71. Synergistic Catalysis at the Ni/ZrO2–xInterface toward Low-Temperature CO2Methanation

Abstract

The CO2methanation reaction, which achieves the carbon cycle and gains value-added chemicals, has attracted much attention, but the design and exploitation of highly active catalysts remain a big challenge. Herein, zirconium dioxide-supported Ni catalysts toward low-temperature CO2methanation are obtained via structural topological transformation of NiZrAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursors, which have the feature of an interfacial structure (Ni–O–Zr3+–Vö) between Ni nanoparticles and ZrO2–xsupport (0 < x< 1). The optimized catalyst (Ni/ZrO2–x-S2) exhibits exceptional CO2conversion (∼72%) at a temperature as low as 230 °C with a ∼100% selectivity to CH4, without obvious catalyst deactivation within a 110 h reaction at a high gas hourly space velocity of 30,000 mL·g–1·h–1. Markedly, the space–time yield of CH4reaches up to ∼0.17 molCH4·gcat–1·h–1, which is superior to previously reported Ni catalysts evaluated under similar reaction conditions. Both in situ/operando investigations (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure) and catalytic evaluations substantiate the interfacial synergistic catalysis at the Ni/ZrO2–xinterface: the Zr3+–Vö facilitates the activation adsorption of CO2, while the H2molecule experiences dissociation at the metallic Ni sites. This work demonstrates that the metal–support interface effect plays a key role in improving the catalytic behavior toward CO2methanation, which can be extended to other high-performance heterogeneous catalysts toward structure-sensitive systems.

Abstract

Background Arthroscopic surgery is widely used in the treatment of refractory tennis elbow due to its advantages of minimally invasive, safe and direct vision. Intra-capsular arthroscopy(intracapsular method), which is performed via natural cavity, is the mainstream arthroscopic procedure. However, intracapsular method requires the damage of joint capsule and may cause intraoperative neurovascular injury and other complications. In view of the defects of intracapsular method, the surgical scheme of the extracapsular arthroscopy (referred to as "extracapsular method") has emerged. The aim of this study was to investigate the exploration history, key theories, methods, and techniques involved in the evolution from the intracapsular method to the extracapsular method for arthroscopic treatment of tennis elbow, and explore the effectiveness and safety of extracapsular method. Methods Qualitative data were collected via focus group interview. 7 surgeons who were selected through purposive sampling discussed on the theories, methods, and technical specifications of the transition from intracapsular method to extracapsular method. Qualitative data were analysed using NVivo11. Quantitative data of consecutive 43 patients were analysed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the extracapsular method. Descriptive analysis was conducted to analyse the demographic characteristics and clinical outcomes after surgery. Results The experts agreed that the extracapsular method maintains the integrity of joint capsule and avoids complications caused by joint capsule damage. Extracapsular method was considered easy for surgeons to master and convenient to operate. Technical specifications for extracapsular method were formed based on group discussion. The median time for pain relief and recovery of daily activities of 43 patients treated with these specifications were 3 months and 6 weeks, respectively. The satisfaction rates of Mayo Elbow Performance Scores were 87.2%, 95.6%, and 100% respectively at 3, 6, and 12 months after operation. Conclusion On the basis of international peer innovation, the extracapsular method has been continuously developed in our clinical practice to avoid the possible complications of the intracapsular method. The resulting technical specifications have been shown to have good clinical efficacy and safety in a small sample cohort.

Abstract

The development of efficient electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) remains a challenge. Demonstrated here is a NiSn atomic‐pair electrocatalyst (NiSn‐APC) on a hierarchical integrated electrode, which exhibits a synergistic effect in simultaneously promoting the activity and selectivity of the CO2RR to formate. The NiSn atomic pair consists of adjacent Ni and Sn, each coordinated with four nitrogen atoms (N4‐Ni‐Sn‐N4). The as‐prepared NiSn‐APC displays exceptional activity for the CO2RR to formate with a turnover frequency of 4752 h−1, a formate productivity of 36.7 mol h−1 gSn−1 and an utilization degree of active sites (57.9 %), which are superior to previously reported single‐atomic catalysts. Both experimental data and density‐functional theory calculations verify the electron redistribution of Sn imposed by adjacent Ni, which reduces the energy barrier of the *OCHO intermediate and makes this potential‐determining step thermodynamically spontaneous. This synergistic catalysis provides a successful paradigm for rational design and preparation of atomic‐pair electrocatalysts with enhanced performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of nonunion after the Latarjet procedure remains high. The purpose of the present study was to investigate healing and clinical outcomes after a novel arthroscopic coracoid process transfer procedure.Methods: Sixty-three patients who underwent the arthroscopic inlay Bristow procedure combined with Bankart repair were identified, and 51 patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. The key feature of this technique was that the coracoid process was trimmed and fixed into a trough (5 to 10 mm deep) in the glenoid neck with a metal screw. Bone graft union and positioning accuracy were assessed with use of postoperative computed tomography (CT) imaging. Clinical examinations, return to sport, and functional scores (American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons [ASES] and Rowe scores) were recorded.Results: The mean duration of follow-up (and standard deviation) was 41.5 ± 7.7 months (range, 36 to 48 months). Postoperative CT scans showed that the position of coracoid graft was at 4:10 (from 3:50 to 5:00) (referencing the right shoulder) in the sagittal view. The α angle was 16.4° ± 9.5°, with 4 (7.8%) of 51 screws being over-angulated (α > 25°). On the axial view, the graft position was considered to be flush in 33 patients (64.7%), medial in 11 (21.6%), congruent in 7 (13.7%), and lateral or too medial in none. At 1 year, the coracoid graft had healed in 49 patients (96.1%) and had failed to unite in 2 patients. CT scanning, performed for 47 patients, showed grade-0 osteolysis in 9 patients, grade-1 osteolysis in 21 patients, and grade-2 osteolysis in 17 patients. At the time of the latest follow-up, there was a significant increase in the Rowe score (from 35.5 ± 8.3 to 95.7 ± 7.2) and the ASES score (from 71.2 ± 9.7 to 91.5 ± 4.4), and 87.0% of patients were able to return to sport. No arthropathy was observed in any patient.Conclusions: After a minimum 3-year follow-up, the arthroscopic inlay Bristow procedure resulted in a high rate of graft healing, excellent clinical outcomes, and a high rate of return to sports.Level Of Evidence: Therapeutic Level IV. Abstract

Subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS) is characterized by pain experienced through an arc of elevation as the shoulder abducts and diagnosed commonly by Neer test (NT). However, the diagnostic accuracy of NT for SAIS is still limited. Here, a modified Neer test (MNT) was introduced to improve the accuracy of the clinical examination in diagnosing SAIS and differentiating it from frozen shoulder. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic values of MNT in diagnosing SAIS and differentiating it from frozen shoulder. Between January 2015 and June 2015, a prospective study assessed 85 shoulders among 82 patients with shoulder joint disease; 42 patients underwent arthroscopic surgery, and all 82 patients received X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or MRI contrast examinations. The diagnostic criteria are based on arthroscopy and MRI scanning. Using clinical epidemiology and diagnostic tests, we calculated the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and degree of accuracy of MNT in diagnosing SAIS. The diagnostic accuracy rate of MNT in identifying shoulder SAIS was 90.59%, and the specificity was 95.56%. In the diagnosis of SAIS, MNT is a reliable and highly accurate maneuver and seems useful to distinguish this syndrome from frozen shoulder.

95. Design and dynamic analysis of the scissor deployable mechanism used in the drill for replicating ice cores from the borehole wall

Abstract

The deep ice cores preserved within the polar ice sheets hold a wealth of valuable information, and the demand for ice cores in related scientific research is on the rise. Thus, the replication of ice cores from the borehole wall holds significant importance. However, current methods face limitations such as difficulties in whipstock retrieval, extended auxiliary working hours, structural complexity, and the necessity of ice core depth calibration. To address this, this study proposes a novel method for replicating ice cores from the borehole wall utilizing a thermal coring drill bit. The design and dynamic analysis of the scissor deployable mechanism employed to drive the drill bit movement were thoroughly examined through theoretical and simulation studies. The motion characteristics of the drill bit during the replication coring process and the stress–strain behavior of the scissor rods were determined and validated through drill bit movement experiments, demonstrating a maximum error of 10%. The findings reveal that the mechanism can meet the strength requirements across three operating stages: horizontal drilling, vertical coring, and ice core recovery, with maximum loads of approximately 284 N, 749 N, and 970 N, respectively. Increasing the thickness of the scissor rods and reducing their length can augment the load-bearing capacity of the structure. Additionally, the speed transmission characteristics derived from the scissor mechanism can offer theoretical support for the drill's control system.

96. Design and rigid body dynamics analysis of a novel retractable drill bit used in casing-while-drilling

Abstract

Utilizing the Geneva drive mechanism, an inventive retractable drill bit tailored for casing-while-drilling (CwD) applications was developed. This novel design allows the lower segment of the drill bit to be swung outward through rotation, facilitating to drill a larger hole and retrieved effortlessly by raising the drill tools. An exploration into the dynamic behavior of this retractable drill bit under varying drilling conditions was undertaken, focusing on parameters such as weight-on-bit, rotation speed, friction coefficient between the drill bit and rock, and lifting force. Findings from the investigation revealed that, under conditions of 20 kN weight-on-bit, a friction coefficient of 0.3, and a rotation speed of 30 rpm, the drill bit achieved full extension within 3.8 s. Notably, the movement speed of the lower drill bit was notably influenced by weight-on-bit, the friction coefficient, and lifting force, demonstrating accelerated movement with increased values of these factors. Rotation speed, however, exhibited negligible impact on the movement of the drill bit. An indoor experimental examination mirrored the outcomes obtained through simulations. Subsequent to numerical simulations and indoor testing, a large-diameter drill bit was produced and field tested, showcasing its capability to flexibly extend and retract during drilling, achieving an average drilling speed of 1.7 m/h.
