Coix lacryma-jobi L. is one of the most important economical and medicine corn. In this study, a high genetic linkage map has been constructed for Coix lacryma-jobi L. from a cross F2 community of “Qianyi NO.2” × “Wenyi NO.2” and their parents through high-throughput sequencing and specfic-locus amplified fragment (SLAF) library construction. After pre-processing, 325.49 Gb of raw data containing 1,628 M reads were obtained. A total of 22,944 high-quality SLAFs were detected, among which 3,952 SLAFs and 3,646 of the polymorphic markers could meet the requirements for construction of a genetic linkage map. The integrated map contains 3,605 high quality SLAFs, which are grouped to 10 genetic linkage groups. The total length of the linkage map is 1,620.39 cM with an average distance of 0.45 cM and 360.5 markers in average of per linkage group. This work will provide an important molecular biology basis for investigating their characteristics, gene cloning, molecular marker-assisted breeding, functional genomics and so on for Job’s tears.

This paper presents the development of a nonlinear vibro-acoustic modulation technique based on non-contact piezoelectric sensors to detect the crack progression of concrete subjected to both mechanical and thermal load. Two types of crack are investigated in the work including the isolated single crack induced by the three point bending test and distributed mapping cracks caused by heating treatment. Experimental results show that the damage index defined in the air-coupled wave modulation method – ultrasonic nonlinear parameter presents a positive correlation with the growth of single crack in bending test and the accumulation of mapping crack in thermal test. The sensitivity of developed method is validated through a comparison between the ultrasonic nonlinear parameter and two traditional linear parameters namely the phase velocity of Rayleigh wave and resonance frequency of vibrations. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) technique and three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction method are used to visualize microstructure of thermal damage. The CT images show that proposed nonlinear parameter is reliable and well correlated with the microstructural defects of concrete specimen. The repeatability of the air-coupled method is better than the contact method because the coefficient of variation of non-contact measurements is averagely about 43.2% of the contact measurements. Due to the advantage of removable characteristic of non-contact ultrasonic measurements, the developed air-coupled nonlinear wave modulation method could be promising for fast damage assessment of concrete structures in engineering practice.

Background: Previous studies have shown that TIFA (TNF receptor associated factor (TRAF)-interacting protein with a Forkhead-associated (FHA) domain) plays different roles in various tumor types. However, the function of TIFA in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The goal of this study is to uncover the biological function and molecular mechanism of TIFA in CRC.Methods: Tissue microarrays were used to evaluate TIFA expression. Cancer cell proferation assays were performed in TIFA knockdown and overexpressing cells in vitro and in a xenograft model in vivo. Human phosphokinase array, immunoprecipitation assays were performed to explore the underlying mechanism.Results: We disclosed that the expression of TIFA was marked increased in CRC versus normal tissue, and positively correlated with CRC TNM stages. In agreement, we found that the CRC cell lines show increased TIFA expression levels versus normal control. The knockdown of TIFA inhibited cell proliferation but have no effects on cell apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the ectopic expression of TIFA enhanced cell proliferation ability in vitro and in vivo. In contrast, the expression of mutant TIFA (T9A, oligomerization site mutation; D6, TRAF6 binding site deletion) alternatively abolished TIFA mediated cell proliferation enhancement. Exploration of the underlying mechanism demonstrated that the protein synthesis associated kinase RSK and PRAS40 activation were all responsible for TIFA mediated CRC progression. Conclusions: The above results described a model of TIFA in mediating CRC progression. This may provide a promising target for CRC therapy.

