51. Medication adherence halves COPD patients’ hospitalization risk – evidence from Swiss health insurance data

Abstract: Abstract Medication adherence is vital for patients suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) to mitigate long-term consequences. The impact of poor medication adherence on inferior outcomes like exacerbations leading to hospital admissions is yet to be studied using real-world data. Using Swiss claims data from 2015-2020, we group patients into five categories according to their medication possession ratio. By employing a logistic regression, we quantify each category’s average treatment effect of the medication possession ratio on hospitalized exacerbations. 13,557 COPD patients are included in the analysis. Patients with high medication adherence (daily medication reserve of 80% to 100%) are 51% less likely to incur exacerbation following a hospital stay than patients with the lowest medication adherence (daily medication reserve of 0% to 20%). The study shows that medication adherence varies strongly among Swiss COPD patients. Furthermore, high medication adherence immensely decreases the risk of hospitalized exacerbations.

Abstract: Waveguide QED with cold atoms provides a potent platform for the study of non-equilibrium, many-body, and open-system quantum dynamics. Even with weak coupling and strong photon loss, the collective enhancement of light-atom interactions leads to strong correlations of photons arising in transmission, as shown in recent experiments. Here we apply an improved mean-field theory based on higher-order cumulant expansions to describe the experimentally relevant, but theoretically elusive, regime of weak coupling and strong driving of large ensembles. We determine the transmitted power, squeezing spectra and the degree of second-order coherence, and systematically check the convergence of the results by comparing expansions that truncate cumulants of few-particle correlations at increasing order. This reveals the important role of many-body and long-range correlations between atoms in steady state. Our approach allows to quantify the trade-off between anti-bunching and output power in previously inaccessible parameter regimes. 54. Estimating attitudes toward vaccination: A Bayesian framework

Abstract: Vaccines are among the best tools to limit the spread of preventable diseases. yet, recent years have seen a rise in anti-vaccination sentiments for vaccines against COVID-19, the MMR, and more. It is critical to understand the factors that influence whether a person will accept or reject a vaccine for a given disease. This paper tests a Bayesian model to predict attitudes toward vaccines. with five factors (subjective beliefs concerning danger of illness, safety of the vaccine, prevalence of the disease, perceived social norm, and governmental recommendation). To parameterize the model, Study 1 elicits the full conditional probability table while Study 2 tests model predictions by eliciting people’s priors for COVID-19 and the common flu. We find a good fit between predictions and observations, accounting for 53% and 44% of the variance. This suggests the usefulness of a formal model to capture people’s beliefs about vaccination.

Abstract: Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract: Plastic pollution is a global issue that endangers both human health and the ecosystem. Although interest in sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics has grown, their adoption has been insufficient, and menstrual products are no exception. Disposable menstrual products, such as sanitary napkins, continue to dominate over sustainable options like menstrual cups (MCs). Although studies on women’s perceptions and attitudes toward menstrual hygiene management have abounded, there is a lack of research on the development of promotional strategies for sustainable menstrual products. This study aims to fill this research gap by investigating consumers’ decision-making process in the face of a real-life option regarding menstruation products. In this comparative study, we conducted a labeled discrete choice experiment on consumers in Japan (n = 1,929), Indonesia (n = 2,031), and France (n = 2,067) to reveal their preferences for sanitary napkins, tampons, and MCs. The respondents from each country were divided into three groups (one control group and two treatment groups with information provided). The results showed that in all countries, the information regarding the cost-effectiveness of MCs (i.e., per-use cost) was unequivocally significant, whereas information about their health and environmental benefits was not. Access to free MCs can contribute to their adoption and alleviation of period poverty in all countries, with a relatively moderate acceptance in Japan. The results also showed variations across countries in consumer characteristics (attitude toward menstruation, innovation-friendliness, and green consumption) and the use and perceptions of MCs. Hence, tailored promotional strategies should be considered for each market.

