Adhesive formulations were developed for the repair of damaged graphite/eposy structures on board ship. These adhesives cure at 24C (75F) or in the moderate temperature range of 67 to 121C (150 to 250F). The formulations which gave the best results in lap shear testing were formulated from high molecular weight and high functionality epoxy resins and a polyamine curing agent. A typical formulation is composed of a cresol novalac epoxy, (Ciba-Geigy ECN 1299), the triglycidyl ether of p-aminophenol, (Ciba-Geigy 0510), and diethylenetriamine, a polyamine curing agent. After a 72 hour cure at 24C (75F) an adhesive compounded from this formulation had much higher lap shear strength at 121C (250F) than did commercially available epoxy, acrylic, and anaerobic adhesives. Aluminum/aluminum bonds tested in a rapid heat-up to 121C (250F) (at 150F/min) and immediate application of load at 121C (250F) had lap shear strength of 1400 psi whereas the commercial adhesives had 500-700 psi strength in the same test. The formulation when cured at 121C (250F) had lap shear strength at 121C (250F) of 2700 psi. Another promising system is the vinyl ester resin system as a moderate temperature, 66C to 121C (150F to 250F), curing adhesive. It has good environmental durability. and methodological research. A rubber-modified epoxy adhesive and the method of making the same is disclosed for use in bonding graphite-epoxy composite structures. The adhesive comprises a two-part formulation, one part being a reaction product of a carboxyl terminated reactive liquid rubber pre-reacted with a bisphenol. A epoxy resin so that linear epoxy-rubber chains are developed. The second part of the adhesive is an amine curing agent. One effective example of the adhesive is formulated as follows: approximately 4 parts by weight of the bisphenol A epoxy resin is mixed per part of a carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile rubber and heated to 170 deg C. At 160 deg C., a catalyst of approximately 0.01 parts by weight of triphenyl phosphene per part of the rubber is added and the mixture stirred for one hour at 170 deg - 175 deg C. to provide the reaction product. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction product may be packaged in pre-measured quantities for mixture, when required, with a curing agent of cycloaliphatic diamine at a ratio of approximately 4:1., Supersedes PAT-APPL-471 417-83.

INVESTIGATIONS OF THE GAS-DRIVEN JET PUMP REVEALED NO FUNDAMENTAL THERMODYNAMICAL OR FLUID MECHANICAL REASON WHICH WOULD PRECLUDE THE PUMPING OF A NET FLOW RATE OF A LIQUID TO A DISCHARGE PRESSURE IN EXCESS OF THE NOZZLE PRESSURE. Gas-consumption between 5.0 and 10.0% should be attainable for these pumps in which the momentum recovery factor of each component is about 0.9. The gas-driven jet pump does not appear applicable to pumping cryogenic propellants or propellants with uncommonly high vapor pressures. The operating characteristics of this pump are strongly influenced by the shape and mechanical design of its components. The velocity recovery factor of the drive nozzle is limited to a value below 0.9 for a drive nozzle employing an injector having a differential pressure of injection which is compatible with the system requirements. Condensibility of the drive gas in the drive liquid is an impediment to the attainment of a high velocity for the 2-phase mixture leaving the drive nozzle. It is possible to mix the drive liquid with the suction liquid, in the mixer, and achieve a momentum recovery in excess of 90%. The volume of the entrained drive gas in the 2-phase mixture entering a properly designed centrifugal separator could be reduced by 95% in flowing through that separator.

Three types of boron/epoxy prepreg tape were prestressed to fracture weak sites along the fiber by winding over 0.3- to 0.6-inch diameter rollers prior to lamination. The prestressed prepreg was then laminated, and design allowable testing was conducted to determine if mechanical strength properties are increased and data scatter is reduced by prestressing. The types of prepreg studied were: standard 'Rigidite' 5505/4 prepreg, carbon substrate boron fiber prepreg, and a prepreg made from 'defect' tungsten substrate boron that was manufactured in a high-speed, low-cost, production process. The strength of angleply composites of both 'Rigidite' 5505/4 and carbon substrate boron composites were unaffected by prestressing. A study was made to determine if prepreg costs could be reduced by manufacturing low-cost 'defect' boron fiber and prestressing it to improve its properties. The results of this study were inconclusive. The test results show prestressing marginally improved some composite properties while others were reduced. On 'Rigidite' 5505/4 unidirectional composites, fatigue strength was significantly improved by prestressing, while longitudinal tensile strength was reduced at room temperature and 350 F. On unidirectional carbon substrate boron composites, the longitudinal tensile strength at room temperature and 350F was increased with attendant variability, while fatigue strength at high stress levels was reduced but not affected at low stress levels.

The research concerns the experimental and theoretical studies of the flow of a predominantly liquid two-phase fluid in nozzles and diffusers, undertaken as part of a longrange program dealing with the development of a gas-driven jet pumpt for rocket engines. The physical description of the flow is based on momentum, heat, and mass transfer phenomena, droplet mechanics, and the influence of flow geometry and operating conditions. As the mass ratio of one of the components is increased, it is imperative to consider at least some aspects of the discreteness of the component of lower volume in mass and energy transfer processes in a theoretical analysis for a first-order prediction of velocities, droplet diameters, and pressure for the flow in an accelerating or nozzle flow and a decelerating or diffuser flow. In the nozzle experiments, the total flow rate and the mass ratio of liquid to gas were varied to establish a series of design and performance parameters. The experimental investigation for diffusing flows was performed employing a conical diffuser and a predominantly liquid medium with the gas in the form of small bubbles dispersed in the liquid. The objects of the research were to determine the feasibility of diffusing a free jet to liquid and the effect of gas entrained in the flowing liquid. (Author)

In response to the discovery of diamonds in modern alluvium within the glaciated area, the Ontario Geological Survey undertook a regional programme of surficial mapping and alluvial sediment sampling to assess potential for diamond-bearing kimberlite. Five varieties of kimberlite-derived indicator minerals were recovered and the composition of three varieties was evaluated, resulting in the identification of G10 Cr-pyrope garnet, inclusion field chromite and Mg ilmenite. The distribution of indicator minerals was examined in the context of the glacial and bedrock geology. Glacial dispersal from non-kimberlitic marker units is restricted, commonly to less than 200 m, and many kimberlite indicator minerals were recovered from samples collected close to cross-cutting NE-SW and NW-SE faults and a strong NE-SW trend in the bedrock.
