60. Neutron scattering studies and simulations of hydrogen adsorption in single-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract

The storage of hydrogen is one of the main problems that needs to be solved before hydrogen can become a real alternative to oil in mobile applications. Physisorption of hydrogen in an adsorbate is one of the possible solutions to this problem. This thesis studies the adsorption of hydrogen in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs). Neutron scattering techniques are used to probe the possible adsorption sites and the interaction between the hydrogen and the nanotubes at those sites. First, the thesis studies the diffraction of SWNT bundles and the changes to the pattern when hydrogen is adsorbed. The results of a neutron diffraction experiment performed at the LOQ diffractometer at ISIS are presented. The experiment measures the diffraction pattern of SWNT bundles at low temperature with different amounts of deuterium adsorbed. The results are compared to computer simulations in order to identify the changes in the diffraction pattern and extract information about the adsorption sites. The experiments show a shift of the lattice parameter as we increase the amount of deuterium. This increase is associated with the hydrogen molecule pushing the nanotubes apart as they get adsorbed in the interstitial channels and in the grooves of the bundles. Secondly, the results of an inelastic neutron scattering experiment performed at the MARI spectrometer at ISIS are presented. The experiment measures the spectrum of the neutrons scattered from the hydrogen molecule when adsorbed in SWNTs at 20 K. The spectrum is measured at different concentrations of hydrogen on the nanotubes. This experiment provides information about the Q dependence of the J = 0 to J = 1 rotational transition of the hydrogen molecule when adsorbed on the nanotubes. Information about the potential felt by the molecule in the adsorption sites can be extracted by comparing the spectrum of the free hydrogen molecule to the spectrum measured in this experiment. The results of the energy dependence show two different effects related to the adsorption sites that are occupied by the hydrogen molecules. First, there is a contribution originated from hydrogen molecules that are not perturbed in their rotational motion, corresponding to adsorption on the external surface of the nanotube bundles. Second, there is a contribution from hydrogen molecules adsorbed in a site that perturbs their rotational motion, producing a split in their energy levels. There are two types of site that can produce this effect: the interstitial channels and the grooves of the bundles. The ratio between the intensity of the split energy levels in the perturbed sites determine that the type of site that is preferentially occupied is the groove of the bundles. For the momentum dependence, the results show the mean squared displacement of the adsorbed hydrogen molecules as a function of the amount of hydrogen in the sample. The hydrogen molecules are more tightly bound for all concentrations than the hydrogen molecules in solid hydrogen. Additionally, as the amount of hydrogen in the sample increases, the molecules interact more strongly among themselves and thus the mean squared displacement decreases.

Abstract

3D trench silicon pixel sensors, recently developed by the TimeSPOT collaboration, have shown excellent performance in terms of spatial resolution, timing precision and detection efficiency. The combination of these three features make them one of the best candidate for inner tracking detectors operating in high luminosity hadron colliders experiments. This article presents systematic characterisations of these devices made with minimum ionising particles on irradiated sensors with neutrons up to 2.5 · 1016 1 MeV neq cm-2. The results show that 3D trench pixels have extremely high resistance to radiation. The measured time resolution and the detection efficiency of irradiated sensors match those of non-irradiated ones if a slightly higher bias voltage, few tens of Volts, is applied to the pixels. As of today, 3D trench pixels are the only sensors capable of achieving 10 ps time resolution after being irradiated at extremely high fluences, extending by far the capabilities of future tracking systems of HEP experiments operating under extreme conditions. Abstract

Conserved genomic sequences disrupted in humans may underlie uniquely human phenotypic traits. We identified and characterized 10,032 human-specific conserved deletions (hCONDELs). These short (average 2.56 base pairs) deletions are enriched for human brain functions across genetic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic datasets. Using massively parallel reporter assays in six cell types, we discovered 800 hCONDELs conferring significant differences in regulatory activity, half of which enhance rather than disrupt regulatory function. We highlight several hCONDELs with putative human-specific effects on brain development, including HDAC5, CPEB4, and PPP2CA. Reverting an hCONDEL to the ancestral sequence alters the expression of LOXL2 and developmental genes involved in myelination and synaptic function. Our data provide a rich resource to investigate the evolutionary mechanisms driving new traits in humans and other species.

Abstract

Background Approximately 3-8% of all newborns do not breathe spontaneously at birth, and require time critical resuscitation. Resuscitation guidelines are mostly based on best practice, and more research on newborn resucitation is highly sought for. Methods The NewbornTime project will develop artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions for activity recognition during newborn resuscitations based on both visible light spectrum videos and infrared spectrum (thermal) videos. In addition, time-of-birth detection will be developed using thermal videos from the delivery rooms. Deep Neural Network models will be developed, focusing on methods for limited supervision and solutions adapting to on-site environments. A timeline description of the video analysis output enables objective analysis of resuscitation events. The project further aims to use machine learning to find patterns in large amount of such timeline data to better understand how newborn resuscitation treatment is given and how it can be improved. The automatic video analysis and timeline generation will be developed for on-site usage, allowing for data-driven simulation and clinical debrief for health-care providers, and paving the way for automated real-time feedback. This brings added value to the medical staff, mothers and newborns, and society at large. Discussion The project is a interdisciplinary collaboration, combining AI, image processing, blockchain and cloud technology, with medical expertise, which will lead to increased competences and capacities in these various fields.