Abstract: L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA) is a rare neurometabolic disorder characterized by accumulation of L2-hydroxyglutarate (L-2-HG) due to mutations in the L2HGDH gene. L-2-HGA patients have a significantly increased lifetime risk of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. Here, we present a 16-year-old girl with L-2-HGA who developed a tumor in the right cerebral hemisphere, which was discovered after left-sided neurological deficits of the patient. Histologically, the tumor had a high-grade diffuse glioma phenotype. DNA sequencing revealed the inactivating homozygous germline L2HGDH mutation as well as inactivating mutations in TP53, BCOR and NF1. Genome-wide DNA-methylation analysis was unable to classify the tumor with high confidence. More detailed analysis revealed that this tumor clustered amongst IDH-wildtype gliomas by methylation profiling and did not show the glioma CpG island methylator phenotype (G-CIMP) in contrast to IDH-mutant diffuse gliomas with accumulated levels of D-2-HG, the stereoisomer of L-2-HD. These findings were against all our expectations given the inhibitory potential of 2-HG on DNA-demethylation enzymes. Our final integrated histomolecular diagnosis of the tumor was diffuse pediatric-type high-grade glioma, H3-wildtype and IDH-wildtype. Due to rapid tumor progression the patient died nine months after initial diagnosis. In this manuscript, we provide extensive molecular characterization of the tumor as well as a literature review focusing on oncogenetic considerations of L-2-HGA-associated CNS tumors.

Abstract: We report on a GaN/AlGaN quantum cascade detector operating in the terahertz spectral range. The device was grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on a c-sapphire substrate and relies on polar GaN/AlGaN step quantum wells. The active region thickness is in micrometer range. The structural, electrical and optical investigations attest of high structural quality of the synthetized nitride material. The detector exhibits a peak photocurrent at 5.7 THz (23.6 meV) with a responsivity of 0.1 mA/W at 10 K under surface normal irradiation through a 10 um period grating. The photocurrent persists up to 20 K.

Abstract: Despite the recent progress in quantum computational algorithms for chemistry, there is a dearth of quantum computational simulations focused on material science applications, especially for the energy sector, where next generation sorbing materials are urgently needed to battle climate change. To drive their development, quantum computing is applied to the problem of CO$_2$ adsorption in Al-fumarate Metal-Organic Frameworks. Fragmentation strategies based on Density Matrix Embedding Theory are applied, using a variational quantum algorithm as a fragment solver, along with active space selection to minimise qubit number. By investigating different fragmentation strategies and solvers, we propose a methodology to apply quantum computing to Al-fumarate interacting with a CO$_2$ molecule, demonstrating the feasibility of treating a complex porous system as a concrete application of quantum computing. Our work paves the way for the use of quantum computing techniques in the quest of sorbents optimisation for more efficient carbon capture and conversion applications.

