Search

There is growing evidence for the presence of blueshifted Fe K absorption lines in a number of radio-quiet AGNs and QSOs. These may be fundamental to probe flow dynamics near supermassive black holes. Here we aim at verifying and better characterising the existence of such Fe K absorption at ~8-10 keV in the luminous Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk509, one of the most promising target for these studies. We present a comprehensive spectral analysis of the six XMM-Newton observations of the source (for a total of ~200 ks), focusing on the detailed and systematic search for absorption features in the high-energy data. We detect several absorption features at rest-frame energies ~8-8.5 keV and ~9.7 keV. The lines are consistent with being produced by H-like iron Ka and Kb shell absorptions associated with an outflow with mildly relativistic velocity of ~0.14-0.2 c. The lines are found to be variable in energy and, marginally in intensity, implying that variations in either the column density, geometry and/or ionization structure of the outflow are common in this source., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on partially overlapping XMM-Newton (~260 ks) and Suzaku (~100 ks) observations of the iron K band in the nearby, bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509. The source shows a resolved neutral Fe K line, most probably produced in the outer part of the accretion disc. Moreover, the source shows further emission blue-ward of the 6.4 keV line due to ionized material. This emission is well reproduced by a broad line produced in the accretion disc, while it cannot be easily described by scattering or emission from photo-ionized gas at rest. The summed spectrum of all XMM-Newton observations shows the presence of a narrow absorption line at 7.3 keV produced by highly ionized outflowing material. A spectral variability study of the XMM-Newton data shows an indication for an excess of variability at 6.6-6.7 keV. These variations may be produced in the red wing of the broad ionized line or by variation of a further absorption structure. The Suzaku data indicate that the neutral Fe Kalpha line intensity is consistent with being constant on long timescales (of a few years) and they also confirm as most likely the interpretation of the excess blueshifted emission in terms of a broad ionized Fe line. The average Suzaku spectrum differs from the XMM-Newton one for the disappearance of the 7.3 keV absorption line and around 6.7 keV, where the XMM-Newton data alone suggested variability., Comment: MNRAS in press

It has been suggested that X-ray observations of rapidly variable Seyfert galaxies may hold the key to probe the gas orbital motions in the innermost regions of accretion discs around black holes and, thus, trace flow patterns under the effect of the hole strong gravitational field. We explore this possibility analizing XMM-Newton observations of the seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. A detiled time-resolved spectral analysis is performed down to the shortest possible time-scales (few ks) using "excess maps" and cross-correlating light curves in different energy bands. In addition to a constant core of the Fe K alpha line, we detected a variable and redshifted Fe K alpha emission feature between 5.3-6.1 keV. The line exhibits a modulation on a time-scale of 27 ks that is similar to and in phase with a modulation of the 0.3-10 keV source continuum. The time-scale of the correlated variability of the redshifted Fe line and continuum agrees with the local dynamical time-scale of the accretion disc at 10 r_g around a black hole of 10^7 M_sun. Given the shape of the redshfted line emission and the overall X-ray variability pattern, the line is likely to arise from the relativistic region near the black hole., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We investigate the relation between the X-ray nuclear emission, optical emission line, radio luminosity and black hole mass for a sample of nearby Seyfert galaxies. Strong linear correlations between the 2-10 keV and [OIII], radio luminosities have been found, showing the same slopes found in quasars and luminous Seyfert galaxies, thus implying independence from the level of nuclear activity displayed by the sources. Moreover, despite the wide range of Eddington ratios (L/L(Edd)) tested here (six orders of magnitude, from 0.1 down to 10^(-7), no correlation is found between the X-ray, optical emission lines, radio luminosities and the black hole mass. We report results from the XMM-Newton observation of IRAS 13197-1627, a luminous IR galaxy with a Seyfert 1.8 nucleus. The hard X-ray spectrum is steep and is absorbed by Compton-thin neutral gas. We detect an Fe emission line at 6.4 keV, consistent with transmission through the