BIG data , *ACADEMIC dissertations , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *SYSTEMS theory , *CONTENT analysis , *SOCIAL media - Abstract
Nowadays, with the development of technology, we can say that systems integrated into science are complex, digitaland versatile. One of these systems is the concept of "big data", which has become more popular recently. It can be said that many institutions and organizations, as well as the academy world, have shown interest in the concept of big data, which is emerging with a huge pool of information, especially with the increase in the use of social media. In this study, the situation of big data in academic literature, the way it is handled, social sciences and humanities were evaluated with priority. In this context, the Higher Education Institution Thesis doctoral dissertations in the field of social sciences between 2010 and 2020 were determined as a sample. In the research, qualitative and quantitative content analysis was performed as a method. Findings obtained; They were classified according to years, institutes and departments and as a result of proportional distributions, the theses about big data were examined. As a result, it has been observed that the concept of big data is mostly discussed in the field of science, while social sciences remain in the background in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this article is to study the production of doctoral theses on foreign languages, from our point of view as Spanish speakers, conducted in Andalusia from 2010 to 2021 in order to collect the total number of dissertations and the diachronic distribution; to describe the production per universities, authors and directors according to the gender; and to gather the descriptors most used. Results show that, during the period 2010 to 2021, Andalusian public universities recorded 266 dissertations on FL. The annual average is of 22.16 doctoral theses per year. The representation of women in the authorship of dissertations is 175 (65.78 %), as opposed to 91 men (34.22 %). The participation in the direction of such PhD theses is 51.45 % for women and 48.55 % for men. In accordance with the composition of the direction, doctoral theses were supervised in equal percentage by both only women and (41.35 %) and only men (41.35 %). Mixed direction reached 17.29 %. The amount of 117 different descriptors was gathered. The most used keyword is translation and interpreting (22.7 %). In conclusion, a decrease in the doctoral production on FL was found at Andalusian universities as of 2016. The authorship reveals that FL is a feminised field. In addition, it has been confirmed that mixed co-directions are unusual in this area.

INFORMATION science , *LIBRARY science - Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate the accuracy of references in the fourteen Ph.D. theses in Library and Information Science (LIS) submitted to Banasthali Vidyapith, Rajasthan, India. One thousand seven hundred and twenty one (1721) journal references were checked thoroughly dividing them into seven bibliographic elements, i.e. name of author(s), article title, journal title, year, volume number, issue number, and pages (both first and last page). These components were checked from the original journal articles. Results show that 22.08% (380) references in LIS theses had no errors, while 77.92% (1341) references contained errors. In 1341 faulty references, a sum of 2869 errors were observed, out of which 1231 were major and 1638 were minor errors. The reference accuracy rate for LIS theses ranged from 0% to 42.77%. The average number of errors in references was 1.67. The research findings indicate that citation instruction in Pre Ph.D. Programme is strongly required to promote better citation behaviour. GRADUATE education , *DOCTORAL degree , *RESEARCH & development projects , *CENSUS , *COMMUNITIES - Abstract
We analyzed the results obtained for the total count between 2007 and 2018 of (1) doctoral theses defended in the 55 universities with undergraduate and/or graduate studies in communication that offer doctoral degrees, (2) competitive projects in state calls in the social sciences and humanities areas where the object of study includes a socially significant dimension of "communication" practices, and (3) papers resulting from R&D projects published in reference journals in the area of communication. These documents are the most representative of the research activity of faculty, because they constitute the published results originating from research that is recognized and legitimized by academic life, without which such documents could not have been published. Thus, the articles collected here constitute a census of publications based on previous research, since all those articles whose object of study was not previous research were not selected, e.g., essays, or epistemological reviews of authors, schools, and/or theoretical or methodological trends. Papers presented at Asociación Española de Investigación de la Comunicación (AE-IC) congresses, which are also being studied as part of the MapCom project, could also have been included; however, they are only considered tangentially herein because only a minority of them are expressly linked to research results. This overview of the productivity of communication research in Spain over a decade analyzes documents grouped by universities, Autonomous Communities, author gender, and years. A total of 4,158 documents have been analyzed. The results reflect the influence of the scientific policies of the research quality assessment agencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INFORMATION science , *LIBRARY science , *HUMAN capital , *RESEARCH methodology , *TWENTY-first century , *BIBLIOGRAPHIC databases , *QUANTUM information science - Abstract
