The transition to digital design tools challenges the craftsmanship of textile and fashion designers as part of the product value chain, opening for reflection on how textile craftsmanship should be taught in education due to the current trend of digitalisation. By looking at new forms of craftsmanship, this research expands on the idea of teaching students transdisciplinary methods which connect analogue and digital tools within textile and fashion design education. Based on analysis of a number of case studies, we propose a framework of different strategies for teaching textile craftsmanship in the digital design age, with the aim of integrating textile-specific digital environments — which have been designed primarily to maximise the efficiency of industrial processes, rather than to enhance design development with regard to artistic expression — and non-textile digital tools on the basis that these are exploratory in nature and open to more creative design practices.

This chapter examines the perception and treatment of two black American female athletes: basketball player Brittney Griner and tennis player Serena Williams. Described by their competitors, the media, and the public as possessing an unnatural physicality and embodying masculine traits that give them an “unfair advantage,” this discussion considers how their athletic performance/excellence interacts with the presumed obviousness of the intelligibility of their race-sex-gender difference to elicit a “high anxiety” that is expressed as anti-black misogyny, homophobia, and gendered racism. Douglas argues that the contemporary politics of black female embodiment cannot be adequately understood outside of consideration of the histories of slavery and imperialism and the attendant discourses of race, sexuality and gender that were based on the classification of black women as property.

Narrative songs with regards to the theme called ‘murdered sweetheart”, are part of a wider repertoire of murder ballads that circulated in England, Scotland, Ireland, and North America. It is through these Murdered Sweetheart Ballads (cf. Wilgus 1979), that the balladeer informed the listeners about the tragic consequences of non-standard behavior in certain social contexts, such as: pregnancy out of wedlock in patriarchal communities. Murder ballads that contain specific references to facts which occurred in real life (such as the representative case of the assassination of Naomi Wise in Randolph County, back in 1808) passed mainly (through not only) in oral music contexts; despite the transient nature of the singing itself, the meanings behind certain verbal expressions were transmitted and finally preserved in sound recordings released from the early twentieth century onwards. These traditional patterns, that are related to the controversial imagery of women murdered by men and developed in both oral and written traditions, were gradually revised, transposed, and reinterpreted in popular culture by musicians who were engaged within the recording industry as well as filmmakers—each applying their own understanding with regards to this sensitive subject.

This research is based on the urgency of learning media in the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning process, which is also related to instilling simple attitudes in elementary school students. One way to cultivate simple attitudes in students is through the use of learning media in the form of the COOMIS (Islamic Comics) application. COOMIS is designed based on daily life experiences and perceptions of students. It presents three episodes of stories about simple living behavior in daily life, accompanied by animated characters, learning materials, and engaging quiz games. The method used in this research is the Design and Development (D&D) method involving 26 fifth-grade elementary school students and an Islamic Religious Education teacher. The results showed the feasibility and satisfaction of students in using the COOMIS application in the learning process, which was evidenced by the increase in pre-test and post-test results from 82.88 to 90.76 after using the COOMIS learning media, and a teacher questionnaire indicating the feasibility of the material and product aspects by 80%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of learning media based on the COOMIS application developed by the researcher is very effective in the PAI learning process and is also feasible and effective for instilling simple attitudes in elementary school students.

This chapter explores the contemporary politics of black female embodiment in the discursive sites of tennis, and track and field. Because the classification of black women’s bodies has always been inextricable from their location in relation to their humanity, I am interested in how the (hyper)visible arena of sport (re)produces and reinforces public understandings of black female alterity. I contend that the insistent querying of the humanness of black female athletes and their bodies is a feminist issue, because the corporeal integrity and personhood of black women is not simply being questioned, it is being violated. I demonstrate how the development of integrated and complex analyses of discourses of difference and domination is key to the cultivation of any meaningful and liberatory feminist sporting projects.

