Since entering the eastern EU at the start of 2014, African swine fever (ASF) has spread locally in the wild boar population, independently of outbreaks in domestic pigs. No correlation between the density of the wild boar population and the case notification in an area has been observed. The source of virus introduction appeared to be the low biosecurity level in backyard farms; yet, direct contact between pigs and wild boar has not been reported. Potential wild boar management strategies aimed at controlling ASF were evaluated. First, the published literature was searched for evidence of changes in wild boar demography after implementing different management strategies. A reduction in a wild boar population of more than 60 % as a result of conventional hunting has not been documented in Europe. Secondly, during a consultation meeting, 30 experts identified different wild boar management tools to indirectly combat ASF spread. In the third step, an epidemiological simulation model was developed, to compare the effects of implementing individual or combinations of management tools to control ASF. The model demonstrated that measures such as attempts to reduce the wild boar populations more than 70 % would, in theory, be effective in controlling ASF, but in practice would impossible to be achieved in one hunting season. On the other hand, conventional management strategies, such as implementing a feeding ban or targeted hunting of females, can effectively prevent the spread of ASF in the control area only after multiple years of application. The model predicted that a combination of different tools, such as the exclusion of contact to carcasses and the intensification of conventional hunting, reducing reproduction in the following year by 30‐40%, would be effective to stop the spread of ASF in wild boar.

This opinion reviews information on small‐scale dairy cow farming systems in Europe, including the impact of production diseases on welfare of cows, and proposes a methodology for welfare assessment in those systems. To address specific expectations of consumers that food be produced locally or regionally or maintaining acceptable animal welfare conditions, in addition to herd size, criteria to define farms as “non‐conventional” were proposed. Several sources were investigated for identifying criteria for the description and categorisation of small‐scale farms, including dairy umbrella organisations and literature. In addition to herd size (up to 75 cows), proposed criteria related to small‐scale farming comprise the workforce source, input level, indigenous breed use and production type certification. To cover the large diversity of farming systems across Europe, it was proposed that farms meeting at least two of these criteria be considered non‐conventional. To adapt the welfare assessment to small‐scale farms, the same risk factors and welfare consequences, as measured by corresponding animal‐based measures identified in previous opinions for intensive farming systems were considered to be also relevant for small‐scale systems. In addition, factors related to resources provided on pasture (e.g. shelter), management of pasture (e.g. mixing herds) and management of the cows (e.g. use of local breeds) were considered more likely to be present in small‐scale systems. An on‐farm survey was run to collect data for welfare assessment from 124 European farms. The distribution of risk factors and animal‐based measures varied across the full range in study farms and showed similar patterns in farms with different grazing systems (from no time to full year on pasture). The animal‐based measures identified for intensive farming are well suited for application in small‐scale dairy farms. Production disease impact on the individual animal's welfare state does not depend on herd size or farming system.

This opinion investigated the use of perches for laying hens in cage and non‐cage systems. It is based on various activities reviewing the effects of perch height and design on hen health and welfare. Systematic and extensive literature reviews were conducted to assess the scientific evidence about hen motivation to grasp and seek elevation, and the appropriate height of perches as well as other features (position, material, colour, temperature, shape, width and length). In addition, an expert knowledge elicitation (EKE) exercise was run with technical hearing experts to discuss and prioritise the various design aspects of perches. Overall, the body of literature on perches is limited. Relevant features of perches are often confounded with others. In the literature, the most commonly used animal‐based measures to assess perch adequacy are keel bone damages, foot pad lesions and perch use by hens. Overall, hens seek elevation during the day as well as during the night, when they select a site for roosting. Elevated perches allow hens to monitor the environment, to escape from other hens, avoid disturbances and improve thermoregulation. For night‐time roosting hens show a preference for perches higher than 60cm compared with lower perches. However, elevated perches can have negative consequences with increased prevalence of keel deformities and fractures. The risk of injury increases when hens have to jump a distance of more than 80cm vertically, horizontally or diagonally to reach or leave a perch, or jump an angle between 45 and 90° (measured at the horizontal plane). Material, shape, length and width of the perch also influence perch preference by hens. The EKE exercise suggests that an adequate perch is elevated, accessible and functional (providing sufficient overview). The opinion concludes that for the design of an adequate perch, different features of perches need to be further investigated and integrated.

As part of a broader control strategy within herds known to be infected with Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP), individual animal testing is generally conducted to identify infected animals for action, usually culling. Opportunities are now available to quantitatively compare different testing strategies (combinations of tests) in known infected herds. This study evaluates the effectiveness, cost, and cost-effectiveness of different testing strategies to identify infected animals at a single round of testing within dairy herds known to be MAP infected. A model was developed, taking account of both within-herd infection dynamics and test performance, to simulate the use of different tests at a single round of testing in a known infected herd. Model inputs included the number of animals at different stages of infection, the sensitivity and specificity of each test, and the costs of testing and culling. Testing strategies included either milk or serum ELISA alone or with fecal culture in series. Model outputs included effectiveness (detection fraction, the proportion of truly infected animals in the herd that are successfully detected by the testing strategy), cost, and cost-effectiveness (testing cost per true positive detected, total cost per true positive detected). Several assumptions were made: MAP was introduced with a single animal and no management interventions were implemented to limit within-herd transmission of MAP before this test. In medium herds, between 7 and 26% of infected animals are detected at a single round of testing, the former using the milk ELISA and fecal culture in series 5 yr after MAP introduction and the latter using fecal culture alone 15 yr after MAP introduction. The combined costs of testing and culling at a single round of testing increases with time since introduction of MAP infection, with culling costs being much greater than testing costs. The cost-effectiveness of testing varied by testing strategy. It was also greater at 5 yr, compared with 10 or 15 yr, since MAP introduction, highlighting the importance of early detection. Future work is needed to evaluate these testing strategies in subsequent rounds of testing as well as accounting for different herd dynamics and different levels of herd biocontainment. SUMMARYRelevance of epidemiological models depends on assumptions on the population structure and dynamics, on the biology of the host–parasite interaction, and on mathematical modelling. In this paper we reviewed published models of the bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) spread within a herd. Modelling options and assumptions on herd dynamics and BVDV transmission were discussed. A cattle herd is a population with a controlled size. Animals are separated into subgroups according to their age or their physiological status inducing heterogeneity of horizontal transmission. Complexity of models results from: (1) horizontal and vertical virus transmission, (2) birth of persistently infected animals, (3) excretion by transiently and persistently infected animals. Areas where there was a lack of knowledge were identified. Assumptions on the force of infection used to model the horizontal virus transmission were presented and discussed. We proposed possible ways of improving models (e.g. force of infection, validation) and essential model features for further BVDV models.

