Search

An inclusive search is presented for long-lived particles using displaced jets. The search uses a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2017 and 2018, from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The results of this search are combined with those of a previous search using a data sample collected with the CMS detector in 2016, yielding a total integrated luminosity of 132 fb(-1). The analysis searches for the distinctive topology of displaced tracks and displaced vertices associated with a dijet system. For a simplified model, where pair-produced long-lived neutral particles decay into quark-antiquark pairs, pair production cross sections larger than 0.07 fb are excluded at 95% confidence level (C.L.) for long-lived particle masses larger than 500 GeV and mean proper decay lengths between 2 and 250 mm. For a model where the standard model-like Higgs boson decays to two long-lived scalar particles that each decays to a quark-antiquark pair, branching fractions larger than 1% are excluded at 95% C.L. for mean proper decay lengths between 1 mm and 340 mm. A group of supersymmetric models with pair-produced long-lived gluinos or top squarks decaying into various final-state topologies containing displaced jets is also tested. Gluino masses up to 2500 GeV and top squark masses up to 1600 GeV are excluded at 95% C.L. for mean proper decay lengths between 3 and 300 mm. The highest lower bounds on mass reach 2600 GeV for long-lived gluinos and 1800 GeV for long-lived top squarks. These are the most stringent limits to date on these models.

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. We consider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge -1/3e coupling to a top quark plus a tau lepton (t tau) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino (b nu), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling to t nu or b tau. These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in the measurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures t tau nu b and t tau nu are probed, using data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at root s = 13 TeV and that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. The data are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidence level are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98-1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling lambda to a lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. Results of the Model Unspecific Search in CMS (MUSiC), using proton–proton collision data recorded at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1, are presented. The MUSiC analysis searches for anomalies that could be signatures of physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is based on the comparison of observed data with the standard model prediction, as determined from simulation, in several hundred final states and multiple kinematic distributions. Events containing at least one electron or muon are classified based on their final state topology, and an automated search algorithm surveys the observed data for deviations from the prediction. The sensitivity of the search is validated using multiple methods. No significant deviations from the predictions have been observed. For a wide range of final state topologies, agreement is found between the data and the standard model simulation. This analysis complements dedicated search analyses by significantly expanding the range of final states covered using a model independent approach with the largest data set to date to probe phase space regions beyond the reach of previous general searches.

A measurement of the Higgs boson Yukawa coupling to the top quark is presented using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1), recorded with the CMS detector. The coupling strength with respect to the standard model value, Y-t, is determined from kinematic distributions in t (t) over bar final states containing ee, mu mu, or e mu pairs. Variations of the Yukawa coupling strength lead to modified distributions for t (t) over bar production. In particular, the distributions of the t (t) over bar mass of the a system and the rapidity difference of the top quark and antiquark are sensitive to the value of Y-t. The measurement yields a best fit value of Y-t = 1.16(-0.35)(+0.24), bounding Y-t < 1.54 at a 95% confidence level.

The first direct, model-independent measurement is presented of the modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements vertical bar V-tb vertical bar, vertical bar V-td vertical bar, and vertical bar V-ts vertical bar, in final states enriched in single top quark t-channel events. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data from the LHC, collected during 2016 by the CMS experiment, at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Processes directly sensitive to these matrix elements are considered at both the production and decay vertices of the top quark. In the standard model hypothesis of CKM unitarity, a lower limit of vertical bar V-tb vertical bar > 0.970 is measured at the 95% confidence level. Several theories beyond the standard model are considered, and by releasing all constraints among the involved parameters, the values vertical bar V-tb vertical bar = 0.988 +/- 0.024, and vertical bar V-td vertical bar(2) + vertical bar V-ts vertical bar(2) = 0.06 +/- 0.06, where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic components, are measured. The running of the top quark mass is experimentally investigated for the first time. The mass of the top quark in the modified minimal subtraction ((MS) over bar) renormalization scheme is extracted from a comparison of the differential top quark-antiquark (t (t) over bar) cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the t (t) over bar system to next-to-leading-order theoretical predictions. The differential cross section is determined at the parton level by means of a maximum-likelihood fit to distributions of final-state observables. The analysis is performed using t (t) over bar candidate events in the e(+/-)mu(-/+) channel in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The extracted running is found to be compatible with the scale dependence predicted by the corresponding renormalization group equation. A study of excited Lambda(0)(b) baryons is reported, based on a data sample collected in 2016-2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 140fb(-1). The existence of four excited Lambda(0)(b) states: Lambda(0)(b) (5912)(0), Lambda(0)(b) (5920)(0), Lambda(0)(b) (6146)(0), and Lambda(0)(b) (6152)(0) in the Lambda(0)(b)pi(+)pi(-) mass spectrum is confirmed, and their masses are measured. The Lambda(0)(b)pi(+)pi(-) mass distribution exhibits a broad excess of events in the region of 6040-6100 MeV, whose origin cannot be discerned with the present data. (C) 2020 The Author(s). A measurement of the W+W- boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV is presented. The data used in this study are collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The W+W- candidate events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons). Two methods for reducing background contributions are employed. In the first one, a sequence of requirements on kinematic quantities is applied allowing a measurement of the total production cross section, 117.6 +/- 6.8 pb, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction. Fiducial cross sections are also reported for events with zero or one jet, and the change in the zero-jet fiducial cross section with the jet transverse momentum threshold is measured. Normalized differential cross sections are reported within the fiducial region. A second method for suppressing background contributions employs two random forest classifiers. The analysis based on this method includes a measurement of the total production cross section and also a measurement of the normalized jet multiplicity distribution in W+W- events. Finally, a dilepton invariant mass distribution is used to probe for physics beyond the standard model in the context of an effective field theory, and constraints on the presence of dimension-6 operators are derived.

