The marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) reservoir rivals the atmospheric carbon inventory in size. Recent work has suggested that the size of the DOC reservoir may respond to variations in sea temperature and global overturning circulation strength. Moreover, mobilization of marine DOC has been implicated in paleoclimate events including Cryogenian glaciation and Eocene hyperthermals. Despite these suggestions, the dynamics of the marine DOC reservoir are poorly understood, and previous carbon cycle modeling has generally assumed this reservoir to be static. In this study, we utilize an Earth system model of intermediate complexity to assess the response of the marine DOC reservoir to various glacial boundary conditions. Our results indicate that the marine DOC reservoir is responsive to glacial perturbations and may shrink or expand on the order of 10–100 Pg C. In contrast to recent studies that emphasize the importance of DOC degradation in driving the mobility of DOC reservoir, our study indicates the importance of DOC production. In the experiment under full glacial boundary conditions, for example, a 19% drop in net primary production leads to an 81 Pg C reduction in the DOC pool, without which the atmospheric CO2 concentration would have been lower by approximately 38 ppm by dissolved inorganic carbon changes alone. Thus, DOC reservoir variability is necessary to fully account for the simulated changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Our findings based on glacial experiments are corroborated in a different set of simulations using freshwater flux to induce weakening of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. In this study, we used a computer model of the earth's ocean and atmosphere to simulate the response of marine DOC to climate conditions representing the height of Earth's last glacial period. We found that the total amount of marine DOC simulated in our model could vary in response to the specific climate conditions applied and the modeled impacts on ocean biological production. Importantly, we found that these changes in the DOC reservoir are sufficiently large that without it, changes in atmospheric CO2 levels cannot be fully understood. Our results suggest that understanding marine DOC is crucial in understanding global climate changes throughout Earth's history. The community stability is the main ability to resist and be resilient to climate changes. In a world of climate warming and melting glaciers, alpine gravel encroachment was occurring universally and threatening hillside grassland ecosystem. Gravel encroachment caused by climate warming and glacial melting may alter community structure and community stability in alpine meadow. Yet, the effects of climate warming-induced gravel encroachment on grassland communities are unknown. Here, a 1-year short-term field experiment was conducted to explore the early stage drive process of gravel encroachment on community structure and stability at four different gravel encroachment levels 0%, 30%, 60%, and 90% gravel coverage at an alpine meadow on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, by analyzing the changes of dominant species stability and species asynchrony to the simulated gravel encroachment processes. Gravel encroachment rapidly changed the species composition and species ranking of alpine meadow plant community in a short period of time. Specifically, community stability of alpine meadow decreased by 61.78–79.48%, which may be due to the reduced dominant species stability and species asynchrony. Species asynchrony and dominant species stability were reduced by 2.65–17.39% and 46.51–67.97%, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that gravel encroachment presents a severe negative impact on community structure and stability of alpine meadow in the short term, the longer term and comprehensive study should be conducted to accurate prediction of global warming-induced indirect effects on alpine grassland ecosystems. Understanding genetic patterns at the regional level and the environmental influence on them is important for the conservation and sustainable use of economically important plant species. In this study, we focused on Thespesia populnea, a coastal species valued for its ecological and economic benefits across its pantropical distribution range. We aimed to understand the phylogeographic pattern, the current spatial distribution of genetic diversity, and range dynamics of the species with changing environmental conditions to better inform conservation and development actions. We genotyped 482 individuals, collected from 33 natural populations, at five chloroplast DNA loci and identified the influence of historical processes on the contemporary population structure of the species in the Indo-West Pacific (IWP) region. Environmental niche modeling (ENM) was used to identify the species' glacial and future climate refugia. High genetic diversity at the species level was observed. Nearly one-third of the populations showed no polymorphism, possibly due to extinction-recolonization events induced by glacial sea-level changes, as evident from the analysis of demographic history. The evolutionary relationship between the haplotypes suggested a strong phylogeographic structure. The clustering algorithms identified two genetic lineages that diverged around the Pleistocene epoch. The difference between the climatic niches of the two lineages was not significant. The ensembled ENM indicated range expansion of the species in the future. Based on the findings, we proposed sustainable use of genetically diverse populations, outlined measures to preserve the evolutionary potential of the lineages, and identified areas that should be prioritized for conservation actions of this important plant species. Effective moisture (EM) distribution in the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) region is strongly related to regional topography. An understanding of climate change and the interactions between climate variables can help predict future climate variations. Here, we reconstruct a stack EM record for Southwest China over the past 90 kyr using environmental magnetism in lake sediment. The EM in Southwest China at the orbital scale was closely linked to precession‐induced change in North Hemisphere solar insolation, as well as the ISM variability. However, at the glacial‐interglacial scale, it was decoupled with ISM intensity, being wetter during glacial periods (weakened ISM) and drier during interglacial periods (enhanced ISM). Combined with modern meteorological observations, we suggest that the topographical barrier effect and temperature induced dryness are responsible for the decoupling between ISM intensity and EM. The terrestrial topography and temperature strongly influence EM distribution by altering the dynamics of onshore airflow and evapotranspiration. We found that the variation of precession (shifts in the rotational axis of the Earth) and solar insolation are the key contributors to the EM variability at the orbital scale. Unusually, a wetter climate during the glacial period and relatively drier interglacial periods were observed in our records, which is opposite to those found in previous studies (arid glacial and humid interglacial) in monsoon regions, indicating a decoupling pattern between monsoon intensity and EM in study region. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the modern meteorological observations, we conclude that the topography and temperature exert a considerable role in modulating EM distribution and response to the decoupling pattern. Climatic warming following the Last Glacial Maximum caused the southern Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) to begin ∼2,000‐year cycles of retreat and readvance whose cause remains ambiguous. By developing a marine‐calibrated chronology of southern LIS position, we counterintuitively demonstrate that between 17.6 and 11.3 ka, ice advanced during times of northern‐hemisphere warming and retreated during times of northern‐hemisphere cooling. Here we propose a cyclical feedback: Meltwater from ice retreat cooled the northern hemisphere by weakening the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This eventually lead to ice‐sheet readvance, which reduced and rerouted meltwater discharge, and thereby allowed the AMOC to strengthen and the northern hemisphere to warm. Our data suggest that this antiphased ice–climate interaction, paced by ice‐sheet response time, was initiated by synchronous warming and ice retreat ∼18.7–17.6 ka (corresponding to the Erie "Interstade") and reached its apex during the Younger Dryas. Plain Language Summary: Twenty thousand years ago, a colder climate allowed glacial ice to flow from northern and eastern Canada into the Great Lakes region. But when climate began to warm, instead of simply melting from south to north, the margin of this ice front repeatedly retreated and re‐advanced in 2,000‐year cycles. First, we track these advances and retreats using records of ancient Gulf of Mexico water, stored in plankton shells retrieved from a sediment cores. Ice advance redirected water bearing "light" oxygen, with fewer neutrons, from Canada and the Great Lakes into the Mississippi River. When ice retreated, these waters found other courses to the sea, shifting Gulf of Mexico chemistry toward heavier oxygen (carrying more neutrons). Next, we ask why these ice‐margin cycles occurred during a time of monotonically increasing solar radiation to the northern hemisphere. We propose that ice‐sheet melt (during retreat) slowed Atlantic Ocean circulation, causing the northern hemisphere to cool and the ice sheet to gradually regrow. However, this same regrowth reduced meltwater flow to the ocean, causing the northern hemisphere to re‐warm and eventually leading the ice margin to retreat once more. This cycle persisted from approximately 17,600 to 11,300 years ago, until North American ice became too small to sustain this feedback. Damage to speleothems is a common phenomenon in mid-latitude caves, and multiple causes have been proposed. Here we report on one of such type of damage, namely stalagmites that are broken and partially sheared near