International audience; Qualitative validation consists in showing that a model is able to mimic available observed data. In population level biological models, the available data frequently represent a group status, such as pool testing, rather than the individual statuses. They are aggregated. Our objective was to explore an approach for qualitative validation of a model with aggregated data and to apply it to validate a stochastic model simulating the bovine viral-diarrhoea virus (BVDV) spread within a dairy cattle herd. Repeated measures of the level of BVDV-specific antibodies in the bulk-tank milk (total milk production of a herd) were used to summarise the BVDV herd status. First, a domain of validation was defined to ensure a comparison restricted to dynamics of pathogen spread well identified among observed aggregated data (new herd infection with a wide BVDV spread). For simulations, scenarios were defined and simulation outputs at the individual animal level were aggregated at the herd level using an aggregation function. Comparison was done only for observed data and simulated aggregated outputs that were in the domain of validation. The validity of our BVDV model was not rejected. Drawbacks and ways of improvement of the approach are discussed

The efficiency of a test-and-cull programme to control BVDV spread within a dairy herd was assessed using a stochastic model. A single virus introduction by a non-PI dam carrying a PI foetus was simulated in a typical western-France dairy herd. Herd monitoring in test-and-cull programme enabled us to detect virus spread within 1 year after introduction in 87% of the replications. The test-and-cull programme reduced the length of the virus persistence. The extent of infection was moderately reduced.

Production losses and treatment expenditures consecutive to bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection in a dairy herd were calculated by partial budgeting based on published estimates of production effects. Overall costs (losses plus expenditures) resulted in a decreased gross margin of 10.7 euros and 19.0 per 1000 l of milk for an average and severe infection, respectively. With a milk quota system allowing no lease of quota, assuming adjustment of the herd size by the farmer to produce the quota, decrease in gross margin was limited to 7.9 euros and 13.9 per 1000 l of milk.

A collective zoo-sanitary control scheme for BVDV has been implemented in Brittany in successive steps since 1998. Prior evaluation of prevalence and dynamics of infection through bulk-milk ELISA showed that 40% of the dairy herds were likely to be free of BVDV but that, in the long term, no improvement was to be expected without control of new infections. The next step was a test-and-cull programme for PI animals in ELISA positive herds. Ten percentage of the herds were found to have at least one PI animal. The incidence decreased during this step. To lower costs of testing traded animals, a database was developed to collect all the available information to trace animals already known to be non-PI.

The relationships between the herd-somatic-cell count (SCC) pattern on a test day and the incidence of clinical mastitis in the subsequent period were studied by collecting health data and monthly records from 2 years (1995-1997) from 121 farms located in the west of France. A total of 980 herd-periods (from one test day to the following one) were analyzed. The outcome variable was the incidence density of clinical mastitis (ICM) within the herd-period. The herd-SCC pattern on a test day was described by cross-combining the proportions of cows with low SCC (50,000 cells/ml) or with high SCC (250,000 cells/ml). The relationship between herd-SCC pattern and subsequent ICM was assessed using a generalized linear mixed model. A sensitivity analysis evaluated the effect of different proportions of cows with low SCC on significance and magnitude of the relationship. Risk of clinical mastitis was expressed as a risk ratio (RR) in comparison to a moderate herd-SCC level (with low proportions of cows with low or high SCC). Median ICM was 0.38 cases per 365 cow-days at risk (first and third quartiles: 0 and 0.88). In the situations where few cows (15%) had SCC250,000 cells/ml, ICM was higher (RR1.31) when the proportion of cows with low SCC exceeded 50% than in the reference situation. Risk ratios increased as the proportion of cows with low SCC increased from 40 to 60%. In the situations where the proportion of cows with SCC250,000 cells/ml exceeded 15%, ICM was higher compared to the reference situation (whatever the proportion of low SCC). Risk ratios were also higher when the proportion of cows with low SCC were40-60%, compared to the pattern with the proportion of cows with low SCC below 40%. Herd situations with a high proportion of cows with low SCC appeared to be at increased risk of clinical mastitis.

Depuis 2006, on a assisté en France à l’émergence de 2 maladies à transmission vectorielle chez les ruminants. Pour détecter de tels évènements, une solution consiste à collecter et à analyser en routine des données associées à leur occurrence de manière non spécifique. Cette démarche est connue sous le nom de surveillance syndromique. L’objectif de ce travail était de tester des indicateurs construits à partir des dates de vêlage et des dates d’inséminations artificielles pour la détection de l’émergence de maladies à transmission vectorielle chez les bovins laitiers. Les données collectées dans la Meuse lors de l’émergence de la fièvre catarrhale ovine (FCO) en 2007 ont été utilisées pour construire 5 indicateurs. Trois de ces indicateurs étaient basés sur l’intervalle entre la première et la deuxième insémination après vêlage. Deux indicateurs étaient basés sur l’intervalle entre la dernière date d’insémination connue et le vêlage. L’indicateur détectant l’émergence de la FCO le plus précocement et donnant le moins de fausses alarmes mesurait la proportion de vaches avec une gestation raccourcie de quelques jours. Dans la Meuse, on a observé un excès de 30 à 90 gestations courtes par semaine par rapport au nombre attendu dans les 8 semaines suivant la première déclaration. Etant donné que l’évènement mesuré n’était pas anormal d’un point de vue physiologique et sa relative rareté à l’échelle d’un département, on peut imaginer qu’il soit dur à identifier par les vétérinaires et les éleveurs. Ce travail souligne l’intérêt de la mutualisation des données pour la détection précoce de l’émergence de maladies.

Pigs have a need for manipulable materials to satisfy a range of behavioural needs, which can be different in different classes of pig. When these needs are not met, a range of adverse welfare consequences result, one of these being an increased risk for tail-biting in weaners and rearing pigs. The ability to control the risk of tail-biting is essential when aiming to avoid tail-docking. Based on available scientific information this Opinion identifies the multiple interactions between risk factors, welfare consequences and animal and non-animal-based measures on the two subjects requested (i) the absence of functional manipulable materials, for pigs at different stages in life and (ii) tail-biting, for weaners and rearing pigs only. An attempt is made to quantify the relationships between the identified interactions by carrying out a statistical analysis of information from available databases, those being an international dataset collected using the Welfare Quality® protocol, which was not designed to evaluate risk factors for tail-biting and therefore, it had limitations in fitness for this analysis, and a large Finnish dataset with undocked pigs. Based on the current state of knowledge, the AHAW Panel proposes two simple tool-boxes for on farm use to assess (i) the functionality of the supplied manipulable material and (ii) the presence and strength of risk factors for tail biting. Both proposed tool-boxes include a combination of the most important resource-based and animal-based measures. Further development and validation of decision–support tools for customised farm assessment is strongly recommended and a proposal for harmonised data collection across the range of European farming circumstances is presented. A series of further recommendations are made by the AHAW Panel.

