Abstract

The growth of the cartilaginous infrapharyngobranchial II (part of the upper pharyngeal jaws) in the cichlid fish Astatotilapia elegans was investigated in four successive early postembryonic stages. Total cell number, individual cell volumes, total cell, total matrix and total cartilage volume were accurately measured or calculated. The share of cell and matrix volume increase in the overall growth was calculated for each of the transitions. Matrix volume increase accounted for almost 60% of the overall rudiment increase. Non-hypertrophic cells and the matrix produced by them together accounted for about three quarters of the total cartilage volume increase. Zones with particular characteristics (cell orientation, cell shape, degenerative features, etc.) were distinguished in each of the four stages separately. The sequence of increasing mean cell volume between zones was interpreted as reflecting growth directions within the cartilage. Apposition probably largely contributed to the observed cell volume increase. Mean cell volume and mean matrix volume per cell showed a highly significant positive relation. Cell density showed a highly significant negative relation to both mean cell volume and mean matrix volume. Our results indicate that the area of hypertrophy and cartilage resorption may be established quite early in the rudiment before overt manifestation of these processes.

Abstract

Within the framework of LIFE, one of the larger nature restoration projects in Flanders was realized on the right bank of the estuarine part of the Yser. General aim of the initiative was to restore or create beach-dune-salt marsh ecotones with salt-fresh, dynamic-stable, wet-dry and mud-sand ecotones. In order to reach this goal, several large buildings and roads were broken down, an entire tidal dock was restructured and some 500,000m³ of dredging material was removed to restore or create intertidal and coastal dune habitats and their connecting ecotones. Measures were taken to avoid abrupt topographical transitions along potential ecological gradients. It was decided to begin monitoring (2001-2004) from the very start of the restoration process (1999-2003). Monitoring was multidisciplinary and realized in a partnership between several scientific institutes (Ghent University, Catholic University of Louvain, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and Institute of Nature Conservation with facility support of VLIZ). Monitoring included the most relevant abiotic conditions such as sedimentation and erosion, topography and ground water fluctuations, and biological response variables, i.e. flora and vegetation, terrestrial arthropods, benthic macrofauna and birds. It was decided to include two monitoring levels, an area-covering monitoring of the entire nature reserve (ca. 128ha) and a detailed monitoring of changes along transects perpendicular to the main ecological gradients. In this paper we present some results of the first three years of monitoring.

61. A genetic comparison of Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of a saltmarsh beetle

Abstract

Enzyme and dispersal polymorphism in the saltmarsh carabid beetle Pogonus chalceus Marsham were compared between 30 Atlantic and nine Mediterranean European populations. Allozyme results showed that Mediterranean beetles (France, Spain) are genetically distinct from Atlantic populations. All Mediterranean beetles screened showed complete fixation at one locus (IDH1), which in Atlantic populations nearly always varied, whereas some unique Mediterranean alleles were observed for another locus (MPI). Genetic differentiation (allozymes) between Mediterranean populations, although highly significant, appeared to be much lower (Fst = 0.098) than between Atlantic populations (Fst = 0.178). Beetles from the Mediterranean showed a remarkably high dispersal power in all populations studied, whereas Atlantic populations showed wing polymorphism and reduced dispersal power to much more varying degrees. These results, along with relatively lower levels of Pogonus chalceus abundance in many Mediterranean saltmarshes, strongly suggest increased levels of extinction/recolonisation in relation to a lower degree of habitat persistence in Mediterranean compared with most Atlantic saltmarshes. Conclusions are relevant to issues in both evolutionary and conservation biology
