In an article in the May-June 2009 "American Psychologist," we discussed a new approach to reducing prejudice and encouraging more positive intergroup relations (Crisp & Turner, 2009). We named the approach imagined intergroup contact and defined it as "the mental simulation of a social interaction with a member or members of an outgroup category" (Crisp & Turner, 2009, p. 234). Our proposition is that simply imagining contact with outgroup members can produce more positive perceptions of outgroups. In his commentary, Honeycutt noted that our "article is excellent in its premise" (p. 129), but he was critical of our decision not to discuss his own work in imagined interactions (IIs). Imagined contact is not a magic cure, and it is not a one-shot solution to the problem of prejudice. But as a first step on the road to reduced prejudice and more positive intergroup relations, it may just turn out to be invaluable.

Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that repeated exposure to out-group-relevant attitude objects would lead to less liking following a threat to identity. The results of the experiments show how social identity threat can be experienced incrementally as a function of exposure.

In a previous study (R. R. C. Hutter & R. J. Crisp, 2005), the authors suggested that one way in which perceivers resolve the dilemma of shared membership of incongruent category combinations is by generating emergent attributes. However, the authors also found evidence that a corresponding process of reduced constituent facilitation occurs. In the present research, the authors aimed to isolate this phenomenon using a response-time methodology. Participants were exposed to subliminal unsurprising or surprising gender-occupation category-combination primes. The authors observed facilitation in overall response times on a subsequent lexical decision task to constituent attributes when the combination primed was unsurprising compared with surprising, but only for female and not for male combinations. The authors suggest that perceivers reduce their application of constituent attributes when processing surprising versus unsurprising combinations. In three experiments, the authors tested the hypothesis that a common ingroup context would moderate evaluations of crossed category targets. In Experiment 1, the typical additive pattern of evaluation across artificial crossed category groups became a social inclusion pattern in a common ingroup context. In Experiment 2, the authors manipulated the importance of real crossed category targets. When the crossed groups were of low importance, the effects of imposing a common ingroup replicated those observed in Experiment 1. For important crossed groups, however, the additive pattern remained. In Experiment 3, the authors measured perceived importance of the crossed groups to social identity prior to introducing a common ingroup context. The effects of a common categorization on evaluations were again moderated by perceived importance. These findings are discussed in the context of integrating crossed categorization and common ingroup identity models of multiple categorization.