Researchers have illustrated how this post-Civil Rights period is marked by significant changes to the organization and implementation of systems of racial stratification and expressions of racialized hostility. Consonant with the persistence of racial inequality is the notion that ‘race’ is no longer relevant. In this context, we consider print media accounts of Nancy Lopez's participation in 14 tournaments between June and October 2002. The Lopez Farewell Tour signaled the end of her 26-year career on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour. We suggest that representations of Lopez are linked to new strategies of racialization that strengthen white racial power and privilege. We argue that the popularity of Nancy Lopez, a light-skinned Latina, was not simply evidence of a move towards color-blindness; rather, it was illustrative of the ways in which discourses of whiteness are communicated through their articulation with formations of gender, social class, and heterosexuality. By 2002 Venus and Serena Williams were the top two women players on the women's professional tennis tour. Nevertheless, despite theft spectacular success, there has been a decidedly ambivalent tenor toward theft accomplishments. Applying Raymond Williams' concept of "structures of feeling," this essay considers how dominant cultural meanings and values are taken up and expressed through the atmosphere produced at a sport event. Drawing on the insights offered by critical race scholarship and critical whiteness studies, the following discussion examines the character and significance of the atmosphere produced at two tournaments (Indian Wells, CA, in 2001 and the French Open in 2003) in order to understand how white racial subjectivities are conceived and communicated in daily life. OED and the dictionary of the world defines a "doctor" 700 years ago and today as a "teacher". The root word for the word doctor derives from Latin "docere", which means "to teach". The doctor contributes to educating patients about a number of medical conditions (the patient is experiencing a number of diseases). In essence, the doctor has the role as a teacher. Doctor-patient interaction works on relational models. The physician-trainer paradigm is required to be introduced to improve patient status. The physician-trainer model is a participatory model that results in achieving the patient's well-being and improving his/her health; the physician uses his or her capacity as a trainer, that is, he has the ability to form and instill adequate conduct for each patient. In this paper, besides highlighting the appetence for the relationship between the trainer and the patient, we tried to quantify the patient's acceptance of the treatment with/without continuous monitoring of the disease (chronic diseases), the degree of reasonableness in accepting the therapeutic behavior, and lastly how the individual feels the change of his status in the patient. The study was conducted on a total of 217 subjects (125 female subjects and 92 male subjects). The applied questionnaire contained 18 questions, structured to help us confirm or not the study's objectives. The results obtained will show us the level of appetite for the trainer-patient relationship.

In 2008, Marion Jones was convicted and sentenced to 6 months in a federal prison for lying to federal prosecutors about steroid use and knowledge of a check-cashing scheme. This article explores the Jones scandal and the aftermath in the context of the contemporary cultural politics of Black female bodies and Black womanhood. I examine these events in the era of mass incarceration and a post-9/11 culture. I argue that the fervor and contempt expressed toward Jones are emblematic of a climate where the ideology of color blindness and claims to post-raciality promote and sustain the normalization of humiliation and punishment of Black females.

In this paper, we draw attention to the profound lack of racial diversity as well as the prevalence of whiteness within Canadian faculties of Kinesiology and Physical Education. In support of our argument that there exists an immediate need for equity programming within physical education in higher education, we present the results from two interconnected studies designed to make transparent: (1) the demographic character of faculties of Kinesiology and Physical Education across Canada; as well as (2) the delivery of content related to race, diversity and whiteness within the curriculum. In the first study, we collected website representations of faculty and staff (i.e. photos) as well as lists of curricular offerings for each of the member institutions of the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators. Website documents were downloaded, analyzed and organized according to criteria related to race and diversity. The follow-up study consisted of interviews with 40 facu...

BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness with great impact on long-term outcome after liver transplantation (LT). Despite this, the current level of glycemic control and quality of screening strategies for diabetes-associated conditions that are being provided to liver transplant recipients with diabetes have not yet been assessed. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional, multicenter study that included 344 liver transplant recipients and examined the level of glycemic control and its associated factors, as well as the quality of screening strategies for diabetes-associated conditions. RESULTS Seventy-five patients (21.8%) suffered from diabetes before transplantation, and 82 (23.8%) developed diabetes mellitus after transplantation. Adequate glycemic control (HbA1c < 7%) was achieved in 66.7% of the patients. Forty-eight percent of patients underwent regular screening for retinopathy, 47.1% for nephropathy, 4.5% for neuropathy, and 5.7% for foot ulcers. Diabetes was associated with higher frequency of cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia both before and after LT. Multivariate analysis revealed association between poor glycemic control and arterial hypertension, presence of diabetes before transplantation, elevated GGT, and insulin use. CONCLUSIONS Glycemic control was inadequate in 33.3% of LT recipients with diabetes, and screening protocols for diabetes-associated conditions did not meet the standards for medical care set by the American Diabetes Association in any of the participating centers. Consequently, this study reveals a clear deficiency in the quality of diabetes care provided to patients after LT and, hence, we predict that future progress in this area will have a significant impact on medium-term to long-term outcome of these patients.

This essay focuses on the contradictory state of feminism today, showing how the transformations feminism has undergone since the inception of the women’s liberation movement in the late 1960s have manifested accommodations to changes in the broader political arena. To illustrate this, Aguilar’s article traces the evolution of “intersectionality,” a central concept in feminism, from the “triple jeopardy” slogan of the second wave. It makes evident that while intersectionality recounts and mimics the triple jeopardy motif propounded by US third world women it has, in fact, successfully been emptied of its revolutionary content. This essay argues that such evisceration characterizes contemporary US feminism. To resolve this quandary, Aguilar proposes that sharper analytical tools be deployed to comprehend a larger social totality than what prevailing discourse offers and that creative energies be channeled into the building of a revolutionary social movement.

Background & Aims Cell therapy has been used to attenuate liver injury. Here we evaluated whether genetic engineering of either bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (MNC) or endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) many enhance their hepatoprotective properties. Methods Mice with ConA-induced hepatitis or with lethal fulminant hepatitis resulting from administration of an adenovirus encoding CD40L (AdCD40L) received an intra-splenic injection of saline or 2×10 6 unmodified MNC or EPC or the same cells transduced ex vivo with an adenovirus expressing luciferase (MNCLUC and EPCLUC) or encoding the hepatoprotective cytokine cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1) (MNCCT-1 and EPCCT-1). We analyzed the extent of liver damage, the intensity of inflammatory reaction, and animal survival. Results Luciferase immunohistochemistry showed that after injection into the spleen, the engineered cells migrated efficiently to the damaged liver. In mice with ConA hepatitis EPCCT-1, but not other forms of cell therapy, significantly decreased serum transaminases and induced more intense histological improvement than other treatments. This superior therapeutic effect was associated with upregulation of cytoprotective molecules including IGF-I and EGF, lower expression of proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1b and TNFα, and decreased granzyme B levels. In AdCD40L-induced lethal fulminant hepatitis, EPCCT-1 also exceeded other cell therapies in attenuating the expression of proinflammatory mediators and hepatic injury enabling 35.7% survival while mortality was 100% in the other treatment groups. Conclusions Genetic engineering of EPC to overexpress CT-1 enhances the hepatoprotective properties of EPC and constitutes a therapy that deserves consideration for acute liver failure.

Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election was a political surprise to almost everyone, domestically and internationally. This paper investigates international investors’ reaction to this apparent global political surprise. Employing an event study methodology, we test the three widely known behavioral hypotheses concerning international investor reaction to this unexpected news, that is, the Overreaction Hypothesis (OH), the Uncertain Information Hypothesis (UIH), and the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH). The study results show that most of the indexes initially reacted unfavorably to the announcement of Trump’s win; however, subsequent stock index returns exhibit corrective upward patterns consistent with the predictions of the OH, except for the Latin American and France markets. The reactions of the other indexes appear to be favorable and in line with the prediction of the UIH. These findings suggest that in most countries under study, investors could utilize contrarian strategies to generate abnormal returns, as evidenced by price reversal following the arrival of the surprise. The evolution of the modern organization is currently marked by the amplification of interdependencies with the environment in which it operates; the expression of this evolution is the accentuation of the open character of the organization conceived as a system, reflected both on the level of "inputs" - production factors and information - and on that of "outputs" - material goods, information, and services - through which it integrates into the environment national and international environment and which knows a much-increased variety and intensity compared to the previous period. Any change in the environment must be known and mastered, in order to ensure self-regulation through legal, conflictual, and operational sources. Strategic communication takes two basic forms: the development of communication relationships with the external environment and forecasting the evolution and changes that can occur outside the organization and which can affect their activity. The organization tries to survive in the external, necessarily competitive environment, by building profitable relationships with its key actors: local authorities, directors of other organizations, in general people who are considered to be influential. At the time of the initiation of these communication networks, they are not really indispensable. However, they are designed with the idea that they can prove useful in case of a crisis or other unexpected event.

Effects of auditory deprivation on speech production by ten cochlear-implanted children were investigated by turning off the implant for durations ranging from 0.3 to 5.0 s and measuring the formant frequencies (F1 and F2) of the vowel /epsilon/. In five of the ten talkers, F1 and/or F2 shifted when auditory feedback was eliminated. Without feedback, F2 frequency lowered consistently, suggesting vowel centralization. Phonetic transcription indicated that some of these acoustic changes led to perceptible shifts in phonetic quality. The results provide evidence that brief periods of auditory deprivation can produce perceptible changes in vowels produced by some cochlear-implanted children.

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE: Early diagnosis of retinoblastoma, the most common intraocular cancer, can save both a child’s life and vision. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that many children across the world are diagnosed late. To our knowledge, the clinical presentation of retinoblastoma has never been assessed on a global scale. OBJECTIVES: To report the retinoblastoma stage at diagnosis in patients across the world during a single year, to investigate associations between clinical variables and national income level, and to investigate risk factors for advanced disease at diagnosis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 278 retinoblastoma treatment centers were recruited from June 2017 through December 2018 to participate in a cross-sectional analysis of treatment-naive patients with retinoblastoma who were diagnosed in 2017. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Age at presentation, proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, and tumor stage and metastasis. RESULTS: The cohort included 4351 new patients from 153 countries; the median age at diagnosis was 30.5 (interquartile range, 18.3-45.9) months, and 1976 patients (45.4%) were female. Most patients (n = 3685 [84.7%]) were from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Globally, the most common indication for referral was leukocoria (n = 2638 [62.8%]), followed by strabismus (n = 429 [10.2%]) and proptosis (n = 309 [7.4%]). Patients from high-income countries (HICs) were diagnosed at a median age of 14.1 months, with 656 of 666 (98.5%) patients having intraocular retinoblastoma and 2 (0.3%) having metastasis. Patients from low-income countries were diagnosed at a median age of 30.5 months, with 256 of 521 (49.1%) having extraocular retinoblastoma and 94 of 498 (18.9%) having metastasis. Lower national income level was associated with older presentation age, higher proportion of locally advanced disease and distant metastasis, and smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma. Advanced disease at diagnosis was more common in LMICs even after adjusting for age (odds ratio for low-income countries vs upper-middle–income countries and HICs, 17.92 [95% CI, 12.94-24.80], and for lower-middle–income countries vs upper-middle–income countries and HICs, 5.74 [95% CI, 4.30-7.68]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study is estimated to have included more than half of all new retinoblastoma cases worldwide in 2017. Children from LMICs, where the main global retinoblastoma burden lies, presented at an older age with more advanced disease and demonstrated a smaller proportion of familial history of retinoblastoma, likely because many do not reach a childbearing age. Given that retinoblastoma is curable, these data are concerning and mandate intervention at national and international levels. Further studies are needed to investigate factors, other than age at presentation, that may be associated with advanced disease in LMICs.

