Constraining the polarisation properties of extragalactic point sources is a relevant task not only because they are one of the main contaminants for primordial cosmic microwave background B-mode detection if the tensor-to-scalar ratio is lower than r = 0.001, but also for a better understanding of the properties of radio-loud active galactic nuclei. We develop and train a machine learning model based on a convolutional neural network to learn how to estimate the polarisation flux density and angle of point sources embedded in cosmic microwave background images knowing only their positions. To train the neural network, we use realistic simulations of patches of area 32x32 pixels at the 217 GHz Planck channel with injected point sources at their centres. The patches also contain a realistic background composed by dust, the CMB and instrumental noise. Firstly, we study the comparison between true and estimated polarisation flux densities for P, Q and U. Secondly, we analyse the comparison between true and estimated polarisation angles. Finally, we study the performance of our model with real data and we compare our results against the PCCS2. We obtain that our model is reliable to constrain the polarisation flux above 80 mJy. For this limit, we obtain errors lower than 30%. Training the same network with Q and U, the reliability limit is above +-250 mJy for determining the polarisation angle of both Q and U sources with a 1sigma uncertainty of +-29deg and +-32deg for Q and U sources respectively. We obtain similar results to the PCCS2 for some sources, although we also find discrepancies in the 300-400 mJy flux density range with respect to the Planck catalogue. Based on these results, our model seems to be a promising tool to give estimations of the polarisation flux densities and angles of point sources above 80 mJy in any catalogue with practically null computational time., Comment: 9 pages, 9 Figures. We present EMIR, a powerful near-infrared (NIR) camera and multi-object spectrograph (MOS) installed at the Nasmyth focus of the 10.4 m GTC. EMIR was commissioned in mid-2016 and is offered as a common-user instrument. It provides spectral coverage of 0.9 to 2.5 $\mu m$ over a field of view (FOV) of 6.67x6.67 squared arcmin in imaging mode, and 6.67x4 squared arcmin in spectroscopy. EMIR delivers up to 53 spectra of different objects thanks to a robotic configurable cold slit mask system that is located inside the cryogenic chamber, allowing rapid reconfiguration of the observing mask. The imaging mode is attained by moving all bars outside the FOV and then leaving an empty space in the GTC focal surface. The dispersing suite holds three large pseudo-grisms, formed by the combination of high-efficiency FuSi ion-etched ruled transmission grating sandwiched between two identical ZnSe prisms, plus one standard replicated grism. These dispersing units offer the spectral recording of an atmospheric window $J,H,K$ in a single shot with resolving powers of 5000, 4250, 4000, respectively for a nominal slit width of 0.6\arcsec, plus the combined bands $YJ$ or $HK$, also in a single shot, with resolution of $\sim$ 1000. The original Hawaii2 FPA detector, which is prone to instabilities that add noise to the signal, is being replaced by a new Hawaii2RG detector array, and is currently being tested at the IAC. We theoretically show that laser recoil heating in free-space levitated optomechanics can be arbitrarily suppressed by shining squeezed light onto an optically trapped nanoparticle. The presence of squeezing modifies the quantum electrodynamical light-matter interaction in a way that enables us to control the amount of information that the scattered light carries about a given mechanical degree of freedom. Moreover, we analyze the trade-off between measurement imprecision and back-action noise and show that optical detection beyond the standard quantum limit can be achieved. We predict that, with state-of-the-art squeezed light sources, laser recoil heating can be reduced by at least 60% by squeezing a single Gaussian mode with an appropriate incidence direction, and by 98% by squeezing a properly mode-matched mode. Using the Wei-Norman theory we obtain a time-dependent complex Riccati equation (TDCRE) as the solution of the time evolution operator (TEO) of quantum systems described by time-dependent (TD) Hamiltonians that are linear combinations of the generators of the $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$, $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$ Lie algebras. Using a recently developed solution for the time evolution of these quantum systems we solve the TDCRE recursively as generalized continued fractions, which are optimal for numerical implementations, and establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the unitarity of the TEO in the factorized representation. The inherited symmetries of quantum systems can be recognized by a simple inspection of the TDCRE, allowing effective quantum Hamiltonians to be associated with it, as we show for the Bloch-Riccati equation whose Hamiltonian corresponds to that of a generic TD system of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. Photoionization as a half-scattering process is not instantaneous. Usually, time delays in photoionization are of the order of few tens of attoseconds (1 as = 10$^{-18}$ s). While going from a single atom to a nano-object, one can expect the delay to increase since the photoelectron scatters over a larger distance. Here, we show that this is no longer valid in the case of planar systems. Using attosecond interferometry, we find that the time delay in a 2D carbon-based molecule, naphthalene, is significantly smaller compared to its 3D diamond-like counterpart, adamantane. The measured time delay carries the signature of the spatial distribution of the hole created in the residual molecular cation, allowing us to obtain its dimensions with angstrom accuracy. There is a growing interest in signaling schemes that operate in the wideband regime due to the crowded frequency spectrum. However, a downside of the wideband regime is that obtaining channel state information is costly, and the capacity of previously used modulation schemes such as code division multiple access and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing begins to diverge from the capacity bound without channel state information. Impulsive frequency shift keying and wideband time frequency coding have been shown to perform well in the wideband regime without channel state information, thus avoiding the costs and challenges associated with obtaining channel state information. However, the maximum likelihood receiver is a bank of frequency-selective filters, which is very costly to implement due to the large number of filters. In this work, we aim to simplify the receiver by using an analog compressed sensing receiver with chipping sequences as correlating signals to detect the sparse signals. Our results show that using a compressed sensing receiver allows for the simplification of the analog receiver with the trade off of a slight degradation in recovery performance. For a fixed frequency separation, symbol time, and peak SNR, the performance loss remains the same for a fixed ratio of number of correlating signals to the number of frequencies. more...

