Recently, liquidity issues in financial markets and portfolio asset management have attracted much attention among investors and scholars, fuelling a stream of research devoted to exploring the role of liquidity in investment decisions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the effects of introducing liquidity in portfolio optimization problems. For this purpose, first we consider three volume-based liquidity measures proposed in the literature and we build a new one particularly suited to portfolio optimization. Secondly, we formulate an extended version of the Markowitz portfolio selection problem, named mean–variance–liquidity, wherein the goal is to minimize the portfolio variance subject to the usual constraint on the expected portfolio return and an additional constraint on the portfolio liquidity. Thirdly, we consider a sensitivity analysis, with the aim to assess the trade-offs between liquidity and return, on the one hand, and between liquidity and risk, on the other hand. In the second part of the paper, the portfolio optimization framework is applied to a dataset of US ETFs comprising both standard and alternative, often illiquid, investments. The analysis is carried out with all the liquidity measures considered, allowing us to shed light on the relationships among risk, return and liquidity. Finally, we study the effects of the introduction of a Bitcoin ETF, as an asset with an extremely high expected return and risk.

Almond trees are the most cultivated nut tree in the world. The production of almonds generates large amounts of by-products, much of which goes unused. Herein, this study aimed to develop a green chemistry approach to identify and extract potentially valuable compounds from almond by-products. Initially, a screening was performed with 10 different Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADESs). The mixture lactic acid/glycerol, with a molar ratio 1:1 (1:50 plant material to NADES (w/v) with 20% v/v of water) was identified as the best extraction solvent for catechin, caffeoylquinic acid, and condensed tannins in almond hulls. Subsequently, a method was optimized by a Design of Experiment (DoE) protocol using a miniaturized extraction technique, Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), in conjunction with the chosen NADESs. The optimal conditions were found to be 70 °C with 15 min irradiation time. The optimal extraction conditions determined by the DoE were confirmed experimentally and compared to methods already established in the literature. With these conditions, the extraction of metabolites was 2.4 times higher, according to the increase in total peak area, than the established literature methods used. Additionally, by applying the multiparameter Analytical Greenness Metric (AGREE) and Green Analytical Process Index (GAPI) metrics, it was possible to conclude that the developed method was greener than the established literature methods as it includes various principles of green analytical chemistry.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Morbidity of liver resections is related to intraoperative bleeding and postoperative biliary fistulas. The Endo-GIA stapler (EG) in liver resections is well established, but its cost is high, limiting its use. The linear cutting stapler (LCS) is a lower cost device. AIMS: To report open liver resections, using LCS for transection of the liver parenchyma and en bloc stapling of vessels and bile ducts. METHODS: Ten patients were included in the study. Four patients with severe abdominal pain had benign liver tumors (three adenomas and one focal nodular hyperplasia). Among the remaining six patients, four underwent liver resection for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases, three of which had undergone preoperative chemotherapy. The other two cases were one patient with metastasis from a testicular teratoma and the other with metastasis from a gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor. RESULTS: The average length of stay was five days (range 4–7 days). Of the seven patients who underwent resections of segments II/III, two presented postoperative complications: one developed a seroma and the other a collection of abdominal fluid who underwent percutaneous drainage, antibiotic therapy, and blood transfusion. Furthermore, the three patients who underwent major resections had postoperative complications: two developed anemia and received blood transfusions and one had biloma and underwent percutaneous drainage and antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the linear stapler in hepatectomies was efficient and at lower costs, making it suitable for use whenever EG is not available. The size of the LCS stapler shaft is more suitable for en bloc transection of the left lateral segment of the liver, which is thinner than the right one. Further studies are needed to evaluate the safety of LCS for large liver resections and resections of tumors located in the right hepatic lobe.