International audience; In response to increasing risks of emerging infectious diseases, syndromic surveillance can be a suitable approach to detect outbreaks of such diseases across a large territory in an early phase. To implement a syndromic surveillance system, the primary challenge is to find appropriate health-related data. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether routinely collected dates of reproductive events in dairy cattle could be used to build indicators of health anomalies for syndromic surveillance. The evaluation was performed on data collected in France between 2003 and 2009. First, a set of 5 indicators was proposed to assess several types of reproductive disorders. For each indicator, the demographic coverage over the total number of cattle at risk was analyzed in time and space. Second, the ability to detect an emerging disease in an early phase was retrospectively evaluated during epidemics of bluetongue serotypes 1 and 8 (BTV-1, BTV-8) in France in 2007 and 2008. Reproductive indicators were analyzed weekly during these epidemics for each indicator in each infected French district (16 in 2007 and 50 in 2008 out of 94 districts). The indicators were able to detect the BTV epidemics despite their low demographic coverage on a weekly basis relatively to total number of cattle (median=1.21%; range=0-11.7%). Four indicators related to abortions, late embryonic death, and short gestations were abnormally elevated during both BTV epidemics. Median times to abnormal elevations in these indicators were 20 to 71 d after the first notification of clinical signs of BTV by veterinarians. These results demonstrate that reproduction data can be used as indicators of disease emergences, whereas in the specific case of these BTV epidemics, detection via these indicators was later than clinical detection by veterinarians. The emergence of bluetongue in 2007 in France was associated with gestations that were a few days shorter than expected. A short gestation indicator underwent high elevations relative to prior random fluctuations and was the earliest (out of the 4 indicators) to show abnormal elevations, making it possible to detect this emergence.

International audience; Two culicoides-borne diseases, Bluetongue (BTV) and Schmallenberg, have emerged in the European cattle population since 2006. Other diseases transmitted by these vectors could emerge. This justifies the development of syndromic surveillance programs whereby one or several indicators would be routinely monitored for the early detection of emerging diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate milk yield from milk recording in dairy cattle as an indicator to be included in an emerging disease surveillance system. It was hypothesized that emergences would result in episodes of low milk production clustered in space and time. The 2007 BTV epizootic in France was used as a case study. Because it had already emerged in neighbouring countries, the disease emergence was expected and notification was mandatory. Herd-test-day milk productions were predicted for the entire country for 2006 and 2007 from herd historical data using linear mixed models. The differences between observed and predicted milk productions were averaged per week and per municipality and used as input for a space-time prospective scan statistic. Log likelihood ratios (LLR) associated with clusters were used to define alarms. The threshold chosen was a trade-off between detection timeliness and the number of false alarms per week. The first four BTV notifications occurred on the 12th (two notifications), 13th and 27th of July 2007. The 12th of July was considered to be the date of emergence. Alarms occurring before the 1st of March 2007 were considered to be false alarms. Using an LLR of 50, there were an average of 1.7 false alarms per week and the BTV emergence was detected seven weeks after emergence. Using an LLR of 100, there were an average of 0.8 false alarms per week and the BTV emergence was detected 9 weeks after emergence. Detection may have been delayed because of a discontinuation of milk recording between mid-July and mid-August. The first cluster with an LLR > 100 located in the emergence area was further investigated. A difference between observed and predicted production of >1 kg/cow/day was observed around the time of emergence. However, a difference of equal magnitude was observed during the year preceding the outbreak. Milk production predicted from herd history alone did not allow the detection of the 2007 BTV emergence in France. Further research should be conducted on improving the prediction of test-day milk yield and on combining it with other indicators based on routinely collected data.

International audience; Following the emergence of the Bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV-8) in France in 2006, a surveillance system (both passive and active) was implemented to detect and follow precociously the progression of the epizootic wave. This system did not allow a precise estimation of the extent of the epizootic. Infection by BTV-8 is associated with a decrease of fertility. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a decrease in fertility can be used to evidence the under-reporting of cases during an epizootic and to quantify to what extent non-reported cases contribute to the total burden of the epizootic. The cow fertility in herds in the outbreak area (reported or not) was monitored around the date of clinical signs. A geostatistical interpolation method was used to estimate a date of clinical signs for non-reported herds. This interpolation was based on the spatiotemporal dynamic of confirmed case herds reported in 2007. Decreases in fertility were evidenced for both types of herds around the date of clinical signs. In non-reported herds, the decrease fertility was large (60% of the effect in reported herds), suggesting that some of these herds have been infected by the virus during 2007. Production losses in non-reported infected herds could thus contribute to an important part of the total burden of the epizootic. Overall, results indicate that performance data can be used to evidence the under-reporting during an epizootic. This approach could be generalized to pathogens that affect cattle's performance, including zoonotic agents such as Coxiella burnetii or Rift Valley fever virus.

The EFSA’s Panel on Animal Health and Welfare (AHAW Panel) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the use of a low atmosphere pressure system (LAPS) for stunning poultry. Four documents were provided by the European Commission (EC) as the basis for an assessment of the extent to which the LAPS is able to provide a level of animal welfare at least equivalent to that ensured by the current allowed methods for stunning poultry. The LAPS is described as rendering poultry unconscious by gradually reducing oxygen tension in the atmosphere leading to progressive hypoxia in the birds. In order to be allowed in the EU, new stunning methods must ensure 1) absence of pain, distress and suffering until the onset of unconsciousness, and 2) that the animal remains unconscious until death. The submitted studies were peer-reviewed by the AHAW Panel as outlined in its “Guidance on the assessment criteria for studies evaluating the effectiveness of stunning intervention regarding animal protection at the time of killing”. It is unclear from the submitted documents whether the rate of decompression used in LAPS induces unconsciousness and death without causing avoidable pain and suffering in poultry. The assessed studies did not pass the eligibility assessment and, therefore, no further assessment was undertaken.