This paper reports on a search for an extension to the scalar sector of the standard model, where a new CP-even (odd) boson decays to a Z boson and a lighter CP-odd (even) boson, and the latter further decays to a b quark pair. The Z boson is reconstructed via its decays to electron or muon pairs. The analysed data were recorded in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Data and predictions from the standard model are in agreement within the uncertainties. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section times branching fraction, with masses of the new bosons up to 1000 GeV. The results are interpreted in the context of the two-Higgs-doublet model.

A search for a narrow resonance with a mass between 350 and 700 GeV, and decaying into a pair of jets, is performed using proton-proton collision events containing at least three jets. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.3 fb(-1) recorded at root s = 13 TeV with the CMS detector. Data are collected with a technique known as "data scouting", in which the events are reconstructed, selected, and recorded at a high rate in a compact form by the high-level trigger. The three-jet final state provides sensitivity to lower resonance masses than in previous searches using the data scouting technique. The spectrum of the dijet invariant mass, calculated from the two jets with the largest transverse momenta in the event, is used to search for a resonance. No significant excess over a smoothly falling background is found. Limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross section of a narrow dijet resonance and compared with the cross section of a vector dark matter mediator coupling to dark matter particles and quarks. Translating to a model where the narrow resonance interacts only with quarks, upper limits on this coupling range between 0.10 and 0.15, depending on the resonance mass. These results represent the most stringent upper limits in the mass range between 350 and 450 GeV obtained with a flavor-inclusive dijet resonance search. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Normalised multi-differential cross sections for top quark pair (t (t) over bar) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The analysed data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The doubledifferential t (t) over bar cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the top quark and of the t (t) over bar system at parton level in the full phase space. A triple-differential measurement is performed as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the t (t) over bar system and the multiplicity of additional jets at particle level. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement next-to-leading-order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations with parton showers. Together with a fixed-order NLO QCD calculation, the triple-differential measurement is used to extract values of the strong coupling strength alpha(S) and the top quark pole mass (m(t)(pole)) using several sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). The measurement of m(t)(pole) exploits the sensitivity of the t (t) over bar invariant mass distribution to m(t)(pole) near the production threshold. Further-more, a simultaneous fit of the PDFs, aS, and m(t)(pole) is performed at NLO, demonstrating that the new data have significant impact on the gluon PDF, and at the same time allow an accurate determination of alpha(S) and m(t)(pole). The values alpha S(mZ) = 0.1135+0.0021-0.0017 and m(t)(pole) = 170.5 +/- 0.8GeV are extracted, which account for experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the latter being estimated from NLO scale variations. Possible effects from Coulomb and soft-gluon resummation near the t (t) over bar production threshold are neglected in these parameter extractions. A rough estimate of these effects indicates an expected correction of m(t)(pole) of the order of +1 GeV, which can be regarded as additional theoretical uncertainty in the current m(t)(pole) extraction.

Anisotropies in the initial energy density distribution of the quark-gluon plasma created in high energy heavy ion collisions lead to anisotropies in the azimuthal distributions of the final-state particles known as collective anisotropic flow. Fourier harmonic decomposition is used to quantify these anisotropies. The higher-order harmonics can be induced by the same order anisotropies (linear response) or by the combined influence of several lower order anisotropies (nonlinear response) in the initial state. The mixed highe-rorder anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles are measured as functions of transverse momentum and centrality in PbPb collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies root s(NN) = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector. The results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations using several different initial conditions, aswell asmicroscopic transport model calculations. None of the models provides a simultaneous description of the mixed higher-order flow harmonics and nonlinear response coefficients.

A measurement is reported of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks produced in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The measurement is performed in the lepton þ jets channel of tt events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay t → bW → bqq¯0 are reconstructed as a single jet with transverse momentum larger than 400 GeV. The t¯t cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded at the particle level and used to extract a value of the top quark mass of 172.6 ± 2.5 GeV. A novel jet reconstruction technique is used for the first time at the LHC, which improves the precision by a factor of 3 relative to an earlier measurement. This highlights the potential of measurements using boosted top quarks, where the new technique will enable future precision measurements.

