In information technology devices, current-driven state switching is crucial in various disciplines including spintronics, where the contribution of heating to the switching mechanism plays an inevitable role. Recently, current-driven antiferromagnetic order switching has attracted considerable attention due to its implications for next-generation spintronic devices. Although the switching mechanisms can be explained by spin dynamics induced by spin torques, some reports have claimed that demagnetization above the Neel temperature due to Joule heating is critical for switching. Here we present a systematic method and an analytical model to quantify the thermal contribution due to Joule heating in micro-electronic devices, focusing on current-driven octupole switching in the non-collinear antiferromagnet, Mn3Sn. The results consistently show that the critical temperature for switching remains relatively constant above the Neel temperature, while the threshold current density depends on the choice of substrate and the base temperature. In addition, we provide an analytical model to calculate the Joule-heating temperature which quantitatively explains our experimental results. From numerical calculations, we illustrate the reconfiguration of magnetic orders during cooling from a demagnetized state of polycrystalline Mn3Sn. Electrical readout of magnetic states is a key to realize novel spintronics devices for efficient computing and data storage. Unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) in bilayer systems, consisting of a spin source material and a magnetic layer, refers to a change in the longitudinal resistance upon the reversal of magnetization, which typically originates from the interaction of spin-current and magnetization at the interface. Because of UMR s linear dependence on applied charge current and magnetization, it can be used to electrically read the magnetization state. However, in conventional spin source materials, the spin polarization of an electric field induced spin current is restricted to be in the film plane and hence the ensuing UMR can only respond to the in plane component of the magnetization. On the other hand, magnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are highly desired for magnetic memory and spin-logic devices, while the electrical read out of PMA magnets through UMR is critically missing. Here, we report the discovery of an unconventional UMR in bilayer heterostructures of a topological semimetal (WTe2) and a PMA ferromagnetic insulator (Cr2Ge2Te6, CGT), which allows to electrically read the up and down magnetic states of the CGT layer by measuring the longitudinal resistance. Our theoretical calculations based on a tight binding model show that the unconventional UMR originates from the interplay of crystal symmetry breaking in WTe2 and magnetic exchange interaction across the WTe2 and CGT interface. Combining with the ability of WTe2 to obtain magnetic field free switching of the PMA magnets, our discoveries open an exciting pathway to achieve two terminal magnetic memory devices that operate solely on the spin orbit torque and UMR, which is critical for developing next-generation non volatile and low power consumption data storage technologies.

Many aspects of human learning have been proposed as a process of constructing mental programs: from acquiring symbolic number representations to intuitive theories about the world. In parallel, there is a long-tradition of using information processing to model human cognition through Rate Distortion Theory (RDT). Yet, it is still poorly understood how to apply RDT when mental representations take the form of programs. In this work, we adapt RDT by proposing a three way trade-off among rate (description length), distortion (error), and computational costs (search budget). We use simulations on a melody task to study the implications of this trade-off, and show that constructing a shared program library across tasks provides global benefits. However, this comes at the cost of sensitivity to curricula, which is also characteristic of human learners. Finally, we use methods from partial information decomposition to generate training curricula that induce more effective libraries and better generalization., Comment: CogSci 2024

By using the composition method, we establish the $e$-positivity of spider graphs of the form $S(4m+2,\, 2m,\, 1)$, which was conjectured by Aliniaeifard, Wang and van Willigenburg. We expand chromatic symmetric functions in terms of $e_I$ for compositions $I$. Following the divide-and-conquer strategy, we group one or two $e_J$-terms that have positive coefficients with each $e_I$-term that has a negative coefficient, where the compositions $J$ are selected to be distinct compositions obtained by rearranging the parts of $I$, and show the positivity of the sum of those coefficients., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

