Abstract

Structural defects are ubiquitous for polycrystalline perovskite films, compromising device performance and stability. Herein, a universal method is developed to overcome this issue by incorporating halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) into perovskite polycrystalline films. CsPbBr3 QDs are deposited on four types of halide perovskite films (CsPbBr3, CsPbIBr2, CsPbBrI2, and MAPbI3) and the interactions are triggered by annealing. The ions in the CsPbBr3 QDs are released into the thin films to passivate defects, and concurrently the hydrophobic ligands of QDs self‐assemble on the film surfaces and grain boundaries to reduce the defect density and enhance the film stability. For all QD‐treated films, PL emission intensity and carrier lifetime are significantly improved, and surface morphology and composition uniformity are also optimized. Furthermore, after the QD treatment, light‐induced phase segregation and degradation in mixed‐halide perovskite films are suppressed, and the efficiency of mixed‐halide CsPbIBr2 solar cells is remarkably improved to over 11% from 8.7%. Overall, this work provides a general approach to achieving high‐quality halide perovskite films with suppressed phase segregation, reduced defects, and enhanced stability for optoelectronic applications. Abstract

Rice husks (or rice hulls) pre-treated with aqueous potassium hydroxide solutions showed excellent glucose yields during enzymatic saccharification. CO2 addition to the hydroxide solutions precipitated the dissolved rice husk silica as a nanoporous powder, while Ca(OH)2 addition regenerated the hydroxide solution and precipitated the dissolved lignin. Fractionation of the biomass was thus achieved using CO2 addition as a reversible pH-switch, and the hydroxide could be repeatedly recycled while maintaining biomass pre-treatment and fractionation efficacy.

Synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were employed to carry out in situ studies on the growth and evolution of platinum nanocrystals in solution. The platinum nanocrystals in the high-concentration reaction were observed to form branched structures and grow at much greater rates under a kinetically controlled regime.

Abstract

Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) are emerging as a potentially cheaper alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the larger abundance of sodium and in some cases the similar intercalation chemistry to LIBs. Here we report the solid state synthesized K-modified P2 Na0.7Mn0.8Mg0.2O2 which adopts hexagonal P63/mmc symmetry. The second charge/discharge capacity for the as-prepared material is 115/111 mA h g−1 between 1.5–4.2 V at a current density of 15 mA g−1, which reduces to 61/60 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles. Scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS) analysis shows a heterogeneous distribution of K and solid state 23Na NMR illustrates that the presence of K perturbs the local environment of Na within the P2 Na0.7Mn0.8Mg0.2O2 crystal structure. Larger scale X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) data on the K L-edge also illustrate that K is present on the surface of electrodes in preference to the bulk. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data illustrates that the P2 structural motif is preserved, featuring a solid solution reaction for most of charge–discharge except at the charged and discharged states where multiple phases are present. The K-modified sample of P2 Na0.7Mn0.8Mg0.2O2 is compared with the K-free samples in terms of both structural evolution and electrochemical performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

90. How Size and Composition of Cobalt Doped Iron Oxide Nanoparticle Tracers Enhance Magnetic Particle Imaging Performance

Abstract

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a promising diagnostic imaging technique that enables direct and precise tracking of magnetic tracers. The optimization of iron oxide-based nanoparticle tracers is of utmost importance in MPI for attaining high sensitivity and good spatial resolution. Currently, the state-of-the-art MPI tracers utilize undoped, magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs). In this study, we present the first comprehensive analysis of how doping with cobalt influences the MPI performance of iron oxide-based NPs. We observed a 1.4–1.7-fold and 1.2–1.3-fold enhancement in the saturation magnetization (Msat) value by doping Co into 9 and 20 nm magnetite NPs, respectively. The amplification in the maximum point spread function (PSF) signal showed a significant increase, ranging from 1.6 to 1.8 times higher for both 9 and 20 nm NPs when subjected to doping with 12 at. % Co. Importantly, in NPs with a higher degree of doping of 22 at. % Co, the augmentation in maximum PSF signal was even more remarkable, achieving a 2-fold increase when compared to undoped magnetite NPs. By introducing Co doping, we show that tracers can be created that have excellent MPI performance while achieving a smaller size, making them highly suitable for a wide range of in vivo applications.
