Cryptaphelenchus species are wood- or bark-inhabiting nematodes, generally mycetophagous and reported to have endophoretic associations with insects. In the present study, we describe two new and one known Cryptaphelenchus species detected in imported and domestic wood samples. Cryptaphelenchus americanum n. sp. and C. minutus were detected in the log samples of Pinus taeda imported from the USA, whereas C. orientalis n. sp. was isolated from the bark of dying Pinus sylvestris trees in Inner Mongolia, China. Both new species displayed characteristic features, including a relatively short body length, four lateral lines, a short post-vulval uterine sac in females, and a distinct cloacal apophysis in male tails. Newly recovered and known species were characterised molecularly, and phylogenetic trees were constructed to study their relationship with related Cryptaphelenchus species. Notably, the genetic divergence observed among Cryptaphelenchus species was found to be more significant compared to morphometrical differences, highlighting the importance of molecular data in taxonomy. The identification of new and known species expands our understanding of the genus and suggests that Cryptaphelenchus species may be under studied, underscoring the necessity for continued exploration. Background and Purpose: Recent studies have suggested an association between dysfunction of the choroid plexus and the glymphatic system. However, information is inconclusive. Following a population-based study design, we aimed to assess the association between choroid plexus calcifications (CPCs)—as a surrogate of choroid plexus dysfunction—and severity and progression of putative markers of glymphatic dysfunction, including white matter hyperintensities (WMH) of presumed vascular origin and abnormally enlarged basal ganglia perivascular spaces (BG-PVS). Methods: This study recruited community-dwellers aged ≥40 years living in neighboring Ecuadorian villages. Participants who had baseline head CTs and brain MRIs were included in cross-sectional analyses and those who additional had follow-up MRIs (after a mean of 6.4 ± 1.5 years) were included in longitudinal analyses. Logistic and Poisson regression models, adjusted for demographics and cardiovascular risk factors, were fitted to assess associations between CPCs and WMH and enlarged BG-PVS severity and progression. Results: A total of 590 individuals were included in the cross-sectional component of the study, and 215 in the longitudinal component. At baseline, 25% of participants had moderate-to-severe WMH and 27% had abnormally enlarged BG-PVS. At follow-up, 36% and 20% of participants had WMH and enlarged BG-PVS progression, respectively. Logistic regression models showed no significant differences between CPCs volumes stratified in quartiles and severity of WMH and enlarged BG-PVS. Poisson regression models showed no association between the exposure and WMH and enlarged BG-PVS progression. Baseline age remained significant in these models. Conclusions: Choroid plexus calcifications are not associated with putative markers of glymphatic system dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the classical view, NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are stably expressed at the postsynaptic membrane, where they act via Ca2+ to signal coincidence detection in Hebbian plasticity. More recently, it has been established that NMDAR-mediated transmission can be dynamically regulated by neural activity. In addition, NMDARs have been found presynaptically, where they cannot act as conventional coincidence detectors. Unexpectedly, NMDARs have also been shown to signal metabotropically, without the need for Ca2+ This review highlights novel findings concerning these unconventional modes of NMDAR action.

A population of a species of dagger nematode (Xiphinema) belonging to the non-americanum group was recovered from the fields of kola nut (Cola sp.) in southern Nigeria. The morphological and morphometric data obtained from this population were consistent with the characteristics of the species Xiphinema ifacolum. In addition, molecular identification based on D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA and partial mitochondrial COI gene regions confirmed its identity. According to our knowledge, this is the first report of the species from Nigeria, and the second report from Africa, after the original description from Foulaya, Guinea.

Summary: Cyst-forming nematodes of the genus Heterodera are highly derived and economically important plant parasites. The Schachtii group of this genus is one of the largest ones with a total of 18 species parasitising dicotyledons. In this study, we provided comprehensive phylogenetic analyses of several hundred COI and ITS rRNA gene sequences of selected species from the Schachtii group, including H. betae , H. cajani , H. ciceri , H. galeopsidis , H. glycines , H. medicaginis , H. mediterranea , H. schachtii , H. sonchophila and H. trifolii , using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and statistical parsimony. One hundred and twenty four new COI , 57 ITS rRNA and eight hsp90 gene sequences from 81 nematode populations collected in 19 countries were obtained in this study. Our study showed that the ITS rRNA gene has limited discrimination power compared to the COI gene. However, our analysis also revealed that partial COI gene sequences were identical for H. trifolii , H. betae and H. galeopsidis. Based on the results of phylogeographical analysis and age estimation of clades with a molecular clock approach, it was hypothesised that the majority of the Schachtii group species originated and diversified in the Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot during the Pleistocene and then dispersed from this region across the world. The Sino-Japanese Floristic Region is likely one of the centres of diversification for the soybean cyst nematode, which showed distinct population structure. The possible role of hybridisation and polyploidisation in the evolution of species of the Schachtii group is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