Many clinical tasks require an understanding of specialized data, such as medical images and genomics, which is not typically found in general-purpose large multimodal models. Building upon Gemini's multimodal models, we develop several models within the new Med-Gemini family that inherit core capabilities of Gemini and are optimized for medical use via fine-tuning with 2D and 3D radiology, histopathology, ophthalmology, dermatology and genomic data. Med-Gemini-2D sets a new standard for AI-based chest X-ray (CXR) report generation based on expert evaluation, exceeding previous best results across two separate datasets by an absolute margin of 1% and 12%, where 57% and 96% of AI reports on normal cases, and 43% and 65% on abnormal cases, are evaluated as "equivalent or better" than the original radiologists' reports. We demonstrate the first ever large multimodal model-based report generation for 3D computed tomography (CT) volumes using Med-Gemini-3D, with 53% of AI reports considered clinically acceptable, although additional research is needed to meet expert radiologist reporting quality. Beyond report generation, Med-Gemini-2D surpasses the previous best performance in CXR visual question answering (VQA) and performs well in CXR classification and radiology VQA, exceeding SoTA or baselines on 17 of 20 tasks. In histopathology, ophthalmology, and dermatology image classification, Med-Gemini-2D surpasses baselines across 18 out of 20 tasks and approaches task-specific model performance. Beyond imaging, Med-Gemini-Polygenic outperforms the standard linear polygenic risk score-based approach for disease risk prediction and generalizes to genetically correlated diseases for which it has never been trained. Although further development and evaluation are necessary in the safety-critical medical domain, our results highlight the potential of Med-Gemini across a wide range of medical tasks.

We establish the $e$-positivity of cycle-chord graphs by using the composition method which is developed by Zhou and the author recently. Our method is simpler than the $(e)$-positivity approach which is used for handling cycle-chords with girth at most $4$. We propose to measure the weak decay constant $\alpha_-$ for the decay $\Lambda\rightarrow p\pi^-$ using a both circularly and linearly polarized photon beam with the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D. The measurement will take advantage of the fact that a measurement with both linear and circular photon beam polarization results in an over-constrained set of amplitudes which can be fitted to data and used to extract $\alpha_-$ which will be left as a free parameter in the fit. We expect to determine $\alpha_-$ with statistical uncertainties comparable to existing measurements and independent systematic uncertainties. This measurement can be performed alongside GlueX-II running and requires no new hardware or new beam time. Excellence in a wide variety of medical applications poses considerable challenges for AI, requiring advanced reasoning, access to up-to-date medical knowledge and understanding of complex multimodal data. Gemini models, with strong general capabilities in multimodal and long-context reasoning, offer exciting possibilities in medicine. Building on these core strengths of Gemini, we introduce Med-Gemini, a family of highly capable multimodal models that are specialized in medicine with the ability to seamlessly use web search, and that can be efficiently tailored to novel modalities using custom encoders. We evaluate Med-Gemini on 14 medical benchmarks, establishing new state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on 10 of them, and surpass the GPT-4 model family on every benchmark where a direct comparison is viable, often by a wide margin. On the popular MedQA (USMLE) benchmark, our best-performing Med-Gemini model achieves SoTA performance of 91.1% accuracy, using a novel uncertainty-guided search strategy. On 7 multimodal benchmarks including NEJM Image Challenges and MMMU (health & medicine), Med-Gemini improves over GPT-4V by an average relative margin of 44.5%. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Med-Gemini's long-context capabilities through SoTA performance on a needle-in-a-haystack retrieval task from long de-identified health records and medical video question answering, surpassing prior bespoke methods using only in-context learning. Finally, Med-Gemini's performance suggests real-world utility by surpassing human experts on tasks such as medical text summarization, alongside demonstrations of promising potential for multimodal medical dialogue, medical research and education. Taken together, our results offer compelling evidence for Med-Gemini's potential, although further rigorous evaluation will be crucial before real-world deployment in this safety-critical domain.

Active matter taps into external energy sources to power its own processes. Systems of passive particles ordinarily lack this capacity, but can become active if the constituent particles interact with each other nonreciprocally. By reformulating the theory of classical wave-matter interactions, we demonstrate that interactions mediated by scattered waves generally are not constrained by Newton's third law. The resulting center-of-mass forces propel clusters of scatterers, enabling them to extract energy from the wave and rendering them active. This form of activity is an emergent property of the scatterers' state of organization and can arise in any system where mobile objects scatter waves. Emergent activity flips the script on conventional active matter whose nonreciprocity emerges from its activity, and not the other way around. We combine theory, experiment and simulation to illustrate how emergent activity arises in wave-matter composite systems and to explore the phenomenology of emergent activity in experimentally accessible models. These preliminary studies suggest that heterogeneity is a singular perturbation to the dynamics of wave-matter composite systems, and induces emergent activity under all but the most limited circumstances.

