We propose a metamaterial approach to route terahertz waves that features subwavelength confinement in the transverse plane. The guiding mechanism is based on geometrically induced electromagnetic modes sustained by corrugated metallic wedges, whose characteristics resemble those of wedge plasmon polaritons at telecom and optical frequencies. Additionally, frequency selective focusing and slowing down of terahertz radiation based on the proposed wedge waveguides are presented.

Using leakage-radiation microscopy, we characterize the efficiency of unidirectional surface-plasmon excitation with periodic (800 nm) arrays of 130-nm-high and 330-nm-wide gold ridges on a thin gold film illuminated with a focused (5-microm-wide) laser beam. We demonstrate that, at the resonant wavelength of 816 nm, the excitation efficiency of > 0.4 can be obtained with >or= 5 ridges by adjusting the beam position. Conducting numerical simulations, we account for the experimental results and calculate the electric-field enhancement achieved near the gold surface.

We investigate radiation nanofocusing with channel plasmon polaritons (CPPs) propagating along subwavelength metal grooves that are tapered synchronously in depth and in width. Efficient CPP nanofocusing at telecom wavelengths with the estimated field intensity enhancement of up to approximately 90 is directly demonstrated using near-field microscopy. Experimental observations are concurred with electromagnetic simulations, predicting the possibility of reaching the intensity enhancements of approximately 1200 and opening thereby exciting perspectives for practical applications of CPP nanofocusing.

A theoretical study is presented on the optical transmission through square hole arrays drilled in optically thin films, where transmission may occur through both the holes and the metal layer. It is shown that, as the thickness of the metal film decreases, the coupling of light with short-range surface plasmons redshifts the extraordinary optical transmission peak to longer wavelengths. At the same time, the maximum-to-minimum transmittance ratio is kept high even for metal thicknesses as small as one skin depth.

We investigate transmission efficiency and finite size effects for the subwavelength hole arrays. Experiments and simulations show how the finite size effects depend strongly on the hole diameter. The transmission efficiency reaches an asymptotic upper value when the array is larger than the surface plasmon propagation length on the corrugated surface. By comparing the transmission of arrays with that of the corresponding single holes, the relative enhancement is found to increase as the hole diameter decreases. In the conditions of the experiments the enhancement is one to two orders of magnitude but there is no fundamental upper limit to this value.

The excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) by focusing a laser beam on single subwavelength holes opened in a thin gold film is studied both experimentally and theoretically. By means of leakage radiation microscopy, quantitative measurements of the light-SPP coupling efficiency are performed for holes with different sizes and shapes. The system is studied theoretically by using a modal expansion method to calculate the fraction of the incident energy which is scattered by the hole into a surface plasmon. We demonstrate that a single subwavelength hole can be used to generate SPP with an efficiency up to 28%.

We study theoretically electromagnetic modes guided by metallic wedges at telecom wavelengths. These modes are found to exhibit superior confinement while showing similar propagation loss as compared to other subwavelength guiding configurations. It is also shown that mode focusing can be realized by gradual modification of the wedge geometry along the mode propagation direction.

By using a theoretical formalism able to work in both real and k spaces, the physical origin of the phenomenon of extraordinary transmission of light through quasiperiodic arrays of holes is revealed. Long-range order present in a quasiperiodic array selects the wave vector(s) of the surface electromagnetic mode(s) that allows an efficient transmission of light through subwavelength holes.

In this Letter, we show how the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along a perfectly conducting wire can be tailored by corrugating its surface with a periodic array of radial grooves. In this way, highly localized SPPs can be sustained in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Importantly, the propagation characteristics of these spoof SPPs can be controlled by the surface geometry, opening the way to important applications such as energy concentration on cylindrical wires and superfocusing using conical structures.

The role of irradiation induced defects and temperature in the conducting properties of single-walled (10, 10) carbon nanotubes has been analyzed by means of a first-principles approach. We find that divacancies modify strongly the energy dependence of the differential conductance, reducing also the number of contributing channels from two (ideal) to one. A small number of divacancies (5-9) brings up strong Anderson localization effects and a seemly universal curve for the resistance as a function of the number of defects. It is also shown that low temperatures, about 15-65 K, are enough to smooth out the fluctuations of the conductance without destroying the exponential dependence of the resistivity as a function of the tube length.

