Abstract

A single vertical beam halo collimation system has been installed in ATF2 in March 2016 to reduce the background in the IP and Post-IP region. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental program carried out during 2016 in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the vertical collimation system and measure the wakefields induced by such a system. Furthermore, a comparison of the measurements of the collimation system wakefield impact with CST PS numerical simulations and analytical calculations is also presented., Proceedings of the 8th Int. Abstract

The IFIC High-Gradient (HG) Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory is designed to host a high-power infrastructure for testing HG S-band normal-conducting RF accelerating structures and has been under construction since 2016. The main objective of the facility is to develop HG S-band accelerating structures and to contribute to the study of HG phenomena. A particular focus is RF structures for medical hadron therapy applications. The design of the laboratory has been made through collaboration between the IFIC and the CLIC RF group at CERN. The layout is inspired by the scheme of the Xbox-3 test facility at CERN, and it has been adapted to S-band frequency. Abstract

In the framework of the PACMAN project we have developed a test set-up to measure the electromagnetic centre of high gradient accelerating structures for alignment purposes. We have demonstrated with previous simulation studies that a resolution of 1 m is possible. The improvements applied on the technique and on the set-up, calibrations and the equipment instrumentation allows the measurement of the electromagnetic centre, with a final precision of 1.09 m in the horizontal plane and 0.58 m in the vertical plane. The experimental measurements and the simulation studies as a support to justify the numbers obtained are presented and discussed., Proceedings of the 8th Int. Abstract

In this paper we study the discrepancy found between the wakefield impact effect induced by a rectangular tapered collimator prototype for ATF2 calculated using analytical models, calculated from CST PS numerical simulations and implemented in the tracking code PLACET v1.0.0. In order to get consistent results between the analytical calculations, CST PS simulations and the tracking code PLACET v1.0.0 the collimator wakefield module in PLACET v1.0.0 has to be modified. The changes have been implemented in the tracking code PLACET v1.0.1.

Abstract

In order to reduce the background that could limit the precision of the diagnostics located in the ATF2 post-IP beamline, a single vertical beam halo collimation system was installed in March 2016. In this paper we present the measurements done in March and May 2016 in order to characterize the collimation system performance. Furthermore, the collimator wakefield impact has also been measured and compared with theoretical calculations and numerical simulations in order to determine the most efficient operation mode of the collimation system in terms of halo cleaning and negligible wakefield impact., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Abstract

The international Future Circular Collider (FCC) study is designing hadron, lepton and lepton-hadron colliders based on a new 100 km tunnel in the Geneva region. The main focus and ultimate goal of the study are high-luminosity proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 100 TeV, using 16 T Nb3Sn dipole magnets. Specific FCC beam dynamics issues are related to the large circumference, the high brightness - made available by radiation damping -, the small geometric emittance, unprecedented collision energy and luminosity, the huge amount of energy stored in the beam, large synchrotron radiation power, plus the injection scenarios. The Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK is a prototype of the final focus system for the next generation of Future Linear Colliders(FCL). Abstract

Direct Higgs production in e⁺e⁻ collisions at the FCC is of interest if the centre-of-mass energy spread can be reduced by at least an order of magnitude. A mono-chromatization scheme, to accomplish this, can be realized with horizontal dispersion of opposite sign for the two colliding beams at the interaction point (IP). We review approaches from historical mono-chromatization studies, then derive a set of IP parameters which would provide the required performance in FCC e⁺e⁻ collisions at 63 GeV beam energy, compare these with the baseline optics parameters at neighbouring energies (45.6 and 80 GeV), comment on the effect of beamstrahlung, and, finally, discuss the modifications of the FCC-ee final-focus optics needed to obtain the required parameters., Proceedings of the 7th Int. The proposed CERN FCC-hh proton-proton collider will operate at unprecedented per-particle (50 TeV) and total stored beam energies (8.4 GJ). These high energies create the requirement for an efficient collimation system in order to protect the accelerator components and experiments. Abstract