Spanish research in Documentation (or Library and Information Science, LIS) began to stand out in the 1980s, in parallel with the creation of university studies in Library and Information Science, and it increased its activity significantly until the year 2000. In this period, research in Documentation was oriented to disseminate rather than innovate, and also had a low international impact, shortage of economic and human resources, and poor methodological quality. In the first 20 years of the 21st century, we have witnessed an outstanding growth and diversification of this research activity, which has led to the overcoming of most of the problems mentioned before. The objective of the text is to present a general overview of the development of Documentation research in Spain in the last 20 years based on the analysis of five fundamental aspects: publications (articles and monographs), topics and methodologies, scientific journals, research projects and doctoral theses. General descriptive data from public statistical sources and comments from a bibliographic review are provided for each of them. As a conclusion, a very positive global balance of Spanish research in Documentation in the last 20 years stands out, not only a quantitative increase (in publications, theses, research projects, etc.) but also a qualitative improvement in the use of research methods and techniques, as well as a diversification of the research topics. In any case, internationalization (collaboration with foreign authors) and the presentation of international projects could be improved. Finally, there is a risk in near future related to aging and the absence of generational renewal of the research staff that can will slow down this growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VALUE chains , *ACQUISITION of data , *EDUCATIONAL programs , *GREY literature , *SCIENTIFIC development - Abstract
This article proposes a model to measure the relevance of doctoral theses as knowledge objects and their influence on researchers' training. The quality conditions were evaluated in four dimensions: (1) internal consistency of the object of knowledge (thesis); (2) impact of the knowledge object and its application in the development of new scientific publications; (3) effect of the object of knowledge on the subject (student) as a researcher; and (4) collective consequences of the subject in research environments. To test the functionality of the model, data were collected from doctoral theses from two educational programs (liberal arts and sciences), by measuring the stability of the evaluated dimensions as a value chain, observing inconsistency in the results because of the consecutive weakening between the first and the last dimension. - Abstract
Between 2004 and 2006, the two most relevant scientific associations for academics and researchers in the field of public relations and communication were set up in Spain with the mission of strengthening and disseminating research and promoting forums and networks for scientific exchange: the Association of Researchers in Public Relations (AIRP) and the Spanish Association for Communication Research (AE-IC). Based on a study of the doctoral theses presented and contributions to international conferences organized by both associations in the period between 2004 and 2018, our main objective is to determine, describe, and analyze research trends in the academic field of public relations in the Spanish context. To this end, content analysis is applied as a qualitative and quantitative method in the social sciences. Among the most relevant results, the following stand out: the predominance of women researchers in the field, public relations and digital communication as the main topics, the use of mixed methodology, and content analysis as the main research technique. The diagnosis of the evolution and management of public relations research in Spain presented herein defines the corresponding trends and challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study is to examine the doctoral theses in STEM education in Turkey in a comprehensive manner. Thematic content analysis method was used in the study. The data were obtained from the doctoral theses published until 2020 by examining CoHE National Thesis Center. As a result of the screenings, 30 doctoral theses were reached in the field of STEM education. Doctoral theses in the study were analyzed using the matrix. The data obtained was analyzed by using descriptive and content analysis method. In the findings obtained from the study, studies investigating the effect of STEM approach on academic success, understanding, scientific process skills and attitudes towards STEM are frequently encountered. In this context, it can be stated that studies have been carried out on the effects of STEM applications on both affective field, skill and cognitive field. However, when we look at the variables examined, it is generally understood that similar variables are studied. In this context, it is thought that studies on new variables, especially current skills in STEM education, will be important for the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Anna Biström, Scandinavian Literature, University of Helsinki “The production of knowledge and choice of subject – masters’ and doctoral theses about older Finland-Swedish authors” The aim of the article is to study patterns and progress lines concerning the amounts of masters’ and doctoral theses found about Finland-Swedish authors who have been publishing literary works 1830–1930. The study builds upon quantitative data based on information in bibliographies and library databases, especially Finna (finna.fi). The article takes one of its theoretical starting points in Michel Foucaults theory about subjugated knowledges and genealogies (“Society Must Be Defended”. Lectures at the Collège de France 1975–1976, 2003). The choice of subject for theses, can be seen as one of the instances, where knowledge is produced and legitimized. Against the background of former research, the study shows examples of both tradition and pioneering work, introducing new authors and categories of literature into the field of research. For instance, the study shows that doctoral theses have been one important arena for knowledge about formerly forgotten female authors, while newer literature and children’s literature have been more frequent as subjects in masters’ theses. The study also shows there is an overall decline in theses about older literature.