their base but are still in upright position. Such stalagmites occur in the Obir Caves (Austria) associated with cryogenic cave carbonates, demonstrating the former presence of cave ice. 230Th dating suggests damage to the speleothems during the Last Glacial Maximum. Numerical modelling combined with laboratory measurements demonstrates that internal deformation within a cave ice body cannot fracture stalagmites, even on a steep slope. Instead, temperature changes lead to thermoelastic stresses within an ice body that reach values equaling to and exceeding the tensile strength of even large stalagmites. Differences in thermal expansion coefficients cause a sharp vertical jump in stress between the stalagmite and the surrounding ice body, and the ice lifts the stalagmite as it expands with increasing temperature. This study refutes the previously accepted model that flow of ice breaks stalagmites, and suggests a link between glacial climate variability and corresponding cooling and warming cycles in the subsurface that weaken and eventually fracture stalagmites due to the opposing thermoelastic properties of calcite and ice. The Qilian Mountains, located in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is a sensitive zone of both East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and westerly winds (WW). The evolution history and driving mechanism of the ecosystem and hydrologic cycle in this region on long-term timescales have not yet been clarified. In this study, we comprehensively study the hydrologic and ecological evolution history in the sensitive zone since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) by integrating surface sediments, paleoclimate records, TraCE-21ka transient simulations, and PMIP3-CMIP5 multi-model simulation. Results show that hydrologic and ecological proxies from surface sediments are significantly different from west to east and mainly divided into three sections: the monsoon-affected region in the eastern Qilian Mountains, the intersection region in the central Qilian Mountains, and the westerly-affected region in the western Qilian Mountains. Meanwhile, paleo-ecological and paleohydrologic reconstructions from the surroundings uncover a synchronous climate evolution that the EASM mainly controls the eastern Qilian Mountains and penetrates the central Qilian Mountains in monsoon intensity maximum, while the WW dominates the central and western Qilian Mountains on both glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales. The simulation results further bear out the glacial humid climate in the central and western Qilian Mountains caused by the enhanced WW, and the humidity maximum in the eastern Qilian Mountains controlled by the strong mid-Holocene monsoon. Species' ranges are dynamic, particularly at large temporal scales. The reconstruction of range dynamics has an obvious biogeographical interest and might also help to frame current knowledge on the ecology and conservation of a species within a wider biogeographical context. The Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus is a charismatic high‐altitude species occurring along mountain ranges of the Old World. The species has experienced a global range contraction in the last century mainly due to unintentional poisoning and direct persecution. Despite its declining status and high habitat specialization, little is known about how climate change is impacting the distribution of suitable habitat, or about global past range dynamics of the species. We modelled the current distribution of Bearded Vulture throughout its entire range and projected the Last Glacial Maxima (LGM), Mid‐Holocene (MH) and future distribution under 2070s climate change scenarios. Overall, our models predicted that expansion of suitable areas at more northern latitudes for 2070, mostly in Russia and China, does not compensate for range contraction at more southern latitudes, resulting in a global loss of 15% of suitable habitat. Our fine‐scale predictions of habitat contraction due to climate change will assist in identifying current portions of the range that might be particularly vulnerable in coming years. African populations (34% decrease) and more thermic areas in Asia are the most impacted areas, and should be at the forefront of future monitoring and conservation efforts. Our models suggest that the predicted contraction in habitat suitability during the 21st century largely continues the contraction experienced since the LGM (7% decline), albeit over a much shorter period of time. From a biogeographical perspective, our models suggest that there have not been relevant changes in the arrangement of the main suitable areas for the species since the LGM. Due To the effects of climate change, tourist locations such as glacial landscapes are increasingly becoming last-chance tourism (LCT) destinations. LCT is paradoxical: although visitors to such locations possess high environmental awareness, their travel generates greenhouse gas emissions that threaten these destinations. However, visiting LCT destinations and observing glacial landscapes threatened by climate change may positively affect pro-environmental behaviour. This article aims to explore how experiencing receding glaciers can influence intentions to adopt pro-environmental behaviour. A quantitative survey of 284 visitors to a major glacier tourism site in France (Montenvers-mer-de-Glace) was caried out to test the influence of landscape, emotions, satisfaction, and LCT-related motivations on intentions to adopt pro-environmental behaviours. The results show that landscapes perceived as symbolic of climate change, LCT motivations, and overall satisfaction positively influenced pro-environmental behaviour intentions. Changes in convective activity and hydroclimate over Northeastern Kalimantan are key features to understand glacial to interglacial climate evolution in the center of the West Pacific Warm Pool during the Late Pleistocene to Holocene. We use high-resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanner-derived elemental ratios in sediment Core SO217-18522 (1º 24.106' N, 119º 4.701'E, 975 m water depth) recovered from the northern Makassar Strait to reconstruct changes in precipitation-related weathering and erosion over Northeastern Kalimantan over the last 50 kyr. Enhanced seasonality of rainfall and an extended dry season during Heinrich Stadials (HS4 to HS1) and the Younger Dryas (YD) suggest weakening of the tropical convection associated with a southward shift of the tropical rain belt and the annual mean position of the Intertropical Tropical Convection Zone. Increasing sediment discharge and intensification of convective activity occurred during the early to mid-Holocene during an interval of high Northern Hemisphere insolation, elevated atmospheric pCO2 levels and global warming. Our reconstructions in comparison with regional terrestrial and marine records highlight the high spatial variability of Kalimantan hydroclimate on millennial to glacial-interglacial timescales. Disentangling the effects of glaciers and climate on vegetation is complicated by the confounding role that climate plays in both systems. We reconstructed changes in vegetation occurring over the Holocene at Jøkelvatnet, a lake located directly downstream from the Langfjordjøkel glacier in northern Norway. We used a sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) metabarcoding dataset of 38 samples from a lake sediment core spanning 10,400 years using primers targeting the P6 loop of the trnL (UAA) intron. A total of 193 plant taxa were identified revealing a pattern of continually increasing richness over the time period. Vegetation surveys conducted around Jøkelvatnet show a high concordance with the taxa identified through sedaDNA metabarcoding. We identified four distinct vegetation assemblage zones with transitions at ca. 9.7, 8.4 and 4.3 ka with the first and last mirroring climatic shifts recorded by the Langfjordjøkel glacier. Soil disturbance trait values of the vegetation increased with glacial activity, suggesting that the glacier had a direct impact on plants growing in the catchment. Temperature optimum and moisture trait values correlated with both glacial activity and reconstructed climatic variables showing direct and indirect effects of climate change on the vegetation. In contrast to other catchments without an active glacier, the vegetation at Jøkelvatnet has displayed an increased sensitivity to climate change throughout the Middle and Late Holocene. Beyond the direct impact of climate change on arctic and alpine vegetation, our results suggest the ongoing disappearance of glaciers will have an additional effect on plant communities. The Indian Ocean exhibits multiple modes of interannual climate variability, whose future behaviour is uncertain. Recent analysis of glacial climates has uncovered an additional El Niño-like equatorial mode in the Indian Ocean, which could also emerge in future warm states. Here we explore changes in the tropical Indian Ocean simulated by the Paleoclimate Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP4). These simulations are performed by an ensemble of models contributing to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 and over four coordinated experiments: three past periods – the mid-Holocene (6000 years ago), the Last Glacial Maximum (21 000 years ago), the last interglacial (127 000 years ago) – and an idealized forcing scenario to examine the impact of greenhouse forcing. The two interglacial experiments are used to characterize the role of orbital variations in the seasonal cycle, whilst the other pair focus on responses to large changes in global temperature. The Indian Ocean Basin Mode (IOBM) is damped in both the mid-Holocene and last interglacial, with the amount related to the damping of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation in the Pacific. No coherent changes in the strength of the IOBM are seen with global temperature changes; neither are changes in the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) nor the Niño-like mode. Under orbital forcing, the IOD robustly weakens during the mid-Holocene experiment, with only minor reductions in amplitude during the