To achieve a high accelerating gradient of 100 MV/m, the CLIC project under study at CERN uses a 23 cm long tapered normal-conducting travelling wave Accelerating Structure (AS) operating at 12 GHz. Minimisation of the long-range wakefields (WF) is assured by damping of the HOM through four radial waveguides in each cell without distorting the accelerating mode. As an extension of them, there are four bent waveguides called WF monitors (WFM) in the middle cell with two RF pick-ups. To obtain a small beam emittance in the collision point, micro-metric pre-alignment of the AS is required. We work to find the electrical centre of the AS through the use of the asymmetry in the RF scattering parameters created by an off-centre conductive wire, stretched along the axis. The accuracy required is of 7 μm with a resolution of 3.5 μm for the WFM signals including the acquisition electronics. Our simulations have shown that a resolution of 1 μm is possible using a calibrated VNA. Abstract

The CLIC project, currently under study at CERN is an electron-positron collider at 3 TeV centre-of-mass energy and luminosity of 2*1034 cm⁻²s^{−1}. Achieving such luminosity requires a beam dimension of 1 nm in the vertical plane and high beam stability. The TD24 is a traveling wave structure operating at 12 GHz designed to reach 100 MV/m at constant gradient. It consists of two coupling cells and 24 disks. The RF is coupled from cell to cell though an iris of 5.5 mm. To minimize the occurrence of wake-fields and minimize the emittance growth Δεy below 5%, the pre-alignment precision of the electrical centre of the accelerating structure (AS) on its support has to be better than 7 μm. Following, the AS is actively aligned with beam using the wake-field monitor (WFM) signals, with a resolution of 3.5 μm. A test bench for laboratory measurements has been designed and exploits the asymmetry created by RF scattering parameters of an off-centre conductive wire, stretched to locate the electromagnetic centre of the AS. Abstract

The Pre-Damping Rings (PDRs) and Damping Rings (DRs) of CLIC are required to reduce the beam emittances to the small values required for the main linacs. The injection and extraction, from the PDRs and DRs, are performed by kicker systems. To achieve both low beam coupling impedance and reasonable broadband impedance matching to the electrical circuit, striplines have been chosen for the kicker elements. Prototype striplines have been built: tests and measurements of these striplines have started. The goal of these tests is to characterize, without beam, the electromagnetic response of the striplines. The tests have been carried out at CERN. To study the signal transmission through the striplines, the measured S-parameters have been compared with simulations. In addition, measurements of longitudinal beam coupling impedance, using the coaxial wire method, are reported and compared with simulations., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Abstract

The post-linac energy collimation system of CLIC is designed to fulfill an essential function of protection of the Beam Delivery System (BDS) against miss-steered beams generated by failure modes in the main linac. Guaranteeing the collimator survivability in case of direct beam impact is very challenging, if we take into account the need to deal with an unprecedented transverse beam energy density per beam of the order of GJ/mm². This translates into a high damage potential of uncontrolled beams. In this paper we present an alternative nonlinear energy collimation system as a potential solution to guarantee the survival of the collimators. The performance and error tolerances of this system are studied by means of beam tracking simulations, and compared with those of the conventional baseline CLIC energy collimation system., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Abstract

In this paper we review the status of the studies on nonlinear collimation schemes for the LHC. Concretely we describe the design of a nonlinear optics for betatron cleaning in IR7. The aim is to investigate alternative nonlinear collimation systems to reduce the collimator-induced impedance that may limit the beam intensity towards the LHC luminosity upgrade. The performance of the LHC nonlinear collimation system is studied by means of tracking simulations and compared with the present LHC system. Abstract

Precise and fast beam size measurement and emittance reconstruction in the different subsystems and transfer lines of the Future Linear Colliders (ILC and CLIC) will be essential for beam tuning in order to achieve the required luminosity. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using a multi-Optical Transition Radiation (m-OTR) system for fast transverse beam size measurement, emittance reconstruction and coupling correction in the Ring to Main Linac (RTML) of the FLCs. Diagnostic sections of the RTML have been matched to the optimum optical conditions for emittance reconstruction. Abstract

