The rapidly collapsing glacial systems of the Alps produced a large number of melt-water lakes and mires after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the Late Glacial period. The Rhone-Aare-glacier system gave rise to large moorlands and lakes in the region of the Three Lakes Region of Western Switzerland. When moorlands are formed, they are efficient sinks of atmospheric carbon, but when transformed to agricultural land they are significant C sources. In addition, mires can be used as archives for reconstructing landscape evolution. We explored in more detail the dynamics of the landscape of the Three Lakes Region with a particular focus on the formation and degradation of mires. The Bernese part of the Three Lakes Region developed to become—after the optimisation of the water-levels of the Swiss Jura—the vegetable belt of Switzerland. The situation for agriculture, however, has now become critical due to an overexploitation of the peatland. Until c. 13 ka BP the entire region was hydrologically connected. An additional lake existed at the western end of the plain receiving sediments from the Aare river. Around 13 ka BP, this lake was isolated from the Aare river and completely silted up until c. 10 ka BP when a mire started to form. In the valley floor (‘Grosses Moos’), the meandering Aare and the varying level of the nearby lake of Neuchâtel caused a spatio-temporally patchy formation of mires (start of formation: 10–3 ka BP). Strong morphodynamics having high erosion and sedimentation rates and a high variability of the chemical composition of the deposited material prevailed during the early Holocene until c. 7.5 ka BP. The situation remained relatively quiet between 5 and 2 ka BP. However, during the last 2000 years the hydrodynamic and geomorphic activities have increased again. Dendrochronology has been applied around the world over decades to reconstruct historical geomorphological events and climatic conditions. Traditionally, this research has been conducted using trees (conifers as well as broad-leaved trees) but, in the last few decades, several shrub and dwarf shrub species have also been shown to be useful for dendrochronological purposes. This study assesses the potential of mountain avens (Dryas octopetala L.) to provide accurately dated information about past debris-flow events. The study site, the Marlt-Graben debris-fan, is located in South Tyrol (Italy). 119 shrubs from three debris-flow tracks were analyzed. The longest radius of each sample was measured and cross-dated to build two chronologies for each debris-flow track, one for each leveé. Correlations between these chronologies and precipitation and temperature data from five climate stations located in the proximity of the study site were calculated. The cross-dating procedure was complex, but a strict grouping of the samples, based on the specific leveés of the tracks, enabled the construction of mean chronologies for each of the individual slopes. Although the development of a mean chronology for the study area was unsuccessful, the cross-dated ages of the single shrubs allowed us to reconstruct debris-flow events by utilizing the minimum age method. The low climate correlations suggest that micro site conditions strongly influence the growth of this dwarf shrub. Although the results of this study suggest that Dryas octopetala may provide useful dendroecological information, additional information about its growth dynamics is required before this potential can be fully realized.

A spatiotemporal reconstruction of slope movements on the edge of Lake Lucerne near the municipality of Horw, canton of Lucerne, is presented. The reconstruction was realized by analyzing growth reactions of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and fir (Abies alba Mill.) trees growing on this slope. Before dendrochronological sampling, a detailed geomorphological mapping of the landslide was conducted with the aim to determine the spatial extent of the sliding area. For tree-ring analyses, 124 increment cores from 62 trees were analyzed following standard techniques of dendrogeomorphology. In addition, long micro-sections were prepared from the entire cores to extend the common eccentricity analyses by microscopic determination of the onset of reaction wood in fir and beech. Results clearly show that the area is moving at least since 1948. A significant concentration of events was observed between the years 1990 and 2000 as well as after 2006. The definition of a threshold to define events using an eccentricity index alone is problematic and needs to be adapted to specific site conditions. For this reason, we recommend always combining the application of an eccentricity index with a detailed visual (anatomical) inspection to check for the occurrence of reaction wood.

