Search

The possible existence of a sign-changing gap symmetry in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$-derived superconductors (SC) has been an exciting topic of research in the last few years. To further investigate this subject we combine Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and pressure-dependent transport measurements to investigate magnetic pair-breaking effects on BaFe$_{1.9}M_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($M=$ Mn, Co, Cu, and Ni) single crystals. An ESR signal, indicative of the presence of localized magnetic moments, is observed only for $M=$ Cu and Mn compounds, which display very low SC transition temperature ($T_{c}$) and no SC, respectively. From the ESR analysis assuming the absence of bottleneck effects, the microscopic parameters are extracted to show that this reduction of $T_{c}$ cannot be accounted by the Abrikosov-Gorkov pair-breaking expression for a sign-preserving gap function. Our results reveal an unconventional spin- and pressure-dependent pair-breaking effect and impose strong constraints on the pairing symmetry of these materials.

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) experiments of diluted Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the claimed topological insulator (TI) YBiPt are reported. Powdered samples with grain size from $\approx$ 100 $\mu$m to $\approx$ 2,000 $\mu$m were investigated. At low temperatures, 1.6 K $\lesssim$ \emph{T} $\lesssim$ 20 K, the X-band ($9.4$ GHz) ESR spectra show a \emph{g}-value of 2.66(4) and a Dysonian resonance lineshape which shows a remarkably unusual temperature, concentration, microwave power and particle size dependence. These results indicate that metallic and insulating behavior coexist within a skin depth of $\delta \approx$ 15 $\mu$m. Furthermore, the Nd$^{3+}$ spin dynamics in YBiPt are consistent with the existence of a \emph{phonon-bottleneck process} which allows the energy absorbed by the Nd$^{3+}$ ions at resonance to reach the thermal bath via the conduction electrons in the metallic surface states of YBiPt. We present magnetization, specific heat, resistivity, and Hall effect measurements on the cubic B20 phase of MnGe and CoGe and compare to measurements of isostructural FeGe and electronic structure calculations. In MnGe, we observe a transition to a magnetic state at $T_c=275$ K as identified by a sharp peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, as well as second phase transition at lower temperature that becomes apparent only at finite magnetic field. We discover two phase transitions in the specific heat at temperatures much below the Curie temperature one of which we associate with changes to the magnetic structure. A magnetic field reduces the temperature of this transition which corresponds closely to the sharp peak observed in the ac susceptibility at fields above 5 kOe. The second of these transitions is not affected by the application of field and has no signature in the magnetic properties or our crystal structure parameters. Transport measurements indicate that MnGe is metal with a negative magnetoresistance similar to that seen in isostructural FeGe and MnSi. Hall effect measurements reveal a carrier concentration of about 0.5 carriers per formula unit also similar to that found in FeGe and MnSi. CoGe is shown to be a low carrier density metal with a very small, nearly temperature independent diamagnetic susceptibility., Comment: 16 pages 23 figures

In this work, we combined magnetization, pressure dependent electrical resistivity, heat-capacity, 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering experiments to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound. Our single crystals show an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ~ 16 K and the magnetic properties indicate that this compound is an Ising antiferromagnet. In particular, the low temperature magnetization data revealed a spin-flop transition at T = 5 K when magnetic fields about 5.5 T are applied along the c-axis. Moreover, the X-ray magnetic diffraction data below TN revealed a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation wavevector (0 0 1/2) with the Ce^3+ moments oriented along the c-axis. Furthermore, our heat capacity, pressure dependent resistivity and temperature dependent 63Cu NMR data suggest that CeCuBi2 exhibits a weak heavy fermion behavior with strongly localized Ce^3+ 4f electrons. We thus discuss a scenario taking into account the anisotropic magnetic interaction between the Ce^3+ ions along with the tetragonal crystalline electric field effects in CeCuBi2., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

