Background/purpose: Our previous study found significantly lower serum hematinic levels and higher serum homocysteine level as well as higher frequencies of serum hematinic deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia in oral leukoplakia (OL) patients than in healthy control subjects. This study evaluated whether carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-positive or squamous cell carcinoma-antigen (SCC-Ag)-positive OL patients had significantly lower serum hematinic levels and higher serum homocysteine level as well as significantly higher frequencies of hematinic deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia than CEA-negative or SCC-Ag-negative OL patients or healthy control subjects.Methods: The complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine levels in 184 OL patients including 85 CEA-positive, 99 CEA-negative, 25 SCC-Ag-positive, and 159 SCC-Ag-negative OL patients and in 184 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that the 85 CEA-positive or 25 SCC-Ag-positive OL patients had a significantly lower mean serum folic acid level and a significantly higher mean serum homocysteine level as well as significantly higher frequencies of serum folic acid deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia than 184 healthy control subjects. Moreover, the 25 SCC-Ag-positive OL patients had a significantly higher mean serum homocysteine level than the 159 SCC-Ag-negative OL patients. The 85 CEA-positive OL patients had a higher mean serum homocysteine level and a higher frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia than 99 CEA-negative OL patients (marginally significant, P = 0.060).Conclusion: CEA-positive or SCC-Ag-positive OL patients tend to have a higher mean serum homocysteine level and a higher frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia than CEA-negative or SCC-Ag-negative OL patients, respectively. Background/Aim: Geographic tongue (GT), a benign self-limiting condition (inflammation) is commonly seen in practice. Although quite easy for clinical diagnosis, in clinical practice it is commonly misdiagnosed and treated as Candida infection. The main aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of Candida spp. on tongue in patients with GT and subjects with clinically healthy oral mucosa. Additional aims were to evaluate subjective symptoms, uncontrolled usage of prescribed or non-prescribed antifungal topical medications and the presence of the cancerophobia or other health concerns in patients with GT.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disorder characterised by varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. Diagnosing MG represents a challenge for clinicians due to the diversity of disease manifestations. We present an unusual case of this disease in an older gentleman in which the patient reported swollen tongue and lips which was incorrectly diagnosed and treated as angioedema. Months later, he developed progressive dysphagia, dysarthria and weight loss. The diagnosis was further delayed by the identification of a hiatal hernia and Zenker's diverticulum after extensive investigation for dysphagia. A total of 15 months on prompted by persistent symptoms, the patient was found to have MG by positive antibody test and Electromyogram. Objective: To generalize the oral manifestations related to malaria and discuss their clinical significance for health professionals. Materials and Methods: The bibliographic databases of Public MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus were employed to retrieve publications online from January 1781 to August 2019. Original research articles, clinical trials, and case reports published in English were included. Results: A small number of studies reported oral manifestations of malaria (n = 29), including gingival bleeding, glossitis, oral ulcer, abnormal oral pigmentation, pericoronitis, herpes labialis, herpes gingivostomatitis, bitter taste, sore throat, Burkitt lymphoma of the jaw, alveolar bone resorption, and enamel hypoplasia. Conclusion: Oral manifestations may be important indicators for identification of malaria. Dental and general professionals should pay more attention to oral manifestations in malaria cases, and guide them for specialized examination, diagnosis, and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nutritional deficiencies are common worldwide and is most notable in low and middle income countries. In the early weeks of September 2018, oral sores mostly affecting the tongue were reported in three central schools under Tsirang district, Bhutan. A total of 204 students were affected in the three central schools. All the affected students have been assessed on the outbreak and nutritional survey was conducted in the three schools. Methods: A total of 204 students who complained of different oral lesions in the affected three schools were screened by the dental surgeon for clinical assessment and administered questionnaire for nutritional assessment by the nutritionist. Twenty-one students randomly selected were sent for blood tests for micronutrient assays and complete blood count. 41 students were tested for Exfoliative cell cytology to test for fungal elements. The collected data was double entered and validated using Epi-Data version 3.1 and analysed using Stata 15 IC. The characteristics of the participants are presented as frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation (SD). Results: Almost all the affected students in all the three schools had complaints of Burning Sensation (n = 158) followed by Pain (n = 153), Impaired Taste Sensation (n = 100) and Intolerance to Spicy Food (n = 95). Nutritional assessment analysis suggested schools not meeting the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for all components of Vitamin B complexes and Iron. Conclusion: Clinical assessments and nutritional survey analysis found inadequate vitamin rich dietary intakes among all the three schools. Objectives: Due to a worldwide increase in drug consumption, oral healthcare professionals are frequently confronted with patients using one or more drugs. A large number of drugs can be accompanied with adverse drug reactions in the orofacial region, amongst others of the tongue. This paper aims to give an overview of drugs that are known to be accompanied with tongue disorders. Materials and methods: The national drug information database for Dutch pharmacists, composed of scientific drug information, guidelines and summaries of product characteristics, was analysed for drug‐induced tongue disorders. "MedDRA classification" and "Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical codes" were used to categorize the disorders. Results: The database comprises of 1645 drugs of which 121 (7.4%) are documented to be accompanied with tongue disorders as an adverse effect. Drug‐induced tongue disorders are predominantly observed in the following drug categories: "nervous systems," "anti‐infectives for systemic use" and "alimentary tract and metabolism". The most common drug‐induced tongue disorders are glossitis, tongue oedema, tongue discoloration and burning tongue. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals are frequently confronted with drugs that can cause tongue disorders. purpose of this article is to explore the clinical value of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI in distinguishing benign and malignant tongue lesions and the internal heterogeneity of a tumour. Methods: The patients were divided into a tongue cancer group (22 patients) and a glossitis group (7 patients) based on the pathology results. All of the patients underwent DCE-MRI examination. Results: The results of this study showed that the volume transfer constant (Ktrans), rate constant (Kep), contrast enhancement ratio (CER) and initial area under the gadolinium contrast agent concentration time curve (IAUGG) values of the tongue cancer group were significantly higher than those of the glossitis group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). However, the extravascular extracellular volume fraction (Ve), fractional plasma volume (fPV), maximum slope (MaxSlope), and bolus arrival time (BAT) values measured by DCE-MRI in the tongue cancer group were not significantly different from those in the glossitis group (P > 0.05). The results of this study showed that the Ktrans, Kep, and IAUGG values measured by DCE-MRI had a good ability to distinguish tongue inflammation from tumours and Ktrans threshold of 0.484 has the best discriminative ability among them. The mean Ktrans values of stage I–II lesions were significantly higher than that of stage III–IV lesion (p =  0.045). Conclusion: DCE-MRI is effective in distinguishing between benign and malignant tongue lesions and the internal heterogeneity of the tumour; it is worth following up in a larger study. Background: COVID-19 outbreak in 2019 took the entire world by a storm with the medical fraternity struggling to understand and comprehend its complex nature. A number of patients who are COVID positive have reported oral lesions. However, there is still a lingering question, whether these lesions are because of coronavirus infection or they are secondary to the patient's systemic condition. This article aims to report the oral findings of an observational study of 713 patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A singlssswe- institution, short term observational study was conducted on patients admitted to Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre, Lavale, Pune who were positive to coronavirus, who presented varied oral findings such as herpes simplex, candidiasis, geographic tongue, and aphthous ulcer. Results: A total of 713 patients, 416 males and 297 females, who were positive to coronavirus, were screened from April 2020 to June 30, 2020, for oral ulcers. In this group, nine patients reported oral discomfort due to varied forms of oral lesions ranging from herpes simplex ulcers to angular cheilitis (1.26%). Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that oral manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 could be secondary lesions resulting from local irritants or from the deterioration of systemic health or could be just coexisting conditions. No specific pattern or characteristic oral lesions were noted in a study of 713 COVID- positive patients in our study to qualify these lesions as oral manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Featured Application: The identification of the oral mucosa findings and oral candidiasis in children/young adults with Down Syndrome could help paediatricians, dentists, and parents/caregivers to manage them in the more appropriate way. Down syndrome (DS) is an autosomal disorder associated with mental and physical involvement. The typical craniofacial phenotype and the dental anomalies in DS subjects have been widely described, but a systematic report on the manifestations affecting the oral mucosae in children with DS is still lacking. This systematic review aimed to establish the prevalence of oral mucosal manifestations in children/young adults with DS. Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus were investigated in September 2020. Documents in English on DS children/young adults (up to 25 years) reporting oral mucosal findings were considered. Study quality was assessed with ROBIN-I. Of the 150 references retrieved, 14 studies were considered eligible. The risk of bias ranged from low to unclear. Fissured tongue appeared to increase with age and was more prevalent in DS children than in the general population. Lip fissures and cheilitis were heterogeneously reported. Candida spp. carriage with and without active candidiasis was more frequent in DS children/young adults than in controls. C. albicans was the most prevalent species. Few other oral mucosal conditions have been reported sporadically. The heterogeneity of the works revealed the need for more appropriate oral examination to intercept the oral manifestations of oral mucosa and prevent recurrent candidiasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetes mellitus is a long standing illness, presenting with severe complications directly proportional to the degree of hypoglycemia affecting all age group of people. Among all the organs of the body, oral manifestations are mostly the initial complication and could even promise an early diagnosis of the disease. Xerostomia due to tumefaction of salivary gland, burning sensation of oral cavity, recurrent ulcers, angular chelitis, oral lichen planus, infections and periodontal disease are all the commonest oral abnormalities detected in the patient with diabetic mellitus. However, there is very minimal literature regarding the tongue lesions associated with diabetes mellitus which are often neglected. Radiation‐induced acute oral mucositis is associated with inflammation and pain. In other realms of pain research, nociceptors are known to be activated by inflammatory cytokines; for example, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF‐α) can activate transient receptor potential ion channels on sensory neurons. But there is an unclear relationship between inflammatory cytokines and molecular mediators of pain in radiation‐induced mucositis (RIM) and radiation‐associated pain (RAP). In this prospective, analytical, experimental pilot study, a common drug (pentoxifylline [PTX]) was used with the goal of inhibiting TNF‐α signaling in mice that underwent lingual irradiation to induce severe acute oral