Peat and lake sediments as well as a nearby soil catena were sampled to reconstruct the environmental history of a small infilled lake basin (mire) in the central alpine foreland of Switzerland. Soil evolution is best regarded as discontinuous over time and conceptualised by ‘progressive’ or ‘regressive’ process phases. We analysed the surrounding soils and used corresponding pedosignatures in the mire sediments to characterise notable phases of erosion and deposition. We assumed that the mire sediments would reflect these phases, that elemental composition (major and minor compounds) and rare earth elements (REEs) would allow us to differentiate past processes and that progressive and regressive phases of soil development can be discerned. Although radiocarbon ages are equivocal, it appears from pollen analyses that a lake was present here by c. 45 ka BP. After the retreat of the glacier from this area following the LGM, continuous sedimentation occurred until a mire developed during Pleistocene-Holocene transition. This transition period was accompanied by more intense erosion, as characterised by chemical signatures. A stable phase developed between c. 10-5 ka BP giving rise to progressive soil evolution. Between 5 and 4 ka BP, evidence appears for several erosional phases, predominantly detectable at the margin of the mire. These erosion phases, coupled with accumulation in the mire, are even more evident after 4 ka BP and especially after 2.1 ka BP. Based on soil investigations, elemental fluxes are detected along the slopes with distinct accumulations at the footslope. Evidence for anthropogenic influences and subsequent regressive soil formation phases appear in this pre-alpine landscape about 5 ka BP (Neolithic/Early Bronze Age), which appears to intensify after 2.1 ka BP (Roman period to present). Dynamic root-development models are indispensable for biomechanical and biomass allocation studies, and also play an important role in understanding slope stability. There are few root-development models in the literature, and there is a specific lack of dynamic models. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a 3D growth-development model for coarse roots, which is species independent, as long as annual rings are formed. In order to implement this model, the objectives are (I) to interpolate annual growth layers, and (II) to evaluate the interpolations and annual volume computations. The model developed is a combination of 3D laser scans and 2D tree-ring data. A FARO laser ScanArm is used to acquire the coarse-root structure. A MATLAB program then integrates the ring-width measurements into the 3D model. A weighted interpolation algorithm is used to compute cross sections at any point within the model to obtain growth layers. The algorithm considers both the root structure and the ring-width data. The model reconstructed ring profiles with a mean absolute error for mean ring chronologies of <9% and for single radii of <20%. The interpolation accuracy was dependent on the number of input sections and root curvature. Total volume computations deviated by 3.5-6.6% from the reference model. In times of global change biomass calculations and the carbon cycle is gaining in importance. Forests act as carbon sinks and hence, play a crucial role in worlds and forests carbon budgets. Unfortunately, growth models and biomass calculations existing so far mainly concentrate on the above-ground part of trees. For this reason, the aim of the present study is to develop an annually resolved 3D growth model for tree roots, which allows for reliable biomass calculations and can later be combined with above-ground models. A FARO scan arm was used to measure the surface of a tree-root segment. In addition, ring-width measurements were performed manually on sampled cross sections using WinDENDRO. The main goal of this study is to model root growth on an annual scale by combining these data sets. In particular, a laser scan arm was tested as a device for the realistic reproduction of tree-root architecture, although the first evaluation has been performed for a root segment rather than for an entire root system. Deviations in volume calculations differed between 5% and 7% from the actual volume and varied depending on the used modeling technique. The model with the smallest deviations represented the structure of the root segment in a realistic way and distances and diameter of cross sections were acceptable approximations of the real values. However, the volume calculations varied depending on object complexity, modeling technique and order of modeling steps. In addition, it was possible to merge tree-ring borders as coordinates into the surface model and receive age information in connection with the spatial allocation. The scan arm was evaluated as an innovative and applicable device with high potential for root modeling. Nevertheless, there are still many problems connected with the scanning technique which have an influence on the accuracy of the model but are expected to improve with technical progress

Arctic ecosystems are important carbon sinks. Increasing temperatures in these regions might stimulate soil carbon release. Evidence suggests that deciduous shrubs might counteract these carbon losses because they positively respond to increasing temperature, but their role in ecosystem carbon budgets remains uncertain. Many studies dealing with large-scale tundra greening and carbon sequestration in relation to increasing temperature have usually based their estimations on the aboveground components, but very little is known about belowground growth. In this context, annual rings can provide a retrospective insight into intra-plant temperature responses and seasonal growth allocation. This study presents a 70-year-long and annually resolved intra-plant analysis of ring width and missing ring distribution from a comprehensive serial sectioning, including 142 cross-sections and the measurements of 471 radii from ten Salix polaris Wahlenb. dwarf shrubs growing in the high Arctic on Svalbard. Results indicate a high intra-plant and inter-annual growth variation, characterized by a high proportion of partially (13.6%) and completely (11.2%) missing rings. The annual growth and the frequency of completely missing rings were evenly distributed inside the plant and mainly controlled by summer temperatures. Radial growth in the belowground parts appeared to be proportionally higher during long and warm summers and lower in cold early growing seasons than in the aboveground parts. The results reveal a diverging allocation between aboveground and belowground growth depending on the climatic conditions. Favorable years promoted root allocation since root radial growth occurs after aboveground growth. The observed belowground responses suggest that shrub carbon allocation might be higher than estimated only from the aboveground compartments

The date of the volcanic eruption of Santorini that caused extensive damage toMinoan Crete has been controversial since the 1980s. Some have placed the event in the late seventeenth century BC. Others have made the case for a younger date of around 1500 BC. A recent contribution to that controversy has been the dating of an olive tree branch preserved within the volcanic ash fall on Santorini. In this debate feature Paolo Cherubini and colleagues argue that the olive tree dating (which supports the older chronology) is unreliable on a number of grounds.