In four classes of materials, the layered copper-oxides, organics, iron-pnictides and heavy-fermion compounds, an unconventional superconducting state emerges as a magnetic transition is tuned toward absolute zero temperature, that is, toward a magnetic quantum-critical point (QCP). In most materials, the QCP is accessed by chemical substitutions or applied pressure. CeCoIn5 is one of the few materials that are born as a quantum-critical superconductor and, therefore, offers the opportunity to explore the consequences of chemical disorder. Cadmium-doped crystals of CeCoIn5 are a particularly interesting case where Cd substitution induces long-range magnetic order, as in Zn-doped copper-oxides. Applied pressure globally supresses the Cd-induced magnetic order and restores bulk superconductivity. Here we show, however, that local magnetic correlations, whose spatial extent decreases with applied pressure, persist at the extrapolated QCP. The residual droplets of impurity-induced magnetic moments prevent the reappearance of conventional signatures of quantum criticality, but induce a heterogeneous electronic state. These discoveries show that spin droplets can be a source of electronic heterogeneity in classes of strongly correlated electron systems and emphasize the need for caution when interpreting the effects of tuning a correlated system by chemical substitution., Comment: main text and supplementary information

We report on a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the iron pnictide LaFe$_2$P$_2$. Our extensive density-functional band-structure calculations can well explain the measured angular-dependent dHvA frequencies. As salient feature, we observe only one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface sheet, i.e., a hole-like Fermi-surface cylinder around $\Gamma$, essential for $s_\pm$ pairing, is missing. In spite of considerable mass enhancements due to many-body effects, LaFe$_2$P$_2$ shows no superconductivity. To investigate whether the dense Kondo compound CeB6 might evolve into a topological insulator under sufficient pressure, four-point electrical resistivity measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 1.3 K to 295 K in a diamond anvil cell to 122 GPa. The temperature of the resistivity maximum initially increases slowly with pressure but disappears between 12 and 20 GPa. The marked changes observed under pressure suggest that a valence and/or structural transition may have occurred. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements, however, fail to detect any change in crystal structure to 85 GPa. Although a transition into an insulating phase is not observed, this dense Kondo system is completely suppressed at 43 GPa, leaving behind what appears to be a conventional Fermi liquid metal., Comment: improved figure format to submit/0984134

We report the synthesis of EuPtIn$_{4}$ single crystalline platelets by the In-flux technique. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm structure with lattice parameters $a=4.542(1)$ \AA, $b=16.955(2)$ \AA$\,$ and $c=7.389(1)$ \AA. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and electron spin resonance (ESR) reveal that EuPtIn$_{4}$ is a metallic Curie-Weiss paramagnet at high temperatures and presents antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below $T_{N}=13.3$ K. In addition, we observe a successive anomaly at $T^{*} = 12.6$ K and a spin-flop transition at $H_{c} \sim 2.5$ T applied along the $ac$-plane. In the paramagnetic state, a single Eu$^{2+}$ Dysonian ESR line with a Korringa relaxation rate of $b = 4.1(2)$ Oe/K is observed. Interestingly, even at high temperatures, both ESR linewidth and electrical resistivity reveal a similar anisotropy. We discuss a possible common microscopic origin for the observed anisotropy in these physical quantities likely associated with an anisotropic magnetic interaction between Eu$^{2+}$ 4$f$ electrons mediated by conduction electrons., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Quantum oscillation measurements can provide important information about the Fermi surface (FS) properties of strongly correlated metals. Here, we report a Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect study on the pnictide parent compounds EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (Eu122) and BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (Ba122) grown by In-flux. Although both members are isovalent compounds with approximately the same density of states at the Fermi level, our results reveal subtle changes in their fermiology. Eu122 displays a complex pattern in the Fourier spectrum, with band splitting, magnetic breakdown orbits, and effective masses sistematically larger when compared to Ba122, indicating that the former is a more correlated metal. Moreover, the observed pockets in Eu122 are more isotropic and 3D-like, suggesting an equal contribution from the Fe $3d$ orbitals to the FS. The role of orbital differentiation on the emergence of superconductivity in the Fe-based superconductors remains an open question to the scientific community. In this investigation, we employ a suitable microscopic spin probe technique, namely Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), to investigate this issue on selected chemically substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. As the spin-density wave (SDW) phase is suppressed, we observe a clear increase of the Fe 3$d$ bands anisotropy along with their localization at the FeAs plane. Such an increase of the planar orbital content interestingly occurs independently on the chemical substitution responsible for suppressing the SDW phase. As a consequence, the magnetic fluctuations combined with the resultant particular symmetry of the Fe 3$d$ bands are propitious ingredients to the emergence of superconductivity in this class of materials., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Systematic transport measurements have been performed on a series of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) thin films with varying degrees of anisotropic strain. The strain is induced via epitaxial growth on NdGaO3(001) substrates and varied by controlling the thermal annealing time. An antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) state, possibly associated with charge ordering, emerges upon thermal annealing. The Hall effect in these materials exhibits features that are indicative of a percolative phase transition and correlate closely with the emergence of the AFI state. In the paramagnetic phase, the Hall resistivity takes on two slopes in all samples: a decreasing negative slope with increasing temperature at low fields, which is attributed to the carrier hopping motion, and an almost temperature independent positive slope at high fields due to diffusive transport of holes. Significantly, the crossover fields of the Hall resistivity slope at different temperatures correspond to the same magnetization, which is interpreted as the critical point of a magnetic field-driven percolative phase transition. At lower temperatures near the zero-field metal-insulator transition, pronounced enhancement of the Hall coefficient with the development of the AFI state is observed. The enhancement peaks near the magnetic field-driven percolation; its magnitude correlates with the strength of the AFI state and is suppressed with the melting of the AFI state by an in-plane magnetic field. The observations resemble many features of the enhancement of the Hall coefficient in granular metal films near the composition-driven percolation.