last interglacial. Orbital changes do impact the SST pattern of the Indian Ocean Dipole, with the cold pole reaching up to the Equator and extending along it. Climate during the last glacial period was marked by abrupt instability on millennial timescales that included large swings of temperature in and around Greenland (Daansgard–Oeschger events) and smaller, more gradual changes in Antarctica (AIM events). Less is known about the existence and nature of similar variability during older glacial periods, especially during the early Pleistocene when glacial cycles were dominantly occurring at 41 kyr intervals compared to the much longer and deeper glaciations of the more recent period. Here, we report a continuous millennially resolved record of stable isotopes of planktic and benthic foraminifera at IODP Site U1385 (the "Shackleton Site") from the southwestern Iberian margin for the last 1.5 million years, which includes the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT). Our results demonstrate that millennial climate variability (MCV) was a persistent feature of glacial climate, both before and after the MPT. Prior to 1.2 Ma in the early Pleistocene, the amplitude of MCV was modulated by the 41 kyr obliquity cycle and increased when axial tilt dropped below 23.5 ∘ and benthic δ18O exceeded ∼3.8 ‰ (corrected to Uvigerina), indicating a threshold response to orbital forcing. Afterwards, MCV became focused mainly on the transitions into and out of glacial states (i.e. inceptions and terminations) and during times of intermediate ice volume. After 1.2 Ma, obliquity continued to play a role in modulating the amplitude of MCV, especially during times of glacial inceptions, which are always associated with declining obliquity. A non-linear role for obliquity is also indicated by the appearance of multiples (82, 123 kyr) and combination tones (28 kyr) of the 41 kyr cycle. Near the end of the MPT (∼0.65 Ma), obliquity modulation of MCV amplitude wanes as quasi-periodic 100 kyr and precession power increase, coinciding with the growth of oversized ice sheets on North America and the appearance of Heinrich layers in North Atlantic sediments. Whereas the planktic δ18O of Site U1385 shows a strong resemblance to Greenland temperature and atmospheric methane (i.e. Northern Hemisphere climate), millennial changes in benthic δ18O closely follow the temperature history of Antarctica for the past 800 kyr. The phasing of millennial planktic and benthic δ18O variation is similar to that observed for MIS 3 throughout much of the record, which has been suggested to mimic the signature of the bipolar seesaw – i.e. an interhemispheric asymmetry between the timing of cooling in Antarctica and warming in Greenland. The Iberian margin isotopic record suggests that bipolar asymmetry was a robust feature of interhemispheric glacial climate variations for at least the past 1.5 Ma despite changing glacial boundary conditions. A strong correlation exists between millennial increases in planktic δ18O (cooling) and decreases in benthic δ13C , indicating that millennial variations in North Atlantic surface temperature are mirrored by changes in deep-water circulation and remineralization of carbon in the abyssal ocean. We find strong evidence that climate variability on millennial and orbital scales is coupled across different timescales and interacts in both directions, which may be important for linking internal climate dynamics and external astronomical forcing. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 23-19 ka BP), marked by the greatest global ice volume expansion and lowest sea level during the last glacial period, is a critical epoch for comprehending historical climate variability. It has been extensively utilized as a reference point for assessing abrupt glacial climate shifts and the underlying external influences in climate model simulations. Although numerous proxies have advanced our comprehension of the LGM global climate, the evolution of LGM hydroclimate in densely populated monsoonal eastern China remains ambiguous, mainly due to complicated rainfall patterns and limited hydroclimate records. To address this shortcoming, here we present a high-resolution multiproxy speleothem record depicting the evolution of hydroclimate in central China spanning from 30 to 18 ka BP. Our hydroclimate proxies (δ13C and Mg/Ca), combined with other terrestrial records in eastern China, reveal a wet central southern China during the LGM while a dry northern China. The iTraCE simulation further revealed positive summer (JJA) and winter (DJF) net precipitation contributions in central southern China during the LGM, linked with orbital forcing and enhanced exposure of the low-latitude continental shelves. The impacts of glacial retreat on diets of ascidians, one of the filter feeders and a major component of the benthic-pelagic energy pathway, remain unclear. We analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of four dominant ascidian species and five potential food sources in Marian Cove, a deglaciating fjord in West Antarctica. Microphytobenthos was a major food source for ascidians regardless of proximity to the glacier, but phytoplankton contribution decreased closer to the glacier. Particularly near the glacier, microphytobenthos formed visible bushes on the surface of ascidians providing an easily accessible potential food source. The diet of Molgula pedunculata changed with spatial variations in food sources influenced by glaciers, whereas Cnemidocarpa verrucosa , which exhibits a squirting behavior, showed a consistent diet primarily contributed by microphytobenthos regardless of glacial impact. Glacial lakes are expanding exponentially in the cryospheric environment of the Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalayas (HKH). Rapid glacier melting due to an above mean global annual temperature increase in HKH is attributed as the main reason for the expansion of the glacial lakes. The rapid expansion of glacial lakes increases the risk of future Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) events in the HKH. In the present study, glacial lake inventories for the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra (IGB) river basins in the HKH were generated for 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020 using Landsat (TM & OLI) at the sub-basin level to understand the spatio-temporal and regional patterns of glacial lakes dynamics, elevational evolution, and changes in the typology. We mapped 17,641 glacial lakes (area: 1082.57 ± 192.601 km2) in 1990, 18,206 (area: 1120.95 ± 198.49 km2) in 2000, 18,399 (area: 1147.12 ± 201.26 km2) in 2010, and 19,284 (area: 1191.81 ± 209.21 km2) in 2020. Between 1990 and 2020, IGB basins showed an increase of 9.31 % in total number and 10.09 % in total area of glacial lakes. In 2020, the Brahmaputra basin had the maximum total area (area: 763.59 ± 132.14 km2), followed by Indus basin (area: 217.47 ± 43.39 km2) and the Ganga basin (area: 210.74 ± 33.66 km2). However, between 1990 and 2020, glacial lakes in the Ganga basin (n: 22.08 %) had the highest growth rate, followed by the Indus basin (n: 14.73 %) and the Brahmaputra basin (n: 4.41 %). In 2020, 76.11 % of glacial lakes were end-moraine-dammed M(e) lakes, followed by other bedrock-dammed B(o) lakes (16.45 %), supraglacial lakes (2.79 %), lateral moraine-dammed M(l) lakes (2 %), cirque B(c) lakes (1.06 %), other moraine-dammed M(o) lakes (0.38 %), and other glacial (O) lakes (1.18 %). Glacial responses to climate change exhibit considerable heterogeneity. Although global glaciers are generally thinning and retreat, glaciers in the Karakoram region are distinct in their surging or advancing, exhibiting nearly zero or positive mass balance—a phenomenon known as the Karakoram Anomaly. This anomaly has sparked significant scientific interest, prompting extensive research into glacier anomalies. However, the dynamics of the Karakoram anomaly, particularly its evolution and persistence, remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we employed Landsat reflectance data and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD43A3 albedo products to developed high-resolution albedo retrieval models using two machine learning (ML) regressions––random forest regression (RFR) and back-propagation neural network regression (BPNNR). The optimal BPNNR model (Pearson correlation coefficient [ r ] = 0.77–0.97, unbiased root mean squared error [ ubRMSE ] = 0.056–0.077, RMSE = 0.055–0.168, Bias = −0.149 ∼ −0.001) was implemented on the Google Earth Engine cloud-based platform to estimate summer albedo at a 30-m resolution for the Karakoram region from 1990 to 2021. Validation against in-situ albedo measurements on three glaciers (Batura, Mulungutti and Yala Glacier) demonstrated that the model achieved an average ubRMSE of 0.069 (p < 0.001), with RMSE and ubRMSE improvements of 0.027 compared to MODIS albedo products. The high-resolution data was then used to identify firn/snow extents using a 0.37 threshold, facilitating the extraction of long-term firn-line altitudes (FLA) to indicate the glacier dynamics. Our findings revealed that a consistent decline in summer albedo across the Karakoram over the past three decades, signifying a darkening of glacier surfaces that increased solar radiation absorption and intensified melting. The reduction in albedo showed spatial heterogeneity, with slower reductions in the western and central Karakoram (−0.0005–0.0005 yr−1) compared to the eastern Karakoram (−0.006 ∼ −0.01 yr−1). Notably, surge- or advance-type glaciers, avalanche-fed glaciers and debris-covered glaciers exhibited slower albedo reduction rates, which decreased further with increasing glacier size. Additionally, albedo reduction accelerated with altitude, peaking near the equilibrium-line altitude. Fluctuations in the albedo-derived FLAs suggest a transition in the dynamics of Karakoram glaciers from anomalous behavior to retreat. Most glaciers exhibited anomalous behavior from 1995 to 2010, peaking in 2003, but they have shown signs of retreat since the 2010s, marking the end of the Karakoram anomaly. Peatlands, an important organic carbon reservoir, play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. The