Two related searches for phenomena beyond the standard model (BSM) are performed using events with hadronic jets and significant transverse momentum imbalance. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137fb-1. The first search is inclusive, based on signal regions defined by the hadronic energy in the event, the jet multiplicity, the number of jets identified as originating from bottom quarks, and the value of the kinematic variable MT2 for events with at least two jets. For events with exactly one jet, the transverse momentum of the jet is used instead. The second search looks in addition for disappearing tracks produced by BSM long-lived charged particles that decay within the volume of the tracking detector. No excess event yield is observed above the predicted standard model background. This is used to constrain a range of BSM models that predict the following: the pair production of gluinos and squarks in the context of supersymmetry models conserving R-parity, with or without intermediate long-lived charginos produced in the decay chain; the resonant production of a colored scalar state decaying to a massive Dirac fermion and a quark; or the pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks each decaying to a neutrino and a top, bottom, or light-flavor quark. In most of the cases, the results obtained are the most stringent constraints to date.

A search is described for the production of a pair of bottom-type vectorlike quarks (VLQs), each decaying into a b or (b) over bar quark and either a Higgs or a Z boson, with a mass greater than 1000 GeV. The analysis is based on data from proton-proton collisions at a 13 TeV center-of-mass energy recorded at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). As the predominant decay modes of the Higgs and Z bosons are to a pair of quarks, the analysis focuses on final states consisting of jets resulting from the six quarks produced in the events. Since the two jets produced in the decay of a highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs or Z boson can merge to form a single jet, nine independent analyses are performed, categorized by the number of observed jets and the reconstructed event mode. No signal in excess of the expected background is observed. Lower limits are set on the VLQ mass at 95% confidence level equal to 1570 GeV in the case where the VLQ decays exclusively to a b quark and a Higgs boson, 1390 GeV for when it decays exclusively to a b quark and a Z boson, and 1450 GeV for when it decays equally in these two modes. These limits represent significant improvements over the previously published VLQ limits.

The fiducial cross section for Y(1S) pair production in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeVin the region where both Y(1S) mesons have an absolute rapidity below 2.0 is measured to be 79 +/- 11 (stat) +/- 6 (syst) +/- 3 (B) pbassuming the mesons are produced unpolarized. The last uncertainty corresponds to the uncertainty in the Y(1S) meson dimuon branching fraction. The measurement is performed in the final state with four muons using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). This process serves as a standard model reference in a search for narrow resonances decaying to Y(1S)mu(+)mu(-) in the same final state. Such a resonance could indicate the existence of a tetraquark that is a bound state of two bquarks and two (b) over bar antiquarks. The tetraquark search is performed for masses in the vicinity of four times the bottom quark mass, between 17.5 and 19.5 GeV, while a generic search for other resonances is performed for masses between 16.5 and 27 GeV. No significant excess of events compatible with a narrow resonance is observed in the data. Limits on the production cross section times branching fraction to four muons via an intermediate Y(1S) resonance are set as a function of the resonance mass. (C) 2020 The Author(s). The ratios of the B-c (2S)(+) to B-c(+), B-c(*)(2S)(+) to B-c(+), and Bc(2S)(+) to Bco2STHORNthorn production cross sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 143 fb(-1). The three measurements are made in the Bthornc meson phase space region defined by the transverse momentum p(T) > 15 GeV and absolute rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.4, with the excited B-c((+)) (2S)(+) states reconstructed through the B-(c)(+) p thornp-, followed by the Bthornc. J=.pthorn and J=.. mu thorn mu- decays. The Bc o2STHORNthorn to Bthornc, B-c(+) (2S)(+) to Bthornc, and B-c((+)) (2S)(+) to B-c((+)) (2S)(+) cross section ratios, including the unknown B-c(+) (2S)(+). Bc ->((+)) pthorn p- branching fractions, are o3.47 +/- 0.63(stat) +/- 0.33o(syst))%, (4.69 +/- 0.71)(stat)(+) +/- 0.56(syst))%, and 1.35 +/- 0.32((stat)) +/- 0.09((syst)), respectively. None of these ratios shows a significant dependence on the pT or jyj of the B-c(+) meson. The normalized dipion invariant mass distributions from the decays B-c((*))(2S)+ -> B-c((*))pi(+)pi(-) are also reported.