We present the results from the first two years of the Planet Hunters NGTS citizen science project, which searches for transiting planet candidates in data from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) by enlisting the help of members of the general public. Over 8,000 registered volunteers reviewed 138,198 light curves from the NGTS Public Data Releases 1 and 2. We utilize a user weighting scheme to combine the classifications of multiple users to identify the most promising planet candidates not initially discovered by the NGTS team. We highlight the five most interesting planet candidates detected through this search, which are all candidate short-period giant planets. This includes the TIC-165227846 system that, if confirmed, would be the lowest-mass star to host a close-in giant planet. We assess the detection efficiency of the project by determining the number of confirmed planets from the NASA Exoplanet Archive and TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) successfully recovered by this search and find that 74% of confirmed planets and 63% of TOIs detected by NGTS are recovered by the Planet Hunters NGTS project. The identification of new planet candidates shows that the citizen science approach can provide a complementary method to the detection of exoplanets with ground-based surveys such as NGTS., Comment: 42 pages, 20 figures, 17 tables. Thermometry based on magnetic resonance has been extensively studied due to its important application in biomedical imaging. In our previous work, we showed that the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in water is a highly sensitive thermometer as T2 scales with the highly temperature-sensitive self-diffusion constant of water. In this work, in addition to temperature dependent self-diffusion constant of a fluid, we utilize the temperature dependent magnetization of 4 nm SPIONs to improve T2 sensitivity (4.96) by 1.4 times over self-diffusion (3.48) alone in hexane between 248 K and 333 K. To extend the application of NMR T2 thermometry to engineering systems, we also investigate the temperature dependence of T2 in mineral oil (Thermo Scientific, J62592), which exhibits remarkably high sensitivity (11.62) between 273 K and 353 K. This result implies that applications of NMR T2 thermometry in heat transfer fluids are promising. NMR thermometry, however, is generally not applicable to solids. Therefore, we also evaluate the potential of electron spin resonance (ESR) thermometry with SPIONs in solids between 100 K and 290 K, for potential temperature monitoring in biomedical and engineering applications. The size and concentration effects on ESR signals are studied systematically, and our results show that the temperature dependent linewidth follows a T^-2 law for 4 nm SPIONs, while the concentration of SPIONs has no impact on the temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth. The linewidth at room temperature at 9.4 GHz is 10.5 mT. Combining our NMR and ESR results, we find that to obtain higher temperature sensitivity in a magnetic resonance technique using SPIONs, SPION with a small magnetic moment, i.e., a small volume and reduced magnetization, are beneficial., Comment: 45 pages, 16 figures

The concept of a fully interlacing matrix of formal power series with real coefficients is introduced. This concept extends and strengthens that of an interlacing sequence of real-rooted polynomials with nonnegative coefficients, in the special case of row and column matrices. The fully interlacing property is shown to be preserved under matrix products, flips across the reverse diagonal and Veronese sections of the power series involved. These results and their corollaries generalize, unify and simplify several results which have previously appeared in the literature. Given the important role turbulence plays in the settling and growth of dust grains in protoplanetary disks, it is crucial that we determine whether these disks are turbulent and to what extent. Protoplanetary disks are weakly ionized near the mid-plane, which has led to a paradigm in which largely laminar magnetic field structures prevail deeper in the disk, with angular momentum being transported via magnetically launched winds. Yet, there has been little exploration on the precise behavior of the gas within the bulk of the disk. We carry out 3D, local shearing box simulations that include all three low-ionization effects (Ohmic diffusion, ambipolar diffusion, and the Hall effect) to probe the nature of magnetically driven gas dynamics 1-30 AU from the central star. We find that gas turbulence can persist with a generous yet physically motivated ionization prescription (order unity Elsasser numbers). The gas velocity fluctuations range from 0.03-0.09 of the sound speed $c_s$ at the disk mid-plane to $\sim c_s$ near the disk surface, and are dependent on the initial magnetic field strength. However, the turbulent velocities do not appear to be strongly dependent on the field polarity, and thus appear to be insensitive to the Hall effect. The mid-plane turbulence has the potential to drive dust grains to collision velocities exceeding their fragmentation limit, and likely reduces the efficacy of particle clumping in the mid-plane, though it remains to be seen if this level of turbulence persists in disks with lower ionization levels., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