Taken together and viewed holistically, recent theory, low temperature (T) transport, photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum oscillation experiments have built a very strong case that the paradigmatic mixed valence insulator SmB6 is currently unique as a three-dimensional strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). As such, its many-body T-dependent bulk gap brings an extra richness to the physics beyond that of the weakly correlated TI materials. How will the robust, symmetry-protected TI surface states evolve as the gap closes with increasing T? For SmB6 exploiting this opportunity first requires resolution of other important gap-related issues, its origin, its magnitude, its T-dependence and its role in bulk transport. Possible topological nature of Kondo and mixed valence insulators has been a recent topic of interest in condensed matter physics. Attention has focused on SmB6, which has long been known to exhibit low temperature transport anomaly, whose origin is of independent interest. We argue that it is possible to resolve the topological nature of surface states by uniquely accessing the surface electronic structure of the low temperature anomalous transport regime through combining state-of-the-art laser- and synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with or without spin resolution. A combination of low temperature and ultra-high resolution (laser) which is lacking in previous ARPES studies of this compound is the key to resolve the possible existence of topological surface state in SmB6. Here we outline an experimental algorithm to systematically explore the topological versus trivial or mixed (topological and trivial surface state admixture as in the first 3D TI Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$) nature of the surface states in Kondo and mixed valence insulators. We conclude based on this methodology that the observed topology of the surface Fermi surface in our low temperature data considered within the level of current resolution is consistent with the theoretically predicted topological picture, suggesting a topological origin of the dominant in-gap ARPES signal in SmB6.}, Comment: 15 pages, 6 Figures, Submitted June'13; Published as SI in Nature Commun. 4, 2991 (2013)

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$ and EuFe$_2$P$_2$. We observed doubled core level peaks associated to the pnictide atoms, which are related to a surface state. Nevertheless, strong electronic dispersion along the $c$ axis, especially pronounced in EuFe$_2$P$_2$, is observed for at less one band, thus indicated that the Fe states, albeit probably affected at the surface, do not form pure two-dimensional surface states. However, this latter material shows reduced spectral weight near the Fermi level as compared to EuFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$. An anomalous jump is also found in the electronic states associated with the Eu$^{2+}$ $f$ states in EuFe$_2$P$_2$., Comment: RevTex. 6 pages, 5 figures