Plant diseases reduce crop yield and quality, hampering the development of agriculture. Fungicides, which restrict chemical synthesis in fungi, are the strongest controls for plant diseases. However, the harmful effects on the environment due to continued and uncontrolled utilization of fungicides have become a major challenge in recent years. Plant-sourced fungicides are a class of plant antibacterial substances or compounds that induce plant defenses. They can kill or inhibit the growth of target pathogens efficiently with no or low toxicity, they degrade readily, and do not prompt development of resistance, which has led to their widespread use. In this study, the growth inhibition effect of 24 plant-sourced ethanol extracts on rice sprigs was studied. Ethanol extract of gallnuts and cloves inhibited the growth of bacteria by up to 100%. Indoor toxicity measurement results showed that the gallnut and glove constituents inhibition reached 39.23 μg/mL and 18.82 μg/mL, respectively. Extract treated rice sprigs were dry and wrinkled. Gallnut caused intracellular swelling and breakage of mitochondria, disintegration of nuclei, aggregation of protoplasts, and complete degradation of organelles in hyphae and aggregation of cellular contents. Protection of Rhizoctonia solani viability reached 46.8% for gallnut and 37.88% for clove in water emulsions of 1000 μg/mL gallnut and clove in the presence of 0.1% Tween 80. The protection by gallnut was significantly stronger than that of clove. The data could inform the choice of plant-sourced fungicides for the comprehensive treatment of rice sprig disease. The studied extract effectively protected rice sprigs and could be a suitable alternative to commercially available chemical fungicides. Further optimized field trials are needed to effectively sterilize rice paddies.

In this paper, a novel nonsingular finite-time backstepping controller is constructed for trajectory tracking of marine vessel subject to unknown external disturbances. Firstly, in the presence of disturbances, a disturbance observer (DO) is proposed to estimate and compensate the disturbances exactly in finite time. Secondly, a finite-time tracking controller is designed in the classical backstepping procedure, however, the inevitable singularity appears in calculating the derivative of virtual control. Furthermore, for overcoming this singularity, a nonsingular finite-time backstepping controller is designed by adopting a finite-time command filter to estimate the derivative, instead of calculating it directly. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the closed-loop system is finite-time stable. Finally, simulation results and comparisons illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper details the design and implementation of the hardware circuit of the intelligent cart motion control system, and uses a variety of virtual reality and visual sensing technologies to design an environmental detection and search and rescue robot under complex conditions. Infrared technology is used to achieve the function of automatic obstacle avoidance of the trolley, ultrasonic technology is used to achieve the function of distance measurement, Bluetooth is used to achieve the function of wireless remote control of the trolley, GPS technology is used to display the geographical position of the trolley, a homemade bionic robotic arm is installed, and the robotic arm servo can be controlled by PC upper computer, Bluetooth and homemade body remote sensing controller to work to achieve the removal of obstacles and unknown environment and dangerous areas The information is collected through a PC, Bluetooth and a home-made body telemetry controller.

As the main load-bearing structure of heavy machine tools, cranes, and other high-end equipment, the large-scale box structures usually bear moving loads, and the results of direct topology optimization usually have some problems: the load transfer skeleton is difficult to identify and all working conditions are difficult to consider comprehensively. In this paper, a layout design method of stiffened plates for the large-scale box structures under moving loads based on multiworking-condition topology optimization is proposed. Based on the equivalent principle of force, the box structures are simplified into the main bending functional section, main torsional functional section, and auxiliary functional section by the magnitude of loads and moments, which can reduce the structural dimension and complexity in topology optimization. Then, the moving loads are simplified to some multiple position loads, and the comprehensive evaluation function is constructed by the compromise programming method. The mathematical model of multiworking-condition topology optimization is established to optimize the functional sections. Taking a crossbeam of superheavy turning and milling machining center as an example, optimization results show that the stiffness and strength of the crossbeam are increased by 17.39% and 19.9%, respectively, while the weight is reduced by 12.57%. It shows that the method proposed in this paper has better practicability and effectiveness for large-scale box structures.

With the growth of network equipment, the security of network access environment becomes particularly important. Many network security technologies, such as vulnerability mining, fuzzy testing and intrusion detection, have attracted more and more attention. However, the effectiveness of these security technologies will be greatly reduced in the face of unknown protocols. By automatically extracting the format information of unknown protocols through the protocol reverse technology, the processing capability of the above security technologies in the face of unknown protocols can be enhanced. In this paper, by analyzing the changing characteristics of protocol fields, a field sequence coding method is proposed, which is suitable for reflecting the field sequence characteristics of different protocols and can improve the generalization ability of the model. Using the above field sequence coding method, a field classification model for unknown protocols is implemented based on the LSTM-FCN network, which is widely used in time series classification tasks. Finally, a binary protocol reverse method based on deep learning is proposed. The method is based on the field classification model and realizes the division and type identification of unknown protocol fields according to the classification results. In the experiment, the field classification model has high accuracy and recall in different protocols, which shows that the model has the ability to identify the field type according to the changing characteristics of the field. The proposed protocol reverse method also accurately and quickly identifies the field and its type, proving the reverse ability of the method to unknown binary protocols.

