In Octopus vulgaris both male and female reproductive systems are considered source and target organs of sex steroids as demostrated by the presence of sex steroids hormones and their receptors.

Ionotropic glutamate receptors have been subdivided into N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and AMPA/kainate classes. NMDA receptor subunit 2A and 2B immunoreactivity is shown to be present in specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS) of the cephalopod molluscs Sepia officinalis and Octopus vulgaris. An antibody that recognizes both mammalian NMDAR2A and NMDAR2B subunits equally was used. SDS-PAGE/Western blot analysis performed on membrane proteins revealed an immunoreactive band at 170 kDa for both species. Immunoreactive bands from both Octopus and Sepia brains disappeared when the antibody was preabsorbed with membrane proteins from rat hippocampus or from their own brains. The same antibody was then used for immunohistochemical staining of serial sections of the CNS to reveal localized specific staining of cell bodies and fibers in several lobes of the brain. Staining was found in lower motor centers, in some higher motor centers, in learning centers, and in the optic lobes. Immunopositivity was also found in the areas of brain that control the activity of the optic gland, a gonadotropic endocrine gland. These findings suggest that glutamate, via NMDA receptors, may be involved as a signaling molecule in motor, learning, visual, and olfactory systems in the cephalopod brain

Modeling activities, specifically model calibration, need sensor measurements. Since data collection is expensive and time-consuming, ineffective measurements should be avoided. For this reason, it is important to have a method for designing the field data collection that will give the most useful information. While sampling design problems were more studied in ground-water systems, there are only few applications to water distribution networks. In this paper three different sensitivity-based methods for selecting the worthwhile sensor location in water distribution network are compared. The covariance matrix method, previously applied to identify the most useful loading condition under which to take measurements, is adapted to a sampling design problem. Since this method considers the correlation between the coefficients of the sensitivity matrix of the state variables with respect to calibration parameters, it has a higher computational cost. The three methods are applied to a hypothetical roughness calibration problem. The results show that there are no marked differences between the three methods, while the difference between poor and good sampling design is significant when the number of sensors is limited. This particular result remarks the importance of using a procedure for selecting sensor location.

Una sempre crescente attenzione è rivolta alla necessità di avere una gestione efficace delle reti di distribuzione idrica per un uso più oculato della risorsa. In quest’ottica, è estremamente utile poter disporre di modelli in grado di simulare adeguatamente il comportamento delle reti, in modo da effettuare le scelte gestionali più opportune. Af-finché un modello di simulazione fornisca risultati prossimi a quelli osservati è neces-sario prevedere una sua calibrazione. Per la calibrazione dei modelli di simulazione, ma anche per risolvere altri problemi, ugualmente importanti, quali l’individuazione delle perdite, è necessario un’adeguata conoscenza del funzionamento reale della rete. Questa è rappresentata unicamente dai dati forniti dai sensori collocati nei nodi o sui lati della rete. In genere, soprattutto nelle reti di grosse dimensioni, il numero dei sensori disponibili è sempre molto ridotto e l’inserimento di altri punti di misura sarebbe auspicabile. Dato l’incremento dei costi che comporta l’introduzione di nuove misure, è fondamentale che esse siano realizzate nella maniera più efficiente possibile. Per questo motivo è particolarmente interessante il problema dell’individuazione della migliore disposizione dei sensori, che è lo scopo dell’operazione di progettazione della localizzazione dei punti di misura, o sampling design. Nella seguente nota sono esaminate, criticamente, le procedure maggiormente utilizzate per la localizzazione ottimale dei punti di misura in una rete di distribuzione idrica. Inoltre, con riferimento ad una rete di distribuzione precedentemente utilizzata dagli autori, vengono applicate alcune delle procedure descritte evidenziando i diversi risultati cui si perviene.

Utilizzando metodi immunologici è stata dimostrata la presenza di recettori per l'estradiolo e il progesterone nella femmina del gambero d'acqua dolce A.pallipes. Ciò suggerisce non solo una somiglianza con i medesimi recettori dei vertebrati ma anche un loro coinvolgimento nella regolazione di alcune funzioni riproduttive di questo crostaceo.

The results suggest that nitric oxide (NO) may be involved as a signaling molecule in feeding, motor, learning, visual, and olfactory systems in the cuttlefish brain. The presence of NOS in the cephalopod “cerebellum” and learning centers is discussed in the context of the vertebrate CNS.

I dati sperimentali presentati, insieme a risultati pregressi circa la presenza di steroidi sessuali nella gonade di Octopus, inducono ad assegnare un ruolo funzionale a tali steroidi ed in particolare al progesterone, che sembra giocare un ruolo primario nella vitellogenesi.

The presence of a glutamatergic control in the CNS-optic gland axis in cephalopods can be seen as an analogue with neuroglandular system regulating the sexual maturity of vertebrates.

Numerical modelling of the flow in a meandering channel is compared with experiments done by one of the authors. A peculiar 2DH model, where bottom shear stresses are computed taking into account also accelerations, has been developed for the comparison. Good results are obtained in some sections of the channel, but, in others, some experimentally observed flow features are not well reproduced. An explanation is offered for the difficulties encountered in modelling the strong secondary current that appears along the bend.

Given the presence of APGW-amide immunoreactive neurons in the posterior olfactory lobule, which is a source of GnRH-like peptides, we hypothesise either a direct or a mediated involvement of a variety of neuropeptides in the nervous control of the activity of the optic gland.

I modelli di simulazione, soprattutto se impiegati nella gestione delle reti di distribuzione idrica, devono essere in grado di riprodurre il comportamento della rete reale, per cui risulta necessaria una fase di calibrazione del modello. In particolare nella memoria è presentato un nuovo metodo per la calibrazione rispetto alle portate erogate nei nodi interni della rete, utilizzando le misure di pressione e portata disponibili. Nella procedura sviluppata il problema della calibrazione è formulato come un problema di ottimizzazione, costituito da una funzione obiettivo quadratica soggetta a vincoli resi lineari mediante il calcolo di una matrice di sensitività. L’aspetto innovativo del metodo proposto consiste nel fatto che la stima iniziale delle portate erogate assume un ruolo di primaria importanza. Il metodo è applicato a una rete schematica e la bontà della calibrazione è verificata analizzando successivamente il comportamento della rete calibrata in diverse condizioni di funzionamento.

Condizioni di scarsa luminosità inducono, in Octopus vulgaris, l'attivazione della ghiandola ottica e la successiva maturazione delle gonadi.