absorber. The most striking result of our spectral analysis is the detection of a dominant X-ray reflection component and broad Fe line from the inner accretion disc. The reflection-dominated hard X-ray spectrum is confirmed by the strong Compton hump seen in a previous BeppoSAX observation and could be the sign that most of the primary X-rays are radiated from a compact corona (or e.g. base of the jet) within a few gravitational radii from the black hole. We also detect a relatively strong absorption line at 6.81 keV which, if interpreted as Fe xxv resonant absorption intrinsic to the source, implies an outflow with velocity of about 5000 km/s. In the soft energy band, the high-resolution RGS and the CCD-resolution data show the presence of both photo-ionized gas and thermal plasma emission, the latter being most likely associated with a recent starburst of 15-20 solar masses per year., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of X-ray spectral varability made on a sample of 7 Seyfert 1 bright galaxies, using XMM-Newton data. From the "XMM-Newton Science Archive" we selected those bright Seyfert 1 showing one or more prominent flares in their 2-10 keV light curves. For each of them we extracted spectra in 3 different time intervals: before, during and after the flare. We fitted them with a simple power law and then shifted a narrow emission and absorption line template across the 2.5-10 keV data, in order to investigate the presence of line-like features with a confidence level greater than 99%. Some highly significant features were detected in 3 out of 7 sources studied. In particular, the 3 sources, namely PG 1211+143, NGC 4051 and NGC 3783, showed the presence of a variable emission feature in the 4.5-5.8 keV band, characterized by an increase of its intensity after the flare peak. We report the XMM-Newton detection of a moderately bright X-ray source superimposed on the outer arms of the inactive spiral galaxy MCG-03-34-63 (z=0.0213). It is clearly offset from the nucleus (by about 19'') but well within the D25 ellipse of the galaxy, just along its bar axis. The field has also been observed with the HST enabling us to compute a lower limit of > 94 on the X-ray to optical flux ratio which, together with the X-ray spectrum of the source, argues against a background AGN. On the other hand, the detection of excess X-ray absorption and the lack of a bright optical counterpart argue against foreground contamination. Short-timescale variability is observed, ruling out the hypothesis of a particularly powerful supernova. If it is associated with the apparent host galaxy, the source is the most powerful ULX detected so far with a peak luminosity of 1.35x10^41 erg/s in the 0.5-7 keV band. If confirmed by future multi-wavelength observations, the inferred bolometric luminosity (about 3x10^41 erg/s) requires a rather extreme beaming factor (larger than 115) to accommodate accretion onto a stellar-mass black hole of 20 solar masses and the source could represent instead one of the best intermediate-mass black hole candidate so far. We investigate the relation between X-ray nuclear emission, optical emission line luminosities and black hole masses for a sample of 47 Seyfert galaxies. The sample, which has been selected from the Palomar optical spectroscopic survey of nearby galaxies (Ho, Filippenko & Sargent 1997), covers a wide range of nuclear powers, from L_{2-10 keV} ~ 10^{43} erg/s down to very low luminosities (L_{2-10 keV} ~ 10^{38} erg/s). Best available data from Chandra, XMM-Newton and, in a few cases, ASCA observations have been considered. Thanks to the good spatial resolution available from these observations and a proper modeling of the various spectral components, it has been possible to obtain accurate nuclear X-ray luminosities not contaminated by off-nuclear sources and/or diffuse emission. X-ray luminosities have then been corrected taking into account the likely candidate Compton thick sources, which are a high fraction (> 30%) among type 2 Seyferts in our sample. The main result of this study is that we confirm strong linear correlations between 2-10 keV, [OIII]\lambda5007, H_{alpha} luminosities which show the same slope as quasars and luminous Seyfert galaxies, independent of the level of nuclear activity displayed. Moreover, despite the wide range of Eddington ratios (L/L_{Edd}) tested here (six orders of magnitude, from 0.1 down to ~ 10^{-7}), no correlation is found between the X-ray or optical emission line luminosities and the black hole mass. Notwithstanding the big efforts devoted to the investigation of the mechanisms responsible for the high-energy (E>100 MeV) gamma-ray emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN), the definite answer is still missing. The X-ray energy band (0.4-10 keV) is crucial for