64. One-pot preparation of nano-scaled magnetic-pectin particles (Fe3O4@pectin NPs): cytotoxicity, antioxidant, and anti-liver cancer properties.

Abstract

This work described the one-pot synthesis of orange pectin encapsulated Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Pectin NPs) which is prepared by co-precipitation of Fe(II/(III) ions in alkaline solution mediated by pectin. This process led to formation of magnetic nanoparticles within the network of pectin. Physicochemical characterization of the as-synthesized Fe3O4@Pectin NPs was carried out through Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The in vitro cytotoxic and anti-liver cancer effects of biologically synthesized Fe3O4@Pectin NPs against pleomorphic hepatocellular carcinoma (SNU-387), hepatic ductal carcinoma (LMH/2A), morris hepatoma (McA-RH7777), and novikoff hepatoma (N1-S1 Fudr) cancer cell lines were assessed. The anti-liver cancer properties of the Fe3O4@Pectin NPs could significantly remove pleomorphic hepatocellular carcinoma (SNU-387), hepatic ductal carcinoma (LMH/2A), morris hepatoma (McA-RH7777), and novikoff hepatoma (N1-S1 Fudr) cancer cell lines in a time and concentration-dependent manner by MTT assay. The IC50 of the Fe3O4@Pectin NPs were 8, 13, 10, and 7 µg/mL against pleomorphic hepatocellular carcinoma (SNU-387), hepatic ductal carcinoma (LMH/2A), morris hepatoma (McA-RH7777), and novikoff hepatoma (N1-S1 Fudr) cancer cell lines. The antioxidant activity of Fe3O4@Pectin NPs was determined by DPPH method. The Fe3O4@Pectin NPs showed the high antioxidant activity according to the IC50 value. 65. Drug in Drug: Quorum Sensing Inhibitor in Star-Shaped Antibacterial Polypeptides for Inhibiting and Eradicating Corneal Bacterial Biofilms

Abstract

Biofilm-related bacterial keratitis is a severe ocular infection that can result in drastic vision impairment and even blindness. However, the therapeutic efficiency of clinical antibiotic eyedrops is often compromised because the bacteria in the biofilms resist bactericide viathe community genetic regulation, namely, bacterial quorum sensing. Herein, quercetin (QCT)-loaded star-shaped antibacterial peptide polymer (SAPP), QCT@SAPP, is developed based on a “drug” in a “drug” strategy for inhibiting and eradicating Pseudomonas aeruginosabiofilms on the cornea. The natural antibacterial peptide-mimic SAPP with the positively charged amphipathic structure not only enables QCT@SAPP to penetrate the biofilms readily but also selectively adheres to the highly negatively charged P. aeruginosa, releasing the loaded QCT into the bacteria to regulate quorum sensing by inhibiting lasI, lasR, rhlR, and rhlI. Thanks to its robust bactericidal ability from SAPP, QCT@SAPP can eliminate more than 99.99% of biofilms. Additionally, QCT@SAPP displayed outstanding performance in relieving ocular inflammation by significantly downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and profiting from scavenging reactive oxygen species by releasing QCT, which finally helps to restore visual function. In conclusion, QCT@SAPP, with good compatibility, exerts excellent therapeutic effects in a bacterial keratitis mice model, making it a promising candidate for controlling bacterial biofilm-induced infections, including bacterial keratitis.

66. Progressive failure of frozen sodium sulfate saline sandy soil under uniaxial compression

Abstract

The progressive failure characteristics of geomaterial are a remarkable and challenging topic in geotechnical engineering. To study the effect of salt content and temperature on the progressive failure characteristics of frozen sodium sulfate saline sandy soil, a series of uniaxial compression tests were performed by integrating digital image correlation (DIC) technology into the testing apparatus. The evolution law of the uniaxial compression strength (UCS), the failure strain, and the formation of the shear band of the frozen sodium sulfate saline sandy soil were analyzed. The test results show that within the scope of this study, with the increase of salt content, both the UCS and the shear band angle initially decrease with increasing salt content before showing an increase. In contrast, the failure strain and the width of the shear band exhibit an initial increase followed by a decrease in the samples. In addition, to investigate the brittle failure characteristics of frozen sodium sulfate saline sandy soil, two classic brittleness evaluation methods were employed to quantitatively assess the brittleness level for the soil samples. The findings suggest that the failure characteristics under all test conditions in this study belong to the transition stage between brittle and ductile, indicating that frozen sodium sulfate saline sandy soil exhibits certain brittle behavior under uniaxial compression conditions, and the brittleness index basically decreases and then increases with the rise in salt content.