This essay aims to present some sexual representations in rock art in the Serra da Capivara National Park (PNSC), in southeastern Piauí, Brazil. Since immemorial times, humans have created ways to express themselves, and rock art, engravings and/or paintings were sociocultural forms found to store and safeguard the most varied everyday information of group interests. More than 1,000 archaeological sites are known in the park, representing subjects related to the sociability of ancestral life, such as hunting, gathering, fighting, ceremonies, sexualities and much more. These depictions have been studied since the 1970’s and allowed the creation of a national park recognized as a World Heritage site. Although the paintings depict scenes considered by Western observers as obscene, barbaric and immoral, it is necessary to remember that primitive sexuality was not separate, private subject, to be hidden from the eyes of the social human life, as it is considered by us in 21st century. Background Implementing stroke care protocols has intended to provide better care quality, favor early functional recovery, and achieving long-term results for the rehabilitation of the patient. Objective To analyze the effect of implementing care protocols on the outcomes of acute ischemic stroke. Methods Primary studies published from 2011 to 2020 and which met the following criteria were included: population should be people with acute ischemic stroke; studies should present results on the outcomes of using protocols in the therapeutic approach to acute ischemic stroke. The bibliographic search was carried out in June 2020 in 7 databases. The article selection was conducted by two independent reviewers and the results were narratively synthesized. Results A total of 11,226 publications were retrieved in the databases, of which 30 were included in the study. After implementing the protocol, 70.8% of the publications found an increase in the rate of performing reperfusion therapy, such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy; 45.5% identified an improvement in the clinical prognosis of the patient; and 25.0% of the studies identified a decrease in the length of hospital stay. Out of 19 studies that addressed the rate of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, 2 (10.5%) identified a decrease. A decrease in mortality was mentioned in 3 (25.0%) articles out of 12 that evaluated this outcome. Conclusions We have identified the importance of implementing protocols in increasing the performance of reperfusion therapies, and a good functional outcome with improved prognosis after discharge. However, there is still a need to invest in reducing post-thrombolysis complications and mortality.

Introduction: Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) plants generate significant amounts of solid end-products, such as bottom ash (BA), containing potentially toxic elements like Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb, base elements (e.g., Si, Al, Fe, Ti, Cu, and Zn), and other technology-critical elements (TCE), such as Co, Ga, Mg, Nb, P, Sb, Sc, V, Li, Sr, and REE. The accurate determination of these elements in anthropogenic wastes and the assessment of their removal are crucial for the circular economy.Methods: This paper aims to characterize BA samples from two Italian MSWI plants (named FE and FC) by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and comparatively assess the removal of a selection of elements using the aqua regia digestion (ARD) method, followed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analytical determination.Results and discussion: According to the XRF analysis, Ca, Fe, Al, Mg, and Na had high concentrations in BA, and their contents increased with decreasing particle size in both FE and FC samples. The Enrichment Factor (EF) based on the upper continental crust’s average values of Zn, Cu, and Pb was high (EF > 30), while Cr, Ni, and As were scarcely enriched (EF > 1), and REE enrichment was very low (EF < 1). In both FE and FC plants, the Degree of Elements Extractability (DE) was high (>80%), especially in the fine-grained fractions of MSWI bottom ash. The Enrichment Factor (EF) based on the upper continental crust average values of Zn, Cu, and Pb was high (EF > 30), while Cr, Ni, and As were scarcely enriched (EF > 1), and REE enrichment was very low (EF < 1). The bibliometric analysis helped highlight research trends in the assessment and treatment of MSWI-BA, discriminating the literature impact on environment/health issues and recovery/recycling strategies for the circular economy associated with the MSWI-BA material.Conclusion: Although higher data coverage is needed, the present study suggests ARD as an effective method for better understanding the environmental impact and recoverability of useful elements from anthropogenic materials like MSWI bottom ash.

Introduction: Bottom ash (BA) constitutes a significant by-product obtained during the incineration of municipal solid waste in waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. BA is a heterogeneous material made of different fractions, glass, minerals, metals, and unburned residual organic matter. Due to the non-hazardous nature of the unburned material, BA can be effectively recycled, becoming a valuable resource. However, BA displays a high content of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) within its finer grain size. Antoine Brea’s L’Enfer mis en vulgaire parlure (the latest translation of Dante’s Inferno, published in 2021) illustrates a semantic duplicity of the term error which, etymologically, means both to err and to wander. Brea’s Enfer wanders, in the sense that it programmatically distances itself from the translators who preceded it (a retranslation is always a correction and, as such, it presupposes the error of the previous translations). But this “traduction à la diable” also errs in the literal sense of the term, since it deviates from an established linguistic norm. Brea’s reaction to the purist or puritanical translations of his predecessors produces in fact a degradation of language into « parlure » and of vulgaris (the illustrious vernacular theorized by Dante) into vulgar. But is this erring really an error? To answer this question, this essay will focus the violation of a translational taboo and, in particular, the presence of scatological vocabulary in Brea’s Inferno. A qualitative analysis will be supported by the tools offered by textometry and by an automatic survey of the lexicon of a corpus, “Les Divines”, comprising 40 French translations of Dante’s Inferno (totaling 1,474,726 words) published from 1800 to 2021