A search is conducted for a low-mass charged Higgs boson produced in a top quark decay and subsequently decaying into a charm and a strange quark. The data sample was recorded in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search is performed in the process of top quark pair production, where one top quark decays to a bottom quark and a charged Higgs boson and the other to a bottom quark and a W boson. With the W boson decaying to a charged lepton (electron or muon) and a neutrino, the final state comprises an isolated lepton, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets, of which two are tagged as b jets. To enhance the search sensitivity, one of the jets originating from the charged Higgs boson is required to satisfy a charm tagging selection. No significant excess beyond standard model predictions is found in the dijet invariant mass distribution. An upper limit in the range 1.68%-0.25% is set on the branching fraction of the top quark decay to the charged Higgs boson and bottom quark for a charged Higgs boson mass between 80 and 160 GeV.

A measurement is reported of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks produced in pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of t (t) over bar events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay t -> bW -> bq (q) over bar' are reconstructed as a single jet with transverse momentum larger than 400 GeV. The t (t) over bar cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded at the particle level and used to extract a value of the top quark mass of 172.6 +/- 2.5 GeV. A novel jet reconstruction technique is used for the first time at the LHC, which improves the precision by a factor of 3 relative to an earlier measurement. This highlights the potential of measurements using boosted top quarks, where the new technique will enable future precision measurements.

The differential cross section and charge asymmetry for inclusive W boson production at root s = 13 TeV is measured for the two transverse polarization states as a function of the W boson absolute rapidity. The measurement uses events in which a W boson decays to a neutrino and either a muon or an electron. The data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The differential cross section and its value normalized to the total inclusive W boson production cross section are measured over the rapidity range vertical bar y(w)vertical bar < 2.5. In addition to the total fiducial cross section, the W boson double-differential cross section, d(2)sigma/dp(T)(l)d vertical bar eta(l)vertical bar, and the charge asymmetry are measured as functions of the charged lepton transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The precision of these measurements is used to constrain the parton distribution functions of the proton using the next-to-leading order NNPDF3.0 set.

A search for the production of a narrow-width resonance decaying into a pair of Higgs bosons decaying into the bbZZ channel is presented. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector during 2016, in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The final states considered are the ones where one of the Z bosons decays into a pair of muons or electrons, and the other Z boson decays to either a pair of quarks or a pair of neutrinos. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the production of narrow-width spin-0 or spin-2 particles decaying to a pair of Higgs bosons, in models with and without an extended Higgs sector. For a resonance mass range between 260 and 1000 GeV, limits on the production cross section times branching fraction of a spin-0 and spin-2 resonance range from 0.1 to 5.0 pb and 0.1 to 3.6 pb, respectively. These results set limits in parameter space in bulk Randall-Sundrum radion, Kaluza-Klein excitation of the graviton, and next-to-minimal two-Higgs doublet models (N2HDMs). For specific choices of parameters the N2HDM can be excluded in a mass range between 360 and 620 GeV for a resonance decaying to two Higgs bosons. This is the first search for Higgs boson resonant pair production in the bbZZ channel.

Results are reported for the B 0s ! + branching fraction and effective lifetime and from a search for the decay B0 ! + . The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions accumulated by the CMS experiment in 2011, 2012, and 2016, with center-of-mass energies (integrated luminosities) of 7TeV (5 fb), 8TeV (20 fb), and 13TeV (36 fb). The branching fractions are determined by measuring event yields relative to B+ ! J= K+ decays (with J= ! + ), which results in the reduction of many of the systematic uncertainties. The decay B 0s ! + is observed with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be B (B 0s ! + ) = [2:9 0:7(exp) 0:2(frag)] 10, where the first uncertainty combines the experimental statistical and systematic contributions, and the second is due to the uncertainty in the ratio of the B 0s and the B+ fragmentation functions. No significant excess is observed for the decay B0 ! + , and an upper limit of B(B0 ! + ) < 3:6 10 is obtained at 95% confidence level. The B 0s ! + effective lifetime is measured to be + = 1:70 +0:61 ps. These results are consistent with standard model predictions.

The transverse energy (ET gamma) spectra of photons isolated from other particles are measured using proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at the LHC at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV with integrated luminosities of 27.4 pb(-1) and 404 mu b(-1) for pp and PbPb data, respectively. The results are presented for photons with 25 < E-T(gamma)< 200 GeV in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.44, and for different centrality intervals for PbPb collisions. Photon production in PbPb collisions is consistent with that in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, demonstrating that photons do not interact with the quark-gluon plasma. Therefore, isolated photons can provide information about the initial energy of the associated parton in photon+jet measurements. The results are compared with predictions from the next-to-leading-order jetphox generator for different parton distribution functions (PDFs) and nuclear PDFs (nPDFs). The comparisons can help to constrain the nPDFs global fits.

The dependence of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV on the distance parameter R of the anti-kT algorithm is studied using data corresponding to integrated luminosities up to 35.9 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment in 2016. The ratios of the inclusive cross sections as functions of transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, for R in the range 0.1 to 1.2 to those using R = 0.4 are presented in the region 84 < pT< 1588 GeV and |y|< 2.0. The results are compared to calculations at leading and next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant using different parton shower models. The variation of the ratio of cross sections with R is well described by calculations including a parton shower model, but not by a leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculation including nonperturbative effects. The agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions for the ratios of cross sections is significantly improved when next-to-leading order calculations with nonperturbative effects are used.