The late 1960s can be described as a time of democratic awakening and social upheaval, also regarding discussions on education. Taking this period of critique and questioning as a starting point, the work proceeds to examine knowledge movements. Knowledge circulation and knowledge transformation processes between political and educational practice as well as educational theory are analysed on the basis of 9 biographical narratives of people who were active in educational or political practice projects around 1968. The first theoretical part of this thesis outlines the historical context and introduces the state of research on '1968 and pedagogy'. Subsequently, the thesis introduces its knowledge-historical theoretical approaches, from which the concept of knowledge movements developed for this thesis emerges. The first part of the thesis concludes with the presentation of the methodical and methodological premises, explains theoretically the applied procedure of an integrative coupling of discourses and biographies and shows the form of practical application in the work. The second part of the thesis includes the presentation of the empirical results and along inductively identified thematic strands, various aspects of new perspectives that can be considered as (co-)inspired/stimulated by the critical-alternative pedagogical milieu that are examined in greater detail. The third part of the paper presents the results and links them back to the theoretical premises. Thus, it is shown how knowledge of the discursive space of the critical-alternative pedagogical milieu changed through its discursive entanglements with the established educational science and how the established educational science entered a communicative process of opening through the confrontation with the new forms of knowledge. For educational science, the results and documented processes can thus can thus serve as a sample for contemplation and be referred to introspectively in the context of today's processes of theory formation or research. Disciplinary continuities and discontinuities were shown and hence it is possible to revise/identify trends or demarcations via the knowledge-historical findings of the work., Die späten 1960er Jahre können als eine Zeit des demokratischen Aufbruchs und des gesellschaftlichen Umschwungs, auch bezogen auf die Thematisierungen von Bildung und Erziehung, bezeichnet werden.

Arguably one of the most characteristic features of the teacher-student relationship is its multifaceted asymmetry in knowledge, ability, experience, dependency, power, etc. The ambivalent significance of this asymmetry for the teacher-student interaction has been highlighted by educational researchers, teachers, and teacher educators alike. The asymmetrical relationship structure is assumed to be central to the “grammar of schooling” that enables pedagogical interaction in the classroom and sets its parameters. At the same time, it is also considered to pose challenges to teachers in their interaction with students. So far, however, no conceptual account of the asymmetry has been proposed, and few studies have investigated it systematically as a complex, multifaceted feature of the teacher-student relationship. This qualitative study examines the asymmetry from the teachers’ perspective. Drawing on structural-theoretical accounts of teacher professionalism and systems-theoretical conceptions of pedagogical communication, it develops a schematic conception of the asymmetry and its complexity that provides a heuristic frame of reference for the empirical study. Using an approach based on Mannheim’s and Bohnsack’s praxeological sociology of knowledge, the study asks how teachers experience their interaction with students regarding the asymmetry of their relationship and how they deal with and shape the asymmetry when interacting with students. The study focuses on the concept of collective orientations, or habitus, of teachers, i.e., collective, embodied, tacit knowledge that underlies the teachers’ actions as implicitly practice-guiding principles. The findings show that the interviewed teachers perceive the asymmetry as being shaped coconstructively through the interaction of teacher and students, although the interviewed teachers differ in how they experience the process of this co-construction: as antagonism or as congruence in co-construction. Moreover, the teachers take for granted the asymmetry of the relationship and their position as superior in knowledge, ability, and experience as well as power and control. They routinely and as a matter of course rely on this position when interacting with students. However, different collective orientations underlie this reliance on the asymmetry. Two contrasting types of orientations have been reconstructed: orientations primarily centered on the assumed requirements of pedagogical practice and orientations primarily centered on the teachers’ self-interest. Furthermore, the complexity of the asymmetrical relationship structure as spelled out by the heuristic-theoretical conception is not reflected in how the teachers experience their interaction with students regarding the asymmetry and how they deal with it. On the one hand, the interviewed teachers focus on selected aspects of the asymmetry. On the other hand, how they deal with the asymmetry is structurally analogous across theoretically distinguishable aspects. These results raise further questions on how teachers experience and deal with the asymmetry as well as more metatheoretical questions regarding the conception of collective orientations underlying teachers’ professional practice., Eines der zentralen Merkmale der Beziehung von Lehrperson und Lernenden ist ihre vielgestaltige Asymmetrie hinsichtlich Wissen, Können, Erfahrung, Abhängigkeit, Befugnisse etc.