RIM/RAP. Body weight and glossitis scores were recorded daily. Eye wiping behaviors were assayed as a surrogate measure of oral discomfort (which is possible due to cross‐sensitization of the mandibular and ophthalmic branches of the trigeminal nerve). Quantitative real‐time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was performed on irradiated tongue tissue to measure changes in expression of TNF‐α, its receptor, nuclear factor kappa‐light‐chain‐enhancer of activated B cells, transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1), and transient receptor potential vanilloid type 4 (TRPV4). Responsiveness of afferent sensory trigeminal neurons to TNF‐α, a TRPV1 agonist (capsaicin), and a partial TRPV4 agonist (histamine) was measured via calcium imaging. Although PTX treatment did not reduce glossitis severity or mitigate weight loss in mice with RIM/RAP, it did inhibit the upregulation of TNF‐α's receptor that normally accompanies RIM, and it also reduced neuronal responsiveness to each of the aforementioned chemical stimuli. Background/purpose: Our previous study found the serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity in 12.3% of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients. This study assessed whether GPCA-positive BMS (GPCA+BMS) patients had significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than healthy control subjects or GPCA-negative BMS (GPCA-BMS) patients.Methods: The mean corpuscular volume, blood hemoglobin (Hb), and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels were measured and compared between any two of three groups of 109 GPCA+BMS patients, 775 GPCA-BMS patients, and 442 healthy control subjects.Results: We found that 109 GPCA+BMS patients had significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, blood Hb and serum iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 442 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.001) and significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, blood Hb and serum vitamin B12 deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 775 GPCA-BMS patients (all P-values < 0.01). Moreover, 775 GPCA-BMS patients had significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, blood Hb and serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 442 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.005). Pernicious anemia (45.5%) and normocytic anemia (24.2%) were the two most common types of anemia in 33 anemic GPCA+BMS patients. Moreover, normocytic anemia (61.3%), thalassemia trait-induced anemia (15.5%), and iron deficiency anemia (14.1%) were the three most common types of anemia in 142 anemic GPCA-BMS patients.Conclusion: GPCA+BMS patients have significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, blood Hb and serum vitamin B12 deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than healthy control subjects or GPCA-BMS patients. Objectives: The study aimed to understand the cause of glossitis that occurred among boarding students in a central school in Chhukha, Bhutan, and the outcome after 15 days of treatment with a vitamin B complex tablet., Methods: The researcher extracted data from the treatment records of patients treated for glossitis from 30 September 2020 to 30 October 2020 at the boarding school and conducted a retrospective descriptive study. A total of 97 records were used in the study: the age, gender,date of reporting to school, treatment, dietary preferences, and outcome of treatment., Results: In all, 63 (64.9%) patients were females. The students who were staying in the hostel for longer duration were more in proportion among the patients. About 80% of the patients had subjective improvement after treatment with two doses of one tablet of vitamin B complex tablet for 15 days. There were no deaths., Conclusion: The study could not ascertain the definite cause of glossitis among boarding students but 80 % of the patients showed subjective improvement after treatment with daily two doses of 32.5 mg of vitamin B complex tablet. Background: The tongue is a prominent muscular organ of the oral cavity and the integrity of the tongue mucosa frequently can reflect the overall health of an individual. Many notable structural and functional alterations can affect the tongue. These changes may be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Hence, the aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of structural and functional abnormalities of the tongue in a population reporting to a tertiary care center. We also assessed the prevalence of the normal variants and evaluated the normal tongue protrusion measurement in the study population., Methods: The cross-sectional study included 1,143 dental outpatients above 18 years of age who visited the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology between October 2021 to February 2022. Demographic details of the patients were noted. Participants were asked questions regarding any symptoms or abnormalities noticed on the tongue. The tongue was examined thoroughly for any structural/ functional abnormalities. The maximal tongue protrusion for each participant was measured by asking them to extend their tongue out. Medical history, drug history, and social history were recorded., Results: The study included 564 male and 579 female participants; tongue lesions were positive in 66.5% of the study population. Coated tongue (26.2%) was the most frequent structural abnormality that was noted in the present study. Taste dysfunction (4.6%) was the most frequent functional abnormality. The lesions were mostly in the anterior two-thirds (4.2%) of the tongue. Functional abnormalities of the tongue were noted in 8.7% of the study participants., Conclusions: The results of the present study showed that structural and functional abnormalities of the tongue were present in 66.5% of the population. Careful and detailed evaluation of the tongue examination is mandated in routine dental checkups. Background and Aims: Geographic tongue is a common inflammatory disorder of the tongue whose etiology is unknown. In this study, salivary levels of interferon-gamma were measured in persons with geographic tongue. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 30 persons with geographic tongue and 30 healthy individuals who had the conditions to enter the study were evaluated among the patients referred to Zahedan Dental Clinic. The control group was matched for age and sex. In both groups, unstimulated saliva was collected by Spitting at 9 am to 11 am. Salivary interferon Gamma samples were measured using Interferon Gamma Diagnostic Kit (HIFN) and ELISA Reader. According to the KolmogorovSmirnov test, the data distribution was normal (P = 0.198), data analyzed by statistical software 22 SPSS and using t-test. Results: The mean age in the group with geographic tongue was 31.3 ±6.2 years and in the control group the mean age was 30.96± 6.46 years. The mean saliva interferon gamma was not significantly different between the persons with geographic tongue (25.73±12.09 pg/ml) and the control (21.52±11.91 pg/ml) group (p=0.18). Typhonium is a genus belonging to the Araceae family, native to southern Asia and Australia. In folk medicine, Typhonium is used for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal, and wound-healing properties. We report a toxidrome of airway compromise due to Typhonium trilobatum tuber ingestion. We present an interesting case series of four patients who consumed raw tuber of T. trilobatum with suicidal thoughts. They exhibited a constellation of symptoms such as swelling of lips and tongue, drooling of saliva, and severe throat pain. One patient had significant upper airway edema and severe respiratory distress requiring emergency endotracheal intubation. Laboratory investigations were grossly normal in all four individuals, expect for mild asymptomatic hypokalemia in one and eosinophilia in another patient. We successfully managed all our patients with repeated adrenaline nebulization, antihistamines, and steroids. Typhonium is believed to be a beneficial herb. Toxicity of Typhonium is not reported much in the literature till date. An emergency department (ED) physician should be aware of this tuber toxicity as it presents with airway compromise, which resolves over hours. The symptoms are due to the local effects of calcium oxalate crystals in the tuber. Airway management is the priority and repeated adrenaline nebulization together with supportive care is advised. Background/purpose: Normocytosis is defined as having the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) between 80 fL and 99.9 fL. This study evaluated whether 944 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients with normocytosis had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than 532 healthy control subjects or 1064 AG patients.Methods: Complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 944 AG patients with normocytosis, 1064 AG patients, and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 12.4%, 14.5%, 2.3%, 2.0%, 9.0%, and 25.7% of 944 AG patients with normocytosis had blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity, respectively. Furthermore, 944 AG patients with normocytosis had significantly higher frequencies of blood Hb, iron, vitamin B12, folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.01). On the contrary, 944 AG patients with normocytosis had significantly lower frequencies of blood Hb and vitamin B12 deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia than overall 1064 AG patients (all P-values < 0.05).Conclusion: We conclude that there are significantly higher frequencies of anemia and serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity in AG patients with normocytosis than in healthy control subjects. Atrophic glossitis (AG) is characterized by the partial or complete absence of filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the tongue. AG may reflect the significant deficiencies of some major nutrients including riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin E. Moreover, protein-calorie malnutrition, candidiasis, Helicobacter pylori colonization, xerostomia, and diabetes mellitus are also the etiologies of AG. Our previous study found the serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA), thyroglobulin antibody (TGA), and thyroid microsomal antibody (TMA) positivities in 26.7%, 28.4%, and 29.8% of 1064 AG patients, respectively. We also found anemia, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia in 19.0%, 16.9%, 5.3%, 2.3%, and 11.9% of 1064 AG patients, respectively. Moreover, GPCA-positive AG patients tended to have relatively higher frequencies of hemoglobin, iron, and vitamin B12 deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia than GPCA-negative AG patients. Supplementations with vitamin BC capsules plus corresponding deficient hematinics for those AG patients with hematinic deficiencies can achieve complete remission of oral symptoms and AG in some AG patients. Therefore, it is very important to examine the complete blood count, serum hematinic, homocysteine, and autoantibody levels in AG patients before we start to offer treatments for AG patients. Background/purpose: Our previous study found that 56 of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have vitamin B12 deficiency. This study assessed whether the AG patients with vitamin B12 deficiency (B12D/AG patients) had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than healthy control subjects.Methods: The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 56 B12D/AG patients and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 56 B12D/AG patients had significantly lower mean blood Hb and serum iron levels as well as significantly higher mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean serum homocysteine level than healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.05). Moreover, 56 B12D/AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis (53.6%), blood Hb (64.3%), iron (26.8%), and folic acid (3.6%) deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia (89.3%), and serum GPCA positivity (55.4%) than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.005). Background/purpose: Our previous study found that 180 of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have iron deficiency. This study assessed whether all AG patients with iron deficiency (so-called ID/AG patients) had iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and evaluated whether the ID/AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than healthy control subjects.Methods: The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 180 ID/AG patients and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 180 ID/AG patients had significantly lower mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and lower mean blood Hb and serum iron levels as well as significantly higher mean serum homocysteine level than healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.001). Moreover, 180 ID/AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of blood Hb (46.1%), serum iron (100.0%), vitamin B12 (8.3%), and folic acid (4.4%) deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia (16.1%), and serum GPCA positivity (31.1%) than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.001). In addition, of 83 anemic ID/AG patients, 9 (10.8%) had pernicious anemia, 40 (48.2%) had normocytic anemia, 30 (36.2%) had IDA, and 4 (4.8%) had thalassemia trait-induced anemia.Conclusion: We conclude that