Search

Shocks, turbulence and winds all influence the electron velocity distribution in hot plasmas, exciting lower-energy electrons and generating a high-energy (typically power-law) tail. This effect, typically described as a kappa distribution can affect both the line and continuum X-ray spectrum emitted by the plasma. Hahn & Savin (2015) proposed a "Maxwellian decomposition" to generate the rate coefficients of kappa distributions. Using their method and the AtomDB atomic database, we have developed a general model to calculate the emission from a plasma with a kappa distribution. We compare our kappa results for the charge state distribution and spectra of oxygen to those from KAPPA package with the ion data available within the CHIANTI atomic database. Sufficiently energetic electrons, created either in a kappa distribution or merely a very hot Maxwellian plasma, can also emit via electron-electron (e-e) bremsstrahlung, a process not previously included in AtomDB. We have added this process to AtomDB and apply it to calculate the temperature gradients, as well as the total spectra from the post-shock regions of an accreting magnetic cataclysmic variable (CV). We find the contribution of e-e bremsstrahlung to the total spectra exceeds 10% at KT\sim 100 keV, with the total emissivity in the post-shock accretion stream differing by more than 10% at energies above 60 keV., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, ApJS in press

Existing analysis based on XMM-Newton/RGS spectra already shows that the G-ratio of the OVII He$\alpha$ triplet in the inner bulge of M31 is too high to be consistent with a pure optically thin thermal plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE). Different processes that may affect properties of diffuse hot plasma were proposed, such as resonance scattering (RS) and charge exchange (CX) with cold gas. To determine which physical process(es) may be responsible for this inconsistency, we present a systematic spectroscopic analysis based on 0.8 Ms XMM-Newton/RGS data, together with complementary Chandra/ACIS-S images. The combination of these data enables us to reveal multiple non-CIE spectroscopic diagnostics, including but not limited to the large G-ratios of He$\alpha$ triplets (OVII, NVI, and NeIX) and the high Lyman series line ratios (OVIII Ly$\beta$/Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\gamma$/Ly$\alpha$, and NVII Ly$\beta$/Ly$\alpha$), which are not expected for a CIE plasma, and the high iron line ratios (FeXVIII 14.2 \AA/FeXVII~17 \AA and FeXVII~15 \AA/17 \AA), which suggest much higher temperatures than other line ratios, as well as their spatial variations. Neither CX nor RS explains all these spectroscopic diagnostics satisfactorily. Alternatively, we find that an active galactic nucleus (AGN) relic scenario provides a plausible explanation for virtually all the signatures. We estimate that an AGN was present at the center of M31 about half a million years ago and that the initial ionization parameter $\xi$ of the relic plasma is in the range of 3-4., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

Motivated by possible atomic origins of the unidentified emission line detected at 3.55 keV to 3.57 keV in a stacked spectrum of galaxy clusters (Bulbul et al. 2014), an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) was used to investigate the resonant dielectronic recombination (DR) process in highly-charged argon ions as a possible contributor to the emission feature. The He-like Ar DR-induced transition 1s$^2$2l - 1s2l3l$^\prime$ was suggested to produce a 3.62 keV photon (Bulbul et al. 2014) near the unidentified line at 3.57 keV and was the starting point of our investigation. The collisional-radiative model NOMAD was used to create synthetic spectra for comparison with both our EBIT measurements and with spectra produced with the AtomDB database/Astrophysical Plasma Emission Code (APEC) used in the Bulbul et al. (2014) work. Excellent agreement was found between the NOMAD and EBIT spectra, providing a high level of confidence in the atomic data used. Comparison of the NOMAD and APEC spectra revealed a number of missing features in the AtomDB database near the unidentified line. At an electron temperature of $T_e$ = 1.72 keV, the inclusion of the missing lines in AtomDB increases the total flux in the 3.5 keV to 3.66 keV energy band by a factor of 2. While important, this extra emission is not enough to explain the unidentified line found in the galaxy cluster spectra.

X-ray observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the last decade have shown that the presence of recombining plasmas is somewhat common in a certain type of object. The SNR W49B is the youngest, hottest, and most highly ionized among such objects and hence provides crucial information about how the recombination phase is reached during the early evolutionary phase of SNRs. In particular, spectral properties of radiative recombination continuum (RRC) from Fe are the key for constraining the detailed plasma conditions. Here we present imaging and spectral studies of W49B with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), utilizing the highest-ever sensitivity to the Fe RRC at > 8.8keV. We confirm that the Fe RRC is the most prominent at the western part of the SNR because of the lowest electron temperature (~ 1.2 keV) achieved there. Our spatially-resolved spectral analysis reveals a positive correlation between the electron temperature and the recombination timescale with a uniform initial temperature of ~ 4 keV, which is consistent with the rapid adiabatic cooling scenario as an origin of the overionization. We report on NuSTAR observations of the mixed morphology supernova remnant (SNR) W49B, focusing on its nonthermal emission. Whereas radio observations as well as recent gamma-ray observations evidenced particle acceleration in this SNR, nonthermal X-ray emission has not been reported so far. With the unprecedented sensitivity of NuSTAR in the hard X-ray band, we detect a significant power-law-like component extending up to $\sim 20~{\rm keV}$, most probably of nonthermal origin. The newly discovered component has a photon index of $\Gamma =1.4^{+1.0}_{-1.1}$ with an energy flux between 10 and 20 keV of $(3.3 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-13}~{\rm erg}~{\rm cm}^{-2}~{\rm s}^{-1}$. The emission mechanism is discussed based on the NuSTAR data combined with those in other wavelengths in the literature. The NuSTAR data, in terms both of the spectral slope and of the flux, are best interpreted as nonthermal electron bremsstrahlung. We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1 $\pm$ 10.6)% and, the polarization angle is 110.7$^o$ + 13.2 / $-$13.0$^o$ in the energy range of 60--160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.0$^o$ $\pm$0.1$^o$., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. Type Ia supernovae originate from the explosion of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in binary systems, but the exact nature of their progenitors remains elusive. The bulk properties of Type Ia supernova remnants, such as the radius and the centroid energy of the Fe K$\alpha$ blend in the X-ray spectrum, are determined by the properties of the supernova ejecta and the ambient medium. We model the interaction between Chandrasekhar and sub-Chandrasekhar models for Type Ia supernova ejecta and a range of uniform ambient medium densities in one dimension up to an age of 5000 years. We generate synthetic X-ray spectra from these supernova remnant models and compare their bulk properties at different expansion ages with X-ray observations from \textit{Chandra} and \textit{Suzaku}. We find that our models can successfully reproduce the bulk properties of most observed remnants, suggesting that Type Ia SN progenitors do not modify their surroundings significantly on scales of a few pc. Ambient medium density and expansion age are the main contributors to the diversity of the bulk properties in our models. Chandrasekhar and sub-Chandrasekhar progenitors make similar predictions for the bulk remnant properties, but detailed fits to X-ray spectra have the power to discriminate explosion energetics and progenitor scenarios., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, published in the ApJ

We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5$-$0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of $\Gamma_1=1.74\pm0.02$ and $\Gamma_2=2.14\pm0.01$ below and above the break at $7.1\pm0.3$ keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result ($\sim9.0$ keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833$-$1034 with the HXI and SGD. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 $\sigma$. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables.