this type of study, since both synchrotron and inverse Compton emission can contribute to the formation of the continuum. Within an ongoing project aimed at the investigation of the gamma-ray emission mechanism acting in the AGN detected by the EGRET telescope onboard CGRO, we firstly focused on the sources for which X-ray and optical/UV data are available in the XMM-Newton public archive. Results obtained from an X-ray spectral survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using XMM--Newton are reported. The sample was optically selected, well defined, complete in B mag, and distance limited: it consists of the nearest (D<22 Mpc) 27 Seyfert galaxies (9 of type 1, 18 of type 2) taken from the Ho et al. (1997) sample. This is one of the largest atlases of hard X-ray spectra of low-L active galaxies ever assembled. All nuclear sources except two Sey 2s are detected between 2-10 keV, half for the first time ever, and average spectra are obtained for all of them. Nuclear luminosities reach values down to 10**38 erg/s. The shape of the distribution of X-ray parameters is affected by the presence of Compton-thick objects (> 30% among type 2s). The latter have been identified either directly from their intense FeK line and flat X-ray spectra, or indirectly with flux diagnostic diagrams which use isotropic indicators. After taking into account these highly absorbed sources, we find that (i) the intrinsic X-ray spectral properties (i.e., spectral shapes and luminosities above 2 keV) are consistent between type 1 and type 2 Sey, as expected from ``unified models'', (ii) Sey galaxies as a whole are distributed fairly continuously over the entire range of Nh, between 10**20 and 10**25 cm**-2, and (iii) while Sey 1s tend to have lower Nh and Sey 2s tend to have the highest, we find 30% and 10% exceptions, respectively. Overall the sample well represents the average intrinsic X-ray spectral properties of nearby AGN, including a proper estimate of the distribution of their absorbing columns. Evidence for both red- and blue-shifted absorption lines due to ionized Fe in the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 are reported. These features appear to be transient on time-scales as short as ~20 ks, and have been observed with two different satellites, BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton. The red- and blue-shifted lines are found at E~5.5 keV and ~8.1-8.3 keV (rest-frame), respectively. The first is seen in one out of six BeppoSAX observations, the latter is seen by both satellites. Under the assumption that the absorption is due to either H- or He-like Iron, the implied velocities for the absorbing matter are v~0.15-0.2 c, in both outward and inward directions. An alternative explanation in terms of gravitational red-shift for the ~5.5 keV line cannot be ruled out with the current data. We argue, however, that the temporal patterns and sporadic nature of the lines are more easily reconciled with models which predict important radial motions close to the central black hole, such as the ``aborted jet'' model, the ``thundercloud'' model, or magneto-hydrodynamical models of jets and accretion-disks., Comment: 9 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

One of the least biased complete Seyfert sample available to date has been considered to perform an X-ray survey using the capabilities of XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites. The X-ray nuclear luminosities obtained have been used to perform a multi-wavelength analysis as a powerfull tool in the identification of heavily obscured objects. The new X-ray data, together with highest quality nuclear fluxes available from the radio to the optical band, allow us to obtain nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for type 1 and type 2 objects in our sample. The blank field fluctuations, i.e. the most sensitive measurements to date of the X-ray cosmic variance on this scale, indicate (1 sigma) variations within ~15-25% around the average value. The first marginal evidence that these overdensities increase with cluster redshift is also presented. We speculate that the most likely explanation is that the sources in excess are AGNs tracing filaments connected to the clusters. The Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) contains 150 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, most of them previously unknown. We present here the study of the X-ray emission from two of these active galaxies (SDSS J030639.57+000343.2 and SDSS J141519.50-003021.6), based upon XMM-Newton observations. The spectral and timing characteristics of the two sources are presented and compared against the typical properties of known NLS1 galaxies. We found that these two NLS1 are within the dispersion range of the typical values of this class of