Beam halo hitting on the beam pipe after the Interaction Point (IP) can generate a large amount of background for the measurements of the nano meter beam size using the laser interferometer beam size monitor (Shintake monitor) at ATF2. In order to investigate the beam halo transverse distribution, a diamond detector will be installed downstream of the IP. A feasibility study of a transverse halo collimation system to reduce the background for these measurements is also in progress. Prior to the diamond detector installation, a first attempt of beam halo measurements have been performed in 2013 using the currently installed wire scanners. Modeling of the beam halo distribution in the extraction (EXT) line was done and compared with the old modeling for ATF. Beam halo measurements were also done using the post-IP wire scanner to investigate the beam halo distribution at post-IP., Proceedings of the 5th Int. Abstract

This paper presents the design of a halo collimation system for the ATF2 beamline. The main objective is the reduction of background noise that limits the performance of key diagnostic devices around the final focal point (IP), especially the Shintake Monitor (IPBSM) used for measuring the nanometer level vertical beam sizes and the future Diamond Sensor (DS) for measuring the beam halo. Beam tracking simulations have been performed to optimize the position and characteristics of the halo collimation devices. Abstract

We study the feasibility of using a multi-Optical Transition Radiation (mOTR) system for fast transverse emittance reconstruction and x-y coupling correction in the Ring to Main Linac (RTML) of the future linear colliders: ILC and CLIC. OTR monitors are mature and reliable diagnostic tools that could be very suitable for the setup and tuning of the machine in single-bunch mode. Here we study the requirements for a mOTR system adapted to the optical conditions and beam parameters of the RTML of both the ILC and CLIC.

Abstract

Performance limiting high-power rf phenomenon occur in both transmitter systems in satellites and high-gradient accelerating structures in particle accelerators. In satellites the predominant effect is multipactor while in accelerators it is breakdown. Both communities have studied their respective phenomena extensively and developed particular simulation tools and experimental techniques. A series of experiments to directly compare measurements made under multipactor and breakdown conditions has been initiated with the objective to crosscheck and compare the physics, simulation tools and measurement techniques.

Abstract

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational condition s into account. Abstract

In this paper we describe the design, installation and first calibration tests of a Multi Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) monitor system in the beam diagnostic section of the Extraction (EXT) line of ATF2, close to the multi wire scanner system. This system will be a valuable tool for measuring beam sizes and emittances from the ATF Damping Ring (DR). With an optical resolution of about 2 um an original OTR design demonstrated the ability to measure a 5.5um beam size in one beam pulse and to take many fast measurements. This gives the OTR the ability to measure the beam emittance with high statistics, giving a low error and a good understanding of emittance jitter. Furthermore the near by wire scanners will be a definitive test of the OTR as a beam emittance diagnostic device. Abstract

The collimation system of a Linear Collider must serve multiple purposes and fulfill a number of constraints. In particular, we require that the collimation system should sustain the impact of off-energy bunches and have a large chromatic bandwidth, in addition to ensuring a high collimation efficiency and tolerable wake fields. We describe the design of a nonlinear energy collimation system for CLIC at 3 TeV, in which skew sextupoles are used to blow up the vertical beam size at the spoiler, so as to guarantee collimator survival in case of beam impact. Its properties, like chromatic bandwidth and collimation survival, are evaluated and compared with those of the baseline linear collimation system.

Abstract

In 2003 and 2004 nonlinear chromaticity, amplitude detuning, chromatic phase advance, resonance driving terms and off-energy orbits were measured in the CERN SPS at 14 GeV/c and 26 GeV/c, respectively. From the nonlinear chromaticity, the SPS optics model has been updated, by adjusting the strength of nonlinear field errors in dipoles and quadrupoles. Furthermore, we have added to the model the effect of the displacement of all main bends and the voluntary misalignments of all the other elements of the machine. We compare the field errors with those founded in 2002, 2001 and 2000. The tune shifts with transverse amplitude, driving terms, etc., predicted by this nonlinear optics model are compared with direct measurements.

Abstract

In 2002, nonlinear chromaticity, coupling, amplitude-dependent detuning, chromatic phase advance, resonance driving terms, and off-energy orbits were measured in the CERN SPS at 26 GeV/c. The optics model has been updated by adjusting the strengths of nonlinear field errors in the dipoles and quadrupoles, so as to reproduce the measured nonlinear chromaticity. We compare the field errors deduced in 2002, measuring over a larger momentum range, with those found in 2001 and 2000. The resolution is improved by averaging over all turn-by-turn position monitors in the ring instead of using a single dedicated pick up ('tune meter'). Computations using two different optics codes, MAD and SAD, indicate the sensitivity to matching algorithm and magnet representation. To validate the nonlinear optics model, the predicted tune shifts with transverse amplitude, driving terms of low-order resonance, etc., are compared with direct measurements.