The first observation of the (tt) over barH process in a single Higgs boson decay channel with the full reconstruction of the final state (H -> gamma gamma) is presented, with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations (sigma). The CP structure of Higgs boson couplings to fermions is measured, resulting in an exclusion of the pure CP-odd structure of the top Yukawa coupling at 3.2 sigma. The measurements are based on a sample of protonproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The cross section times branching fraction of the (tt) over barH process is measured to be sigma B-(tt) over barH(gamma gamma) = 1.56(-0.32)(+0.34) th, which is compatible with the standard model prediction of 1.13(-0.11)(+0.08) fb. The fractional contribution of the CP-odd component is measured to be f(CP)(Hu) = 0.00 +/- 0.33.

Measurements of production cross sections of WZ and same-sign WW boson pairs in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV at the LHC are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector during 2016-2018. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes W(+/-)Z -> l(+/-)nu l'(+/-)l'(-/+) and (WW +/-)-W-+/- -> l(+/-)nu l'(+/-)nu, where l, l' = e, mu. Differential fiducial cross sections as functions of the invariant masses of the jet and charged lepton pairs, as well as of the leading-lepton transverse momentum, are measured for (WW +/-)-W-+/- production and are consistent with the standard model predictions. The dependence of differential cross sections on the invariant mass of the jet pair is also measured for WZ production. An observation of electroweak production of WZ boson pairs is reported with an observed (expected) significance of 6.8 (5.3) standard deviations. A measurement of the production cross section of top quark pairs in association with two b jets (t (t) over barb (b) over bar) is presented using data collected in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The cross section is measured in the all-jet decay channel of the top quark pair by selecting events containing at least eight jets, of which at least two are identified as originating from the hadronization of b quarks. A combination of multivariate analysis techniques is used to reduce the large background from multijet events not containing a top quark pair, and to help discriminate between jets originating from top quark decays and other additional jets. The cross section is determined for the total phase space to be 5.5 +/- 0.3 (stat)(-1.3)(+)(1.6) (syst)pb and also measured for two fiducial t (t) over barb (b) over bar, definitions. Central exclusive and semiexclusive production of pi(+)pi(-) pairs is measured with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV. The theoretical description of these non-perturbative processes, which have not yet been measured in detail at the LHC, poses a significant challenge to models. The two pions are measured and identified in the CMS silicon tracker based on specific energy loss, whereas the absence of other particles is ensured by calorimeter information. The total and differential cross sections of exclusive and semiexclusive central pi(+)pi(-) production are measured as functions of invariant mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity of the pi(+)pi(-) system in the fiducial region defined as transverse momentum p(T)(p) > 0.2GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta(p)vertical bar < 2.4. The production cross sections for the four resonant channels f(0)(500), rho(0) (770), f(0)(980), and f(2)(1270) are extracted using a simple model. These results represent the first measurement of this process at the LHC collision energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV.

A search is presented for pairs of light pseudoscalar bosons, in the mass range from 4 to 15 GeV, produced from decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson. The decay modes considered are final states that arise when one of the pseudoscalars decays to a pair of tau leptons, and the other one either into a pair of tau leptons or muons. The search is based on proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The 2 mu 2 tau and 4 tau channels are used in combination to constrain the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and the branching fraction into 4 tau final state, sigma beta, exploiting the linear dependence of the fermionic coupling strength of pseudoscalar bosons on the fermion mass. No significant excess is observed beyond the expectation from the standard model. The observed and expected upper limits at 95% confidence level on sigma beta, relative to the standard model Higgs boson production cross section, are set respectively between 0.022 and 0.23 and between 0.027 and 0.19 in the mass range probed by the analysis. The first observation is reported of the combined production of three massive gauge bosons (VVV with V = W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analysis is based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The searches for individualWWW, WWZ, WZZ, and ZZZ production are performed in final states with three, four, five, and six leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-sign leptons plus one or two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the combinedVVV production signal is 5.7 (5.9) standard deviations and the corresponding measured cross section relative to the standard model prediction is 1.02(-0.23)(+0.26). The significances of the individual WWW and WWZ production are 3.3 and 3.4 standard deviations, respectively. Measured production cross sections for the individual triboson processes are also reported.