We present results of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STS) measurements on the "Kondo insulator" SmB$_6$. The vast majority of surface areas investigated was reconstructed but, infrequently, also patches of varying size of non-reconstructed, Sm- or B-terminated surfaces were found. On the smallest patches, clear indications for the hybridization gap and inter-multiplet transitions were observed. On non-reconstructed surface areas large enough for coherent co-tunneling we were able to observe clear-cut Fano resonances. Our locally resolved STS indicated considerable finite conductance on all surfaces independent of their structure., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have grown the new uranium compound URhIn$_5$ with the tetragonal HoCoGa$_5$-type by the In self flux method. In contrast to the nonmagnetic ground state of the isoelectronic analogue URhGa$_5$, URhIn$_5$ is an antiferromagnet with antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 98 K. The moderately large electronic specific heat coefficient $\gamma$ = 50 mJ/K$^2$mol demonstrates the contribution of 5$f$ electrons to the conduction band. On the other hand, magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic state roughly follows a Curie-Weiss law with a paramagnetic effective moment corresponding to a localized uranium ion. The crossover from localized to itinerant character at low temperature may occur around the characteristic temperature 150 K where the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity show a marked anomaly., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Strongly correlated Kondo insulator SmB6 is known for its peculiar low temperature residual conduction, which has recently been demonstrated to arise from a robust metallic surface state, as predicted by the theory of topological Kondo insulator (TKI). Photoemission, quantum oscillation and magnetic doping experiments have provided evidence for the Dirac-like dispersion and topological protection. Questions arise as whether signatures of spin-momentum locking and electron interaction could be resolved in transport measurements. Here we report metallic conduction of surface state down to mK temperatures with saturation behaviors suggestive of Kondo effect. We observe in the surface state the weak-antilocalization (WAL) effect that is in agreement with a spin-momentum locked metallic surface. At larger perpendicular magnetic fields, the surface state exhibits an unusual linear magnetoresistance similar to those found in Bi-based topological insulators and in graphene. Strongly correlated electron systems show many exotic properties such as unconventional superconductity, quantum criticality, and Kondo insulating behavior. In addition, the Kondo insulator SmB6 has been predicted theoretically to be a 3D topological insulator with a metallic surface state. We report here transport measurements on doped SmB6, which show that ~3% magnetic and non-magnetic dopants in SmB6 exhibit clearly contrasting behavior, evidence that the metallic surface state is only destroyed when time reversal symmetry is broken. We find as well a quantum percolation limit of impurity concentration which transform the topological insulator into a conventional band insulator by forming impurity band. Our careful thickness dependence results show that SmB6 is the first demonstatrated perfect 3D topological insulator with virtually zero residual bulk conductivity., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

In Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride SmB$_6$, strong correlation and band hybridization lead to an insulating gap and a diverging resistance at low temperature. The resistance divergence ends at about 5 Kelvin, a behavior recently demonstrated to arise from the surface conductance. However, questions remain whether and where a topological surface state exists. Quantum oscillations have not been observed to map the Fermi surface. We solve the problem by resolving the Landau Level quantization and Fermi surface topology using torque magnetometry. The observed Fermi surface suggests a two dimensional surface state on the (101) plane. Furthermore, the tracking of the Landau Levels in the infinite magnetic field limit points to -1/2, which indicates a 2D Dirac electronic state.

The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature (T < 10K) transport anomaly and has recently attracted attention as a new topological insulator candidate. By combining low-temperature and high energy-momentum resolution of the laser-based ARPES technique, for the first time, we probe the surface electronic structure of the anomalous conductivity regime. We observe that the bulk bands exhibit a Kondo gap of 14 meV and identify in-gap low-lying states within a 4 meV window of the Fermi level on the (001)-surface of this material. The low-lying states are found to form electron-like Fermi surface pockets that enclose the X and the Gamma points of the surface Brillouin zone. These states disappear as temperature is raised above 15K in correspondence with the complete disappearance of the 2D conductivity channels in SmB6. While the topological nature of the in-gap metallic states cannot be ascertained without spin (spin-texture) measurements our bulk and surface measurements carried out in the transport-anomaly-temperature regime (T < 10K) are consistent with the first-principle predicted Fermi surface behavior of a topological Kondo insulator phase in this material., Comment: 4 Figures, 6 Pages