This research analyzes scientific articles and doctoral theses on communication that take vulnerable groups as an object of study, with the aim of determining how research on this topic has evolved and to confirm whether it is an emerging object of study in research on communication ethics in Spain. We resorted to the location and content analysis of 51 doctoral theses defended between 2007 and 2018 and 35 scientific articles derived from R&D projects and published in the same period. The results obtained expose the dominant epistemological trends in research on vulnerable agents in terms of phases, objectives, objects, collectives, and themes addressed. As a result, this study confirms vulnerable agents as an "emerging" object within the area of communication but warns of a null route of this thematic in the work agenda of research on communication ethics.

DOCTORAL students - Abstract
This article focuses on the methodological meaning of the concept of contingency. I illustrate this with a study of doctoral qualification processes, which examines the methodological and substantive dimensions of the contingency paradigm. The study focuses on the way in which doctoral students perceive and conceptualize their research processes, and it crystallized the factors that influence the writing of their dissertations. Horizons of meaning and epistemic concepts, for example, play an essential role. These influence the areas of conflict that arise, the strategies for acting that the doctoral students opt for, and the consequences that result from these strategies. Dealing with contingency turns out to be the central challenge, especially in the supervision of dissertations. The study demonstrates the importance of developing competencies in "contingency encounter" in research and teaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current society inserted in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) has produced vertiginous changes in relation to breastfeeding. That is why we consider it necessary to analyze the knowledge and scientific production carried out to date on this discipline. From this concern, this research emerges as an interdisciplinary study that aims to give priority to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. The purpose is to investigate the growth and distribution of scientific documents through their analysis and evaluation, in order to gather the scientific production of researchers on breastfeeding. To this end, a sample of 155 Doctoral Theses published in Spanish Universities is used, with the common denominator of the word breastfeeding, in the period that goes from 1980 to 2015. The methodology used is mixed, with qualitative data analysis, framed within a retrospective and descriptive analysis, as well as a quantitative analysis through bibliometric indicators. The aim is to offer a solid and reliable set of systematic, empirical and critical research processes and results, in order to present information on current and future research and innovation trends. - Abstract
Fashion is an essential element for many people. In fact, as the textile field has clearly become more important and professional, the studies related to its communication have proliferated in private and public Universities around Spain. This paper tries to highlight the studies in fashion communication carried out by Spanish Universities in the last years. The selected methodology, the bibliometric study from a content analysis, has allowed us to know the main perspectives analysed and using which methodologies, as well as the most prolific Universities in this field. The results were proved by Delphi with academic specialists in innovation and its show that, with respect to universities, we focus on the triangulation of fashion research from the contributions of Complutense University of Madrid, Polytechnic of Valencia, and the University of Vigo and Malaga. The pertinence of the investigation is determined by the need to perform a review of the state of the art that allows future researchers to continue to deepen in fashion studies. Introduction. The scientific production on advertising in the Spanish Universities is analyzed through the identification and characterization of doctoral theses presented on the subject, between the years 1976 and 2016. This will set the current state of knowledge on advertising research in Spain. Methodology. The research conducted was based on a bibliometric analysis of 520 doctoral theses to better understand the time evolution of the scientific production, to formally and thematically characterize such evolution as well as the authors and production centres. Results and conclusions. It was found that scientific production on advertising, according to the doctoral theses presented at Spanish Universities between the years 1976 and 2016, had reached a state of maturity or consolidation, after an important research surge in the last five years. Among their characteristics, we found the following: prominent multidisciplinarity, a low concentration level among universities, low internationalization and a high concentration of topics while favouring specialization. India is one of the massive