The transverse momentum (P-T) spectra of inclusively produced A c P baryons are measured via the exclusive decay channel Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+) using the CMS detector at the LHC. Spectra are measured as a function of transverse momentum in proton-proton (pp) and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a nucleonnucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02TeV. The measurement is performed within the Lambda(+)(c) rapidity interval vertical bar Y vertical bar < 1 in the p(T) range of 5-20GeV/c in pp and 10-20GeV/c in PbPb collisions. The observed yields of Lambda(+)(c) for p(T) of 10-20 GeV/c suggest a suppression in central PbPb collisions compared to pp collisions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The Lambda(+)(c)/D-0 production ratio in pp collisions is compared to theoretical models. In PbPb collisions, this ratio is consistent with the result from pp collisions in their common p-r range. Ratios of cross sections, sigma(Z + c jets)/sigma(Z + jets), sigma(Z + b jets)/sigma(Z + jets), and sigma(Z + c jets)/sigma(Z + b jets) in the associated production of a Z boson with at least one charm or bottom quark jet are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The data sample, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), with a fiducial volume of p(T) > 30 GeV and vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4 for the jets, where p(T) and eta represent transverse momentum and pseudorapidity, respectively. The Z boson candidates come from leptonic decays into electrons or muons with p(r) > 25 GeV and vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4, and the dilepton mass satisfies 71 < m(z) < 111 GeV. The measured values are sigma(Z + c jets)/sigma(Z + jets) = 0.102 +/- 0.002 +/- 0.009, sigma(Z + b jets)/6(Z + jets) = 0.0633 +/- 0.0004 +/- 0.0015, and sigma(Z + c jets)/sigma(Z + b jets) = 1.62 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.15. Results on the inclusive and differential cross section ratios as functions of jet and Z boson transverse momentum are compared with predictions from leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. These arc the first measurements of the cross section ratios at 13 TeV.

The polarizations of promptly produced chi(c1) and chi(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV. The chi(c) states are reconstructed via their radiative decays chi(c) -> J/psi gamma, with the photons being measured through conversions to e(+)e(-), which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the chi(c2) to chi(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-) decay, in three bins of J/psi transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the hclicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum.

Measurements of the cross section for the production of top quark pairs in association with a pair of jets from bottom quarks (sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar)) and in association with a pair of jets from quarks of any flavor or gluons (sigma(t (t) over bar jj)) and their ratio are presented. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The measurements are performed in a fiducial phase space and extrapolated to the full phase space, separately for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, where lepton corresponds to either an electron or a muon. The results of the measurements in the fiducial phase space for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, respectively, are sigma(t (t) over bar jj) = 2.36 +/- 0.02 (stat)+/- 0.20 (syst) pb and 31.0 +/- 0.2 (stat)+/- 2.9 (syst) pb, and for the cross section ratio 0.017 +/- 0.001 (stat)+/- 0.001 (syst) and 0.020 +/- 0.001 (stat)+/- 0.001 (syst). The values of sigma(t (t) over barb (b) over bar) are determined from the product of the sigma(t (t) over bar jj) and the cross section ratio, obtaining, respectively, 0.040 +/- 0.002 (stat)+/- 0.005 (syst) pb and 0.62 +/- 0.03 (stat)+/- 0.07 (syst) pb. These measurements are the most precise to date and are consistent, within the uncertainties, with the standard model expectations obtained using a matrix element calculation at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics matched to a parton shower.

Using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, the B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi decay is observed. Decays into J/psi pi(+)pi(-) and K+K- are used to reconstruct, respectively, the X(3872) and phi. The ratio of the product of branching fractions B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]B[X(3872) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)] to the product B[B-s(0) ->psi(2S)phi]B[psi(2S) -> J/psi pi(+)pi(-)] is measured to be [2.21 +/- 0.29(stat) +/- 0.17(syst)]%. The ratio B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]/B[B-0 -> X(3872)K-0] is found to be consistent with one, while the ratio B[B-s(0) -> X(3872)phi]/B[B+-> X(3872)K+] is two times smaller. This suggests a difference in the production dynamics of the X(3872) in B-0 and B(0)s meson decays compared to B+. The reported observation may shed new light on the nature of the X(3872) particle.

A search forWWproduction from double-parton scattering processes using same-charge electron-muon and dimuon events is reported, based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb-1, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. Multivariate classifiers are used to discriminate between the signal and the dominant background processes. A maximum likelihood fit is performed to extract the signal cross section. This leads to the first evidence for WW production via double-parton scattering, with a significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The measured inclusive cross section is 1.41 +/- 0.28 (stat) +/- 0.28 (syst) pb.

Results are reported from a search for new physics beyond the standard model in proton-proton collisions in final states with a single lepton; multiple jets, including at least one jet tagged as originating from the hadronization of a bottom quark; and large missing transverse momentum. The search uses a sample of proton-proton collision data at root s =13 TeV, corresponding to 137 fb(-1), recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The signal region is divided into categories characterized by the total number of jets, the number of bottom quark jets, the missing transverse momentum, and the sum of masses of large-radius jets. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with estimates of standard model backgrounds based on event yields in the control regions. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry involving gluino pair production in which each gluino decays into a top quark-antiquark pair and a stable, unobserved neutralino, which generates missing transverse momentum in the event. Scenarios with gluino masses up to about 2150 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level (or more) for neutralino masses up to 700 GeV. The highest excluded neutralino mass is about 1250 GeV, which holds for gluino masses around 1850 GeV.