A topological insulator (TI) is an unusual quantum state in which the insulating bulk is topologically distinct from vacuum, resulting in a unique metallic surface that is robust against time-reversal invariant perturbations. These surface transport properties, however, remains difficult to be isolated from the bulk in existing TI crystals (Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3) due to impurity caused bulk conduction. We report in large crystals of topological Kondo insulator (TKI) candidate material SmB6 the thickness-independent surface Hall effects and non- local transport, which are robust against perturbations including mechanical abrasion. These results serve as proof that at low temperatures SmB6 has a robust metallic surface that surrounds a truly insulating bulk, paving the way for transport studies of the surface state in this proposed TKI material. We report measurements of weakly nonlinear electronic transport, as measured by third-harmonic voltage generation $V_{3\omega}$, in the low-carrier density semimetallic ferromagnet EuB$_6$, which exhibits an unusual magnetic ordering with two consecutive transitions at $T_{c_1} = 15.6$\,K and $T_{c_2} = 12.5$\,K. Upon cooling in zero magnetic field through the ferromagnetic transition, the dramatic drop in the linear resistivity at the upper transition $T_{c_1}$ coincides with the onset of nonlinearity, and upon further cooling is followed by a pronounced peak in $V_{3 \omega}$ at the lower transition $T_{c_2}$. Likewise, in the paramagnetic regime, a drop of the material's magnetoresistance $R(H)$ precedes a magnetic-field-induced peak in nonlinear transport. A striking observation is a linear temperature dependence of $V_{3\omega}^{\rm peak}(H)$. We suggest a picture where at the upper transition $T_{c_1}$ the coalescing MP form a conducting path giving rise to a strong decrease in the resistance. The MP formation sets in at around $T^\ast \sim 35$\,K below which these entities are isolated and strongly fluctuating, while growing in number. The MP then start to form links at $T_{c_1}$, where percolative electronic transport is observed. The MP merge and start forming a continuum at the threshold $T_{c_2}$. In the paramagnetic temperature regime $T_{c_1} < T < T^\ast$, MP percolation is induced by a magnetic field, and the threshold accompanied by charge carrier delocalization occurs at a single critical magnetization., Comment: to appear in J. We report a globally reversible effect of electronic tuning on the magnetic phase diagram in CeCoIn_{5} driven by electron (Pt and Sn) and hole (Cd, Hg) doping. Consequently, we are able to extract the superconducting pair breaking component for hole and electron dopants with pressure and co-doping studies, respectively. We find that these nominally non-magnetic dopants have a remarkably weak pair breaking effect for a d-wave superconductor. The pair breaking is weaker for hole dopants, which induce magnetic moments, than for electron dopants. Furthermore, both Pt and Sn doping have a similar effect on superconductivity despite being on different dopant sites, arguing against the notion that superconductivity lives predominantly in the CeIn_{3} planes of these materials. A current of electrons traversing a landscape of localized spins possessing non-coplanar magnetic order gains a geometrical (Berry) phase which can lead to a Hall voltage independent of the spin-orbit coupling within the material--a geometrical Hall effect. We show that the highly-correlated metal UCu5 possesses an unusually large controllable geometrical Hall effect at T<1.2K due to its frustration-induced magnetic order. The magnitude of the Hall response exceeds 20% of the \nu=1 quantum Hall effect per atomic layer, which translates into an effective magnetic field of several hundred Tesla acting on the electrons. The existence of such a large geometric Hall response in UCu5 opens a new field of inquiry into the importance of the role of frustration in highly-correlated electron materials., Comment: article and supplemental information

From measurements of fluctuation spectroscopy and weak nonlinear transport on the semimetallic ferromagnet EuB$_6$ we find direct evidence for magnetically-driven electronic phase separation consistent with the picture of percolation of magnetic polarons (MP), which form highly conducting magnetically-ordered clusters in a paramagnetic and 'poorly conducting' background. These different parts of the conducting network are probed separately by the noise spectroscopy/nonlinear transport and the conventional linear resistivity. We suggest a comprehensive and 'universal' scenario for the MP percolation, which occurs at a critical magnetization either induced by ferromagnetic order at zero field or externally applied magnetic fields in the paramagentic region.