higher education systems in the world. The doctoral research output of plays a significant role as it is a primitive source and blueprint of research also growing fast pace it has a 24% increase in doctoral degree compare to the previous year. Anti-plagiarism software screening to theses text is boon to Indian universities and first instances it is preserving from copy verbatim the doctoral theses particularly in English against 234592 online theses in Shodhgang repository. But scanning of doctoral theses detecting plagiarism in Indian regional languages not completing effectively the cause is oblivious Indian languages scripts not covered in software. Software tools adopted for the plagiarism/similarity check it showed the diverse results of the similarity index for the same text of doctoral theses. Moreover, the court has observed that human judgment is needed to determine the copying rather than considering the software-generated report are the major issues in the present scenario. Abstract Constructing authorial voice is considered essential in English academic texts. Citation as an important discursive feature contributing to authorial voice has been underexplored, despite fruitful research on citation practices. It also remains largely unknown whether variations in citation-based voice construction exist in doctoral theses completed across training contexts. This study explores and compares authorial voice constructed in citation in the literature review chapters of 20 doctoral theses written by home-grown and overseas-trained Chinese writers (HGWT and OTWT), complemented by interviews with four of the 20 writers. It was found that compared to the HGWT, the OTWT displayed significantly greater use of non-integral citations, "author as agent" integral forms, and summary that contribute to authorial voice. Descriptive statistics for the two subcorpora also suggested that authorial voice was more often communicated via lexical devices loaded with evaluation by the ten home-grown writers whereas the ten overseas-trained writers preferred syntactic and discoursal devices. While the present results are more suggestive than deterministic, this study highlights the importance of promoting novice writers' awareness of the obscure and often unnoticed role of citation in constructing authorial voice. - Abstract
Doctoral research is fundamental for the development and consolidation of the different theories that are incorporated into an area of knowledge. In addition, a fundamental added value is attributed in the construction of the theoretical body of a discipline. From this point of view, the theses are an indicator of the evolutionary state of theoretical development and, in turn, constitute the origin of future academic and scientific publications. In recent years, scientific production in the field of public relations and corporate communication has experienced great growth. The publication of doctoral theses also evidences this increase and in turn reflects the interest in this field of communication which, given its nature, is subject to constant change. The doctoral research and its results allow to detect trends in the research lines, as well as to appreciate the evolution in the approaches of the discipline. That is why it is interesting to know the topics, objects of study and authorship and directions of the theses, both to consolidate certain theories and to detect incipient trends. However, there are still very few bibliometric studies of published doctoral theses on public relations and communication, and there is none that addresses joint and comparative production between Spain and Portugal, countries that are very close from a cultural point of view. Therefore, this work carries out a bibliometric analysis of doctoral research in the area of public relations and corporate communication carried out in Spanish and Portuguese universities between 2006 and 2016. For this purpose, TESEO has been used as a Spanish database and RENATES as the reference database in Portugal. The keywords used in the search equations have revolved around the different nomenclatures that define the discipline and its evolution ("public relations", "corporate communication", "strategic communication", "business communication" and "organizational communication"). The result of the search gave a total of 64 theses that made up the analysis sample, of which 84.4% (54 documents) come from TESEO and 15.6% (10 documents) have been obtained through RENATES. The main results show how there has been a considerable increase in the production of doctoral theses in the last two years analysed in Spain and Portugal. Likewise, it is noted that there is a majority use of the term "public relations" in the two countries against the term "organizational communication" in Portugal and "Corporate Communication" in Spain. On the other hand, there is also a greater representation of applied research compared to that, which deals with a theoretical development, and in an outstanding way, that which analyses cases. This difference is smaller in Portugal, where a certain balance is observed between the different research categories (theoretical development, applied