T helper 9 (TH9) cells are important for the development of inflammatory and allergic diseases. The TH9 transcriptional network converges signals from cytokines and antigen presentation but is incompletely understood. Here, we identified TL1A, a member of the TNF superfamily, as a strong inducer of mouse and human TH9 differentiation. Mechanistically, TL1A induced the expression of the transcription factors BATF and BATF3 and facilitated their binding to the Il9 promoter leading to enhanced secretion of IL-9. BATF- and BATF3-deficiencies impaired IL-9 secretion under TH9 and TH9-TL1A-polarizing conditions. In vivo, using a T-cell transfer model, we demonstrated that TL1A promoted IL-9-dependent, TH9 cell-induced intestinal and lung inflammation. Neutralizing IL-9 antibodies attenuated TL1A-driven mucosal inflammation. Batf3-/- TH9-TL1A cells induced reduced inflammation and cytokine expression in vivo compared to WT cells. Our results demonstrate that TL1A promotes TH9 cell differentiation and function and define a role for BATF3 in T-cell-driven mucosal inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by alterations in the intestinal microbiota and altered immune responses to gut microbiota. Evidence is accumulating that IBD is influenced by not only commensal bacteria but also commensal fungi. We characterized fungi directly associated with the intestinal mucosa in healthy people and Crohn's disease patients and identified fungi specifically abundant in patients. One of these, the common skin resident fungus Malassezia restricta, is also linked to the presence of an IBD-associated polymorphism in the gene for CARD9, a signaling adaptor important for anti-fungal defense. M. restricta elicits innate inflammatory responses largely through CARD9 and is recognized by Crohn's disease patient anti-fungal antibodies. This yeast elicits strong inflammatory cytokine production from innate cells harboring the IBD-linked polymorphism in CARD9 and exacerbates colitis via CARD9 in mouse models of disease. Collectively, these results suggest that targeting specific commensal fungi may be a therapeutic strategy for IBD.

Objective: Most children with short stature remain without an etiologic diagnosis after extensive clinical and laboratory evaluation and are classified as idiopathic short stature (ISS). This study aimed to determine the diagnostic yield of a multigene analysis in children classified as ISS. Design and methods: We selected 102 children with ISS and performed the genetic analysis as part of the initial investigation. We developed customized targeted panel sequencing, including all genes already implicated in the isolated short-stature phenotype. Rare and deleterious single nucleotide or copy number variants were assessed by bioinformatic tools. Results: We identified 20 heterozygous pathogenic (P) or likely pathogenic (LP) genetic variants in 17 of 102 patients (diagnostic yield = 16.7%). Three patients had more than one P/LP genetic alteration. Most of the findings were in genes associated with the growth plate differentiation: IHH (n = 4), SHOX (n = 3), FGFR3 (n = 2), NPR2 (n = 2), ACAN (n = 2), and COL2A1 (n = 1) or involved in the RAS/MAPK pathway: NF1 (n = 2), PTPN11 (n = 1), CBL (n = 1), and BRAF (n = 1). None of these patients had clinical findings to guide a candidate gene approach. The diagnostic yield was higher among children with severe short stature (35% vs 12.2% for height SDS ≤ or > −3; P = 0.034). The genetic diagnosis had an impact on clinical management for four children. Conclusion: A multigene sequencing approach can determine the genetic etiology of short stature in up to one in six children with ISS, removing the term idiopathic from their clinical classification.

Construído a partir das teorias arqueológicas pós-coloniais e de um estudo anterior sobre grafites apotropaicos de um dos autores, neste artigo discutimos a importância de deste corpus de grafites como fonte para um estudo de gênero sobre o cotidiano romano. O objetivo deste artigo é, portanto, distinto do que o inspirou, mudando a perspectiva para a importância do espaço da escrita para repensar a identidade romana no início do Principado. Argumentaremos que espaços da escrita, quando analisados a partir de sua materialidade, se torna evidência para a discussão de conflitos sociais, identidade e diversidade na sociedade romana. Também permitem uma leitura mais balanceada do Império, levando em consideração as diferentes visões de mundo das pessoas de origem humilde.