carbon accumulation of peatlands, reflected by net primary productivity (NPP), can have an impact on global carbon cycling and climate change. The late Carboniferous - early Permian is an icehouse period, during which numerous thick coal beds were accumulated in the North China Block (NCB) located within a low-latitude area, providing an opportunity for studying the carbon cycling under the glacial and interglacial climates. In this study, spectral analysis was performed on the natural gamma-ray (GR) logs of the Benxi, Taiyuan, and Shanxi formations of the late Carboniferous to early Permian in a borehole section located within the Ordos Basin in western NCB. Cyclic signals related to astronomical orbital parameters were identified, including long eccentricity (∼405 kyr), short eccentricity (∼125 kyr and ∼ 95 kyr), and obliquity (∼35.5 kyr). A floating astronomical time scale was established by using the long eccentricity signal, and this time scale was further used to constrain the durations of the accumulation of coal-forming paleo-peatlands. The paleo-peatland for the C 8+9 coal seam (9 m thick) of the Taiyuan Formation lasted approximately 203 kyr, and the paleo-peatland for the C5 coal seam (4 m thick) of the Shanxi Formation lasted approximately 46 kyr. Using this timeframe and an estimation of carbon loss during coalification, the carbon accumulation rates of the late Carboniferous - early Permian low-latitude peatlands are calculated to be 104.7 ± 14.9 g· C ·m−2·a−1for the C 8+9 coal seam and 192.6 ± 11.6 g· C ·m−2·a−1for the C 5 coal seam. The NPP of the paleo-peatlands, which deducts a part of the carbon loss caused by the loss of CO 2 and CH 4 , can be calculated from the carbon accumulation rates. The calculated average NPP of the paleo-peatlands for the C 8+9 seam was 199 ± 28 g· C ·m−2·a−1, and that of the C 5 seam was 366 ± 22 g· C ·m−2·a−1. In combination with the absolute time scale calibrated by high-precision U Pb dates from Palougou section in western NCB, the depositional time of the investigated strata was constrained to be from 300.1 ± 0.5 Ma to 294.3 ± 0.5 Ma. The coal seams of the late Carboniferous to early Permian in the NCB correspond to an interglacial interval around ∼298 Ma. The peatland with a lower NPP corresponds to the warming stage and the peatland with a higher NPP corresponds to the cooling stage. This implies that a lower NPP of paleo-peatland tends to be less efficient in carbon storage, and could not reduce the atmospheric CO 2 substantially. In contrast, a higher NPP of paleo-peatland tends to accelerate carbon fixation, leading to temperature decrease and the termination of interglacial interval in early Permian. In the French north‐western Alps, several lakes of glacial origin, such as Aiguebelette and La Thuile, present some mass‐transport deposits within their sedimentary sequences. These event layers can result from lake sediment destabilization eventually triggered by earthquakes. On Lake Aiguebelette, based on sedimentological, geochemical and magnetic analyses, and high‐resolution seismic and bathymetric surveys a ca 1 m thick event layer was identified in the deepest lake basin and a synchronous ca 2 cm thick deposit in the shallow basin. Age‐depth models based on radiocarbon ages reveal that both mass‐transport deposits in Lake Aiguebelette occurred around the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene climatic transition (i.e. 11 700 cal bp) time range. In Lake La Thuile, located 30 km away, unique mass‐transport deposits (translational slide type) were recorded at the same time range in sedimentary records. Additionally, high‐resolution seismic profiles previously acquired in Lake Annecy and Lake Bourget support the hypothesis of significant mass‐transport deposits occurring at the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene time range. These outcomes on four north‐western peri‐Alpine and Alpine lakes highlight the regional occurrence of mass‐transport deposits in the Younger Dryas – Early Holocene time range. Seismic and rockfall events are discussed as potential sources of these significant and similarly aged mass‐transport deposits. Based on this study and a literature review, the authors suggest that mechanisms induced by rapid climate change and glacial retreat, such as crustal rebound and erosional unloading, could favour the triggering of earthquakes and rockfall events. In the case of mass‐transport deposits archived in north‐western Alpine lakes during this time period, this study favours the hypothesis of increased seismicity as the primary source driving process involved. During the last glacial cycle (LGC), ice sheets covered large parts of Eurasia and North America, which resulted in ∼120 m of sea level change. Ice sheet–climate interactions have considerable influence on temperature and precipitation patterns and therefore need to be included when simulating this time period. Ideally, ice sheet–climate interactions are simulated by a high-resolution Earth system model. While these models are capable of simulating climates at a certain point in time, such as the pre-industrial (PI) or the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 21 000 years ago), a full transient glacial cycle is currently computationally unfeasible as it requires a too-large amount of computation time. Nevertheless, ice sheet models require forcing that captures the gradual change in climate over time to calculate the accumulation and melt of ice and its effect on ice sheet extent and volume changes. Here we simulate the LGC using an ice sheet model forced by LGM and PI climates. The gradual change in climate is modelled by transiently interpolating between pre-calculated results from a climate model for the LGM and the PI. To assess the influence of ice sheet–climate interactions, we use two different interpolation methods: the climate matrix method, which includes a temperature–albedo and precipitation–topography feedback, and the glacial index method, which does not. To investigate the sensitivity of the results to the prescribed climate forcing, we use the output of several models that are part of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project Phase III (PMIP3). In these simulations, ice volume is prescribed, and the climate is reconstructed with a general circulation model (GCM). Here we test those models by using their climate to drive an ice sheet model over the LGC. We find that the ice volume differences caused by the climate forcing exceed the differences caused by the interpolation method. Some GCMs produced unrealistic LGM volumes, and only four resulted in reasonable ice sheets, with LGM Northern Hemisphere sea level contribution ranging between 74–113 m with respect to the present day. The glacial index and climate matrix methods result in similar ice volumes at the LGM but yield a different ice evolution with different ice domes during the inception phase of the glacial cycle and different sea level rates during the deglaciation phase. Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures impact precipitation across the basin through coupled ocean‐atmosphere responses to changes in climate. To understand the hydroclimate response over the western Indian Ocean and equatorial east Africa to different forcing mechanisms, we present four new proxy reconstructions from core VM19‐193 (2.98°N, 51.47°E) that span the last 250 ky. Sub‐surface water temperatures (Sub‐T; TEX86) show strong precessional (23 ky) variability that is primarily influenced by maximum incoming solar radiation (insolation) during the Northern Hemisphere spring season, likely indicating that local insolation dominates the upper water column at this tropical location over time. Leaf waxes, on the other hand, reflect two different precipitation signals: δ13Cwax (in phase with boreal fall insolation) is likely reflecting vegetation changes in response to local rainfall over east Africa, whereas δDprecip (primarily driven by boreal summer insolation) represents changes in regional circulation associated with the summer monsoon. Glacial‐interglacial changes in ocean temperatures support glacial shelf exposure over the Maritime Continent in the eastern Indian Ocean and the subsequent weakening of the Indian Walker Circulation as a mechanism driving 100 ky climate variability across the tropical Indo‐Pacific. Additionally, the 100 ky spectral power in δDprecip supports a basin‐wide weakening of summer monsoon circulation in response to glacial climates. Overall, the proxy records from VM19‐193 indicate that both precession and glacial‐interglacial cycles exert control over hydroclimate at this tropical location. The profile of the Lipowo palaeolake (NE Poland) preserves a record of environmental and climate changes from the Last Glacial Termination (16.5k cal ka BP), stretching from the Oldest Dryas to the youngest Allerød warm oscillation. In this interdisciplinary study of the lacustrine succession at Lipowo, we used biological and geochemical indicators and multiproxy analyses to reconstruct environmental changes in the lake ecosystem, such as mollusc, zooplankton and vegetation development, trophic state, water temperature and water level. Four cold and four warm climate oscillations of different durations were identified on this basis: the Older Dryas climate deterioration and two short‐term coolings within the Allerød Interstadial, separated by warm periods in the Bølling and Allerød. The covering of the lake series by diamicton deposits from the melting of dead‐ice blocks is a particularly interesting and rare phenomenon for a postglacial area. The hydrological system of the catchment was generally closed, with a periodically opening and existing flow‐through lake. Over the period of the lake's existence, vegetation changed in general from steppe tundra to forest with birch and pine. For most of this time, the palaeolake was mainly oligotrophic, with increased productivity and a higher trophic level only notable during the middle Bølling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During abrupt climate changes of the last glacial period paleorecords show large amplitude changes in the dust cycle. We use Earth System