Abstract: A giant built-in electric field in the growth direction makes excitons in wide GaN/(Al, Ga)N quantum wells spatially indirect even in the absence of any external bias. Significant densities of indirect excitons can accumulate in electrostatic traps imprinted in the quantum well plane by a thin metal layer deposited on top of the heterostructure. By jointly measuring spatially-resolved photoluminescence and photo-induced current, we demonstrate that exciton density in the trap can be controlled via an external electric bias, which is capable of altering the trap depth. Application of a negative bias deepens the trapping potential, but does not lead to any additional accumulation of excitons in the trap. Abstract: Automating quality inspection with computer vision techniques is often a very data-demanding task. Specifically, supervised deep learning requires a large amount of annotated images for training. In practice, collecting and annotating such data is not only costly and laborious, but also inefficient, given the fact that only a few instances may be available for certain defect classes. If working with video frames can increase the number of these instances, it has a major disadvantage: the resulting images will be highly correlated with one another. As a consequence, models trained under such constraints are expected to be very sensitive to input distribution changes, which may be caused in practice by changes in the acquisition system (cameras, lights), in the parts or in the defects aspect. In this work, we demonstrate the use of randomly generated synthetic training images can help tackle domain instability issues, making the trained models more robust to contextual changes. Abstract: Anomaly detection has recently seen great progress in the field of visual inspection. More specifically, the use of classical outlier detection techniques on features extracted by deep pre-trained neural networks have been shown to deliver remarkable performances on the MVTec Anomaly Detection (MVTec AD) dataset. However, like most other anomaly detection strategies, these pre-trained methods assume all training data to be normal. As a consequence, they cannot be considered as fully unsupervised. There exists to our knowledge no work studying these pre-trained methods under fully unsupervised setting. In this work, we first assess the robustness of these pre-trained methods to fully unsupervised context, using polluted training sets (i.e. containing defective samples), and show that these methods are more robust to pollution compared to methods such as CutPaste. We then propose SROC, a Simple Refinement strategy for One Class classification. SROC enables to remove most of the polluted images from the training set, and to recover some of the lost AUC. Abstract: Parasites play a key but overlooked role in the functioning of marine systems. Understanding the drivers of parasite infection in fish is thus crucial. Anisakis levels in the Atlantic horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus resulted from both biotic and environmental drivers. Ontogenic variation of the diet was the first driver of Anisakis level. The nonlinear pattern confirmed that the variation in parasitism was related to ontogenetic dietary shifts. The impact of depth on diet also explained the effect of depth on parasites. In deeper areas, fish only access pelagic prey, where Anisakis presence is high, consistent with the pelagic nature of the parasite. Finally, relative proportions of parasitic burden by tissue appeared to be driven by lipid content. In lipid-rich species like T. trachurus, Anisakis can find favorable conditions in the body cavity and in muscle and avoid the liver. Parasitism levels in fish are thus the result of patterns at play at different levels, and these factors should be better considered before being able to include parasites in an integrated vision of marine ecosystem functioning. Abstract: Abstract Microbial communities are shaped by complex metabolic interactions such as cooperation and competition for resources. Methods to control such interactions could lead to major advances in our ability to better engineer microbial consortia for synthetic biology applications. Here, we use optogenetics to control SUC2 invertase production in yeast, thereby shaping spatial assortment of cooperator and cheater cells. Yeast cells behave as cooperators (i.e., transform sucrose into hexose, a public good) upon blue light illumination or cheaters (i.e., consume hexose produced by cooperators to grow) in the dark. We show that cooperators benefit best from the hexoses they produce when their domain size is constrained between two cut-off length-scales. From an engineering point of view, the system behaves as a bandpass filter. The lower limit is the trace of cheaters’ competition for hexoses, while the upper limit is defined by cooperators’ competition for sucrose. Cooperation mostly occurs at the frontiers with cheater cells, which not only compete for hexoses but also cooperate passively by letting sucrose reach cooperators. We anticipate that this optogenetic method could be applied to shape metabolic interactions in a variety of microbial ecosystems.

Abstract: Skin dynamics contributes to the enriched realism of human body models in rendered scenes. Traditional methods rely on physics-based simulations to accurately reproduce the dynamic behavior of soft tissues. Due to the model complexity and thus the heavy computation, however, they do not directly offer practical solutions to domains where real-time performance is desirable. The quality shapes obtained by physics-based simulations are not fully exploited by example-based or more recent datadriven methods neither, with most of them having focused on the modeling of static skin shapes by leveraging quality data. To address these limitations, we present a learningbased method for dynamic skin deformation. At the core of our work is a recurrent neural network that learns to predict the nonlinear, dynamics-dependent shape change over time from pre-existing mesh deformation sequence data. Our network also learns to predict the variation of skin dynamics across different individuals with varying body shapes. After training the network delivers realistic, high-quality skin dynamics that is specific to a person in a real-time course. We obtain results that significantly saves the computational time, while maintaining comparable prediction quality compared to state-of-the-art results.

Abstract: Brain biopsies are necessary in cases of unclear lesions on imaging studies to establish a treatment plan based on the histologic diagnosis. A previous study investigated the potential of lasers to make brain biopsies less invasive, faster and safer. The study demonstrated that lasers can create highly precise burr holes which themselves can act as a sufficient guide for the biopsy needle. Furthermore, lasers can create tangential canals in the bone which allows to biopsy brain regions that are usually impossible or hazardous to access. Building upon the results of the previous study, further research and technological advancements were pursued. This includes a biopsy needle attachment for the robot, which will be used to simulate brain biopsies using CARLO© (Cold Ablation Robot-guided Laser Osteotome) with its Er:YAG laser and navigated robotic guiding system. The study utilizes five freshly frozen skulls, which are immobilized using a Mayfield clamp. Prior to conducting the experiment, the NeuroPlan© software is employed to plan the path and angle of the biopsies. To align the preexperimental CT with the skull, referencing points on the skull and its surface are registered using a pointer. A small skin incision is performed to reach the area of bone where the laser ablates the bone for the biopsy. Preliminary experimental results suggest that the combined use of laser ablation and a guidance device enables precise bone ablation and accurate needle guidance for biopsies. These initial results demonstrate the potential of integrating laser technology and robotics in neurosurgery, potentially enabling less invasive, faster and safer biopsies, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