Abstract

The CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN was constructed by the CTF3 collaboration to study the feasibility of the concepts for a compact linear collider. The test beam line (TBL) recently added to the CTF3 machine was designed to study the CLIC decelerator beam dynamics and 12 GHz power production. The beam line consists of a FODO lattice with high precision BPM’s and quadrupoles on movers for precise beam alignment. A total of 16 Power Extraction and Transfer Structures (PETS) will be installed in between the quadrupoles to extract 12 GHz power from the drive beam provided by the CTF3 machine. The CTF3 drive beam with a bunchtrain length of 140 ns, 12 GHz bunch repetition frequency and an average current over the train of up to 28 A will be injected into the test beam line. Each PETS structure will produce 135 MW of 12 GHz power at nominal current. The beam will have lost more than 50 % of its initial energy of 150 MeV at the end of the beam line and will contain particles with energies between 65 MeV and 150 MeV. The beam line is completely installed and the PETS structures will be successively added until the end of 2011. Abstract

In this deliverable we report an overview of the possible injector options suitable to match the CompactLight X-band high brightness linac able to drive short wavelength FELs user facilities. Different schemes have been investigated including RF gun injectors at different operating frequency (S, C and X band) and a DC gun based design. The electromagnetic and RF designs for all cases are reported and discussed, including a preliminary evaluation of the laser/cathode system requirements. Matchings with the downstream linac are also investigated with beam dynamics simulations. State of the art S-band injectors look appropriate to achieve the required parameters at low repetition rate ( 100 Hz). On the other end a compact C-band (or X-band) RF gun design is expected to have even better performances at low repetition rates and moreover, due to the lower thermal load, could allow higher repetition rates operation, up to 1 kHz, with acceptable performances degradation. DC guns are also very promising solutions for kHz range operation.

Abstract

An S-Band High-Gradient (HG) Radio Frequency (RF) laboratory is under construction and commissioning at IFIC. The purpose of the laboratory is to perform investigations of high-gradient phenomena and to develop normal-conducting RF technology, with special focus on RF systems for hadron-therapy. The layout of the facility is derived from the scheme of the Xbox-3 test facility at CERN* and uses medium peak-power (7.5 MW) and high repetition rate (400 Hz) klystrons, whose RF output is combined to drive two testing slots to the required power. The design and construction of the various components of the system started in 2016 and has been completed. The installation and commissioning of the laboratory is progressing, with first results expected before mid 2018. Abstract

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is now under consideration as the next global project in particle physics. In this report, we review of all aspects of the ILC program: the physics motivation, the accelerator design, the run plan, the proposed detectors, the experimental measurements on the Higgs boson, the top quark, the couplings of the W and Z bosons, and searches for new particles. We review the important role that polarized beams play in the ILC program. The first stage of the ILC is planned to be a Higgs factory at 250 GeV in the centre of mass. Energy upgrades can naturally be implemented based on the concept of a linear collider. We discuss in detail the ILC program of Higgs boson measurements and the expected precision in the determination of Higgs couplings. We compare the ILC capabilities to those of the HL-LHC and to those of other proposed e+e- Higgs factories. We emphasize throughout that the readiness of the accelerator and the estimates of ILC performance are based on detailed simulations backed by extensive RandD and, for the accelerator technology, operational experience.

The understanding and control of the transverse beam halo distributions is an important issue to reduce sources of background noise in Future Linear Colliders (FLC) and specifically at ATF2. Abstract

Beam halo transverse distribution measurements are of great importance for the understanding of background sources of the nano-meter beam size monitor at the interaction point (IPBSM) of ATF2. One of the most critical issues for the beam halo measurement is to reach high dynamic range. Two in vacuum diamond sensor beam halo scanners (DSv) with four strips each have been developed for the investigation of beam halo transverse distributions at ATF2. The first DSv was installed for horizontal beam halo scanning after the interaction point (IP) of ATF2, in Nov. 2014. It aims to measure the beam halo distribution with large dynamic range (~10⁶), and investigate the possibility of probing the Compton recoil electrons produced in the interaction with the IPBSM laser beams. Abstract