ID/AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of blood Hb, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects. Background: The aim of study is to investigate the role of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1) on xerostomia‐induced inflammatory response in vivo. Methods: Parotid, submandibular, and lingual gland were removed for xerostomia induction. The expression of inflammatory cytokines, TRPV1, NFkB, and MAPK in xerostomia was evaluated and compared in both TRPV1 wild and knockout mice. Results: The level of interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) and IL‐17, neutrophil/CD4 T‐cell infiltration, phosphorylation of extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) and c‐Jun N terminal kinase, TRPV1, and the localization of NFkB were elevated in xerostomia‐induced TRPV1 wild‐type mice. In contrast, inflammatory cytokines and MAPK were decreased in xerostomia‐induced TRPV1 knockout mice. TRPV1 antagonist treatment also reduced tongue ulceration, neutrophil/CD4+ T‐cell expression, IL‐6, and IL‐17 in TRPV1 wild‐type mice. Background/purpose: Our previous study found that 127 of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have hyperhomocysteinemia. This study assessed whether the AG patients with hyperhomocysteinemia had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than AG patients without hyperhomocysteinemia or healthy control subjects.Methods: The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 127 AG patients with hyperhomocysteinemia, 937 AG patients without hyperhomocysteinemia, and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 127 AG patients with hyperhomocysteinemia had significantly higher frequencies of blood Hb and serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.001) and significantly higher frequencies of blood Hb and serum vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiencies and serum GPCA positivity than 937 AG patients without hyperhomocysteinemia (all P-values < 0.001). Background/purpose: Our previous study found 284 gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA)-positive atrophic glossitis (AG) patients (so-called GPCA+AG patients in this study) in a group of 1064 AG patients. This study evaluated whether high-titer (GPCA titer ≥ 160) GPCA+AG patients had greater frequencies of anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, macrocytosis, and hyperhomocysteinemia than low-titer (GPCA titer < 160) GPCA+AG patients.Methods: Complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 117 high-titer GPCA+AG patients, 167 low-titer GPCA+AG patients, and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 12.0%, 29.1%, 23.1%, 16.2%, 1.7%, and 23.1% of 117 high-titer GPCA+AG patients and 5.4%, 17.4%, 17.4%, 7.2%, 1.2%, and 14.4% of 167 low-titer GPCA+AG patients were diagnosed as having macrocytosis, blood hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia, respectively. Moreover, both 117 high-titer and 167 low-titer GPCA+AG patients had significantly greater frequencies of macrocytosis, blood hemoglobin, serum iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.05). Background/purpose: Macrocytosis is defined as having the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) ≧ 100 fL. This study evaluated whether 41 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients with macrocytosis had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than 532 healthy control subjects or 1064 AG patients.Methods: Complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and GPCA levels in 41 AG patients with macrocytosis, 1064 AG patients, and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 73.2%, 22.0%, 73.2%, 4.9%, 80.5%, and 56.1% of 41 AG patients with macrocytosis were diagnosed as having blood hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity, respectively. Moreover, 41 AG patients with macrocytosis had significantly higher frequencies of blood hemoglobin and serum vitamin B12 deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects or 1064 AG patients (all P-values < 0.001). In addition, 41 AG patients with macrocytosis also had significantly higher frequencies of serum iron and folic acid deficiencies than 532 healthy control subjects (both P-values < 0.001). Aims and Objectives: Celiac disease (CD) is characterized by oral manifestations in the soft tissues. The introduction of a gluten-free diet (GFD) may be related to change in the prevalence of oral changes and symptoms. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of oral soft tissue lesions in a pediatric Portuguese population with CD compared with healthy controls, and secondarily to assess the relationship between the onset of the GDF and the prevalence of oral manifestations. Materials and Methods: A case--control study was performed: 80 patients with CD and 80 healthy subjects as controls, aged 6--18 years. Data were gathered through a structured protocol, consisting of a clinical record (questionnaire) and an intraoral observational examination. For the descriptive analysis of the results, relevant summary statistics were applied. Descriptive and inferential (mainly nonparametric tests) analyses were carried out with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (IBM SPSS) version 24.0. P < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: Although soft tissue changes such as angular cheilitis, atrophic glossitis, and geographic tongue were found to be more common in the CD group, no differences were found between the two groups. The prevalence of aphthous ulcerations was higher in the CD group, with a highly significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). One-third of the patients with CD with aphthous ulcers refer that the beginning of the GFD influenced the improvement of this oral mucosa alteration, with a statistically significant difference (P = 0.007). Down syndrome (DS) is an autosomal disorder associated with mental and physical involvement. The typical craniofacial phenotype and the dental anomalies in DS subjects have been widely described, but a systematic report on the manifestations affecting the oral mucosae in children with DS is still lacking. This systematic review aimed to establish the prevalence of oral mucosal manifestations in children/young adults with DS. Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus were investigated in September 2020. Documents in English on DS children/young adults (up to 25 years) reporting oral mucosal findings were considered. Study quality was assessed with ROBIN-I. Of the 150 references retrieved, 14 studies were considered eligible. The risk of bias ranged from low to unclear. Fissured tongue appeared to increase with age and was more prevalent in DS children than in the general population. Lip fissures and cheilitis were heterogeneously reported. Candida spp. carriage with and without active candidiasis was more frequent in DS children/young adults than in controls. C. albicans was the most prevalent species. Few other oral mucosal conditions have been reported sporadically. The heterogeneity of the works revealed the need for more appropriate oral examination to intercept the oral manifestations of oral mucosa and prevent recurrent candidiasis.