Abstract: Previous research, using a variable-centered approach, points out to the possibility that not all victims of bullying have the same mental health and social profile. The aim of the current investigation was to explore whether there are different profiles--related to emotional, behavioral, and social problems--of pure victims of bullying and bully-victims, respectively, by using a person-centered approach. The analytical sample consisted of 224 children and adolescents, aged 8-17 years old (M = 14, SD = 1.97), who self-identified as pure victim or bully-victims. Latent profile analysis (LPA) produced the following four profiles among pure victims of bullying: (1) an asymptomatic profile; (2) a profile with high emotional problems and moderate hyperactivity; (3) a profile with high emotional problems and hyperactivity, but moderate conduct and social problems; and (4) a profile high in conduct and social problems, yet with moderate emotional problems and hyperactivity. Among bully-victims, LPA yielded the following four profiles: (1) an asymptomatic profile; (2) a profile of high conduct, emotional and social problems, but moderate hyperactivity; (3) a profile with high hyperactivity, moderate emotional, and conduct problems; and (4) a profile characterized by high emotional, social problems, and hyperactivity. 88. Evaluating the Relationship between Workplace Spirituality, Self-Efficacy, and Turnover Intention in Higher Education Employees

Abstract: Employee turnover remains a critical factor for organizations to understand to reduce financial and operational risks. High turnover can severely reduce confidence in the workplace, and it is a primary challenge for supervisors to address. The problem that is addressed in this study is the negative financial and operational implications that result from turnover intention in higher due to the lack of understanding of the partial mediating effect of spirituality between self-efficacy and turnover intention in higher education employees. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether spirituality is a partial mediating variable between self-efficacy and turnover intention which is known to have negative financial and operational implications in higher education employees in the western United States. The three guiding theories that were utilized include the self-efficacy theory, the theory of spirituality, and the theory of planned behavior. The study population consisted of two higher education institutions in the Western United States and the survey went out to 2,000 employees. A total of 136 responses were received but only 79 participants answered every study question. The survey utilized instrumentation questions from TIS-6, SAWS, and GSES. Multiple regression analysis was used, and the test results of the regression indicated that 62.7% of the variance in turnover intention, F (2, 76) = 24.642, R = 0.627, R[superscript 2] = 0.393, p < 0.001 implying that workplace spirituality and self-efficacy do have an impact on turnover intention. The study contributed to the existing literature by evaluating the relationship between spirituality, turnover intention, and self-efficacy. This study also provided recent data which suggested that self-efficacy and spirituality do have a partial mediating correlation to turnover intention in higher education employees. Future research should include a training and development program that aims to increase the commitment and culture of workplace spirituality. Additionally, future research can include several demographics including, age, race, gender, religion, and other areas in the world. 89. Main, Mediated, and Moderated Effects of Participating in an After-School Social and Emotional Learning Program on Young Children's Development of Social-Emotional Skills