The first search for supersymmetry in events with an experimental signature of one soft, hadronically decaying tau lepton, one energetic jet from initial-state radiation, and large transverse momentum imbalance is presented. These event signatures are consistent with direct or indirect production of scalar tau leptons ((tau) over tilde) in supersymmetric models that exhibit coannihilation between the (tau) over tilde and the lightest neutralino ((chi) over tilde (0)(1)), and that could generate the observed relic density of dark matter. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. The results are interpreted in a supersymmetric scenario with a small mass difference (Delta m) between the chargino ((chi) over tilde (+/-)(1)) or next-to-lightest neutralino ((chi) over tilde (0)(2)), and the (chi) over tilde (0)(1). The mass of the (tau) over tilde is assumed to be the average of the (chi) over tilde (1)(+/-) and (chi) over tilde (0)(1) masses. The data are consistent with standard model background predictions. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the sum of the (chi) over tilde (+/-)(1). (chi) over tilde (0)(2), and (tau) over tilde production cross sections for Delta m ((chi) over tilde (+/-)(1),(chi) over tilde (0)(1)) = 50 GeV, resulting in a lower limit of 290 GeVon the mass of the (chi) over tilde (+/-)(1), which is the most stringent to date and surpasses the bounds from the LEP experiments.

A search is presented for long-lived charged particles that decay within the volume of the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment. Such particles can produce events with an isolated track that is missing hits in the outermost layers of the silicon tracker, and is also associated with little energy deposited in the calorimeters and no hits in the muon detectors. The search for events with this "disappearing track" signature is performed in a sample of proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1) recorded in 2017 and 2018. The observation of 48 events is consistent with the estimated background of 47.8(-2.3)(+2.7) (stat) +/- 8.1 (syst) events. Upper limits are set on chargino production in the context of an anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model for purely wino and higgsino neutralino scenarios. At 95% confidence level, the first constraint is placed on chargino masses in the higgsino case, excluding below 750 (175)GeV for a lifetime of 3 (0.05)ns. In the wino case, the results of this search are combined with a previous CMS search to produce a result representing the complete LHC data set recorded in 2015-2018, the most stringent constraints to date. A search is presented for a narrow resonance decaying to a pair of oppositely charged muons using root s = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded at the LHC. In the 45-75 and 110-200 GeV resonance mass ranges, the search is based on conventional triggering and event reconstruction techniques. In the 11.5-45 GeV mass range, the search uses data collected with dimuon triggers with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by storing a reduced amount of trigger-level information. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 137 and 96.6 fb(-1) for conventional and high-rate triggering, respectively. No significant resonant peaks are observed in the probed mass ranges. The search sets the most stringent constraints to date on a dark photon in the similar to 30-75 and 110-200 GeV mass ranges.

A search is performed for neutral non-standard-model Higgs bosons decaying to two muons in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). Proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV were used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search is sensitive to neutral Higgs bosons produced via the gluon fusion process or in association with a b (b) over bar quark pair. No significant deviations from the standard model expectation are observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in the context of the m(h)(mod+) and phenomenological MSSM scenarios on the parameter tan beta as a function of the mass of the pseudoscalar A boson, in the range from 130 to 600 GeV. The results are also used to set a model-independent limit on the product of the branching fraction for the decay into a muon pair and the cross section for the production of a scalar neutral boson, either via gluon fusion, or in association with b quarks, in the mass range from 130 to 1000 GeV. A search for long-lived particles decaying to photons and weakly interacting particles, using protonproton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2017 is presented. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb(-1). Results are interpreted in the context of supersymmetry with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the neutralino is long-lived and decays to a photon and a gravitino. Limits are presented as a function of the neutralino proper decay length and mass. For neutralino proper decay lengths of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m, masses up to 320, 525, 360, and 215 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. We extend the previous best limits in the neutralino proper decay length by up to one order of magnitude, and in the neutralino mass by up to 100 GeV.

A search for a light charged Higgs boson (H+) decaying to a W boson and a CP-odd Higgs boson (A) in final states with e mu mu or mu mu mu is performed using data from pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). In this search, it is assumed that the H+ boson is produced in decays of top quarks, and the A boson decays to two oppositely charged muons. The presence of signals for H+ boson masses between 100 and 160 GeV and A boson masses between 15 and 75 GeV is investigated. No evidence for the production of the H+ boson is found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are obtained on the combined branching fraction for the decay chain, t -> bH(+) -> bW(+)A -> bW(+)mu(+)mu(-), of 1.9 x 10(-6) to 8.6 x 10(-6), depending on the masses of the H+ and A bosons. These are the first limits for these decay modes of the H+ and A bosons.