A new method is proposed to solve edge cracking and corrosion in rolling process of the magnesium alloy plate. Usually in the process, the edge cracking is caused by the great temperature difference between the edge and the center of the alloy plate and the corrosion is by water in air. The method uses hot air wrapped around the plate to perfectly prevent edge cracking and corrosion. The method also includes cathodic protection for the magnesium alloy based on electrochemistry. The suppression of cathodic protection on the chemical activity of the magnesium alloy was studied. The experiment shows that the new method of edge heating with hot air wrapping is effective to prevent edge cracking and corrosion. Also, the cathodic protection can effectively suppress the chemical activity of the magnesium alloy and improve the surface quality in the rolling process of the magnesium plate, which provides a new concept in rolling process of the magnesium alloy.

A bacterial strain (BGf-2) with anti-Beauveria bassiana activity was obtained from the feces of Blattella germanica (L.) and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on biochemical tests and 16S rRNA sequence analysis. An antifungal protein (A0A0H2ZK06) was purified with Sephadex G-100 column and DEAE-sepharose Fast Flowanion exchange from sterile BGf-2 fermentation liquid. Based on MALDI-TOF MS analysis and protein model building, A0A0H2ZK06 showed homology with Pyrrolidone carboxyl peptidases (pcps). Fermentation liquid and antifungal proteins not only reduced the B. bassiana conidial germination rate but also inhibited hyphal growth. A per os test showed that the mortality of cockroaches decreased after treatment with BGf-2 suspension compared with control. We hypothesized that gut microbes with antifungal activity might play an important role in protect cockroaches from pathogenic fungi.

We described herein a unique dual emission switching process from o-carborane–tetraphenylethene (TPE) dyads induced by twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) in the crystalline state. Two novel o-carborane–tetraphenylethylene dyads, composed of a TPE core bearing o-carborane units, were designed, synthesized and characterized. Crystalline o-1 and o-2 were obtained with mono-substituted and bi-substituted o-carborane units, respectively. Both dyads presented locally excited (LE) emission and TICT induced emission in solutions. Crystalline o-1 demonstrated aggregation-induced emission (AIE), crystallization-induced emission (CIE), thermochromism, vapochromism, and mechanical luminescence (MCL) properties via TICT, while crystalline o-2 showed only the AIE and CIE properties orginating from the inherent ICT states. From the mechanistic investigations and theoretical calculations, it was demonstrated that the emission was reversible and switchable between green and orange colors for o-1, which was assigned to the facile TICT modulation in the solid state. The results manifest that the unique three-dimensional o-carborane cluster's structure plays an important role in precisely controlling the molecular packing patterns and conformations to achieve TICT emission.

To design and synthesize materials for alkaline hydrogen evolution is favorable for industrial hydrogen cycle operation. In this study, we present a facile approach to synthesize free-standing ruthenium-beryllium (RuBe) nanosheets, which possess amorphous phase state and associated with holey structures due to the molten method. The two-dimensional RuBe nanosheets exhibit improved activity than pure Ru counterpart and comparable properties to commercial Pt toward hydrogen evolution reaction in both of alkaline and neutral electrolytes. Based on the experiments and density functional theory calculations, it is suggested that the adsorption and dissociation of water molecules on Ru-based catalyst are much enhanced with the assistance of Be modulation, which are essential for the improved hydrogen production capability under alkaline condition. This work broadens the Ru-based catalyst family and may provide new insights for electrocatalyst development.