Abstract

Room temperature liquid metal (galinstan, made up of gallium, indium and tin) is driven to oscillate by the phase change of water in the self-excited oscillating heat pipe (OHP) charged with liquid metal and water. The cross section of the channel is square with the dimension of 3×3 mm2. Liquid metal is a high-performance coolant with ultrahigh thermal conductivity (nearly 27 times higher than water). During the operation of OHP, liquid metal is pushed up by the vapor expansion in the evaporator section, and moves back by the vapor contraction and gravity effects. Then, liquid metal is driven to oscillate continuously between evaporator and condenser in the OHP. Surface tension of galinstan is 10 times higher than water, resulting in a ball shape of liquid metal in the channels. And there is a thin water film existing between liquid metal and inner surface. During the oscillating motion, liquid metal presents the characteristics of a mollusk. Soft liquid metal is extended into metal filament, or breaks up into small liquid metal balls. Then, small liquid metal balls coalesce into a long liquid metal slug, resulting in surface waves due to the released surface energy during the coalescence process. The deformation and deformation recovery of the liquid metal is the result of competition between deforming pressure forces and the reforming surface tension forces. Oscillations of liquid metal will generate flow field disturbance in the base fluid of water and further enhance the heat transfer performance in two-phase flow systems. Abstract

The adjacency effect, the contribution of the neighboring pixels to the radiance of the line of sight pixel, is caused by the Rayleigh scattering of atmospheric molecules and Mie scattering of aerosol particles. The adjacency effect will cause the reflectance of each pixel in the apparent reflectance satellite image to be between the real reflectance and the average background reflectance, reducing the accuracy of the surface reflectance inversion. Therefore, it is very important to remove the adjacency effect to improve the accuracy of retrieving the surface reflectance from satellite images. The most critical issue of the adjacency effect is to accurately calculate the weight of the contribution of each background pixel to the adjacency effect. The weight value of the contribution of each background pixel to the adjacency effect mainly depends on the spatial distance between the target pixel and the background pixel, the difference in reflectance between the target pixel and the background pixel, and the optical thickness of atmospheric molecules and the optical thickness of aerosol. At present, the commonly used weight function for calculating the weight value considers only the influence of optical thickness and spatial distance on the weight value. These weight functions are applied to a relatively uniform surface. However, when these weight functions are applied to an inhomogeneous surface, they will greatly reduce the accuracy of the adjacency effect correction. The combination of ground features in satellite images with the sub-meter spatial resolution is complex, so the influence of the difference in reflectance between the target pixel and the background pixel on the adjacency effect must be considered. The adaptive atmospheric correction algorithm proposed in this paper can adjust the weight value of the contribution of background pixels to the adjacency effect according to the spatial distance between the target pixel and the background pixel, the difference in reflectance between the target pixel and the background pixel, and the difference between the atmospheric molecules’ optical thickness and aerosol optical thickness. The adaptive atmospheric correction algorithm is used to correct the adjacency effect on GF-2 panchromatic satellite images. The results show that the adaptive atmospheric correction algorithm can effectively remove the adjacency effect in sub-meter spatial resolution optical satellite images, improve both the accuracy of quantitative study and the satellite image quality.

Abstract

The image quality of optical remote sensing satellite is affected by the atmosphere, thus the image needs to be corrected. Due to the spatial and temporal variability of atmospheric conditions, correction by using synchronous atmospheric parameters can effectively improve the remote sensing image quality. For this reason, a small light spaceborne instrument, the atmospheric synchronous correction device (airborne prototype), is developed by AIOFM of CAS(Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences). With this instrument, of which the detection mode is timing synchronization and spatial coverage, the atmospheric parameters consistent with the images to be corrected in time and space can be obtained, and then the correction is achieved by radiative transfer model. To verify the technical process and treatment effect of spaceborne atmospheric correction system, the first airborne experiment is designed and completed. The experiment is implemented by the "satellite-airborne-ground" synchronous measuring method. A high resolution(0.4 m) camera and the atmospheric correction device are equipped on the aircraft, which photograph the ground with the satellite observation over the top simultaneously. And aerosol optical depth (AOD) and columnar water vapor (CWV) in the imagery area are also acquired, which are used for the atmospheric correction for satellite and aerial images. Experimental results show that using the AOD and CWV of imagery area retrieved by the data obtained by the device to correct aviation and satellite images, can improve image definition and contrast by more than 30%, and increase MTF by more than 1 time, which means atmospheric correction for satellite images by using the data of spaceborne atmospheric synchronous correction device is accurate and effective.