model simulations to evaluate processes operating across these events. Idealized Heinrich stadial‐like simulations show a southwards migration of tropical rainfall that dries the Sahel and reduces wet deposition causing a widespread enhancement of tropical dust loading. However, several discrepancies with marine core dust deposition reconstructions are evident. Simulations with a more limited freshwater forcing (0.4 Sv instead of 1.0 Sv) and weaker cooling over the North Atlantic (less than 3°C) show a switch in sign of the stadial dust deposition anomaly in several regions, improving agreement with paleorecords. The simulated dust cycle therefore displays in places a non‐linear response to abrupt change. The global‐mean stadial dust radiative forcing in the more realistic simulations is around −0.2 to −0.6 W m−2 and so could represent an amplifying feedback during these events. Plain Language Summary: Mineral dust in the atmosphere is mostly sourced from arid regions like the Sahara desert. The amount and geographical spread of this dust in the atmosphere is sensitive to environmental conditions such as drought. Paleoclimate records show that rapid cooling events centered on the North Atlantic during the last ice‐age also saw large increases in the rate of dust deposited over the ocean. Earth System models are a computational tool that can be used to understand the links between climate and the dust cycle. Using a series of such simulations we found that abrupt cooling events in the North Atlantic can lead to a massive increase in dust over the equatorial (tropical) regions. However, the model's response is in many places non‐linear, meaning that the change in dust is very sensitive to the magnitude of the climate changes occurring. This non‐linearity is mostly due to interactions between changes in the water cycle and the dust. We show that a less severe cooling produces a more realistic dust response when evaluated against paleo‐dust records. Since dust scatters incoming sunlight, increased atmospheric dust during these events may have amplified and even extended the cold phases. Holocene environmental and climate change on the Tibetan Plateau is intensively studied and discussed with the aim to better understand the factors controlling the hydrology of individual river catchments and especially the availability of water which is of utmost significance for the communities downstream in times of rapid climate change. Thus, a late glacial and Holocene sediment record from Lake Heihai in the Kunlun-Pass region was investigated using ostracod and geochemical analyses. Cold and dry conditions were inferred between ca. 12.9 and 12.3 cal ka BP and higher temperatures before and afterwards. The cold spell probably corresponds to the Younger Dryas (YD) event in the North Atlantic region. Warmer and wetter conditions with highest lake levels and decreased lake-water salinity were recorded from ca. 10.8 to 7.0 cal ka BP when the summer monsoon was strengthened. The cold 8.2 cal ka BP event is not significantly recorded in the region probably due to the predominance of the summer monsoon over the westerlies. A declined lake level and increased lake-water salinity as the result of cold and dry conditions are inferred from ca. 7.0 to 4.5 cal ka BP when the strengthening of the mid-latitude westerly circulation probably triggered glacier advances in the catchment. An even lower lake level existed during cold conditions with glacier advances from ca. 4.5 to 1.2 cal ka BP. The level of Lake Heihai rose again after ca. 1.2 cal ka BP due to warmer conditions, causing the retreat of glaciers and higher runoff. Our record from the Kunlun Pass region provides further evidence for the catchment-specific response of hydrographical systems which are partly controlled by glaciers as major water sources. Heinrich-type ice-sheet surges are one of the prominent signals of glacial climate variability. They are characterised as abrupt, quasi-periodic episodes of ice-sheet instabilities during which large numbers of icebergs are released from the Laurentide ice sheet. The mechanisms controlling the timing and occurrence of Heinrich-type ice-sheet surges remain poorly constrained to this day. Here, we use a coupled ice sheet–solid Earth model to identify and quantify the importance of boundary forcing for the surge cycle length of Heinrich-type ice-sheet surges for two prominent ice streams of the Laurentide ice sheet – the land-terminating Mackenzie ice stream and the marine-terminating Hudson ice stream. Both ice streams show responses of similar magnitude to surface mass balance and geothermal heat flux perturbations, but Mackenzie ice stream is more sensitive to ice surface temperature perturbations, a fact likely caused by the warmer climate in this region. Ocean and sea-level forcing as well as different frequencies of the same forcing have a negligible effect on the surge cycle length. The simulations also highlight the fact that only a certain parameter space exists under which ice-sheet oscillations can be maintained. Transitioning from an oscillatory state to a persistent ice streaming state can result in an ice volume loss of up to 30 % for the respective ice stream drainage basin under otherwise constant climate conditions. We show that Mackenzie ice stream is susceptible to undergoing such a transition in response to all tested positive climate perturbations. Climate change is causing glaciers to retreat across much of the Himalaya, leading to a rapid shift of the vegetation cover to higher altitudes. However, the rate of vegetation shift with respect to glacier retreat, climate change, and topographic parameters is not empirically quantified. Using remote sensing measurements, we estimate (a) the rate of glacier-ice mass loss, (b) the upward vegetation line shift rate, (c) regional greening trends, and (d) a relationship between the factors influencing the greenness of the landscape and vegetation change in the Himalaya. We find that the glacier mass loss rate is 10.9 ± 1.2 Gt/yr and the mean vegetation line shifts upward in altitude by 7–28 ± 1.5 m/yr. Considering the land use/land cover change pattern, the grassland area is found to be expanding the most, particularly in the de-glaciated regions. Seed and soil microbiomes strongly affect plant performance, and these effects can scale-up to influence plant community structure. However, seed and soil microbial community composition are variable across landscapes, and different microbial communities can differentially influence multiple plant metrics (biomass, germination rate), and community stabilizing mechanisms. We determined how microbiomes inside seeds and in soils varied among alpine plant species and communities that differed in plant species richness and density. Across 10 common alpine plant species, we found a total of 318 bacterial and 128 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) associated with seeds, with fungal richness affected by plant species identity more than sampling location. However, seed microbes had only marginally significant effects on plant germination success and timing. In contrast, soil microbes associated with two different plant species had significant effects on plant biomass, and their effect depended both on the plant species and the location the soils were sampled from. This led to significant changes in plant-soil feedback at different locations that varied in plant density and richness, such that plant-soil feedback favored plant species coexistence in some locations and opposed coexistence at other locations. Importantly, we found that coexistence-facilitating feedback was associated with low plant species richness, suggesting that soil microbes may promote the diversity of colonizing plants during the course of climate change and glacial recession. We present downcore records of redox-sensitive authigenic uranium (U) and manganese (Mn) concentrations based on five marine sediment cores spanning a meridional transect encompassing the Subantarctic and Antarctic zones in the southwestern Indian Ocean covering the last glacial cycle. These records signal lower bottom water oxygenation during glacial climate intervals and generally higher oxygenation during warm periods, consistent with climate-related changes in deep-ocean remineralized carbon storage. Regional changes in the export of siliceous phytoplankton to the deep sea may have entailed a secondary influence on oxygen levels at the water–sediment interface, especially in the Subantarctic Zone. The rapid reoxygenation during the deglaciation is in line with increased ventilation and enhanced upwelling after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which in combination conspired to transfer previously sequestered remineralized carbon to the surface ocean and the atmosphere, contributing to propel the Earth's climate out of the last ice age. Ice cores from the northwestern Tibetan Plateau (NWTP) contain long records of regional climate variability, but refrozen meltwater and dust in these cores has hampered development of robust timescales. Here, we introduce an approach to dating the ice via the isotopic composition of atmospheric O2 in air bubbles (δ18Oatm), along with annual layer counting and radiocarbon dating. We provide a robust chronology for water isotope records (δ18Oice and d-excess) from three ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in the NWTP. The measurement of δ18Oatm, although common in polar ice core timescales, has rarely been used on ice cores from low-latitude, high-altitude glaciers due to (1) low air pressure, (2) the common presence of refrozen melt that adds dissolved gases and reduces the amount of air available for analysis, and (3) the respiratory consumption of molecular oxygen (O2) by micro-organisms in the ice, which fractionates the δ18O of O2 from the atmospheric value. Here, we make corrections for melt and respiration to address these complications. The resulting records of water isotopes from the Guliya ice cores reveal climatic variations over the last 15,000 y, the timings of which correspond to those observed in independently dated lake and speleothem records and confirm that the Guliya ice cap existed before the