A search for long-lived particles decaying to displaced, nonprompt jets and missing transverse momentum is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016-2018. Candidate signal events containing nonprompt jets are identified using the timing capabilities of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter. The results of the search are consistent with the background prediction and are interpreted using a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking reference model with a gluino next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. In this model, gluino masses up to 2100, 2500, and 1900 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for proper decay lengths of 0.3, 1, and 100 m, respectively. A search for the production of events containing three W bosons predicted by the standard model is reported. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search is performed in final states with three leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-charge leptons plus two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the signal for (WWW -/+)-W-+/--W-+/- production is 0.60 (1.78) standard deviations, and the ratio of the measured signal yield to that expected from the standard model is 0.34(-0.34)(+0.62) . Limits are placed on three anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production of massive axionlike particles.

A study of the B+-> J/psi = 8 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb(-1), is presented. The ratio of branching fractions B+-> J/psi B+-> J/psi K is measured to be (1.054 +/- 0.057(stat) +/- 0.035(syst) +/- 0.011 where the last uncertainty reflects the uncertainties in the world-average branching fractions of and K*(892) (+) decays to reconstructed final states. The invariant mass distributions of the J/psi, J/psi systems produced in the B+-> J/psi decay are investigated and found to be inconsistent with the pure phase space hypothesis. The analysis is extended by using a model-independent angular amplitude analysis, which shows that the observed invariant mass distributions are consistent with the contributions from excited kaons decaying to the (Lambda) over barp system.

A search for decays of the Higgs and Z boson to pairs of J/ψor Y(nS)(n =1, 2, 3) mesons, with their subsequent decay to μ+μ−pairs, is presented. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2017 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37.5 fb−1. While an observation of such a decay with this sample would indicate the presence of physics beyond the standard model, no significant excess is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the branching fractions of these decays. In the J/ψpair channel, the limits are 1.8 ×10−3and 2.2 ×10−6for the Higgs and Z boson, respectively, while in the combined Y(nS)pair channel, the limits are 1.4 ×10−3and 1.5 ×10−6, respectively, when the mesons from the Higgs and Z boson decay are assumed to be unpolarized. When fully longitudinal and transverse polarizations are considered the limits reduce by about 22–29% and increase by about 10–13%, respectively.©2019 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V. This paper presents the combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at = 7 and 8 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 to 5.1 fb(-1) at = 7 TeV and 12.2 to 20.3 fb(-1) at = 8 TeV. These combinations are performed per centre-of-mass energy and for each production mode: t-channel, tW, and s-channel. The combined t-channel cross-sections are 67.5 +/- 5.7 pb and 87.7 +/- 5.8 pb at = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. The combined tW cross-sections are 16.3 +/- 4.1 pb and 23.1 +/- 3.6 pb at = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. For the s-channel cross-section, the combination yields 4.9 +/- 1.4 pb at = 8 TeV. The square of the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V-tb multiplied by a form factor f(LV) is determined for each production mode and centre-of-mass energy, using the ratio of the measured cross-section to its theoretical prediction. It is assumed that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation |V-td|, |V-ts| << |V-tb|. All the |f(LV)V(tb)|(2) determinations, extracted from individual ratios at = 7 and 8 TeV, are combined, resulting in |f(LV)V(tb)| = 1.02 +/- 0.04 (meas.) +/- 0.02 (theo.). All combined measurements are consistent with their corresponding Standard Model predictions.

A study of the B +→ J / ψ Λ ¯ p decay using proton-proton collision data collected at s = 8 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb−1, is presented. The ratio of branching fractions B(B+→J/ψΛ¯p)/B(B+→J/ψK∗(892)+) is measured to be (1.054 ± 0.057(stat) ± 0.035(syst) ± 0.011(B))%, where the last uncertainty reflects the uncertainties in the world-average branching fractions of Λ ¯ and K*(892) + decays to reconstructed final states. The invariant mass distributions of the J / ψ Λ ¯ , J/ψp, and Λ ¯ p systems produced in the B +→ J / ψ Λ¯ p decay are investigated and found to be inconsistent with the pure phase space hypothesis. The analysis is extended by using a model-independent angular amplitude analysis, which shows that the observed invariant mass distributions are consistent with the contributions from excited kaons decaying to the Λ ¯ p system. Measurements of the top quark polarization and top quark pair (t¯t) spin correlations are presented using events containing two oppositely charged leptons (eþe−, eμ∓, or μþμ−) produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. A set of parton-level normalized differential cross sections, sensitive to each of the independent coefficients of the spin-dependent parts of the t¯t production density matrix, is measured for the first time at 13 TeV. The measured distributions and extracted coefficients are compared with standard model predictions from simulations at next-to-leadingorder (NLO) accuracy in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and from NLO QCD calculations including electroweak corrections.