In a collinear antiferromagnet, spins tend to cant towards the direction of an applied magnetic field, thereby decreasing the energy of the system. The canting angle becomes negligible when the magnetic field is small so that the induced anisotropic energy is substantially lower than the exchange energy. However, this tiny anisotropy can play a significant role when the intrinsic anisotropy of the antiferromagnet is small. In our work, we conduct direct imaging of the N\'eel vector in a two-dimensional easy-plane antiferromagnet, MnPSe$_3$, with negligible spin canting under an external in-plane magnetic field. The small inherent in-plane anisotropy allows for the continuous rotation of the N\'eel vector by ramping up the magnetic field in samples from the bulk to the monolayer. In monolayer samples, the applied magnetic field elevates the N\'eel temperature 10$\%$ at 5 tesla, as the combination of intrinsic and field-induced anisotropies set a critical temperature scale for fluctuations of the otherwise disordered N\'eel vector field. Our study illuminates the contribution of field-induced anisotropy in two dimensional magnets with in-plane anisotropy. We also demonstrate that the strain can tune the spin flop transition field strength by one order of magnitude.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of magnetic materials have been widely exploited to characterize magnetic structures and phenomena, however, their temperature dependence is not well understood. This study implements the supercell approach with thermal lattice and magnetic disorders to obtain optical and magneto-optical spectra at finite temperatures based on Williams-Lax theory. Our results show that large optical spectrum signals are generated at photon energies below 1 eV, originating from the phonon- and magnon-assisted intraband transitions as lattice and magnetic temperatures increase. In addition, the prominent peak near 2.7 eV is redshifted proportionally to magnetic temperature but depends much less on lattice temperature. By analyzing unfolded bands, we show that the reduction of exchange splitting due to the thermal demagnetization causes this redshift. Our unfolded electronic band structure with magnetic disorder shows band kinks, which are characteristic evidence of the coupling between electrons and magnetic excitations. First-order magneto-optical spectra at finite temperature are also predicted, but due to their small magnitude suffer more from sampling errors. Access to the neutron orbital degree of freedom has been enabled by the recent actualization of methods to prepare and characterize neutron helical waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) at small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) facilities. This provides new avenues of exploration in fundamental science experiments as well as in material characterization applications. However, it remains a challenge to recover phase profiles from SANS measurements. We introduce and demonstrate a novel neutron interferometry technique for extracting phase information that is typically lost in SANS measurements. An array of reference beams, with complementary structured phase profiles, are put into a coherent superposition with the array of object beams, thereby manifesting the phase information in the far-field intensity profile. We demonstrate this by resolving petal-structure signatures of helical wave interference for the first time: an implementation of the long-sought recovery of phase information from small-angle scattering measurements.

We present a novel immersed boundary method that implements acoustic perturbation theory to model an acoustically levitated droplet. Instead of resolving sound waves numerically, our hybrid method solves acoustic scattering semi-analytically and models the corresponding time-averaged acoustic forces on the droplet. This framework allows the droplet to be simulated on inertial timescales of interest, and thereby admit a much larger time resolution than traditional compressible flow solvers. To benchmark this technique and demonstrate its utility, we implement the hybrid IBM for a single droplet in a standing wave. Simulated droplet shape deformations and streaming profile agree with theoretical predictions. Our simulations also yield new insights on the streaming profiles for elliptical droplets, for which a comprehensive analytic solution does not exist., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

In-line holographic video microscopy records a wealth of information about the microscopic structure and dynamics of colloidal materials. Powerful analytical techniques are available to retrieve that information when the colloidal particles are well-separated. Large assemblies of close-packed particles create holograms that are substantially more challenging to interpret. We demonstrate that Rayleigh-Sommerfeld back-propagation is useful for analyzing holograms of colloidomer chains, close-packed linear assemblies of micrometer-scale emulsion droplets. Colloidomers are fully flexible chains and undergo three-dimensional configurational changes under the combined influence of random thermal forces and hydrodynamic forces. We demonstrate the ability of holographic reconstruction to track these changes as colloidomers sediment through water in a horizontal slit pore. Comparing holographically measured configurational trajectories with predictions of hydrodynamic models both validates the analytical technique for this valuable class of self-organizing materials and also provides insights into the influence of geometric confinement on colloidomer hydrodynamics., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