Holocene. The millennial-scale drivers of δ18Oice are complex and temporally variable; however, Guliya δ18Oice values since the mid-20th century are the highest since the beginning of the Holocene and have increased with regional air temperature. Tertiary relicts often show evolutionary stasis in morphology and ecology and have been hypothesized to retain stable population sizes in refugia. However, recent studies have reported that some relicts evolutionarily shifted their physiology, ecology, and morphology and experienced various patterns of demography. To understand the historical survival of relict plants, a multidimensional study investigating the evolution of ecological and morphological traits as well as population demographic history is needed. The genus Tanakaea (Saxifragaceae) comprises two species in China and Japan. These species share most vegetative characteristics and are sometimes treated as a single species. The distribution pattern is relictual, as the populations are confined to small areas in mesic warm temperate forests less influenced by Quaternary glacial climates. Focusing on the relictual plant group, this study tested the hypotheses of evolutionary stasis and population stability in long‐term refugia. Genetic analyses using plastome sequences and genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphisms revealed divergence of the two species approximately 6.8 million years ago and strong genetic differentiation of the regional populations. Demographic analysis revealed that almost all populations retained stable population sizes during glacial–interglacial climate changes, supporting the traditional view. However, morphological assessments revealed a simultaneous shift in breeding systems (from hermaphrodite to dioecy/non‐clonal to clonal reproduction) in Japanese species and intraspecific differentiation of leaf traits. Sea ice decline in the North Atlantic and Nordic Seas has been proposed to contribute to the repeated abrupt atmospheric warmings recorded in Greenland ice cores during the last glacial period, known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. However, the understanding of how sea ice changes were coupled with abrupt climate changes during D-O events has remained incomplete due to a lack of suitable high-resolution sea ice proxy records from northwestern North Atlantic regions. Here, we present a subdecadal-scale bromine enrichment (Brenr) record from the NEEM ice core (Northwest Greenland) and sediment core biomarker records to reconstruct the variability of seasonal sea ice in the Baffin Bay and Labrador Sea over a suite of D-O events between 34 and 42 ka. Our results reveal repeated shifts between stable, multiyear sea ice (MYSI) conditions during cold stadials and unstable, seasonal sea ice conditions during warmer interstadials. The shift from stadial to interstadial sea ice conditions occurred rapidly and synchronously with the atmospheric warming over Greenland, while the amplitude of high-frequency sea ice fluctuations increased through interstadials. Our findings suggest that the rapid replacement of widespread MYSI with seasonal sea ice amplified the abrupt climate warming over the course of D-O events and highlight the role of feedbacks associated with late-interstadial seasonal sea ice expansion in driving the North Atlantic ocean-climate system back to stadial conditions. Vaccinium myrtillus is a dwarf shrub of the Ericaceae family with a Palearctic distribution, associated with temperate and cold humid climates. It is widespread on the European continent; on the Iberian Peninsula it is located on Atlantic climate mountains and glacial relicts. In Portugal, we find scattered and interesting populations; however, the majority of them are threatened by climate change and wildfires. Given that, the objective of this study is to determine the rhizospheric and root bacterial communities of this plant in the southernmost regions, and, consequently, its potential range and ability to be used as a biofertilizer. In this work, metabarcoding of 16S rRNA gene showed that the endophytic bacterial diversity is dependent on the plant and selected by it according to the observed alpha and beta diversity. Moreover, a culturomic approach allowed 142 different strains to be isolated, some of them being putative new species. Additionally, some strains belonging to the genera Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, Paraburkholderia, and Caballeronia showed significant potential to be applied as multifunctional biofertilizers since they present good plant growth-promoting (PGP) mechanisms, high colonization capacities, and an increase in vegetative parameters in blueberry and tomato plants. The Asian summer monsoon (ASM), controlled by tropical ocean‐atmosphere systems, and the westerlies, directly linked to high‐latitude climates, interact in mid‐latitude East Asia. Located at a climate junction, the northeastern Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is a sensitive zone for the interaction of the westerlies and ASM. In the current work, we present a new loess data set from the northeastern QTP since the last deglaciation, including grain size, stable isotope (δ13Corg and δ18Ocarb), total organic carbon, total nitrogen, magnetic susceptibility, and mineral composition. The PMIP3‐CMIP5 multi‐model ensemble and TraCE‐21ka transient simulation are used synthetically to analyze climate mechanisms. All proxies suggest instable glacial climate and stable interglacial climate in the northeastern QTP. The coarser grain size during the last deglaciation compared with the Holocene reflects intensified westerlies controlled by the weakening of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and existing ice sheets. More positive δ18Ocarb values during abrupt cooling events [Heinrich event 1 (H1) and the Younger Dryas (YD)] indicate the effect of a weakened monsoon triggered by the low‐latitude solar insolation and sea surface temperature. Therefore, the anti‐phase pattern between the ASM and westerlies is the primary reason for differences in climate stability. Moreover, low temperature favors the predomination of C3 plants and the development of permafrost, leading to more negative δ13Corg values and fine grain size during the H1 and YD. Taken together, the anti‐phase relationship between the westerlies and ASM emphasizes the complicated dynamic characteristics of atmospheric systems in the mid‐latitudes and the challenges for future predictions. Under global warming, clarifying the interactions of the westerlies and ASM is critical to understanding the pattern and mechanism of climate change in mid‐latitudes. Therefore, the comprehensive analysis of surface sediments, paleoclimate records, and paleoclimate simulation on long‐term timescales are conducted in the northeastern Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau which is a sensitive zone for the synergistic effect of the westerlies and ASM. Asplenium scolopendrium is distributed in northern temperate forests with many global biogeographic disjunctions. The species complex of A. scolopendrium has been generated by spatial segregation coupled with divergent evolution. We elucidated the biogeographic history of the A. scolopendrium complex by exploring its origin, dispersal and evolution, thus providing insights into the evolutionary history of the Tertiary floras with northern pan-temperate disjunct distributions. The results revealed that all infraspecific taxa descended from a widely distributed common ancestor in the Northern Hemisphere. This pan-temperate ancestral population formed by unidirectional westward dispersal from European origins primarily during the Early Eocene when the Earth's climate was much warmer than today. The splitting of European, American and East Asian lineages occurred during the Early Miocene due to geo-climatic vicariances. Polyploidy events in the American ancestral populations created additional reproductive barriers. The star-shaped haplotypes in each continent indicated that local disjunctions also led to derived genotypes with potential to diverge into different taxa. This intracontinental lineage splitting is likely related to latitudinal range shift and habitat fragmentation caused by glacial cycles and climate change during the Pleistocene. The climate of the southwestern North America has experienced profound changes between wet and dry phases over the past 200 Kyr. To better constrain the timing, magnitude, and paleoenvironmental impacts of these changes in hydroclimate, we conducted a multiproxy biomarker study from samples collected from a new 77 m sediment core (SLAPP‐SRLS17) drilled in Searles Lake, California. Here, we use biomarkers and pollen to reconstruct vegetation, lake conditions, and climate. We find that δD values of long chain n‐alkanes are dominated by glacial to interglacial changes that match nearby Devils Hole calcite δ18O variability, suggesting both archives predominantly reflect precipitation isotopes. However, precipitation isotopes do not simply covary with evidence for wet‐dry changes in vegetation and lake conditions, indicating a partial disconnect between large scale atmospheric circulation tracked by precipitation isotopes and landscape moisture availability. Increased crenarchaeol production and decreased evidence for methane cycling reveal a 10 Kyr interval of a fresh, productive, and well‐mixed lake during Termination II, corroborating evidence for a paleolake highstand from shorelines and spillover deposits in downstream Panamint Basin and Death Valley during the end of the penultimate (Tahoe) glacial (140–130 ka). At the same time brGDGTs yield the lowest temperature estimates (mean months above freezing = 9°C ± 3°C) of the 200 Kyr record. These limnological conditions are not replicated elsewhere in the 200 Kyr record, suggesting that the Heinrich stadial 11 highstand was wetter than the last glacial maximum and Heinrich 1 (18–15 ka). Plain Language Summary: Searles Valley in the Mojave Desert, California, contains a saltpan, the remnants of a former lake. Shoreline features show that the former lake was at times 274 m deep. We studied the ancient lake mud and salt deposits below the valley floor to