AGN, although with some interesting features that deserve further studies., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures. An enigmatic, small class of IR and X-ray luminous sources, named ``Composite'' starburst/Seyfert galaxies, has been defined from IRAS and RASS data. The objects have optical spectra dominated by the features of HII galaxies (plus, in some cases, weak Seyfert signatures) but X-ray luminosities higher than expected from starbursts and more typical of Seyfert nuclei. The true nature of this class of objects is still unknown. We present Chandra data of four of these galaxies that were obtained to investigate the nature of the X-ray source. Timing analysis of a ~95 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 is presented. Model-independent tools have been used with the intent of resolving the different components that produce the observed flux and spectral variations down to timescales as short as ~300 s. We find that the fractional variability is possibly due to a variable power law component in the hard band, and a slower thermal component at softer energies, but the data do not rule out effects due to the warm absorber. The most relevant result of this work is the first detection of a significant enhancement of the fractional variability in the ~4.7-5.8 keV energy band compared to the underlying continuum. This represents one of the strongest, model-independent, pieces of evidence to date for the presence of redshifted relativistic matter accreting into the black hole. During the brightest flare of the observation, a soft-to-hard time lag of ~600 s is measured. A very significant increase of the iron line intensity is observed ~3000 s after this flare. In the framework of a disk-corona model and assuming the soft-to-hard time lag is due to Comptonization, these findings make it possible to estimate the electron density and the dimensions of the flare region and the disk-flare distance., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present observations with XMM-Newton of M33 X-8, the ultraluminous X-ray source (L_{0.5-10 keV} ~ 2x10^39 erg/s) closest to the centre of the galaxy. The best-fit model is similar to the typical model of Galactic black holes in very high state. Comparison with previous observations indicates that the source is still in a very high state after about 20 years of observations. No state transition has been observed even during the present set of XMM-Newton observations. We estimate the lower limit of the mass of the black hole >6 M_sun, but with proper parameters taking into account different effects, the best estimate becomes 12 M_sun. Our analysis favours the hypothesis that M33 X-8 is a stellar mass black hole candidate, in agreement with the findings of other authors. In addition, we propose a different model where the high luminosity of the source is likely to be due to orientation effects of the accretion disc and anisotropies in the Comptonized emission., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We report on the spectral properties of a sample of 90 hard X-ray selected serendipitous sources detected in 12 XMM observations with 1~1.55 over the whole sample. We also find that the mean slope of the QSOs in our sample turns out to remain nearly constant (~1.8-1.9) between 0~10^(22) cm^(-2)) is ~30%, with little evolution in the range 2

We present preliminary results of the spectral analysis of a large sample of Seyfert galaxies observed by BeppoSAX. The only selection criterium was a sufficiently large S/N ratio (>10) in the PDS band (12-200 keV) to allow good detection up to the highest energy. The resulting sample is composed of 28 objects (17 Seyfert 1, 11 Seyfert 2) and 50 observations. Our main effort here is to adopt Comptonization models to fit the different spectra on a truly broad band basis (0.1-200 keV). We use two distinct disc-corona configurations, an anisotropic slab and an isotropic spherical one. We discuss the distributions of the physical parameters, like temperature and optical depth of the corona and the reflection component, among this sample. The observation of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS13349+2438 performed by XMM-Newton European Photon Imaging Camera between 0.3-10 keV, is presented here. The broadband spectrum of the source is dominated at low energies (E < 2 keV) by a strong excess of emission and by complex emission/absorption features between 5.5-8.0 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum is consistent with ionized absorption found by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (Sako et al. (2001)). We focus on the 2-10 keV spectrum which shows clear evidence for a broad, complex FeK alpha line, previously unseen by ASCA, and for an Fe K-shell edge detected at ~7.3-7.4 keV (rest-frame). The