Abstract

African American director Antoine Fuqua's Tears of the Sun, a 2003 war film made with US Navy cooperation, imagines the intervention of Navy SEALs in an ethnic cleansing being conducted against Christians by Nigerian Muslims. It is at once an exercise in black diasporic consciousness and an expression of American exceptionalism. The director aimed to raise awareness of contemporary African crises, but the picture is also the closest Hollywood combat cinema came in the immediate post-9/11 years to addressing and endorsing the polarizing discourse and militarism of the Bush administration. The film's use of reductive religious imagery, its weak box office return, and its generally hostile reception overseas expose its failure as a tool of diplomacy and reveal the waning ability of triumphalist Hollywood cinema to define or explain the 'War on Terror'. Abstract

Examines the factors in the social process whereby sexual partners with similar characteristics are chosen more frequently than would be expected by chance. Summarizes findings in the literature on, for example, biological bases, measured intelligence, psychological characteristics. Social factors of propinquity — religious affiliation, socio‐economic class and ethnic status, terminal age of education – so noticeable in America, are unlikely to be as marked in mate selection in Britain. Nevertheless assortative mailing mating is strong for social variables and relatively weak for physical and psychological ones. Full statistical tables and a sixty‐five item reading list. Abstract

Peripheral edema is an occasional finding in the preanesthetic evaluation of patients in all age groups. It should be looked for in every patient anticipating surgery, and its correction is an essential part of the preparation for anesthesia. Edema of the lower extremities is commonly associated with varicosities, congestive heart failure, renal disease, hepatic disorders, and poor nutrition. In the differential diagnosis the results of both physical examination and laboratory tests are important, particularly as regards the possibility of protein depletion and the danger of hypovolemia. The authors believe that preoperative restoration of blood volume in the absence of an emergency should always be by high protein nutritional diet.