International audience; Risk of culling consequent to the main health disorders occurring in the current production systems is reviewed. Survival analysis including health disorders as time-dependent variables is considered to be the most appropriate method to assess their effects because they allow a better description of the exact follow-up of disease history. Farmers preferentially consider health events in the current lactation and/or those occurring in early stages of lactation for making culling decisions. The unfavourable direct effects on culling of dystocia and udder disorders (mastitis and teat injuries) are clearly demonstrated, whereas there are variations between studies on the association between metabolic and reproductive disorders and culling. These variations may be due to differences in study designs, populations involved and methods. Consequences, in terms of estimated effect of health disorders, of methodological choices (e.g. whether or not including in the models descriptors for milk yield and/or reproductive performance) are discussed. Metabolic and reproductive disorders may act indirectly through a subsequent decrease in milk yield and reproductive performance. The impact of health disorders on longevity is on average weak, compared to the impact of low milk yield potential and poor reproductive performance. Herd characteristics (availability of heifers, quota, farmer's attitude towards risk and uncertainty...) modify the risk for a cow to be culled for a given health disorder. Aims of further studies could be (1) to interpret the meaning and to analyse the reliability of culling reasons information, (2) to evaluate the relative effect on culling of health disorders and performance (milk yield and reproduction) in different parities, (3) to investigate the role of components of the herd effect on the risk of culling.; Risque de réforme associé à la survenue de troubles de santé chez la vache laitière : revue et discussion critique. La revue porte sur le risque de réforme consécutif à la survenue des principaux troubles de santé dans les systèmes de production actuels. Pour estimer ce risque, les modèles d'analyse de survie dans lesquels les troubles de santé sont définis en tant que variables dépendantes du temps apparaissent les plus appropriés car ils permettent de tenir compte des variations de leurs effets au cours de la carrière des animaux. Pour décider la réforme, les éleveurs tiennent compte préférentiellement des évènements de santé survenant dans la lactation en cours et/ou en début de lactation. Dans l'ensemble des études, le risque de réforme après survenue d'une dystocie et/ou d'un trouble de la mamelle (mammites, blessures du trayon) est augmenté, alors que les travaux divergent quant aux effets des troubles métaboliques et de la reproduction. Les différences de populations d'étude, variables d'étude et méthodes utilisées peuvent expliquer ces différences de résultats. Les conséquences, en terme d'effets estimés, des choix méthodologiques effectués (par exemple, le choix d'inclure ou non dans les modèles des descripteurs des performances de production et de reproduction dans la lactation de réforme) sont discutées. L'effet des troubles métaboliques et de la reproduction sur le risque de réforme serait plutôt indirect, via la diminution des performances qu'ils peuvent induire. L'effet des troubles de santé est en moyenne plus faible que celui de faibles performances de production et de reproduction. Pour une vache donnée, le risque de réforme consécutif à la survenue d'un trouble de santé dépend fortement des caractéristiques de l'élevage (disponibilité en génisses de remplacement, situation par rapport au quota, ...). L'intérêt de nouveaux travaux (1) pour préciser le sens et analyser la fiabilité de l'information relative aux motifs de réforme, (2) pour évaluer l'impact relatif des troubles de santé et des performances sur la réforme dans les différentes parités, (3) pour identifier et quantifier le rôle des facteurs d'élevage sur le risque de réforme est souligné.

Effects on reproduction of dystocia, stillbirth, abortion, milk fever, retained placenta, metritis, cystic ovaries, anestrus, ketosis, displaced abomasum, locomotor disorders, and mastitis were reviewed. Papers were considered if they provided quantitative estimates of diseases on days to first estrus, days to first service, conception rate at first service, days from first service to conception, days to conception or days open, calving interval, conception rates at various days post partum (dpp), and number of services per conception or per cow. Only papers in English in peer-reviewed journals were selected for analysis of post 1960 data from intensive dairy regions. Seventy papers fulfilled the selection criteria. Summary estimates of disease effects were calculated according to meta-analysis methods, and study designs were described in detail to identify possible heterogeneity of the results. Stillbirth, milk fever, displaced abomasum and mastitis had no effect on reproduction. Clinical ketosis, dystocia and retained placenta were associated with 2 to 3 more days to first service and with a 4 to 10% lower conception rate at first service, resulting in 6 to 12 more days to conception. Locomotor disorders were associated with an average increase of 12 d to conception, with wide variation depending on lesions and stage of occurrence. Metritis was associated with 7 more days to first service, 20% lower conception rate at first service, resulting in 19 more days to conception. Cystic ovaries were associated with 6 to 11 more days to first service and with 20 to 30 more days to conception. Anestrus was associated with 26 more days to first service and with an 18% lower conception rate at first service, resulting in 41 more days to conception. Abortion was associated with 70 to 80 more days to conception.

The reduction in milk yield (kg) on test day associated with individual somatic cell count (SCC) up to 600 000 cells/ml was assessed using monthly cow-records collected for a 1-year period in 105 Holstein herds located in western France. Monthly records with SCC over 600 000 cells/ml, and/or occurring after a clinical case of mastitis were excluded. The resulting dataset comprised 32 148 records from 4968 cows. A mixed autoregressive linear model was used to assess, on test day, the effects on the milk yield (dependent variable) of herd-season (random), SCC (after natural logarithmic transformation), days in milk on which SCC were recorded and an interaction term between SCC and days in milk. Regression coefficients associated with SCC were expressed as a polynomial of days in milk. The reduction in milk yield in kg associated with an increase in SCC was calculated in deviation from a reference SCC value set at 50 000 cells/ml as a function of SCC and days in milk on which SCC were recorded. In primiparous cows, the reduction in milk yield was 0.30 kg for an SCC of 100 000 cells/ml, 0.61 kg for an SCC of 200 000 cells/ml and 1.09 kg for an SCC of 600 000 cells/ml. In multiparous cows, the reduction in milk yield in kg increased with parity and with days in milk. For cows in parity 2 on day 50 pp, the reduction in milk yield was 0.32 kg for an SCC of 100 000 cells/ml, 0.63 kg for an SCC of 200 000 cells/ml and 1.13 kg for an SCC of 600 000 cells/ml. For cows in parity 2 with SCC of 200 000 cells/ml, the reduction in milk yield was 0.63 kg on day 50, 0.92 kg on day 150 and 1.77 kg on day 250 pp. For cows in parity ≥3 on day 50 pp, the reduction in milk yield was 0.30 kg for an SCC of 100 000 cells/ml, 0.60 kg for an SCC of 200 000 cells/ml and 1.07 kg for an SCC of 600 000 cells/ml. For cows in parity ≥3 with SCC of 200 000 cells/ml, the reduction in milk yield was 0.60 kg on day 50, 1.09 kg on day 150 and 1.85 kg on day 250 pp.

The study describes the profiles of culled cows in order to assess the possible contribution to economic losses due to health disorders. Data regarding dates of birth, final calving and culling, parity at culling, milk yield at the two first test-days of the final lactation and reason(s) for culling were collected in a 5-year survey, carried out from 1989 to 1994 in 84 commercial Holstein farms in western France. Polytomous logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between parity, calving-to-culling interval, milk yield and eight groups of primary culling reasons (i.e. udder disorders; infertility or reproductive disorders; lameness or foot/leg defects; emergency culling reasons; other health disorders; low milk yield; sales for dairy purpose; and other voluntary culling reasons). Out of a total of 5133 culled cows, the proportions of culls, for each of these groups of reasons, were 12.4, 28.4, 2.7, 3.9, 4.6, 16.7, 5.9, and 25.4%, respectively. Cows culled for udder disorders left the herd earlier in lactation and were more frequently at parities 4–6 than cows culled for voluntary reasons. In contrast, cows culled for infertility were younger and culled later within lactation. They were also higher yielding cows than those culled for other reasons. Cows culled for lameness were similar to those of the voluntarily culling group. Cows culled for emergency reasons were more frequently younger cows in early lactation. Cows culled for other health disorders left the herd early in lactation, but at a higher parity than the voluntarily culled cows. These results suggest that most of the culls related to health could be contributing to economic loss. However, special priority should be given to reduce culling for reproductive problems, which is the most costly exit reason.