Ultrasonic-assisted grinding processing can effectively reduce the surface roughness and enhance the processing efficiency in the processing of hard and brittle materials. However, the most common ultrasonic assisted grinding is a type of contact ultrasonic grinding where the grinding tool directly contacts the workpiece, which means that it is necessary to accurately control the pre-pressure of the grinding tool on the workpiece. The control of pre-pressure will inevitably increase the complexity of the grinding device, and it is easy to wear the workpiece because of improper pre-pressure control. In this paper, a non-contact ultrasonic grinding method is proposed and the machining mechanism of non-contact ultrasonic grinding is revealed. The resonant frequency of the ultrasonic vibration system and vibration amplitude of the grinding tool working face were simulated and experimentally tested, respectively. Then, the experiment of non-contact ultrasonic grinding of a sapphire wafer was carried out. The result showed that non-contact ultrasonic grinding of the sapphire wafer could reduce the surface roughness by 48.6%. Compared with traditional contact grinding of sapphire wafer under certain pre-pressure conditions, the experimental results show that non-contact ultrasonic grinding has better effects in reducing surface roughness, improving processing efficiency, and improving the quality uniformity of the workpiece machining surface.

Reduced graphene oxide wrapped hollow molybdenum trioxide nanorods (MoO 3 @rGO) have been fabricated by a facile process. The MoO 3 @rGO shows improved lithium storage performance. It could deliver a high reversible capacity (842 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), excellent cycling stability (778 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g after 200 cycles) and excellent rate capability (455 mAh/g at 2 A/g). The excellent electrochemical performance could be attributed as the special core (MoO 3 )/sheath (rGO) structure, which could accommodate the volume change of MoO 3 during lithiation/delithiation process. In addition, the rGO coating layer could improve the electronic conductivity of MoO 3 .

Aiming at the problem of heat loss from the inner pot of the rice cooker, based on theoretical analysis and CFD simulation technology, this paper establishes a three-dimensional model of the inner pot of the rice cooker, uses the SCDM model analysis in Fluent, and performs grid division and fluid calculations. Adding a reflection layer and a vacuum insulation layer to the outer wall of the inner tank can effectively reduce the heat dissipation of the inner tank, which provides an important reference for the improvement of household rice cookers.

Heteroatom-doped carbon nanomaterials with well-defined porous are used as anode materials for SIBs due to their exceptional structural characteristics. In this work, porous N-doped carbon networks composed with ultrathin carbon nanosheets were synthesized via the direct pyrolysis of Vitamin B5. The content of nitrogen, specific surface area, porous structure of the N-doped carbon nanosheet networks were adjusted by changing reaction temperatures. The formation mechasim of the ultrathin N-doped carbon nanosheet networks was also proposed. The generation of calcium carbonate/calcium oxide used as a self-template renders the formation of the porous structure via thermal treatment. The optimized samples possess a superior lithium and sodium storage: 1534 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 vs. Li/Li + and 335 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 vs. Na/Na + , with nearly 100% cycling Coulombic efficiency, remarkable cycling retention and high rate capacity. Additionally, good electrocatalytic activity for ORR via a 4e −1 pathway determines that the resulting primary Zn-air battery showed high discharge power energy density (80 mW cm −2 ), high reversibility and stability over continuous cycles.

Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) is a flexible multicarrier modulation scheme and has been considered as a candidate for the physical layer of the 5G mobile communication system. The bit error rate performance of GFDM is affected by the symbol timing synchronization errors; however, the existing preamble-based symbol timing synchronization scheme for GFDM systems suffers from the timing-ambiguous plateau problem. In this paper, two improved preamble structures are constructed according to the characteristics of GFDM symbols to eliminate the timing-ambiguous plateau. The simulation results under AWGN and multipath fading channels show that the proposed autocorrelation timing synchronization schemes have better timing MSE performance compared to the existing preamble-based timing synchronization schemes.

In view of the flight characteristics of cruise missiles, a new path planning area map, slant distance map, is proposed on the premise that cruise missiles move at constant speed at a certain altitude. The path planning diagram is compared with the one without improvement. Particle swarm optimization (pso) is used to build a mathematical model for intelligent path planning and simulation of multiple cruise missiles. The results show that slant distance graph and particle swarm optimization can solve the path planning problem of multiple cruise missiles.

