Abstract

In this brief the authors establish a new frequency-sweeping framework to solve the complete stability problem for time-delay systems with commensurate delays. The text describes an analytic curve perspective which allows a deeper understanding of spectral properties focusing on the asymptotic behavior of the characteristic roots located on the imaginary axis as well as on properties invariant with respect to the delay parameters. This asymptotic behavior is shown to be related by another novel concept, the dual Puiseux series which helps make frequency-sweeping curves useful in the study of general time-delay systems. The comparison of Puiseux and dual Puiseux series leads to three important results: an explicit function of the number of unstable roots simplifying analysis and design of time-delay systems so that to some degree they may be dealt with as finite-dimensional systems; categorization of all time-delay systems into three types according to their ultimate stability properties; and a simple frequency-sweeping criterion allowing asymptotic behavior analysis of critical imaginary roots for all positive critical delays by observation. Academic researchers and graduate students interested in time-delay systems and practitioners working in a variety of fields – engineering, economics and the life sciences involving transfer of materials, energy or information which are inherently non-instantaneous, will find the results presented here useful in tackling some of the complicated problems posed by delays.

Abstract

There are many situations where distributed control applications have to exchange information through limited bandwidth communication channels. Examples may be found in areas ranging from the underwater robotics to the control of satellites clusters. Bandwidth limitations affect the behavior of these systems. For that reason, there is a strong need for developing methods that maximize the relevancy of the exchanged control information. In general, increasing control inputs update frequency improves the disturbance rejection abilities whereas increasing their quantization precision improves the steady state performance (set point tracking precision for example). However, when the bandwidth is limited, increasing the update frequency necessitates the reduction of the quantization precision and vice versa. Motivated by these observations, and focusing on the uplink bandwidth limitations, an approach for the dynamical on-line state-feedback assignment of control inputs quantization precision and update rate is proposed. This approach, which is based on the model predictive control (MPC) technique, enables to choose the update rate and the quantization levels of control signals from a predefined set, in order to optimize the control performance. A heuristic approach allowing an efficient choice of the elements of this set is proposed. Practical stability properties of the approach are then studied. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated on a simulation example.

International audience; Le déroulement des études à l?ESIEE, école d?ingénieurs en 5 ans, est articulé selon une progression de projets et de stages devant permettre à l?élève d?acquérir des compétences techniques, humaines et de gestion de projet. Nous décrivons ici l?étude de synthèse de quatrième année, menée selon un schéma légèrement différent permettant aux élèves d?aborder globalement un système technique complexe. Il nous a paru important d'inclure cette étude de synthèse, permettant aux élèves de valider leurs acquis dans le cadre d'une démarche projet et d'en dégager la cohérence, en introduction de leurs stages professionnels en entreprise.

97. Maximum friction estimation and longitudinal control for a full in-wheel electric motor vehicle.

Abstract

The present paper describes a longitudinal control strategy in time-varying road surface adhesion conditions, for a vehicle equipped with 4 in-wheel electric motors. The controller task is to ensure two main functions : braking (achieving an ABS-like function, i.e., no wheel skid), and traction control (TCS-like function, i.e., low wheel slip) using the electric motor torques as the unique actuators signal sources. The torque of electric motors is available almost instantaneously. In addition, information about its values can be measured, starting from the current that passes through the motor, which means that advanced control techniques can be applied directly on the transmitted torque. In order to generate the appropriate anti-skid or anti-slip torque for each wheel, firstly, an estimation of the instantaneous friction between the wheel and the road has to be made. Next, the maximum friction between the wheel and the road is computed with the help of an algorithm based on Dugoff tire model, without prior knowledge of the road conditions. Ultimately, the control strategy will compute a maximum torque that is allowed to be transmitted at each wheel in order to achieve TCS and ABS functions, along with a given reference speed to track. Abstract

The rapid development of Mobile Internet and Smart Devices and advent of a new generation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) increase information about present driving conditions and make its prediction possible. Real time traffic information systems (TIS) like SYTADIN help in route to destination planning and traffic state prediction. Energy-optimal routing for electric vehicles creates novel algorithmic challenges where the computation complexity and the quality of information on traffic state are the main issues. This complexity is induced by the possible negative values of edge energy as well as the variability of route and vehicle variables which render the standard algorithms unsuitable. In this paper we present an Energy Optimal Real Time Navigation System (EORTNS), implemented on Samsung Galaxy Tab, capable of calculating the route to destination based on information flow obtained from SYTADIN. As an application example we propose a real time energy management for a Hybrid Electrical Vehicle (HEV) composed of batteries and Super-Capacitors (SC). The EORTNS is not only capable of energy optimal route to destination calculation with respect to traffic state but also operates the On-Board power splitting between batteries and Super-Capacitors.