In 2006 and 2011 two vector borne diseases have emerged in the European ruminant population: bluetongue (BTV) and Schmallenberg. Milk yields collected as part of milk recording represent an abundant source of information that could be used for emerging disease surveillance. The aim of this work was to evaluate monthly collected milk yields as an indicator of vector borne disease emergence. Milk recording data were used to detect the 2007 BTV emergence in France. Expected test-day milk productions per cow were predicted for 2006 and 2007 from linear mixed models, based on 3 years of herd milk records history. Clusters of deviation between predicted and observed milk productions were detected using a scan statistic as implemented in SaTScan™. Log likelihood ratios (LLR) were used to rank the clusters and to set a threshold for the definition of an alarm. The choice of a threshold was a trade-off between the number of alarms before the emergence (false alarms) and the timeliness of the detection once the disease had emerged. Using an LLR of 50 (100), there were an average of 1.7 (0.8) false alarms per week and the BTV emergence was detected 7 (9) weeks after the first notification. The first cluster with an LLR>100 located in the emergence area was further investigated. A difference between observed and predicted production of greater than 1 kg/cow/day was observed around the time of emergence. However, a difference of equal magnitude was observed during the year preceding the outbreak. We conclude that milk production predicted from herd history alone does not allow the detection of an emerging infectious disease that would have had an effect on milk production similar to BTV.

Small hive beetle (SHB) and Tropilaelaps are bee diseases considered exotic in the EU. SHBis a flying coleopteran that can be attracted to the odours of bees and bee products. In addition, SHB can survive and reproduce on a variety of ripe fruits. Tropilaelaps is an ectoparasite that does not survive long without honey bee brood and cannot fly by itself. The methodology used to assess the risk of entry of these pests in this scientific opinion was adapted from a pest risk assessment for entry used in the field of plant health. A qualitative risk assessment was performed taking into account current legislation but excluding the implementation of risk reduction options. This approach allowed the assessment of the worst case scenario for each risk factor. The risk pathways with a high risk of pest entry are ‘import of bee products (use in apiculture)’ for SHB and ‘accidental import of bees’ (unintended presence of bees in a non-bee consignment) for both pests. The other risk pathways are associated with a moderate or low risk of SHB or Tropilaelaps entry into the risk assessment area. Risk reduction options were assessed separately from the risk assessment. Examples of risk reduction options with a high effectiveness and a high technical feasibility are the use of health certificates to guarantee pest freedom of consignments and keeping consignments without honey bee brood. Options with a high effectiveness and technical feasibility were identified in all risk pathways except ‘accidental import of bees’ and ‘dispersal of the pest via natural means and/or flight’. The AHAW Panel identified the need for validated rapid detection methods and for handling and sampling of imported bees in insect-proof environments. Education and training could help to monitor the pest distribution and to prevent pest entry by improving awareness, skills and expertise.

This guidance defines the assessment process and the criteria that will be applied by the Animal Health and Welfare Panel to studies on known new or modified legal stunning interventions to determine their suitability for further assessment. The criteria that need to be fulfilled are eligibility criteria, reporting quality criteria and methodological quality criteria. The eligibility criteria are based upon the legislation and previously published scientific data. They focus on the intervention and the outcomes of interest, i.e. immediate onset of unconsciousness and insensibility or absence of avoidable pain, distress and suffering until the loss of consciousness and sensibility, and duration of the unconsciousness and insensibility (until death). If a study fulfils the eligibility criteria, it will be assessed regarding a set of reporting quality criteria that are based on the REFLECT and the STROBE statements. As a final step in this first assessment phase, the methodological quality of the submitted study will be assessed. If the criteria regarding eligibility, reporting quality and methodological quality are fulfilled, a full assessment of the animal welfare implications of the proposed alternative stunning intervention, including both pre‐stunning and stunning phases, and an evaluation of the quality, strength and external validity of the evidence presented would be carried out at the next level of the assessment. In the case that the criteria regarding eligibility and reporting quality and methodological quality are not fulfilled, the assessment report of the panel will highlight the shortcomings and indicate where improvements are required before the study can be assessed further. In addition to the assessment criteria, the guidance also specifies general aspects applicable to studies on stunning interventions that should be considered when studying the effectiveness of stunning interventions.

This scientific opinion proposes toolboxes of welfare indicators for developing monitoring procedures at slaughterhouses for sheep and goats stunned with the head‐only electrical method or slaughtered without stunning. In particular, the opinion proposes welfare indicators together with their corresponding outcomes of consciousness, unconsciousness or death. In the case of slaughter with head‐only electrical stunning, the opinion proposes a toolbox to assess consciousness at three key stages of monitoring: (a) after electrical stunning and during shackling and hoisting, (b) during neck cutting and (c) during bleeding. For slaughter without stunning, another toolbox is proposed for (a) assessing unconsciousness before releasing the animals from restraint, and (b) confirming death before carcass dressing begins. Various activities‐including a systematic literature review, an online survey and stakeholders’ and hearing experts’ meetings‐were conducted to gather information about the sensitivity, specificity and feasibility of the indicators. On the basis of such information, a methodology was developed to select the most appropriate indicators to be used in the monitoring procedures. The frequency of checking differs according to the role of each person with responsibility for ensuring animal welfare. The personnel performing stunning, shackling, hoisting and/or bleeding will have to check all the animals and confirm that they are not conscious following stunning or before releasing from the restraint. For the animal welfare officer, who has the overall responsibility for animal welfare, a mathematical model for the sampling protocols is proposed, giving some allowance to set the sample size of animals to be checked at a given throughput rate (total number of animals slaughtered in the slaughterhouses) and threshold failure rate (number of potential failures‐proportion of animals that are conscious after stunning). Finally, different risk factors and scenarios are proposed to define a ‘normal’ or a ‘reinforced’ monitoring protocol, according to the needs of the slaughterhouse.

