Abstract

The 52 papers presented reflect the diverse interests of the members of the National Association for Science, Technology and Society (NASTS). The first two papers deal with theoretical issues related to technological literacy (TL). Two papers discuss technology education at the elementary school level. Twelve papers cover various aspects of science-technology-society (STS) education at the middle and high school level, including project descriptions and ideas for addressing specific issues. Ten papers are on topics related to TL and STS at the college and university level. Some of these deal with TL as it relates to teacher education; others discuss the integration of technological issues into general education. The seven papers on general issues across educational levels take a broader perspective and examine the past and future of STS and TL programs. Technological literacy, writing, and the liberal arts is a clear area of interest, with seven papers focusing on this topic. Five papers deal with TL and minorities, four with TL and information services. The proceedings conclude with two papers on ethics, values, and technological literacy and one on the challenges facing STS education. (JB)

Abstract

This handbook is designed to provide basic background information on the social studies curriculum, as well as current information on publications, standards, and special materials for K-12 social studies. The introduction provides an overview of the ideologies and philosophies that have affected U.S. curriculum through the years. The volume is divided into three parts including curriculum development in the subject, curriculum guides and supplementary materials, and textbooks, classroom materials, and other resources. Chapter 1 provides an overview of trends and issues in social studies curriculum. Chapter 2 is a step-by-step description of curriculum process and design. Chapter 3 lists funding programs that are studying or developing curriculum. Along with addresses and phone numbers, the names of contact persons are provided wherever possible. Chapter 4 provides an overview and outline of important topics in K-12 social studies. Chapter 5 describes the curriculum materials and includes the similarities among states and within regions, plus differences and gaps in coverage. Chapter 6 supplements the previous chapter by listing addresses of state departments of education and publication titles. Chapter 7 is an annotated list of recommended curriculum guides for social studies. Chapter 8 reprints sections of two social studies guides to use as examples. Chapter 9 is a source list for special projects. Chapter 10 gives information on children's trade books. Chapter 11 is an annotated list of curriculum material producers and textbook publishers. This document contains the text of 50 papers presented at a national conference that focused on the relationships among science, technology, and society (STS). Most of the papers presented featured one of five major thematic areas around which the National Association for Science, Technology and Society is organized: education and information; environment; health and biomedicine; moral, ethical, and philosophical perspectives; and technology, industry, and work. Several papers focused on the special theme of the conference: "Broadening Participation in Science, Technology and Medicine" (the STS community needs to encourage further participation by and seek out perspectives on women, minorities, and the international community in STS studies). Abstract

High-sugar consumption is related to dyslipidemia. How acute exercise affects postprandial lipid and lipoprotein particle responses to a high-sugar meal (HSM) in postmenopausal women is unclear. We examined the effects of a late afternoon/early evening bout of aerobic exercise on postprandial lipid and lipoprotein particle responses to a HSM breakfast the following day in 22 postmenopausal women. Subjects underwent exercise (EX) and no exercise (NE) conditions in the evening 13–16 h before the HSM breakfast consumption, in a random order. During the EX condition, subjects performed supervised aerobic exercise for 60 min at 75% of age-predicted maximum heart rate. The HSM (75.6% carbohydrate and 33% energy needs) was consumed after a 12-h fast. Serum lipids and lipoproteins were assessed at baseline and postprandially (60, 120, 180 min). Repeated measures analysis showed significantly lower area under the curve (geometric means [95% CI]) for triglycerides (TG) (2.96[2.43, 3.61] vs. 3.24[2.70, 3.88] mmol/L*hr; p = 0.049) and very low density lipoprotein particles (VLDLP) (114.6[88.2, 148.9] vs. 134.3[108.1, 166.9] nmol/L*hr; p = 0.02) during the EX versus NE condition. There were no condition effects for other variables. In conclusion, the EX versus NE condition lowered postprandial AUC for TG and VLDLP following HSM consumption in postmenopausal women.