Abstract: Young children's social and emotional skills (SE skills) are highly predictive of the ease with which they transition to kindergarten as well as their success in the K-12 school system and in life after graduation (Belfield et al., 2015; Blair, 2002; Denham, 2006; Denham et al., 2014; Graziano et al., 2007; Jones et al., 2017; Moffitt et al., 2011; Oberle et al., 2014; Raver & Knitzer, 2002; Trentacosta & Izard, 2007; Zins et al., 2007). Children from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds often enter kindergarten with less well-developed SE skills and lag their peers throughout their school careers (Garcia & Weiss, 2015; Hair et al., 2006; Huffman et al., 2001; Morrissey & Vinopal, 2018; West et al., 2000). Studies of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs indicate that these programs are successful in teaching SE skills, both in school and in after-school programs (ASPs; Corcoran et al., 2018; Durlak et al., 2011; January et al., 2011; Sklad et al., 2012; Taylor et al., 2017). However, less is known about the mechanisms of changes through which SEL programs improve children's SE skills and for whom SEL programs are most beneficial. This dissertation used data collected from WINGS for Kids, a mature, well-developed after-school SEL program attended primarily by African American children from low SES backgrounds in Charleston, S.C., to address the following three sets of questions about the main, moderated and mediated effects of participating in WINGS: (1) whether child and family factors were related to children's participation in WINGS and the direct and indirect relationships between participation and development of SE and self-regulation (SR) skills; (2) whether emotion knowledge acted as a mechanism through which children developed SE and SR skills as a result of taking part in an SEL program; and (3) whether the relationship between taking part in an SEL program and development of SE and SR skills differed based on a variety of child characteristics. The majority of the hypotheses were not supported; however, a few interesting results emerged. The number of family moves, parenting stress, and financial stress predicted children's participation, and kindergarten participation predicted development of SR skills. In 1st grade, gender moderated development of SR skills such that girls benefitted from higher levels of participation as compared to boys. Age moderated teacher-rated bullying behaviors in 1st grade such that relatively older children developed fewer bullying behaviors with higher rates of participation as compared to relatively younger children. In addition, children's development of peer engagement was moderated by their initial levels of peer engagement, such that children with lower peer engagement at the end of kindergarten benefited more from higher rates of participation than children with relatively higher peer engagement. The pattern of largely null results highlights the need for future work that examines fidelity of implementation, including program quality, interrogates the developmental appropriateness of program models, and assures cultural relevance of SEL ASPs for young Black children. The study aim was to identify barriers and facilitators to T1DM self-management for young adults with intellectual disability and the implications for health promotion. Methods: Five male participants with intellectual disability, aged 17-26 years, and seven parents were interviewed between October 2017 and February 2019. Interview data were descriptively analysed. Findings: Two categories for barriers and facilitators were identified: 1) Diabetes self-management is complex (carbohydrate counting, blood glucose level monitoring, insulin therapy); 2) support for diabetes care (reliance on parents and carers, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, mainstream diabetes service support). Abstract: The low frequency lattice vibrations and relaxations are investigated in single crystals of the four 3D hybrid organolead perovskites, MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $\alpha$-FAPbI$_3$, at the Brillouin zone center using Raman and Brillouin scattering and at the zone boundary using inelastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the PbX$_6$ lattice modes in the four compounds can be renormalized into universal curves, highlighting a common vibrational dynamics at the cubic to tetragonal transition. In particular, no soft vibration is observed excluding a displacive-like transitional dynamics. The reorientational (pseudospin) motions of the molecular cations exhibit a seemingly order-disorder character recalling that of plastic crystals, but attributed to a secondary order-parameter. At ultra-low frequency, a quasi-elastic component evidenced by Brillouin scattering and associated to the unresolved central peak observed in neutron scattering, is attributed to center of mass anharmonic motions and rattling of the molecular cations in the perovskite cavities. Abstract: In response to ESA Voyage 2050 announcement of opportunity, we propose an ambitious L-class mission to explore one of the most exciting bodies in the Solar System, Saturn largest moon Titan. Titan, a "world with two oceans", is an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. Titan is also one of the few places in the Solar System with habitability potential. Titan remarkable nature was only partly revealed by the Cassini-Huygens mission and still holds mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. The proposed mission concept POSEIDON (Titan POlar Scout/orbitEr and In situ lake lander DrONe explorer) would perform joint orbital and in situ investigations of Titan. It is designed to build on and exceed the scope and scientific/technological accomplishments of Cassini-Huygens, exploring Titan in ways that were not previously possible, in particular through full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time. In the proposed mission architecture, POSEIDON consists of two major elements: a spacecraft with a large set of instruments that would orbit Titan, preferably in a low-eccentricity polar orbit, and a suite of in situ investigation components, i.e. a lake lander, a "heavy" drone (possibly amphibious) and/or a fleet of mini-drones, dedicated to the exploration of the polar regions. The ideal arrival time at Titan would be slightly before the next northern Spring equinox (2039), as equinoxes are the most active periods to monitor still largely unknown atmospheric and surface seasonal changes. The exploration of Titan northern latitudes with an orbiter and in situ element(s) would be highly complementary with the upcoming NASA New Frontiers Dragonfly mission that will provide in situ exploration of Titan equatorial regions in the mid-2030s., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1908.01374