The load simulation test bench plays an important role in tracked vehicle development. The stability and accuracy of the system have a vital impact on the experimental results. To accurately reproduce the power performance of a tracked vehicle on the test platform, this paper aims to investigate the model, control, and calibration method of the test bench. Firstly, the dynamic model of a tracked vehicle under complex driving conditions is analyzed and established, which takes driving torque as the input and driving wheel speed as the output. Then, considering the uncertainties and disturbances in the system model, a 2-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) control method combined with a disturbance observer is proposed to solve the stability problem of the system. Furthermore, in order to investigate the accuracy of the simulation on the test bed, a method of calibrating the system by a flywheel set with standard inertia is proposed. In the calibration process, the influence of the system resistance torque and the original mechanical inertia on the results is considered, and the response time of the inertia simulation is analyzed in both a steady and dynamic state. Finally, the load simulation test is carried out with the corrected system. The test results show that the system has a high load simulation accuracy under various load simulation tests.

The photoluminescence (PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of ((R)-1-phenyl-N-(pyren-1-ylmethyl)ethanamine) P-R were successfully modulated via fine-tuning and precise control of excited conformation of dimer/excimer by external stimuli. The resulting aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active material (P-R) exhibited CPL with a low dissymmetry factor (∼10−4) in monomeric form, while demonstrating a prominent CPL signal with a higher dissymmetry factor (∼10−3) in thin solid films even without annealing processes.

An experimental study on a rotating detonation engine model using hydrogen/air mixture as propellant was conducted to analyze the initiation characteristics of detonation wave. Three ignition methods, including the ordinary spark plug, high-energy spark plug and thermal-jet tube, were used in the tests. The initiation process of rotating detonation wave was recorded and analyzed by a high frequency pressure measurement system and high-speed photographs. Operating range of the model engine was determined by series of experiments. Results indicate that the model engine could be successfully run by all the three ignition methods. Although the detonation formation time using spark plugs is quite stochastic, increasing the ignition energy can reduce the formation time of the detonation wave. Among the three ignition methods, thermal-jet provides the shortest detonation formation time. It is also found that the operating characteristic of the model engine is independent of the ignition device in the same operating condition. Three operation modes of the engine model have been observed, which are failed initiation of the detonation, unstable detonation and continuous rotating detonation. The experimental results show that the stable operating range can be extended by increasing the fuel mass flow rate.

Germanium (Ge) has been considered as a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries because of its theoretical capacity (1600 mA h g−1). However, its poor electrochemical performances resulting from the large volume variation during Li–Ge alloy/dealloy processes prevent its practical application. Herein, we designed a 3D core/shell structure by encapsulation of Ge in a sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) co-doped three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected macroporous carbon matrix (denoted as Ge@S,N-3DPC). The 3D porous structure can not only buffer the volume change during alloy/dealloy processes, but also facilitate the electrolyte to soak in, offering fast ion/electron pathways. What's more, the co-doping of S and N in carbon could introduce more defects and active sites, which can also help to improve the interfacial adsorption and electrochemical behaviors. When used as an anode material for LIBs, the Ge@S,N-3DPC shows excellent electrochemical performances (1000 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1), outstanding cycling stability (94% capacity retention after 300 cycles) and high rate capability (358 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1). This work develops a general strategy to improve the electrochemical performance of these alloy-type electrode materials with huge volume change in the energy storage area.

Solvent-dependent self-assemblies of an amphiphilic molecule based on perylene bisimide were employed in the fabrication of well-defined millimeter long nanorods and high density nanofibers, respectively. Moreover, the fabricated memory device demonstrated good behaviours with a low operating voltage, high ON/OFF ratio, long retention time, and good stability.

The Sb encapsulated in S and N co-doped three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected macroporous carbon composite (denoted as Sb@S,N-3DPC) has been fabricated by using silica opals as hard template following a carbonization process. The structural and morphological characterizations reveal the uniform 3D-network structure with the Sb nanoparticles embedded homogeneously in the carbon spherical shell. The Sb@S,N-3DPC electrode shows a high reversible capacity of 482 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , displaying good capacity stability (~93% of the initial discharge capacity after 500 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ). The electrode displays superior rate capability and ultralong cyclability (255 mAh g −1 at 2 Ag −1 after 2000 cycles) and also reveals a good rate capability that maintains 160 mAh g −1 at 5 Ag −1 . The excellent electrochemical performance of the Sb@S,N-3DPC is attributed to the 3D-porous carbon network structure and uniform distribution of Sb nanoparticles in carbon matrix, enhancing the conductivity, holding the structure integrity, and thus improving the cycling performance of the anode material. In addition, sulfur and nitrogen co-doping introduced more defects and active sites to the carbon framework, thereby improving the interfacial adsorption and electrochemical behaviors.

