- Abstract
We report the final measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters $\Delta m^2_{32}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ using all data from the MINOS and MINOS+ experiments. These data were collected using a total exposure of $23.76 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target producing $\nu_{mu}$ and $\overline{\nu_\mu}$ beams and 60.75 kt$\cdot$yr exposure to atmospheric neutrinos. The measurement of the disappearance of $\nu_{\mu}$ and the appearance of $\nu_e$ events between the Near and Far detectors yields $|\Delta m^2_{32}|=2.40^{+0.08}_{-0.09}~(2.45^{+0.07}_{-0.08}) \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.43^{+0.20}_{-0.04} ~(0.42^{+0.07}_{-0.03})$ at 68% C.L. for Normal (Inverted) Hierarchy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

- Abstract
© 2020, The Author(s). Background: Cross-education refers to increased motor output (i.e., force generation, skill) of the opposite, untrained limb following a period of unilateral exercise training. Despite extensive research, several aspects of the transfer phenomenon remain controversial. Methods: A modified two-round Delphi online survey was conducted among international experts to reach consensus on terminology, methodology, mechanisms of action, and translational potential of cross-education, and to provide a framework for future research. Results: Through purposive sampling of the literature, we identified 56 noted experts in the field, of whom 32 completed the survey, and reached consensus (75% threshold) on 17 out of 27 items. Conclusion: Our consensus-based recommendations for future studies are that (1) the term ‘cross-education’ should be adopted to refer to the transfer phenomenon, also specifying if transfer of strength or skill is meant; (2) functional magnetic resonance imaging, short-interval intracortical inhibition and interhemispheric inhibition appear to be promising tools to study the mechanisms of transfer; (3) strategies which maximize cross-education, such as high-intensity training, eccentric contractions, and mirror illusion, seem worth being included in the intervention plan; (4) study protocols should be designed to include at least 13–18 sessions or 4–6 weeks to produce functionally meaningful transfer of strength, and (5) cross-education could be considered as an adjuvant treatment particularly for unilateral orthopedic conditions and sports injuries. Additionally, a clear gap in views emerged between the research field and the purely clinical field. The present consensus statement clarifies relevant aspects of cross-education including neurophysiological, neuroanatomical, and methodological characteristics of the transfer phenomenon, and provides guidance on how to improve the quality and usability of future cross-education studies.

- Abstract
We present updated results from the NOvA experiment for νμ→νμ and νμ→νe oscillations from an exposure of 8.85×1020 protons on target, which represents an increase of 46% compared to our previous publication. The results utilize significant improvements in both the simulations and analysis of the data. A joint fit to the data for νμ disappearance and νe appearance gives the best-fit point as normal mass hierarchy, Δm322=2.44×10−3 eV2/c4, sin2θ23=0.56, and δCP=1.21π. The 68.3% confidence intervals in the normal mass hierarchy are Δm322∈[2.37,2.52]×10−3 eV2/c4, sin2θ23∈[0.43,0.51]∪[0.52,0.60], and δCP∈[0,0.12π]∪[0.91π,2π]. The inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored at the 95% confidence level for all choices of the other oscillation parameters.

The proposed Mitchell Institute Neutrino Experiment at Reactor (MINER) experiment at the Nuclear Science Center at Texas A&M University will search for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering within close proximity (about 2 meters) of a 1 MW TRIGA nuclear reactor core using low threshold, cryogenic germanium and silicon detectors. Given the Standard Model cross section of the scattering process and the proposed experimental proximity to the reactor, as many as 5 to 20 events/kg/day are expected. We discuss the status of preliminary measurements to characterize the main backgrounds for the proposed experiment. Both in situ measurements at the experimental site and simulations using the MCNP and GEANT4 codes are described. A strategy for monitoring backgrounds during data taking is briefly discussed., 12 pages, 14 figures

High Energy Physics::Phenomenology ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
We report results of a search for oscillations involving a light sterile neutrino over distances of 1.04 and 735 km in a nu(mu)-dominated beam with a peak energy of 3 GeV. The data, from an exposure of 10.56 x 10(20) protons on target, are analyzed using a phenomenological model with one sterile neutrino. We constrain the mixing parameters theta(24) and Delta m(41)(2) and set limits on parameters of the four-dimensional Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix, vertical bar U-mu 4 vertical bar(2) and vertical bar U-tau 4 vertical bar(2), under the assumption that mixing between nu(e) and nu(s) is negligible (vertical bar U-e4 vertical bar(2) = 0). No evidence for nu(mu) -> nu(s) transitions is found and we set a world-leading limit on theta(24) for values of Delta m(41)(2) less than or similar to 1 eV(2).

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti) neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin(2) 2 theta(mu e) are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Delta m(41)(2). The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Delta m(41)(2) < 0.8 eV(2) at 95% CLs.

The charge ratio, R-mu = N mu+/N mu-, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an underground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be R mu = 1.104 +/- 0.006(stat)(-0.010)(+0.009) (syst). This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic-ray interactions at TeV energies.