Recently, it has been observed that transmission of light through subwavelength apertures, which is usually negligible, can be significantly enhanced when surface plasmons are resonantly excited. Here we introduce the idea that similar effects can be expected for cold atoms in structures supporting surface matter waves. We show that surface matter waves are possible in properly designed structures, and then we theoretically demonstrate 100% transmission of rubidium atoms through an array of slits much narrower than the de Broglie wavelength of the atoms. Our results open up the possibility of using surface matter waves to control the flow of neutral atoms.

We show that a single rectangular hole in a metallic film exhibits transmission resonances that appear near the cutoff wavelength of the hole waveguide. For light polarized with the electric field pointing along the hole's short axis, it is shown that the normalized-to-area transmittance at resonance is proportional to the ratio between the long and short sides, and to the dielectric constant inside the hole. Importantly, this resonant transmission process is accompanied by a huge enhancement of the electric field at both entrance and exit interfaces of the hole.

In this Letter we show that the extraordinary optical transmission phenomenon found before in 2D hole arrays is already present in a linear chain of subwavelength holes, which can be considered as the basic geometrical unit showing this property. In order to study this problem, we have developed a new theoretical framework, able to analyze the optical properties of finite collections of subwavelength apertures and/or dimples (of any shape and placed in arbitrary positions) drilled in a metallic film.

We explore, both experimentally and theoretically, the existence in the millimeter-wave range of the phenomenon of extraordinary light transmission through arrays of subwavelength holes. We have measured the transmission spectra of several samples made on aluminum wafers by use of an AB Millimetre quasi-optical vector network analyzer in the wavelength range 4.2-6.5 mm. Clear signals of the existence of resonant light transmission at wavelengths close to the period of the array appear in the spectra.

The recent surface plasmon entanglement experiment [Nature (London) 418, 304 (2002)]] is theoretically analyzed. The entanglement preservation upon transmission in the nonfocused case is found to provide information about the interaction of the biphoton and the metallic film. The entanglement degradation in the focused case is explained in the framework of a fully multimode model. This phenomenon is a consequence of the polarization-selective filtering behavior of the metallic nanostructured film. It is shown that the "which-way" labels that degrade entanglement are not located in the degrees of freedom of the metallic film but rather in the spatial degrees of freedom of the photon field.

In this work we explore the transmission properties of a single slit in a metallic screen. We analyze the dependence of these properties on both slit width and angle of incident radiation. We study in detail the crossover between the subwavelength regime and the geometrical-optics limit. In the subwavelength regime, resonant transmission linked to the excitation of waveguide resonances is analyzed. Linewidth of these resonances and their associated electric-field intensities are controlled by just the width of the slit. More complex transmission spectra appear when the wavelength of light is comparable to the slit width. Rapid oscillations associated with the emergence of different propagating modes inside the slit are the main features appearing in this regime.

In this Letter, we explore transmission properties of a single subwavelength slit flanked by a finite array of grooves made on a thick metallic film. We identify three main mechanisms that can enhance optical transmission: groove cavity mode excitation (controlled by the depth of the grooves), in-phase groove reemission (controlled by the period of the groove array), and slit waveguide mode (controlled by the thickness of the metal film). By tuning these geometrical parameters, enhancements of transmission of light by up to 2 orders of magnitude can be achieved when all three mechanisms coincide. Experimental verification of these findings is also shown for structured silver films fabricated by focused-ion-beam milling.

We present a theoretical foundation for the beaming of light displayed by a single subwavelength aperture in an appropriately corrugated metal film [H. J. Lezec, Science 297, 820 (2002)]]. Good agreement is found between calculations and experimental data. We show that beaming is due to the formation of electromagnetic surface resonances and that the beam direction, width, and wavelength at which it occurs can be selected by tuning geometrical parameters of the structure.

We present a fully three-dimensional theoretical study of the extraordinary transmission of light through subwavelength hole arrays in optically thick metal films. Good agreement is obtained with experimental data. An analytical minimal model is also developed, which conclusively shows that the enhancement of transmission is due to tunneling through surface plasmons formed on each metal-dielectric interface. Different regimes of tunneling (resonant through a "surface plasmon molecule," or sequential through two isolated surface plasmons) are found depending on the geometrical parameters defining the system.