A large, world-wide community of physicists is working to realise an exceptional physics program of energy-frontier, electron-positron collisions with the International Linear Collider (ILC). This program will begin with a central focus on high-precision and model-independent measurements of the Higgs boson couplings. This method of searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model is orthogonal to and complements the LHC physics program. The ILC at 250 GeV will also search for direct new physics in exotic Higgs decays and in pair-production of weakly interacting particles. Polarised electron and positron beams add unique opportunities to the physics reach. The ILC can be upgraded to higher energy, enabling precision studies of the top quark and measurement of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs self-coupling. The key accelerator technology, superconducting radio-frequency cavities, has matured. Optimised collider and detector designs, and associated physics analyses, were presented in the ILC Technical Design Report, signed by 2400 scientists. There is a strong interest in Japan to host this international effort. A detailed review of the many aspects of the project is nearing a conclusion in Japan. Now the Japanese government is preparing for a decision on the next phase of international negotiations, that could lead to a project start within a few years. The potential timeline of the ILC project includes an initial phase of about 4 years to obtain international agreements, complete engineering design and prepare construction, and form the requisite international collaboration, followed by a construction phase of 9 years.

Abstract

The PRAE (Platform for Research and Applications with Electrons) accelerator is being built at Orsay campus with the main objective of creating a multidisciplinary R platform, involving subatomic physics, instrumentation, radiobiology and clinical research around a high-performance electron accelerator with beam energies up to 70 MeV (planned 140 MeV). In this paper we will report the optics design and beam dynamics simulations for the beam line dedicated to subatomic physics, more specifically for the measurement of the proton radius. This measurement requires extremely low energy spread (5×10−4) and small beam sizes with low divergence at three beam energies: 30, 50 and 70 MeV. The beam line includes a D-type chicane coupled to a dechirping passive structure, which generates inductive wakefields in order to get the performances required for such measurement., Proceedings of the 10th Int. Abstract

The International Linear Collider (ILC) being proposed in Japan is an electron-positron linear collider with an initial energy of 250 GeV. The ILC accelerator is based on the technology of superconducting radio-frequency cavities. This technology has reached a mature stage in the European XFEL project and is now widely used. The ILC will start by measuring the Higgs properties, providing high-precision and model-independent determinations of its parameters. The ILC at 250 GeV will also search for direct new physics in exotic Higgs decays and in pair-production of weakly interacting particles. The use of polarised electron and positron beams opens new capabilities and scenarios that add to the physics reach. The ILC can be upgraded to higher energy, enabling precision studies of the top quark and measurement of the top Yukawa coupling and the Higgs self-coupling. The international -- including European -- interest for the project is very strong. Europe has participated in the ILC project since its early conception and plays a major role in its present development covering most of its scientific and technological aspects: physics studies, accelerator and detectors. The potential for a wide participation of European groups and laboratories is thus high, including important opportunities for European industry. Following decades of technical development, R&D;, and design optimisation, the project is ready for construction and the European particle physics community, technological centers and industry are prepared to participate in this challenging endeavour.

Abstract

The CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN was constructed by the CTF3 collaboration to study the feasibility of the concepts for a compact linear collider. The test beam line (TBL) recently added to the CTF3 machine was designed to study the CLIC decelerator beam dynamics and 12 GHz power production. The beam line consists of a FODO lattice with high precision BPM’s and quadrupoles on movers for precise beam alignment. A total of 16 Power Extraction and Transfer Structures (PETS) will be installed in between the quadrupoles to extract 12 GHz power from the drive beam provided by the CTF3 machine. The CTF3 drive beam with a bunchtrain length of 140 ns, 12 GHz bunch repetition frequency and an average current over the train of up to 28 A will be injected into the test beam line. Each PETS structure will produce 135 MW of 12 GHz power at nominal current. The beam will have lost more than 50 % of its initial energy of 150 MeV at the end of the beam line and will contain particles with energies between 65 MeV and 150 MeV. The beam line is completely installed and the PETS structures will be successively added until the end of 2011. The paper will describe the first results obtained during commissioning of the beam line and the first PETS prototype.