The metanephric kidney is formed through the reciprocal induction of the ureteric bud and the metanephric mesenchyme. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is expressed during development in the uroepithelium in the trunk of the ureteric bud, the collecting duct, and the ureter. Its receptor and downstream target gene, Patched 1, is expressed in the mesenchymal cells including those that surround the collecting duct system and the ureter. To understand the role of Shh signaling in kidney development, we generated conditional Shh mutants in which Shh activity is specifically removed from the collecting duct and ureter. Most such mice die at 1 dpp. The mutant kidneys are smaller than wild type, and the ureters are dilated and tortuous. Close examination of the ureters showed that more distal mesenchymal cells (close to the bladder) that normally surround the transitional epithelium which expresses Shh are less well aggregated. In addition, there is a reduction in differentiated smooth muscle which arises from these cells, suggesting that Shh may be involved in the formation of smooth muscle from mesenchymal cells which lie adjacent to the ureter. We will report our analysis of mutant kidneys during embryonic development and of kidneys from Shh transgenic mice embryos in which Shh is expressed throughout the ureteric bud, the renal collecting duct system, and the ureter.

Cell to cell signaling is required for a number of developmental processes. Proper development of the metanephric kidney requires reciprocal signals from the ureteric bud epithelium and nephrogenic mesenchyme. Derivatives of the ureteric bud induce the adjacent metanephric mesenchyme to undergo epithelialization. Signals from the mesenchyme are required for the propel growth and branching of the ureter. If either tissue is disturbed, normal nephrogenesis does not occur. Members of the FGF, BMP, Hedgehog, and Wnt families have been shown to be essential for cell signaling in several embryonic tissues. Genetic manipulations suggest that many of these factors may interact to regulate developmental patterning. Several members of the Wnt family of secreted glycoproteins are expressed in distinct domains within the developing kidney including Wnt-4, Wnt-7b, and Wnt-11. Wnt-4 is expressed within the metanephric mesenchyme while Wnts-7b and -11 are expressed within the developing ureteric epithelium. With the exception of Wnt-4, which is required for the epithelialization of the metanephric mesenchyme, we know nothing of the roles of these factors in normal kidney development. In the case of Wnt-7b, mutagenesis causes early embryonic lethality due to a failure of the chorion and allantois to fuse. To circumvent this problem, we are utilizing a combination of embryological and molecular techniques including tetraploid aggregation, conditional mutagenesis, and tissue-specific misexpression to study the role of this gene in kidney development. These techniques are unveiling hitherto unappreciated roles for this factor in the development of the urogenital system.

- Abstract
Forward single pi(0) production by coherent neutral-current interactions, vA -> vA pi(0), is investigated using a 2.8 x 10(20) protons-on-target exposure of the MINOS Near Detector. For single-shower topologies, the event distribution in production angle exhibits a clear excess above the estimated background at very forward angles for visible energy in the range 1-8 GeV. Cross sections are obtained for the detector medium comprised of 80% iron and 20% carbon nuclei with (A) = 48, the highest-< A > target used to date in the study of this coherent reaction. The total cross section for coherent neutral-current single pi(0) production initiated by the v(mu) flux of the NuMI low-energy beam with mean (mode) E-v of 4.9 GeV (3.0 GeV), is 77.6 +/- 5.0 (stat)(-) (+15.0)(16.8) (syst) x 10(-40) cm(2) pernucleus. The results are in good agreement with predictions of the Berger-Sehgal model.

The assessment of voluntary activation of human muscles usually depends on measurement of the size of the twitch produced by an interpolated nerve or cortical stimulus. In many forms of fatiguing exercise the superimposed twitch increases and thus voluntary activation appears to decline. This is termed ‘central’ fatigue. Recent studies on isolated mouse muscle suggest that a peripheral mechanism related to intracellular calcium sensitivity increases interpolated twitches. To test whether this problem developed with human voluntary contractions we delivered maximal tetanic stimulation to the ulnar nerve (≥60 s at physiological motoneuronal frequencies, 30 and 15 Hz). During the tetani (at 30 Hz) in which the force declined by 42%, the absolute size of the twitches evoked by interpolated stimuli (delivered regularly or only in the last second of the tetanus) diminished progressively to less than 1%. With stimulation at 30 Hz, there was also a marked reduction in size and area of the interpolated compound muscle action potential (M wave). With a 15 Hz tetanus, a progressive decline in the interpolated twitch force also occurred (to ∼10%) but did so before the area of the interpolated M wave diminished. These results indicate that the increase in interpolated twitch size predicted from the mouse studies does not occur. Diminution in superimposed twitches occurred whether or not the M wave indicated marked impairment at sarcolemmal/t-tubular levels. Consequently, the increase in superimposed twitch, which is used to denote central fatigue in human fatiguing exercise, is likely to reflect low volitional drive to high-threshold motor units, which stop firing or are discharging at low frequencies.