Understanding changes in the mechanical features of a single protein from a mutated virus while establishing its relation to the point mutations is critical in developing new inhibitory routes to tackle the uncontrollable spread of the virus. Addressing this, herein, the chemomechanical features of a single spike protein are quantified from alpha, beta, and gamma variants of SARS‐CoV‐2. Integrated amplitude‐modulation atomic force microscopy is used with dynamic force–distance curve (FDC) spectroscopy, in combination with theoretical models, to quantify Young's modulus, stiffness, adhesion forces, van der Waals forces, and the dissipative energy of single spike proteins. These obtained nanomechanical properties can be correlated with mutations in the individual proteins. Therefore, this work opens new possibilities to understand how the mechanical properties of a single spike protein relate to the viral functions. Additionally, single‐protein nanomechanical experiments enable a variety of applications that, collectively, may build up a new portfolio of understanding protein biochemistry during the evolution of viruses.

Este trabalho apresenta alguns resultados oriundos de uma pesquisa de mestrado no Ensino de Ciências, que foi delineada seguindo os passos da Pesquisa-ação e utiliza a metodologia de Aprendizagem Baseada em Projetos (ABP) aplicada com os princípios da Aprendizagem Colaborativa. O objetivo geral é investigar a influência da ABP aliada à colaboração aluno/aluno, aluno/professor, aluno/tecnologias digitais na aprendizagem conceitual dos estudantes. O projeto foi aplicado ao nono ano de uma escola pública com a participação da pesquisadora em parceria com a professora regente da turma. Com base nas reflexões, acerca dos resultados, concluiu-se, entre vários aspectos, que a parceria pesquisadora/ professora regente é essencial para o bom andamento do projeto. Além disso, um projeto, envolvendo ABP, necessita de disponibilidade de tempo. Quanto as tecnologias digitais, essas são ferramentas eficientes para promover a colaboração entre os estudantes, mas demandam de planejamento pedagógico por parte do docente que pretende utilizá-las.

Durante sua passagem pela cidade de São Paulo, em fevereiro de 2023, em meio a uma série de eventos de samba de roda nos estados de Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul e em Minas Gerais, tivemos a oportunidade de receber Zélia Maria Paiva Souza, importante mestra sambadeira e representante do samba de roda, mais especificamente o samba chula do quilombo de São Braz, distrito de Santo Amaro da Purificação, Recôncavo da Bahia. Conhecida como Zélia do Prato, dona de uma risada marcante e de suntuosas indumentárias que compõem seu perfil de sambadeira, Dona Zélia, como também é chamada, nos concedeu esta entrevista regada a relatos pessoais, cantigas e trocas afetuosas, na qual as particularidades de suas experiências nos conduzem a paisagens e temporalidades expandidas. Nela, o tema do trajar-se desfia relações entre o samba e a religiosidade manifestadas para além das instituições, nas festas, no cotidiano, na socialização, naquilo que se entende como legado antepassado e que estruturou e estrutura comportamentos coletivos.

Background The treatment of acute ischemic stroke with cerebral reperfusion therapy requires rapid care and recognition of symptoms. Objective To analyze the effectiveness of implementing protocols for acute ischemic stroke in reducing care time. Methods Systematic review, which was performed with primary studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish published between 2011 and 2020. Inclusion criteria: study population should comprise people with acute ischemic stroke and studies should present results on the effectiveness of using urgent care protocols in reducing care time. The bibliographic search was conducted in June 2020 in the LILACS, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, and SocINDEX databases. The articles were selected, and data were extracted by two independent reviewers; the synthesis of the results was performed narratively. The methodological quality of articles was evaluated through specific instruments proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results A total of 11,226 publications were found, of which 35 were included in the study. Only one study reported improvement in the symptoms-onset-to-door time after protocol implementation. The effectiveness of the therapeutic approach protocols for ischemic stroke was identified in improving door-to-image, image-to-needle, door-to-needle and symptoms-onset-to-needle times. The main limitation found in the articles concerned the lack of clarity in relation to the study population. Conclusions Several advances have been identified in in-hospital care with protocol implementation; however, it is necessary to improve the recognition time of stroke symptoms among those who have the first contact with the person affected by the stroke and among the professionals involved with the prehospital care.