Abstract

The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large international scientific facility proposed by the Chinese particle physics community to explore the Higgs boson and provide critical tests of the underlying fundamental physics principles of the Standard Model that might reveal new physics. The CEPC, to be hosted in China in a circular underground tunnel of approximately 100 km in circumference, is designed to operate as a Higgs factory producing electron-positron collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 240 GeV. The collider will also operate at around 91.2 GeV, as a Z factory, and at the WW production threshold (around 160 GeV). The CEPC will produce close to one trillion Z bosons, 100 million W bosons and over one million Higgs bosons. The vast amount of bottom quarks, charm quarks and tau-leptons produced in the decays of the Z bosons also makes the CEPC an effective B-factory and tau-charm factory. The CEPC will have two interaction points where two large detectors will be located. This document is the second volume of the CEPC Conceptual Design Report (CDR). It presents the physics case for the CEPC, describes conceptual designs of possible detectors and their technological options, highlights the expected detector and physics performance, and discusses future plans for detector R&D and physics investigations. The final CEPC detectors will be proposed and built by international collaborations but they are likely to be composed of the detector technologies included in the conceptual designs described in this document. Abstract

A set of 16 Inductive Pick-Ups (IPU) for Beam Position Monitoring (BPM) with its associated electronics were designed, constructed and characterized at IFIC for the Test Beam Line (TBL) of the 3rd CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN. In October 2009 the full set of IPUs, (BPS) was successfully installed in the TBL line. In this paper, we describe the prototyping and series production phases of the BPSs development, focusing in the implementation and the results analysis derived from their characterization tests. Two special test benches were designed and built to perform the characterization tests at low and high frequencies. The low frequency set up based on a wire-method test bench for emulating the beam position variations helped us to determine the BPS performance parameters at beam pulse time scale from 100μs/10kHz to 10ns/100MHz. On the other hand, the high frequency test setup, based on an adapted coaxial transmission line, was dedicated to obtain the BPS longitudinal coupling impedance at the beam microbunches time scale (83ps/12GHz). Abstract

El objetivo principal de esta tesis consiste en desarrollar un metodo para medir los terminos resonantes del Hamiltoniano de un acelerador mediante la transfomada de Fourier de la posicion del haz vuelta tras vuelta. Dos aspectos fundamentales de este metodo de medida son: el efecto de la decoherencia del haz en el espectro de Fourier y la variacion longitudinal de estos terminos resonantes. Ambos se estudian analiticamente y mediante simulaciones numericas. Con el fin de probar la validez de esta tecnica se realizaron experimentos en dos aceleradores de hadrones: el SPS del CERN y el RHIC del BNL. Por ultimo se estudia como utilizar dipolos AC para que esta tecnica no sea destructiva, The aim of this thesis is to develop a beam based method to measure the Hamiltonian terms of an accelerator by precise Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of turn-by-turn beam position data. The effect of beam decoherence on the turn-by-turn Fourier spectrum and the longitudinal variation of the resonance terms are studied analytically and via computer simulations. Experiments to validate the proposed technique are performed at the CERN SPS and at the RHIC of BNL. Finally, the improvement of replacing the single kicks by an AC dipole is analytically described

Abstract

The field of hadrontherapy has grown rapidly in recent years. At present the therapeutic beam is provided by a cyclotron or a synchrotron, but neither cyclotrons nor synchrotrons present the best performances for hadrontherapy. The new generation of accelerators for hadrontherapy should allow fast active energy modulation and have a high repetition rate, so that moving organs can be appropriately treated in a reasonable time. In addition, a reduction of the dimensions and cost of the accelerators for hadrontherapy would make the acquisition and operation of a hadrontherapy facility more affordable, which would translate into great benefits for the potential hadrontherapy patients. The 'cyclinac', an accelerator concept that combines a cyclotron with a high-frequency linear accelerator (linac), is a fast-cycling machine specifically conceived to allow for fast active energy modulation. The present paper focuses on CABOTO (CArbon BOoster for Therapy in Oncology), a compact, efficient high-frequency linac that can accelerate C(6+) ions and H2 molecules from 150-410 MeV/u in ∼24 m. The paper presents the latest design of CABOTO and discusses its performances.