presence of this edge could be explained by either partial covering or ionized/relativistic reflection models, with the latter being preferred and with a resulting power law slope of Gamma \~2.2. The line profile is complex, with a broad bump between ~ 5.5-6.5 keV and a narrow emission line at ~ 7 keV, separated by a sharp drop at ~ 6.8 keV. This profile is compatible with two possible scenarios: i) a broad, ionized and gravitationally redshifted Laor diskline plus a narrow and ionized emission line; ii) a broad, ionized and single Schwarzschild (double-peaked) diskline with a superimposed narrow absorption line., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Recent BeppoSAX observations of Arp 299, a powerful far-IR merging starburst system composed of IC 694 and NGC 3690, clearly unveiled for the first time in this system the presence of a strongly absorbed active galactic nucleus (AGN). However the system was not spatially resolved by BeppoSAX. Here we present the analysis of archival Chandra and (for the first time) XMM-Newton observations, which allow us to disentangle the X-ray emission of the two galaxies. The detection of a strong 6.4 keV line in NGC 3690 clearly demonstrates the existence of an AGN in this galaxy, while the presence of a strong 6.7 keV Fe-Kalpha line in the spectrum of IC 694 suggests that also this nucleus might harbor an AGN. We report on the identification of the optical and infrared counterparts of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) XMMU J121214.5+131248 (NGC4168-ULX1). The optical spectrum yields a redshift of z=0.217, which implies that the ULX is not associated with the nearby galaxy NGC 4168, but rather with a background object. Optical spectral line ratios and the spectral energy distribution constructed from the available data indicate that the source is likely a starburst nucleus., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication on A&A Letters

The nature of the ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) is still to be understood. Several hypotheses have been suggested to explain the high X-ray luminosity: stellar mass black holes with emission collimated by relativistic effects or anisotropies in the accretion disk, intermediate mass black holes, young supernovae remnants, background active galactic nuclei. To discriminate among the above hypotheses, the search for relativistic effects can be a valuable "pathfinder". We present the results obtained with BeppoSAX observations of the three Composite Seyfert/star-forming galaxies: IRAS 20051-1117, IRAS 04392-0123 and IRAS 01072+4954. These sources belong to an enigmatic class of X-ray sources detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (Moran et al. 1996) which is composed of 6 low redshift galaxies. Their optical spectra are dominated by the features of HII galaxies while their X-ray luminosities (< 10^{42} ergs/s) are typical of Seyfert galaxies. IRAS 20051-1117 shows a 2-10 keV spectrum well described by a power-law with photon index = 1.9 and low intrinsic absorption. This result, the ratio Flux(2-10 keV)/Flux([OIII]) and the significant X-ray variability detected, clearly rule out a Compton thick nature of this source. IRAS 04392-0123 and IRAS 01072+4954, instead, have a BeppoSAX flux a factor of ~ 50-80 smaller than in the previous ROSAT observations, resulting in poor statistics, that prevents detailed modeling., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Using a long (=150 ksec), broad-band (0.1--40 keV) BeppoSAX observation of the merging starburst system Arp 299 (=IC 694 + NGC 3690) we found the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of a deeply buried (N_H = 2.5E24 cm-2) AGN having an intrinsic luminosity of L(0.5-100 keV) = 1.9E43 cgs. We report the identification of the optical and radio counterparts of the ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source XMMU J124825.9+083020 (NGC4698-ULX1). The optical spectrum taken with the VLT yields a redshift of z=0.43, which implies that the ULX is not associated with the nearby galaxy NGC4698. The spectral energy distribution calculated from the available data indicates that the source is likely to be a BL Lac object. The possible synchrotron peak at X-ray energies suggests that this source may be a gamma-ray emitter., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

