A custom-designed optical configuration compatible with the use of micromachined multigroove internal reflection elements (μ-groove IREs) for attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy and imaging applications in microfluidic devices is described. The μ-groove IREs consist of several face-angled grooves etched into a single, monolithic silicon chip. The optical configuration permits individual grooves to be addressed by focusing synchrotron sourced IR light through a 150 µm pinhole aperture, restricting the beam spot size to a dimension smaller than that of the groove walls. The effective beam spot diameter at the ATR sampling plane is determined through deconvolution of the measured detector response and found to be 70 µm. The μ-groove IREs are highly compatible with standard photolithographic techniques as demonstrated by printing a 400 µm wide channel in an SU-8 film spin-coated on the IRE surface. Attenuated total reflection FT-IR mapping as a function of sample position across the channel illustrates the potential application of this approach for rapid prototyping of microfluidic devices. The adsorption behavior of the cationic surfactant N-decyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium triflate (DeTATf) on the Au(111) electrode surface was characterized using cyclic voltammetry, differential capacity, and chronocoulometry. The thermodynamics of the ideally polarized electrode have been employed to determine the Gibbs excess and the Gibbs energy of adsorption. The results show that the adsorption of DeTATf has a multistate character. At low bulk DeTATf concentrations, the adsorption state is consistent with the formation of an adsorbed film of nearly flat molecules. At higher concentrations this film may represent a three-dimensional aggregated state. At negative potentials and charge densities close to 0 microC cm-2, the data suggest the formation of a film of tilted molecules oriented with the hydrocarbon tail toward the metal surface and the polar head toward the solution. A surprising result of this study is that DeTATf displays adsorption characteristics of a zwitterionic rather than a cationic surfactant. This behavior indicates that the adsorbed species is an ion pair.

Using differential capacity and chronocoulometry, we have studied the electrosorption of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) on polycrystalline gold electrode surfaces. Our results indicate that the orientation of DMAP is highly dependent on the electrode potential and electrolyte pH. At pH values at or above the primary pKa, the adsorbed species is DMAP and orients vertically on the electrode surface via the lone pair of electrons on the pyridine ring's nitrogen atom. At very low pH values (<3) the adsorbed species is the protonated ion, DMAPH+, which can be desorbed from the electrode surface when the metal's surface charge density is made appreciably positive of the potential of zero charge. At intermediate electrolyte pH, either DMAP or DMAPH+ is adsorbed on the surface depending on the electrode's potential. At negative charge densities, DMAPH+ lies nearly flat on the gold electrode and the surface coverage is correspondingly low. When the electrode is positively charged, the adsorbate undergoes a phase transition to a vertical orientation and is simultaneously deprotonated to DMAP. Our results rationalize the stability of DMAP-ligated gold nanoparticles as a function of pH and demonstrate that the ligand's surface coverage is the principal factor in determining the stability of the colloidal system.