a depth of 77 m in a sediment core drilled in 2017. The remains of microbes and plants allow us to reconstruct past climate conditions. We find that during cooler glacial periods, conifer forests covered the landscape and plant wax in the core records rainfall that is chemically different from today. These differences are similarly recorded in nearby cave deposits, suggesting changing storm tracks. The wettest climates were found in the cool climate of the penultimate glacial (about 135,000 years ago) when Searles Lake vigorously overflowed into Panamint Basin and Death Valley. At present, the Basin and Range of the western USA is arid, but geologic studies show evidence of past wetness. The timing of these wetter conditions reveals a close association with glacial conditions. This association has led to the hypothesis of a causal link between glacial climate and regional wetness, but poor age control on the onset of regional wetness thwarts a test of this hypothesis. Here we determine the start of the most recent interval of persistent wetness in the Mono Basin, which is a hydrologically closed depression that sits at the west-central edge of the Basin and Range. The most recent emergence of persistent wetness in the Mono Basin is stratigraphically correlated with the depositional age of Ash 19--a rhyolitic ash bed that represents the oldest tephra of the Wilson Creek Formation and one of the earliest-known products of explosive volcanic activity from the Mono Craters. We constrain the depositional age of Ash 19 by using the U/Th disequilibrium dating method to date carbonates that are younger and older than Ash 19. Our U/Th dating results show that Ash 19 was deposited before the formation of a cross-cutting carbonate bed dated to 69.2 ± 0.3 ka but after an underlying carbonate tufa dated to 67.4 ± 3.5 ka, which suggests that the start of wetness in the Mono Basin was contemporary with the inception of the Last Glaciation--the beginning of Marine Isotope Stage 4--at ca. 70 ka. A unique regional climate progression, ca 14.2-11.5 cal ka BP, in the eastern Great Lakes region of North America is suggested by subfossil logs, high-resolution 14C dates, and established proxy records in New York, USA. The progression began with a northern boreal-type climate ca. 14.2-13.1 ka coeval with the expansion of Lake Iroquois, a transition to a southern boreal-type climate 13.1-12.9 ka that coincided with the transition of Lake Iroquois into progressively lower lake levels, and a continuation of the southern boreal-type climate 12.9-11.5 ka. These conditions and changes are evident in the tree rings and relative dominance of tamarack (Larix laricina) and spruce species (Picea spp.) plus the presence of black ash (Fraxinus nigra) as the only thermophilous species. Together they suggest variations in atmospheric moisture levels, surface winds, temperature extremes, and/or an enhanced seasonality over time. Here we propose that the evolution of the glacial Great Lakes and their interactions with ice sheets, meltwater, winds, and regional topography created a regional glacial lake-effect climate, 14.2-11.5 cal ka BP, that was opposite to the established warming Bølling-Allerød-cold Younger Dryas climate progression. While a large cryosphere may be a necessary boundary condition for millennial-scale events to persist, a growing body of evidence from previous interglacial periods suggests that high-magnitude climate events are possible during low-cryosphere climate states. However, the full spectrum of variability, and the antecedent conditions under which such variability can occur, have not been fully described. As a result, the mechanisms generating high-magnitude climate variability during low-cryosphere boundary conditions remain unclear. In this study, high-resolution climate records from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) site 610 are used to portray the North Atlantic climate's progression through low ice, boundary conditions of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11c into the glacial inception. We show that this period is marked by two climate events displaying rapid shifts in both deep overflow and surface climate. The reorganization between Polar Water and Atlantic Water at subpolar latitudes appears to accompany changes in the flow of deep water emanating from the Nordic Seas, regardless of magnitude or boundary conditions. Further, during both intermediate and low ice boundary conditions, we find that a reduction in deep water precedes surface hydrographic change. The existence of surface and deep-ocean events, with similar magnitudes, abruptness, and surface–deep phasing, advances our mechanistic understanding of, and elucidates antecedent conditions that can lead to, high-magnitude climate instability. Glacier hazards caused by global warming and glacier retreat have disastrous consequences for communities in high mountain regions. Research on the distribution patterns and development trends of glacier hazards is essential for improving the understanding of glacier hazards and mitigating disaster risks in high mountains. This study systematically analyses the types, spatial, and temporal variations of glacier hazards attributed to the impacts of climate change and glacier retreat in the Tianshan, Pamir, Karakoram and Kunlun Mountain ranges in Xinjiang between 1950 and 2020. Climatic conditions and glacier surveys (including glacier fronts and mass balance measurements) are used as drivers to analyse spatial and temporal patterns of glacier hazards. The results indicate that 330 glacial hazards occurred in Xinjiang, the majority of which were in the Tianshan and Karakoram regions. Glacial hazard numbers decelerated, while temperature rise accelerated over the past seven decades. From 1950 to 2000, glacier hazards increased at an average rate of 0.74 each year, whereas, after 2000, they decreased at an average rate of 0.82 per year. Glacier surges have increased since 1990 in the Pamir-Karakoram Mountains and the Kunlun Mountains. Glacier surges in the Pamir-Karakoram Mountains exhibited the highest activity from 1990 to 1999 and 2000 to 2009. The annual occurrence of glacier outburst floods has decreased since the early 2000s, while the flood peak discharges of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) has intensified in Tianshan. Glacier debris flows in the Pamir and Tianshan mountain regions increased after 2010, frequently occurring on the Tianshan Highway and the China-Pakistan Karakoram Highway during the summer months. Glacier debris flows originated above 4,500m above sea level (a.s.l.), but most hazards occurred between 2000 and 3,000m a.s.l. In Xinjiang, glacier debris flows pose the greatest threat in the central and high mountain regions and require close attention. Temperature is the primary influencing factor driving trend changes and spatiotemporal patterns of glacial hazards. The hazard occurrence rates are uncorrelated with rainfall and glacier dynamics. Reconstructing mid-latitude glacier variations is a prerequisite for unveiling the interhemispheric climate linkages and atmospheric-ocean forcings that triggered those changes during the last glacial cycle. Nonetheless, the timing, magnitude, and structure of glacier fluctuations in the southern mid-latitudes remain incomplete. Here, we present a new 10Be chronology of the Universidad Glacier in the Andes of central Chile (34° S, 70° W; ∼2500 m a.s.l.) based on 21 cosmogenic-exposure ages of boulders on discrete moraine ridges defining former ice margins. Our findings include the mapping and dating of three moraines, UNI I, UNI II, and UNI III, located ∼20 km, 15 km, and 10 km down-valley from the present-day glacier front, respectively. The 10Be exposure ages of the UNI I moraine range from 135.9 ± 7.1 to 51.4 ± 2.7 ka (n = 3). The UNI II moraine gave a mean age of 18.0 ± 0.9 (n = 15) and the UNI III moraine yielded a mean age of 13.9 ± 0.8 ka (n = 3). The UNI I moraine implies the largest ice extent during a pre-Last Glacial Maximum (pre-LGM) period, including the penultimate glaciation. The UNI II is a moraine complex that represents cold and humid conditions in central Chile at the end of the LGM, which we attribute to the northward-shift of the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW). The UNI III moraine represents a return to glacial conditions interrupting the Termination, evidencing both a double-step deglacial trend observed through the southern middle and high latitudes at the end of the last ice age. Glacial expression of climate change during the Holocene was neither uniform geographically nor synchronous in Antarctica, highlighting the influence of regional drivers and local feedbacks on environmental change. Here, we present new data from sediment cores collected in Maxwell Bay, a broad open bay located in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. We reconstruct past intervals of glacial marine conditions using diatom assemblage and stable isotope proxy data from the sediment cores. These data suggest that there were episodes of stronger westerly winds in the South Shetland Islands, evidenced by the increased presence of the offshore diatom Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and increased abundance of planktonic foraminifera that are associated with low sea-ice concentration and presence of relatively warm water masses. With an expanded sedimentary archive from the proximal bay, we reconstruct the last 2500 years of environmental conditions in Maxwell Bay and interrogate the record within the context of over a dozen published records in the region. Four major climate intervals are identified: (1) relatively stable, cold climate with high productivity from ∼2500 to ∼1850 calibrated years Before Present (cal yr BP), followed by (2) environmental instability until ∼900 cal yr BP, (3) a prominent Medieval Climatic Anomaly from ∼875 to ∼475 cal yr BP, and (4) cooling during the Little Ice Age between ∼475 and ∼ 60 cal yr BP. This study examines the isotopic potential of mammoth remains from three paleontological sites in the southeast of the West Siberian Plain (SEWS): Shestakovo, Krasnoyarskaya Kurya, and Volchia Griva. We analysed oxygen isotopes from 