The XMM-Newton data presented here are the first X-ray observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4138. Although the galaxy has been pointed by ROSAT-HRI, it was not detected, with a flux upper limit of about 1.1x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1 in the 0.2-2.4 keV energy band. XMM-Newton performed the observation on 26 November 2001. The source is detected for the first time in X-rays with F[0.2-2.4]=1.0x10^-13 erg cm^-2 s^-1, in agreement with the upper limit of ROSAT. The source spectrum is typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find heavy obscuration (N_H about 8x10^22 cm^-2) and a flat photon index (1.6). The source intrinsic luminosity is about 5x10^41 erg/s in the 0.5-10 keV energy band., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. An XMM-Newton study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULX) has been performed in a sample of 10 nearby Seyfert galaxies. Eighteen ULX have been found with positional uncertainty of about 4". The large collecting area of XMM-Newton makes the statistics sufficient to perform spectral fitting with simple models in 8 cases. The main results of the present minisurvey strengthen the theory that the ULX could be accreting black holes in hard or soft state. In some cases, the contribution of the ULX to the overall X-ray flux appears to be dominant with respect to that of the active nucleus. In addition, 6 ULX present probable counterparts at other wavelengths (optical/infrared, radio). The XMM-Newton observatory has the largest collecting area flown so far for an X-ray imaging system, resulting in a very high sensitivity over a broad spectral range. In order to exploit fully these performances, a very accurate calibration of the XMM-Newton instruments is required, and has led to an extensive ground and flight calibration program. We present preliminary results from a study with XMM-Newton of the galactic serendipitous sources in a sample of 28 nearby Seyfert galaxies (with D < 22 Mpc). We concentrate here on a subset of four galaxies, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, and NGC4565. In these galaxies we found six ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (B<12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (Delta > 0 deg.) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the ``typical'' Seyfert X-ray spectrum (e.g. the distribution of their absorption column density) in the local Universe. This is crucial to verify the predictions and, thus, to validate unified models, and is a fundamental parameter of synthesis models for the X-ray background. A companion poster (paper II: L. In the present work we report the BeppoSAX observation of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 526A in the band 0.1-150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The combined analysis of all Narrow Field Instruments provides a power law spectral index of ~ 1.6 and confirms the flat spectral nature of this source. Although NGC 526A varies strongly in the 2-10 keV over period of months/years, its spectral shape remains constant over these timescales. An Fe K-alpha line, characterized by a complex structure, has been detected in the 6-7 keV range. The line, which has an equivalent width of 120 eV, is not compatible with being produced in an absorbing torus with N_H ~ 10^22 cm^-2, but most likely originates by reflection in an accretion disk viewed at an intermediate inclination angle of ~ 42 deg. The reflection component is however small (R < 0.7) and so it is not sufficient to steepen the spectrum to photon index values more typical of AGNs. Instead, we find that the data are more consistent with a flat power law spectrum cut-off at around 100 keV plus a small reflection component which could explain the observed iron line. Thus NGC 526A is the only bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxy which maintains a "flat spectrum" even when broad band data are considered: in this sense its properties, with respect to the general class of Seyfert 2's, are analogous to those of NGC 4151 with respect to the vast majority of Seyfert 1's., Comment: 8 pages, 6 PostScript figures, Latex manuscript, new A&A file style included, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 7172 was observed twice by BeppoSAX narrow field instruments approximately one year apart. As found in previous observations, the source is variable on short time scales (hours) by a factor of $\sim$30%, confirming the presence of a type 1 nucleus at the center. A strong flux variability (by a factor of 2) on a longer time scale was observed between the two observations. Indeed, in November 1997, the lowest flux ever recorded was detected by BeppoSAX. The broad band spectra obtained with the BeppoSAX narrow field instruments show marginal evidence of a reflection component. This structure could explain the very flat spectra previously observed in the 2-10 keV band. An FeK$\alpha$ line was also detected in both observations. The line intensity appears to remain almost constant between the two observations even if the associated large errors cannot exclude some variability. In order to understand the problem of the origin of the line, data from previous observations, performed with