- Abstract
CHEK2 gene mutations occur in a subset of patients with familial breast cancer, acting as moderate/low penetrance cancer susceptibility alleles. Although CHEK2 is no longer recognized as a major determinant of the Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a hereditary condition predisposing to cancer at multiple sites, it cannot be ruled out that mutations of this gene play a role in malignancies arising in peculiar multi-cancer families. To assess the contribution of CHEK2 to the breast cancer/sarcoma phenotype, we screened for germ-line sequence variations of the gene among 12 probands from hereditary breast/ovarian cancer families with one case of sarcoma that tested wild-type for mutations in the BRCA1, BRCA2, and TP53 genes. Two cases harbored previously unreported mutations in CHEK2, the c.507delT and c.38A>G, leading to protein truncation (p.Phe169LeufsX2) and amino acid substitution (p.His13Arg), respectively. These mutations were not considered common polymorphic variants, as they were undetected in 230 healthy controls of the same ethnic origin. While the c.38A>G encodes a mutant protein that behaves in biochemical assays as the wild-type form, the c.507delT is a loss-of-function mutation. The identification of two previously unreported CHEK2 variants, including a truncating mutation leading to constitutional haploinsufficiency, in individuals belonging to families selected for breast cancer/sarcoma phenotype, supports the hypothesis that the CHEK2 gene may act as a factor contributing to individual tumor development in peculiar familial backgrounds.

Researchers have illustrated how this post–Civil Rights period is marked by significant changes to the organization and implementation of systems of racial stratification and expressions of racialized hostility. Consonant with the persistence of racial inequality is the notion that “race” is no longer relevant. In this context, we consider print media accounts of Nancy Lopez’s participation in 14 tournaments between June and October 2002.

Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy that affects an increasing number of patients worldwide. Despite all the efforts to understand its pathogenesis and develop new treatment modalities, MM remains an incurable disease. Novel immunotherapies, such as CAR T cell therapy (CAR) and bispecific T cell engagers (BiTE), are intensively targeting different surface antigens, such as BMCA, SLAMF7 (CS1), GPRC5D, FCRH5 or CD38. However, stem cell transplantation is still indispensable in transplant-eligible patients. Studies suggest that the early use of immunotherapy may improve outcomes significantly. In this review, we summarize the currently available clinical literature on CAR and BiTE in MM. Furthermore, we will compare these two T cell-based immunotherapies and discuss potential therapeutic approaches to promote development of new clinical trials, using T cell-based immunotherapies, even as bridging therapies to a transplant.

By 2002 Venus and Serena Williams were the top two women players on the women’s professional tennis tour. Nevertheless, despite their spectacular success, there has been a decidedly ambivalent tenor toward their accomplishments. Applying Raymond Williams’ concept of “structures of feeling,” this essay considers how dominant cultural meanings and values are taken up and expressed through the atmosphere produced at a sport event.