International audience; Two vector borne diseases, caused by the Bluetongue and Schmallenberg viruses respectively, have emerged in the European ruminant populations since 2006. Several diseases are transmitted by the same vectors and could emerge in the future. Syndromic surveillance, which consists in the routine monitoring of indicators for the detection of adverse health events, may allow an early detection. Milk yield is routinely measured in a large proportion of dairy herds and could be incorporated as an indicator in a surveillance system. However, few studies have evaluated continuous indicators for syndromic surveillance. The aim of this study was to develop a framework for the quantification of both disease characteristics and model predictive abilities that are important for a continuous indicator to be sensitive, timely and specific for the detection of a vector-borne disease emergence. Emergences with a range of spread characteristics and effects on milk production were simulated. Milk yields collected monthly in 48 713 French dairy herds were used to simulate 576 disease emergence scenarios. First, the effect of disease characteristics on the sensitivity and timeliness of detection were assessed: Spatio-temporal clusters of low milk production were detected with a scan statistic using the difference between observed and simulated milk yields as input. In a second step, the system specificity was evaluated by running the scan statistic on the difference between observed and predicted milk yields, in the absence of simulated emergence. The timeliness of detection depended mostly on how easily the disease spread between and within herds. The time and location of the emergence or adding random noise to the simulated effects had a limited impact on the timeliness of detection. The main limitation of the system was the low specificity i.e. the high number of clusters detected from the difference between observed and predicted productions, in the absence of disease.

National audience; Decisions in animal health management depend on a large variety of situations and problems. To illustrate this, seven major diseases of dairy herds were analysed to identify the main limiting factors for the effectiveness of the current control schemes and the perspectives toward better control in the field. Regarding intramammary infections, research directions focus on the development of multivalent vaccines, tools to better select cows to be treated with antibiotics, on-farm intervention methodology and the enhancement of animal resistance via a contribution of genome-wide selection techniques. For gastro-intestinal strongyloses, priority was also given to rational and selective anthelmintic treatments, genetic improvement of innate resistance seeming less a priority than for small ruminants. The control of Mortellaro disease, a locomotor disorder, should receive attention to develop alternatives because of the forecasted ban of the principal disinfectants used for footbaths. Q fever control can be reached by prolonged vaccination of the whole herd and adequate management of parturition hygiene. Johne disease is probably a good candidate disease for genomic selection, especially given the absence of treatment and very effective vaccine and the presence of a quite promising background of resistance/resilience. Infection by BVDV seems to be controllable by only sanitary measures, associated or not with a vaccination scheme. Eradication of exotic serotypes of BTV can be reached by targeted surveillance and quick and massive vaccination. Specificities in etiology, epidemiology and control techniques of the diseases under study do not quite allow drawing generic conclusions.; Les décisions de gestion de la santé animale correspondent à un large éventail de situations et de problèmes. Illustrant ce constat, sept maladies majeures des troupeaux bovins laitiers sont examinées pour identifier les facteurs les plus courants limitant l’efficacité des plans de maîtrise ainsi que les perspectives d’amélioration de la maîtrise sur le terrain. Pour les infections intra-mammaires, la recherche vise à la mise au point de vaccins multivalents, le ciblage des vaches à traiter par les antibactériens, la méthodologie des interventions en ferme, et l’augmentation de la résistance innée par la sélection génomique. Pour les strongyloses gastro-intestinales, les recherches prioritaires s’orientent aussi vers les stratégies de traitement anthelminthique raisonné et ciblé, la voie génétique semblant moins prioritaire que chez les petits ruminants. La maîtrise de la maladie de Mortellaro, affection de l’appareil locomoteur, ne pourra plus recourir aux désinfectants classiquement utilisés dans les pédiluves et des approches alternatives sont nécessaires. La maîtrise de la fièvre Q est à rechercher par la vaccination de l’ensemble du troupeau sur plusieurs années et l’hygiène de la parturition. La paratuberculose pourrait à terme être maîtrisée par la sélection génomique, en raison de l’absence de traitement et de vaccin efficaces et de l’existence de bases génétiques de résistance/résilience prometteuses. La maîtrise de l’infection par le virus BVDV semble pouvoir être atteinte par des mesures sanitaires combinées ou non avec la vaccination. La quasi-éradication des sérotypes exotiques du virus de la fièvre catarrhale ovine pourrait être obtenue par la surveillance ciblée et la vaccination massive et rapide. Les spécificités de l’étiologie, de l’épidémiologie et des moyens de maîtrise des maladies étudiées n’autorisent guère de conclusions génériques

The analysis of binary data originating from clustered observations is often a problem in epidemiological studies. In most epidemiological studies on cattle, clustering occurs at two levels: cows are clustered within herds and lactation records are clustered within cows. This paper proposes and assesses a method of eliminating one level of clustering in regression analysis. Data from an observational study were used to assess the relationships between health disorders and culling, by means of logistic regression analysis, in two different ways. In the Random One Lactation (ROL) analysis, ten random selections of one lactation record per cow were done. Logistic regression analysis was performed in each sample separately. Results showed qualitative and quantitative variations between the ten final models. From the ten random samples, a disease was considered as significantly associated with culling, if present in at least four final models. Using a single random sample might give incomplete information. In the All Lactations (AL) analysis, all the available lactation records were included in one model, despite the dependency between lactations. The two methods generally agreed. All diseases significantly related in the AL analysis, except one, were also significantly associated with culling with the ROL analysis. However, differences in the regression coefficients between the ROL and the AL analyses showed the importance of dispersion parameters.

Decreased milk yield and reduced fertility are the primary consequences of infection by bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV-8). These effects must be quantified to fully assess the economic benefit of vaccination. This can be estimated by measuring the effect of BTV-8 exposure on milk yield and fertility for all cows belonging to an infected herd. The objectives of this study were (1) to quantify the mean effect of exposure to BTV-8 on milk yield following natural challenge for cows in herds previously naive, (2) to determine the duration of reduced milk yield before and after the date disease was first detected in the herd to estimate the cumulative loss of milk yield during this period, and (3) to evaluate the influence of the proportion of infected neighboring herds on the reduction in milk yield following exposure to BTV-8. The effects of exposure to BTV-8 during the French outbreak of 2007 were assessed using mixed linear models, which allow adjustment for factors known to influence milk yield. Exposure to BTV-8 was associated with a sharp decrease in milk yield over a period of 6 mo (2 mo before to 4 mo after the reported date of disease detection in the herd). The cumulative loss of milk yield was more than 3% of annual production. The relatively earlier reduction in milk yield in infected herds detected later in the outbreak period suggests that detection of clinical signs was delayed in these herds. Finally, the greatest decrease in milk yield was observed in herds detected early during the outbreak period and located in areas with the highest disease incidence. This may be due to a greater within-herd incidence or to a greater amount of virus injected by midges to individual cows in these herds.