29 mammoth enamel and tusk samples and horse and deer enamel samples. We verified sample preservation using ATR-FTIR and obtained δ18Op, δ18Oc, and reconstructed δ18Ow values for 28-22 ka cal BP. Preservation assessments revealed variable preservation conditions. Our findings indicate an increase of 1.4‰ in reconstructed δ18Ow values from glacial levels at 28-23 ka to late-glacial conditions at ca. 17–15.5 ka, likely reflecting climatic warming at the end of the Pleistocene. Recent climate warming and associated glacier retreat have dramatically changed the environmental conditions and microbial inhabitants of proglacial lakes. However, our understanding of the effects of climate warming and glacial influence on microbial biodiversity in these lakes remain relatively limited. Here, we studied bacterioplankton communities in 22 proglacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, spanning a range of nearly 7 °C in mean annual temperature (MAT), and examined the effects of climate and glaciers on their biodiversity by a space-to-time substitution. MAT emerged as the primary environmental driver of bacterioplankton biodiversity compared to glacial influence, increasing species richness and decreasing β-diversity. We identified 576 low-MAT (cold-preferred) species and 2,088 high-MAT (warm-preferred) species, and found that low-MAT species are less environmentally adapted, with their numbers declining as temperature increased. These results advance our understanding of temperature-driven bacterioplankton dynamics by disentangling the contrasting responses and adaptations of cold-preferred and warm-preferred species. Limited hydrological data coupled with a reliance on the monsoon rains for agriculture make Southeast (SE) Asia vulnerable to climate change. To develop a better understanding of how SE Asia responds to climatic forcings, we provide a paleoclimate perspective by reconstructing temperature and hydroclimate from a wetland outcrop in the Central Highlands of Vietnam (CHV) during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3). Mean annual atmospheric temperatures inferred from brGDGTs (branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers) indicate an increase from 23 to 26 °C between ∼54 and 37 cal ka BP, which follows an increase in mean annual insolation at the latitude of the site. δD wax data show a shift from a greater proportion of summer monsoon rain derived from the Bay of Bengal between 54 and 49 cal ka BP toward more autumn rain from the South China Sea (also known as the Vietnam East Sea) for most of the rest of the record. brGDGT-inferred soil pH suggests that the climate was wetter at 54 to 49 cal ka BP, then became drier, then returned to wet conditions approaching 37 cal ka BP. Both orbital forcing and changes in the exposure of the Sunda Shelf likely influenced hydroclimate in the CHV. δ13C wax indicates that C 4 plants dominate the vegetation cover during MIS 3. Comparison between our new record from the CHV with existing water isotope proxy records reveals coherent changes with nearby speleothem data, but regional differences between the history of hydroclimate in SE Asia and in the central Indian Monsoon domain. Existing research on glacial lake changes primarily concentrates on specific regions or decadal timescales, impeding a comprehensive understanding of the spatial and temporal variation of glacial lakes. This study tracks the annual evolution of global glacial lakes larger than 1 km2 (totally 3,133) from 2013 to 2022 based on Landsat OLI imagery. We investigated the lake area variation and glacier mass balance to explore interactions between glacial lake expansion and glacier mass loss. We aim to reveal the potentially diverse changes in the area of glacial lakes in various regions and of different types over the past decade. Our results show that, for the study glacial lakes, the total area has increased remarkably from 14,612 ± 21.13 km2 to 15,034 ± 18.54 km2 from 2013 to 2022. Among them, the glacier-contacted lakes experienced a rapid increase from 6,220 km2 to 6,625 km2, contributing to ∼ 96 % of the net area increment of the glacial lakes worldwide, whereas non-glacier-contacted lakes remain relatively stable at approximately 8,400 km2. Overall, glacier-contacted lakes grew relatively fast in the sub-periods of 2013–2014 and 2018–2019 and maintained slightly slow growth in other years. Remarkable expansion of glacial lakes was observed in Alaska, Iceland, and New Zealand. The significant expansion of glacier-contacted lakes was primarily attributed to the water inundation sprawl upward to the glacier tongues, which accelerated melting rates of the mother glaciers as feedback. Our analysis of the trend and inter-annual variation of glacial lake area reveal contrasting evolution of glacial lakes in different regions and of different types, which serves as a key reference for comprehending the impact of climate change, the interaction between glaciers and glacial lakes, and mitigating natural disasters like glacial lake outbursts. With the increase in global wildfire activity in response to global climate warming, the reconstruction of long-term fire histories and their links to environmental and anthropogenic factors has recently become an important focus of palaeoenvironmental research. Here we compare the precisely radiocarbon (14C) dated long-term histories of vegetation change and fire activity from lakes Ochaul (Cis-Baikal) and Kotokel (Trans-Baikal) in the Lake Baikal Region (LBR) of Siberia, a known source region of wildfires whose past and future relationships with climate, vegetation structure and human economy are still poorly understood. Our results show that under cold and dry glacial climate conditions (32–18.2 ka BP) fire frequencies in both study regions were low. Deglaciation, which was characterised by the spread of woody plants, began around 18.2 ka BP, accompanied by a slight increase in fire activity. Differences in the fire records from both subregions are observed from the end of the Lateglacial (LG), with peak fire activity in Cis-Baikal during the Early Holocene (EH) and in Trans-Baikal during the Middle Holocene (MH). During the Late Holocene (LH) both regions are marked by generally low fire activity. We propose that the long-term spatiotemporal differences in fire activity during the EH–MH interval are primarily driven by vegetation composition and landscape openness and the resulting changes in fire regime. Interestingly, both peaks are also observed in a global-scale fire record, which suggests spatiotemporal complexity of the Holocene fire history. Low charcoal accumulation rates in both records during the Middle Neolithic (ca. 6660–6050 a BP) "cultural hiatus" archaeologically documented for Cis-Baikal suggest an LBR-wide population decline. Paleoclimate change can be quantified by modelling the paleoglacier extents at well-dated moraines. However, previous studies typically use paleo-precipitation changes derived from climate proxies in other locations to constrain paleo-temperature changes. This approach may lead to significant uncertainties due to the lack of a physical basis and spatial-temporal representativeness. To address this issue, we developed a two-step approach to better constrain the paleo-temperature and precipitation changes. The first step is to identify all potential scenarios for temperature-precipitation changes using a coupled glacial-mass-balance and ice-flow model. In the second step, we incorporate a physics-based parameter k , reflecting the sensitivity of precipitation and temperature change, to determine the most probable temperature-precipitation change. We demonstrate our new approach by reconstructing paleoclimate changes of two valley glaciers in the Bhutanese Himalaya (BH). This approach derives a set of temperature reductions of −4.14 °C, −4.08 °C, −0.93 °C, −0.33 ∼ −0.57 °C, and − 0.31 ∼ −0.52 °C, with their corresponding precipitation decreases of 21.4%, 21.0%, 5.2%, 1.7–3.3%, and 1.6–3.0% relative to the present, during the Last Glacial Maximum, Heinrich event 1, Younger Dryas, Neoglacial, and Little Ice Age in BH, respectively. The reconstructed cold and dry climates in BH are consistent with the paleoclimate reconstructions across the Tibetan Plateau, but our approach improved the accuracy of regional paleoclimate reconstructions. These results suggest that temperature change dominates the glacial fluctuations in BH, with additional influences from solar insolation, oceanic and atmospheric circulation changes, and volcanic eruptions. • A new approach to constrain the paleo-temperature and paleo-precipitation changes was proposed. • The reconstructed paleoclimates during the last glacial cycle were colder and dryer than the present. • The collective effect of external and internal variabilities was the potential triggers of glacial fluctuations. Although the global environmental impact of Laurentide Ice-Sheet destabilizations on glacial climate during Heinrich Events is well-documented, the mechanism driving these ice-sheet instabilities remains elusive. Here we report foraminifera-based subsurface (~150 m water depth) ocean temperature and salinity reconstructions from a sediment core collected in the western subpolar North Atlantic, showing a consistent pattern of rapid subsurface ocean warming preceding the transition into each Heinrich Event identified in the same core of the last 27,000 years. These results provide the first solid evidence for the massive accumulation of ocean heat near the critical depth to trigger melting of marine-terminating portions of the Laurentide Ice Sheet around Labrador Sea followed by Heinrich Events. The repeated build-up of a subsurface heat reservoir in the subpolar Atlantic closely corresponds to times of weakened Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, indicating a precursor role of ocean circulation changes for initiating abrupt ice-sheet instabilities during Heinrich Events. We infer that a weaker ocean circulation in future may result in accelerated interior-ocean warming of the subpolar Atlantic, which could be critical for the stability of modern, marine-terminating Arctic glaciers and the freshwater budget of the North Atlantic.