Background: Simplexvirus humanalpha1 (HuAHV-1) are common anthropozoonosis reported in marmosets but rare in howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.)., Methods: Necropsy of two brown-howler monkeys (A. caraya) and one red-howler monkey (A. guariba clamitans) from different zoo collections were performed. Fragments of all organs were examined through microscopy. Samples were submitted to IHC for Simplexvirus humanalpha 2 (HuAHV-2) [sin. Herpesvirus simplex type 2] and PCR., Results: Grossly, only the A. guariba showed liver lesions characterized by multifocal, pinpoint white areas corresponding microscopically as random necrotizing herpetic hepatitis and ulcerative glossitis. Both A. caraya showed necrotizing meningoencephalitis with Cowdry A-type body inclusions within neurons and astrocytes. Immunolabeling for HuAHV-1/2 was observed in the tongue, liver, and brain. HuAHV-1 was confirmed in all samples by PCR, Sanger sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses., Conclusion: Necrotizing meningoencephalitis was appreciated in 2/3 of animals, and it is associated with neurologic signs. Along with ulcerative glossitis, a hallmark lesion in marmosets, it was present in one animal. Regarding herpetic hepatitis, it is not frequent in monkeys and occurs mainly in immunocompromised animals. HuAHV-1 infection was confirmed corroborating with a human source. Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) is a challenge for the veterinary practitioner since its etiology and treatments are still undefined. The present paper investigated the role of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in the severity of the FCGS. Oral mucosal biopsies obtained from 19 cats with FCGS were divided into two groups according to their FIV serology status. Later, the clinical lesion score was correlated with the histopathological grade of FCGS lesions and the degree of immunostaining in both groups. Most of the animals had significant histological changes; however, no correlation with FIV immunostaining intensity was observed. It was concluded that the presence of FIV infection or the animal’s seropositivity status does not seem to interfere with the severity of clinical signs nor the degree of histopathological changes when compared to the seronegative group.

Background/purpose: Microcytosis is defined as having mean corpuscular volume (MCV) < 80 fL. This study evaluated whether 79 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients with microcytosis and 985 AG patient without microcytosis had higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity than 532 healthy control subjects.Methods: Complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and serum GPCA levels in 79 AG patients with microcytosis, 985 AG patient without microcytosis, and 532 healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 69.6%, 43.0%, 5.1%, 3.8%, 11.4%, and 22.8% of 79 AG patients with microcytosis and 14.9%, 14.8%, 5.3%, 2.1%, 12.0%, and 27.0% of 985 AG patients without microcytosis were diagnosed as having blood hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity, respectively. Both 79 AG patients with microcytosis and 985 AG patients without microcytosis had significantly higher frequencies of blood hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.01). Moreover, 79 AG patients with microcytosis had significantly higher frequencies of blood hemoglobin and iron deficiencies than 985 AG patients without microcytosis.Conclusion: There are significantly higher frequencies of anemia, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity in AG patients with or without microcytosis than in healthy control subjects. Acute sore throat is a condition of inflammation, characterized by pain, swelling, and burning sensation, which result from inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. Throat lozenges and refreshment candy containing the antiseptics and local anesthetics are commonly used to relieve the symptoms of sore throat. Side effects of using throat lozenges and refreshment candy have not been reported. This case report presents the case of glossitis mimicking median rhomboid glossitis induced by throat lozenges and refreshment candy, which is used to relieve the symptoms of sore throat. Heat syndrome is a folk saying in China, which is used to describe people with symptoms such as aphtha, oral ulcer, glossitis, swelling and aching of gingiva, and dry eye. Aconitum carmichaelii Debx. (A), Zingiber officinale Rosc. (Z), and Cinnamomum cassia Presl (C) are the representatives of pungent and hot Chinese herbs which may cause heat syndrome. In order to explore the mechanism of pungent herbs-induced heat syndrome, rats were treated with AZC extracts at different concentrations and at different time periods. A series of cytokines were determined using the cytokine antibody array; some immunosuppressive cytokines, including TGF-β, IL-10, and IL-35, significantly increased in AZC group as compared with control group. Higher mRNA expressions of Foxp3, TGF-β, IL-10, and IL-35 were found in the spleen and thymus of rats after treatment for 18 days based on RT-PCR. Flow cytometry result revealed that the percentage of CD4+CD25+ Treg cells and Foxp3+CD4+CD25+ Treg cells in spleen lymphocytes showed an increasing trend from the 3rd day to the 18th day after treatment with middle dose of AZC extracts. Background/purpose: Our previous study found that 177 of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity only (so-called GPCA+AG patients). This study assessed whether serum GPCA positivity or AG itself was a significant factor causing hematinic deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia in GPCA+AG or GPCA-negative, thyroglobulin antibody (TGA)-negative, and thyroid microsomal antibody (TMA)-negative AG (GPCA־TGA־TMA־AG) patients.Methods: The mean blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine levels were measured and compared between any two of three groups of 177 GPCA+AG patients, 476 GPCA־TGA־TMA־AG patients, and 532 healthy control subjects.Results: GPCA+AG patients had significantly lower mean blood Hb and iron (for women only) levels and a significantly higher mean serum homocysteine level than healthy control subjects. Moreover, GPCA+AG patients had significantly greater frequencies