Treatment of 1,2-C6H4(SiH3)(SiH3) (1) with Pt(dcpe)(PEt3)2 (dcpe = Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2) in dry toluene at room temperature in the ratio of 1:1 leads to the complex {1,2-C6H4(SiH2)(SiH2)}PtII(dcpe) (2), which can react with proton organic reagent bearing hydroxy group with low steric hindrance to form a tetra-alkoxy substituted silyl platinum(II) compound (3). The structures of complexes (2) and (3) were unambiguously determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies and single crystal X-ray analysis.

A novel set of multifunctional optically active π-conjugated polymers incorporating perylenyl moieties, were designed and synthesized. Chirality transfer and amplification from chiral unit to the main-chain backbone in dilute solution was achieved, which was closely related to the stereocenter in the pendant of a π-conjugated polymer. In addition, annealed films of these polymers exhibited near-infrared emission by direct absorption of visible light, resulting from the introduction of a strong fluorophore perylenyl moiety. Such a design strategy opens up new perspectives for the future development of novel optically active materials with near-infrared emission for photonic applications.

This paper uses DPM model in Fluent to divide the mesh and conduct fluid analysis for the existing family filter, by using the Rosin - Rammler distribution simulated reality of different diameter of the plastic particles’ distribution in the water. Secondly, using particle tracking algorithm to calculate the distribution of particle diameter of the export, so as to check the existing household filter’s ability for the different plastic particle diameter.

This device combines phase change heat storage with air circulation, and proposes a new three-dimensional honeycomb grid structure on the phase change material carrier structure. The reasonable use of steam residual heat and the use of a segmented electromagnetic coil structure reduce the heat loss and power consumption of IH rice cooker. Utilizing the hot steam generated in the heating stage of the rice cooker, the low-temperature waste heat is recycled in the low-temperature phase-change thermal storage module designed by the device. At the same time, the electromagnetic coil is segmented. Besides, the fuzzy control is used to determine the actual amount of rice to be cooked to determine the number of coil segments used in the heating stage to reduce power consumption.

The aim of this work is to design and build a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system for a guided bomb. This paper presents a design scheme, based on the guidance and control system of the guided bomb, and the corresponding test flow of a guided bomb control system to provide a support platform to verify its performance. The design HILS test based on actual conditions is also described. Based on the similarity theory, we provide three examples of simulation experiments. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the HILS system of the guided bomb.

In this paper, a fully non-contact second harmonic generation (SHG) technique using a pair of air-coupled ultrasonic transducers is developed and the feasibility of the technique is investigated through the evaluation of surface cracks of concrete beams subjected to the bending load. The reliability of developed technique is subsequently validated by comparing the non-contact nonlinear ultrasonic measurements with measurement results based on contact-type sensors, where the coefficient of variation of non-contact measurements is averagely about 46% of the contact measurements. The defined nonlinear parameter is found to have a monotonically increasing trend with the growth of concrete crack, and the nonlinear parameter corresponding to the largest crack increases about 7 times from its initial value corresponding to the sample in intact state. In contrast, the increase of linear parameter namely the time-of-flight of surface wave is only about 40%. The difference as high as one order of magnitude verifies the high sensitivity of developed air-coupled SHG technique. With consideration of the easily removable characteristic of air-coupled ultrasonic measurements, the developed SHG technique could be promising for the large scale quality control of concrete structures in engineering practice.