International audience; Pathogen spread within pig host populations can vary depending on within-herd interactions among pigs also called the contact structure. The recommended batch farrowing management, allowing for a fixed-interval mating for groups of sows of equal size, called batches, leads to an all-in/all-out management of pigs in which animals in different batches have no contact. To maintain a profitable pig delivery, producers have to deliver groups of pigs at a given weight, what needs sometimes herd management adaptations. However, producers’ adaptations that avoid delivering pigs below slaughtering weight (out-of-range pigs), result in increasing the contact between animals from different batches. To study the influence of herd management on contact structure and on pig delivery, a stochastic mathematical model representing population dynamics within a farrow-to-finish herd was elaborated. Sixteen management systems were represented combining or not the all-in/all-out management system with producers’ decisions: batch mixing, use of an extra room, suppression of the drying period and sale of post-weaning batches. Two types of contact were considered: via the animals themselves, when batch mixing occurred; and via the room, when decontamination was not complete. The impact of producers’ decisions on contact structure and on pig delivery, differed radically when pig growth was normal and when it was slow (i.e. mean age at slaughtering weight increased by 20%). When pig growth was normal, the all-in/all-out management prevented both contact via the animals and via the room but resulted in 9% of pigs delivered out of range. The use of an extra room or batch mixing decreased this percentage, the latter resulting in very frequent contact between batches via the animals. When pig growth was slow, the all-in/all-out management led to a very high percentage of pigs delivered out of range (almost 80%). The suppression of the drying period at the end of the finishing period and the sale of post-weaning batches induced a significant decrease in this percentage (down to 2% to 20%), the latter allowing to reduce the percentage of batches that made contact via the room (40% instead of 80%). This pig herd model helped to understand the compromise for producers between implementing internal biosecurity or maintaining a profitable pig delivery. Our results show that there was no unique optimal system and that efficient producers’ decisions (for biosecurity and delivery) may differ, depending on pig growth

The transplacental transmission capacity demonstrated for Bluetongue virus serotype 8 (BTV-8) in cattle probably is associated with an increased occurrence of abortions. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effect of BTV-8 exposure on the occurrence of abortions in previously naive dairy cow herds under natural infection conditions, and to determine a possible risk period during pregnancy associated with this increase. Two criteria were considered in order to estimate the occurrence of abortion: late return-to-service after a first artificial insemination (AI), and short gestations. A late return-to-service was defined as a return taking place 90 to 200 days after a first AI. These criteria were compared between cows in herds exposed during the 2007 epizootic in France and cows in herds that were not exposed. To determine the risk period during a pregnancy, variations in the occurrence of abortions were quantified according to the stage of the pregnancy during which the exposure took place. Survival analyses were used to estimate the risk of increased occurrence of abortion associated with BTV-8 exposure, adjusted by the principal factors known to influence the risk of abortion. Exposure to the BTV-8 virus under natural conditions in previously naive dairy herds notified after clinical suspicion during the 2007 epizootic was associated with an increase in the occurrence of abortions, regardless of the stage of pregnancy. The at-risk gestation period depended on the criteria used to detect abortions. The mean effect of BTV-8 exposure in the ensemble of detected outbreaks corresponded to an increase of 6.7% in late return-to-service. BTV-8 exposure during the first 3 mo of gestation was associated with a 15% increase in late return-to-service for cows with no return-to-service at 90 days, while this increase was 6% for exposure starting from the third month of gestation (in outbreaks detected in September). BTV-8 exposure from the third month of gestation was associated with a 1.9% increase of short gestations. The effect of exposure was more pronounced for outbreaks detected early in the epizootic compared with those detected later.

Data from an observational study, carried out during a 4.5 year period (1986–1990), were used to quantify the effects of health disorders on the risk of culling. The study population consisted of 47 commercial Holstein dairy herds from western France, comprising 4123 cows. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationships between health disorders and early and late culling. Fourteen main health disorders with clinical signs and one subclinical disease were studied: abortion, periparturient accident, calving provided with assistance, digestive disorders, ketosis, locomotor disorders, mastitis, metritis, milk fever, cystic ovaries, respiratory disorders, retained placenta, teat injuries, non-traumatic udder disorders and status with respect to milk somatic cell count. Adjustments were made for year, month of calving, parity, breeding value for milk, best of the two first milk production records and reproductive performance. The possible effects of interactions among variables were also studied. The herd effect was taken into account using random effect models. Non-traumatic udder disorders, teat injuries, milk fever and the occurrence of both ketosis and assistance at calving were significantly associated with an increased risk of being early culled (odds ratios (OR) ranging from 1.6 to 10.3). Early and late abortion, late metritis, poor peproductive performance, retained placenta, non-traumatic udder disorders within 45 days post-partum and mastitis occurring in the first 3 months of the lactation were positively associated with a late culling (OR ranging from 1.2 to 6.6). Cows with lower breeding value for milk and higher parities were high risk groups for culling. A lower level of milk production and occurrence of both reproductive disorders and poor reproductive performance were risk factors for late culling.

International audience; Inactivated virus vaccines have been widely used to control bluetongue after introduction of serotype 8 of the bluetongue virus (BTV) in northern Europe in 2006. To evaluate vaccination, quantitative knowledge of its possible side effects is needed. One current adverse reaction with inactivated vaccines is a rise in body temperature, which could reduce cow reproductive performance. The objective of this study was to quantify a possible side effect of vaccination on fertility before the implantation of the embryo of dairy cows under field conditions. The study was performed on herds that were not exposed to BTV. Fertility was assessed by return-to-service following artificial insemination (AI). Biological assumptions for a possible side effect of vaccination were conception failure and embryonic death. Associations between return-to-service rates and vaccine injections were assessed using mixed-logistic regression models and survival analysis. Two models were considered: a 3-week-return-to-service model comparing cows vaccinated between 3 days before and 16 days after AI and unvaccinated cows (assuming an effect on conception failure or early embryonic death), and a 90-day-return-to-service model comparing cows vaccinated between 3 days before and 42 days after AI and unvaccinated cows (assuming an effect on conception failure, early or late embryonic death). Only cows receiving a second vaccine injection between 2 and 7 days after AI had a significantly higher risk of 3-week-returnto- service (RR = 1.19 [1.07–1.33]). This corresponds to an increase of return-to-service by 4 percentage points. A side effect of vaccination could be due to early embryonic death. The slight side effect on fertility associated with vaccination was low compared to effects of BTV-8 exposure on fertility

Within-herd transmission of pathogens occurs either by direct or by indirect contact between susceptible and infected animals. In dairy herds that are structured into groups, the way in which animals encounter each other and share an environment can affect pathogen transmission. Dairy cattle are heterogeneous in terms of susceptibility and infectivity with respect to Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) transmission. It is mainly young animals that are susceptible and adults that are infectious. Both vertical and horizontal transmission through the ingestion of Map shed into the environment by adults and transiently infected calves can occur. Our objective was to assess the effect of contact structure on Map transmission in persistently infected dairy herds and to examine the effect of isolating calves from other calves or from adults before weaning. We developed a stochastic compartmental model of Map transmission in a closed dairy herd. The model reflects the Map infection process and herd management characteristics. Indirect transmission via the environment was modelled explicitly. Six infection states (susceptible, resistant, transiently infectious, latently infected, subclinically infected, and clinically affected) and two contaminated farm area environments (whole farm and calf area) were modelled. Calves were housed in hutches, individual indoor pens, or group indoor pens. Two different levels of exposure of calves to a farm environment contaminated by adults were possible: no exposure and indirect exposure through fomites. Three herd sizes were studied. We found that contacts between calves before weaning did not influence Map transmission in a herd, whereas the level of exposure of calves to an environment contaminated by adults and the starting age of exposure of calves to adults were pivotal. Early culling of clinically affected adults led to a lower prevalence of infectious adults over time. The results were independent of herd size. Despite the many transmission routes that are known, the best control approach is to limit the exposure of calves to adult faeces through the systematic separation of adults and calves in combination with hygiene measures. Reducing contact between calves does not appear effective.