To achieve the objectives of COP28 for transitioning away from fossil fuels and phasing these out, both natural and technological solutions are essential, necessitating a step-change in how we implement social innovation. Given the significant CO _2 emissions produced by the building sector, there is an urgent need for a transformative shift towards a net-zero building stock by mid-century. This transition to zero-energy and zero-emission buildings is difficult due to complex processes and substantial costs. Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) offers a promising solution due to the benefits of enhanced energy efficiency and electricity production. The availability of roof and façade space in offices and other types of buildings, especially in large cities, permits photovoltaic integration in both opaque and transparent surfaces. This study investigates the synergistic relationship between solar conversion technologies and nature-based components. Through a meta-analysis of peer-reviewed literature and critical assessment, effective BIPVs with greenery (BIPVGREEN) combinations suitable for various climatic zones are identified. The results highlight the multi-faceted benefits of this integration across a range of techno-economic and social criteria and underscore the feasibility of up-scaling these solutions for broader deployment. Applying a SWOT analysis approach, the internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as the external opportunities and threats for BIPVGREEN deployment, are investigated. The analysis reveals key drivers of synergistic effects and multi-benefits, while also addressing the challenges associated with optimizing performance and reducing investment costs. The strengths of BIPVGREEN in terms of energy efficiency and sustainable decarbonization, along with its potential to mitigate urban and climate temperature increases, enhance its relevance to the built environment, especially for informal settlements. The significance of prioritizing this BIPVGREEN climate mitigation action in low-income vulnerable regions and informal settlements is crucial through the minimum tax financing worldwide and citizen’s engagement in architectural BIPVGREEN co-integration.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of saline sealing in reducing the incidence of pneumothorax after a CT-guided lung biopsy. This was a retrospective case-control study of patients who underwent CT-guided biopsies for lung tumors using 18 G semiautomatic core needles in conjunction with 17 G coaxial needles. The patients were divided into two consecutive groups: a historical Group A (n = 111), who did not receive saline sealing, and Group B (n = 87), who received saline sealing. In Group B, NaCl 0.9% was injected through the coaxial needle upon its removal. The incidence of pneumothorax and chest tube insertion was compared between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to verify the contribution of other pneumothorax risk factors. The study included 198 patients, with 111 in Group A and 87 in Group B. There was a significantly (p = 0.02) higher pneumothorax rate in Group A (35.1%, n = 39) compared to Group B (20.7%, n = 18). The difference regarding chest tube insertion was not significant (p = 0.1), despite a tendency towards more insertions in Group A (5.4%, n = 6), compared to Group B (1.1%, n = 1). Among the risk factors for pneumothorax, only the presence of emphysema (OR = 3.5, p = 0.0007) and belonging to Group A (OR = 2.2, p = 0.02) were significant. Saline sealing of the needle tract after a CT-guided lung biopsy can significantly reduce the incidence of pneumothorax. This technique is safe, readily available, and inexpensive, and should be considered as a routine preventive measure during this procedure.

In the current business environment, which has radically changed due to either socio-economic turmoil caused by economic or health crises (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) or due to technology and digitalization, internal audit has gained an important role within companies. Thus, in the last seventy years, internal audit has developed and evolved from being the function that controls accounting and financial data, to becoming the strategic function that improves governance processes for shareholders and management. The internal auditor helps an organization to meet its goals by providing a systematic and disciplined approach for assessing and improving the effectiveness of risk management and governance processes. Only an effective internal audit can achieve its tasks properly. Efficiency depends on the subordination level of the internal audit function (this needs to be adequate for the internal audit to be independent and objective). Efficiency also depends on the professional qualification and practical experience of internal audit staff, on the engagement’s strategy, as well as on activities and added value for the company, and on its continuous improvement capacity. This research aims to analyse the perception of professional practitioners within Romanian professional bodies, both from the perspective of internal auditors who do this service based on audit engagements performed at company level, but also from the perspective of employees working in these companies’ internal audit departments. The main goal is to create and shape a holistic framework to be used for assessing the added value of internal audit based on stakeholders’ perceptions. The main results obtained highlight the fundamental role of the quality of human capital and of corporate governance at company level. Management will take responsibility for implementing the auditor’s recommendations only based on an effective communication and reporting of audit observations. At the same time, the internal auditor’s integrity, independence, objectivity, and competencies represent the foundation of an internal audit function that has all the prerequisites for gaining management’s trust, support, and cooperation. Finally, the results of this research show the importance of the organizational context in which the audit function is organised. According to the worldwide well-established three-line defence model, the audit function is the last line of defence against fraud or non-compliance, thus ensuring the preservation of the company’s resources.