Coix lacryma-jobi L. is an important minor cereal with a high nutritional and medicinal value in Asian countries. The hilly region of South China is the secondary center of diversity of Coix lacryma-jobi L. In the present study, we took a sample of 139 Coix lacryma-jobi L. genotypes from four geographical regions in Southwest China and analyzed the genetic diversity and population structure using AFLP markers. Six primer combinations detected a total of 743 (89.52%) polymorphic loci. The percentage of polymorphic bands within the four geographical populations ranged from 56.02% (Guangxi) to 86.75% (Guizhou). The overall genetic diversity of 139 Coix lacryma-jobi L. was relatively low (h ranged from 0.1854 to 0.2564). The neighbor-joining method grouped all Coix lacryma-jobi L. genotypes into two clusters with no geographical affinity observed among genotypes within the same group. The Fst indicated the two clusters existed great genetic differentiation. AMOVA analysis showed the molecular variation within populations was much higher than that among populations of geographical regions and subpopulations derived from STRUCTURE. Human activities and the natural outcrossing system of Coix lacryma-jobi L. may have a great influence on its distribution, genetic diversity, and population structure. Our study provides useful information for local breeding programs of Coix lacryma-jobi L. as well.

This paper investigates the degradation of concrete integrity under the rising temperature using a nonlinear ultrasonic second harmonic generation (SHG) technique based on a fully non-contact approach. The microscopic cracks accumulated during the course of thermal damage is then analytically and experimentally quantified by the elastic wave velocity inversion method and X-ray computed tomography (CT) technique, respectively. The nonlinear parameter calculated by the non-contact SHG technique not only shows a higher sensitivity to the damage growth than traditional macroscopic ultrasonic parameter such as wave velocity, but also presents an excellent correlation with microscopic quantified crack density by showing a proportionally increase with the propagation distance of ultrasonic waves. The experimental findings in this work indicate that the non-contact SHG technique can truly reveal the progressive microscopic cracking of concrete through the macroscopic nondestructive measurements and is suitable for the assessment of globally distributed damage with a high sensitivity and reliability.

The plant Na+/H+ antiporter (NHX) plays a significant role in cellular ion homeostasis. Herein, an Na+/H+ antiporter gene, SpNHX1 from the Sesuvium portulacastrum plant, was obtained by homology-cloning method. The SpNHX1 gene contains 2113 bp with an open-reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 554 amino acid residues with an estimated molecular mass of 61.27 kDa and an isoelectric point of 7.24. The amino acid sequences of SpNHX1 shared a high similarity with Arabidopsis thaliana AtNHX1 (75.81%), AtNHX2 (77.12%) and Oryza sativa OsNHX1 (73.10%). SpNHX1 contains an amiloride-binding region (FFIYLLPPI), which is a highly-conserved domain in plant Na+/H+ antiporters. RT-PCR (reverse transcriptional PCR) analysis showed that the SpNHX1 gene had a high expression level in roots compared to other tissues under normal conditions. The qRT-PCR (quantitative real-time PCR) results indicated that NaCl treatment induced the expression of SpNHX1 gene in the roots, but its transcriptional levels were not influenced by the ABA, PEG, H2O2, heat (42 °C) or cold (4 °C) stresses. The growth of yeast cells expressing SpNHX1 was better than the non-transgenic control cells in the presence of 30 mM NaCl, 0.4 M KCl, or 0.5 mM LiCl. Furthermore, transgenic yeast cells with SpNHX1 accumulated more Na+ relative to control cells under salinity stress. These results suggested that SpNHX1 was a key determinant in the salt-stress response in Sesuvium portulacastrum.