other satellites, were also used. The scenario favored is one where the line is produced at a distance of approximatively 8 light years from the continuum source region, rather than having its origin in the accretion disk. We report on the first deep X-ray survey with the XMM-Newton observatory during the performance verification phase. The field of the Lockman Hole, one of the best studied sky areas over a very wide range of wavelengths, has been observed. A total of ~100 ksec good exposure time has been accumulated. Combining the images of the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) detectors we reach a flux limit of 0.31, 1.4 and 2.4 X 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, respectively in the 0.5-2, 2-10, and 5-10 keV band. Within an off-axis angle of 10 arcmin we detect 148, 112 and 61 sources, respectively. The log(N)-log(S) relation in the three bands is compared with previous results. In particular in the 5-10 keV band these observations present the deepest X-ray survey ever, about a factor 20 more sensitive than the previous BeppoSAX observations. Using X-ray spectral diagnostics and the set of previously known, spectroscopically identified ROSAT sources in the field, the new sources can be classified. XMM-Newton detects a significant number (~40%) of X-ray sources with hard, probably intrinsically absorbed X-ray spectra, confirming a prediction of the population synthesis models for the X-ray background., Comment: 6 pages, based on the new A&A style file (included), to be published in A&A 365 (2001, special XMM issue), one page contains color images

We present XMM-Newton observations of the bright quasar PKS0558-504. The 0.2-10 keV spectrum is dominated by a large, variable soft X-ray excess. The fastest flux variations imply accretion onto a Kerr black hole. The XMM-Newton data suggest the presence of a `big blue bump' in PKS0558-504 extending from the optical band to ~3 keV. The soft X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for significant absorption or emission-line features. The most likely explanation for the hot big blue bump is Comptonization by the multi-temperature corona of a thermal accretion disc running at a high accretion rate., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A special issue on first results from XMM

IC 4329A is the brightest known Seyfert galaxy in hard (~2-30 keV) X-rays and is likely to be representative of Seyfert 1 galaxies as a class. A recent 100 ks BeppoSAX observation (Perola et al. 1999) clearly confirmed the presence of a warm absorber, a reflection component (R~0.6), and a high-energy cut-off in the power law at Ec~270 keV. Its richness in spectral features, combined with its large flux (~1.6 x 10**-10 erg/cm2s between 2-10 keV), make this target ideal for multiple observations (in particular with BeppoSAX) to search for spectral variations. Results obtained from 3 follow-up observations (40 ks each) are presented here. The first and most important goal of this study was to probe the origin of the Compton reflection component observed in Seyfert galaxies by monitoring the variability of the reflection continuum and FeK line in response to primary continuum variations. The second goal was to search for variability in the high energy cutoff. We obtain however no conclusive results on any of these issues. In fact, all four observations unfortunately caught the source at almost the same flux, showing only little, and marginal, spectral changes between different observations., Comment: 2 pages, LateX. We report the transition to an active state of the nucleus in the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 2992, discovered by means of new hard X-ray data. While the 2-10 keV flux declined by a factor of ~ 20 from 1978 to 1994, two recent BeppoSAX observations in 1997 and in 1998 caught the nuclear emission raising back to the same level of activity observed in 1978. In both BeppoSAX observations the X-ray spectrum of the source is well represented by a power law with spectral index Gamma ~ 1.7, absorbed by a column density of N_H ~ 10^{22} cm^{-2} and characterized by a prominent iron K\alpha line. While in the second BeppoSAX data set the line properties appear to be consistent with those expected from accretion disc models, in the first BeppoSAX data set the iron feature is rather peculiar. The broadening is not significant and the line energy is E_{K\alpha}=6.62 +/- 0.07 keV, indicating emission from highly ionized iron. The line has too high equivalent width (~ 700 eV) to be produced by a hot scattering medium. By comparing these data with data previously in the literature, we interpret the spectral and flux changes in terms of different phases of rebuilding an accretion disc. The timescale for the disc rebuilding is estimated to range between 