiO) usually reported in hypogene non-sulfide deposits is described as the main ore mineral in the carbonate-hosted Bou Arhous zinc deposit. This deposit is located in the High Atlas intracontinental range that formed during the Tertiary. Based on a set of microscopic observations, it was possible to establish that willemite replaces primary sphalerite. On the basis of cathodoluminescence imaging, three successive generations of willemite are distinguished, with evidence of dissolution-reprecipitation processes. Willemite is also variably enriched in Ge (up to 1000 ppm), while Ge contents lower than 100 ppm are reported in the primary sulfide minerals. Depending on the willemite generation, this substitution was positively or negatively correlated to the Zn-Pb substitution. According to the nature of zoning (sector versus oscillatory), the incorporation of Ge was either controlled by crystallographic factors or by the nature of the mineralizing fluids. Willemite is associated with other oxidation-related mineral species, like cerussite (PbCO) but is not in isotopic equilibrium and therefore not considered to be cogenetic. Oxygen isotope compositions support the formation of willemite at temperatures below 130 °C, from mixed meteoric and deeper, hydrothermal fluids. The formation of the High Atlas Belt during the Tertiary has contributed to the exhumation of the sulfide minerals and the development of vertical conduits for percolation of meteoric water and ascending hydrothermal fluids. In addition to a local contribution of silicate minerals of the host limestone, hydrothermal fluids probably transported Si and Ge that are incorporated in willemite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Constraining the Thermal history of tectonically active basins is of special importance for the petroleum industry. Indeed, the estimation of geothermal gradients and their evolution are basic parameters to understand the tectono-sedimentary evolution of fold-and-thrust belts and associated foreland basins. In this work, we focus on the turbiditic deposits of the Ainsa-Jaca basin (western part of the South Pyrenean Zone) which consist of an accreted foreland basin composed of Eocene syn-tectonic sediments. The aim is to quantify peak temperatures of the basin that underwent late diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism conditions during the Pyrenean activity. For this, turbiditic rocks and calcite veins (extensional and shear veins) were systematically sampled along a section over a thickness of 4 km through the Monte Perdido unit. In order to constrain the structures observed, sampling was accompanied with a detailed structural analysis. We have combined three thermometric indicators to evaluate peak temperature of rocks: Raman thermometry on carbonaceous material, fluid inclusion microthermometry on calcite/quartz shear and extensional veins and compositional chlorite thermometry on Fe-chlorite observed in shear veins. 68. Fe-Smectite-Glauconite Transition in Hydrothermal Green Clays from the Galapagos Spreading Center

Abstract

X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses (EDX) of individual clay particles from hydrothermal mounds in the Galapagos spreading center (GSC) (Deep Sea Drilling Project, hole 509B) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of the <2-µm size fraction of these sediments were carried out to document the mineralogy, geochemistry, and evolution of their clay horizons. The hydrothermal clay minerals of the GSC mounds were found to be intercalated with pelagic sediments and occurred as irregular interstratified illite/smectite according to X-ray powder diffraction analyses. On the basis of TEM, HRTEM, and EDX data, two types of clays appeared to coexist; these types differed in morphology, potassium content, and mode of stacking sequence. Lath-shaped particles having regular 10-Å, spacings were identified as glauconite, and filmy or veil-like particles, having curly edges and variable 10-13-Å spacings were identified as Fe-smectite (nontronite and Fe-montmorillonite). The absence of lattice fringes between Fe-smectite and glauconite crystallites was observed by HRTEM in clay aggregates. This structural discontinuity between Fe-smectite and glauconite layers suggests that a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism was responsible for the textural and chemical transition from the filmy Fe-smectite to the lath-like glauconite.

Abstract

Abstract: Strontium and O isotope compositions of green clay minerals from sediment cores of three boreholes drilled into (sites 424A and 509B) and close to a hydrothermal mound (site 424B) near the Galapagos Spreading Center (DSDP Legs 54 and 70) were determined. The green clays consist mostly of a transition from Fe-smectite (nontronite) to glauconite. 87Sr/86Sr ratios were measured on clay size-fractions after gentle acid leaching and on the recovered leachates from different samples. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the clay residues from both the 424A and B sites are well below the modern seawater value, which points consistently to precipitation from hydrothermal fluids that contained variable amounts of seawater, even away from mound. However, most of the clay residues from mound site 509B have 87Sr/86Sr ratios significantly above the seawater value, suggesting the occurrence of a detrital component together with the new authigenic particles. The clay minerals of the hydrothermal mound are mixed with detrital components, and that of the sample taken outside but near the mound as a reference for the surrounding oceanic environment, yields a hydrothermal signature. Crystallization temperatures of the clays range from 32 to 63°C assuming a δ18O value of +2.2‰ for the mineralizing fluids. Hydrothermal fluids generated in the underlying oceanic crust, mixed in varied proportions with ambient seawater and migrated into beds of the mound in a sequence of recurrent processes that ultimately resulted in the formation of the observed clay minerals. No significant temperature differences were detected for crystallization of the K-rich glauconite and K-depleted nontronite. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the Sr leached off the clay particles are near the value of modern seawater, inferring a progressive replacement of the hydrothermal fluids by seawater in the pore space of the mound sediments. 72. A Multidisciplinary Approach for the Assessment of Origin, Fate and Ecotoxicity of Metal(loid)s from Legacy Coal Mine Tailings.

Abstract

Over the course of history, the development of human societies implied the exploitation of mineral resources which generated huge amounts of mining wastes leading to substantial environmental contamination by various metal(loid)s. This is especially the case of coal mine tailings which, subjected to weathering reactions, produce acid mine drainage (AMD), a recurring ecological issue related to current and past mining activities. In this study, we aimed to determine the origin, the fate and the ecotoxicity of metal(loid)s leached from a historical coal tailing heap to the Beuveroux river (Franche-Comté, France) using a combination of mineralogical, chemical and biological approaches. In the constitutive materials of the tailings, we identified galena, tetrahedrite and bournonite as metal-rich minerals and their weathering has led to massive contamination of the water and suspended particles of the river bordering the heap. The ecotoxicity of the AMD has been assessed using Chironomus riparius larvae encaged in the field during a one-month biomonitoring campaign. The larvae showed lethal and sub-lethal (growth and emergence inhibition and delay) impairments at the AMD tributary and near downstream stations. Metal bioaccumulation and subcellular fractionation in the larvae tissues revealed a strong bioavailability of, notably, As, Pb and Tl explaining the observed biological responses. Thus, more than 70 years after the end of mining operations, the coal tailings remain a chronic source of contamination and environmental risks in AMD effluent receiving waters.