Stimuli-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was successfully achieved through fine-tuning the conformation of a perylenyl dyad by using external stimuli. Monomer CPL was clearly detected from an inherent achiral monochromophore system in a simple perylene–carbazole dyad, and concentration-dependent CPL was observed from ‘good solvent’, giving an excimer-like CPL emission with a peak maximum at 643 nm. Moreover, the CPL bands depended on the aggregated state, which was identical to the emission changes in the THF–H2O system. It is noteworthy that the perylene–carbazole dyad emitted efficient CPL in thin films even without annealing processes. The specific perylenyl–carbazole structure plays a crucial role in CPL in response to the external environment. This novel molecular design strategy opens up a new perspective for the future development of smart CPL-active organic dyads.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a tropical and subtropical plant and susceptible to chilling injury. In this research, a C-repeat binding factor (CBF)-like gene (GenBank accession number JQ339740) has been isolated from cassava, and named as MeCBF1. The full-length DNA of MeCBF1 is 1,037 base pair (bp), without intron. The 5′ untranslated region is 102 bp, the 3′ untranslated region is 239 bp, and the open reading frame is 696 bp encoding 231 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of MeCBF1 contains two CBF conserved motifs of PKK(P/R)AGRxKFxETRHP and DSxWR. The MeCBF1 shows 83 % homology to the CRT/DRE binding factor 1 from Hevea brasiliensis (Accession no. AAY43213.1). However, in cassava, the MeCBF1 target genes showed low similarity to the CBF/DREB regulated genes in Arabidopsis thaliana. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that the MeCBF1 was highly expressed in stems and leaves, and lowly expressed in roots. In addition, the expression of the MeCBF1 quickly responded to low temperature stress (4 °C). These results suggest that, the MeCBF1 is functional in cassava. Further studies on the MeCBF1 might be helpful to reveal molecular mechanism of cassava’s high sensitivity to low temperature.

The properties of spray-induced vortex-like structures for asymmetric pressure swirl atomizer were studied experimentally with different injection pressures. The high-speed Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) was used to study the spray characteristics such as velocity and vorticity. The vortex centers were identified by velocity weighted vorticity. The translational velocity components of vortex centers were computed from its displacement divided by the time interval. For five different pressure conditions, the motion trajectories of vortex center were the same in an earlier period of spray, but were different in a later period of spray. The normalized translational velocity of vortex center and normalized time were introduced to compare with vortex ring model. The results indicated that the normalized axial translational velocity decreased with increasing normalized time, which converged to the predictions of the model in long time limit where α = −0.75 in the turbulent case. However, the results for the normalized radial translational velocity were different from the predictions of the model. The normalized radial translational velocity decreased with the increase of the normalized time when the injection pressure was lower than a critical value, but it obviously increased with the increase of the normalized time in case of the injection pressure higher than the critical value. Furthermore, the average vorticities at the vortex center were obtained and increased with the increase of the injection pressure. This study provides references for developing spray theory and improving injection technology.

Glycine betaine (GB) accumulation is involved in abiotic stress. However, it is not known whether BADH, the key enzyme of GB synthesis, utilizes the antioxidant system to confer drought stress tolerance. In this study, a novel member of the ALDH10 gene family, SpBADH, was isolated from Sesuvium portulacastrum. The expression of this gene was up-regulated by NaCl, PEG6000, H2O2, ABA and high temperature in S. portulacastrum. SpBADH overexpression in Arabidopsis resulted in higher BADH activity and GB content and might increase tolerance to drought/osmotic stresses, specifically strong tolerance to drought stress. Transgenic lines exhibited lower MDA and H2O2 contents but higher proline, POD, SOD and CAT contents than the wild type under drought and osmotic stresses. SpBADH overexpression in Arabidopsis also enhanced the expression of ROS-related genes including AtSOD, AtPOD, AtCAT, AtAPX and Atpsb under drought and osmotic stresses. Thus, SpBADH increases plant tolerance to drought or osmotic stresses by reducing H2O2, increasing proline, and activating antioxidative enzymes to improve ROS scavenging.

A hollow cathode configuration was designed for a Grimm-type glow discharge atomic emission spectrometer (GD-AES). The operating conditions including the hollow cathode dimension, applied pulsed voltage and argon pressure, were optimized. The 10-μs pulses at 1.8 kV in a 3-torr discharge worked best. A pulsed hollow cathode Grimm discharge (HCG) offers several advantages: efficient excitation and ionization; high sensitivity; temporal spectral resolution; and rapid sample interchange. The capability of this source for the determination of elemental composition in metals, alloys and in solution residues is investigated. Samples used in this study included copper and steel standards.

The already established technique of pulsed glow discharge spectroscopy is extended in these studies to the application of a second pulse applied at a variable delay after a first pulse. The net discharge then consists of a series of double pulses in which each second pulse in the series enhances the emission intensity of the analyte atoms produced by the first pulse. A copper hollow cathode is used to show high emission enhancement for atom and ion lines of the sputtered species and the neon discharge gas species. The technique shows promise for further study by both atomic emission and mass spectrometry.