1 and 5 years. The X-ray data are complemented with optical and near-infrared followup spectra taken 1.5 months after the discovery of the X-ray burst. The spectra are characterized by prominent broad emission lines. There is also evidence for hot dust emission in the H and K bands that, however, is probably still in the process of increasing., Comment: 15 LaTeX pages including 9 postscript figures. A new BeppoSAX broad-band (0.6-150 keV) spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mkn 3 is presented. The spectrum provides a direct measurement of a large, neutral column of gas with Nh~10**24 cm**-2 in the source direction. The source, as bright as 3C 273 above 10 keV, has a steep (Gamma~1.8) spectrum without any evidence of a high-energy cutoff up to at least 150 keV. At lower energies, the data are best modeled with the addition of an unabsorbed reflection component. Combining these data with previous Ginga and ASCA observations, the Fe K$_{\alpha}$ and reflection continuum indicate that the reprocessed emission is responding slower than the intrinsic continuum variations suggesting a size of the reprocessor >= 2 pc. Identifying such a reprocessor with a (close to edge-on) obscuring torus, the overall result fits well into unified models since, presumably, one can interpret the strong absorption as due to transmission through the rim of the torus and the unabsorbed (directly viewed) reflection component as due to reprocessing from the torus inner surface., Comment: 12 LateX pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 has been observed with BeppoSAX between 0.5 and 150 keV. The high energy instrument onboard, PDS, has succeeded in measuring for the first time the spectrum of this source in the 13-150 keV range. The PDS spectrum, having a photon index Gamma~1.86 is fully compatible with that expected from a Seyfert 1 nucleus. In the framework of unified models, the harder (Gamma~1.67) 2-10 keV spectrum is well explained assuming the presence of a complex partial + total absorber (Nh~30x10^22 cm^-2 x25% + Nh~4x10^22 cm^-2 x100%). The high column density of this complex absorber is consistent both with the FeK_alpha line strength and with the detection of an absorption edge at E~7.1 keV in the power-law spectrum., Comment: A&A Letters accepted, 5 pages

We present and discuss a "3-dimensional" diagnostic diagram for Seyfert2 galaxies obtained by means of X-ray and [OIII] data on a large sample of objects (reported in the Appendix). The diagram shows the Kalpha iron line equivalent width as a function of both the column density derived from the photoelectric cutoff and the 2-10 keV flux normalized to the [OIII] optical line flux (the latter corrected for extinction and assumed to be a true indicator of the source intrinsic luminosity). We find that the hard X-ray properties of type 2 objects depend on a single parameter, the absorbing column density along the line of sight,in accordance with the unified model. The diagram can be used to identify Compton thick sources and to isolate and study peculiar objects. From this analysis we have obtained a column density distribution of Seyfert 2 galaxies which is thought to be a good approximation of the real distribution. A large population of heavily absorbed objects is discovered, including many Compton thick candidates. Our results indicate that the mean Log Nh/cm^(-2)in type 2 Seyferts is 23.5 and that as much as 23-30% of sources have Nh > 10^24 cm^(-2)., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures, to be published in ApJ Supp

We report broad band (0.1-200 keV) X-ray observations, made by BeppoSAX, of a sample of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies: NGC7172, NGC2110, NGC4507, Mkn 3 and NGC7674. These spectra provide a better understanding of the effects of X-ray reprocessing by cold material in the source and allow to put tighter constraints on the various spectral parameters involved. In particular, the data are used to determine, with less ambiguities than in the past, the shape of the intrinsic continuum emission by means of the high energy data. We present observations in the 0.1-100 keV spectral band of 8 Seyfert 2 galaxies, obtained by means of BeppoSAX. These sources were selected according to their [OIII] optical emission line flux, to avoid biases against obscuration on the pc scale. All sources were detected. All of them are weak X-ray emitters, and most of them are characterized by prominent iron lines at 6.4-7 keV (EW > 500 eV) and by a flat continuum, indicative of heavy obscuration along our line of sight (N_H > 10^25 cm^-2 in most cases). These results 1) provide further evidence in favor of the unified scenario, and 2) indicate that the average obscuration of type 2 AGNs is very likely much higher than deduced by former X-ray surveys.