of blood Hb, iron, and vitamin B12 deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia than healthy control subjects. GPCA+AG patients have a lower mean serum vitamin B12 level and a significantly higher mean serum homocysteine level as well as significantly greater frequencies of vitamin B12 deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia than GPCA־TGA־TMA־AG patients. Moreover, GPCA־TGA־TMA־AG patients did have significantly lower mean blood Hb and iron levels and significantly greater frequencies of blood Hb, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia than healthy control subjects.Conclusion: The GPCA is a major factor causing vitamin B12 deficiency and hyperhomocyteinemia in GPCA+AG patients. Objective: To detail a scoping review on the global and regional relative frequencies of oral mucosal disorders in the children based on both clinical studies and those reported from biopsy records. Materials and Methods: A literature search was completed from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2018 using PubMed and EMBASE. Results: Twenty clinical studies (sample size: 85,976) and 34 studies from biopsy services (40,522 biopsies) were included. Clinically, the most frequent conditions were aphthous ulcerations (1.82%), trauma‐associated lesions (1.33%) and herpes simplex virus (HSV)‐associated lesions (1.33%). Overall, the most commonly biopsied lesions were mucoceles (17.12%), fibrous lesions (9.06%) and pyogenic granuloma (4.87%). By WHO geographic region, the pooled relative frequencies of the most common oral lesions were similar between regions in both clinical and biopsy studies. Across regions, geographic tongue (migratory glossitis), HSV lesions, fissured tongue and trauma‐associated ulcers were the most commonly reported paediatric oral mucosal lesions in clinical studies, while mucoceles, fibrous lesions and pyogenic granuloma were the most commonly biopsied lesions. Conclusions: The scoping review suggests data from the clinical studies and biopsy records shared similarities in the most commonly observed mucosal lesions in children across regions. Background/purpose: Gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA), thyroglobulin antibody (TGA), and thyroid microsomal antibody (TMA) are organ-specific autoantibodies. This study mainly assessed the frequencies of presence of serum GPCA, TGA, and TMA in atrophic glossitis (AG) patients.Methods: Serum GPCA, TGA, and TMA levels were measured in 1064 AG patients and in 532 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects.Results: We found that 26.7%, 28.4%, and 29.8% of 1064 AG patients and 2.3%, 2.1%, and 2.6% of 532 healthy control subjects had the serum GPCA, TGA, and TMA positivities, respectively. AG patients had a significantly higher frequency of GPCA, TGA, or TMA positivity than healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.001). We also found that 67 (6.3%), 181 (17.0%), and 340 (32.0%) AG patients and 3 (0.6%), 10 (1.9%), and 8 (1.5%) healthy control subjects had the presence of three (GPCA + TGA + TMA), two (GPCA + TGA, GPCA + TMA, or TGA + TMA), or one (GPCA only, TGA only, or TMA only) organ-specific autoantibody in their sera, respectively. Of 373 TGA/TMA-positive AG patients whose serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured, 78.6%, 8.0%, and 13.4% of these TGA/TMA-positive AG patients had normal, lower, and higher serum TSH levels, respectively.Conclusion: Approximately 55.3% of 1064 AG patients have serum GPCA/TGA/TMA positivity. Because part of GPCA-positive AG patients may develop pernicious anemia, autoimmune atrophic gastritis, and gastric carcinoma, and part of TGA/TMA-positive AG patients may have thyroid dysfunction such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, these autoantibody-positive AG patients should be referred to medical doctors for further management. Objective: To assess the prevalence of oral mucosal disorders during pregnancy.Methods: Observational studies were selected by two reviewers in a two-phase process. Search strategies were applied at CINAHL, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, OpenGrey, and ProQuest. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. Synthesis of results was calculated by the software R Statistics version 3.5.1 (The R Foundation, Vienna, Austria). Confidence in cumulative evidence was assessed by using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria.Results: Fifteen studies met the eligibility criteria and were selected for qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis, of which 5935 participants were enrolled. The overall prevalence of oral mucosal disorders was 11.8%. Gingival hyperplasia (17.1%), morsicatio buccarum (10%), oral candidiasis (4.4%), pyogenic granuloma (3%), and benign migratory glossitis (2.8%) were the most prevalent lesions. The overall risk of bias was considered moderate, and the quality of evidence was very low.Conclusion: Disorders of the oral mucosa were present in approximately 1 out of 10 pregnant women. This study assessed whether the serum GPCA or AG itself was a significant factor causing anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia in GPCA-positive AG (GPCA+AG) and GPCA-negative AG (GPCA-AG) patients.Methods: The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine levels were measured and compared between any two of three groups of 284 GPCA+AG, 780 GPCA-AG patients, and 532 healthy control subjects.Results: Both 284 GPCA+AG and 780 GPCA-AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of microcytosis, macrocytosis, blood Hb, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 532 healthy control subjects. Moreover, 284 GPCA+AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of macrocytosis, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hyperhomocysteinemia than 780 GPCA-AG patients. Sixty-three (22.2%) of 284 GPCA+AG patients and 139 (17.8%) of 780 GPCA-AG patients had anemia. The normocytic anemia (42.9%), pernicious anemia (34.9%), and iron deficiency anemia (15.9%) were the three most common types of anemia in the 63 anemic GPCA+AG patients. Moreover, the normocytic anemia (64.8%), iron deficiency anemia (14.4%), and thalassemia trait-induced anemia (13.7%) were the three most common types of anemia in 139 anemic GPCA-AG patients.Conclusion: The disease of AG itself is a significant factor causing anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia in both GPCA+AG and GPCA-AG patients. Background/purpose: Atrophic glossitis (AG) patients are prone to have anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity. This study evaluated whether 1064 AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of anemia, hematinic deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects.Methods: The complete blood count, serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, and serum GPCA levels in 1064 AG patients and 532 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects were measured and compared.Results: We found that 7.4%, 3.9%, 19.0%, 16.9%, 5.3%, 2.3%, 11.9%, and 26.7% of 1064 AG patients were diagnosed as having microcytosis, macrocytosis, hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity, respectively. Moreover, 1064 AG patients had significantly higher frequencies of microcytosis, macrocytosis, hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity than 532 healthy control subjects (all P-values < 0.005). Of the 202 anemic AG patients, 22 had pernicious anemia, eight had macrocytic anemia rather than pernicious anemia, 117 had normocytic anemia, 30 had iron deficiency anemia, and 21 had thalassemia trait-induced anemia, and four had microcytic anemia rather than iron deficiency anemia and thalassemia trait-induced anemia.Conclusion: There are significantly higher frequencies of anemia, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum GPCA positivity in AG patients than in healthy control subjects. Background/Objectives: Vitamin B12 deficiency in infants is uncommonly reported from developed countries and generally lacks dermatologic manifestations. On the contrary, infantile vitamin B12 deficiency is common in India and cutaneous manifestations are a constant feature, although often overshadowed by neurologic and hematological manifestations. The aim of this study was to describe the skin changes of vitamin B12 deficiency in infants. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of vitamin B12 deficient infants for clinical and laboratory parameters was performed and data analyzed. Results: Forty‐three infants, 30 boys and 13 girls, aged 4 to 27 months, with vitamin B12 deficiency were identified. Skin hyperpigmentation was present in 41 infants; it was localized to the dorsa of hands and feet in 26. Fifteen infants had generalized hyperpigmentation; 10 had a reticulate pattern, and 5 had a homogeneous pattern. Brown and sparse scalp hair were present in all. Glossitis was seen in 5 infants and cheilitis in 3. Of the 32 infants who underwent laboratory investigations, 28 had anemia and 21 macrocytosis. Serum vitamin B12 was measured in 30 infants; it was low in 19. Of the 11 with normal serum vitamin B12, 9 had received vitamin B12 before referral but had macrocytosis and low maternal serum vitamin B12. The infants were treated with vitamin B12. Skin pigmentation and mucosal changes resolved completely by 3‐4 weeks, but hair changes were slower to reverse. Background/purpose: Gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA), thyroglobulin antibody (TGA), and thyroid microsomal antibody (TMA) have not yet been reported in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients with concomitant oral lichen planus (OLP/RAS patients). This study mainly assessed the frequencies of serum GPCA, TGA, and TMA (GPCA/TGA/TMA) positivities in 44 OLP/RAS patients.Methods: The frequencies of serum GPCA/TGA/TMA positivities in 44 OLP/RAS patients, OLP/RAS patients of four different subgroups, 520 RAS patients, and 352 healthy control subjects were calculated and compared.Results: We found that 20.5%, 27.3%, and 31.8% of 44 OLP/RAS patients, 75.0%, 100.0%, and 100.0% of 4 OLP/major-typed RAS (OLP/major RAS) patients, 15.0%, 20.0%, and 25.0% of 40 OLP/minor-typed RAS (OLP/minor RAS) patients, 45.5%, 72.7%, and 54.5% of 11 atrophic glossitis-positive OLP/RAS (AG+OLP/RAS) patients, and 12.1%, 12.1%, and 24.2% of 33 AG-negative OLP/RAS (AG־OLP/RAS) patients had the presence of GPCA, TGA, and TMA in their sera, respectively. OLP/RAS patients and OLP/RAS patients of four different subgroups all had significantly higher frequencies of GPCA/TGA/TMA positivities than healthy control subjects. Moreover, OLP/RAS patients had a significantly higher frequency of TMA positivity than RAS patients, and OLP/major RAS and AG+OLP/RAS patients had significantly higher frequencies of GPCA/TGA/TMA positivities than RAS patients. Furthermore, OLP/major RAS patients had significantly higher frequencies of GPCA/TGA/TMA positivities than OLP/minor RAS patients.Conclusion: For OLP/RAS patients, the concomitant OLP may play a role in causing an increased frequency of TMA positivity, and major RAS and the concomitant AG are contributory factors causing the elevated frequencies of GPCA/TGA/TMA positivities. Background: COVID-19 outbreak in 2019 took the entire world by a storm with the medical fraternity struggling to understand and comprehend its complex nature. A number of patients who are COVID positive have reported oral lesions. However, there is still a lingering question, whether these lesions are because of coronavirus infection or they are secondary to the patient's systemic condition. This article aims to report the oral findings of an observational study of 713 patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A singlssswe-institution, short-term observational study was conducted on patients admitted to Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre, Lavale, Pune who were positive to coronavirus, who presented varied oral findings such as herpes simplex, candidiasis, geographic tongue, and aphthous ulcer. Results: A total of 713 patients, 416 males and 297 females, who were positive to coronavirus, were screened from April 2020 to June 30, 2020, for oral ulcers. In this group, nine patients reported oral discomfort due to varied forms of oral lesions ranging from herpes simplex ulcers to angular cheilitis (1.26%). Conclusion: This study supports the hypothesis that oral manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 could be secondary lesions resulting from local irritants or from the deterioration of systemic health or could be just coexisting conditions. No specific pattern or characteristic oral lesions were noted in a study of 713 COVID-positive patients in our study to qualify these lesions as oral manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Benign migratory glossitis, also known as geographic tongue, is characterized by the tongue inflammation and is associated with pain and difficulty eating due to the lingual papillae atrophy. It may appear in association with the fissured tongue. This paper reports the case of a 47-year-old male patient who sought dental care with the main complaint of burning, discomfort, increased sensitivity and a burning sensation on the tongue. He was diagnosed with migratory glossitis associated with a fissured tongue. The patient treatment was performed with an ointment based on triamcinolone acetonide (Omcilon-A Orabase®), which showed improvement in the clinical signs after seven days.