Open clusters are key coeval structures that help us understand star formation, stellar evolution and trace the physical properties of our Galaxy. In the past years, the isolation of open clusters from the field has been heavily alleviated by the access to accurate large-scale stellar parallaxes and proper motions along a determined line of sight. Still, there are limitations regarding their completeness since large-scale studies rely on optical wavelengths. Here we extend the open clusters sequences towards fainter magnitudes complementing the Gaia photometric and astrometric information with near-infrared data from the VVV survey. We performed a homogeneous analysis on 37 open clusters implementing two coarse-to-fine characterization methods: extreme deconvolution Gaussian mixture models coupled with an unsupervised machine learning method on 8-dimensional parameter space. The process allowed us to separate the clusters from the field at near-infrared wavelengths. We report an increase of $\sim$47\% new member candidates on average in our sample (considering only sources with high membership probability p$\geqq$0.9). 68. The Use of Computed Tomography as a Teaching Resource for the Teaching of Structural Concrete in the Degree of Civil Engineering

- Abstract
This paper shows a teaching experience related to the use of computed tomography in the teaching of concrete for undergraduate students of the civil engineering degree. This experience reveals that computed tomography is a powerful tool to facilitate the understanding of all those aspects related to the microstructure of concrete, thus facilitating comprehension of the correlation between the microstructure and its macroscopic response. In addition, students showed a greater motivation and interest in the subject, which promotes better academic learning. A pilot test was carried out to evaluate the viability of these practices and to analyze the teaching impact of this activity. The results show that students were very interested in the use of new technologies in teaching and, more particularly, in the use of computed tomography. The students satisfactorily received the project. A greater motivation of the students in the subject was also observed, which resulted in better grades when compared with those of previous courses. The results reveal that the average grade of the students rose by around 8%, and a higher percentage of students achieved higher scores when compared to the previous five years. more...

Quantum information science is a growing field that promises to take computing into a new age of higher performance and larger scale computing as well as being capable of solving problems classical computers are incapable of solving. The outstanding issue in practical quantum computing today is scaling up the system while maintaining interconnectivity of the qubits and low error rates in qubit operations to be able to implement error correction and fault-tolerant operations. Trapped ion qubits offer long coherence times that allow error correction. However, error correction algorithms require large numbers of qubits to work properly. We can potentially create many thousands (or more) of qubits with long coherence states in a storage ring. For example, a circular radio-frequency quadrupole, which acts as a large circular ion trap and could enable larger scale quantum computing. Such a Storage Ring Quantum Computer (SRQC) would be a scalable and fault tolerant quantum information system, composed of qubits with very long coherence lifetimes. With computing demands potentially outpacing the supply of high-performance systems, quantum computing could bring innovation and scientific advances to particle physics and other DOE supported programs. Increased support of R$\&$D in large scale ion trap quantum computers would allow the timely exploration of this exciting new scalable quantum computer. The R$\&$D program could start immediately at existing facilities and would include the design and construction of a prototype SRQC. The control of levitated nano- and micro-objects in vacuum is of considerable interest, capitalizing on the scientific achievements in the fields of atomic physics, control theory and optomechanics. Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing.