In the rapidly changing context of research on animal health, INRA launched a collective discussion on the challenges facing the field, its distinguishing features, and synergies with biomedical research. As has been declared forcibly by the heads of WHO, FAO and OIE, the challenges facing animal health, beyond diseases transmissible to humans, are critically important and involve food security, agriculture economics, and the ensemble of economic activities associated with agriculture. There are in addition issues related to public health (zoonoses, xenobiotics, antimicrobial resistance), the environment, and animal welfare. Animal health research is distinguished by particular methodologies and scientific questions that stem from the specific biological features of domestic species and from animal husbandry practices. It generally does not explore the same scientific questions as research on human biology, even when the same pathogens are being studied, and the discipline is rooted in a very specific agricultural and economic context. Generic and methodological synergies nevertheless exist with biomedical research, particularly with regard to tools and biological models. Certain domestic species furthermore present more functional similarities with humans than laboratory rodents. The singularity of animal health research in relation to biomedical research should be taken into account in the organization, evaluation, and funding of the field through a policy that clearly recognizes the specific issues at stake. At the same time, the One Health approach should facilitate closer collaboration between biomedical and animal health research at the level of research teams and programmes.

Epidemiological models enable to better understand the dynamics of infectious diseases and to assess ex-ante control strategies. For Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), possible transmission routes have been described, but Map spread in a herd and the relative importance of the routes are currently insufficiently understood to prioritize control measures. We aim to predict early after Map introduction in a dairy cattle herd whether infection is likely to fade out or persist, when no control measures are implemented, using a modelling approach. Both vertical transmission and horizontal transmission via the ingestion of colostrum, milk, or faeces present in the contaminated environment were modelled. Calf-to-calf indirect transmission was possible. Six health states were represented: susceptible, transiently infectious, latently infected, subclinically infected, clinically affected, and resistant. The model was partially validated by comparing the simulated prevalence with field data. Housing facilities and contacts between animals were specifically considered for calves and heifers. After the introduction of one infected animal in a naive herd, fadeout occurred in 66% of the runs. When Map persisted, the prevalence of infected animals increased to 88% in 25 years. The two main transmission routes were via the farm's environment and in utero transmission. Calf-to-calf transmission was minor. Fadeout versus Map persistence could be differentiated with the number of clinically affected animals, which was rarely above one when fadeout occurred. Therefore, early detection of affected animals is crucial in preventing Map persistence in dairy herds.

Research into the relationships between diseases of cows and culling in dairy herds is reviewed with emphasis on both results and their factors of variation. Tables provide comparisons between studies depending on their designs and their results. Differences between the study populations are outlined. The studied health disorders are extensively reported and their risks of misclassification are discussed. The other variables considered as possible risk factors for culling are reviewed. Some individual characteristics of cows (age, milk production level, reproductive performances) are usually taken into account in the analyses, whereas the herd effect on the individual risk of culling is poorly documented. The statistical methods for the analysis of health disorders as risk factors for culling are summarized. Certain health disorders (dystocia, mastitis) increase the risk of culling regardless of the production systems considered. However, for other health disorders (milk fever, metritis, cystic ovaries, retained placenta, locomotor disorders), contradictory results are reported. These discrepancies may result from either actual differences in the production systems studied or differences in methodologies used. The interest of further studies investigating especially the herd effect on the individual risk of culling is displayed.

Dans le contexte très évolutif de la recherche en santé animale, une réflexion sur ses enjeux, ses spécificités et ses synergies avec la recherche biomédicale, a été conduite à l’initiative de l’INRA. Affirmés au premier chef par l’OMS, la FAO et l’OIE, les enjeux en santé animale, hors des maladies transmissibles à l’Homme, sont énormes et touchent à la sécurité alimentaire, l’économie de l’agriculture et l’ensemble des activités économiques qui en découlent. S’y ajoutent les enjeux de santé publique (zoonoses, xénobiotiques, antibiorésistance), environnementaux et de bien-être animal. La recherche en santé animale présente des spécificités d’ordre méthodologique et scientifique, liées notamment aux particularités biologiques des espèces domestiques et aux pratiques d’élevage. Elle n’a pas les mêmes questionnements scientifiques qu’en biologie humaine même lorsqu’elle traite des mêmes agents pathogènes et, connectée aux autres sciences animales (génétique, physiologie, zootechnie), elle s’enracine dans une réalité agricole et économique très spécifique. Des synergies génériques et méthodologiques existent néanmoins avec la recherche biomédicale, en particulier autour des outils et des modèles biologiques. Certaines espèces domestiques (tel le porc) présentent en outre des similitudes fonctionnelles avec l’Homme, plus que le rongeur de laboratoire. Ainsi la singularité de la recherche en santé animale par rapport à la recherche en biologie humaine devrait être prise en compte dans son organisation, son évaluation et son financement, via une politique de reconnaissance des enjeux spécifiques. Simultanément, l’approche one health devrait faciliter une collaboration approfondie entre recherche en biologie humaine et recherche en santé animale, à l’échelle des équipes ou des programmes., In the moving context of research on animal health, a collective discussion has been carried out on its issues, special features and synergism with biomedical research. Strongly enhanced by WHO, FAO and OIE, the issues of animal health are important and deal with food security, agriculture economics and all economical activities that follow from it. Others are related to public health (zoonoses, xenobiotics, antimicrobial resistance), environment and animal welfare. Research on animal health has got special features concerning methodology and scientific questions, among others the particular biological nature of domestic species and breeding practices. Scientific questions are not similar to those of biomedical research, even if dealing with the same pathogens; connected to the other animal sciences (genetics, physiology, animal breeding), research on animal health takes root in a very specific agricultural and economical reality. Nevertheless, generic and methodological synergies do exist with biomedical research, particularly concerning biological tools and models. Some domestic species like pig have functional similarities with Humans, better than with mouse or rat. Thus, the peculiarity of research on animal health compared to biomedical research should be considered in its organisation, evaluation and funding, through a political recognition of specific issues. Simultaneously, the one health approach should facilitate a thorough collaboration between biomedical research and research on animal health, at the levels of research teams and research programmes.