research and introspective). Finally, the main limitation found is in restricting the search of keywords exclusively to the field "title" of the documents as well as those deficiencies that can be generated in the records of the databases themselves. [EN] Understanding the scientific and social structure of a discipline is a fundamental aspect for scientific evaluation processes, identifying trends and niches, and balancing the trade-off between exploitation and exploration in research. In the present contribution, the production of doctoral theses is used as a proxy to analyze the scientific structure of the knowledge area of business organization in Spain. To that end, a complex networks approach is selected, and two different networks are built: (i) the social network of co-participation in thesis examining committees and thesis supervision, and (ii) a bipartite network of theses and thesis descriptors. The former has a modular structure that is partially explained by thematic specialization in different subdisciplines. The latter serves to assess the interdisciplinary structure of the discipline, as it enables the characterization of affinity levels between fields, research poles and thematic clusters. Our results have implications for the scientific evaluation and formal definition of related fields., The authors acknowledge financial support from the and Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation Universities (RED2018-102518-T), the Spanish State Research Agency (PID2020118906GB-I00 and PID2020-119894GB-I00 via AEI/10.13039/501100011033), the Junta de Castilla y León – Consejería de Educación (BU055P20), Fundación La Caixa (2020/00062/001) and from NVIDIA Corporation and its donation of the TITAN Xp GPUs that facilitated this research. Bielefeld : transcript Verlag 2023, 269 S. - (Pedagogy) - (Dissertation, Universität Fribourg, 2022), Switzerland is known for its multilingualism, yet not all languages are represented equally in society. The situation is exacerbated by the influx of heritage languages and English through migration and globalization processes which challenge the traditional education system. This study is the first to investigate how schools in Grisons, Fribourg, and Zurich negotiate neoliberal forces leading to a growing necessity of English, a romanticized view on national languages, and the social justice perspective of institutionalizing heritage languages. It uncovers power and legitimacy issues and showcases students' and teachers' complex identities to advocate equitable multilingual education. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.), The unanimous results of standardized research on the career choice of student teachers indicate the desire to work with children as a central motive of (prospective) teachers for their career choice. Pragmatic, but equally obvious motivations such as a secure job, good wages, holidays or family-friendliness, seem to be negligible. In contrast, the present study attempts to shed light not so much on the explicitly mentioned rational reasons, but rather on immanent or latent motivations for choosing the teaching profession. The spotlight is not on the front stage of the manifest career choice motives, but on the back stage of the social influences on career-related orientations. Pierre Bourdieu's concept of the dialectic of habitus and field is used to explore career choice. Using the so-called “Sequenzanalytische Habitusrekonstruktion” (sequence-analytical habitus reconstruction), which follows Bourdieu's concepts, job-related, problem-centered interviews show the great importance of the individualized habitus for job-related orientations and the (unconscious) career choice strategies of student teachers. Likewise, the implicit teacher images and the anticipated teacher behavior of the students come to light. On the one hand, the study contributes to teacher training by revealing the illusio and social order of students, their professional orientations, and their subjective job profiles, thus holding up a mirror to teacher education. On the other hand, this thesis also claims to explore the phenomenon of career choice from a perspective that has so far not been illuminated. Thus, a necessary double fit for the students becomes recognizable – a fit to the requirement logic of the field of origin as well as to the requirements logic of the aspired professional field of arrival. (DIPF/Orig.), Using an emancipatory approach to historical learning, agency is emphasized as a goal for academic language learning in history classes. Furthermore, the professionalization of history teachers for academic language learning is examined. Planning conversations of history lessons that include academic language learning are analyzed empirically. The results show that students find it discernibly difficult to think of academic language and historical learning together. For this reason, a framework model of academic language learning with an emancipatory approach is developed. It is of importance for the professionalization of history teachers since it answers the fundamental question of how to implement academic language learning in history classes. (DIPF/Orig.)
